Chapter 101

“It was A Setup, All of It.”

Sophia couldn’t shake off the unexpected twist in the investigation. The phone call from the police station had summoned her to a place laden with tension and uncertainty. She made her way to the station, she looked calm on the outside, but her heart was pounding hard.

As she entered the bustling police precinct, the atmosphere was charged with an air of urgency. Detectives moved purposefully between desks, and the low hum of conversations created a backdrop to the unfolding drama.

In a small interrogation room, Cassie sat, her eyes red and swollen from tears. Sophia’s gaze met hers as she entered, a silent exchange fraught with unspoken questions, Alexander, standing nearby, wore a mask of concern, his eyes scanning the room for any signs of resolution.

Detectives greeted Sophia as she stepped in. The room seemed to shrink as they all settled into their respective roles.

“Do you want to tell Sophia what you told us?” Detective Turner asks her and Cassie nods. Sophia took a seat, facing Cassie. ” What happened, Cassie?” she asked. Cassie, her voice shaky, began recounting the events. “I didn’t kill him. It was a setup, all of it.”

The detectives exchanged glances, probing for inconsistencies in Cassie’s narrative. “Take us through it, Cassie,” Detective Turner urged, his tone measured.

Cassie took a deep breath. “I was approached by a stranger. He offered me a large sum of money to help him with something, something that would be easy, he said. All I had to do was incapacitate my boyfriend, and then go to the police.”

The room buzzed with murmurs as everyone tried to comprehend the unfolding plot. Sophia’s eyes narrowed.

“I didn’t know what I was getting into. I just needed the money, and he promised it would be harmless,” Cassie continued, desperation creeping into her voice.

Detective Turner interjected, “Why did he want you to go to the police? What was his motive?”

Cassie hesitated, her gaze flickering. “I don’t know. He didn’t tell me everything. Just that he had some issue with you, and this was a way to settle it.

Sophia leaned forward, searching for any signs of deceit. “Cassie, you’re saying someone manipulated you into framing me for this? Why?”

Cassie met Sophia’s gaze, her eyes pleading. “I really don’t know, he didn’t give me any details.”

Detective Turner scribbled notes, his mind calculating the pieces of the puzzle. “Did you see this person? Do you have any idea who they might be?”

Cassie shook her head. “No, he always wore a hood or something to hide his face. It was always in the dark. I never saw him clearly.”

The room fell into a contemplative silence as the detectives absorbed the information. Alexander, standing by Sophia, whispered, “This is unbelievable. Who would go to such lengths to frame you?”

Sophia, her mind racing, looked at Cassie. “You have to help us find this person, Cassie. If what you’re saying is true, he is dangerous, and he might come after both of us.”

Sophia wasn’t sure about that part, but she knew it was the way to get Cassie to cooperate with her. Cassie nodded genuine fear in her eyes. “I don’t want anyone else to get hurt because of me.”

The detectives decided to delve deeper into Cassie’s claims, promising to cross -reference her story with any available evidence. As they left the room, the weight of the revelation hung in the air.

Hours passed as statements were taken, alibis verified, and the intricate web of deception slowly unraveled.

Sophia and Alexander found themselves in a waiting room, their minds grappling with the surreal nature of the situation.

Detective Turner returned, a thoughtful expression on his face. ” Sophia, we’ve dug deeper into Cassie’s claims, and there’s more to this than we initially thought. Cassie was, indeed, an accomplice, but not willingly. Her boyfriend was involved in drug dealing, and Cassie was trapped in an abusive relationship with him.”

Sophia and Alexander look at each other in amazement at the outcome of Cassie’s story.

“Cassie was coerced into participating in this plan. Her boyfriend had accumulated significant debts, and the mysterious person targeted her vulnerabilities. They used her desperation against her.”

Alexander, his brow furrowed, asked, ” So, the real culprit is this criminal organization associated with the mysterious person?”

The detective nodded. “Exactly. The person Cassie communicated with used a virtual number, and she only met him once, without seeing his face. Our initial focus was on her, given her involvement, but she’s more a victim than a perpetrator.”

Sophia’s mind raced as she tried to absorb the layers of deception. “What about this mysterious person? Do we have any leads on them?”

“It’s a dead end for now. They were careful not to leave traces.”

“Can I see the messages they sent each other?” Sophia inquired.

Detective Turner handed her Cassie’s phone, and Sophia delved into the messages exchanged between Cassie and the mysterious person. Most instructions were concise, but a particular exchange caught Sophia’s attention. In it, Cassie questioned why they couldn’t meet directly, and the mysterious person replied with an enigmatic statement: “Shadows never reveal the truth.”

“There is something about Cassie’s statement…” Sophia began, her eyes focused. “There’s a detail that seems suspicious. Look here, he texted her that-something about ‘shadows never revealing the truth.””

The detective furrowed his brow, What’s suspicious about that?”

Sophia explained, “I’ve heard that phrase before. It’s a cryptic motto associated with a criminal organization, one that operates in the shadows. They’re known for being elusive, and their symbol is often a shadowy figure. If we can trace any connections to this organization, we might get closer to finding the real culprit.”

The detective nodded, “That’s a valuable lead, Sophia. We’ll dig deeper into this organization and see if there are any recent activities or connections that match the description. It might take some time, but we’ll keep you updated.”

As the detectives continued their discussion, Sophia couldn’t shake the feeling that they were on the brink of uncovering a larger conspiracy. The shadows cast by the mysterious person seemed to extend further, and she was determined to expose the truth.

Leaving the police station, Sophia’s phone buzzed with a message from Benjamin. She glanced at the screen and smiled. The message read, “Megan has been successfully lured in. She’s signed the contract with me and Michael.”

Sophia, a spark of satisfaction in her eyes, showed the message to Alexander. “It looks like our plan is working. Megan is taking the bait.”

Chapter 102

“I Know You Said No.”

“Your plan was good; I’m not surprised it worked,” Alexander complimented with a smile as they walked side by side.

Sophia acknowledged his words with a grateful nod, but her mind was already racing with the myriad tasks that awaited her now that the plan was in motion. The investigation had gained momentum, and although relief washed over her for the clearing of her name, she knew there was much work ahead.

As she mentally organized the upcoming challenges, Alexander’s voice cut through her thoughts, “I have a surprise for you at the hotel.”

Sophia turned to him, astonishment lighting up her features. “Really?” she asked, a smile playing on her lips. ” What’s the surprise?”

“You’ll have to wait to find out,” Alexander teased, adding an air of mystery to the moment.

As they strolled through the city revealed itself in fragments. The distant hum of traffic, the occasional laughter spilling out from nearby pubs, and the distant chime of Big Ben marked the passage of time. Sophia and Alexander didn’t notice when they arrived back at the hotel.

Returning to her suite at the hotel, Sophia found herself pleasantly surprised by the transformation that awaited her. The room, once a sanctuary from the outside world, now bore the imprint of Alexander’s thoughtful touch. It was as if he had woven an enchantment, turning the space into a haven of respite and solace.

The soft glow of strategically placed candles cast a warm, flickering light, creating a dance of shadows on the walls. The air carried the rich aroma of red wine, its deep, velvety scent intertwining with the delicate fragrance of the bouquet of flowers that adorned the side table. The colors in the room seemed to come alive, infused with the vibrancy of fresh blooms.

A carefully curated selection of snacks, arranged with precision, awaited her. The visual symphony of colors and textures mirrored the care that had gone into every detail. From the inviting plushness of the couch to the inviting spread on the sideboard, the suite had been transformed into a sanctuary of comfort.

Taking in the thoughtful setup, Sophia couldn’t help but smile. “This is quite a surprise, Alexander. You went all out.”

He grinned, “I thought you deserved a bit of indulgence after everything. Let’s enjoy some wine and talk about things other than investigations and conspiracies. How about sharing your experiences as a rising violinist in London? Or perhaps, enlighten me on how you became the muse of Maestro Paus.”

Sophia hesitated, glancing at the contracts that awaited her attention. ” As much as I appreciate the effort, Alexander, I have contracts to review. There’s a lot on my plate right now.”

As Alexander stood in the elegantly appointed suite, the air carried a subtle tension. The soft glow of the ambient lighting played on the rich textures of the room, casting shadows that seemed to dance with the unspoken emotions in the air. There was a moment of hesitation before Alexander responded.

“I understand, Sophia,” Alexander said, a hint of disappointment flickering in his eyes. “Work comes first.”

Sophia, aware of the delicate atmosphere, couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt. She knew the significance of Alexander’s gesture, offering companionship in a city that still held echoes of recent turmoil.

“I’m sorry, but I know if I don’t finish this, I’ll just sit and worry and not be able to relax,” she admitted to him. She sensed his disappointment, and for a moment, the weight of her responsibilities felt heavier.

“Do you want me to stay? I won’t distract you, but at least you won’t be alone.”

“Why should it be a problem to be alone?” Sophia asked, genuine confusion in her eyes.

“I’m a little worried after everything that happened. And I don’t want you to wake up next to a corpse again.”

Sophia couldn’t help but chuckle at his concern.

“Your room is a few meters from mine. I’m sure if anything happens, you’ll be the first to hear, and I have to concentrate,” she reassured him, her words a delicate balance between gratitude and independence.

“Okay, if you need anything or change your mind, I’m just a call away.”

Sophia met his gaze, seeing the sincerity that lingered beneath the surface. “Thank you, Alexander. I appreciate it.”

The door closed behind Alexander, leaving Sophia alone with her thoughts and the contracts that demanded her attention. Yet, as the silence settled in, Sophia felt that she missed Alexander’s company.

Since her arrival in London, he had been helping her and taking care of her. He was always around to keep her company and now that she was alone she was quite bored.

She shook her head to banish those thoughts and decided to focus on her work. There was so much to do anyway.

The night advanced, and Sophia delved into the intricacies of the contracts. The legal language, the clauses, and the obligations they entailed blurred into a sea of words. Occasionally, her mind drifted to the surprise that awaited her -a testament to Alexander’s effort to bring a moment of solace amid the chaos.

As Sophia immersed herself in her work, Alexander found himself pacing back and forth in his room, just a few meters away from Sophia. There was a restlessness within him, a desire to ensure Sophia’s well-being even as he respected her need for space. He debated whether to check in on her, to see if she was truly okay.

Eventually, he sent her a message: “I know you said no, but I can’t help worrying. If you change your mind, I’m just a few steps away. Take care.”

Sophia, engrossed in her tasks, glanced at her phone and read the message. A soft smile tugged at her lips. Despite the complexities of their relationship, Alexander’s concern was genuine, and she found comfort in that.

She decided to reply with a quick message. “I’m fine, thanks for checking. Don’t worry I’ll definitely eat all these snacks later.”

As the night wore on, Sophia reached the end of her contractual obligations. The weight of the tasks lifted, and a sense of accomplishment settled in. She stretched, feeling the tension in her shoulders ease.

The suite, now devoid of the anticipation that had filled it earlier, seemed both spacious and empty. Sophia contemplated the events of the evening, the surprising turns that had unfolded. Despite her initial reservations, she couldn’t deny the growing fondness she felt for Alexander.

Chapter 103

“There will be Some Serious Progress.”

The day before Sophia’s departure to the United States hung heavy with questions. The police station, a place that had become both a battleground and a sanctuary, beckoned her once again. The air was charged with anticipation as she stepped into the familiar surroundings.

Detective Turner, the stalwart figure at the center of the investigation, greeted her. “Sophia, we have some news,” he began, leading her into an interrogation room.

As they settled Detective Turner shared the unexpected twist in the case. “The real murderers have been arrested. They confessed to the crime, detailing a dispute with the victim that tragically escalated into murder. They claim that the decision to frame you was born out of panic and desperation, not orchestrated by any mastermind.”

Sophia’s eyes narrowed with skepticism and frustration. “No mastermind? What about the mysterious person we uncovered, the one pulling the strings?”

Detective Turner sighed, the weariness etched on his face. “There’s no trace of the mysterious person. The killers insist they acted alone, and our investigations haven’t uncovered any evidence to the contrary. It seems the truth of this case is shrouded in the shadows we can’t penetrate.”

Sophia, grappling with the implications, felt a sense of resignation settle over her. The intricate web she had sought to unravel seemed to slip further from her grasp. The elusive mastermind, the puppeteer orchestrating the events, remained a phantom in the shadows.

“But we had evidence, messages, connections,” Sophia protested, her voice edged with frustration Detective Turner nodded solemnly. ” We explored every lead, Sophia. The virtual trail went cold, and the killers provided no information about any mysterious person. It’s as if he vanished into thin air.”

As the weight of the revelation settled, Sophia contemplated the implications. The real murderers had been apprehended, and justice was served, but the enigma of the mysterious person lingered, casting a long shadow over her understanding of the events.

Leaving the police station that day, Sophia walked through the bustling streets of London with a sense of both closure and lingering unrest. The city, with its timeless facade, seemed to absorb the echoes of her steps. She couldn’t shake the feeling that the true orchestrator of the chaos remained at large, hidden behind layers of deception.

That evening, as she packed her belongings for the journey back to the United States, Sophia grappled with the realization that some mysteries defy unraveling. In the quiet of her hotel room, Sophia reflected on the tumultuous chapters that had unfolded in London.

Whoever had framed her had gotten away, and that annoyed her, but deep down Sophia knew it was Megan. She was so sure even without proof that at that moment she vowed to seek revenge for everything Megan had done to her.

Sophia’s hands moved swiftly, zipping up her suitcase with a sense of finality. The click of the latch seemed to echo the closing of a chapter. Just as she completed the task, her phone buzzed with a familiar notification.

Alexander’s message illuminated the screen.

“I’m at the door, and I hope you’re ready for America.”

A smile played on Sophia’s lips, and she made her way to the door to welcome him. As it swung open, she was met with the sight of Alexander.

“Isn’t it a little early?” she teased, replacing a conventional greeting with a playful remark. “Our flight isn’t until the morning.”

“I decided that we would travel on my private jet. Why wait when we can be just the two of us drinking champagne, and you owe me a conversation? You have no work to do now.”

Sophia raised an eyebrow, a mixture of surprise and amusement coloring her expression. The notion of a private jet was unexpected, yet she couldn’t deny that such gestures had become synonymous with Alexander’s approach.

“You arranged a private jet?” she inquired, the curiosity evident in her tone.

“Of course. I’m dying to know about your life as a musician, and this is a good opportunity for you to tell me.”

Sophia, feigning consideration for a moment, couldn’t help but chuckle at the sincerity of Alexander’s proposition.

“Okay, that seems fair to me. You arrange a plane for me, and I’ll regale you with tales of my music studies.” The agreement hung in the air, punctuated by Alexander’s laughter.

The hum of the private jet’s engines created a backdrop of subdued noise as Alexander and Sophia sat in plush seats, flying across the Atlantic toward the United States. The luxurious interior of the plane reflected the opulence that accompanied Alexander’s status.

Sophia gazed out of the window, the expanse of clouds masking the depths of the ocean below. The journey back to the U.S. provided a moment of respite, a chance for reflection amidst the whirlwind of events that had unfolded in London.

“I appreciate you arranging this,” Sophia said, breaking the silence. “It’s a relief to be heading home.”

Alexander nodded, his gaze momentarily drifting to the horizon. ” Home has a way of grounding us. But, Sophia, I need to know-what’s next for you?”

Sophia leaned back, her eyes fixed on Alexander. “We can’t let this go, Alexander. Even though we couldn’t trace the manipulator behind the case, there’s one clue we’ve overlooked-the control of public opinion and the media. Those attackers outside the hotel, I suspect they were instructed by someone behind the scenes.”

Alexander furrowed his brow, absorbing the weight of her words. ” You think a puppet master is pulling the strings, manipulating the narrative?

Sophia nodded. “It makes sense. The public perception of the case was carefully crafted. It’s not just about framing me; it’s about controlling the entire story. We need to find out who’s orchestrating this and why.”

Alexander considered her words. “I have connections. I can dig into news outlets, and investigate if someone is secretly manipulating the narrative.”

Sophia smiled at him with gratitude. ” Thank you. All the time in London you helped me and even though I thought I didn’t need help, I’m glad you were here.”

“I made you a promise. I will keep it to the end.” Alexander retorted with a smile. As the plane soared through the skies, Alexander reached for his phone, making discreet calls to initiate the investigation.

Inside the cabin, the soft clinking of champagne glasses resonated as Alexander and Sophia toasted to moments of reprieve. The air was filled with the aroma of carefully curated meals, served in elegant dishes that spoke of sophistication and attention to detail.

Despite the luxurious setting, the interactions between Alexander and Sophia were marked by a sense of restraint. There were lingering glances and subtle touches, but no overt advances. The unspoken understanding between them added layers of complexity to the shared space.

As the plane taxied to a stop, the reality of their imminent parting loomed. Sophia couldn’t help but feel a twinge of reluctance. The connection that had evolved during their time together on the plane carried a weight that transcended mere companionship.

As they prepared to disembark, the atmosphere shifted. Alexander, ever the epitome of grace, stood and offered his hand to Sophia. The cabin door opened, revealing the bustling activity of the airport beyond.

They stepped onto the solid ground, the transition from the enclosed space of the plane to the expansive terminal mirroring the shift in dynamics. The private moments they had shared seemed suspended in time, existing in a realm separate from the reality unfolding around them.

Alexander, a pillar of strength, turned to Sophia. The farewell carried a mix of promise and uncertainty. “Until we meet again,” he said, his voice carrying a note of assurance. He drew her into a gentle embrace, and his lips pressed against her forehead in a tender kiss. ” And I promise the next time we see each other there will be some serious progress.”

Their paths diverged as they navigated the bustling terminal, each step echoing the distance that would momentarily separate them. Sophia glanced back, meeting Alexander’s gaze one last time before disappearing into the crowd.

As Alexander watched her blend into the throng of travelers, a sense of purpose burned in his eyes. The promise he had made was twofold- progress in the investigation and, perhaps, a deeper exploration of the connection that had emerged between them.

Chapter 104

“Failure is not An Option.”

The boardroom at Enlighten Press was an opulent space with a long mahogany table, surrounded by high-backed leather chairs, which served as the stage for an intense exchange. Megan Sterling, the poised heiress apparent, found herself under the scrutinizing gaze of the board members.

They were full of skepticism and concern, questioning her recent decision to sign the bet-on agreement with Michael Bayell, a move that had sent ripples of doubt through the company and its investors.

Rachel Townsend, a seasoned board member with piercing eyes, wasted no time cutting to the heart of the matter. “Megan, we need assurances. What guarantees do we have that you’ll meet the performance targets outlined in the agreement?”

Seated at the head of the table, Megan maintained a calm exterior. “I have a strategic plan in place. Enlighten Press is my priority, and I’m fully committed to its success.”

Jonathan Turner, a voice of reason with a hint of skepticism, pressed on, ” Recent tabloid reports suggest financial instability. How do you address those concerns, Megan?”

Megan’s jaw tensed as she countered, ” Those reports are baseless. The company is financially sound, and we have upcoming projects that will secure our growth.”

Isabel Ramirez chimed in, “Forgive us if we find it hard to believe, Megan. The media is questioning not just the company’s stability but your ability to lead.”

Megan cleared her throat and tried again to deflate the situation. “As I already said I am dedicated to the success of Enlighten Press.”

Gregory Mitchell, an unmoved skeptic, voiced the concern on everyone’s mind. “Commitment alone won’t suffice. We need tangible results. What happens if you fail?”

The atmosphere grew even more charged with tension as Leland Sterling, Megan’s father, started to talk.

“Gentlemen,” Leland began, his voice cutting through the silence like a sharp blade. “We’re here to address the recent challenges facing Enlighten Press. It has come to my attention that doubts have been cast upon the company’s future, and it’s time we set things straight.”

The intensity of Leland’s gaze swept across the room, each board member feeling the weight of his scrutiny. Megan, despite being his daughter, couldn’t escape the sternness in his eyes.

“I have a plan,” Leland continued, his tone unwavering. “A plan that will determine the future of Enlighten Press and I hope will provide you with that much-needed reassurance. Megan, come to me.”

Megan rose from her seat, her eyes meeting her father’s. Leland handed her a document – a binding agreement that would define the course of Enlighten Press in the coming months.

“You will sign this commitment,” Leland stated, his words resonating through the room. “If, within six months, the specified performance metrics are not met, the shares of Enlighten Press will be subject to merger by Michael Bayell and his associates. Furthermore, Megan will resign, relinquishing control of the company.”

The gravity of the pronouncement hung in the air, an unspoken understanding that failure was not an option. The board members exchanged glances, recognizing the high stakes of the ultimatum laid before Megan.

Megan, her hand trembling slightly, took the pen and affixed her signature to the document. The ink dried, sealing her fate and that of Enlighten Press.

“You have six months,” Leland declared, his gaze unwavering. “Make no mistake, failure is not an option. The legacy of the Sterling name rests on your shoulders, Megan. Do what needs to be done.”

As the weighty meeting concluded, Megan felt the weight of her father’s expectations bearing down on her. The board members dispersed, leaving Megan alone in the now somber boardroom.

Leland Sterling, the only one left there, stood at the center of the boardroom, the epitome of control. His eyes, sharp and discerning, fixed on Megan with an intensity that bespoke a manipulative prowess honed over years of corporate intrigue.

“You’ve made a promise, Megan,” Leland spoke the words carrying a weight that transcended the mere exchange of a familial conversation. ” Failure is not an option. Do whatever it takes to secure Enlighten Press’s success.”

Megan’s gaze met her father’s, a tumult of conflicting emotions roiling beneath the surface. The commitment she had made during the board meeting felt like shackles, constraining her to a path fraught with ethical dilemmas and uncharted territory.

“Father,” she began, her voice betraying a hint of vulnerability, “I understand the gravity of the situation, but the board’s doubts and the pressure you’re putting on me-”

Leland cut her off with a dismissive wave of his hand. “Doubt is the currency of the weak, Megan. You are a. Sterling, and Stirlings don’t succumb to doubts. You made a commitment, and you will fulfill it. We cannot afford any missteps, not when our position in Horizon Media Holdings is at stake.”

Megan’s eyes flashed with resignation. The weight of her family’s legacy bore down on her shoulders, a legacy woven with power, privilege, and unyielding expectations.

“I have plans in motion, Father,” she asserted, attempting to assert some semblance of control. “But this isn’t just about performance; it’s about the image, the narrative we craft. The media is questioning us, and I need time to manage public perception.”

Leland Sterling paced the room with measured steps. “Public perception is a malleable thing, Megan. It bends to the will of those who understand how to shape it. You have the resources, the connections. Use them wisely.”

Megan spoke with a touch of defiance.” I will do anything that is in my power.”

Leland’s gaze turned piercing, a subtle threat lingering in the air. “You have to do even more, Megan. Enlighten Press is not just your venture; it’s a legacy. And legacies require sacrifices.”

The silence that followed hung thick in the room, a testament to the unspoken tensions and the battles waged within Megan’s conscience. As her father exited the boardroom, leaving her to grapple with the intricate web of expectations and alliances, Megan knew that the path ahead was fraught with peril.

Megan left alone in the opulent solitude of her office, contemplated the intricate web of possibilities that lay ahead. The commitment she had just made in the boardroom weighed heavily on her, and a solution needed to be crafted from the fragments of her tumultuous world.

The thought of seeking help from Alexander crossed her mind. His company, with its substantial advertising needs, could potentially be the lifeline Enlighten Press needed to meet the elusive performance metrics.

Megan envisioned a strategic collaboration that, if executed seamlessly, could elevate Enlighten Press and fulfill the terms of her ominous commitment.

As Megan pondered the intricacies of this potential alliance, a flicker of doubt crept into her mind. The failed scheme to frame Sophia, albeit unsuccessful, might have cast a shadow on Alexander’s perception of her. Megan wondered if the failed manipulation had affected Alexander’s opinion of Sophia, even in the slightest.

Her contemplation, however, was abruptly interrupted when she decided to check the latest news. To her surprise, an article in the gossip section caught her eye. The headline, accompanied by a candid photo, narrated the tale of Sophia and Alexander’s return to the US on his private plane. Speculation about their relationship fueled the gossip columns, with whispers of a possible reconciliation echoing through the celebrity grapevine.

As Megan caught a glimpse of Sophia and Alexander standing together, a pang of unexpected jealousy hit her like a ton of bricks.

“Seriously? Boarding his private plane?

That’s new,” she muttered to herself, feeling a surge of envy towards Sophia. Even during the most passionate phases of their past relationship, Alexander had never extended the privilege of boarding his private plane to Megan. The revelation that Sophia, who once stood as Megan’s rival, now occupied a space Megan had never entered, intensified the twinge of envy.

But despite the green-eyed monster rearing its head, Megan couldn’t shake the belief that Alexander still had feelings for her. “Maybe it’s not too late,” she mused, deciding to give him a call.

Determined to reconnect and reignite what they once had, Megan imagined a meeting where they could sort through their tangled history and maybe even fan the flames of their past romance.

“Here goes nothing,” she said, tapping away on her phone with a mix of nerves and excitement.

Chapter 105

“I am Asking Alexander, not You.”

Amidst the elegant ambiance of Sophia’s apartment, the air carried a sense of familiarity and warmth as Sophia and Evelyn settled in for a candid conversation. Sophia, true to her promise, presented. Evelyn with the limited edition Burberry handbag.

“I can’t believe you actually bought me a bag. I was joking,” says Evelyn standing in front of the mirror posing.

“I know, but I wanted to make you happy,” Sophia replies. “Speaking of which you have a lot to tell me about London, the media has exploded,” says Evelyn. She sits back down next to Sophia and looks at her expectantly.

Sophia immediately delved into the narrative of her recent experiences, recounting the twists and turns that had defined her journey. Evelyn, an attentive listener, absorbed each detail, her eyes reflecting a blend of concern and empathy.

As Sophia unfolded the chapters of her life, Evelyn found herself drawn into the complexities of Sophia’s world-a world that had been entangled in a web of mystery, manipulation, and unexpected murder.

With the tale of Sophia’s exploits hanging in the air, the conversation naturally segued into Evelyn’s own life. Sophia, with genuine curiosity, inquired about Evelyn’s recent endeavors, eager to reciprocate the openness she had shared.

Evelyn, her demeanor shifting, began to unravel a different narrative-a story tinged with intrigue and a touch of uncertainty. She confessed to being entangled in a peculiar relationship in the past month.

“He’s interesting, Sophia, and we do everything that couples do,” Evelyn admitted her expression a mixture of fascination and bewilderment. “But when it comes to defining our relationship or introducing me to his. friends and family, he remains elusive.”

Sophia, her intuition finely tuned, absorbed Evelyn’s words. A thoughtful silence settled between them, allowing the weight of Evelyn’s confession to linger in the air.

“I think, Evelyn,” Sophia began, her voice gentle yet firm, “it might be worth considering distancing yourself from this relationship. You deserve clarity and openness, not a situation that leaves you in perpetual uncertainty.”

Evelyn, caught in the intersection of emotions, nodded in contemplation. The advice, though pragmatic, stirred a complex array of feelings within her.

As the evening unfolded, Sophia couldn’t shake the curiosity surrounding the enigmatic figure in Evelyn’s life. When Evelyn disclosed the person’s name – Kyle Vennillia-a. glint of recognition flashed in Sophia’s eyes. The name echoed familiarity, and Sophia’s mind raced to connect the dots.

“Kyle Vennillia, you said?” Sophia mused, a thoughtful expression etched on her face. “He’s a journalist, isn’t he?

Evelyn, her gaze searching Sophia’s face, couldn’t help but be drawn into the subtle mystery that seemed to dance in Sophia’s eyes.

“How did you know about Kyle?” Evelyn asked. Sophia, a half-smile playing on her lips, replied, “Let’s just say our paths may have crossed, albeit indirectly.”

The revelation sparked a playful exchange of banter between the two friends, their laughter filling the room. The ambiance, once charged with the weight of shared confessions, now carried a lighthearted energy as they navigated the intricacies of love and relationships.

“Speaking of connections,” Sophia began, her eyes sparkling with mischief, “have you considered confronting Kyle about the ambiguity in your relationship? It might be time to bring those unspoken feelings into the light.”

Evelyn caught between amusement and contemplation, sighed. “Sophia, you always have a way of cutting through the complications. Confrontation is not exactly my strong suit, but maybe you’re right.”

Sophia leaned in, her expression conspiratorial. “Think of it as a performance review for your relationship. You deserve to know where you stand and what role Kyle sees you playing in his life.”

Evelyn chuckled, appreciating the metaphor. “A performance review, huh? Maybe I should prepare a PowerPoint presentation.”

Sophia joined in the laughter, the camaraderie between them deepening. As the evening unfolded, the conversation seamlessly flowed between shared anecdotes, friendly advice, and the subtle dance of emotions that colored their discussions.

Sophia’s phone buzzed, and she glanced at the screen to see a message from Alexander. The words sparked a flicker of curiosity and concern. “I have something important to tell you. Can we meet at Bistro 45?”

Evelyn noticed the change in Sophia’s expression. “Is everything okay?” she inquired, her eyes reflecting genuine concern.

Sophia hesitated for a moment before sharing, “Alexander wants to meet me at Bistro 45. He says he has something important to tell me.”

Evelyn raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. “Bistro 45? That sounds serious. Do you think it’s about the ongoing investigation or something personal?”

Sophia shrugged. “I’m not sure. But it feels important. I’ll go and find out.”

Evelyn nodded understandingly. “Of course. You should go. I’ll wait for you at your apartment. Let me know how it goes.”

With that, Sophia excused herself, leaving her apartment building and stepping into the crisp night. She hailed a cab, and as the city lights blurred through the window, her thoughts danced between anticipation and uncertainty.

As Sophia arrived, she saw Megan and Alexander leaving the restaurant. Megan’s arm intertwined with Alexander’s, and a fleeting sense of discomfort brushed Sophia. Alexander, seemingly swaying slightly, appeared under the influence of alcohol.

Sophia, her concern deepening, approached them, her eyes searching Alexander’s face for any signs of distress. Megan, ever the orchestrator of drama, acknowledged Sophia with a smirk, her possessive grip on Alexander not escaping Sophia’s notice.

“Alexander, are you alright?” Sophia inquired, her voice laced with genuine worry.

Alexander, his words slightly slurred, assured her, “I’m fine, Sophia. Just had a bit too much to drink. Megan here is taking me home.”

“Are you sure? You texted me. You wanted to talk.” Sophia said gently.

“He is fine, Sophia.” Megan chimed in.

“I am asking Alexander, not you,” Sophia replied harshly.

“I am fine. Trust me.” Alexander said with a drunk smile. Megan added, “Yes, he insisted on another round, and things got a bit out of hand. But don’t worry, I’ve got him covered.”

Sophia, torn between concern and the desire to respect Alexander’s apparent choice, hesitated. The situation unfolded like a scene from a play she hadn’t rehearsed for. The air thickened with unspoken tension as Alexander, leaning on Megan for support, seemed determined to downplay the situation.

As they walked away, Megan’s possessive hold on Alexander did not go unnoticed by Sophia. She bit back the myriad of questions swirling in her mind, choosing, for the moment, to let the scene unfold without interference.

Chapter 106

“One Drink it is. ”

In the sleek confines of Megan’s modern office, the air was charged with anticipation as Alexander considered Megan’s business proposition. Megan, dressed in a sophisticated ensemble that exuded authority, presented her case with determination.

“Alexander, I’ve been thinking about our past, and I believe there’s an opportunity for us to collaborate professionally,” Megan began, her eyes locking onto Alexander’s with a calculated intensity. “I’ve been working hard to elevate Enlighten Press, and I could use your expertise to take it to the next level.”

Alexander listened attentively. “Go on.”

Megan outlined her vision for the collaboration, detailing how Alexander’s company could complement the goals of Enlighten Press. She spoke of market trends, potential growth, and the synergy their partnership could create. It was a well- prepared pitch that aimed to appeal not just to business sense but to the shared history between them.

“I know our personal history has been complicated, but I believe in separating the past from our professional potential,” Megan added, her expression earnest. “I wouldn’t be asking if I didn’t think this could benefit both of us.”

“I appreciate the offer, Megan, but I’m not sure if our companies align in terms of values and goals,” Alexander remarked, his voice carrying a note of reservation.

Megan’s expression wavered, and she played her cards strategically, adopting a more vulnerable tone. “Alexander, I’ve put so much effort into making Enlighten Press a success. My father expects a lot from me, and I want to prove to him that I can be a successful businesswoman on my own. If you don’t help me, all my efforts might be in vain.”

Her plea held a sincerity that resonated, and Alexander, despite his reservations, felt a twinge of empathy. Megan continued, her gaze unwavering, “I know we’ve had our differences, but I believe in the potential of our collaboration. It’s not just about business; it’s about proving something to myself and gaining my father’s approval.”

Alexander, his expression softening, considered Megan’s words. “Megan, business aside, our personal history does carry some weight. I’ll let the advertising department evaluate the potential for cooperation. No promises, but we’ll see.”

Megan’s eyes lit up with relief and gratitude. “Thank you, Alexander. I appreciate you considering this.”

As the discussion unfolded, the tension in the room began to dissipate. Megan, seizing the opportunity, suggested, Why don’t we celebrate this potential collaboration? A drink, maybe?”

Alexander, initially hesitant, eventually acquiesced. “Fine, but just one drink,” he agreed.

Megan’s smile returned, a blend of triumph and charm. “One drink it is. I know a great place nearby.”

The transition from Megan’s office to Bistro 45 marked a shift in atmosphere, as Alexander and Megan stepped into the refined world of the upscale restaurant. The subdued elegance of the establishment enveloped them, creating an intimate setting for their continued conversation.

As they settled into their chosen corner table, the attentive staff approached, ready to cater to their needs. The clinking of glasses and the distant melody of a piano being skillfully played added to the sophisticated symphony that permeated the air.

Megan leaned back in her chair. She swirled the wine in her glass, her gaze locked onto Alexander, who exuded a polite demeanor concealing an underlying wariness.

“Alexander, it’s been a while since we’ve had a chance to catch up. How have you been?” Megan inquired, her voice carrying a tone of casual interest.

Taking a sip of his drink, Alexander responded with a nod. “Busy as usual, Megan. What about you?”

A smirk played on Megan’s lips as she leaned in, revealing a hint of the calculated confidence she wielded in the corporate world.

“Oh, you know, navigating the corporate world, trying to make a name for myself. It’s not easy when people expect you to be just a rich man’s daughter,” she confessed, her eyes locked onto Alexander’s.

Understanding the challenges she faced, Alexander nodded in acknowledgment. “I understand the challenges. Your father’s reputation can cast a long shadow.”

Seizing the moment, Megan shifted the conversation toward a potential collaboration, the core of her hidden agenda.

“That’s precisely why I wanted to talk to you, Alexander. The collaboration that I suggested earlier is beneficial for both of us.”

Alexander, maintaining his composed expression, raised an eyebrow, a silent signal for Megan to elaborate.

“Exposure, Alexander. Our audience, our reach-it could benefit your company in ways you haven’t imagined, “Megan explained, her eyes reflecting determination.

Yet, Alexander, a seasoned businessman, wasn’t swayed easily. He leaned back, his expression conveying a hint of skepticism.

“And what about the recent tabloid reports about financial troubles at Enlighten Press?” he probed, his gaze unwavering. Megan’s practiced smile tightened briefly, but she quickly regained her composure.

“Just baseless rumors. You know how the media can be,” she dismissed, deflecting the inquiry. Alexander, undeterred, continued to navigate the conversation with caution.

“Our personal history shouldn’t influence business decisions. I’ll consider the collaboration, but that’s all I can promise,” he declared, his words revealing a resolve to keep professional boundaries intact.

As the evening unfolded in the elegant surroundings of Bistro 45, Megan’s ulterior motives lingered beneath the surface, waiting for the opportune moment to reveal themselves.

She didn’t wait long and the opportunity presented itself. Alexander excused himself from the table, leaving Megan alone with their glasses of wine.

Unbeknownst to him, Megan seized the opportunity to carry out her covert plan. With a practiced sleight of hand, she discreetly added a substance to Alexander’s drink, a move executed with the precision of someone well- versed in manipulation.

Once the deed was done, Megan nonchalantly resumed her seat, her gaze betraying no hint of the calculated act she had just committed. The plan was set in motion, and now, all she had to do was wait.

Meanwhile, Alexander, unaware of the impending twist, returned to the table, resuming the conversation with Megan. Little did he know that the course of the evening was about to take a perilous turn.

As the effects of the substance took hold, Alexander began to feel an unsettling shift in his senses. The room seemed to sway, and his once steady composure started to waver. A subtle realization crept in-something was undeniably wrong.

In a bid to maintain appearances, Alexander struggled to hide the distress that now etched his features. Yet, Megan, the architect of this unsettling turn of events, continued to play her part impeccably, her concern for Alexander feigned with a practiced ease.

Sensing his vulnerability, Megan rose from her seat, offering Alexander her support. As they made their way towards the exit, her arm wrapped around him in the guise of assistance, Sophia observed the scene with concern for Alexander.

Megan guided Alexander away, and Sophia’s gaze lingered on the departing figures. Something about the scene seemed off, but the precise nature eluded her grasp.

In the midst of the unfolding drama, a plan crystallized in Alexander’s mind. Rather than revealing the distressing situation to Sophia, he chose a different path-one that aligned with a strategy yet to be unveiled.

The intricacies of his plan remained shrouded in secrecy, a decision made with the conviction that the unfolding events were part of a larger, calculated scheme. Alexander now knew how to play his cards right.

Chapter 107

“Last Night was Fun, Right?”

Sophia tiptoed into her apartment, careful not to disturb Evelyn, who was peacefully asleep. The dim light in the living room revealed a serene scene, and Sophia, still mulling over the perplexing events of the evening, decided not to wake her friend. Instead, she headed to the kitchen, feeling the need to unwind.

Pouring herself a generous glass of wine, Sophia tried to make sense of the evening’s chaos. The memory of Alexander leaving, seemingly inebriated, with Megan was still fresh in her mind. She couldn’t shake off the feeling that something was amiss.

Just as she settled into her thoughts, her phone buzzed, and Alexander’s name flashed on the screen. Intrigued and slightly anxious, she opened the message that read, “Sorry, I’ll explain later.”

The first attempt led to disappointment -a ringing phone with no response. Anxiety crept in, fueled by her overactive imagination conjuring all sorts of scenarios. Was he in trouble?

Sophia frowned at her phone. “Explain what?” she muttered to herself. The evening had taken an unexpected turn, and she couldn’t fathom what could be behind Alexander’s mysterious message. He had asked for a conversation, and then he disappeared into the night with Megan.

Unable to resist the urge to seek answers, Sophia decided to call him. She pressed the dial button, her mind racing with questions.

The first attempt led to disappointment -a ringing phone with no response. Anxiety crept in, fueled by her overactive imagination conjuring all sorts of scenarios. Was he in trouble?

Unable to contain her worry, Sophia decided to give it another shot after five agonizing minutes. This time, the call connected, and a voice on the other end finally broke the silence. But it wasn’t Alexander. It was Megan, and the sound of rushing water in the background suggested she was in the middle of a shower.

Sophia, confused and slightly annoyed, blurted out, “Hey, where’s Alexander? What’s going on?”

Megan, with an air of arrogance that matched her tone, responded nonchalantly, “Oh, he’s just taking a shower. What’s up?”

Sophia, baffled by the unexpected turn of events, raised an eyebrow. “He just texted me…Nevermind.”

Sophia decided that she wasn’t concerned with Megan right now.

“Okay, well, if you don’t have anything to say, I’ll hang up,” Megan retorts and laughs. Sophia stared at her phone for a moment after ending the call with Megan. She couldn’t help but feel frustrated and confused.

“Seriously, what’s going on?” she muttered to herself. It wasn’t like her to be so invested in someone else’s drama, but Alexander’s mysterious behavior had stirred something in her.

After a deep sigh, Sophia decided to shake off her concerns. “I’ve got better things to do than worrying about him,” she said to herself, trying to adopt a nonchalant attitude. She needed to prioritize her own peace of mind, and if Alexander wanted to play the enigma card, then so be it.

With newfound determination, Sophia headed to the bathroom, turning on the shower to wash away the lingering tension. The warm water cascaded over her, providing a brief respite from the chaotic thoughts swirling in her mind. As the water droplets danced on her skin, she couldn’t help but replay the events of the evening.

“I should’ve seen this coming,” she muttered, her frustration mounting again. But deep down, she knew that Alexander’s unpredictability wasn’t something she could have anticipated. She shook her head, trying to clear away the mental fog.

After the shower, Sophia wrapped herself in a cozy towel and padded to her bedroom. She glanced at the clock -late, as usual. Despite the exhaustion from the day’s events, sleep proved elusive. Tossing and turning in bed, she found herself staring at the ceiling, her mind still buzzing with questions.

“Why do I even care so much?” Sophia whispered to the quiet room. It wasn’t just about Alexander; it was about the unsettling feeling of not knowing. She hated being in the dark, especially when it came to people she considered close.

The night stretched on, with the rhythmic ticking of the clock as her only companion. Sleep finally claimed her, but it was a restless slumber. Dreams and fragments of thoughts about Alexander and the events of the evening intertwined, creating a tangled web of confusion.

*

The morning sun sliced through the curtains, casting a warm glow on Alexander’s bedroom. As he gradually woke up, the fog of sleep lifted, and his eyes widened with realization. He wasn’t alone in bed. Panic set in when he saw Megan lying next to him, both of them naked.

His face went from dazed to downright horrified. “Oh, no, no, no,” Alexander muttered to himself, running his hands through his hair as if trying to erase the previous night’s events.

Megan, seemingly unfazed by the situation, stirred and reached out to him with a sly grin. “Morning, handsome,” she purred, attempting to be all affectionate.

But Alexander recoiled, his expression turning from horror to stern in an instant. “No, no, no,” he repeated, pushing her away gently but firmly. ” This is not happening.”

Megan, undeterred, sat up and attempted to play it cool. “Come on, Alex, don’t be like that. Last night was fun, right?”

Alexander shot her a withering look. ” Fun? Megan, this isn’t a game. We had an agreement, and this wasn’t part of it.

In a cold tone, he continued, “I listened to your cooperation spiel, drank with you, and now I wake up like this? Seriously?”

Megan, realizing the gravity of the situation, dropped the playful act. ” Look, Alexander, I had to do what I had to do. You know how important this cooperation is. I had to make sure you’re committed.”

Alexander’s expression turned from stern to incredulous. “Committed? By getting me drunk and taking advantage? That’s your idea of commitment?”

Megan sighed, her desperation creeping into her voice. “I had to use every possible means, Alex. This is bigger than us. I needed to be sure you were on board.”

Alexander shook his head, frustration and disappointment written all over his face. “This is not how you gain someone’s trust, Megan. Now, leave.”

Megan reluctantly climbed out of bed. As she gathered her clothes, the room was thick with tension. The events of the night had left an indelible mark on the dynamics between Alexander and Megan.

“Oh come on Alexander it’s not the end of the world,” Megan says as she is getting ready.

She tried to place a kiss on Alexander’s cheek but he dodged her. That only made her laugh.

Chapter 108

“It’s a Small Price to Pay.”

The room crackled with tension as Alexander zipped up his jeans, ignoring Megan’s pleas to stay. He wasn’t about to be manipulated, especially after waking up in a compromising situation that reeked of Megan’s scheming.

Megan, undeterred, shot him a warning. “Alex, if you walk out that door, the tabloids will have a field day. Pictures of you wasted last night, me dragging you back here – the whole scandal. You won’t be able to show your face without becoming the headline sensation of the century.”

Alexander, unimpressed, shot back with a smirk. “You think that’s gonna work on me? Nice try, Megan.”

But Megan wasn’t done. She played her trump card, dark eyes narrowing with determination. “Oh, it gets better. Those pictures will be nothing compared to what they’ll have of us coming and going from this apartment. You leave, and our secret rendezvous becomes public knowledge. Think about what Sophia will say.”

Alexander’s eyes narrowed, the mention of Sophia injecting a new dose of tension into the room. Megan continued, “You leave, and Sophia won’t just lose trust in you; she’ll despise you even more. But I can make it all go away.”

She leaned in a dangerous glint in her eye. “All you have to do is publicly announce our engagement. It’s a small price to pay, considering the alternative.”

Alexander scoffed, crossing his arms. ” Engagement? You’re out of your mind, Megan. I’m not playing your games.”

But Megan, confident in her manipulation tactics, didn’t back down. “Think about it, Alex. This could be a win-win. We announce our engagement, take control of Horizon Media Holdings together, and ride the wave of publicity. It’s a lucrative deal, don’t you see?”

Alexander, his patience wearing thin, shot back, “You really think I’d sell out like that? Drag Sophia into this mess just to satisfy your ambitions? Not a chance, Megan.”

Megan’s eyes flashed with frustration and determination. “You’re making a mistake, Alex. A big one. You’ll regret it when the headlines hit.”

The air in the room hung heavy as Alexander absorbed Megan’s audacious proposal. He didn’t utter a word, but the silent intensity radiating from him spoke volumes. His jaw clenched, and his piercing gaze bore into Megan, revealing a storm of emotions beneath the surface.

With that, Alexander brushed past her, determined to face whatever storm awaited him outside the apartment. The stakes were high.

Alexander reached for his phone, his fingers tapping with a restrained fury. He made a call, his voice low and commanding, “Yeah, it’s me. Temporarily keep Megan under control. “The terseness of his words hinted at the brewing tempest within him.

Alexander navigated the familiar streets, his mind racing with thoughts of Sophia. His usually calm demeanor was now a tempest of emotions. The thought of Megan’s attempt to manipulate him fueled the fire within, and he was determined to set things straight with Sophia.

The journey to Sophia’s place was a tumultuous one. Every passing moment seemed to stretch as Alexander grappled with the looming confrontation. As he reached Sophia’s doorstep, he took a deep breath, mentally preparing for the storm he was about to face. He knocked on the door, uncertain of what awaited him on the other side.

*

The morning Sophia groggily opened her eyes, realizing that the restless night had left its mark. As she prepared for the day, a lingering unease persisted, a reminder that whatever was going on with Alexander had seeped into her thoughts and refused to let go.

As she rubbed her eyes and tried to shake off the fog of sleep, Sophia’s mind was already a battlefield of conflicting emotions. The events of the previous night replayed like a broken record, and the turmoil within her was reaching unprecedented levels.

“I mean, seriously, Sophia, get a grip,” she muttered to herself. She stared at the ceiling, attempting to make sense of the tangled mess in her mind.

“How silly was I?” she mused aloud, a sardonic smile playing on her lips. ” Alexander is just a friend, right? It’s none of my business who he sleeps with. Even if that someone is Megan.”

Sophia winced at the thought. The reality of Alexander’s actions hit her like a punch to the gut. “Knowing they’re practically enemies, he still drinks with her and goes on a date? Seriously?” She shook her head, trying to dislodge the disbelief that clung to her.

The internal monologue continued as Sophia grappled with her emotions. “I should’ve seen this coming. But, no, I had to go and develop some weird fondness for him. Great, just great.”

She sighed, the weight of her emotions pressing down on her. “And now what? This fondness, or whatever it was, is plummeting to freezing point. What a fantastic way to start the day.”

Despite the morning sun attempting to coax a sense of normalcy, Sophia couldn’t escape the shadows of the night before. As she reluctantly got out of bed, the uncertainty of her feelings lingered like an unwelcome companion, casting a pall over the day ahead.

The morning unfolded with Sophia navigating the familiar motions of getting ready for the day. As she tiptoed around the apartment, trying not to wake the still-sleeping Evelyn. She decided to take refuge in the routine of making breakfast, the rhythmic clatter of pots and pans offering a brief distraction from the chaos within.

The aroma of sizzling eggs and brewing coffee filled the air as Sophia moved around the kitchen, mechanically preparing her morning meal.

Just as she settled into the routine, a knock echoed through the apartment. Sophia furrowed her brow, not expecting any visitors at this early hour. With a quick glance at the still- closed bedroom door, she headed to answer it.

Upon swinging the door open, Sophia’s eyes widened as she found Alexander standing on the doorstep. His presence caught her off guard, and for a moment, the air between them seemed charged with the residual tension from the night before.

“Hey,” Alexander greeted, his voice carrying a hint of uncertainty. Sophia blinked, momentarily speechless. “Uh, hey,” she replied, surprise and wariness in her tone. The unspoken questions lingered in the air, and she wondered what had brought him to her doorstep after the events of the previous night.

Alexander shifted uncomfortably, running a hand through his disheveled hair. “Can we talk?” he asked, his eyes searching hers for some sign of understanding.

Sophia hesitated, her guard still up. Talk? About what, exactly?”

Chapter 109

“I won’t Bother You Anymore.”

The tension in the air crackled as Sophia crossed her arms, leaning against the doorframe. Alexander stood awkwardly on the other side of the threshold, uncertainty etched across his face. The weight of the unspoken words hung heavily between them.

“Look, Sophia, I need you to understand,” Alexander began.

Sophia raised an eyebrow, feigning indifference. “Understand what? That you and Megan were just having a friendly drink and a midnight chat?” Her tone was laced with skepticism, a defense mechanism to mask the turmoil within.

Alexander sighed, the creaking of the door echoing the tension in the room, and he ran a hand through his hair. ” Sophia, nothing happened between us. I got drunk, and Megan helped me back here. That’s it.”

Sophia’s eyes narrowed, her walls still firmly in place. “Oh, how heartwarming. You and Megan, the best of buddies. But, really, Alexander, you expect me to believe nothing happened? You two disappearing together, and then I find out you spent the night?”

Alexander’s frustration simmered beneath the surface. He felt the need to convey more than just words; he needed Sophia to see the truth in his eyes. “It’s not like that. You know we have history, and it’s complicated. But last night… it was just a mess.”

Sophia, refusing to let her guard down, shrugged nonchalantly. “Complicated history, sure. But hey, it’s none of my business who you sleep with. Friends can do that, right?”

As he searched Sophia’s eyes for a hint of understanding, Alexander’s internal thoughts raced. She has to believe me. I can’t lose her over something that didn’t happen. How did it come to this?

“Sophia, it’s not about sleeping with her. I need you to believe me, nothing like that happened.”

Sophia’s facade wavered for a moment, but she controlled herself. “Why are you here explaining yourself to me? You are a grown up man Alexander. Do as you please.” She chuckled, a bitter edge to her laughter.

“So, you don’t care? You don’t want to know what happened yesterday?” Alexander asked her.

“No.”

Despite the emotional storm brewing, Sophia’s indifference cast a shadow over the room, making the situation even more tense.

Alexander, wearing his heart on his sleeve, had assumed that their relationship was finally evolving. They had navigated the ups and downs, and in his mind, it was time to take things to the next level. Yet, the indifference radiating from Sophia hit him like a ton of bricks.

Alexander took a deep breath, ready to continue the struggle to bridge the growing gap between them. “Sophia, I thought… I thought we were moving forward, you know? After everything we’ve been through.”

The subtle play of shadows on Sophia’s face revealed a flicker of vulnerability before she controlled herself. “Moving forward? Alexander, we’re just here. Where we’ve always been. No need to read into things.”

Alexander’s frustration bubbled to the surface. “No need to read into things? Sophia, we’ve been through a lot, and I thought we were on the same page.”

Sophia, seemingly unfazed, twirled a strand of her hair absentmindedly. ” Same page? Look, Alex, it’s not that complicated. We’re just friends, right? No need to complicate things.”

Alexander’s eyes reflected a mix of hurt and confusion. “Friends? After everything? I thought we had something more.”

Sophia’s indifference remained steadfast. “We’re fine the way we are. No need to make it into a big deal.”

For Alexander, those words were a blow to the gut. It was as if all the efforts, the shared moments, and the hope he had invested in their connection were rendered meaningless. The room echoed with a heavy silence.

But in Alexander’s eyes, there was a flicker of something more-a realization that the narrative he had crafted in his mind about their relationship didn’t align with Sophia’s perspective. The emotional disconnection widened.

The air between Alexander and Sophia crackled with unspoken tension. Determined to peel away Sophia’s calm facade, Alexander took a deep breath, ready to drop the bombshell that he hoped would shake her indifference.

“So, Sophia, you know what Megan proposed to me last night?” Alexander asked, his tone full with frustration.

Sophia, with an air of studied nonchalance, looked up from her phone. “Oh, do enlighten me,” she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Her eyes met his, revealing nothing but a poker face.

Feeling a twinge of irritation, Alexander continued, “Megan proposed a marriage contract. Can you believe that?”

Sophia’s response was far from what he expected. She shrugged, a dismissive gesture that caught him off guard.” Why are you telling me this? It’s none of my business, Alexander.”

Her indifference stung more than he cared to admit. “None of your business? Sophia, this involves you too. Megan wants us to announce our engagement.

Sophia’s lips curled into a sardonic smile. “Well, if Megan wants you to wear a pink tutu and dance the cha- cha, would that be my business too?”

Alexander’s frustration simmered beneath the surface. “Sophia, this is serious. Megan thinks it’s a good deal for both of us.”

Sophia crossed her arms, a picture of indifference. “Good deal? You’re a grown man, Alexander. Make your own decisions. I couldn’t care less about your deals with Megan.”

Her coldness struck a nerve. Alexander, desperate to elicit any emotional response, pushed further. “Don’t you have anything to say about it? Doesn’t it bother you?”

Sophia met his gaze with a cool detachment. “Bother me? Why would it? If you want to marry Megan, go ahead. It’s your life.”

The words landed like a punch to the gut, but Alexander refused to back down. “You’re lying, Sophia. I know you better than that. There’s got to be something.”

She smiled. “You don’t know me, Alexander. And frankly, I don’t know why you’re bothering me with your Megan drama.”

Alexander, feeling a surge of frustration and hurt, took a step back.” Fine, Sophia. I get it. I won’t bother you anymore.”

As he angrily left her doorstep, slamming the door behind him, Sophia’s calm exterior finally cracked. She sank onto the couch, a mixture of emotions swirling within her. Unbeknownst to Alexander, her indifferent facade had been a shield against the storm of conflicting feelings.

Meanwhile, Alexander, fueled by a sense of desperation, pulled out his phone and dialed Megan’s number. “I accept your offer,” he said, the weight of his decision settling in his chest.

On the other end of the line, Megan’s voice carried triumph and satisfaction. “Smart choice, Alexander. We’re going to be a power couple, taking control of Horizon Media Holdings. Just imagine the possibilities.”

Despite the gravity of his decision, a sense of emptiness lingered within Alexander. The victory Megan painted felt hollow, and the image of Sophia’s cold indifference haunted him.

Chapter 110

“Sophia’s Part of the Collateral Damage.”

The morning sun streamed through the office windows. Sophia, usually composed and focused, couldn’t shake the unsettling feeling that gnawed at her. Despite her claims of indifference, the news about Alexander and Megan’s escapades had invaded her thoughts, refusing to let go.

The first blow came as she scrolled through her social media feed, expecting the usual mundane updates. Instead, she was met with a barrage of posts about Alexander and Megan. Candid photos of them together, cozy dinners, and hashtags like # PowerCouple flooded her screen. Sophia’s fingers froze over her phone, her heart rate quickening.

Megan, never one to shy away from publicity, had confirmed the rumors with a post of her own. A carefully crafted caption accompanied a photo of her and Alexander’s smiles plastered on their faces. “Exploring the depths of love and considering a forever,” it read. Sophia’s jaw tightened, and a bitter taste settled in her mouth.

The office break room, usually a haven for coffee breaks and light banter, had transformed into a breeding ground for gossip. Colleagues huddled in small groups, whispered conversations punctuating the air. Sophia couldn’t escape the murmurings about Alexander and Megan. It felt like a relentless buzz, a constant reminder of a reality she tried to dismiss.

As she poured herself a cup of coffee, she overheard snippets of conversations.

“Did you see the post? Megan and Alexander are practically inseparable!”

“They’re talking about marriage already. Can you believe it?”

Sophia decided to leave because she had enough of this marriage thing. As she returned to her desk, the echoes of her own words haunted her.

The unsettled feeling lingered. She replayed the scenes of Alexander and Megan’s newfound public romance in her mind, each image etching itself into her consciousness. The weight of the gossip and the constant scrutiny bore down on her, leaving Sophia questioning the foundations of the relationships she had held dear.

In Alexander’s office, the atmosphere buzzed with a peculiar tension that mirrored the chaos now unfolding in his personal life. Laura, his secretary, known for her efficiency and discretion, entered the room carrying a stack of papers. The air seemed to thicken as she closed the door behind her.

“Alexander, have you seen what’s all over the news?” Laura asked, her eyes betraying a concern.

Alexander, sitting behind his desk, looked up with a calm demeanor that hinted at the storm beneath. “Yeah, Laura, I’ve seen it. But don’t worry, it’s all part of the plan.”

Laura arched an eyebrow, her gaze probing. “The plan? Care to fill me in?”

Alexander leaned back, his fingers intertwined. “I need this news to circulate. It’s a strategic move to get what I want.”

Laura took a seat across from Alexander. “So, what’s the endgame here? Turning a lie into the truth?”

“Exactly,” Alexander confirmed a glint of determination in his eyes. “I need everyone, including Megan, to believe in this ‘relationship.’ It’s the key to unlocking the information we need.”

Laura nodded, her mind quickly processing the implications. “And what about Sophia? How is she taking all of this?”

A flicker of emotion passed through Alexander’s eyes, but he quickly composed himself. “Sophia’s part of the collateral damage, Laura. She’ll understand later. Right now, my focus is on Megan and Horizon Media Holdings.”

As the two delved into the intricacies of the plan, the hum of the office outside seemed distant. Laura, accustomed to navigating the complexities of Alexander’s professional life, offered insights and suggestions, making the conversation a collaborative dance of strategy.

The door to Alexander’s office swung open, and in walked Megan, an air of triumph surrounding her like an invisible halo. Alexander, seated behind his desk, met her entrance with a curt nod. He rose from his chair, and they exchanged a perfunctory handshake, sealing their newfound cooperation.

“Alexander, my dear, I knew this was the beginning of something extraordinary,” Megan purred, her voice dripping with satisfaction.

Alexander, his face betraying no emotion, cut straight to business. ” Let’s get to it then. I’ve already instructed the legal department and my personal lawyer to draw up the business cooperation contract and the marriage contract.”

Megan, undeterred by the formalities, leaned in, her movements calculatedly intimate. She traced a finger along the edge of Alexander’s desk. Unfazed, he maintained a steely composure.

“I can’t wait for the world to see us as a power couple, Alexander. This is just the beginning,” Megan whispered, her lips dangerously close to his ear.

Alexander, swallowing his discomfort, resisted the urge to push her away. Instead, he nodded curtly. “It’s all part of the plan, Megan.”

She grinned, her confidence unwavering. “And what a plan it is. Now, why don’t we celebrate? Let’s go back to the villa and share the good news with your mother.”

Alexander, his mind already strategizing the next steps, held up a hand. “Hold on. I need to call my mother first.”

Megan, slightly taken aback by the sudden pause, raised an eyebrow.” What for? Let’s surprise her in person. She’d love that.”

Alexander’s expression remained inscrutable. “I need to prepare her for the news, Megan. Give me a moment.”

As Megan reluctantly retreated from his personal space, Alexander picked up his phone. The moment Alexander dialed his mother’s number, he wasn’t prepared for the whirlwind of emotions that would come crashing through the phone.

The call connected, and before he could even say a word, Caroline’s voice, laced with disbelief and outrage, erupted on the other end.

“Alexander! What is going on? Why are there rumors about you and Megan all over the media? Tell me this is some kind of sick joke!”

Alexander winced at the intensity of Caroline’s screams. He tried to find the right words, but the torrent of questions and accusations made it challenging to get a word in.

“Mom, calm down.” he attempted, but Caroline wasn’t having any of it.

“To calm down? Alexander, I’ve spent my entire morning fending off calls from relatives, friends, and nosy neighbors! They’re all asking if my son is getting married to Megan, that woman I’ve never trusted.”

The weight of Caroline’s disappointment hung heavy in the air.

“I won’t accept this, Alexander. I won’t have Megan as a part of this family. The only person suitable for you is Sophia.”

Megan, who had been standing nearby, initially wearing an air of confidence, suddenly found herself in an awkward situation. She shot a glance at Alexander, a hint of discomfort flickering across her face.

Chapter 111

“This isn’t the Time for Your Games.”

The walls of Sophia’s office seemed to close in as she stood in front of the panoramic window, gazing out over the cityscape below. The familiar skyline, usually a source of inspiration, now felt like a backdrop to the chaos unfolding within her professional world.

Her fingers absentmindedly scrolled through the news on her phone, and the headline that greeted her sent shockwaves through her system. ”

Alexander and Megan Forge Unlikely Alliance – Business and Romance Collide.”

Sophia wondered why she kept watching the news about them as she absorbed the implications of the headline. She grew frustrated with herself for caring. Her phone buzzed with an incoming call. The screen displayed Benjamin’s name.

“Benjamin, can you believe this mess?” Sophia exclaimed once she answered the call.

Benjamin’s deep chuckle came through the phone. “Sophia, my friend, it seems like we’ve got ourselves a wild twist in this plot. Alexander teaming up with Megan? That’s a curveball.”

Sophia sighed, the weight of the situation settling in. “I never saw it coming. We need to reassess our strategy, but we can’t let it derail our plan.”

Benjamin agreed, his tone serious now. “Exactly. We stick to the plan. This is just a bump in the road. We need to keep our eyes on the prize.”

Sophia nodded, even though Benjamin couldn’t see her. “Agreed. We can’t let Alexander’s change of alliances throw us off course. What’s our next move?”

Benjamin paused for a moment before suggesting, “How about taking a break, Sophia? Clear your mind.

Coincidentally, I’ve got a small case in Boston. You’ve been thinking about establishing a new office there, right?”

Sophia, appreciating the timely suggestion, considered the offer. ” Boston could be a good change of scenery. Let me think about it. We’ll stay the course, Benjamin, no matter what.”

They exchanged a few more words of reassurance before ending the call. Sophia leaned back in her chair, contemplating the whirlwind of events. A break sounded tempting, and the idea of exploring business opportunities in Boston seemed like a silver lining amidst the chaos.

Later that day, Sophia found herself immersed in thoughts about Boston. The city held the promise of new beginnings, a chance to escape the tangled mess of relationships and alliances that now defined her professional life. She mulled over the idea of taking a break from the intense drama and diving into a fresh venture.

As Sophia was thinking her phone’s sudden ring interrupted the rhythm of her thoughts. Caroline’s name illuminated the screen, casting a shadow of uncertainty on the newfound ideas of a break and a fresh start.

Swallowing the unease that crept into her stomach, Sophia debated whether to answer the call. She hesitated for a moment, unsure of what news or developments might be waiting on the other end.

“Hello, Caroline. How are you?” Sophia greeted cautiously, her voice reflecting a subtle tension.

Caroline’s voice, usually warm and welcoming, sounded a bit strained. ” Sophia, dear, I was wondering if you’d join me for dinner at the villa. There’s something important we need to talk about.”

Sophia furrowed her brow in surprise. Caroline’s invitations were usually filled with warmth and joy, but today, there was an air of solemnity that left Sophia intrigued and apprehensive. “Of course, Caroline. I’ll be there. Is everything okay?”

Caroline hesitated before responding, ” We’ll talk when you get here, dear. It’s about Alexander and this engagement business. I really don’t like this.”

Sophia’s mind raced with questions, but she held back, not wanting to press Caroline over the phone. “Alright, I’ll head over soon.”

Once the call ended. Sophia was curious. Why Alexander’s mother would want to talk to her about his marriage? The unexpected invitation and Caroline’s cryptic mention of Alexander’s engagement news left Sophia with a sense of foreboding.

Sophia approached the villa nervously. She still didn’t know why she agreed to come here so easily. Little did she expect the scene that awaited her at the doorstep. As she reached for the doorknob, there stood Alexander and Megan, side by side, Megan shamelessly clutching onto Alexander’s hand. The unexpected encounter caught Sophia off guard, freezing her in a moment of surprise.

“Hey, Sophia!” Alexander greeted, a forced smile playing on his face. Megan, on the other hand, wore a triumphant grin that could rival a cat that got the cream.

“Surprise, surprise!” Megan chimed in, her tone dripping with insincere cheer. “Alexander brought me to have dinner with Caroline. We thought we’d give her a taste of what’s to come since we’ll soon be family.”

Sophia’s eyebrows shot up at the audacity of Megan’s proclamation. The air buzzed with tension as Megan continued, proudly asserting herself, ” I’ll soon be the new mistress of the villa, you know.”

Sophia, not one to mince words, responded with a coldness that sliced through the boastful atmosphere.”

Good for you, Megan. I’m not particularly interested in who Alexander decides to consider as his family member in the future.”

She shot a pointed look at Alexander, her expression conveying disappointment and indifference. Without waiting for a response, Sophia brushed past them, ignoring the awkwardness that hung in the air like an unwelcome guest.

Alexander found himself caught in a crossfire of emotions. The air became heavy with unspoken words, and the strained atmosphere demanded resolution.

Alexander could not ignore the coldness that emanated from Sophia. The casual indifference in her demeanor felt like a sharp contrast to the intricate dance of emotions within him.

Alexander, unable to contain the turmoil within, shot a cold glare in Megan’s direction. “Megan, enough. This isn’t the time for your games,” he scolded, his voice cutting through the strained atmosphere.

Megan, momentarily taken aback by the unexpected rebuke, tried to salvage the situation with a feigned innocence. “I was just trying to lighten the mood, Alexander. No need to be so serious.”

But Alexander, his attention fixated on Sophia’s indifferent facade, was unmoved. He felt a tormenting turmoil within, a nagging question that echoed in his mind: What does it take to enter Sophia’s heart?

Chapter 112

“Wait, You’re Leaving?”

Sophia breezed into the villa, and the butler hurried over to snatch her coat. As she handed it to him, a sudden gasp escaped his lips. Sophia shot him an incredulous look, and he hurriedly averted his eyes, fixating on the floor.

“Whoops, my bad for the outburst. But seriously, your dress is stunning,” he mumbled before briskly walking away.

Sophia grinned. It’s her go-to dress, a sleek black cocktail number, but the seamstress sprinkled a bit of magic on it. The dress hugged her curves just right, flaunting her sculpted figure.

Megan and Alexander trailed in behind her. The moment Megan’s eyes locked onto Sophia, a frown creased on her forehead. Alexander didn’t react, but he lingered a tad longer with a contemplative gaze.

Ignoring the brewing drama, Sophia pivoted to Caroline, who was there to greet them. Caroline pulled her into a warm hug.

“Hey, sweetie! You look absolutely gorgeous,” Caroline chirped. “Come on in and make yourself at home.”

“I’m glad to see you,” Sophia said, her tone warm as she greeted Caroline. Caroline shifted her attention from Sophia to Alexander and Megan, and immediately, her smile faltered.

“I didn’t expect you two to come,” Caroline said, her gaze accusing as she looked at Alexander.

“It was a surprise,” Alexander explained, offering an apologetic smile to his mother.

“And what kind of surprise is this?” she scoffed, skepticism evident in her voice.

Caroline hugged her son but conspicuously avoided any contact with Megan. Just as she was about to turn back to Sophia, Megan interjected.

“I’m so glad to meet you,” Megan began, attempting to break the ice.

Caroline responded with a wry smile and a nod.

“Let’s not go overboard. I do not accept your marriage. I want this to be clear. Now let’s have dinner,” Caroline announced with a decisive tone.

“Mother,” scolded Alexander, a hint of frustration in his voice. Caroline turned her back on them, instantly grabbing Sophia’s arm. Megan glanced at Alexander, but he deliberately avoided her gaze.

The air in the room felt tense as Megan tried to shake off the lingering discomfort from Caroline’s blatant disapproval. While everyone else prepared for dinner, Megan couldn’t help but stew in a cocktail of resentment and frustration.

Her eyes locked onto Sophia, betraying a sense of injustice. To Megan, it seemed like she was being unfairly measured against an invisible yardstick. She had always been confident in her ability to navigate social dynamics, but the cold reception from Caroline hit a nerve.

“What’s so special about her, anyway?”

Megan muttered under her breath, more to herself than anyone else. The question lingered, unanswered, as she begrudgingly followed the others to the dining area.

Seated at the table, Megan couldn’t help but replay the events that led to this awkward dinner. She and Alexander had a history.

“If only Sophia hadn’t barged in,” Megan mused silently, the bitterness evident in her thoughts. In her version of the narrative, if Sophia hadn’t been a constant presence, their relationship might have evolved to a point where marriage was the next logical step. The “what-ifs” danced in Megan’s mind, fueling her resentment.

The aroma of dinner filled the air as everyone gathered around the table. The dining room, usually a place of warmth and shared laughter, felt oddly strained tonight. Sophia couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

Megan, ever the provocateur, held onto Alexander’s hand like a prized possession. She babbled on incessantly about wedding plans, her excitement palpable in every word. Sophia couldn’t help but feel a twinge of discomfort at the display of affection. She glanced at Alexander, who sat there like an unwilling participant, responding to Megan’s chatter with a distant politeness.

As the dishes were passed around, the clinking of silverware against plates created a discordant melody. Sophia tried to focus on her food, but Megan’s animated descriptions of floral arrangements and venue choices infiltrated her thoughts.

“So, Alexander, I was thinking we could have a destination wedding,” Megan gushed, her eyes fixed on him as if awaiting his approval.

Alexander, seemingly indifferent, nodded casually. “Sure, whatever you want.”

Sophia couldn’t help but notice the lack of enthusiasm in his response. It was as if he was going through the motions, detached from the wedding planning whirlwind that Megan was so enthusiastically creating.

The more Megan rambled on about color schemes and guest lists, the more Sophia felt like an intruder in this surreal tableau. She stole glances at Alexander, hoping for some sign of discomfort, but his poker face remained intact.

As the evening wore on, Sophia found herself caught in a silent dance of awkward glances with Alexander. Each time their eyes met, an unspoken tension lingered in the air.

Caroline, tired of Megan’s constant chatter, decided to redirect the conversation. “Sophia, dear, what happened to you in London must have been terrible,” Caroline began sympathetically.

Sophia, appreciating the shift in topic, nodded. “Yes, but the important thing is that it’s over,” she replied with a smile.

Caroline continued, “And all this stress, I really admire you for handling it.”

Sophia shrugged off the compliment modestly. “Thanks. It’s all in the past now.”

Seizing the opportunity to lighten the atmosphere, Caroline turned to Sophia with an eager proposal. “Why don’t we go on a vacation together, just the two of us? It would be a great way to unwind, don’t you think?”

Sophia caught off guard, hesitated for a moment. She appreciated Caroline’s warmth and the genuine offer, but a knot of uncertainty tightened in her stomach. “Caroline, that sounds amazing, truly. But I might not be able to accept the invitation,” she said, trying to find the right words.

Caroline’s smile faltered for a brief moment before she pressed on, “Why not, dear? A little break could do wonders for both of us.””

Sophia sighed, feeling the weight of her upcoming decisions. “I’m actually headed to Boston. Benjamin has this new business venture, and he wants me to help set up a new office there. It’s a big project, and it could take anywhere from one month to half a year.”

Caroline’s expression shifted to understanding, though a tinge of disappointment lingered. “Boston, huh? Well, business calls. But remember, the offer stands whenever you’re ready.”

Sophia nodded appreciatively. “Thank you, Caroline. I’ll definitely keep that in mind.”

As the conversation unfolded, Alexander overheard the mention of Sophia’s impending departure. His surprise was palpable, evident in the way his eyes widened and his brows furrowed.

“Wait, you’re leaving?” Alexander interjected. Sophia met his gaze. “Yes, Alexander. I have a lot of work to do, and I’ve got a lot on my plate in Boston.”

His reaction was a mix of surprise and something deeper, an emotion he couldn’t quite put into words. “Boston? That’s sudden. I thought…” he trailed off, his words hanging in the air.

Sophia, sensing the unfinished sentence, filled in the blanks. “You thought what, Alexander?”

Chapter 113

“Better Half, Huh?”

As Sophia dropped the bombshell about heading to Boston for Benjamin’s new venture, the surprise on Alexander’s face was unmistakable, and he couldn’t resist a sarcastic quip.

“Oh, I just didn’t expect a high-profile lawyer like you to be handling such small tasks personally,” he remarked, his tone dripping with thinly veiled mockery.

Sophia, aware of the unnecessary personal involvement in the matter and the relatively modest scale of the new office, felt a twinge of self- awareness. Deep down, she knew that she had no reason to be hands-on with this venture. It was a small operation that could easily be managed without her direct intervention. So why did she choose to divulge this information?

Alexander’s sarcastic remark hung in the air, and Sophia responded with a casual shrug. “Why not, right? A change of pace, a different challenge. Keeps things interesting.”

Megan chimed in, “Boston sounds nice.

Sophia shot Megan a brief, unreadable look. “Sometimes, you need to step out of the familiar to discover something new. Like you Alexander, you are getting married, hopefully, you will be able to keep it this time.”

Sophia sipped from her glass with a wide smile directed at Alexander. She wasn’t going to let him make fun of her and her decisions. He gave her a cold look but returned her smile.

Caroline sensed that the conversation was not going in the direction she wanted and intervened.

“You were in London together, weren’t you?” she asked.

Sophia hesitated for a moment, glancing at Alexander, who was silently observing the unfolding exchange. Yes,” she finally agreed. “And Alexander actually helps me a lot all the time.”

Sophia felt compelled to mention it but deliberately avoided Alexander’s gaze, aware of the complex emotions that lingered between them. In the span of moments, the atmosphere shifted, leaving Alexander puzzled by their interaction. Just a second ago they were bickering like little children, and now she looked grateful for his help.

“I’m glad he was there for you. It should be,” Caroline affirmed, her eyes switching between Sophia and Alexander. “Tell me more about the case.”

Sophia launched into a detailed account of the intricate legal matters in London, skillfully navigating the narrative to focus on the professional aspects rather than the personal dynamics. She emphasized Alexander’s supportive role without delving into the nuances that lay beneath the surface.

Sophia recounted some of her experiences in London, eliciting genuine interest and amusement from Caroline. Alexander, despite his initial skepticism, found himself engaged in the banter, caught between Sophia’s charm and his mother’s warmth.

However, amidst the laughter and camaraderie, Megan felt like a mere spectator. She tried to interject, throwing in comments and trying to steer the conversation in her direction, but it was like swimming against the current. The rapport between Sophia and the Stones felt so natural that Megan couldn’t find an entry point.

Sophia, unaware of Megan’s discomfort, continued to converse effortlessly. At times, she would exchange knowing glances with Alexander, as if they shared some unspoken connection. Megan couldn’t shake the feeling that Sophia was seamlessly integrating into the Stone family, overshadowing her presence.

As the evening progressed, Megan’s attempts to engage in the conversation became more strained. She felt like an outsider trying to break into an exclusive circle. The realization hit her with a pang of discomfort – Sophia was becoming a part of this family, a role Megan had envisioned for herself.

After dinner, Caroline excused herself, mentioning that she needed to rest, and she suggested that Alexander take Sophia to see the new decorations in the villa. Sophia, not entirely comfortable with the idea of being alone with Alexander, quickly interjected, “Why not bring Megan along too? It would be more fun that way.”

Alexander, glancing at Sophia curiously, shrugged nonchalantly.” Sure, why not? The more, the merrier.”

Megan, who had been eyeing the exchange between Alexander and Sophia, chimed in with an air of faux innocence, “Oh, I’d love to see the decorations. Lead the way, Alexander.”

The trio embarked on a tour of the villa, with Alexander playing the role of a reluctant guide, Sophia maintaining a polite but distant demeanor, and Megan injecting bits of unnecessary enthusiasm into the mix.

As they strolled through the elegantly decorated rooms, Sophia couldn’t shake the feeling of awkwardness that permeated the air.

At one point, Megan suggested, “Why don’t we check out the garden? It must be beautiful in the moonlight.”

Sophia managed a tight smile and nodded, “Sure, I’d love to see the garden too.”

As they stepped into the moonlit garden, the tension escalated. Megan, feigning admiration for the flora, strategically positioned herself closer to Alexander. Sophia, not one to be outplayed, maintained a composed facade while internally navigating the emotional labyrinth that this unexpected evening had become.

In the enchanting ambiance of the greenhouse, Megan excused herself momentarily, leaving Alexander and Sophia temporarily alone.

The fragrant blossoms surrounded them, casting a delicate perfume in the air as if nature itself conspired to heighten the intimacy of the moment.

Alexander, unable to contain his curiosity, turned to Sophia with a playful glint in his eyes. “So, what’s the real reason for wanting Megan to join us? Are you avoiding the impending matrimonial talk, Soph?”

Sophia, ever the picture of composure, looked at him with a raised eyebrow. 11 Don’t flatter yourself, Alexander. I have no interest in your wedding plans.”

He leaned against a tree trunk, narrowing the proximity between them, his voice adopting a teasing tone. “Are you sure about that? You seem pretty interested in avoiding the topic altogether.”

Sophia, feeling the magnetic pull of his presence, stood her ground. “I have my reasons. None of which involve your impending nuptials.”

Alexander inched closer, trapping Sophia gently against the sturdy tree. ” Come on, Soph. You can tell me. Is it jealousy? Concern? Or maybe just curiosity about who’s stealing me away from our late-night drinks and deep conversations?”

Sophia, caught off guard by the sudden proximity, couldn’t help but feel a flutter of emotions. “It’s none of those. I just think Megan should be a part of everything if she’s going to be your better half.”

Alexander, his gaze intense, questioned with a hint of mischief, “Better half, huh? Do you think she’s a better half for me?”

Sophia, refusing to be drawn into a debate, retorted, “That’s for you to decide. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”

But before Sophia could step away, Alexander, with a smirk, gently pressed her against the tree trunk, the teasing banter transforming into a charged atmosphere. “Tell me, Sophia, do you care about me getting married? Does it bother you at all?”

Caught in the magnetic pull of his gaze and the proximity that danced on the edge of something more, Sophia hesitated. The unspoken tension hung in the air, charged with unexplored emotions. As they leaned in closer, on the precipice of a moment that could redefine their dynamic, Megan’s voice shattered the spell.

“Alexander! Sophia! Where are you?” Megan’s voice called from nearby, abruptly pulling them back to reality.

The spell was broken, and the momentary intimacy dissolved. Sophia, slightly breathless, shot a pointed look at Alexander. “Saved by Megan, who would’ve thought?” she remarked.

Alexander, chuckling, stepped back, restoring a semblance of distance between them. “And who will save you from the thought that you were inches away from kissing me?”

With that, Alexander backed away completely and walked in Megan’s direction.

Chapter 114

“Falling for His Games, Again?”

In the moonlit garden, Sophia leaned against the cool marble railing, a sigh escaping her lips. The night was serene, but the turmoil within her refused to mirror the tranquility of the surroundings.

“Sophia, what are you doing? Falling for his games, again?” she muttered to herself, frustration lacing her voice. ” He’s playing the part, acting like he doesn’t care, and I’m letting it get under my skin. It’s infuriating!”

A gentle breeze rustled the leaves as if nature itself was whispering words of solace. Sophia took a deep breath, trying to steady the storm of emotions raging within.

“Why do I let him affect me like this?” she continued a hint of self-reproach in her tone. “He flirts with Megan, and I should just roll my eyes and move on. But no, here I am, tangled up in this emotional mess.”

Sophia’s gaze drifted toward the distant glow of the villa. Laughter echoed faintly, a stark contrast to the internal conflict that threatened to consume her.

“He’s stubborn, deliberately testing my patience,” she reflected, a wry smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “But what’s his game? Why act like he doesn’t care and then subtly change his tune?”

Sophia snarled in her anger and punches the metal fence. She is always in control of her emotions, but when she gets close to Alexander, she simply cannot recognize herself.

“Whatever his game is, I can’t let it cloud my judgment,” she affirmed, a newfound determination in her voice. ” I won’t be a pawn in his emotional chessboard. If he thinks he can toy with my feelings, he’s got another thing coming.”

Sophia straightened, a sense of resolve settling over her. As she made her way back to the villa, the echoes of laughter and conversation grew louder. The emotional tug-of-war continued, but Sophia, armed with newfound clarity, was prepared to navigate the intricate dance with Alexander on her terms.

As soon as she entered, Alexander’s gaze slided over her. She tried to look away, but she couldn’t. The scene from a while ago played out before her eyes, his closeness, the way he looked at her.

Sophia lowered her eyes and tried to hide the blush that had crept up her cheeks. She quickly came to her senses and sat down on the sofa near them. But she couldn’t look up at him without blushing anew. Sophia felt like all control was slipping away and it both angered and terrified her.

Megan didn’t miss their exchange of glances. The laughter she shared with Alexander a minute ago died down. She shot glances between Alexander and Sophia, her curiosity reaching its boiling point as her jealousy.

“What’s going on here?” Megan’s voice cut through the tension, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.

Alexander, sensing the impending storm, stepped in to diffuse the situation. “Megan, relax. Sophia and I were just catching up. We were waiting for you. You know you can trust me, especially now that we’re about to get married.”

Megan’s skeptical gaze remained fixed on Alexander, but he continued his attempt to reassure her. “There’s no need for doubts, Megan. We’re building a life together, and I want you to believe in us.”

Megan, though still suspicious, seemed to buy into Alexander’s explanation. ” Well, alright. Sorry for assuming the worst.”

Alexander, adopting the role of the devoted fiancé, leaned in towards Megan, his tone dipped in warmth. ” Megan, you mean a lot to me. There’s no room for doubt in our relationship. You’re the one I’ve been waiting for, and I want our journey together to be built on trust and transparency.”

Megan’s expression softened as she absorbed Alexander’s words. The tension that had gripped the room seemed to dissipate, replaced by an air of reassurance. She reached for Alexander’s hand, a small smile playing on her lips.

“Alexander, I want to believe in us, in our future together,” Megan admitted, her skepticism giving way to a glimmer of hope. Alexander, maintaining the façade of unwavering commitment, pressed a gentle kiss to Megan’s forehead.

Sophia observed the charade, an uncomfortable knot forming in her stomach. She felt disgusted by Alexander’s behavior, knowing that less than 10 minutes ago he would have kissed her.

“I think I’ve overstayed my welcome,” Sophia interjected, her attempt to lighten the mood falling flat.

Alexander, ever the gentleman, offered a solution. “I’ll have the driver take you home, Sophia.”

As the car sped through the city, Sophia couldn’t shake off the unease that clung to her.

“He’s getting married,” she muttered under her breath. “And has the audacity to lie to his future wife with me. I won’t allow it.”

Once Sophia made her exit, Alexander delicately disentangled himself from Megan’s embrace. With an air of apparent concern, he shifted the conversation, proposing a collaboration that would intertwine their professional worlds.

“You know, Megan,” Alexander began, his expression portraying a thoughtful concern, “I’ve been thinking about our businesses. What if we bring our companies closer together? I could have some of my top people join your company’s management team. It’s not just good for us but also for the synergy of our endeavors.”

Megan, intrigued by the proposal, leaned back and considered the idea. ” You think that would work? Having your team in my company?”

Alexander nodded, his eyes locked onto Megan’s. “Absolutely. It’s a win-win. We pool our resources, share expertise, and create a powerhouse that dominates the market. Plus, it’ll bring us even closer, not just personally but professionally too.”

Megan, swayed by the allure of success and perhaps a desire to deepen her connection with Alexander, found herself nodding in agreement. “You know what, Alexander? That sounds like a fantastic idea. Let’s do it. I’m all in.”

Megan, happy but still a little skeptical, decided to ask Alexander.

“Alexander, I didn’t expect you to be this involved in my company affairs,” Megan questioned, her eyes scrutinizing Alexander’s expression.

Alexander leaned in slightly, adopting a confiding tone. “No catch, Megan. Just imagine the impact we could have together. A power couple both in our personal lives and in the business world. This move will not only elevate our professional standings but strengthen our personal connection too.”

Megan, always drawn to the allure of power and success, couldn’t help but smile. And that was exactly what Alexander wanted her to believe.

Chapter 115

“Tomorrow We Start.”

When Alexander was finally able to send Megan away, he breathed a sigh of relief. He decided it was high time to do some work and stop playing the role of the concerned husband.

Determined to shift gears, he briskly made his way to his office. Ascending the staircase with purpose, Alexander closed the door behind him, shutting out the outside world. The faint click resonated in the room, signifying a transition from pretense to practicality.

In the seclusion of his office, Alexander allowed himself a moment of respite. The restricting tie was casually loosened and carelessly discarded onto the polished surface of his desk. A tangible exhale escaped him as he liberated his neck from the sartorial constraint.

With a swift motion, he reached for a crystal decanter, the amber liquid within whispering promises of solace. The rich aroma of aged whiskey filled the room as he poured a generous measure into a heavy-bottomed glass.

Seated in a plush leather chair, Alexander cradled the glass in his hand, the amber liquid catching the ambient light. The gentle swirls within mirrored the whirlwind of thoughts that occupied his mind.

He had set everything in motion back in London. Alexander made a promise to Sophia, and he took his promises seriously. He would do anything to provide Sophia with the information she needed to take down Megan.

He knew that gaining Megan’s trust wouldn’t be easy; he had known her for years and understood that she would do anything to stay in a position of power. However, he felt that this was also her biggest weakness.

Alexander was no fool. When Megan offered him a collaboration, he was sure something was amiss with her company, making it the perfect time to take advantage of the situation.

He offered her his assistance, knowing that once she let him inside Enlighten Press, it would be child’s play if she trusted him. The information he needed to help Sophia would be there, and he would be able to assist her.

Alexander opens his laptop and places the glass of whiskey on the desk. Opening his mailbox, it’s flooded with congratulating emails about his engagement.

Alexander smiles bitterly. The engagement wasn’t something he planned, but he still managed to use it to his advantage.

The moment Megan poisoned his drink and orchestrated the scandal, his plan took another form. As soon as he woke up in the morning, his foremost concern was Sophia’s feelings.

He couldn’t bear the thought of Sophia being hurt for anything in the world. In haste, he went to her apartment to provide an explanation. Alexander was prepared to abandon his plan the moment Sophia indicated that she didn’t want him around Megan.

He was ready to change his plans completely, even invent new ones and bury the collaboration with Megan, but Sophia remained cold and uninterested. Despite their time in London, where he thought they were starting to form some sort of relationship, Sophia seemed reluctant to involve herself with him.

So his agreeing to Megan’s proposal of engagement would at least secure Megan’s trust, and it served him another purpose as well. Alexander was provoking Sophia to show if she cared at all for him. He had to know.

The image of Sophia, her eyes reflecting a mix of anger and disappointment, lingered in Alexander’s mind like a vivid painting. He couldn’t shake off the intensity of that gaze, the emotions etched in the depths of her eyes haunting his thoughts.

As he took a sip of his whiskey, the amber liquid providing a momentary distraction, Alexander couldn’t escape the gnawing curiosity about Sophia’s true feelings. She pushed him away all the time, and even though it hurt him, he loved her.

Undeterred by Sophia’s reluctance, Alexander was unwilling to give up on being her support. He was determined to see his plan through, regardless of whether Sophia reciprocated his feelings.

As Alexander navigated through his emails, he spotted a message from Kyle and a smile crept across his face. Over time, the two had forged a strong friendship, and Alexander had come to rely on Kyle’s skills and trustworthiness.

They had gone out for drinks a few times and it turned out that the two of them got along well and had common visions and goals. Alexander highly valued Kyle’s work, he was the one who had helped him figure out who his ex- wife was.

Kyle, known for his exceptional ability to unearth information and act as a sharp detective, had proven to be an invaluable ally. Alexander was confident that by bringing Kyle into Enlighten Press, they could expose all of Megan’s well-guarded secrets.

The email from Kyle was brief yet reassuring.

“Everything sounds good; you will surely get what you want. Just say when we start.”

Responding promptly, Alexander hastily typed detailed instructions and a list of specific areas for Kyle to investigate. He concluded the email with a decisive statement:

“Tomorrow we start.”

When he had finished his meticulous work on the laptop, Alexander leaned back in his chair. He ran his hands over his face and sighed.

Tomorrow would bring new challenges, and he needed to be thoroughly prepared. Glancing at the time on his computer, he noted that it was already two o’clock.

The quiet of the room enveloped him as he contemplated the tasks that lay ahead.

The respite in Alexander’s study was short-lived. A gentle knock echoed through the room, the sound heralding the intrusion of the outside world. Alexander, engrossed in his contemplations, looked up as the door swung open, revealing the maternal figure of Caroline.

“Alexander, dear, may I come in?” Caroline’s voice filled the room.

Alexander, recognizing the tone, set aside his glass and leaned back in his chair. “Of course, Mother. Come on in.” He gestured toward the inviting leather chair opposite his desk.

Caroline stepped into the study, her eyes scanning the room briefly before settling on her son. The lines on her face spoke of both a mother’s love and the wisdom of experience. She took a seat, her gaze unwavering.

Chapter 116

“Dumb Womanizer.”

Caroline fixed her gaze on Alexander, her eyes reflecting a mix of disappointment and maternal concern. The room, adorned with elegant furnishings, became the backdrop to a conversation heavy with unspoken emotions.

“Alexander, we need to talk about this engagement. What’s really going on?” Caroline’s voice was firm yet laden with a mother’s worry.

Alexander met her eyes, a conflict playing out in his own. “Mother, it’s complicated. Megan and I…”

Caroline cut him off with a wave of her hand. “I don’t need the intricacies. I need to understand why you’ve chosen this path. Megan is not the one for you, and you know it.”

Alexander sighed, feeling the weight of his mother’s disapproval settling on his shoulders. “I have my reasons, mother. Sophia and I… it’s complicated, too. But I have a plan.”

Caroline’s eyes flashed with intensity.” Whatever, Alexander, you’re making a mistake. Megan is not the woman you need by your side. Sophia is the one who belongs in this family.”

Alexander’s frustration bubbled to the surface. “It’s not that simple. Megan is involved in something, and I need to figure it out. Sophia and I… it’s not the right time.”

Caroline, unyielding, leaned forward. ” The right time is now. Don’t let this engagement tarnish everything you and Sophia have. She’s the one who truly understands you.”

The room echoed with the weight of unspoken emotions. Alexander, torn between duty and desire, tried to convey his internal struggle. “I promise, mother. I’ll handle everything.

Caroline’s stern expression softened for a moment. “Handle it, Alexander. Don’t let a misguided alliance ruin what you and Sophia have.”

“I know, mother. I will do whatever it takes.” Alexander promised.

Caroline fixed her eyes on Alexander, a silent understanding passing between them. “Alexander, my dear, if you truly love Sophia, you must be steadfast. Learn from your father’s mistakes; don’t waver in your commitments.”

The mention of his father, a figure from a tumultuous past, struck a chord within Alexander. A bitter taste of resentment seeped into his words. “My father is already my enemy. I won’t follow his path. I have my reasons for the choices I’m making.”

His mother, sensing the turmoil within him, wisely chose not to press the matter further. “Handle it, Alexander. Resolve Megan’s issues quickly. Sophia is upset about your involvement with her.”

Alexander, his face betraying a complex interplay of emotions, let out a bitter smile. “Mother, it seems Sophia is indifferent to my engagement with Megan. She’s not upset; she’s distant.”

Caroline leaned forward. “You underestimate her, my dear. A woman’s intuition is a powerful thing. Sophia may appear indifferent, but deep down, she’s hurt. You need to mend things before it’s too late.”

“Do you really think she has feelings for me?” Alexander asks intrigued.

Caroline laughed. “I saw it in the way you were talking tonight. That she was grateful for your help in London. And the way you looked at each other, I can tell. She likes you, but now you upset her.”

Alexander blushed slightly and shook his head. “I’ll do what I can, mother. For Sophia and for myself.”

Caroline reached out, placing a hand on his. “I believe in you, my dear. Just remember, happiness is a journey, not a destination. Make choices that lead you to the right path.”

With a nod, Alexander left the room, leaving his mother with hope and still a little concern etched on her face.

Sophia’s apartment felt cold in the late hours, the silence magnifying the echoes of her own thoughts. Tossing and turning in bed, she couldn’t escape the replay of moments shared with Alexander, especially the haunting memory of their almost kiss.

Sophia grumbled to herself, infuriated by the bewildering situation she found herself in. “How can he even think of kissing me when his fiancée is there?” She questioned, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “Who does he think he is? Does he believe he can play with me?”

The thoughts about Alexander churned in her mind, preventing any semblance of sleep. Furious, she kicked off her blanket and began pacing the room, her irritation palpable.

“With all his insolence, he has the audacity to ask me if I’m jealous. He acts as if he’s the greatest man in the world,” she scoffed, her annoyance evident in each word.

Sophia couldn’t shake off the effect Alexander had on her, and it frustrated her to no end. Despite her promises to herself, he had successfully provoked her once again.

“Dumb womanizer, that’s what he is. He thinks that everyone owes him,” she muttered bitterly, continuing her tirade.

As her mind whirled with conflicting thoughts, Sophia decided she wouldn’t find respite in sleep tonight. Determined, she headed to the kitchen, started the coffee machine, and waited for the comforting aroma of coffee to fill the air.

“And what was that in London?” She burst out again, the memory fueling her indignation. “First, we’re friends, and then he marries the enemy? Of all people, Megan!”

Outraged and in need of a distraction, she grabbed her cup of coffee and marched towards her office, the brewing storm in her mind demanding an outlet.

As she made her way to the office, the city lights painted fleeting patterns on the walls. Sophia switched on a solitary lamp, casting more warm glow across her workspace cluttered with papers. The flickering screen of her laptop beckoned, a portal to a world where she could immerse herself.

As the night wore on, Sophia became absorbed in her tasks, the process a balm for her soul. In the solitude of her apartment, Sophia’s fingers danced on the keyboard, her thoughts finding expression in the soft clicks and taps.

The rhythmic sound was a sanctuary, drowning out the haunting echoes of Alexander’s presence in her life.

The apartment, usually filled with the hum of city life, now echoed with the distant sounds of a lone jazz melody playing from a nearby radio. Sophia’s eyes were fixed on the screen, her mind weaving words and sentences like an intricate tapestry.

“Why does it have to be this way?” she mumbled to herself, her words punctuated by the soft typing. The cursor on the screen blinked as if waiting for her emotions to unfold in the digital realm.

Chapter 117

“Megan, You’re Hanging by A Thread.”

In Sophia’s office, the air hung heavy with tension as Megan entered, the usual veneer of friendliness vanishing in the absence of Alexander. The room, adorned with sleek furniture and bathed in the soft glow of ambient light, became the battleground for a clash of wills.

Sophia, sitting behind her desk, glanced up from her work with an unflinching expression. Her calm demeanor, a façade concealing the storm of emotions beneath, contrasted sharply with the subtle hum of the city filtering through the partially opened window.

Megan, with a sly smile, wasted no time dropping her pretense of friendliness. “Sophia, let’s cut the act, shall we? You and I both know you’re just a pawn in Alexander’s game. Don’t think for a second you can interfere in our relationship.”

Sophia leaned back in her chair, unfazed. “Megan, I’m not interested in your relationship with Alexander. If you’re here to warn me, save your breath. I won’t be manipulated.”

Megan, growing impatient, decided to play her cards more aggressively. “You might want to reconsider, Sophia. Alexander and I are getting married, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Sophia raised an eyebrow, her eyes piercing through Megan’s facade. The distant sounds of city traffic merged with the tense silence in the room. ” Marriage, Megan, is not a shield for deceit. I know what you did in London. Setting me up with your schemes won’t go unnoticed.”

Megan scoffed, trying to regain control of the conversation. “You think you’re so clever, don’t you? But Alexander is mine, and there’s nothing you can do to change that.”

Sophia’s lips curled into a wry smile. ” Megan, you’re mistaking my indifference for defeat. You can have Alexander, but you can’t escape the consequences of your actions.”

Sophia stood up, her gaze unwavering. “Let me make something clear. Stone Enterprise is not your playground. If you seek refuge with Alexander, it won’t save you from the fallout of your schemes.”

Megan, sensing the shift in dynamics, attempted to regain her composure. You can’t threaten me, Sophia. I have my ways of handling things.”

Sophia leaned in, her voice low and threatening. “Megan, you’re hanging by a thread. Alexander might be your lifeline, but Stone Enterprise is your empire. Lose the cooperation of Stone, and you lose everything.”

The gravity of Sophia’s words settled in, and Megan’s confident facade crumbled, revealing a hint of fear in her eyes. The scent of tension in the room grew stronger. Sophia, having delivered her warning, remained composed, her resolve unshaken.

“You may have Alexander, but remember, I have the power to bring down everything you’ve built,” Sophia declared, a subtle smirk playing on her lips as Megan left the office, visibly rattled by the encounter. The conflict between them was far from over, and Sophia had just made it clear that she wouldn’t back down.

Later that day Sophia paced back and forth in her office, the echoes of the argument with Megan still reverberating in her mind. Far from finding satisfaction or relief, the confrontation had left her more agitated, a storm of conflicting emotions raging within. The desire to break free from the tangled web of work and Alexander’s complications weighed heavily on her.

Feeling Sophia’s distress, Evelyn’s name flashed on the buzzing screen of her phone. Without hesitation, Sophia answered, “Hello?”

Evelyn’s voice echoed through the room from the phone speaker. “Hey, Soph! Sorry, I’ve been caught up in something for a few days and didn’t get a chance to reach out. How are you holding up with the Alexander drama?”

Sophia sighed, her exhaustion palpable as she confided in Evelyn. “Evelyn, it’s just been one thing after another with Alexander. I don’t know anymore. I felt that when we spent time in London…Anyway, his marriage to Meghan just doesn’t sit well with me. After everything that happened and his confession that he likes me, I really didn’t expect it.”

Evelyn voiced her frustration with an edge of scolding. “I can’t believe Alexander is putting you through all of this. It’s not fair, Soph. He needs a reality check. What’s he thinking, messing with your emotions like this?”

Sophia, appreciating Evelyn’s support, nodded in agreement. “Exactly! It’s like he’s playing some twisted game, and I’m tired of being caught in the middle of it.”

Amidst their conversation, Evelyn suggested, “You know what, Soph? We need a break. Let’s forget about Boston, forget about Alexander’s drama, and just have a good time. How about Las Vegas? It’s the perfect place to escape reality for a while.”

Sophia, despite her initial surprise at the unexpected travel proposal, couldn’t help but feel a spark of excitement. “Las Vegas, huh? It’s a bold choice, but I’m in. Anything to get away from all this madness.”

Evelyn laughed, her infectious enthusiasm filling the air. “Trust me, Soph, a little bit of craziness in Vegas is exactly what we need. It’s like hitting the reset button on life. Pack your bags; we’re escaping the drama and heading for some fun!”

Sophia, embracing the spontaneity of the moment, couldn’t help but smile. ” You know what, Evelyn? I think you’re onto something. Let’s do it. Vegas, here we come!”

In a spontaneous burst of camaraderie, the decision to escape to Las Vegas took shape. In the aftermath of Megan’s failed attempt to provoke Sophia, frustration lingered in the air. Unyielding and undeterred, Megan decided to redirect her efforts, this time aiming for Alexander’s office.

She was determined to secure her position and maintain control over the company, especially in light of Sophia’s ominous warnings.

As Megan entered Alexander’s office, a façade of confidence adorned her features. Alexander, seemingly oblivious to Megan’s recent endeavors, greeted her with a calm demeanor.” Megan, meet Kyle,” Alexander said, introducing the seemingly unassuming figure seated in his office.

Kyle extended a hand with a friendly smile. “Nice to meet you, Megan. I’ve heard a lot about Enlighten Press, and I’m eager to contribute.”

Megan, caught off guard by the introduction, reciprocated with a handshake. “Likewise, Kyle. Always good to have fresh perspectives on board.”

Alexander, the architect of this orchestrated encounter, smoothly steered the conversation. “Kyle here is one of our elite team members, specifically assigned to work closely with Enlighten Press. I believe his insights will be valuable in decision- making processes.”

Megan couldn’t help but feel a tinge of skepticism. “Decision-making processes? Why now, Alexander?”

With a reassuring smile, Alexander leaned back in his chair, adopting an air of transparency. “Megan, I’ve been reviewing the company reports, and there seem to be some issues that need addressing. Kyle’s expertise will be crucial in navigating through them and ensuring the success of this collaboration.”

Megan’s mind raced as she considered the proposal. Sophia’s warning lingered in the back of her thoughts, creating a sense of urgency.

Yet, Alexander’s logical explanation and the seemingly innocuous nature of Kyle’s role persuaded her to agree. ” Alright, Alexander. If it helps the company, I’m on board with this arrangement.”

Little did Megan know, she had just welcomed an undercover operative into her inner circle. Kyle, playing his part convincingly, masked his true mission to assist Alexander in unraveling the mysteries hidden within Enlighten Press.

As the stage was set for this intricate game of corporate intrigue, Megan unknowingly played her part, dancing on the strings of Alexander’s strategic orchestration.

Chapter 118

“Everyone’s Acting Weird, huh?

Sophia’s fingers practically flew as she shoved clothes into her suitcase, fueled by the anticipation of escaping town and leaving the Alexander drama behind. Without finishing her morning coffee, she hailed a taxi to the airport, grabbed her suitcase, and locked the door to her apartment.

In the taxi, she quickly tapped out a message to Evelyn, “I’m on my way to the airport. I know it’s earlier than we agreed, but I couldn’t wait.”

Evelyn’s response came swiftly, “I’m already walking in the duty-free shops. You’re not the only one impatient.”

Sophia chuckled and stashed her phone back in her bag, relishing the excitement of traveling with her friend after what felt like ages.

Both of their lives were very busy and they rarely saw each other, and that was why Sophia was so grateful for this opportunity to spend time together again.

At the airport, after breezing through security, Sophia headed to the cosmetics store, a hunch telling her she’d find Evelyn there. Sure enough, Evelyn was seated in front of a perfume stand, surrounded by testers, her eyes lighting up with each new scent.

“I knew you couldn’t be anywhere else, “Sophia remarked as she approached.

Evelyn giggled, hugging her friend tightly. Sophia couldn’t help but inhale a mixture of scents as Evelyn moved in for the embrace. “Girl, you won’t believe how stressful the last few days have been,” Evelyn confessed.

“Lord, I think you should stop for now. Buy one, and let’s go have a coffee,” Sophia suggested, laughing.

“Coffee?” Evelyn made a face. “Honey, we’re going to Vegas. We’ll have Mimosa.”

“At eight in the morning?” Sophia questioned.

“You know you don’t count when you’re on vacation. Somewhere in the world, it’s evening now,” Evelyn said with a wink.

The duo headed to a nearby restaurant, and before Sophia could object, Evelyn ordered two Mimosas. Rolling her eyes, Sophia didn’t protest, taking a sip of the fruity cocktail.

“Now, will you tell me why this spontaneous vacation happened?” Sophia inquired.

“Should I spoil my mood even before I’ve had my cocktail?” Evelyn pouted.

“So I’m right. Something has happened,” Sophia persisted.

“I had a fight with Kyle,” Evelyn finally admitted, her eyes clouded with frustration and sadness. Sophia’s eyes widened with surprise. ” Kyle? Your seemingly perfect boyfriend? spill it!”

Evelyn sighed “It’s a wild story. You remember how I met him through Alexander, right?”

Sophia shook her head, urging her to continue with a raise of her eyebrow. ” No, you didn’t tell me.”

“The first time I actually met Kyle was when he was drowning himself in booze with Alexander at that bar downtown. I never got around to telling you that part,” Evelyn admitted.

Sophia took a sip from her cocktail intrigued. “Okay, now you’ve got my full attention. What went down?”

Evelyn delved into the tale, “So, recently, I started sniffing around Kyle’s life. I know this sounds bad, but he has always been super secretive about his work and his family. Something just felt off. I mean, who’s that tight-lipped about their job and family, right?”

Sophia nodded, agreeing with the skepticism. “Fair point. So, what did you find out?”

“Not many. Besides being a journalist, I don’t know much about his work. I don’t understand why he hides it from me,” continued Evelyn.

“And what did you do?”

Evelyn’s eyes gleamed with mischief.” Well, the mystery surrounding him only made me more suspicious. So, I did a little detective work. When Kyle found out, we had this epic showdown.”

Sophia couldn’t resist asking, “What were you looking for?”

Evelyn took a deep breath, her gaze fixed on some distant memory.” Remember when I got kidnapped? It was Kyle who fed Alexander crucial info about the kidnapper.”

Sophia’s jaw dropped. “Wait, what? Kyle saved you, and you didn’t even know? This is like some Hollywood plot twist!”

Evelyn nodded her emotions on a rollercoaster. “I know, right? And when I asked him about it, he exploded. He said it was no business of mine to pry into his life.”

Sophia frowned thoughtfully, unable to shake the mention of Alexander and his unexpected role. He had once been the hero, helping save her best friend with Kyle’s assistance, and later lending a hand in London. Now, he seemed to be playing for the other team, leaving Sophia utterly perplexed.

The sudden change in Alexander’s mood bewildered her. The confusion and frustration gnawed at her, making her wonder if there was more to this tangled web of relationships than met the eye.

Yet, amid the chaos of emotions, Sophia couldn’t ignore the suspicious behavior emanating not just from Alexander but also from Kyle. Evelyn had discovered that Kyle had played a crucial role in saving her, yet he was angry about it.

“Everyone’s acting weird, huh?” Sophia muttered more to herself than Evelyn.

Evelyn nodded, her eyes clouded with frustration. “These men. They make us so angry that…” She let out a sigh, her thoughts trailing off. “But Kyle is not only secretive, he’s also awesome, Sophia.”

Sophia raised an eyebrow, intrigued. ” Awesome? Even after all this drama?”

Evelyn grinned, her eyes lighting up with a kind of love that Sophia couldn’t ignore. “I know, I know. He can be infuriating, but there’s something about him. I believe we’re meant to be together.”

Sophia leaned back in her seat, absorbing the complexity of Evelyn’s emotions. “You really think so?”

Evelyn’s gaze grew distant, lost in the maze of her thoughts. “I do. I love him, Sophia. But why does he keep his life such a secret? I couldn’t even find out about his family.”

Sophia couldn’t help but feel a twinge of concern for her friend. “His family, huh? That’s a pretty big gap in the information department. What do you know about them?”

Evelyn sighed, her eyes searching for answers. “I know he has a cousin in Las Vegas. An Italian-American who owns a casino. That’s all I could dig up.”

Sophia arched an eyebrow, her mind already connecting the dots. “Las Vegas, huh? Don’t tell me we’re going there to…”

Evelyn nodded with a mischievous glint in her eyes. “Oh, you bet. I’ve decided to head there and uncover the mystery myself.”

“So, let me get this straight. We’re going to Las Vegas, the land of excess and extravagance, to find an Italian – American guy who supposedly owns a casino in this gigantic city. Sounds like we’re on a mission impossible, Ev.”

Evelyn, undeterred by the skepticism, flashed a determined smile. “Oh, come on, Sophia! We’re a dynamic duo. We’ll just stroll down the Strip and ask every guy with an Italian accent if they own a casino. How hard could it be?”

Sophia raised an eyebrow, her disbelief evident. “You do realize how huge Vegas is, right? We might need a lifetime for that stroll.”

Evelyn shrugged, still upbeat. “Details, details. We’ll figure it out once we’re there.”

Sophia couldn’t help but shake her head, thinking Evelyn was on the verge of love craziness. “You, my dear friend, are absolutely nuts. But you know what? I’m in. Let’s embark on this wild goose chase together.”

Evelyn beamed, appreciating Sophia’s willingness to dive into yet another unpredictable adventure. “I promise you, Sophia, this trip will be unforgettable. Who knows what kind of eccentric characters we’ll run into in the city of dreams?”

Sophia chuckled, already anticipating the absurdity that awaited them. ” Unforgettable, huh? Well, let’s hope it’s for the right reasons. Lead the way, Detective Evelyn. I’m ready for our Vegas escapade!”

Chapter 119

“Megan’s Eating It Up, Hook, Line, and Sinker.”

In the swanky conference room at Enlighten Press Alexander, Kyle, and Megan gathered around the polished table, notebooks, and documents scattered everywhere. Leland, Megan’s father, sat at the head of the table, eyeing the trio with a scrutinizing gaze.

Megan, eager to kick off the meeting, flashed a confident smile and started explaining her grand plan of collaborating with Stone Enterprise. She went on about synergies, and market expansion that made some board members nod in agreement, while others exchanged skeptical glances.

Leland, with his bushy eyebrows knitted, interrupted, “Hold on a minute, Megan. Are you sure this collaboration is the right move? Stone Enterprise has its own set of controversies. We don’t want to get tangled up in some corporate mess.”

Megan bit her lip, momentarily taken aback by her father’s skepticism. It was clear that this wasn’t the smooth ride she expected.

Alexander leaned back in his chair and chimed in, “Mr. Leland, I understand your concerns, but I assure you, this collaboration is a game-changer. Stone Enterprise is on the upswing, and this partnership will benefit Enlighten Press immensely. Trust me, I’ve done my homework.”

Leland squinted at Alexander, his skepticism lingering. “Homework, huh? I hope you’re not leading my daughter into uncharted waters, Alexander.”

Alexander smirked, “I only lead in the right direction, Mr. Leland. This collaboration will elevate Enlighten Press to new heights. You’ll see.”

Megan, grateful for Alexander’s support, jumped in, “Dad, please. Alexander’s got this. It’s a win-win for us, and he’s been a crucial part of making this happen.”

Leland studied Alexander for a moment, then sighed, “Alright, but I’m keeping a close eye on this. If anything goes south, you’ll be answering to me, Alexander.”

Alexander nodded, acknowledging the unspoken challenge. “Fair enough, Mr. Leland. I’m confident this collaboration will exceed your expectations.”

As the meeting progressed, Leland, couldn’t resist questioning the details. ” And how exactly do you plan to handle Stone Enterprise’s controversies, Alexander?”

Alexander was prepared to address the concern head-on. “Mr. Leland, every company has its skeletons. What matters is how we leverage this collaboration to create a positive narrative. We’ll navigate those waters carefully, ensuring Enlighten Press only comes out stronger. Of course, in order for me to be successful, you must be as transparent as possible with me. I don’t want any surprises and I will expect your cooperation. To maneuver around the trouble spots, I must first be aware of what they are.”

Leland raised an eyebrow, partially convinced. “You realize that you are asking a lot of me by asking for such information, Alexander. My daughter’s future is on the line here.”

Alexander smiled, displaying a sincerity that wasn’t lost on Leland. “I understand, Mr. Leland. Megan’s success is my success. We’re in this together. I think with my proposal of marriage you may be sure of my intentions.”

The meeting continued with more discussions and plans for the collaboration. As they delved into the details, Alexander’s strategic prowess shone through, earning him Megan’s gratitude. She can’t stop smiling the whole meeting.

The conference room, once filled with doubt, gradually transformed into a space buzzing with the excitement of potential success, all thanks to the unexpected collaboration orchestrated by Alexander and supported by the dynamic trio – Alexander, Kyle, and Megan.

*

When the meeting was over Megan was eager to follow her father to find out what he thought about the matter. This allowed Kyle and Alexander to remain alone.

Kyle, wearing a wry smile, couldn’t resist a bit of teasing.

“Alexander, my man, that performance with Megan was top-notch. You’ve got everyone convinced you’re head over heels for her. Bravo!” Kyle’s tone dripped with playful sarcasm.

“You know how it is, Kyle. Gotta play the part. We’re putting on a show, after all.” Alexander replies.

Kyle laughed, slapping Alexander on the back. “Exactly! And what a show it is. Megan’s eating it up, hook, line, and sinker. But seriously, do you ever get tired of being the charming hero?”

A flicker of hurt passed across Alexander’s eyes, but he masked it with a smile. He understood that Kyle’s hint was directly related to the time he helped Sophia in London. He didn’t want to seem like he was doing it for every woman he found interesting. He was doing all this for Sophia because he loved her and wanted her to succeed.

“It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it. And I’ve got a reputation to uphold.” retorted Alexander calmly at the biting remark.

Kyle leaned in, lowering his voice for effect. “Speaking of reputations, how’s your standing with Sophia these days? Last I heard, she’s not your biggest fan.

This time, Alexander’s smile wavered a bit, the mention of Sophia hitting closer to home. “The important thing is that Sophia gets the information she needs, and then we’ll see.”

Kyle nodded, noticing the subtle shift in Alexander’s demeanor. “Ah, the game of relationships. It’s like a soap opera, and you, my friend, are stealing the show.”

Alexander played along. “Well, someone’s got to keep things interesting. Now, what about you and Evelyn Grimms?”

Chapter 120

“Besides, She Played the Sophia Card.”

At this point, Kyle’s smile fades.

“How did you…Alright, spill it, Alexander. How the hell did you know about me and Evelyn?” Kyle’s eyes narrowed with suspicion.

Alexander, leaning back in his chair, gave a nonchalant shrug. “Oh, you know, secrets have a way of floating around. Evelyn approached me recently, and had some questions about you.”

“About me? What kind of questions?” Kyle asked angrily. Alexander smirked. “The usual stuff. She wanted to dig into your mysterious side and find out what makes Kyle tick. I figured, why not help a friend?”

Kyle’s surprise was evident. “Evelyn approached you for info about me?

Since when are you two buddy-buddy?”

Alexander chuckled, taking a sip of his drink. “Buddy-buddy might be a stretch, but we’re not exactly enemies. Besides, she played the Sophia card.”

“The Sophia card?” Kyle raised an eyebrow. “What does that even mean?”

Alexander leaned in, his voice lowered. “She told me that if I didn’t tell her something that would work for her, she would say terrible things about me to Sophia, and right now, as you know, Sophia and I are not on the best of terms. I didn’t need another one to complicate the situation.”

Kyle’s eyes widened. “And you just spilled everything about…?”

Alexander chuckled. “Well, you did advise me once to ‘build a good rapport with people in her circle.’ Seemed like a good opportunity to follow your advice.

Kyle shook his head, disbelief written on his face. “I never meant you should tell everything about my life, especially to Evelyn.”

Alexander leaned back, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Details, details. Besides, I didn’t spill any of your dark secrets, if that’s what you’re worried about. I just said you were the one who saved her. Now you are a hero. I said nothing more, and that seemed to be enough for her.”

Kyle, still trying to process the unexpected turn of events, muttered, So you were the one who told her this. You shouldn’t have now she is more curious than ever.”

Alexander raised an eyebrow. “Well, Kyle, maybe is time for you to tell her who you really is.”

“Alright, Alexander, enough about the soap opera drama. Let’s talk about the real deal,” Kyle said, getting straight to the point.

Alexander nodded, his expression serious. “Hit me with it. What’s going on with the plan?”

Kyle sighed, running a hand through his hair. “It’s not going as smoothly as we thought. Megan’s proving to be more cautious than I anticipated. Getting access to the core secrets of the company is turning out to be a bit tricky.”

Alexander leaned in, the gravity of the situation reflected in his eyes. “What’s causing the hiccup?”

Kyle glanced around, ensuring their conversation remained private. “She’s just being more vigilant, digging her heels in. I haven’t found the right angle to get close enough to the juicy stuff.”

Alexander rubbed his temples, contemplating their next move. “We can’t rush this, Kyle. Patience is key. We need to find a way to get Megan to trust you more, maybe even confide in you. It’s the only way you’ll get access to what we need.”

“I know, I know. But time is of the essence. The longer this drags on, the more risk we’re exposed to.”

Alexander shook his head. “Look, Kyle, we knew this wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. Megan’s no pushover. We have to play the long game, gain her trust, and then strike when the time is right.”

*

In the expansive office of Leland, the walls adorned with framed accolades and family portraits, the atmosphere crackled with tension as Megan and her father found themselves in the midst of a fervent discussion.

Leland’s words were laced with caution as he spoke, “Megan, you need to be careful with Alexander.”

Megan rolled her eyes, dismissing her father’s concerns. “Dad, you’re being paranoid. Alexander and I are collaborating for the benefit of the business. It’s a strategic move.”

Leland, however, wasn’t easily swayed. “Strategic move or not, Megan, he’s a shrewd businessman. Don’t let your guard down. He might have his own agenda.”

Megan leaned forward, frustration evident in her voice. “Dad, you’re always so skeptical. Alexander has been nothing but professional in our dealings. This collaboration could elevate our industry standing.”

Leland, unyielding, shot her a stern look. “Naivety won’t get you far in the business world, Megan. You need to see beyond the surface. Alexander may seem charming, but there’s more to him than meets the eye.”

Megan, growing defensive, retorted, ” You never give anyone a chance, Dad. Always assuming the worst. I know what I’m doing, and I can handle myself.”

Leland’s tone turned harsh as he belittled Megan, “Handle yourself? Megan, you need to wake up. You’ll never measure up to your brother, and you’ll never inherit the industry. You’re too trusting, too soft.”

The room fell into a heavy silence as the weight of Leland’s words lingered. Megan, torn between defiance and hurt, clenched her fists.

*
