After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 51
#51 “I Can’t Imagine Being With Anyone Else.”
Collecting herself, Sophia took a deep breath, her voice steady as she responded to him.
“I see that you have solved the puzzle,” Sophia smiles at him, but the smile does not reach her eyes. “It doesn’t change anything, Alexander. You didn’t visit me once in these three years and now you pretend that there was something between us. There is nothing to fix because there was never a real connection.”
Alexander sighed deeply, acutely aware of the gravity of the situation. “I know I was wrong, Sophia,” he began cautiously.
Sophia’s voice turned cold and distant. “You were not wrong, Alexander; you made a decision. Your decision is that you don’t want to know me or have anything to do with me. I accept it.”
“Sophia, that was before I knew you,’ Alexander pleaded, desperation creeping into his voice.
She let out a bitter laugh. “There were three long years in which I sat alone, waiting for you to get to know me. It’s late now. I suggest that the divorce, which was your idea, means that you don’t want to communicate, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
“I know I can’t change the past, but I can change the future. I want to make things right. Sophia, I didn’t even know your name or who you were all these years, and not that it justifies me, but…
Sophia interrupted him with a cutting remark. “You’re right; it doesn’t excuse you. Just like the fact that you now know who I am, and suddenly I’m useful to you, right?”
“What?” Alexander asked, stunned by her accusation.
“You heard me very well,” Sophia continued. “I remember what Emily said to me on the phone the day of our divorce. When, once again, I wanted to talk with you. She said, ‘For being a useless ex-wife, he has given you enough. What more do you want?’ And now you know that I am Sophia Johnson, a famous lawyer you want me back.”
“It’s not about that at all,” Alexander protested, his surprise evident on his face.
“You said it yourself,” Sophia countered sharply, her tone biting. You didn’t know who I was; you thought I was from a poor family, didn’t you? That I clung to you like a leech because I’m incapable of making money. This is where you are wrong, Alexander. I was able to help you in your work, to be your equal partner, and you stuck me in that villa and left me to rot there.”
“God, Sophia, I’ve never seen things like this; that’s what I want to talk about. To be clear, I obviously offended you. I never thought you were a leech,” Alexander insisted. Sophia wasn’t willing to let him off the hook that easily.
“Stop the circus, Alexander. Men like you are clear to me. For you, only work is important, and nothing else. You want to own, destroy competitors, and win new benefits. You’re a money machine. You will go through everyone and everything to get your way.”
Alexander was left stunned by her harsh words, unsure of how to react. He stared at her for a long moment, torn between feeling offended, hurt, and a strange sense of disbelief.
“Obviously, you haven’t gotten to know me at all until now, Sophia,” he finally responded, his voice measured.
“If I wanted power, would I have helped you all this time? And why on earth should I bother trying to make you like me if I was just going to use you for my own purposes? You’re a lawyer; if I need your services, I’ll pay. It’s another matter that I got to know and like you, and I want to improve this disgusting impression I’ve left on you.”
Sophia was already too furious to continue listening to him. “This is where our paths diverge, Alexander. Get another lawyer and don’t look for me for anything,” she declared, her tone final.
As Sophia turned to leave, Alexander grabbed her arm, desperation in his eyes. “What about the kiss, Sophia?” he asked.
“Mistake,” she snapped back, her anger undiminished. “Mistakes don’t make you moan,” Alexander retorted before finally letting her go.
Sophia turned her back on him, walking towards her friend Evelyn. She hoped he didn’t see her face flush at the memory of their passionate kiss.
*
As the hours ticked by, Alexander found himself lost in the depths of the nearest bar, where whiskey flowed freely and regrets ran deep. The bartender’s concerned glances didn’t register as he continued to order glass after glass, each sip failing to wash away the weight of Sophia’s words.
Sophia’s accusation hung heavy in his mind. She believed he was a monster, and, in his moments of solitude at the bar, he couldn’t help but agree with her. How could he not?
He had been absent throughout their marriage, failing in his role as a husband in every conceivable way. The guilt weighed on him, gnawing at his conscience like a relentless storm.
Yet, there was a cruel irony in their stubbornness. Sophia called him obstinate, but the truth was that they shared this trait in equal measure. It was one of the things he had always admired about her—the passion she exuded, her relentless pursuit of justice, and her unwavering character.
As Alexander nursed his whiskey and his thoughts, he was startled when he heard a familiar voice calling out to him. Kyle approached, concern etched on his face as he noticed Alexander’s disheveled appearance.
“Alex. my man.” Kyle said with genuine worry, taking a seat beside him. “You don’t look so good. What’s going on?”
Alexander sighed heavily, his head pounding from both the alcohol and the emotional turmoil. “It’s Sophia, Kyle. We had a… conversation. Things didn’t go well.”
Kyle nodded in understanding. “I’m really sorry to hear that. But you know, there are plenty of other women in this city. You don’t have to fixate on your ex -wife. You can find someone new.”
Alexander ran a hand through his hair, his frustration evident. “Kyle, Sophia is the only one I want. I can’t just forget about her and move on. I can’t imagine being with anyone else.”
Kyle regarded his friend with sympathy but also practicality. “I get it, man. Love can be a real mess sometimes. But sometimes, when things break, they’re meant to be left that way. You can’t force something that’s not meant to be.
Alexander pondered Kyle’s words for a moment, his thoughts heavy with the weight of his feelings for Sophia. Then, Kyle brought up another matter.
“So, about that media group investigation, you’ve been working on… Do you still want me to send that information to Sophia?” Kyle asked.
Alexander hesitated, torn between his desire to protect Sophia from potential harm and his need to maintain some connection with her. After a moment of contemplation, he made a decision.
“Send it to her, Kyle,” Alexander replied, his voice resigned. “But send it anonymously to her email address. I don’t want her to know it’s coming from me.”

#52 “Do You Like Him?”
In the evening, Sophia and Evelyn burst into fits of laughter during the movie marathon they had meticulously organized. Sophia couldn’t help but realize that she hadn’t enjoyed herself this much in a long time.
They had expertly mixed up some delightful Sex on the Beach cocktails and decided to engage in a game of truth or dare. After all, the entire evening was meant to be a nostalgic trip down memory lane, reminiscent of their teenage years.
As they lounged on the comfortable sofa, clinking their glasses together, Evelyn turned to Sophia with a sly grin. “What do you choose?” she inquired, taking a delicate sip of her fruity cocktail. Sophia contemplated for a moment before replying, “True.”
Evelyn’s eyes gleamed mischievously as she leaned in closer, raising her eyebrows playfully. “What’s going on between you and Alexander?” she asked, the curiosity evident in her expression. Sophia, feeling a sudden wave of hesitation, furrowed her brow and changed her choice. “Dare.”
Evelyn’s grin widened. “I dare you to answer my question.”
Sophia couldn’t help but emit a theatrical growl of annoyance, flopping dramatically onto the soft cushions strewn across the floor. “It was supposed to be an evening without work and men,” she lamented.
“Come on, I’m your best friend,” she cajoled. “I should know. Do you like him?”
Sophia sighed dramatically, playing up the suspense. “Well, let’s just say he’s a complicated book, and I’m not sure if I want to keep reading it.”
Evelyn burst into laughter. “That’s the most diplomatic answer I’ve ever heard. Sophia winked. “Gotta keep you on your toes, Evie. Now, it’s your turn. Truth or dare?”
Before Evelyn could respond, Sophia’s laptop emitted a soft, distinct beep, signaling the arrival of a new email. Sophia’s reflex was to reach for her laptop, but she quickly caught herself, reminded by the ambiance of the evening that tonight was meant for relaxation and reminiscing, not work.
Evelyn encouraged her with a smile. ” Go on, check your message. I’m finished with my cocktail anyway. I’ll whip up a new one for myself.”
Sophia hesitated for a moment but eventually gave in to curiosity. She retrieved her laptop from the nearby table and opened the email, only to find it was from an anonymous sender.
The message contained intricate details about Enlighten Press, a newspaper under the umbrella of Horizon Media Holdings. Megan Sterling, a member of the Sterling family, was the CEO of Enlighten Press, and her family held ownership of Horizon Media Holdings as well.
Sophia’s eyes carefully traced the email’s contents, absorbing the intricacies of the challenge that lay ahead. Enlighten Press, nestled under the vast umbrella of Horizon Media Holdings, wasn’t just any newspaper; it held a significant stake in the media world.
The email detailed the intricate web of relationships, corporate structures, and potential obstacles she might encounter in any dealings with Enlighten Press. Megan Sterling’s reputation as a shrewd and formidable leader in the media industry was not to be underestimated. Sophia understood that the challenges ahead were significant, but she had never been one to back down from a daunting task.
As she continued to pore over the email, Sophia couldn’t help but let her mind wander to the anonymous sender. It was clear that Alexander hadn’t resigned himself to the idea of their relationship disintegrating without a fight. The information provided was not just a random act of goodwill; it was a calculated move aimed at drawing Sophia back.
Sophia’s determination to clear her name and seek justice remained unshaken, even in the face of the complicated situation with Enlighten Press. She knew she had to fight for what was right, no matter the cost.
Just as she was deep in thought, Evelyn walked in carrying drinks. Sophia looked up.
“Well, I choose dare,” Evelyn declared, placing the drinks on the table. Sophia couldn’t help but smile and closed her laptop. She would deal with it tomorrow.
On the next day, Sophia had planned to have lunch with Benjamin. They met at a cozy, dimly lit restaurant in the heart of the city, the soft jazz music in the background setting the mood for their conversation.
As they settled into their seats, sipping on glasses of red wine, Benjamin leaned in and mentioned a significant development.
“Sophia, I wanted to talk to you about something,” he began, his voice low and confidential. “Williams Bank is holding an asset auction in half a month, and I’m planning to acquire some valuable assets. I was wondering if you could help me review the relevant materials.”
Sophia nodded, her interest piqued. “Of course, Benjamin. I’d be happy to assist you with that.”
Their conversation then shifted to a topic that had been on Benjamin’s mind. “By the way, I took a look at the information about Enlighten Press that you sent me,” he said. “It seems like they’ve covered their tracks quite well. Seeking revenge against them might prove to be difficult.”
Sophia couldn’t help but feel a twinge of frustration at the mention of Enlighten Press. She had been working tirelessly to uncover the truth behind their actions, and the thought of them eluding justice irked her.
“Also, another interesting thing about them struck me,” Benjamin continued. “As of today, Horizon Media Holdings’ shares are going down.”
Sophia’s eyes widened in surprise. ” What?”
“I assumed you didn’t know about it,” Benjamin remarked. “From when we found out they are behind the scandal with you, their company has suffered some serious blows.”
Sophia’s mind raced, connecting the dots. It all made sense now. Alexander’s involvement in dismantling the reputation of Horizon Media Holdings seemed apparent, and it left her conflicted.
She had repeatedly told him she could handle her own battles, and yet, he continued to interfere in her life.
“Thanks for telling me, Benjamin,” Sophia replied thoughtfully, her gaze distant as she processed this new information. “I’ll see what I’ll do with this information.”
With that, they shifted their conversation back to more casual topics. Soon after the lunch, Sophia returned to her office, her thoughts still consumed by the recent revelations about Horizon Media Holdings.
As she entered, she found Michael waiting for her. It had been a while since they had seen each other, not since the incident at the police station.
“Hello, dear Sophia,” and offered a friendly smile. Sophia reciprocated with a smile of her own. “I haven’t seen you in a long time, she replied, her tone friendly and welcoming. “How are you?”
Michael’s initial warm smile faded into a darker expression as he responded to Sophia’s inquiry about his well-being.
“I’m sorry we haven’t met since the police station; I’ve had so many problems on my mind,”
Sophia furrowed her brow. “What problems?” she asked, genuinely curious. Michael’s tone turned somber as he explained, “Alexander didn’t stop meddling in my business. He’s trying to appropriate it.”
Sophia’s eyes widened in astonishment. The revelation that Alexander was actively targeting Michael’s business left her taken aback.
“Are you sure?” Sophia asked suspiciously. Michael nodded, “Yes, that’s why I didn’t have time to come see you. The constant attacks from his side left me no time even to sleep.”
Sophia fell silent, her thoughts churning. It all seemed so strange to her. While she didn’t doubt Michael’s sincerity, the notion of Alexander targeting his own half-brother’s business was perplexing.
Alexander did not act like that. True, he had a lot of power and that was within his means, but if he wanted to take Michael’s business, he would have done it a long time ago. Why now, Sophia wondered.
Then, Michael broached another topic, his gaze locked onto hers. “I also wanted to ask you something else,” he began. “Is it true that you are Alexander’s ex-wife?”
After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 53
#53 “One Date, and Nothing More.”
Sophia, sitting behind her desk, was surprised by Michael’s direct question about her divorce with Alexander. She wondered where he could have obtained this information, as it seemed that lately, there was a growing interest in her past relationship.
“Yes,” she replied calmly, not one to hide the truth about her failed marriage. However, the curiosity of those around her regarding her history with Alexander left her somewhat perplexed.
Michael settled into the chair across from her desk. “If it’s not too cheeky of me to ask,” he began, “why did you two break up?”
Sophia leaned back in her chair, her expression thoughtful. “He had so many women around him,” she explained with a hint of resignation.”
He was too busy with them to care about me.” Michael raised an eyebrow, his perspective on the situation slowly evolving. “You know,” he said slowly, from what I’ve seen, Alexander actually likes you. If he didn’t like you, he wouldn’t go to such lengths to keep me away from you, even trying to take away my business.”
Sophia sighed. “We were married for three years and never even met,” she admitted. “In the beginning, he didn’t even know who I was. It was only later, when he became interested in me.
Michael absorbed this revelation, a sense of clarity beginning to emerge. So, he didn’t even know who you were at the start of your marriage,” he mused.
“Exactly, but it’s too late now,” Sophia replied, her tone tinged with a sense of finality.
“I can’t believe Alexander treated you. like that,” Michael expressed. Sophia’s response was tinged with at sense of indifference as she replied, “It was his choice.”
Michael couldn’t help but smile slightly at her response. He found it intriguing how their conversation had taken this turn, and he couldn’t deny that he relished Alexander’s apparent failures.
“And you decided to end your relationship?” Michael inquired further, probing for more details. “He decided to divorce me,” Sophia clarified matter-of-factly.
Michael couldn’t contain his laughter, finding the irony of the situation rather amusing. He imagined Alexander’s face when he realized that his ex-wife was, in fact, the gorgeous Sophia Johnson.
“Alexander always made stupid mistakes. But this is probably his biggest,” Michael commented.
“It’s all in the past now,” Sophia replied. Michael, however, seemed to find amusement in the situation. “I’m sure he’s pulling his hair out of anger right now, ,” he remarked, chuckling. “But I have no doubt that he’s eager to have you back.”
Sophia sensed that Michael was treading on a sensitive subject, one she wasn’t inclined to discuss at length. So, she decided to shift the conversation’s focus.
She couldn’t help but wonder why Michael was so intrigued by her past with Alexander and she decided to address his curiosity directly. “Why are you so intrigued, Michael?”
Michael leaned in slightly, his charming smile never leaving his face.” Well,” he began, his voice low and conspiratorial, “let’s just say you’re not indifferent to me, dear Sophia. In fact, I’d suggest going on a date, not only because you’re gorgeous, but also because I’m guessing you wouldn’t mind if we pissed Alexander off a little.”
Sophia shook her head. “I understand that you two have some drama,” she began, “but it’s one thing to make Alexander angry, it’s quite another to go out on a date, Michael.”
Michael’s smile remained undeterred.” Oh, come on,” he teased. “It’ll be fun.”
Sophia, however, was resolute. “Don’t involve me in your war with Alexander, Michael,” she stated firmly. “I also have no intention of committing to anyone soon.”
Michael chuckled, taking her response in stride. “No one says we have to start anything serious. Let’s try it and see where it takes us,” he suggested with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“Michael, I don’t think that…”
As Sophia began to voice her hesitation, Michael abruptly got up from his chair and perched himself on the desk in front of her, effectively closing the distance between them.
“I don’t want you to think, I want you to go with the flow and see what comes out, Sophy,” he said with a certain assertiveness. Sophia didn’t have a chance to respond before he pressed further.
“You don’t still have feelings for your ex, do you?” Michael inquired, not one to back down easily. Sophia quickly clarified, “No, it’s not that.”
Michael continued to probe. “So, you don’t think I’m right for you?”
Sophia couldn’t help but chuckle at his straightforwardness. “God, you should have become a lawyer,” she teased, ” you sure know how to put pressure on someone.”
Michael, undeterred, responded with a smug smile. “If you go out on a date with me, I’d apply it to you, but you’ll surely like it this time.”
Sophia found herself in an unusual position, not accustomed to someone being so upfront with her. Just as she was about to object once more, Michael reached out and added another layer to their agreement.
“And you also owe me a date for the help I gave you against Emily,” he reminded her, his tone playful. Sophia recalled the promise she had made and relented. “Fine, one date, and nothing more,” she conceded.
Michael, pleased with the outcome, responded with a sly grin. “We’ll see. Maybe you will want a second one.”
Sophia rolled her eyes at him. Michael smoothly transitioned to a more professional topic, clearly satisfied that he had successfully persuaded Sophia to agree to a date.
“Speaking of Emily,” he began, “will you participate in the William’s family asset auction?” Sophia considered the question for a moment before responding, “No, I won’t be participating.”
Michael nodded in acknowledgment, and then he posed another question, What about helping me with the commission to review the related materials? As you know their business is not the cleanest in the world and legal issues can arise. I wish I had a strong ally like you to help me with them.”
Sophia, however, politely declined once again. “I appreciate the offer, Michael, but I’ve already committed to helping a friend with the same request.”
Michael accepted her decision with grace. “Understood. Well, in that case, I’ll handle it from here. See you at the auction, Sophia.”
Sophia watched as Michael exited her office with a simple yet confident declaration. “I’m looking forward to our date,” he said.
Alone in her office once more, Sophia leaned back in her chair and covered her face with her hands, feeling the weight of the various challenges and complications in her life pressing down on her like a relentless roller coaster ride. She let out a deep sigh, her mind racing with thoughts of the tasks and responsibilities ahead.
There was assisting Benjamin with the upcoming auction, being a pillar of support for Evelyn in her time of need, addressing the scandal caused by Enlighten Press, honoring her commitment to go on a date with Michael, and a plethora of other duties demanding her attention in her professional life.
As she contemplated the whirlwind of responsibilities that lay ahead, Sophia couldn’t help but fantasize about a well -deserved vacation.
After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 54
#54 “It’s Always Been A Game of Fire with You.”
Alexander had thrown himself into work to escape the constant thoughts of Sophia that haunted him. His typically composed and collected demeanor had given way to unusual irritability, causing his usually unflappable secretary, Laura, to tread carefully around him.
As he immersed himself in his work, Alexander found solace in the fact that his company continued to thrive. Business had always been a source of pleasure for him, but now, it served as a distraction from the void that Sophia’s absence had left in his life.
Laura, aware of her boss’s mood, knocked gently on his office door before entering. She hesitated to deliver the latest news.
“Mr. Stone, Enlighten Press’ stock has plummeted,” she reported, choosing her words carefully to avoid adding to his frustrations.
“Excellent,” Alexander responded with a hint of ruthless satisfaction. “I want you to keep a close watch on Michael’s company as well. Take every project he’s interested in, no matter the terms, ” he instructed, his voice sharp and commanding.
Laura acknowledged the orders with a nod and retreated to her desk, leaving Alexander alone with his thoughts. Alexander had fixated on Michael, recognizing the persistent attention he was paying to Sophia. As long as Michael continued to hover around her, Alexander had no intention of letting him off the hook.
His determination to protect Sophia, even though she had made it clear she wanted nothing to do with him, had transformed Alexander into someone unrecognizable. He had become snarky, vindictive, and impulsive, driven by an uncontrollable force he couldn’t resist.
The secretary’s voice interrupted Alexander’s thoughts once again. “Mr. Stone, Megan Sterling, the CEO of Enlighten Press, is calling.”
Alexander glanced at the phone, and after a brief moment of hesitation, he answered the call. “Megan.”
“Alex,” Megan purred, her voice smooth and seductive. “It’s been three long years, hasn’t it? How have you been?”
Alexander’s jaw clenched at the use of his nickname and the unmistakable charm in Megan’s tone. They hadn’t seen each other since his marriage, and he had no desire to revisit that past. ” I’ve been well. Megan.”
Megan, never one to shy away from her intentions, cut right to the chase. “I heard about today’s stock drop, Alex. And I suspect that you are behind it. Was that your doing?” Alexander didn’t mince words. “Yes, it was.”
There was a momentary pause on Megan’s end, and then she sighed. “If this is about our involvement in Emily’s scheme, I apologize. But I hope we don’t have to become enemies over it. It doesn’t directly affect you though, does it?”
Alexander knew Megan well enough to recognize the undercurrents of manipulation in her words. She was trying to play a game, and he wasn’t about to let her take the lead. “Apology accepted, Megan. But let’s be clear, I won’t hesitate to protect my interests.”
Megan’s laughter filled the line. “Oh, Alex, you always were a force to be reckoned with. I thought you and Emily were allies. I never thought you would have a problem.”
“We were, but that disgusting fake news in your yellow paper has nothing to do with me,” Alexander retorted firmly. Megan chose to sidestep his insult, instead focusing on the past tense he used when mentioning their association with Emily.
“I see that apparently you and Emily are no longer ‘friends’ like before. Then what kind of interests you are protecting?” she inquired, her tone laced with mockery.
“You’re making money off of bullshit, Megan,” Alexander interrupted. Megan pondered his accusation for a moment before breaking into a wry smile. “This teatro wouldn’t be because of that lawyer Johnson, would it? You don’t look like a law-abiding person, Alex.”
Alexander was growing more and more angry by the shift in the conversation. Megan had always approached their disagreements with scorn and mockery, but this was different. It was as if she was probing for something more.
“It’s not because of the lawyer,” he replied icily. “You make your money dishonestly by spreading fake news, concocting schemes, and it’s all come under my radar.”
Megan couldn’t resist a sarcastic jab. ‘ Oh, sorry, I didn’t know you’d become a police officer, Stone,” she chuckled. Alexander’s voice grew more threatening. “You’re playing with fire, Megan.”
“You always did, Alex,” Megan teased, a hint of their shared history in her words. “It’s always been a game of fire with you.”
“Be careful!” he cautioned. “You don’t want to provoke me further.” But Megan’s laughter echoed through the phone. “Alex, I’m just making a living the best way I know how. I apologize if it’s causing you trouble.”
Megan couldn’t shake the nagging suspicion that Sophia, the lawyer, was somehow involved in her ex- boyfriend’s recent behavior. Alexander had never caused her any trouble before.
Suddenly, he broke the alliance with Emily, with whom he had worked for years, and began attacking her for the fake scandal.
As she continued to mull over the situation, Megan decided to G****e Sophia’s name and peruse her photos online. She couldn’t deny that Sophia appeared to be an attractive woman.
The more Megan thought about it, the more she became convinced that Alexander wasn’t telling her the whole truth about Sophia. There was something amiss, and Megan didn’t like it one bit. It was as if there were layers to this situation that she had yet to uncover.
“You are not capable of causing me problems, rather you annoy me. I hope it doesn’t happen again,” Alexander’s voice growled through the receiver.
“Calm down Alex, you’re overexerting yourself.”
“Worry about yourself, not me.”
“I still don’t understand how I stepped on your tail,” Megan tried once more to provoke him into talking. “Your company is not involved.”
“I’m not going to explain myself to you Megan, take my words seriously and stop torturing your head with things you don’t understand.”
“Interesting, very interesting, Mr. Stone. Apparently, a person dear to you has fallen under the fire of a scandal, if I have gotten under your skin like that. Just wondering who it is?”
Alexander was infuriated by how guiltless Megan felt about what had happened. He was about to hang up on her. He had already warned Megan, that it was up to her to decide if he will continue to destroy her company.
He was about to press the red button when Megan’s voice stopped him. “Alex, I have a proposition for you.”
After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 55
#55 “I’m Not the One You should Be Apologizing to”
Alexander was silent, waiting for Megan to make her proposal, but she didn’t say a word either. “Speak up, I don’t have all day,” Alexander urged impatiently.
“I don’t like the way our conversation went, Alex. I offer to apologize to you personally. After all, we haven’t seen each other in three years,” Megan finally spoke, her tone almost hesitant.
Alexander had terminated his relationship with Megan shortly before he got married, not wanting to appear as a womanizer. Their relationship had never been particularly serious, mostly centered around s3x with no emotional attachments.
“I’m not the one you should be apologizing to, Megan,” Alexander interjected firmly. Megan felt a growing frustration, realizing that her suspicions about Sophia’s involvement were likely correct. She forced herself to sound cheerful.
“Of course, invite Sophia too; I want to clear the air between all of us. But you should know, Alex, my actions were purely business-driven. I was just looking out for my own interests,” Megan explained.
Alexander contemplated whether he could convince Sophia to attend this meeting, considering their last disastrous interaction. Megan’s nonchalant attitude about the situation grated on him, but he knew that addressing this issue face-to-face was likely the best course of action.
“Please Alex, you know I’m not a bad person. However, my business trips over these three years have taught me one thing, and that is to correct my mistakes.”
“Fine,” he conceded with a sigh, sensing that he might come to regret this decision.
“Excellent, I’ll send you the meeting details later,” Megan chirped with excitement. As Alexander hung up the phone, he couldn’t help but ponder the intriguing prospect of having his ex-girlfriend and ex-wife in the same room. It had all the makings of a potential disaster.
The meeting took place at the VIP bar on the top floor of a luxurious hotel, a place frequented by Alexander. As Megan arrived, she scanned the area but only found Alexander waiting at their designated spot. She couldn’t hide her curiosity.
“Where’s Sophia?” Megan inquired, her voice tinged with a hint of expectation. Alexander, however, didn’t look pleased as he responded, “She had some prior commitments, couldn’t make it.’
In truth, Alexander had been trying to reach Sophia on his phone, but all his attempts had been met with silence. He was growing increasingly irritated and couldn’t shake the suspicion that Sophia had intentionally blocked his calls and messages.
“Too bad, I couldn’t wait to meet her. She turns out to be a wonder woman,” Megan said. Alexander raised an eyebrow in mild confusion, uncertain about Megan’s intentions with this remark.
“Plays like a virtuoso, never loses a court case, looks like a goddess. I researched her, but when you work with journalists, you become one,” Megan continued, laughing lightly.
“That’s right,” Alexander replied with a flat tone, not giving away much of his thoughts. Politely, he pulled out Megan’s chair and gestured for her to sit at the table. It didn’t escape his notice that Megan seemed to have set up this meeting with more personal intentions than business. Her sparkling white dress with a revealing leg slit hinted at her intentions.
Megan then attempted to engage in conversation. “So tell me about yourself, Alex. I see you’re divorced.”
His response was brisk and to the point. “Yes, but besides that not much has changed.”
Megan frowned, her irritation becoming more evident. Alexander’s apparent disinterest bothered her, and it was clear he didn’t want to be there. She tried to shift the conversation towards business, mentioning the success of his company.
“That is not true, your company is at the top. When I left, you were just starting to grow it.”
“Well, yes, I’ve always been good at my work.” again he answered languidly. Megan’s frustration grew as Alexander continued to deflect her questions and maintain his cold demeanor. She couldn’t understand why he was so distant from her when they used to have a much more intimate relationship. This newfound restraint puzzled her.
Megan, determined to break through Alexander’s cold exterior, leaned in closer, her voice carrying a seductive undertone. “You know, Alex, it’s been a long time since we’ve been together. I thought maybe we could rekindle some of that old flame.”
Alexander, however, remained unmoved by her advances. “Megan, we both know that’s not why we’re here.”
“But I have already apologized to you, I propose to do so in another form as well.”
“I have no intention of playing with you. It’s a business meeting and I prefer not to take any risks and turn it into something else” he cut her off.
Megan leaned in even closer, her lips almost brushing against his ear as she whispered, “You used to love the thrill of taking risks, Alex. Remember how it felt?”
Alexander, though tempted by her proximity, remained stoic. “Megan, we’re not here to reminisce about the past.”
She pulled away slightly, a sultry smile playing on her lips. “Oh, come on, Alex. A little nostalgia never hurt anyone. Besides, it might be fun.”
His restraint held firm. “I’ve moved on from that phase of my life.”
Megan sighed in frustration, realizing that her attempts to rekindle their romantic past were falling flat. She decided to change the subject to something else that interested her.
“I couldn’t find you after my return, it wasn’t until the scandal with Emily that I came across you,” Megan admitted. “Why did you two stop working together?”
“I think that as the person who orchestrated the scandal, you shouldn’t be asking me that question. She crossed the line.”
“Maybe, but your families have been close for years,” Megan countered. “I didn’t expect that something could tear you two apart.”
“I had no idea what hideous deals they were involved in,” Alexander reiterated. Megan couldn’t help but suspect that Sophia Johnson played a significant role in this change. She decided to confront him directly.
“They definitely threw that lawyer of yours under the rails. Is that what pissed you off so much?” she prodded. Alexander responded tersely, ” Generally.”
Growing increasingly impatient, Megan decided to cut to the chase. She leaned in, her voice low and intent,” Okay, I’ll ask directly. What is your relationship with Sophia Johnson? I just can’t recognize you.”
Alexander’s jaw clenched, and he finally met Megan’s gaze. He wondered if he wanted to tell her the truth.

#56 “Why are You so Intrigued by My Ex-wife?”
“Megan, since you care so much, Sophia is my ex-wife,” Alexander finally replied. Megan nearly choked on the cocktail she was sipping.
“Everything is falling into place now, my dear Alex,” she laughed. “What amuses you so much?” he replied irritably.
“Oh, don’t be upset, I just solved your mystery. However, I did not expect that the great Alexander would throw away his friendship with Emily just like that. Apparently, this Sophia is a big deal.”
“Emily played her own cards by being sneaky, nothing to do with Sophia being my ex-wife.”
“And you’re telling me you don’t have feelings for her?” Megan tried again. Alexander was tired of sitting in the position of interrogation and decided to turn things around.
“What does it concern you if I have feelings for Sophia or not?”
“It just amazes me that you’ve always put business before relationships, and now it’s like the wheel has turned and everything’s the other way around.”
“I will repeat to you again that Emily’s actions are what made me end my relationship with her. Imagine that tomorrow I pissed her off with something, what’s the guarantee that she won’t play this trick on me?”
“You’d have to be terribly blind if you hadn’t noticed all these years that Emily had a schoolgirl crush on you.”
“That doesn’t mean her mom or dad won’t manipulate her into doing something stupid against me.”
“You’re right, she was easily influenced,” Megan finally judged. 11 Still, Alex, why did you divorce your wife?”
“I will ask you again, why are you so intrigued by my ex-wife?” he countered. “You don’t seem to be telling me the whole truth, but that’s up to you. She loses.”
Alexander laughed mockingly. He didn’t think Sophia was the loser in the turn of events; he was. But he would never admit that to Megan.
“Don’t laugh, you’re the perfect man,” she gently replied and placed her hand on Alexander’s. “Oh, and I don’t see her here tonight as well.”
“I already explained to you that she has another engagement,” he said and pulled his hand away from hers.
“That’s right, but I really wanted to make up. I don’t want her to be left with the impression that I did it with bad feelings towards her. But since she didn’t come to the invitation, it only shows how much she respects you.”
Megan was lying shamelessly, but she desperately hoped Alexander would give in and believe her. Her goal tonight was not to reconcile with Sophia but to draw Alexander back to her.
“You know, Alex,” Megan started again, her tone falsely sweet, “I really hope that someday Sophia will come to see that I didn’t mean any harm with what happened.”
Alexander sighed inwardly, growing weary of this conversation. “Megan, it’s not up to me to decide how she feels about the situation. People have their reasons, and she might never see it the way you do.”
Megan’s persistence was unwavering. ” I’d love to talk to her, apologize personally, and clear the air between us. I think we could even become friends.”
Alexander couldn’t help but feel that Megan was underestimating the complexity of the situation. “Well, you never know,” he replied with a hint of doubt. “She might not accept it, but if we ever have a chance to meet again, I’ll introduce you to her.”
Megan’s ego bristled at the idea that Sophia might not readily embrace her olive branch. “You really think she’d hesitate to be friends with me?”
Alexander managed a polite smile. “I’m sure she won’t mind.” he lied, but he was already tired of listening to this conversation.
As they talked, Megan became increasingly frustrated by Sophia’s absence. She had hoped that this meeting would be the perfect opportunity to make a strong impression on Alexander and perhaps even rekindle their connection. However, it seemed that Sophia was not going to make an appearance.
Finally, after a while, Megan decided it was time to make her exit. She couldn’t help but feel irritated. This was just the beginning of her plan to get closer to Alexander, and she wasn’t about to let Sophia stand in her way.
“I should get going, Alex,” Megan said, masking her disappointment with a gracious smile. “Tell Sophia that I genuinely wanted to meet her tonight. I hope she’s not holding any hard feelings.”
Alexander nodded politely. “I’ll be sure to pass on your message, Megan. Take care.”
As Megan left, someone tapped Alexander on the shoulder. Kyle, a fellow patron of the luxurious VIP bar, sidled up to Alexander, a wry grin playing on his lips.
The two had become friends over time, thanks to their frequent encounters in the bar and their occasional professional collaborations.
“Alex, you must be breaking records for getting over a heartbreak,” Kyle teased, a twinkle in his eye. Alexander chuckled, though there was a hint of bitterness in his response. “I don’t think I’m really doing well at all, Kyle.”
Curiosity piqued, Kyle leaned in, sensing there was more to the story. Come on, spill the beans. Then what was this hot babe against you?”
Alexander leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his hair. “Well, it’s actually a business meeting that Sophia didn’t attend, but was supposed to. My original plan was to have Sophia here tonight to talk to Megan in person. But she’s been avoiding me like the plague.”
Kyle raised an eyebrow, intrigued. ” Sophia’s a tough nut to crack, huh?”
Alexander nodded, his expression serious. “Extremely.”
Kyle leaned in, offering a piece of advice. “If you want to open Sophia’s heart, you don’t necessarily have to start with her directly. Sometimes it’s better to approach the people around her, and gain their trust first.”
Alexander considered the idea for a moment, his gaze drifting across the bar. He noticed a woman sitting by the window, her features vaguely familiar. It took him a moment to place her. It was Evelyn Grimms, one of Sophia’s close friends.
Kyle followed Alexander’s gaze and grinned. “See, there’s your chance. Build a good rapport with people in her circle, and she might just warm up to you.”
Alexander hesitated, his brows furrowing with uncertainty. “I’m not sure, Kyle. What if it backfires and worsens our relationship?”
With an encouraging pat on the shoulder, Kyle decided to take matters into his own hands. “Leave it to me, buddy. I’ll go chat up Evelyn and see if I can make some progress.”
He strolled over to where Evelyn was sitting, wearing a friendly smile. However, it didn’t take long for him to realize that she was not in the mood for a conversation. After a few polite words from Kyle, Evelyn simply ignored him and, with a curt nod, excused herself from the bar.
Kyle returned to Alexander’s side, a defeated expression on his face. “Well, it seems like Sophia and the people around her are not friendly at all.”
Alexander laughed bitterly. “What can I tell you, I wasn’t the most talkative husband either. Now it comes back to haunt me.”

#57 “His Ex-girlfriend will be Here.”
Sophia had been meticulously preparing for the auction of the assets belonging to the Williams family enterprise for the past half month. On the morning before the event, she sat in her living room, poring over the documents one last time.
Each document had been scrutinized in great detail, with Sophia assessing their history and the associated financial records. Her aim was to determine which assets carried a higher level of risk and which ones had a strong legal foundation that could withstand potential disputes in court.
Throughout this period, Sophia had engaged in lengthy discussions with Benjamin. They had dedicated numerous hours to analyzing their options and potential strategies. After careful consideration, they had honed in on three assets that stood out as the most promising investments.
These assets appeared to carry manageable risks while promising substantial profits over time. It was a calculated strategy, and Sophia felt confident in their choices.
She was delighted at the opportunity to assist her friend in partaking in the division of the Williams family’s wealth, all while observing with satisfaction the downfall of this corrupt family.
She donned a simple yet elegant white Chanel vintage skirt suit for the occasion. Just as she was about to call Benjamin to inform him of her readiness, the doorbell chimed throughout her apartment. Upon opening the door, she was greeted by Benjamin’s wide, enthusiastic smile.
“Just in time,” Sophia replied, returning the warm smile.
“I wouldn’t want us to be late for the auction. Are you ready?”
“Yes, just to grab my bag,” Sophia responded before quickly retreating into her apartment. After a few minutes, they both returned to the waiting Lincoln stretch limousine, ready to head to the auction. Sophia looked at Benjamin in astonishment. He just smiled at her and opened the door for her to enter.
“You really didn’t have to go all out with the limo. We could have driven in our own cars,” Sophia commented.
“But why not indulge a dear friend?” Benjamin replied with a playful grin. Sophia chuckled and shifted the conversation to a more crucial topic.
You remember well what we discussed, don’t you? It is important to stick to the assets we have commented on.” she inquired. “Of course, Sophia,” he laughs. “Why are you worrying?”
“Because I know you’re impulsive and if you like something, nothing can stop you,” Sophia noted. “That’s exactly why I called you, to hold me back when I falter,” Benjamin admitted, giving Sophia a grateful smile.
Before long, they arrived at the auction venue. Benjamin and Sophia found their seats among the growing crowd of attendees. The auction venue was opulent, with crystal chandeliers casting a soft glow over the room, and elegantly dressed guests chatting in hushed tones.
As they settled in, they continued their conversation about the assets up for auction. Sophia spoke, her voice a low murmur amid the ambient sounds of the room. “From what I see on the program they gave us at the entrance, it seems that we’ll start with the material possessions of the Williams family and then move gradually to the more valuable ones.”
Benjamin nodded in agreement, his gaze scanning the room for familiar faces. “Yes, that’s what it looks like. But keep in mind, Alexander is also in the competition. The best-case scenario for us would be to secure two or three of these asset packages we planned.”
Sophia furrowed her brows slightly. “I understand that, but how strong is our competition? Do you think we can outbid Alexander?”
Benjamin leaned in closer and replied in a confidential tone. “It’s hard to say at this point. Alexander is a formidable opponent, and he’s not afraid to go all- in for the assets he wants. We’ll have to be strategic and make our moves carefully.”
Their discussion was interrupted by a small commotion in the room as more guests arrived. Benjamin took the opportunity to bring up another attendee of note. “By the way, Sophia, I heard that Megan Sterling, the CEO of Enlighten Press, is also expected to be here today.”
Sophia raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. “Megan Sterling? Why would she be at an asset auction like this?”
Benjamin leaned in closer, his voice barely above a whisper. “Well, here’s the interesting part. Megan and Alexander used to be a couple back in college. They were considered the perfect match within their social circle. However, their relationship ended abruptly when Alexander was arranged to marry you.
Sophia found the situation rather amusing as she chuckled. Benjamin, curious about her reaction, inquired, ” What’s so interesting?”
She explained with a grin, “I think it’s funny that we’re at an auction to buy the assets of Alexander’s childhood friend, I’m his ex-wife, and his ex- girlfriend will be here.”
Benjamin joined in her laughter, and they shared a lighthearted moment. “I hadn’t thought about it. This is definitely an interesting event.”
While Sophia acknowledged the peculiarity of the situation, she didn’t feel particularly invested in Alexander’s private life. Her focus remained on the auction and helping Benjamin secure the assets they were interested in.
As their conversation concluded, Sophia’s attention was drawn to the entrance. She noticed the two figures Benjamin had mentioned, Alexander and Megan, walking in together. They made their way toward the row of seats where Sophia and Benjamin were seated.
Alexander and Megan exchanged pleasantries with Sophia and Benjamin. Alexander, with a polite smile, introduced Megan to both of them. ” Sophia, Benjamin, this is Megan Sterling, the CEO of Enlighten Press.”
Sophia nodded, acknowledging the introduction. “Nice to meet you, Megan.” Megan extended her hand with a friendly smile. “Likewise, Sophia. I’ve heard a lot about you.”
The atmosphere was cordial but tinged with an underlying tension, especially between Alexander and Benjamin, Their past history and the competitive nature of the auction seemed to cast a shadow over their interactions, despite the polite veneer they maintained. Especially since the last time when Alexander outbid Benjamin.
Sophia couldn’t help but find the situation ironic. She had a sneaking suspicion that Alexander had deliberately gotten close to Megan, just to annoy her, but deep down, she knew it was unlikely. Still, the coincidence was too much to ignore.
Megan couldn’t help but take a moment to observe Sophia. She had heard quite a bit about her, especially from Alexander, who had introduced her as his ex-wife. Megan had expected someone extraordinary, given the circumstances. However, her initial impression of Sophia was quite different.
Megan found Sophia undeniably pretty, but she didn’t strike her as someone extraordinary or particularly impressive.
When it came time to take their seats, Megan initially made a move to sit next to Sophia. However, Alexander subtly signaled for himself to take that spot, causing Megan to reluctantly move aside.
Benjamin, noticing the unspoken tension, leaned in and quietly suggested to Sophia, “Would you like to switch seats with me?”
Sophia considered it but decided against it. She didn’t want to create a scene or give in to any potential power plays. With a polite smile, she replied, No, it’s alright, Benjamin. I’m fine here.
Sophia realized that both individuals on either side of her were sitting unusually close, almost leaning against her. It felt uncomfortably intimate, and Sophia couldn’t shake the feeling that this scene was all too familiar.
On the other hand, Megan couldn’t help but notice Alexander’s subtle leaning towards Sophia, and it infuriated her. She had hoped to sit closer to him, and the proximity between Alexander and Sophia was making her increasingly uncomfortable. The tension in the air was palpable, and Megan was growing more frustrated by the minute.

#58 “It’s Time to Put on A Little Act.
As the auction began, the atmosphere in the room grew tense with anticipation. Bidders, investors, and business people filled the space, all eyeing the valuable assets up for grabs.
Sophia leaned toward Benjamin and softly asked, “The next two are fine to bid, but I remind you not to go above $ 500,000 because after that you will be at a loss.”
Benjamin’s eyes wandered over the event program, and he pointed to a 19th -century painting, a glint of interest in his eyes. “How about I give that 19th- century painting a try?” he suggested, contemplating the artwork.
Sophia playfully slapped his hand, giving him a mock stern look. “We agreed, no extra bids,” she scolded him.
This made them both laugh softly. Meanwhile, Alexander, sitting nearby, couldn’t help but overhear their conversation. Irritation flickered across his face as he noted Sophia’s warm interaction with Benjamin. She had never been so nice and welcoming to him and it was driving him crazy.
As the bidding progressed, Benjamin successfully secured a smaller asset package, prompting a satisfied smile from Sophia. The bidding for other assets intensified, with various participants vying for control.
Megan, seated a few rows away from Sophia, emerged as a strong contender in the auction. She managed to acquire two high-value asset packages, raising Sophia’s curiosity. Megan’s choices were all high-stake assets with potential legal complications, suggesting she had the confidence and skill to navigate the legal gray areas involved.
Sophia couldn’t help but observe Megan’s strategic moves. She leaned toward Benjamin once more and whispered, “Did you see that? Megan just snagged two significant assets with potential legal risks. She must have quite the legal team backing her.”
Benjamin nodded, impressed by Megan’s bold acquisitions. “You’re right, Sophia. But are you sure she is having that kind of support? You’re the best lawyer in town, and I doubt anyone else could justify the risk. I have a feeling her work isn’t that clean.”
As the auction continued, Sophia noticed that Alexander remained surprisingly passive during the first half, not bidding on any assets. She couldn’t help but wonder what his strategy might be, as it seemed unlikely that he would sit out the entire auction.
In the quiet moments between bids, she and Benjamin exchanged glances, silently acknowledging the unusual situation. Sophia’s focus was on the auction, but she couldn’t entirely ignore Alexander’s presence beside her. His subtle movements, his occasional whispers with Megan, and even the faint scent of his cologne seemed to linger in her awareness.
Feeling a mix of annoyance and curiosity, she tried her best to concentrate on the bidding process, determined not to let Alexander’s proximity distract her from their goal.
The auction went into a brief intermission, Alexander seized the opportunity to approach Sophia once more, with Megan at his side. They made their way towards her, their footsteps echoing in the grand hall. Sophia, who had been engaged in conversation with Benjamin about their future bids, looked up to see Alexander and Megan approaching.
“Hello, Sophia, I hope you can give me some of your time” Alexander began, “1 believe it’s time to clear the air. Megan genuinely wanted to apologize to you, Sophia. We tried to contact you half a month ago, but it seems we had no success.”
Sophia, keen on avoiding any further confrontation, decided to accept Megan’s apology gracefully. She offered a polite smile and said, “Thank you, Megan. Let’s really focus on the auction now.” With that, she gently backed away from them.
Megan, putting on her best act, extended her hand towards Sophia stopping her worm from moving away. “Absolutely, Sophia. I didn’t mean to hurt you personally, nor to offend you. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. If I can do something to get even, I’m ready. ”
Sophia accepted Megan’s handshake, but as their eyes locked for a moment, she couldn’t help but sense an underlying tension beneath Megan’s veneer of cordiality. Megan’s smile seemed forced, her gaze slightly too intense, leaving Sophia with an uneasy feeling.
Alexander, unaware of the subtle undercurrents between the two women, breathed a sigh of relief.
“No need, Megan,” Sophia replied. ” Let’s leave it in the past.”
As the second part of the auction was about to begin, all the attendees returned to their respective tables. Sophia was determined to maintain her focus on the proceedings, doing her best to ignore the presence of Alexander and Megan, who were seated on either side of her.
Despite her attempts to remain composed, something about Megan didn’t sit right with Sophia. It wasn’t just her bidding strategy, which had already raised some doubts, but also the lingering unease stemming from the scandal that Megan had orchestrated.
Sophia was aware that Megan had apologized to her, but that couldn’t erase all her actions up until now.
Megan on the other hand wasn’t done with her plan. She had come with a definite purpose, and she would not leave until she had fulfilled it.
She excused herself and left the table. Her assistant followed her without saying a word. Megan continued to howl until she reached a quiet corridor away from the ears of the others.
Megan and her assistant walked purposefully down the dimly lit corridor, their steps echoing softly in the empty space.
“What’s the plan, boss?” Megan’s assistant finally broke the silence. Megan turned to her, and outlined her plan, “We’re going to ensure that Sophia doesn’t return to the auction.”
The assistant raised an inquisitive eyebrow. “And how do you intend to do that?” A sly grin tugged at Megan’s lips. “Oh, Sarah, my dear. It’s time to put on a little act.”
Sarah, Megan’s assistant, nodded in understanding. “I’m all ears, boss. What’s the act?”
Megan leaned in closer, her voice a hushed whisper. “We’re going to orchestrate a little wardrobe malfunction for Sophia. Nothing too serious, just enough to keep her occupied and away from the auction for a while.”
Sarah’s eyes lit up with mischief. “I like it. How can I help?”
“I want you to spill something on top of her, apologize, and offer to help her clean her dress in the toilet. When you leave, lock her in the toilet just long enough to drop the auction, then you can let her go.”
“Consider it done,” her assistant replied with a wide smile. Megan and her assistant, Sarah, returned to the table. They settled back into their seats, and Sarah executed Megan’s plan with calculated precision. She feigned clumsiness, spilling a cup of coffee onto Sophia’s skirt. Sophia gasped in shock as the hot liquid splashed onto her clothes.
“Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry!” Sarah exclaimed, her voice filled with fake remorse. Sophia made an effort to collect herself, though her growing frustration was evident as her cherished Chanel vintage had been dirtied. “It’s fine, accidents happen,” she said, attempting to brush off the situation.
Sarah insisted on helping Sophia clean up in the restroom, and Sophia reluctantly agreed. As they left the table, Megan couldn’t hide her malicious satisfaction.
With Sophia and Sarah out of sight, Megan turned her attention to Benjamin and Alexander. “Gentlemen, I hope you’re ready for the second half of the auction. It’s about to get very interesting.”
Alexander raised an eyebrow suspiciously as Megan shared her cryptic remark. “Of course, that’s what we came for,” he replied, his voice laced with a touch of intrigue, and took a sip of his champagne. The bubbles tickled his palate, but his mind was focused on the upcoming auction.
Benjamin, on the other hand, seemed preoccupied. He looked around nervously for any sign of Sophia, his gaze darting between the tables filled with eager bidders. She was taking a lot of time with Megan’s assistant and he didn’t like that. The soft hum of conversations and the occasional clinking of glasses filled the air, creating an atmosphere of anticipation.
Megan’s mind churned with devious thoughts as she plotted to hinder her two competitors, Benjamin and Alexander, in the second half of the auction. She doesn’t mind throwing obstacles in their path, especially after the discomfort they have caused her. Megan had always been a vengeful woman, quick to seek revenge on anyone who crossed her or made her uncomfortable.
A wicked satisfaction simmered within her when Sophia left the table. She knew that this auction was more than just a business opportunity; it was a chance to settle scores and assert her dominance in the business world.
Much to Meghan’s terrible surprise Sophia returned to the table with a wide grin. It seemed that her initial plan to inconvenience Sophia had failed.
However, her focus quickly shifted to concern for her missing assistant. Megan’s anxiety began to rise as she noticed that her assistant had not returned with Sophia.
With a forced smile, Megan asked. “Oh Sophia, wasn’t my assistant with you?”
Internally, Megan was growing increasingly anxious. She could not afford to lose her assistant at this crucial moment in the auction. Worried, she began to scan the area, searching for someone who could go to the restroom and find her assistant.
“She was, but apparently, she needs more time to return,” Sophia replied, staring at her while sipping her champagne.
After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 59
#59 “Fifty Million.”
The second part of the auction had commenced, and a hushed anticipation filled the room as the auctioneer announced the next item up for bidding -a piece of land in the heart of the city, a cherished possession of the Williams family for over three decades.
This particular asset had been from those whom Sophia and Benjamin decided to bid for in the previous month. It was a truly magnificent piece of property, teeming with potential for various developments, from building structures to transforming it into a captivating attraction.
Sophia had meticulously researched this property, unearthing its history as an asset acquired during the early stages of the Williams family’s business ascent. It boasted a pristine record, having been purchased with duly declared profits from a prosperous year. Its documentation was immaculate, leaving no room for legal complications.
Furthermore, the property’s prime location in the bustling city center made it an irresistible prospect. The desirability was evident from the expressions on the faces of the participants, all vying for their chance to claim this golden opportunity.
The potential of this property was absolutely clear. With the right strategies for land use and consistent maintenance, it had the potential to see its value skyrocket, possibly increasing tenfold in the coming year.
When the bidding began at the starting price of $10 million, the room erupted with activity. Dozens of eager bidders raised their paddles, each one eager to claim this exceptional piece of real estate as their own.
Sophia’s gaze swept across the room, taking in the diverse array of participants in the auction. She noted the familiar faces of business tycoons, investors, and even some newcomers hoping to make their mark in the world of acquisitions.
Just as she was surveying the room, Sophia finally turned to Alexander, no matter that she was doing her best to ignore him, and saw that he himself was bidding. He had been relatively quiet during the early part of the auction, but now he seemed determined to enter the fray.
She leaned over to Benjamin and whispered discreetly, her voice filled with concern.
“Alexander joined in, be careful not to exceed the committed budget for this property,” she cautioned him.
Benjamin glanced at Sophia, his expression thoughtful, before turning his attention to Alexander, who was wearing a confident smile. The exchange of glances between the two rivals did not go unnoticed by Sophia. She understood the history between them and the competitive nature of their past dealings.
Sophia worried that Benjamin might be tempted to outbid Alexander, potentially exceeding their budget in the process. She knew her friend’s determination, and she also knew that Alexander had significant resources at his disposal.
As the auction for the city-center land escalated, the host’s voice filled the room again, raising the stakes.
Sophia and Benjamin exchanged a worried glance. They were approaching a dangerously tight budget, and the rapid increase in bids from Alexander was making them nervous. Alexander continued to raise the bids by hefty increments of five million, causing other participants to drop out one by one.
Even Megan, who had initially joined the bidding just for fun, had stopped participating and was now observing the proceedings with keen interest.
His eyes focused and determined, Alexander was in fierce competition with several other bidders. He leaned over to Benjamin, his voice filled with a touch of arrogance. “Benjamin, my friend, it seems this piece of land will be quite a prize. Are you ready to face defeat?”
Benjamin, equally determined, shot back with a sly grin, “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch, Alexander. I’ve been in tighter spots before.”
The two men continued to spar with their bids, each one trying to outmaneuver the other. Benjamin couldn’t resist the urge to make one last bold move. He shouted, ” Forty million!” Sophia, shocked by his sudden bid, immediately kicked him under the table.
Sophia sighed, realizing that her friend was pushing the limits of their budget. She gave him a stern look, silently urging him to reconsider.
“We agreed to stop at thirty-five,” she scolded him in a hushed tone.
Benjamin flashed her an apologetic smile but stood firm. Megan, sitting nearby, observed the intense rivalry between Alexander and Benjamin with a glint of amusement in her eyes. She couldn’t help but enjoy the spectacle of two powerful men vying for supremacy. Alexander, with a calculating expression, shot back, “Fifty million.”
The room was filled with gasps and murmurs of disbelief. Bidding had never escalated this quickly or dramatically before. Alexander was determined to claim this property.
Benjamin turned to Sophia, seeking her opinion, but she shook her head in disapproval. It was a bold move in her opinion for Benjamin to continue to race with Alexander.
Resigned to the situation, Benjamin reluctantly decided to withdraw from the intense bidding battle. He signaled to the auctioneer that he was out of the race, and all eyes turned back to Alexander.
The auctioneer’s gavel finally came down with a decisive thud, declaring Alexander as the winner of the city center property. The room erupted in applause and congratulatory remarks as he secured the valuable asset. Alexander, wearing a triumphant smile, turned to Benjamin. “Better luck next time, my friend.”
Benjamin chuckled, showing no signs of defeat. “Oh, this is far from over, Alexander. There are still plenty of opportunities out there.”
The auction continued with several more items, but none quite as intense as the city center property. Bidders came and went, each vying for their desired assets. Some found success, while others left empty-handed.
As the event drew to a close, the auctioneer announced the final item up for bidding. It was a rare piece of artwork, an exquisite painting that had been in the Williams family collection for generations.
After fierce competition, the painting was sold to a passionate art collector who had been eyeing it for years. With the final hammer strike, the auction came to an end. Attendees began to mingle, discussing their acquisitions and losses.
After the auction concluded, Megan, wearing a practiced smile, approached Sophia and extended her hand. ” Sophia, it was a pleasure to meet you,” she said with feigned warmth. “I hope we can be friends in the future.”
Sophia, not wanting to appear rude, returned the handshake with a polite smile. “Likewise, Megan,” she replied, her tone cordial.
The two looked at each other. Neither of them looked away. Their smiles were fixed in place, but beneath the surface, there was not a hint of genuine happiness.
As Megan walked away, Alexander couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. ” Why did you agree to be friends with her?” he asked Sophia curiously.
Sophia let out a sigh and leaned in closer to Alexander. “Revenge is not my top priority at the moment,” she said, her voice filled with a mysterious tone. “I would rather have her close to me, observe her every move. Always be prepared, isn’t it?”
Sophia’s desire for vengeance didn’t dissipate. However, to expose even the slightest crack in Megan’s facade, one had to penetrate the depths of her being, peering into the very essence of her character. Sophia was resolute in her conviction that drawing nearer to Megan was imperative, sensing a sinister motive lurking beneath Megan’s supposed innocence. However, there existed no compulsion for Sophia to lay bare every detail of her plan to Alexander.
Alexander nodded in understanding. You always think ahead, don’t you?”
Sophia chuckled. “It’s how I’ve survived in the world of business.”
“Sophia, can you give me some time now? I want to talk to you.” Alexander asked her. Sophia didn’t want to, but finally, she nodded and followed Alexander as they moved away from the bustling auction floor to a more private corner where they could have their conversation.

#60″I Accept Your Apology.”
Alexander invited Sophia to sit on the couch in a quieter part of the corridor. She obliged, taking a seat and turning her attention to him.
“I’m listening, Alexander,” Sophia said, her expression attentive, urging him to speak. Alexander sighed, his shoulders sagging slightly. “I wanted to apologize to you, Sophia. I feel like you’ve been keeping your distance from me, and I think I remain misunderstood in my intentions.”
“What are you talking about?”
He took a deep breath and began, “For everything about the Emily situation. I know it looked to you like I was taking matters into my own hands, but that’s not the whole truth.”
Sophia remained silent, allowing him to continue. She decided it was best to hear him out before passing judgment. Because she knew that if she opened her mouth they would fight again.
“Understand that I did what I thought was right, and I believe they faced consequences, albeit in a milder form. But I felt it was something I owed them. I also realize that your friend Evelyn suffered greatly, and if I had known, I would never have let it happen.”
Sophia couldn’t help but scold him, You should have let me handle the situation alone.”
Alexander nodded, acknowledging her point. “I’m sorry, Sophia. I did what I felt I had to do. I also want to apologize for our marriage as well,” he added.
Sophia stopped him firmly. “Enough, Alexander. We can’t change anything now. You made a decision, and now I make mine.”
He sighed, frustration evident in his voice. “I feel like you always misinterpret what I say when I talk to you.” Sophia’s response was stern. “I think your actions speak louder than words, Alexander.”
He fell silent, unsure of how to make her understand. Sophia remained resolute, unwilling to waver in her stance.
“I took no interest in you when I found out you were Sophia Johnson, the lawyer,” Alexander confessed, his voice filled with regret. “I showed interest when I got to know you as a person. My mistake was not coming to meet you while we were married.”
Sophia’s tone remained cool as she replied, “As I’ve already said, we can’t change the past.”
She observed the change in Alexander’s expression, his genuine remorse, and the hint of sadness that crossed his features. “But I understand what you’re saying,” she continued, “and I accept your apology.”
A small, genuine smile tugged at the corners of Alexander’s lips, and Sophia couldn’t help but notice how handsome he looked when he smiled.
She gently shook her head, as if to clear her mind, and decided to infuse a touch of humor into their conversation. ” Well, if you’re really determined to make me accept your apology, then I wouldn’t say no to the piece of land you just acquired today,” she teased playfully.
While she laughed, Alexander’s mind raced. He considered the implications of her words. Did she really want the land? Was she just teasing him?
He is feeling a bit like a confused dog, as Sophia’s laughter filled the air. There was something intriguing about her unpredictable nature, and he couldn’t deny the attraction he still felt towards her.
Alexander took a moment to collect his thoughts. “Well, if you want it, it’s yours,” he finally replied with a serious tone.
Sophia was taken aback by Alexander’s unexpected offer. Her playful remark had been meant in jest, and she certainly hadn’t anticipated him taking it seriously. The surprise was evident in her eyes as she looked at him.
“You’re serious?” she asked, her voice tinged with disbelief. She couldn’t fathom why he would willingly give up such a valuable asset, especially after the intense bidding war they had just witnessed. Alexander’s response was a stern nod.
“No, Alexander, I was just joking,” she said, her smile deepened. “I can’t accept the land. It was your hard- earned victory in the auction, and I wouldn’t take it from you.”
Alexander’s initial confusion had transformed into frustration. He felt like Sophia was mocking him with her jokes about the valuable land. His offer had been a genuine attempt to make amends, and he didn’t appreciate her dismissing it as a jest.
“No, Sophia,” he said firmly, his tone laced with irritation. “I’m serious about this. I won that land, but I want you to have it. Consider it a gesture of goodwill.”
“Alexander, I truly appreciate your offer, but I won’t accept the land,” she said, intrigued by Alexander’s earnest while frustrated reaction.
With a mischievous glint in her eyes, she couldn’t resist teasing him further. “Besides,” she continued, her eyes sparkling with delight, “if I were to accept it, I would transfer it to Evelyn as compensation for the pain she endured.” Her tone was flippant, but there was no room for further maneuver.
“Fine,” he finally conceded, his voice tinged with exasperation. “If that’s what you want, then so be it.”
Alexander’s frustration grew as he realized that Sophia was adamant about her decision. He had hoped to make amends, but it seemed his offer had only complicated matters further.
Sophia nodded, relieved that the issue was resolved, at least for now. She didn’t want their conversation to take a negative turn after they had managed to clear the air about some of their past misunderstandings.
Benjamin approached, his attention firmly fixed on Alexander. It was clear that their rivalry and competitive spirits were far from resolved.
“Sophia, shall we go?” Benjamin’s question was directed at her, but his gaze remained locked on Alexander.
Sophia nodded and responded, “Yes, of course,” her voice carrying a sense of finality. She grabbed her bag and coat, preparing to leave the venue.
Throughout this interaction, Alexander maintained his composure. He met Benjamin’s intense gaze without flinching. It was evident that he wasn’t fazed by the warning and threat conveyed by Benjamin’s unyielding stare.
As Sophia headed for the exit, the unresolved tension between Alexander and Benjamin lingered. Sophia and Benjamin exited the venue, the cool evening air greeted them. Benjamin couldn’t help but notice the upbeat mood in Sophia’s demeanor, and he decided to inquire about it.
“Sophia,” he began, “you seem to be in quite a good mood. Is there something I missed at the auction?”
Sophia smiled, her eyes reflecting a hint of amusement. “Oh, nothing special, Benjamin. We get what we planed so we can conclude it was a very productive day.”
“That’s right,” he replied. Benjamin couldn’t resist asking about her impression of Megan. “By the way what do you think of Megan Sterling?” he inquired. “I found her to be quite interesting’ and not so easy to deal with.”
Sophia nodded thoughtfully. “You’re not entirely wrong there, Benjamin. She’s not one to underestimate.”
Benjamin, treading carefully, ventured a comparison. “You know, Sophia, I couldn’t help but notice that she reminds me a bit of you, in a way. But of course, you’re in a league of your own.”
Sophia frowned at him. “Interesting observation,” she replied thoughtfully.
