Chapter 236 ASHER *| don’t think this is a good idea,” Silas uttered before | had the chance to say a word.

Kane’s violet eyes flashed and his eyebrows creased together in confusion. “Oh? And what would you suggest we do. Silas I’m not hearing you brainstorm any helpful ideas. Please, the floor is all yours. Offer up something useful.”

Silas’ demeanor grew defensive and his lips drew into a thin line. When he didn’t reply within a second or two, Kane scoffed in his direction.

“That’s what | thought,” my stepbrother remarked and then he smirked. “You have nothing in mind, do you, Moses?” He took care to emphasize Silas’ surname, and it was spat with venom right back at the Beta. | knew Silas didn’t trust Kane,

my stepbrother fully trust Silas. The two men stared at one another silently, and tension hung in the air. | allowed this to go on for a minute, and then | cleared my throat and stepped between them.

Hot

“Enough,” | said in a low and warning voice, and | held my hands up in an attempt to de-escalate things before they got intense. “Don't behave like a children. There’s too much going on to act this way.”

Silas took a step back, but his mouth remained curled into a snarl

Kane rolled his eyes and then glanced at the door. “If we’re done here, I’m going to go talk to our soldier. Time is of the essence, brother. We can’t hesitate any longer.

He offered me a small bow of respect but didn’t wait for my dismissal to leave. While | was slightly annoyed by this, | knew he had a good point. Time was indeed limited and we needed to enact the plan as soon as possible.

Silas stared at the door, and once he was certain we were alone, his expression softened.

“Asher, | don’t think this is a good idea,” he reiterated to me quietly. “I know he’s your brother, but | don’t think he should play the part of king. What if he betrays us or plays some kind of trick-

“And what kind of trick could he play?” | questioned my Beta.

Silas didn’t answer at first, and then he released a soft sigh “I don’t know. But | think i it's worth keeping in mind that Kane’s mother, Mistress Margaret, seems to have an unusual relationship with my father. Considering what my father is doing. | think we need to be cautious about Kane. He seems loyal at present, but things could change.”

Though his words seemed a touch harsh and biased, | knew what he meant. If Margaret pressed a knife against my chest, would Kane be able to kill her?

But that wasn’t a question | could concern myself with right now. We needed Kane for the job and | had to trust him.

Thank you for your words,” | said, and | reached out and grasped the Beta’s shoulder. “I hear you and appreciate your concern, Silas. I'll handle this and keep an eye on him to the best of my ability. For now, we follow through with the plan

Silas bowed his head in respect and that was that

Though | still wasn’t certam about all of this, | had to trust Kane had my best interests at heart. | had no other choice. He was my brother after all, and | needed as many allies as possible to survive this coup

Aller my conversation will files, we begati our preparation for the next day. We were going to visit the Sky Pride Pack Vitonow. They scie a Park that

meet with any of the members. The recluuve Chapter 236

wolves preferred the privacy of their own region and rarely left the hills. In all of my father’s years as king, he’d never mentioned meeting a wolf of Sky Pride.

| hoped that fact would bode well, but it was difficult to say for certain. The Alphas of Wegalla were all so different from one another that it was hard to predict how our diplomatic meetings would go.

We began the first part of the journey later that day. After we picked up our belongings, we hiked through the woods until we reached the foot of the mountains. As the sun set and the woods were hathed in the violet haze of twilight, we stopped for the night and made camp

There was a small inn close to the hills, but we decided it was too risky to stay there, even if it was just for a single night We wanted to remain as inconspicuous as possible to prevent the Sky Pride wolves from hearing of our presence too early. Camping also allowed us to avoid any assassins who would likely have their eyes on places like the inn.

So, we made camps underneath an enormous pine tree. Kane stayed in the King’s camp, meanwhile Silas decided to conduct the night's watch with another soldier.

| stayed in the soldier’s camp, and though | had a tent to myself. | couldn’t really sleep that night. Everything we’d endured. recently swirled around in my mind, along with thoughts of Cassandra, | didn’t know if she was alright, and | had to make great efforts to not think about going to the North to look for her.

But at the end of the day. | missed my mate dearly. | wanted to kiss her. | wanted to wrap my arms around her petite frame and pull her close. | wanted to hold her hands and never let them go again.

The memory of her beautiful green eyes and the sweet smell of her long hair lulled me to rest. | managed to get some sleep. but it didn’t last all that long.

It was around midnight when | heard a sudden noise. It wasn’t loud, but on a night as silent as this, it was clear. | sat straight up in my tent.

Something must have happened. Was Silas still out there?

| peered out into the night and was surprised to see that no one else had roused from the sudden sound. Most of the soldiers seemed to be in deep sleep, which was abnormal.

| stepped out of my tent and carefully walked out of the canip. | took slow, furtive steps, but my timid pace came to a sudden halt when | found Silas lying on the ground.

“Silas!” | uttered, and | ran to the Beta at once. When he didn’t rouse, | bent down to take his pulse. It was faint, and his chest rose and fell ever so slightly. | tried to wake him, but he didn’t react to my efforts. | suddenly heard the noise again and realized it was coming from the King’s camp.

“I'll be back,” | assured Silas’ unconscious frame quietly, and then | shifted into my wolf form. | wasn’t sure what | was about to face, but | would be better suited to handle it with my razor-sharp claws.

| carefully approached the camp, and just as | arrived, a sudden whimper reached my cars, followed by a loud groan. | couldn't wait any longer, | rushed into the camp at full speed, and when | did, | was greeted by a gruesome sight

“What happened?” 1 demanded as | knelt down to Kane’s level “Are you alright?”

My stepbrother nodded. “I’m alright. | stabbed myself, so the wound isn’t very severe.”

| frowned as confusion flooded through me. Why would you do that? | don’t understand.”

The woman is a sorceress,” Kane explained, and he gestured arthe unconscious woman, “She used magic to lull Silas and the other soldiers to sleep. | stabbed myself just to stay conscious.”

Chapter 237 CASSANDRA

Though | was scared to do so. | decided to ask Kaleb if | could get some medicine for Ms. Benn’s daughter. | couldn’t let poor Lila suffer through the symptoms of her illness any longer. The herbs Td given the head housekeeper were enough to dull some of the aches and pains that came with pneumonia, but to be fully cured. | needed real antibiotics.

So, | summoned my strength and then requested an audience with Kaleb. The king of Yurene met with me in the same meeting room we’d conversed in the other day, and when I crossed through the doorway, there was an almost amused glint in his navy blue eyes.

“Cassandra,” he greeted me as | approached the couch and took a seat. “To what do | owe the pleasure of this meeting?”

| decided to skip straight to my request. “I need some medicine. Antibiotics and others. Is that something you could assist me with?”

“Medicine,” he repeated back, and then he raised an eyebrow. “Why do you need it? Are you ailing? Or perhaps it’s for your son or maid:”

He instinctively leaned back as if | were contagious and | fought the urge to laugh. Instead, | maintained eye contact and then shrugged.

“None OF

us are sick,” | replied. “The weather and the environment in Viokwell are so different than Anemond. | want to be prepared just in case our immune systerns can’t handle the sudden change,”

but | wasn’t about to tell the Northern king about Lila and her illness. | didn’t want to cause Ms. It wasn’t exactly the truth, bi Benn any trouble.

“Raven can cure you of any disease or ailment,” he said with a raised eyebrow

| was forced to think fast on my feet.

“| don’t want to rely on sorcery and magic,” | explained. As a healer myself, I'm more comfortable with the normal methods. of medicine. | do hope you can understand”

Kaleb stared at me for a moment and then nodded.

“Write a list of medicines you need, and I'll have someone arrange a kit for you,” he said. | was surprised he didn’t argue with me, but | was relieved that it wasn’t a fight. | supposed that my agreement to his proposal had sweetened his disposition and | hoped he would continue to be amenable.

“Thank you,” | said, and | began to rise from the couch, but Kaleb stopped me before | could get too much further.

“Not so fast, Cassandra,” he said, and then he smirked. “Now that that’s handled, | will escort you to the prison tower “The prison tower?” | repeated back in surprise.

The king of Yurene nodded as if it were an obvious next destination. “Don’t you remember? You have to receive a tull health Pamination. Raven is awaiting us as we speak

“b” said, and 1 telt my heart plummet in my chest. As a healej, | was no stranger to check-ups and medical tests. Hell I'd conducted them a million times. But it had taken me months to come around to feeling relaxed in Anemond’s clume. Yurene was a different story. While | liked Raven a great ded | didn’t ressanly trust her and | wasn’t sure how medicme was practiced here, nor did | know what sort of re lewas being celicted with any results

However. | wasn’t in any sort of position in decline agreed chalchs terms, and if | wanted to get the antibiones for Ms. Find CHIA For Small Businesse

Benn’s daughter, | needed to comply

So, | nodded my head, and then Kaleb held his hand out to me. | accepted it, though his touch made me deeply uncomfortable, and without any hesitation, we left the meeting room and headed to the prison tower.

The prison tower was a very tall building. far taller than I’d expected. Unlike Wegalla, where all of the prisoners were held captive underground, Yurene seemed to prefer to lock their prisoners in a high impenetrable place.

The ascent to the highest point in the prison tower left me breathless. | wasn’t out of shape by any means, there were just so many stairs that my muscles began to ache from the exertion.

Before | could steady my breath. | froze in place, stunned by what | saw ahead of me. An entire hallway of prisoners, lifeless in their wards. It was nearly impossible to tell if they were alive or dead. The stench of excrement and decay permeated the air, and as we walked by, | detected black marks on the prisoners bodies.

Kaleb silently led me down the corridor, and once we reached the end, we stepped into a large room. | recognized it at once as a laboratory. An empty bed was set up in the center and three researchers stood around. One of them was Raven, and she was enthusiastic when she caught sight of me

“Cassandral” she greeted me warmly and she pulled me into a tight hug after she rushed over. | accepted the embrace and when we parted ways, | noticed the other two researchers were smiling at me. Despite their friendly expressions, | still felt a little chilled. The laboratory was rather different than Keller’s in Anemond, and | had the sneaking suspicion that this room was used for human subject research.

Kaleb pulled Raven aside and exchanged a few words with her. | didn’t hear his opening statement, but | saw the dark-haired beauty frown.

“| haven't seen Anubis today,” she said quietly.

“He’s not in Viokwell,” Kaleb remarked, and his lips turned downward into a frown.

“What happened? Raven gasped, and the king rolled his dark blue eyes.

*Anubis didn’t get any updates from Roxy or any information about her, so he went to look for her,” he said. Raven shrugged. “Roxy will be just fine.”

“| hope so, Kaleb lamented. He turned to leave, but before he dul, he made one last request to Raven. “Please escort Cassandra back to her chamber once your examination is complete.”

Raven agreed, and then Kaleb left without another word.

Though | was nervous, | managed to stay calm. | carefully looked around and tried to gather as much information as possible. This place seemed scary, but | knew after everything I’d been through. | could handle this exam

“Don’t be nervous.” Raven assured me. This will be an easy check.” Horced a sale Thope | don’t have to lie on that bed. It looks a little intimidating “Of course, you don’t the socess insisted with a wave of her land. That bed is for the guinea pigs

“We're running out of guinea pigs.” she noted casually. “Luckily you showed up so | don’t have to work o research anymore.”

She appeared excited as she said this, and her lips curled into a smile. She acted like an innocent young girl conducting such horrible atrocities.

Did she not understand how messed up this was?

As | pondered the idea, Raven pulled on a pair of latex gloves and retrieved a syringe.

“I need to take some blood from you,” she said.

“Raven, what's your research about?” | blurted out as | took a seat. “Why do you need the guinea pigs?”

“Kaleb wants to control the guinea pigs and turn them into his weapons,” Raven responded quickly, and the moment the sentence escaped her mouth, her cheeks turned scarlet. It was clear by her reaction that she hadn’t meant to say that, and when | turned around, | could see that the other researchers appeared panicked

Raven suddenly uttered a dry laugh that startled me.

“It was just a joke.” she said with a wave of her hand, and then her expression shifted. “I can’t tell you the real reason why this research is being conducted. It’s top secret.”

Chapter 238

CASSANDRA

It wasn’t a joke.

| knew it in my bones

Raven's expression had given it away the moment she’d been caught.

The storm clouds that had plagued my mind felt as if they'd cleared away, and the puzzle pieces felt as if they'd been pu together.

Mind control. Sorcery. Weapon.

That’s what Kaleb wanted, to turn the poor, diseased people into his weapon. Though it sounded utterly insane, this speculation seemed more plausible as Raven fidgeted and kept telling me what she had told me wasn’t a fact.

“| shouldn’t make jokes like that,” she said, her tone jittery and nervous. “Roxy would kill me if she’d heard that.”

The dark-haired sorceress offered me a dry smile, and for a moment, | debated on pestering her further, but instead, | decided to bide my time. It was best to go along with things for my safety, so 1 offered Raven a smile back.

“Don't worry,” | assured her warmly. “I know you were kidding, Raven.”

She nodded and seemed to soften up a bit. “If you want to know more about the research, Cassandra, you could ask Kaleb Without his permission, I’m afraid | can’t share very much with you.”

| wanted to laugh but forced myself to keep a straight face. As if merely asking the king of Yurene would be enough for him to let me know what he was doing here in this prison tower. Surely, Raven thought we were far closer than we were, or else she would know better than to suggest something like that.

| expected something else to come up about the matter, but instead, Raven fell completely silent and began to take my blood. | cooperated well and didn’t fidget, though my mind ran in circles the entire time. Once she finished, she placed the tube of blood in a device I'd never seen before. It was both technologically advanced and a little archaic, and | wanted to ask what it was or what its function was, but | knew how that would go.

So, instead. | asked some of the questions | knew she would be able to answer.

“Raven, what's the difference between Inferno and Black Marks? | wondered, and | made sure to sound as innocently curious as possible | wasn’t a fan of manipulation, but | was learning that here in this Northern country, it was necessary to

Raven comidered the question for a moment, her dark eyebrows drawing together.

“It's very complicated” she said carefully, seemingly more prudent this time, as if she were weighing her words. “But the that Inferno wasn’t intended to destroy the body physically. In fact, it's supposed to enhance one’s

.

“Do you mean immortal?” | asked as | stared at her in disbelief, unable to contain my shock at the idea

“That’s the word,” Raven said with enthusiasm, and then she nodded. “Inferno can turn someone immortal... theoretically. It's just an assumption since no one has actually seen Inferno or used it. Between us, | doubt if Emmett Keller was actually able to make something so potent. I’ve never understood why Kaleb was so persistent in trying to replicate it if there was no evidence of its existence. Anyway, I've done my best and | don’t think Kaleb should expect more, you know?”

When her rambling came to an end, her lips curled into a smirk, and | took a moment to absorb this information. Immortality.

To suggest that a poison could alter the body and keep it from suffering the effects of aging was not only unheard of, but also impossible. It seemed that the only thing in the head of these men in power was continuing their life spans.

Of course, I’d seen many things that should have been impossible. Was there some merit in what Inferno was capable of?

Though there was plenty | wanted to say to the sorceress, | couldn’t speak a word. My head screamed as | pondered all of the secrets | had to keep. | felt like a pawn on Emmett and Kaleb’s chess table, with Asher and the old king as additional pieces.

Was that all we were to them? Pawns and players to be shifted about to further their ongoing agendas and lust for power?

Though | was usually rational and collected. | wanted to rip my hair out and scream from frustration. This wasn’t the life I'd wanted for myself, and as | pondered the web that we'd all become tangled in. | thought of Emmett and his part in the situation. | wished | could meet him in my dreams again and tell him that | knew what he’d done. | wanted to confront him and ask what he had wanted exactly, why he’d done all of these things to me and the people | knew. Was it all just for revenge! For something that Asher and | had nothing to do with

Why were we being punished for the crimes of others?”

| knew in the back of my mind that even if | was able to see Emmett in my dreams again, | wouldn’t be able to get clear answers from him. Besides, I’d attempted to reach him for days, even weeks, to no avail. | had no idea how to make another meeting happen.

As | considered all of these things, | noticed that Raven was studying me. Her lovely blue-green eyes nervously observed me. as if she wanted to make sure that she hadn't said something wrong again.

| wanted to accuse her, to tell her that though she was kind enough, she was involved in this twisted game as well. But instead. | decided to further bide my time and fake a smile.

“| agree, | lied pleasantly. “Inferno sounds too good to be true.

The sorceress face relaxed and she seemed relieved. Though she didn’t speak. | could tell that I’d said the right things to convince her all was well

We trashed my physical exam soon after, and Raven offered to escort me back | didn’t protest, and as we walked through the dark corridor, | did my best not to stare at the so-called “guinea pigs, though it made my heart ache to do so. Meanwhile when | glanced at Raven, her expression was emotionless She didn’t seem to care about those prisoners and esen complained to the guard about the smell

Chapter 239

That night, as | studied the map Helene had given me, | put together all of the information. I’d been presented with and made several speculations.

First, the name of the poison that had infected Asher was likely Interno, not Black Marks. Asher had received it far too long ago, and if the infected in Wild Crawler were any indication, he would have deteriorated already if Raven’s recreation was in his veins. Of course, if it was in fact Inferno, why hadn't it taken effect right away?

If | remember it clearly, Asher started to get the Black Marks on his body around the time he’d visited Wild Crawler. So, what had triggered the reaction on his skin? It was hard to make assumptions about what was going on without specific scientific information or data to assess. | was a healer, but | was also a scientist, and without true research to observe, | was a little confused.

At the very least, | was relieved to know that if Asher was truly infected with Inferno, and it had the effects Raven thought it did, he wouldn't die any time soon.

Second, mind control seemed to be real, and a major concern to consider. Although Raven hadn’t found a way to achieve it yet. | knew that’s what she was researching. It was also likely the reason that Emmett created Inferno. He invented the poison for the old king of Wegalla and claimed it was a magic remedy to help him keep his youth.

Emmett hadn’t lied about that part, but he didn’t tell the king the whole truth. He wanted to use the poison to control the king. But the king, maybe being skeptical and fearful, used it on his son instead of himself, to test it.

Third, the great magic that Emmett placed within my body was the key to achieving mind control. Whatever magic lived within me was the catalyst to make his agenda come true.

As my eyes welled up with tears, | forced myself to take a long, deep breath, though the effort felt impossible.

Though | couldn’t confirm with absolute certainty that these speculations were 100% correct, | had a strong feeling that they weren't far off from the truth. That being said... what could | do? Should | tell Ronald right away? | was his informant after all, and we'd made a deal. | knew | needed to uphold my side of the bargain, but would it be better to keep these theories to myself until | knew the truth?

Or would it be better to keep them hidden completely?

| folded the map back up and stared over at the beds on the other side of the chamber. Erika and Finnick were fast asleep. and though we were all in the same room, I’d never felt more lonely. It was so hard not to tell them everything, but | couldn’t risk their safety, not when things were already so precarious. Their involvement in the events that happened in Anemond were worse enough. They couldn’t get involved in what happened here in Yurene.

| would keep this to myself for as long as necessary.

Fromutered my next course of action for several days, and then, | crafted a bold plan. If Helene could escape Viokwell, 1 might be able to slip away to Wegalla to tell them what was going on. If | could get to my homeland. | could warn them about how dangerous the patients infected with Black Marks would become, tell them about what I'd seen here in Yurene.

Besides, Wild Crawler would be the perfect place for Helene to hide herself if she hadn't yet selected a location to run away to ht wat right on the border, tucked away far from where anyone could castly had her. It was perfect, small without being too small, and full of kind people

O6ow the kind ones wore likely the ones who had not yet been infected by Raven’s poisonous creation: 112

| decided to present this idea to Helene and quickly scrawled a message for her. | asked Ms. Benn to delives at hoping that the delivery of the note would lead to Helene inviting me to lunch as I’d done the other day. | made certain to be sague in my note so we wouldn’t get caught.

But to my surprise, when the housekeeper arrived, she told me that Helene appeared to be sick and that she'd spoken. instead, to Ronald. The king’s cousin had returned to his residence because of his fiance's illness and told Ms. Benn that Helene was unable to meet anyone now, but if | had important things to speak to her about, | could come tomorrow. He would send a maid to pick me up tomorrow afternoon and we could meet in the glass garden.

| was both baffled and worried by this news Helene was sick? How was that possible? After our last meeting, she’d looked radiant, and now, after only a few days, she was

Though | knew it was just paranoia talking. | wondered if Ronald was involved. Had he found anything suspicious? Or was this meeting happening because he couldn't wait to hear what | was going to say about Kaleb’s secrets?

Either way, | needed to be cautious,

| quickly thanked Ms. Benn and the housekeeper nodded. She mentioned that she'd love to help because of what I’d done for her daughter. Ms. Benn’s attitude had improved a lot as Lila had gotten better. The housekeeper had even started bringing Lila to my chambers to play with Finnick.

Lila was a serious but smart little girl. Finnick shared his toys with her and taught her how to play chess. In the meantime, Ms. Benn and | would sit down and drink tea. Though she didn’t speak much, her attitude towards me had improved.

One day, Ms. Benn fold me about herself. She told me that she could never thank the king enough for what he’d done for her. He’d saved her from her bitter life. Though she hadn't elaborated, | gathered that she had come from a small Pack that was annexed by Yurene.

Unlike Helene, who had witnessed how brutal the attacks and battles were, Ms. Benn described the conquering Yurenian soldiers as saviors. Before they arrived, she was abused by her “lover”- an alcoholic who wanted to sell her daughter to his creditor. Ms. Benn said she was more than glad when he was killed by a soldier. She thought she was going to be killed as well, but when the soldiers lifted their claws, the king intervened. He saved her and her daughter and gave her a job.

As Ms. Benn expressed her gratitude toward Kaleb, | asked a question.

“If the king is so nice, why couldn’t Lila get proper medical treatment?”

As soon as the question left my mouth, | wanted to take it back. Since Ms. Benn admired Kaleb so much, | was certain she would probably be annoyed.

And yet, she wasn’t and replied very calmly.

“The king isn’t perfect,” she said. “But he’s trying to be, and he’s trying to make a perfect world. | hope one day he'll be able to make it happen.”

Chapter 240

Chapter 240 ASHER

Much to our dismay and agitation, the sorceress mouth was very tight. No matter what we tried. Kane and | cou answers out of her. She was well-trained and her expression refined eerily calm and aloof no matter what question

asked of her.

Thankfully, there were a few facts we knew to be true right away just by looking at her. It wasn’t difficult to surmise from her dress that she was from the North. She also shared the same tilt of her head that seemed to be a cultural gesture amongst the Yurenians. I'd seen Kaleb do the same thing many times while he was here in Anemond, so | knew she was from his country.

As we continued our interrogation, | grew worried about Silas and the soldiers, but luckily, after half an hour or so, they awoke from their magic-induced slumber. Apart from feeling a bit dizzy and disoriented, they seemed to be fine, but the atmosphere around camp was tense and unpleasant.

This Northern sorceress had caused a big quarrel between Silas and Kane. Silas thought the sorceress needed to be “dealt with” immediately, while my stepbrother believed she could be an important figure from whom we could get crucial information. The Beta, unsurprisingly, disagreed and thought Kane was idealizing the situation since we couldn’t get even a syllable out of her mouth.

As much as | didn’t want to admit it. Silas was right. The longer the sorceress was alive, the more dangerous things would be. Not to mention, she was a magic user. What if she used some sort of sorcery to contact her accomplice? Surely she wasn’t alone in her mission, and | wasn’t sure what else could happen if she were to get loose.

But there was one other thing | was concerned about, one | didnt vocalize to Kane and Silas. If the sorceress was sent from Yurene, would she know anything about Cassandra? Would her life or death affect Cassandra’s situation and livelihood in the savage Northern country?

Though | knew certain matters were objectively more pressing, Cassandra would always remain at the forefront of my thoughts. Though she wasn’t here, the beautiful healer was the most important thing to me, and she permeated my mind more than anything else.

| didn’t speak as Kane and Silas argued with one another until Kane blurted out a statement that made me stop in my tracks.

“What if the North does something bad to Cassandra because we killed this sorceress?” he demanded, his violet eyes flashing intensely as he stared at Silas. “Is that a risk that you’re willing to take, Silas?”

The Beta didn’t say anything. He ran his hand through his dark brown hair and then turned to face me. His golden irises were soft, as if he was sympathetic to Kane’s mention of my mate.

While we all knew Kane’s suggestion was not very possible, we couldn’t eliminate the possibility because we didn’t know the sorceress intention. The only thing we knew for certain was that she had no intention to kill me, otherwise, she would have just used some type of deadly poison or magic as she sat there before us.

So what did she want?

And what did her master want:

Much to our surprise, the sorceress laughed. It was a dry one, a cynical laugh Sitas hood a glare in her direction “What are you laughing.

The surcourss harmed her eyes, her expression shifting to one of coldness rather than amusement. She took a moment goak, and when the dol, her vore wots arcilated

My eyebrows creased together. Do you know Cassandra Kellerhand how she is doing Is she safe

The sorceress snorted and rolled her eyes again. “I know nothing about the woman, except for the the queen soon My stomach dropped and my jaw nearly fell with it.

“Queen” | repeated back coarsely as my throat tightened.

“My king is obsessed with the healer and couldn’t wait to claim her as his, the sorceress remarked bitterly. She narrow. eyes at me. “The king didn’t want her former lover to impede the wedding, so he sent me to kill you.”

Before | could realize what | was doing, | hinged and grabbed the sorceress by the throat. My claws extended and dug int the soft skin of her neck, She let out a soft cry, but the pitiful sound meant nothing to me. My vision was tinted red with anger and | could hardly think straight.

“Did Cassandra agree to marry him?” | demanded. 1 Despite my hold on her, the sorceress managed a laugh. “Why wouldn't she agree? He’s the king of Yurene.

For the briefest moment, | considered squeezing further to silence the sorceress forever. It would be easy enough. | had a tight grip around her and it wouldn’t take much to snap her neck. Though | wasn’t one for violence. | had no qualms about hurting this would-be assassin.

But instead. | released my chokehold, and as she fell to the ground, the world around me began to grow blurry. The camps, the soldiers. Silas, and Kane... all faded away. All | could see in my mind was Cassandra. Her big beautiful emerald eyes, her full lips. | saw them fell me goodbye to me..

| began to walk away without a second thought. In fact, | could hardly think at all, | was so consumed with my mission to see her. | needed her in front of me right away, Wegalla be damned. What good was it reclaiming my throne if she would never be beside me again?

Silas and Kane tried to get to stand in my way to stop “Asher, she’s lying,” Kane insisted. “She’s trying to agitate you. It’s all a trap-”

| growled and shoved him away, attacking them as if they were my enemies rather than my friends. While part of me wondered if what the sorceress said was true or not, | couldn’t think straight. There was a strong chance that the woman was trying to vex me since I'd thwarted her mission, but | didn’t care My natural instincts had taken over, and as | stood there in the forest, | didn’t feel like myself anymore.

Without my mate, nothing was worth fighting for. I'd always known that and I never wanted to feel alone again. | needed her, no matter what the cost. If she was angry with me for coming after her, | would kneel at her feet and beg for her forgiveness. | would kiss her a million times over and swear my endless love to her. The rest of the world didn’t matter. All | knew was that | had to see Cassandra.

| had to make sure she was still mine, still my Cora It was the only thought on my mind, the only one that t truly mattered.
