Ch. 191..195: Alpha King’s Lost Luna Chapter 191-195
Chapter 191
As I studied the strange Northern King, I tried to ascertain if he was telling me the truth. His deep blue eyes remained fixed on me and maintained their gaze too steadily to be overtly suspicious, but how could I trust the man I’d found out was a villain?
But even though I wasn’t sure if what he said was credible, I remembered what Asher had once told me a while ago that Emmett Keller had been “abducted” after the death of his parents and then returned to Wild Crawler after many years.
But why would Emmett do that?
Since he was dead now, how could I confirm his story?
1 can see the doubt on your face,” Kaleb spoke up, and he leaned forward and folded his hands in his lap. “Both Yurene and Wegalla had lost track of the sorcerer’s family until ‘Emmett‘ visited Yurene one day. Upon arriving in my country, he revealed his identity as a sorcerer, though back then, he didn’t give us his name. Back then, my father was deeply ill with the mysterious illness. Emmett promised that he could cure him, but in return, he wanted my father to offer him some help.”
“What did he want?” I wondered as my eyebrows knitted together.
“He said he wanted revenge on Wegalla,” Kaleb replied in a solemn voice. “Revenge against the king who had killed the saviors of his family. The one who had forced all of the sorcerers to be chased or go into hiding just to survive.”
I frowned at this response. I didn’t believe that Emmett would be someone who had been planning on revenge. He had always been kind and warm–hearted, especially when it came to his patients.
But then again, I felt like despite all of our years together in Wild Crawler, I never understood him. I had never known who he was, what he had been through, or what he had wanted out of life: Those
conversations had never happened and Emmett had never offered me any information about his past. Our marriage was one of convenience, a way for me to survive after all I’d endured in Anemond.
“So, what happened?” I asked after a moment of pause.
“Well, my father rejected his idea of revenge,” he answered as he shook his head slowly. “He didn’t want to declare war against Wegalla, Yurene had already suffered a lot from the seemingly ever– lasting disputes. A war against the most powerful wolf empire would be devastating for our people. So, Emmett left and said he would give my father some time to reconsider.”
Kaleb took a moment to gather his thoughts before he continued on. “A few years later, after my father had died, I received a letter from Emmett. In the letter, Emmett said he had discovered something and wanted
an immediate word with me.”

Chapter 191 The first story
My eyebrow shot up. A letter?
“Of course, he never made it to the meeting because he was brutally killed in the forest,” the king of Yurene lamented with a soft sigh. “When I found his body, I took it back to Yurene and buried it there.”
My breath suddenly caught in my throat and my eyes instantly welled up with tears. So, that was why Wild Crawler had never uncovered Emmett’s corpse? Because the king of Yurene had been the one to find him?
We had all believed that a mob of rogue wolves had killed the innocent healer, but none of us suspected where his body was.
And all along, he was in the Northern country, buried far away where no one could see him.
I turned away so Kaleb couldn’t see my reaction. Just as I did, the tears streamed down my cheeks and my lips trembled as I began to quietly cry. Though Emmett had kept me at a distance, he’d been the one to save me from that dreadful inferno and heal me from my many injuries. Had it not been for his intervention, I would have died there in Rosepetal, and Finnick never would have been born.
I owed my life to Emmett.
He’d helped me assume a new identity and taught me all I knew about being a healer. Had it not been for him, I wouldn’t have learned how to heal people as he did for me.
As I wiped my face, I wanted to ask how Emmett was killed and why Kaleb had described his death as brutal, but I wasn’t sure if I was ready to hear the answer.
“Was it an accident?” I asked quietly.
“I don’t know,” Kaleb admitted, and when I turned around to face him, his expression was serious. “Whether it was an accident or a deliberate murder, the outcome was the same, Cassandra. Emmett Keller’s life was shrouded in shadows. He was hiding something, the letter suggested as much. Surely, he had to leave some clues about what he wanted to meet about.”
I shook my head. “If he did. I know nothing about it.”
“It’s better not to draw a conclusion so hastily.” Kaleb insisted. “Because if there’s a clue, it must be something that couldn’t easily be found. Emmett was from a family of sorcerers. He couldn’t risk
someone finding out his heritage. But his work, his intentions when it came to the illness, and whatever he had to tell me, I’m sure he left something behind.”
His eyebrows knitted together. “As I had always said, Cassandra, going to the North seemed to be the better choice for you in the long run. Not only would you thrive somewhere that isn’t as barbaric as Anemond, but if the secret was exposed, you would be the target for anyone who chased after the sorcerer’s power. Including the king of Wegalla.”
I frowned instantly.

Was Kaleb trying to drive a wedge between me and Asher? Was he trying to sneak doubt into
Even if his accusation had a drop of truth, I knew the Alpha King all too well. He didn’t covet power as his

father had. In fact, he’d mentioned wanting to leave the throne behind to build a life with me if that was what we wished. He didn’t care about magical powers or dark gifts.
He cared about Finnick and me more than anything.
I knew that for certain.
“You’re out of your mind if you think I would trust you better than my Alpha King.” I fired back at him. “That’s arrogant, even for you.”
Kaleb let out a cruel, mocking laugh and then a wicked smile formed across his full lips. “Is that so? This is only the first story, Cassandra.”
He picked his teacup up from the table and took a long sip before speaking again. “Now that I’ve completed that one, I wish to tell you the second one. I’m not sure if you would find this one as interesting, but personally, I find it to be quite entertaining.”
“Oh?” I asked, and I rolled my eyes at him. “You can certainly try, but I’m still not convinced that I believe you. Whatever other story you have, I’m not sure I’ll be further convinced.”
“Fine,” Kaleb remarked, and then his eyebrow raised. “Then I’ll just get on with it. Do you know anything about the Felix family?”
Chapter 192 The second story
CASSANDRA
At the mention of my family name, I clenched my palms around the arms of my chair until it hurt.
Felix.
My heart sank when I heard my true surname. My mind immediately flew to my father and brother, and as their images flashed through my memory, sorrow bloomed within me. I missed them more and more with each passing day, and the heartache haunted me in my dreams.
But despite the fear that plagued me in anticipation, I managed to stay calm. Luckily for me, Kaleb didn’t seem to notice my stiffness and the king of Yurene carried on in a disgustingly light tone.
“Well, in case you didn’t know much about the so–called loyal warrior family, I’ll tell you a little bit about them,” he began, and then he let out a small sigh. “The Felixes were rather famous for their loyalty to the King of Wegalla as well as their capability. It was said that the leader of the Felix clan was considered a ‘god of war” and the watchdog of Wegalla’s royal power. From what I’ve heard about Darrin and Ector Felix, they were quite strong.”
I remained silent when Kaleb was introducing this backstory I wanted to stop him but I couldn’t because I was afraid that if I opened my mouth, screaming and shrieking wou d tumble out. I
I wasn’t certain if the arrogant Northern king knew my true identity, but I assumed by his expression that he didn’t. The identities of my father and brother were spoken about too lightly to suggest he knew the truth, On the one hand, I hated it, but on the other, I realized it was the first time I’d heard my father and brother’s names after all of these years.
Asher and Erika did their best to avoid talking about anything relating to my past.
The way Kaleb described them was like he was talking about some heroic models, which was surprising. given their shift in reputation post–accusation.
But then, a moment later, Kaleb commented on the accusation, and I fought to not release a sigh.
“Do you believe that the Felixes wanted to kill the Betas?” he asked, and I was a little confused. Why would he ask a plain healer from a small Pack on the border what I thought when I was so far from the core of this incident?
Or at least Cassandra Keller was, of course.
“I don’t know much about it,” I replied, and I shrugged for good measure.
The king raised an eyebrow in surprise. “I figured it would have been breaking news back then. Even the residents of Yurene were discussing it at length.”

mean, I’d heard about it vaguely, but I didn’t know much of the details,” I tried to explain, and I made sure to keep my expression even.
Kaleb seemed satisfied by that answer and nodded his head thoughtfully. He ran a hand through his long golden–brown hair and then returned his attention to me.
*1 could understand that,” he remarked. “Wegalla seems to have buried this and prevented their citizens from speaking about it ever since the conviction was settled. But do you truly believe that Darrin Felix, the loyal man that he was, betrayed his country and the ruler he pledged his loyalty to?”
My voice caught in my throat as I fought to find an answer he would accept.
Why indeed would anyone doubt my father, who had devoted his entire life to the crown?
Finally, I shook my head. “I don’t know.”
Kaleb’s eyes narrowed and he released a sigh.
“But you did know,” he accused. “Everyone in Wegalla would have known, even Wild Crawler. It was a political game, obviously, but no one dared to question it. They all accepted what they had been told. I feel. deeply sorry for the Felixes. They were wrongfully accused and punished for no reason.
I didn’t want to continue this topic. It was too hard to hear about my family members, even if the Northern king seemed to regard them highly. I didn’t understand Kaleb’s angle and what he was trying to get at..
So, I remained silent and let him continue.
“It will always be like this,” he remarked thoughtfully, his tone underscored with a little irritation. “At the height of one’s power, they seem to get all of the good things, but when the power disappears… nothing is left and nobody is on their side.”
As much as I didn’t want to admit it, Kaleb’s words were hurtfully true. I remembered back in those days, after the accusation that tore my family apart, everyone shifted their opinions. My family had once been so revered, but the moment they were accused, it was as if we were nothing.
“I don’t understand why you’re telling me this,” I said with a slight sigh of my own: “I’m not interested in politics.”
Kaleb smiled. “Everyone is involved in politics, Cassandra, either consciously or subconsciously. Don’t you wonder about the truth behind the incident?”
“Do you?” I questioned, even though my breath wavered. “Or do you already know the truth?”
“Not the whole picture, but I know some interesting parts,” he remarked. “Interesting enough for you to decide if the great Alpha King of Wegalla is worth being so loyal to. The game, which everyone believed to be between the Beta and the Felixes was actually directed by the former Alpha King. He was the master of the puppets, and of course, it was his will to wipe out the warrior family. The Beta, fully submitting to his Alpha, was used as a pawn.”
I frowned, but when I heard what Kaleb said, I wasn’t as shocked as I thought I would be. It could very well
2.3
Chapter 192 The second story
be a lie, as Asher had mentioned that Kaleb had been visiting Oliver Moses for a couple of days recently.
But I had my doubts about the matter.
Kaleb might not believe what Oliver most likely told him during their visits to clear himself of guilt, but he surely thought it was a good enough story to coax an innocent healer like me.
It could be real. After all, my family had been convicted by the blind emperor. But I couldn’t think about that, not now. This story was a distraction that was meant to shift me to Kaleb’s side of this dispute.
“I don’t find this interesting at all,” I remarked with a bored inflection.
“You don’t?” Kaleb questioned, and he seemed rather amused. His deep blue eyes narrowed, and then he grinned. “Well, Cassandra, what if I told you the Alpha King of Wegalla wanted Darrin Felix to die
because he found out that he was obsessed with sorcery? Or more precisely, that the Alpha King wanted to use sorcery to become immortal?”
“What?” I blurted out before I could stop myself and my eyes widened. Quickly, I felt dazed. My vision was blurred and the image of Kaleb started to twist. I felt woozy and off–kilter, and I tried to push aside the feeling. but it was no use.
A wicked smile appeared on the Northern king’s face, and before I lost consciousness and fell into oblivion, I heard him utter something, but I couldn’t make sense of it.
Chapter 193 Far too late
KALEB
I leaned over to hold Cassandra’s shoulder as she lost consciousness and nearly fell from her chair. As I steadied the beautiful healer and swept her long, copper curls away from her lovely face, the smile disappeared from my face.
I had regarded this tale with amusement and thought Cassandra would do the same. I hadn’t expected her to pass out. I wasn’t sure if it was the stress of the matter or what, but her skin was pale and she sat limply
in my arms.
She remained breathing, though, so I wasn’t too terribly worried about her.
A few seconds later, Anubis stepped into the room without knocking. His lips twitched at the sight of me and the healer, and then his dark eyes flashed with amusement.
“Who knew you were so gentlemanly?” he stated with a cruel smirk, and then he walked across the room and took a seat in the chair opposite us.
“What do you want?” I uttered as I held her steady. Her chest rose and fell lightly as she breathed, and for a moment, my mind was fixated on making sure she was alright, though I knew logically, that she was just fine.
“I came to tell you that everyone will be ready to depart in an hour, Your Highness,” Anubis answered.
I nodded in response but said nothing.
“You’ve changed,” he continued as I pulled Cassandra closer to me. She had begun slipping and I didn’t want her to hurt herself in the process. “Though you’ve denied it, it’s clear as day. Of course, that isn’t a bad thing. Being soft is a good quality in a powerful king.”
I glared at him sharply as irritation swelled through me. “What do you mean?”
“I don’t understand why you’ve done all of this,” he remarked, and he pinched the bridge of his nose between his fingers. “Telling her a story, trying to appear as a good man to her, all of these things. What’s the point? You could have reached your goals much earlier if you hadn’t tried to play “soft“. And now, you see, the result is the same. You still have to force her to come with you.”
A huff rose up from my chest as irritation flashed through me. “I don’t see the point of what you’re saying. Anubis. Who cares how I handled things? I don’t recall asking you for your input.”
“It’s an important issue, Kaleb,” he pressed. “When I decided to serve you all those years ago, you were a soft man. If that’s what you’ve decided to become…. I might have to reconsider my affiliations.”
I stared at him coldly and debated reaching across the table and smacking him. “Are you speaking of
treason?”
Chapter 193 Far too late
Anubis gulped. “I was only trying to make a point. But I’m wondering why you’re treating this healer so differently from the others. Why do you want her to understand you so badly? Are you trying to earn her empathy?”
I shook my head instantly. “No. I’m not working some angle. I couldn’t care less. This was just a whim, Anubis. I only wanted to intimidate her.”
He didn’t seem convinced by my words and leaned forward.
“A whim?” he asked, and one of his dark eyebrows arched. “The Kaleb I know is not someone who would do anything on a whim. You’re calculated, prepared, and always ready for the next step forward. And if you wanted to intimate her, why didn’t you tell her that it was you who killed your father?”
I froze at his words and glanced down at Cassandra. Thankfully, she was still fast asleep, but had she been stirring even just a little, I would have ripped Anubis‘ throat out.
Despite my anger, he simply smirked. “You could also mention that it wasn’t just your father, but also your two brothers and sister-”
“That’s enough,” I hissed, and I could feel my face darken and my nostrils flare in anger. “You’ve spoken. enough. Leave us. Make sure that everything Cassandra had taken from Wild Crawler is packed and ready to be transported up to Yurene.”
“It’s already been arranged,” Anubis replied in a bored voice. “Discreetly, of course, so that no attention was called to it.”
團
“I’d suggest you check again,” I said impatiently, and my eyes narrowed at him. “I don’t want any potential clues to be left behind after our departure.”
My tone seemed to be firm enough to get a reaction from the dark–haired man, and he rose from his seat and gave me a curt nod. “Right.”
He began to head over to the door, but he stopped just short of it and turned back to look at me.”
“Remember what I’ve said to you,” he said with a raised eyebrow. “Consider it carefully. If you’ve started developing feelings toward the healer, you’d better smother them now. They could threaten all, we’ve worked
toward.”
He didn’t wait for me to answer and left the room. The moment that the door closed behind him, I glanced down at Cassandra.
Was Anubis right? Was I behaving out of turn?
I could have easily been crueler and more decisive in my execution when it came to speaking with her. I was a king, of course. I didn’t need her empathy.
I remembered the day when I’d killed my father. I’d slit the old man’s throat with my sharp claws when he was lying in his bed, too weak to fight. As the blood burst from his neck, I heard him shriek and then he began to laugh.
-2/3
Chapter 193 Far too late
“Now, you deserve to be a king.” he’d uttered just before he took his final breath.
Though the act sounded horrific, it was the tradition of Yurene, our twisted ideology. Only the strong deserve to live and be rewarded. That’s why father had to kill his brothers to be the king. And that was why I had to kill all of my siblings to take the crown.
But I hated it.
I hated my father with every fiber of my being, and that feeling grew stronger and stronger with every passing day. I also hated endless battles, violence, and war. But to enact change, real change, I had to climb to the top.
I knew I’d made the right choice. I hadn’t done anything wrong. As Anubis sald, I was never afraid of admitting my brutality, nor was I reluctant to practice it.
But why was I afraid of letting Cassandra know what kind of person I had been? Why was I ashamed of telling her if I truly believed what I’d done was justified?
As I pondered the question, I wasn’t sure of the answer.
I gently touched Cassandra’s hair and stared down at her.
Maybe Anubis was right. These days in Wegalla had somehow changed me.
I carefully set Cassandra down on the chair, and once I was certain she wouldn’t move, I rose from my chair and walked over to the window. In the time since we’d come back to Merliscire, it had started raining.
I stared at the gray skies and the clouds that covered the sun. As the rain fell to the ground, I realized there was no turning back now. It was too late for that.
Far too late.
Chapter 194 What has your family done?
BECKY
I held the handset tightly but nearly dropped it on the ground as my fingers twitched. I was shaking like. mad with nervousness, and I forced myself to take a deep breath to grow steady.
I wasn’t happy to make this call, but I knew I had to do as Cassandra wished. Her instructions were clear and I wasn’t going to risk things falling apart because I was too scared to function.
When I’d placed the phone call, I’d been put on hold and then finally, after what felt like an eternity of waiting. I heard a voice on the other end.
“This is Alpha Rayden,” he announced himself in a kind but firm tone. “With whom am I speaking?”
I took a second to clear my throat and then spoke. “Alpha Rayden, this is Becky, the healer’s assistant from Anemond.”
“Becky,” Rayden greeted me in surprise, and his tone grew more casual. “How good to hear from you. I hope you’re well. Is everything alright?”
“I’m well for the most part, but things are… amiss, to say the least,” I began. “There’s some trouble here in Anemond and I need your help. Cassandra asked me to call you.”
“Trouble,” he repeated back. “What’s going on?”
I managed to stay calm and be succinct as I explained the situation to the Alpha of Wild Crawler. He remained silent the entire time and only spoke after I asked if he would come to Merliscire.
“I will leave for Anemond at once,” he said in a voice that was underscored with anger. “Becky, was it the King of Yurene that took Cassandra?”
His fury made it sound as if he wanted to go right to Kaleb and kill him, and while I felt the same way, I knew this wasn’t the way to go about this.
“Yes,” I said cautiously. “But she was insistent that we remain calm about this. I know you want to help, but I think you should stay in Wild Crawler right now. You need to let your Pack members know that the water in the river has been contaminated.”
Rayden fell silent again, and before I could say something more, I heard a heavy bump on the other end of the line.
“What about Cassandra?” the Alpha spoke again.
“She’s tough,” I assured him gently. “And not to mention, quite gallant. You know her. She’s more. intelligent than most. I think she can figure out a resolution.”
14..
Chapter 194 What has your family done?
As the thought escaped me, I finally found some truth in my statement. Cassandra had insisted that she could handle herself and emphasized that our scientific research was of the utmost importance. We needed to continue developing the cure for the mysterious illness. It was crucial for the ailing citizens of Wegalla for us to
do so.
I wouldn’t let Cassandra down.
“I know she’s smart, but I’m worried,” Rayden countered, and he released a small sigh. “Knowing that she’s in the clutches of that… villain-”
“I know,” I cut him off before the conversation could escalate. “But we can’t interfere, Rayden. Any reckless move on our part could endanger her further. The king of Yurene is sly and vicious. We need to focus on the cure to the disease.”
The Alpha let out another heavy exhale. “Okay. You’re right, Becky. I’ll arrange a troop of well–trained guards at once and send them to Anemond.”
“Thank you, Alpha Rayden,” I said gratefully. “I’m going to do my best to create a cure for the disease as quickly as possible.”
Another thought crossed my mind, and I paused for a moment before I spoke it aloud.
“Could I make another request?” I wondered. “Would it be possible to send Healer Dickson with the troops?”
“Dickson?” Rayden repeated back in surprise.
“Yes,” I confirmed, and I fought the lump that had formed in my throat from anxiety. “He’s a well– trained. healer with a solid foundation in the medical field. Since Cassandra is gone, I could use some help, and the process would go much smoother with him here. I know it’s a tough ask and I wouldn’t want to leave Marley alone in the clinic, but… I’m in desperate need of assistance.”
I knew the Alpha would likely deny my request and there was a chance that Dickson’s presence would be awkward after our last conversation, but I knew it was the right decision. All I cared about now was to invent the cure for the disease. I couldn’t watch any more patients die.
“I will arrange it at once,” Rayden replied without missing a beat. “Is there anything else, Becky.”
“No,” I said. “Thank you for doing this.”
“Of course,” he said, and then he hung up the phone.
I did the same, and after I let out a soft sigh of relief, I ran a hand through my short hair. I took a moment to collect myself and then got back to work. First, I checked on our current patients, and then I went to check on Lord Kane. The Alpha King’s stepbrother was still fast asleep, much to my relief, so I made sure to remain quiet so I wouldn’t wake him.
When I returned to the lobby, I ran into Hannah and asked the girl to keep an eye on the clinic while I went to the lab. She appeared completely terrified, and when I asked what was wrong, her pretty eyes watered.
Chapter 194 What has your family done?
“I’m sorry, Miss Becky” she apologized. “I’m being a coward. I hid in one of the rooms upstairs when I heard all of the noise. I should have come downstairs to help you and Edka and Finnick, but I was too scared to
move.”
I reached out and touched her arm. I didn’t blame her for her actions. It was perfectly reasonable for her to react that way. Anyone else would have done the same.
It’s alright, Hannah,” I assured her. “It’s not your fault. Take a deep breath and collect yourself. Then head into the clinic, okay?”
Hannah nodded immediately and wiped her tears. Once I was sure she was okay, I left the lobby and headed straight to the lab.
It was grueling work to reorganize Spike’s research and reports.
It took a great amount of concentration and effort, and I was completely absorbed in the work when I heard a knock on the door.
“Who is it?” I called out.
“Hannah,” the maid’s meek volce replied, and then the door opened and she stepped into the room. “Someone is here, Miss Becky.”
“Who?” I asked cautiously.
“I don’t know,” she replied, and then she forced down a gulp. “He’s very tall and muscular, and his eyes are strange.”
My eyebrows knitted together and my heart skipped a beat. I immediately wondered if it was another one of the guards, and braced for trouble.
I set down my research and followed the maid out into the hallway. When I came out of the lab, I was surprised to see Silas.
I was stunned for a moment.
What was he doing here?
As I approached, I got a good look at him. The Beta appeared exhausted, and his expression was painted with impatience.
“Becky,” he said before I could say a word. “You need to come with me now.”
He took a step toward me and held out his hand, but I stared down at it cautiously.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“Something is going to happen in Anemond,” he said vaguely, his tone solemn. “It’s dangerous here. I’m
Chapter 194 What has your family done?
going to find you a safe place to hide out before everything gets bad-”
“What’s going to happen?” I cut him off before he could finish his statement. I was vexed by his ambiguous attitude and his strange, protective air.
“There’s no time to explain,” Silas insisted.
I held my ground. “Then don’t explain, Silas. I’m not going anywhere. I have to stay here and finish my job. I can’t leave the lab.”
The Beta frowned and released a heavy sigh. His golden eyes bore into me with intensity and his shoulders slumped in defeat.
about?
“Becky, something has happened to the Alpha King,” he said quietly.
My eyes widened in surprise. “What… what happened to the Alpha King?”
I
“It’s too difficult of a story to explain now,” Silas said, and this time, I exhaled loudly.
“Is it difficult to explain or do you just not want to?” I huffed. “What’s with the vagueness, Silas?”
He pursed his lips and simply stared at me. I began to worry. What was going on? What was he talking
Then, it dawned on me. The guards that had burst in wore the Beta family’s crest on their uniforms.
“It was your family, wasn’t it?” I questioned him coldly. “Did they do something to the Alpha King?”
Chapter 195 A better Beta I froze in place and my mind fought to find a reasonable response. Her lovely russet eyes shot daggers in my direction, and the coldness of her tone was almost enough to send me to my knees in shame. I didn’t know what to say. Becky was right, of course. It wasn’t hard to explain. The whole story was straightforward and could be told simply in one sentence- my father had decided to betray the Alpha King and my sister had drugged Asher to postpone his return to Anemond. But I couldn’t tell her any of this… could I? “Fine, I don’t need you to explain,” Becky interrupted my thoughts in an even colder voice than before. “I couldn’t care less about this. I don’t care what side you’re on, Silas, I just want you to stay the hell out of my way.” Her sudden intensity surprised me, and I took a step back in shock. I’d never heard her react so angrily, but I also couldn’t fault her. This was a dangerous and confusing situation for everyone. All I wanted to do was protect her, but she didn’t want my help. She turned around and started to head back into the lab, but before she could cross the threshold and close the door behind her, I uttered a quiet plea. “I couldn’t imagine if you died.” I hadn’t meant to speak the words aloud, but after the talk I had with Adalyn, the reaction was purely on instinct. All I could think about was Becky and her safety. I was afraid of what could happen if Father or my sister got their hands on her. Whether she knew it or not, she was in danger, and I couldn’t let her get hurt. Becky turned around to face me, and she pushed her round glasses up the bridge of her nose. ||| 1/4 16:00 Tue, 26 Dec Chapter 195 A better Beta “I’m not weak, Silas,” she stated firmly. “And I don’t think anyone is coming after me of all people. I’m
just a healer’s assistant, a poor commoner. I’m nobody.” The moment her sentence reached my ears I wanted to cry out in response.
How could she be nobody? She was my fated mate! I clenched my fists at my side and fought the urge to remind her of her importance. I knew it would fall on deaf ears anyway. “Becky,” I uttered instead and I shook my head slowly. “You aren’t just nobody.” She shrugged. “Look, if you’re worried about the mate bond, you might as well stop. I don’t think it would affect your power even if I died. I’ve done plenty of research on the topic. The mate bond is only effective after two wolves mate-” “That’s not what I’m worried about,” I cut her off. “Becky, I love you.” Silence fell, and we were both stunned that I’d blurted out such an intense confession. But moments later, relief washed over me. I finally understood my feelings for her, and I’d managed to say them aloud. I loved her. It was why I’d gone all the way out to Wild Crawler to see her and why I’d returned to Anemond after Adalyn’s evil threat. I loved the gorgeous healer. She was the kindest, most intelligent, and feisty woman I’d ever known. I’d spent my entire life being quiet and observant. I’d receded to the shadows and forced myself away from my family in an attempt to stay out of their wicked affairs, and as a result, I was detached and numb. Becky had brought me back to life. She made me want to be a better man, a better wolf, a better Beta. Her reddish brown eyes widened at my declaration and her freckled cheeks flushed scarlet. She tucked her dark red hair behind her ear, and the moment she く |||

To my surprise, those lips that drove me mad with desire curled into a smile. “Thank you,” she said sweetly, and then she let out a soft exhale. “I appreciate the sentiment, Silas… but that doesn’t change my mind. I’m not your little pet.” When I frowned, she continued. “I mean, I don’t need you to shelter me away as if I’m a small kitten,” she clarified, and a look of determination flashed across her delicate features. “I know I’m not strong like you, but I still have something to fight for, and I want to follow through. No one is going to change my mind. Please don’t look down at me-” “That’s not what I was trying to say,” I insisted after I swallowed the lump in my throat. “Becky, I know you’re not weak. I’m… I’m just worried about you.” She took a long, deep breath, and then glanced up at me with a small, almost sad smile. “I’m grateful for that,” she said in a softened voice. “But there are more important things that you need to do now. Wegalla needs you, Silas. Everyone is in danger.” She was right. I knew it. But I didn’t know what to do. “What do I do?” I lamented quietly. I couldn’t betray my loyalty to the Alpha King, but I also didn’t believe that I could point my claws against the neck of my father either. We gazed at one another in silence for a minute, and then she gave me a small nod and walked back to the lab. I lingered there and watched the door close, and the moment it did, I released a heavy sigh. She was right. I knew what to do. After I thanked the maid, I walked out of the clinic and was surprised to find that it was raining. I glanced up at the gloomy gray sky. The color of the clouds was fitting, as the general atmosphere was so distressing. As I walked down the stone path, I noticed a few Beta guards were hanging around near the clinic. Though they were shielded by darkness, I could sense them easily. They were monitoring the place. Thankfully, they were not armed. Their presence was intimidating, but I knew that Becky wasn’t in imminent danger. I glanced beyond the clinic at the street that would lead me to the House of Moses. Perhaps I should have a talk with my father. If I tried hard enough and reminded him of how things could be if we simply stopped the madness, I could convince him to stop. But when I turned to look at the road in the opposite direction, the hope I’d felt in my belly faded away. I knew Father all too well. Try as I might…maybe it was too late to talk to him.
