Chapter 361: Reiner - Two is Better than One

Reiner seemed deep in thought for a brief moment before he sighed loudly.

“That’s what I’ve figured out as well. The harder part is how to solve it,” Reiner muttered as he frowned as if deep in thought.

“Something like making sure that people are put into the right teams with other people that are compatible to them?” I suggested, based on what Charles had told me.

“Not bad. And how should we start doing that?” Reiner asked as he looked pointedly at me.

“Umm...the agent’s profile?” I guessed.

“Correct,” Reiner said as he turned to gesture to the large pile of document with a swipe of his hand.

Great. We’re going to have to go through that?!

“Isn’t there like an electronic form for the agent’s profile. I mean, in this digital day and age...” I asked, hopefully.

It would be faster if we have everything in digital form, then processing the data, finding trends, or arranging everything would just be so much easier.

Reiner shook his head at me with a regretful look on his face. My mouth hung even wider open at the work cut out for us. If rummaging through physical paper was the only way to do this, then I wasn’t surprised why Reiner seemed so busy and why he had been working until late at night at the office. This work is not a piece of cake at all.

“Are you serious?” I whispered in disbelief.

“Newer data are in the digital database, but profiles of older agents are all on paper,” Reiner replied.

“Umm...I have a suggestion,” I mumbled.

“Out with it,” Reiner said as he leaned back against the back of his large chair.

“Let’s input the data that we need into a computer and then we can process it from there. It’ll take time upfront to input all the data but after that it’ll be easier for us to sift through and analyze it for trends,” I suggested.

“I don’t think it’s a bad idea but...how long will it take to input all of this data in?” Reiner asked.

“Can we go with a sample of people first? Maybe like a couple of teams or groups of people just so we can figure out how to analyze the data. If looking for trends this way is useful, we can input more data into the system,” I recommended.

“Ok...” Reiner readily agreed.

He’s listening to me more and more now. It was a great thing, but I also found it surprising. Regardless, it was a blessing that we could work together. Finally.

“I’ll do it. The first lot of inputs, I’ll do it,” I stated firmly.

“You will?” Reiner asked in surprised.

Honestly, I couldn’t quite understand why he was so surprised at my suggestion.

“Of course, I will. Who else will do it? I’m your secretary...so...” I replied.

Before Reiner could say anything, I took out my phone and sent a short message to Kat telling her that I can’t help her out at the bar today. I prayed that it wouldn’t be a busy night at the bar because I couldn’t go in to help out with the work that I’ve just carved out for myself. If I’m lucky, I’ll probably be done at around 3AM to get a big enough sample size. If I’m unlucky, then I’ll probably be here till morning.

“How long will this take?” Reiner inquired as looked sternly at me.

“Umm...3AM if I’m lucky? Morning if I’m not so lucky...?” I replied with my rough estimates.

“That’s the estimate time for one person, right? What about for two people?” Reiner asked.

He’s not thinking...

“No. There’s no need for you to do this. I can do it. It’s not a problem,” I quickly halted his train of thought.

“It’ll be faster if I help you split the work, right?” Reiner said.

“Like I just said, you don’t have to do this,” I replied, a little stubbornly.

Reiner got up from his seat and completely ignored my protests. He headed for the pile of documents before scooping around half of them into his arms and placing them next to his computer. He’s really going to do this...

“How should we do this?” he asked.

I guess I don’t have a choice because he isn’t going to listen to me after all.

“Umm...I’ll set up an excel with all the fields online and then I’ll grant you access and then we can start keying in the data. Honestly, though, I think it’s better if we get some other secretaries to help out,” I said.

“No need. I can do this,” Reiner replied decisively.

“Well...if you say so,” I muttered under my breath, but I was sure that he heard me.

“I have to drive you home anyways or Queen’s going to get mad,” Reiner said before grinning at me.

“I guess you’re right about that...” I replied with a small laugh.

“Let’s get to it,” Reiner said enthusiastically.

It felt like I didn’t have another choice and he wasn’t willing to listen to my protests. In the end, we ended up working together to input the data into our computers. However, since it was two of us working on it instead of me alone, we managed to cover more data points than I had initially planned, and we finished much faster than 3AM.

“My eyes hurt, and my back is sore...I feel like I’ve aged more than ten years...” I complained while stretching after we had wrapped up for the day. Well, more like for the night.

Glancing at the clock on the wall, it was a little past midnight. Much better than the estimated time of 3AM in my lucky scenario.

“Ready to head back home?” Reiner asked.

“Definitely,” I replied before smiling a little proudly at him.

We managed to cover a lot of ground today. With all the data inputted, we can start analyzing it first time tomorrow morning. While we walked together to the car, I felt like for the first time I was enjoying my job here.

Chapter 362: Reiner - While She was Sleeping

For the first time, I felt useful, and I was doing some real work. On top of that, if I can help Reiner figure this out, we would be saving lives. Just like he had said when I first asked him what he was working on. He was right, we would be saving lives.

I felt dead tired when I got into the car and Reiner started driving us home. Despite my exhaustion, I felt very satisfied with how the day had progressed. If only tomorrow would be like this as well, then life wouldn’t feel so hard. I glanced over at Reiner and saw him paying attention to the road ahead. He didn’t seem so tired at all. I hoped that the effort that we’ve put in today will prevent him from spending late nights working alone at the office.

“See, I can be pretty helpful, right? I’m not completely useless...” I spoke up cheerfully.

My voice disturbed the silence in the car and Reiner glanced over at me before a small smile curved his beautiful lips. It’s been a long while since I’ve seen him smile and it felt like a lifetime ago since he last smiled because of me.

“Yea yea...” he muttered but the smile did not disappear from his lips.

His smile made me smile. It was the best reward that I could have ever wished for at the end of a long and tiring day.

“Now that we have the sample data, tomorrow we can analyze it to see if there are trends of any link of causation...” I said thoughtfully.

“You’re right,” Reiner agreed.

“This work is going to be tough, but I bet it’s going to be fun as well...” I said softly.

“It won’t be easy but we should be able to manage...” Reiner replied casually.

“Let’s work to save lives together! Haha...sounds like we’re superheroes of something,” I said before laughing.

Silence settled in again. Natalia had been silent for a while now and after glancing over at her, Reiner wasn’t surprised to see that she had drifted off to sleep. She must have been tired after all the work that she’d done for the day. It was a short drive away before they reached the mansion and Reiner decided to let Natalia enjoy her rest peacefully.

The guards saluted to him when they saw his usual car arrive back at the mansion before opening the automatic gates. Reiner quickly parked the car before silently slipping out without waking up Natalia. Natalia was still fast asleep, and he didn’t want to do anything to wake her up. It would be great if he could get her to her bedroom without disturbing her rest.

As gently as possible, he opened the car’s door on her side. He kept his eyes on her face to see if she stirred in her sleep. Thankfully, she didn’t. Reaching over, he unbuckled her seatbelt and slowly disengaged it from around her body. All the while he watched her and was careful not to wake her up. Natalia seemed to be in a deep sleep and that was probably due to her exhaustion.

Carefully, he placed his arm under her back and her knees before lifting her up into his arms with ease. He wasn’t sure if it was his imagination or if she had lost weight. As he carried her towards the mansion’s entrance, he was convinced that she felt lighter in his arms than she used to and that wasn’t a good sign. He looked down at her sleeping face and wondered why she was trying so hard. Life out here on this island was tough and probably too difficult for a girl like her.

Most men that ended up here weren’t normal and the jobs that they took on were not normal as well. Although an economy has sprung up around the business community and King’s mercenary company, it wasn’t a standard economy like other countries. Basically, it was shady and filled with shady people. Despite all that she had chosen to say, and he felt like it was his fault that she had dragged herself out here. Reiner sighed softly. No matter what he said or did, it didn’t seem like Natalia was willing to change her mind.

Reiner was too wrapped up in his depressing thoughts to realize that someone was waiting for them at the entrance of the mansion. He looked up and saw his mother standing there as if she had been waiting for them to arrive back all along. He sighed again, knowing well that she was here to meddle with his life. All he wanted was to put Natalia to bed so that she could get a goodnight’s rest and be cheerful and happy the next day.

“I told you to drive her back, I didn’t know that that came along with a carry-her-to-her-room service,” Queen teased.

“Shhh...” Reiner hissed softly as he gestured with his eyes at Natalia who was sleeping in his arms.

Queen nodded and covered her mouth with her hand playfully. Reiner narrowed his eyes at her disapprovingly.

“What do you want?” he asked, barely above a whisper.

“Nothing. That’s not how you’re supposed to talk to your dear mother now is it?” Queen whispered back teasingly.

“She fell asleep in the car. I’m taking her back to her room,” Reiner explained plainly.

“Sure. Kiss her goodnight for me too, will you?” Queen said suggestively before she blew a kiss at her only son.

Reiner frowned at his mother and Queen smiled before turning on her heels and walking way into the mansion. Reiner looked down at Natalia and felt relieved that she was still asleep. He walked towards her room in the opposite direction from where Queen had headed.

Gently, Reiner placed Natalia on her bed. He winced a little when Natalia seemed to stir as her back hit the softness of the bed’s mattress. Slowly, he eased his arm from under her body. Thankfully, Natalia stirred but did not wake up. It seemed like his mission of sending her to bed was a success.

Chapter 363: Reiner - His Gentle and Caring Side

I wasn’t sure if my exhaustion from working long hours was worst or the pain in my arm was worst. From my experience, something sore like this would probably worsen overnight and I would wake up with very sore arms tomorrow morning.

“You shouldn’t have carried those documents...” Reiner muttered.

“I thought you wanted me to...” I whispered as I averted my gaze.

“This is why I keep telling you not to bite off more than you can chew. Stop trying to work so hard,” Reiner complained.

“What is that supposed to mean? I want to work too. I want to be useful...” I said desperately.

“Let me see...” Reiner said as he reached for my arm.

I watched silently as he focused on rolling up the long sleeve of my shirt. Slowly, my arms became exposed, and I could feel his eyes on my skin. “I guess you’re right. I’ll be more careful from now on...” I replied obediently.

“Wait here. I’ll grab some muscles relaxant gel...” Reiner said as he stood up from the bed.
