Ch. 266..270: Alpha King’s Lost Luna Chapter 266-270
Chapter 266 CAS SANDRA
Through my chamber window, | could see cars and well-dressed werewolves cross through the main gate and enter the fortress every hour starting from the early morning hours. Even from my place on the second floor, | could hear the bustling sounds of the grounds. Vliokwell was alive with activity, and my heart was racing as | realized the scale of this impending wedding.
Most of the guests attending Helene and Ronald’s ceremony were being accommodated in the main building, but a few were being housed in the side buildings, including the one where | resided.
With all of the activity and movement throughout the fortress, Ms. Benn was incredibly busy. The head housekeeper stopped by my chamber early in the morning when she usually dropped off Lila and when | noticed her daughter wasn’t with her, mentioned that she would be bringing her daughter by later in the day.
As | heard the noise from the hallway filter into my room, | felt uneasy. | hadn’t heard this much commotion in my entire time here, and | was a little nervous about it all.
Despite my anxiety at the event itself and the large amount of guests, the excitement of the wedding had spread through the entire castle. For the first time since I'd arrived, there was a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. Music and conversation filled the halls, and even the guards, who usually wore harsh expressions, were smiling. It was a little strange to behold, but | decided to use everyone’s good moods to my advantage.
When | approached the guards with Lila and Finnick in tow and asked them if | could take a walk outside, they didn’t object much. Instead, they simply recommended that | take a route to avoid the main road and the guests.
| nodded in understanding and after | offered them smiles, they let us pass by.
It was a gray and cloudy day, but | didn’t let the lack of sun bother me too much. | was just happy to leave the prison of my chamber unaccompanied by anyone but my son and his friend.
As we walked, | caught some of the eyes of guests but averted my gaze quickly before the guards could notice. | was hoping to find someone wh
dressed like a Southerner, but | wasn’t having much luck with it. Everyone out in the yard appeared to be Northerners, much to my dismay, and | had to stifle my disappointment to avoid suspicion from the guards.
Lila and Finnick ran happily in front of me, their eyes alight with excitement as they scanned the busy grounds. Though | was a little stressed, | was grateful they were at least feeling happy for the first time in a while.
My attention was caught suddenly by a large box being carried in by a few serv ants. It was a beautiful scarlet color, with the image of the Moon Goddess carved into the surface of it. The Goddess’ image was soft and kind.
As | studied it, | had the strong feeling it was a gift from the South. | didn’t suspect that the savage and violent Northerners would ever portray the Moon Goddess in such a soft sort of manner.
| craned my neck around as they walked past and tried to search the yard for potential Wegallians. Before | could find anyone, | heard Finnick call my name.
“Mommy!” he shouted and then he repeated himself as he ran right into me.
“What is it?” | wondered as | frowned down at him in surprise. My son didn’t answer at first. He stared at me with concern in his large gray eyes and after he let out a soft sigh, he gestured, indicating for me to squat down.
| wasn’t sure what was so dire, but | obliged without question. Once | was at his level, Finnick leaned in close and whispered in my ear.
“Mommy,” he said softly. “Mommy, | saw the Alpha King.” My lips parted in shock. The Alpha King?
| was completely stunned for a moment. My heart raced and | fought to catch my breath. | managed to steady myself seconds later and then spoke.
“Do you mean Asher?” | asked.
| knew it was likely a silly question, but | had to know with absolute certainty that Finnick was speaking about my mate and not Kaleb.
When my son nodded firmly, | instinctively lifted my head and craned around eagerly, searching the lawn for Asher. Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to be anywhere near us. | couldn’t find a single man who looked like Asher.
My lower lip trembled in disappointment, and my eyes began to well up with tears. | wouldn’t have known what to say to him anyway, but I’d been so thrilled and relieved to see him that | hadn't
cared. Asher. My Asher.
Before the tears could fall down, my cheeks, | managed to calm down. As much as | wanted to believe he was here, it sounded impossible. How could Asher be here? That would be ridiculous, not to mention reckless on his part.
“You must have seen wrong, honey,” | said to Finnick softly
He frowned and then shook his head. “I saw him, Mommy! | know | did.”
His voice grew louder, and | began to panic as the guards started to glance in our direction. | didn’t want to attract attention, especially when it came to something like this.
“Shh,” | shushed him strongly but not harshly. “Quiet down, Finnick. You must have seen someone else.”
“But-” he started to protest, but when | shook my head, his voice came to a halt. As his eyes fell to [e)

the ground, Lila glanced between us in confusion.
Knowing we had the risk of calling attention to ourselves, | decided that it was time for us to go back inside. | wasn’t in the mood to walk anymore.
As we returned to our room, my mind was only focused on Asher. No matter what | did, | couldn’t shift my thoughts away from his face and the possibility he could be here in Yurene.
Once we were back, | tried to distract myself but | couldn’t. | went to the far corner of the room and stared.out the window. My lip began to quiver again. | had been missing and worrying about Asher nonstop since I'd arrived here in the North, and | couldn’t suppress feelings any longer. I’d tried being strong, but what was the point?
Tears finally escaped me, and as | quietly cried, | heard footsteps approach, and when | turned around, Finnick was behind me. His gray eyes were even wider than usual and he wore a saddened expression.
“I'm sorry, Mommy,” he apologized quietly. “I really thought | saw someone who looked like the Alpha King. | didn’t mean to make you so sad.”
His voice was completely heartbreaking, and while | had been upset by his words, it wasn’t his fault. He was just a child, after all.
“It's not your fault,” | assured him, and | reached out and drew him toward me. | wrapped my arms around him and then kissed him on the forehead. “It was just someone who looked like him. Mommy is alright. | promise.”
Chapter 267 ASHER
The capital city of Yurene was heavily guarded, even more so than I'd expected. While I’d been well aware that the place would be swarming with security, given the scale of the wedding, the sheer amount of guards that stood around was impressive.
Our car joined the line of other vehicles waiting to approach the enormous gates, and when | rolled down the window, the guards began to speak. We were told once entered through the enormous gate that our identities needed to be triple-checked before we could enter the castle that stood in the distance. The castle was equally impressive, its walls soaring so high into the air that it looked like it was kissing the clouds. It was an amazing sight to behold, though | hated admitting that anything in Yurene was impressive.
While | had been nervous to come here, | knew | had a low chance of getting caught, especially since | had disguised myself using Darwin's identity.
When I'd initially proposed the plan, the Sky Pride wolf had been agitated by the idea of me using his name to sneak into Yurene, but Kane reminded everyone that crafting a new identity for me might raise suspicion. It would be easier to assume the name of another wolf, and Darwin made the most sense. As the hand of the Alpha, Darwin would be the most suitable for attending the wedding on behalf of Sky Pride’s leader.
Thankfully for us all, Kane had been right. Taking Darwin’s badge in his stead had made it easy for me to pass through the checkpoints. The guards stationed in the different zones had a list of names they referred to whenever a guest approached, and | had made it through the first two without issue.
As | approached the third and final checkpoint, | began to grow nervous, but when the guard scanned the list and found my “name”, he smiled at me, gave a short bow of respect, and then opened the gate.
Our car passed through with ease, and once we did, the gate closed heavily behind us, ready for the next guest to present their badges.
| glanced around in amazement. The minimally decorated grounds were filled to the brim with ser vants hauling luggage and leading guests to the number of buildings around the main castle.
Though the castle appeared to be bustling with people, the gray buildings seemed quite grim. This whole place was sad and gray and bland, the sky included. | had never seen a more dismal region, and the mere thought of Cassandra being here made my heart ache for her.
Cassandra...
Was she in one of those buildings? | didn’t know, but | had to remain hopeful that she would be here.
When the car pulled to a stop, a well-dressed maid opened the door for me. Her hair was pulled 1/3

into a severe bun and her icy blue eyes were intense as they stared into mine.
“Welcome to Yurene,” she said with a polite smile. “My name is Ms. Benn. Allow me to lead you to your quarters. | apologize for the inconvenience, but the main building is full, so you will be accommodated in one of the side buildings on the left. Rest assured, the standards of the rooms in those buildings are exactly the same.”
| nodded and offered a kind expression. “Thank you very much, Ms. Benn.”
| had brought six soldiers with me to Yurene. Ms. Benn informed me that they would be sharing three rooms while | would have the room at the end of the corridor to myself. | was pleased with this arrangement. In fact, it was completely ideal. It would be convenient for me to sneak out and look around in a room at the end of the hall.
Ms. Benn told us that our luggage and personal belongings would arrive in a few minutes, and then tactfully recommended that as Southerners, we shouldn't go out at night in Viokwell, because the patrolling guards might take us as assassins or spies.
“It's purely for safety,” she explained with a small shrug and then she smiled. “Is there anything else | can do for you before | leave?”
| had the impulse to ask her where their soon-to-be-queen would be, but that would be too risky. So, instead, | just asked if any of the other guests from the South had arrived.
Ms. Benn nodded and named a few of them. “They’re in the same building, but on different floors.”
| didn’t recognize any of the names of the guests, but | knew their Packs. A few of them belonged to Wegalla, just like Sky Pride. As | pondered their names, | wondered if they were ready to betray Wegalla and collaborate with Yurene on this impending war.
| supposed | could visit some of them later. “| hope it’s alright to wander around inside the building,” | remarked. “Of course,” Ms. Benn assured me, and then she bowed again. “I hope you have a pleasant stay.”
The night fell quickly, and after dinner, | returned to my room and leaned against the windowsill as | stared out at the sky. To my dismay, the moon and stars weren't visible due to the thick cloud
cover. The grounds below had finally quieted, as all of the guests who were supposed to arrive today had
all arrived.
| glanced at the clock hanging on the wall. It was nine. The maid, Ms. Benn, had mentioned before she’d left that all serv ants would be off-duty past nine, so if | needed anything, it would be better to call them before then, otherwise, there would be a significant delay and | might not receive care until the next day.

11:28 Fri, 8 Mar RB.
| stepped away from the window and approached the door of my room. | couldn't hear anything out in the hallway. The corridor had fallen silent, which made this a pretty opportune moment.
| reached into my pocket, retrieved the letter that Cassandra had left for me, and after | said a small prayer, | pressed a kiss on it before returning it back to my pocket. It had become a ritual of mine and | used the note to give me courage. | surely needed it if | was going to pull this mission off.
After | took a moment to steady my breath, | opened the door and peered around. Once | was certain the hallway was empty, | stepped out quietly.
From what Ms. Benn had told me, | was on the fourth floor while the rest of the Southern guests were arranged on the third floor.
| wasn’t sure what my plan was, but | knew that time was of the essence and | could delay my snooping any longer. | needed to gather intel on Yurene, and | couldn't do some from the confines of my room.
Cassandra was here somewhere, and while | had no idea where she was hidden away, | vowed that | would search this entire fortress to find her. | would stop at nothing to find my mate and bring her
back home to Anemond. Back home to me.
Where she belonged.
Chapter 268
CASSANDRA
When Ms. Benn arrived at my room to pick up Lila, she handed me a small, folded—up piece of paper.
“It's an updated list of guests,” she explained when | frowned at her in confusion. “Many of the guests originally listed didn’t come and some new names have been added.”
When | nodded my head, she released a reluctant sigh.
“| also did as you requested and arranged most of the Southern guests in this building,” she revealed, a pained expression in her voice.
Though | wasn’t proud of my actions, | knew they'd been necessary. Just before Ms. Benn had left my chamber earlier that day, I'd demanded that she move the Southerners to the same building | resided in. She’d been reluctant to oblige my request, but | hadn't taken no for an answer.
| was pleased to know that at the very least, she’d followed through. | hadn't liked my actions, but this was too important of an opportunity to waste.
“Thank you, Ms. Benn,” | said.
“| don’t need your thanks,” the head housekeeper sniffed and her ice—blue eyes glared at me for a moment before they softened slightly. Still, her irritated expression remained. “I want you to keep your promise, Cassandra, and bring no harm to my daughter. Lila is a good girl, and even though she has some constrained thoughts, she’s still my daughter. Nothing could take her away from me. | would do anything for her.”
| nodded my head. “I know. | understand the feeling of being a mother. e-”
“You know nothing,” Ms. Benn rudely cut me off as her eyes shot daggers in my direction. | noticed the dark circles beneath them, as well as the redness. Something had happened, though | knew she would not tell me what. Ms. Benn seemed to have a million secrets, and while | was curious, | knew they didn’t matter. | had too many other things occupying my mind to bother.
Just as | was about to turn around and close the door, Ms. Benn’s lips parted and then trembled, as if she wanted to say something else. | stood there patiently for the briefest of moments, arms awkwardly hovering on the doorknob as | waited for her to speak, but instead, she let out a soft exhale and then turned and left.
That night, after Erika and Finnick had fallen asleep, | carefully dressed myself in the blackest clothes | owned and pulled my hair back into a braid so it wouldn't get in my face. | pulled on a comfortable and quiet pair of shoes, and once they were secure, | put on the tiny necklace weapon Helene had gifted me so long ago. | tucked it beneath the neck of my shirt and then walked over to the small dresser beside my bed and retrieved my medical kit. | grabbed a few syringes of

anesthesia and carefully tucked them into my pocket, ensuring that they wouldn’t slip.
| had decided to go on my way to visit the Pack leaders staying in the side building and wanted to make sure that | was armed in case things got out of hand.
Once all was secure, | checked the new list Ms. Benn had given me. The head housekeeper had been very thorough and noted both the names and the room numbers of all of the Southern wedding guests. | was very grateful for this attention to detail. It would save me a lot of time, surely.
| had memorized a good chunk of the names and numbers, but | studied it again anyway to make sure | hadn’t gotten anything wrong.
| took a moment to gather myself, and after | took a few deep breaths, | touched my golden eagle necklace. | could do this. | had to do this,
Once | was feeling calm, | carefully crossed the room and then opened the door. | waited to make sure Finnick and Erika hadn’t heard me, and once | was sure, | closed the door quietly behind me.
The corridor was darker than I'd expected, and | hadn’t thought to bring lights with me. | supposed | didn’t need them really. Something about the darkness weirdly made me feel safe. | had once feared the shadows, back when | was alone in Rosepetal, waiting for Asher to return every night. Back then, darkness had meant endless waiting. And after the inferno, when | was severely burned, all | could sense was darkness.
| had been blind for a time after that dreaded fire. It had been absolutely terrifying to not be able to see at first, but after a while, | felt safer in the darkness. | had been afraid of any brightness and fire for years.
Thinking of my blindness reminded me of Emmett, the man | had once believed was a hero. Everything was so different now. | had no idea who Emmett was. | didn’t even know who | was.
Was | Cassandra? Cassandra was a fake identity, of course... so was | really Cora? I shook

head at the notion. Cora had died, her family had vanished, and her wolf had gone My world had been crushed and rebuilt and then crushed again.
| felt lonely, weak. Yet, | had to move on, by instinct. Even though my wolf was gone, her instinct remained in my blood, the instinct to win and survive.
Before | could get too lost in my thoughts, | heard a slight noise from upstairs. A crack of the wooden staircase beyond me. | was on the landing, and my heart stopped beating for a moment.
| looked up and saw nothing. Whoever was there walked in the darkness as | did.
Was someone sneaking around like | was? Who was it? An assassin?
| didn’t dare to move anymore and tried to hold my breath as my eyes darted around, but my heart bumped drastically fast in my chest. It was so noisy that | was afraid the stranger in the darkness

could hear it.
| wanted to run and go back to my room. | had been prepared to kill someone if need be, but as | stood here on the landing, | felt complicated about the idea.
Could | truly take someone’s life even if | was in danger? Could | allow that on my conscience?
| knew it was wise to run and go back to your nest when you couldn’t identify your enemy in the darkness. | supposed | could sneak back out later and try again once the stranger had concluded whatever business they were up to.
So, | took a short breath, made up my mind, and then turned to leave. | tried to creep slowly and placed my feet gently on the staircase, but the wooden floor had other ideas.
The stair beneath me creaked loudly and panic flooded through me.
Just as | decided to run, someone cupped my mouth from behind. | wasn’t able to scream, nor was | able to run. | knew that | was done for, but before | could lose myself in fear, | heard a familiar voice and froze completely.
“Cassandra, it's me.” | nearly fainted from surprise.
It was Asher.
Chapter 269
I stopped struggling and widened my eyes as my heart stopped in my
chest.
Asher’s voice sounded coarse and more tense than I’d ever heard it, but I knew at once that it was him.
It was almost impossible to believe, but it was true.
Asher was here in Yurene.
My mate was here in this cold, terrible country.
He turned around to face me, and though we couldn’t see each other in this darkness, the scent, the warmth of his body… everything was so familiar it couldn’t be ignored.
After a moment of silence, I felt Asher’s finger brush across my cheeks. I hadn’t realized I was crying until I felt the wetness of my tears against my skin.
When he pulled me into a tight hug, he whispered in my ear.
and kissed my neck “I’ve missed you so much, Cassandra,” he said, and then he pulled away and then my lips. Then he reached for my hand and began to kiss each of my fingers devoutly.
“I couldn’t bear not seeing you,” he whispered in between kisses. “I’ve missed you so much.”
As his lips danced against my skin, I managed to stop the steady stream of tears and calm down. I wanted to let him kiss me forever, but I remembered that we were in the middle of the stairs and
couldn’t afford to get caught.
“It isn’t safe here,” I said as my eyes darted around. “The maids could appear at any time. We need to find somewhere to go-”
“I have a room on the fourth floor,” he interrupted, and without another word, he grabbed my hand and led the way.
We walked in darkness, our hands clenched together tightly. I remember when we were young, we had always been like this. We would take each other’s hands and walk together when we were deep in the forest and felt afraid. We were each other’s solace, and tonight
was no exception.
He led me to the end of the corridor and then rooted around and retrieved a key. He unlocked the door, and much to my surprise, the room was nearly pitch–black.
When we entered and he locked the door behind us, he explained that he had turned off the light before he’d left to wander the corridors, pretending to be asleep so no one could disturb him.
Before I could say anything more,, Asher cornered me against the door and began to kiss me. My heart pounded as surprise overtook me. I hadn’t expected this by any means, but I wasn’t protesting at all. As his body pressed against mine with carnal need, his warm, masculine scent filled my nose,
and my body erupted into shivers.
Our kisses went from sweet to utterly passionate, and as his hands wrapped around me, I couldn’t help but whimper and moan. My entire body ached and yearned for him. I needed Asher as much as I needed oxygen, and I vowed to show him just how much I desired him.
While the darkness made my eyes ache a little as they strained to make sense of our surroundings, it made my other senses clearer. As his hands traveled down my sides and then rested on my hips, I began to tremble. His large hands grasped onto me firmly, and after a moment, his fingers darted underneath my blouse and then eased it up over my head. It dropped to the floor, leaving me standing there in just my bra.
The rest of my clothes soon followed, and I shivered in anticipation as he undressed me. He took his time and care, and with every garment removed, my heart raced faster and faster. His fingertips danced over every inch of my skin, and when his hands raised to cup my breasts, a moan of delight escaped me.
“Oh, Asher,” I breathed, and when he gently squeezed, I gasped. I hadn’t been touched this way in so long. It was all I’d dreamed of since our last encounter together, only this moment felt even more intense than it had in my dreams. Asher had always been a generous lover and tonight was no exception.
His clothes fell away soon after, and once they were gone, Asher led me to the bed and we coupled the way we had when we were young. Our lovemaking was tender and passionate, and once we had reached the height of our pleasure, we took a moment to catch our breath, and then cuddled up against each other.
la E.
a little, but after we started to talk, Asher leaned over and turned on the bedside The light was so dim that only our faces were illuminated, and when I finally got to see the familiar beauty of his gray eyes, my lips curled into a smile. I traced his jaw with my fingers.
“Asher,” I sighed. “Oh, Asher, how did you even get here in the first place?”
He smiled at me and then kissed my knuckles. “I used a disguise, my love. I was only able to be here because I used someone else’s name. Most people here have never seen me before, so all I had to do was don some dark clothes, and a cape… they could tell I was Southern from my accent, but other than that, I wasn’t detected.”
“Whose name did you use?” I wondered.
“T
got help from the Sky Pride Pack,” he explained. “I used the name of their hand of the Alpha.”
“How did you manage to do that?” I wondered as I tried to understand. “I’ve been so worried, Asher. When I heard you were missing and that Oliver Moses took control of Wegalla in your absence… I’ve been so frightened.”
“I’m so sorry about that,” he said, and he rubbed my cheek. “It’s a long story, and I don’t want to waste our precious time on this. I want to know how you’re doing. I’ve been missing you every day since you’ve been gone. Have you been okay?”
My eyes dropped from his as a sigh escaped me. “It’s complicated. I don’t even know where to start.”
“Try,” he urged me.
I took a moment to gather myself and then told him about what Kaleb was planning. I shared the cruel traditions of the country, and what I’d seen in the prison tower, and speculated that Kaleb wanted to use sorcery to control people’s minds and form a huge army. I told him I had wanted to find someone who could bring this message back to Rayden and Becky because they needed to know how horrible the disease was so they could take precautions.
Asher listened in silence as I spoke, but after a while, he seemed distracted. As I talked about the disease, he played with my long hair and stroked my bare shoulder. I could tell that something was on his mind, but I wasn’t sure what was going on.
I stopped speaking and drew the blanket up higher so we couldn’t be too distracted.
“Asher, is something wrong?” I wondered. “You seem a million miles away.”
He stared at me for a moment and then placed another kiss on my lips. He didn’t answer my question and asked one of his own instead.
“Is there anything else you want to tell me?” he asked quietly.
Chapter 270
Confusion flooded my mind and my lips parted as I stared at Asher. I felt lost, and I kept waiting for the Alpha King to say something more for clarification, but instead, he simply
stared at me.
For a moment, he reminded me of Finnick. The two looked so much alike and this expression was no exception. Sometimes, Finnick would stare at me in the same way if I forgot something I had promised like he was a puppy who had been wronged by his owner. It was a vulnerable look I’d never expected to see on an adult man’s face, and the mere sight of it made my heart hurt.
“What do you mean?” I asked him directly after another moment of silence.
Asher’s dark eyebrows creased together and then he let out a soft sigh.
“I heard that you are about to marry the king of Yurene,” he revealed. “That you two are engaged to one another. Is that true?”
A lump formed in my throat and
my eyes
widened.
How had Asher found out about this? Kaleb had promised to not let him know. It was one of the requirements of our agreement, and he’d violated it somehow.
My cheeks suddenly began to burn as heat surged through my body. Though I had done nothing wrong, I still felt embarrassed. This was something I’d never wanted Asher to find out about, and from his large–eyed stare, I knew my fears had been valid.
“It’s true,” I admitted, but I kept speaking before his mouth could open. “But it’s nothing more than a strategy, Asher. Kaleb wants to use me to achieve some great sorcery, and I, on the other hand, need him to provide antidotes for Wild Crawler. I have no intentions to marry him. I just need to bide my time until the antidotes are ensured, and then I’ll find a way to break it off.”
I took a step closer and stared deeply into his eyes. “You’re the only man I’d ever want to marry, Asher,”
Asher’s expression softened and then he nodded,
“I never doubted it for a moment,” he assured me and then reached out and took
my hands
in his. “I was just afraid that Kaleb had forced you into this and was scared for you, Cassandra.”
“How did you find out about our engagement?” I wondered. “The news wasn’t supposed to leave Vlokwell.”
“We caught a sorceress named Roxy out in the woods,” he explained. “She tried to attack us, but we stopped her before she could cause too much damage. She said she was from Vlokwell-”
“Roxy?” I gasped, and my voice caught in my chest. That’s why I hadn’t seen Roxy in quite some time. Had Kaleb sent her to kill Asher?
A chill ran down my spine. I shouldn’t have trusted him for a single moment. All of the promises he’d made to me had been lies.
“Do you know her?” Asher wondered as his eyebrows creased together.
I nodded. “She’s the lead of Kaleb’s soldiers and the sister of Raven, another sorceress who’s in charge of medical research. She’s an important figure here in Vlokwell.”
As I considered all of this new information, I felt alarmed. Asher had mentioned an attack. Had Roxy managed to hurt him? The very thought made my stomach twist in knots and before I could stop myself, I asked Asher out loud if he was alright.
He nodded and offered me a reassuring smile. “I’m fine. Thanks to Kane’s plan, I came out unhurt and we were able to get Roxy under control. In fact, if it weren’t for her, we wouldn’t have figured out a lot of things and I wouldn’t have gotten here.”
I frowned. “Kane’s plan?”
I was completely confused. Kane was supposed to be back in Anemond, or at least that’s what I’d asked him to do when I’d left for Yurene.
“It’s a story for another time,” Asher said vaguely. “But Kane’s been with me since I left Anemond.”
“And
Shere is Roxy?” I wondered.
“She’s still with Kane in the Sky Pride Pack,” he answered. “He’s perfectly fine and safe but something terrible happened before my departure. Silas was attacked by someone who tried to take Roxy back with him. He must have been her accomplice or something. From what she explained, he was a skillful killer, but he died in the fight with Silas and the other
Skillful killer?
I knew at once that had to be Anubis, the suspicious man with the dark eyes and vile smile.
If I was correct, that meant that Kaleb had lost two of his trusted assistants. And Raven didn’t seem to be very loyal to him. This could be a chance to break him, could it? Though I didn’t trust him much either, I could indicate this to Ronald. If Kaleb was busy with his own troubles, he wouldn’t be able to interfere with the South’s business.
But this needed to be done after I got the antidotes. I couldn’t risk losing the medication needed to cure the ailing people in Wegalla, not when I’d endured this for so long already.
Suddenly, Asher took my chin and raised it, causing me to meet his eyes.
“Cassandra, I’m here to take you away from Yurene,” he explained softly.
I was stunned. What did he mean by that? We couldn’t leave just like that. What about the plots that Kaleb was planning to overthrow Wegalla? What about Oliver Moses, who wanted to use this opportunity to usurp the throne?
I didn’t understand.
How could we throw this all away?
Asher moved the lamp toward him and raised his chin, exposing his neck. Though it was covered with heavy makeup, I could still see the blackness underneath. The dark marks of his disease had traveled nearly up to his chin.
“The disease has developed quickly recently,” he said quietly. “There was one point where I was unable to move my body, it was so bad.”
I suddenly felt disoriented and on the verge of tears.
What did that mean? How could that happen?
He drew me close and stroked my hair. “Don’t cry. I didn’t tell you this to upset you. I just… Cassandra, I don’t know how long I’m going to make it. I’m afraid… I’m afraid of losing the opportunity to spend my last days with the ones I love. If I were to draw my last breath without you…”
As his voice trailed off, I shook my head firmly and stopped him.
“No,” I said as my tears fell down my cheeks. “No, Asher. I won’t allow the disease to take you away from me. No one can take you away from me. Never again.”
I planted a firm kiss on his lips and pressed against him so tightly I could hear his heart beating against my chest. A thousand emotions flooded through me, but above all, I was feeling determined.
When we pulled away, I stared deeply into Asher’s eyes and suddenly, a thought crossed my mind. Perhaps all wasn’t lost at all.
“I think I know someone who could cure you,” I revealed. “Someone here in Vlokwell.”
