Chapter 471: Reiner - Rewards from Reiner

We just got married...if he had already forgotten? Someone’s in a rush to become a grandfather...

“We haven’t really talked about that...so...I’m not sure if Knight wants to have children,” I replied a little hesitantly.

Surely, I felt like I was skating on very thin ice right now.

“It doesn’t matter if he wants to or not. It’s his responsibility to have children. That’s all,” King stated as he brushed off my concern completely.

His responsibility? Why am I still surprised...?

“Well...” I murmured.

“What about you? Do you want to have Knight’s children?” King asked, getting right to the point.

Knight’s children. Not just anyone’s children...not our children...not my children...but ‘Knight’s children’. His choice of words didn’t slip by my mind at all. If it didn’t matter whether Reiner wanted children or not, I guessed it didn’t matter to him whether I wanted to have children or not either. This was simply a trick question with only two answers and that was ‘yes and yes’.

I thought of Reiner’s beautiful red hair, his clear blue eyes and how he smiled at me, and I had to say that I wouldn’t mind having a little boy who would inherit exactly those features. Hopefully, the boy would speak and express himself more straightforwardly. Well, maybe he could inherit that from me instead. Without knowing it, I had probably spent many moments in my waking life daydreaming about our future children and what they would look or be like. Of course, I wanted to have Reiner’s children. Not just one but a bunch of them...

“Yes, I want to have his children. If he wants them...then of course...” I replied before ending with a smile.

“If you want children then I guess I can rest assured. That is more than half the battle won,” King said with a nod.

“How so...?” I asked, unable to hold back my curiosity.

“You can always convince your husband, or can’t you?” King asked as he arched an eyebrow questioningly at me.

“I guess...” I replied.

Actually, I could really see myself begging Reiner to make babies with me. It was a funny thought...

“Good. I’ll connect up with Knight on when I can expect my first grandchild to be born,” King said with a nod of satisfaction.

I could basically see in my mind an image of King ticking off his to-do list in a proud way. Grandchild coming right up...was what I wished I could say. In reality, it probably wasn’t going to be that simple. Sensing that the conversation was over, I quickly excused myself before heading out of the auditorium.

“I survived...wow...” I muttered under my breath as I leaned back against the closed door of the auditorium.

“Was it that bad?”

I turned to see Reiner leaning against a wall casually and realized that he must have waited all this time for me.

“It...wasn’t...” I managed to reply before I showed him one of my best smiles.

The distance between us disappeared in a blink of an eye and suddenly Reiner was standing right in front of me. He moved so fast that by the time that I lifted my face to gaze up into his face, his lips were already crushing down on mine. We were in the office building and standing right in a very public hallway where anyone could walk past us at any time but that didn’t stop me from kissing him back with urgency.

The feel of his lips on mine and his tongue dipping teasingly into the depth of my mouth was the best reward that I could have ever asked for.

...

I did mention that the very daring and passionate kiss in the hallway was the best reward but that wasn’t the only reward that Reiner decided to shower upon me for surviving the presentation and the one-on-one conversation with his father. Reiner invited me out to a very romantic dinner which I thought was more than slightly over-the-top.

The dinner venue on the cruise was so lavishly decorated that I felt quite underdressed and out of place in my standard office attire. While all the woman there were dressed to hunt for their prey for the night, I was dressed in a black suit with matching skirt. My make-up and hair weren’t much to look at either. I was busy staring at the other women and men who were seated around us that I didn’t notice Reiner’s eyes on me until he spoke up.

“Why are you so focused on other people when your husband is sitting right in front of you?” he asked as he showed me a bored and slightly annoyed face.

Unlike me, Reiner had probably kept his eyes on me all along. How cute...

“No one looks any better than my husband, don’t worry. I chose your purely based on your looks...” I replied back teasingly.

“Makes sense...” Reiner replied confidently as he decided to go along with my joke.

I laughed a little at him as I continued studying the menu that was in my hand. After placing our orders, the real conversation started.

“So, what did King say to you? He didn’t ask you to stay behind just to compliment you on your presentation skills, right?” Reiner asked knowingly.

Of course, King had things that he wanted to say.

“He did offer me some compliments. Give me some credit...” I muttered before I pouted playfully at him.

“He did? You should feel very proud of yourself. It’s rare for King to compliment anyone. I apologize for my father. He’s very strict and authoritative but he’s not a bad guy...” Reiner said, and he seemed quite surprised.

“There’s nothing for you to apologize for and I’m sure that your father is a great guy. I just...have to get used to him...I guess...” I replied while trying to look on the bright side.

“Don’t worry. I’m very sure that he’ll end up liking you if he doesn’t already,” Reiner said with confidence.

“Really? What makes you so sure?” I asked.

“Hmm...because I like you...” Reiner replied before he flashed me a very attractive smile.

I found myself blushing a little at his words. Hopefully things will work out for us and for our family in the future.

Chapter 472: Reiner - Unwanted

“Honestly, I was very surprised when he told me that he respects your decision...in choosing me as your wife and all that...” I told him a little shyly.

“What else did he say?” Reiner prompted further as if he had anticipated that part already.

“Well...he asked me about what I wanted to do to contribute to the company because I am now part of the family. I have to say that that made me feel very happy,” I admitted gleefully.

“What did you tell him?” Reiner inquired further.

“I told him that I’m willing to do anything which is quite true. I’m not picky. I’ll do whatever job that he throws at me,” I said perhaps a little too confidently.

Reiner shot me a strange look before he shook his head in disbelief.

“You say that because you have no idea what kind of things, he can throw your way...” Reiner said before rolling his eyes at me.

Well, I guessed I hadn’t thought that far ahead.

“What else?” Reiner asked again.

This part was the hardest to tell Reiner. How should I put the ‘baby’ part of the conversation without making it sound weird?

“King asked if I wanted to have your children...” I said softly without meeting his eyes.

I wondered how Reiner felt about that. Does he want to have children? Maybe not now...but someday...

“And you said?” Reiner asked.

Apart from that, he didn’t show any other reaction to my words at all. I guess this topic didn’t come as a surprise to him either considering the many conversations that he must have had with his father about this. King seemed impatient for Reiner to get married and produce an heir and that had been obvious to me since the first day that I landed on this island.

Should I just come out and tell Reiner straight that I want to have his child? Doesn’t that just sound a little on the crazy side and very desperate. But I’m his wife now...does that make it ok for me to say it?

“I told him that I do...I want to have your children...” I replied honestly.

When I glanced over at Reiner’s face, he seemed deeper in thought that happy or surprised at my decision.

“I see. Then that shouldn’t be a problem,” he said after a brief moment of silence.

That’s it?

Although I wasn’t sure what kind of reaction I had been expecting, his lack of any reaction was surely a disappointment. What does he even mean when he said that it ‘shouldn’t be a problem’?

“R...umm...do you want to have children?” I asked in a small voice.

Now that we have broached this difficult topic, I didn’t want to back down before I knew how he felt about it. Surely this was something that we should have discussed before getting married but when he proposed to me so suddenly, I didn’t exactly have the time to pause and ask him if he wanted children or not.

“No. I don’t want to have them,” he replied casually like he had always had this answer ready.

Huh?!

‘If you want children then I guess I can rest assured...you can always convince your husband, or can’t you?’

King’s words came flooding back into my mind like huge and high tsunami waves. Did he know that Reiner didn’t want children? Why did that old man not tell me anything about this?!

I see...so it’s my job to convince Reiner to make babies with me? Seriously?!

“Umm...why don’t you want to have kids?” I asked.

The first step to solving a problem is to identify and understand the root cause, right?

“I can’t really see myself as a father and I couldn’t be bothered in raising them. I don’t understand why people want to have children in the first place,” he said passively.

“I see...” I mumbled.

“Why do you want to have children?” he asked suddenly.

“Well, I just think that having a family would be nice...you know. We can spend time as a family and have fun together. I’ve always thought that it would be great to have children that resemble you...or a mix of you and me...” I replied before smiling sweetly at him.

He might not share my thoughts and feelings today but I’m sure that one day, Reiner would want to have children too. That is, if I work hard enough to convince him.

“So, you want to experiment to see how our DNAs combine to make a new human being? Just so you can see what it would look like?” Reiner asked as he stared at me in confusion.

Why does he make it sound like some unethical scientific experiment?

I was starting to get a strong sense that our journey to building a family of our own would be a long and extremely winding one. Now that I’ve married him, another challenge had presented itself. Why do I feel tired all of a sudden?

“Umm...that’s not really want I meant. Earlier, when you asked me if I wanted children and I said yes, you said that it shouldn’t be a problem. What did you mean?” I asked, clearly confused.

If he didn’t want children, then isn’t that already a problem?

“As long as you want children, we’ll have children. In fact, we can have as many as you want,” Reiner stated matter-of-factly.

“But you just said that you don’t want children...” I said, still very confused.

“It doesn’t matter what I want. We’ll have children if you’re ok with it regardless of whether or not I want them,” Reiner replied so casually that it started to hurt.

“What...?” I whispered, not quite sure if I heard him correctly just now.

What does that even mean? He’ll have children that he doesn’t even want?

“It’s as I just said. If you want to have my children, I’ll give you children. I’m fine with having children even if I don’t want to have them,” Reiner tried to explain.

“Is it because...it’s your ‘responsibility’?” I asked suspiciously.

Chapter 473: Reiner – Plague by Trouble

“Correct. I guess King did tell you about it. Our sons and maybe our daughters will be trained into soldiers and agents. Then the strongest will take over and run the company after me,” Reiner confirmed with a firm nod of his head.

“And you’re ok with that?” I asked as I narrowed my eyes at him.

“Of course not, that’s why I said that I don’t want to have children. With my personal preferences aside, if we end up having children, that is exactly what is going to happen to them,” Reiner said with utmost certainty.

“No...” I whispered so softly that I barely heard myself.

“Yes, your son will grow up and he’ll be trained to fight and kill. Just like I was...” Reiner affirmed bluntly.

“No...” I mumbled. It can’t be...

There’s got to be another way.

“That’s the way things are here and in our family. There’s no rush, though. No matter how much King pressures you, you don’t need to hurry. You’re still young, we can talk about this again in a few years’ time if you’re still interested...” Reiner said quite carefreely like it didn’t concern him at all.

“That can’t be...” I murmured, still shocked and partly in denial.

Just when I thought that I have found the perfect man and we were about to start a perfect family.

“So, do you still want to have my children?” Reiner asked as he stared directly at me from across the table.

Unfortunately, I could no longer give him a straight answer. Reiner chuckled softly as he shook his head and smirked a little my way. That dinner tasted like sand in my mouth. I couldn’t taste anything and had difficulty swallowing my food. Everything that I ate left a rotten taste in my mouth.

...

The morning after, I woke up with even larger and darker circles around my eyes. Last night was worse than the night before the big presentation to King. Being stressed about work paled in comparison with stress from relationship problems. The worst part was that I couldn’t complain about the issue to Reiner and that meant that he couldn’t comfort me to put me to sleep.

After faking my sleep while I waited for Reiner to fall asleep, I spent the entire night laying still on the bed with my eyes opened in the dark as my mind replayed the conversation that we had over dinner over and over in an endless loop. Each time I heard Reiner tell me that he didn’t want children but he was willing to have them, I felt like a small part of me died a little on the inside.

Are we going to end up having children because I wanted them, and he thought that he might as well have them because he had the ‘responsibility’ to have them?

What were you working on until lately, Natalia?

That’s right. Improving agents’ survival rate and success rate on missions. That meant that agents got hurt and killed, right? You’ve seen the statistics. Those agents had parents, right?

You could be one of them. Your children could be one of those agents who lost their lives during these missions. They could get wounded, worst, they could die...

What am I thinking? Before I knew it, my mind had taken me so far down a deep and dark hole that I wasn’t able to climb back up from. It was like I was going through a harsh nightmare although I was still awake. Just like any nightmare that I’ve had before, I couldn’t stop it, and this time, waking up wasn’t an option.

‘Yes, your son will grow up and he’ll be trained to fight and kill. Just like I was...’

Please stop saying things like that...

‘So, do you still want to have my children?’

No matter how hard I tired, I could still hear his voice and see his face when he said that. Suddenly, my head felt like it was spinning, and I started feeling very nauseous. Slowly, I got out of bed and headed for the bathroom. I felt so sick.

“Natalia...?”

I could hear Reiner calling my name softly and I could tell that he was standing right in front of the bathroom door. Reiner was such a light sleeper; I had never managed to get out of bed or do anything major without waking him up in the process.

“I’m fine. I...just needed to pee...” I lied and not so smoothly.

“Ok. Let me know if you need anything...” Reiner replied.

I heaved a silent sigh when I felt his presence retreat from the bathroom door and probably back to the bed. Can you just leave me to cry and be sick in peace, please?

...

What’s the best way to keep murky thoughts at bay? Work your ass off. That was exactly what I did for the days that followed our controversial conversation about having children. Reiner acted the same as always. If anything, he seemed more attentive to my wants and needs as we spent more time together both at home and at work.

Although the meeting that we had with King proceeded smoothly, things only got busier for us at work. Planning things on paper and implementing them were two very different things. Everything that seemed so simple on paper turned out to involve more steps that I had initially imagined. More time was required for tasks that I thought were simple, and as a result, we spent many long nights at the office.

Reiner never mentioned anything about having kids again since that day and I also didn’t want to bring it up either. The main reason that I wanted to steer clear of that topic was because I haven’t made up my mind about what I wanted. I could understand why Reiner was so conflicted about this because now that I had a better picture of what reality would be like for our future children, I also felt extremely conflicted.

Chapter 474: Reiner – Attachment

For now, better to just focus on getting our work done and enjoying my newly wedded life with Reiner. I wasn’t lying to myself; I knew that sooner or later we would have to deal with it and make some decisions. I had no idea how long we could avoid talking about it, but for now, I just wanted to enjoy life for a bit.

“It’s late. Let’s wrap up and go home,” Reiner suggested as he stood up from his desk.

“Ok, let’s do that,” I replied in agreement.

I quickly packed up my things and grabbed my handbag before heading for the door. Reiner already had the door open for me by the time that I arrived.

“Thank you,” I thanked him with a smile.

Reiner looked a little drained and I had to say that I felt and probably looked the same way if not worst. Working long hours was really starting to take a toll on my body and my looks. I should go get a makeover before I become an unattractive hag.

“I’m sorry for this...” Reiner said softly while we were riding the elevator down to the ground floor together.

“For what?” I asked in confusion.

I had no idea what he could possibly be apologizing for.

“All these late nights at work. I know we just got married and all we’re doing is work and more work...” Reiner said followed by a sigh.

My eyes widened as I stared at him while feeling a little surprised. I didn’t expect something like that to be bothering him. Perhaps all that nagging from Queen was finally getting to his head.

“It’s fine. We’re making some really good progress and I’m learning quite a lot of new things too,” I replied honestly.

“Maybe we should take a trip somewhere soon. Do you have any idea where you want to go?” Reiner asked.

“No idea. Thanks for thinking of me but with the level of energy that I have now, maybe we can do a day of sleeping in instead?” I suggested with a soft laugh.

“We can do that if you want but you should think about where we should go for our honeymoon trip,” Reiner replied without backing down.

A honeymoon trip...

“Sure. There’s no need to rush, though. You should rest too. You’ve been working hard and staying up late even at home behind my back,” I said as I narrowed my eyes at him.

“Ok...” Reiner replied vaguely, and I knew that he probably had no intentions of working any less than before.

When we got home, my suspicions were immediately confirmed when Reiner started confessing to me that he had to work even on this upcoming weekend.

“I have work this Saturday and I can’t take you with me,” Reiner said, sounding quite apologetic.

“That’s ok. I’ll find something to do with Queen or something. Don’t worry about me,” I replied with a smile.

“I’ll be gone since early in the morning, but I’ll try to come back as soon as possible, ok?” he said as he pulled me into his warm hug.

“Ok...” I whispered before burying my face into his chest.

“Let’s have dinner together when I get back,” Reiner suggested.

“Sure. This isn’t some dangerous work, right?” I asked just to make sure.

“Of course not. Some other managers just want to drag me along to inspect some new equipment deliveries,” he explained with a chuckle.

I was glad that I met Reiner when he wasn’t a roaring young man in his early twenties. Otherwise, he would probably be sent on dangerous missions all the time and each time I would go crazy just thinking about his safety. Thankfully, Reiner didn’t have to take on missions anymore and I guessed that King couldn’t afford to lose his only heir as well. That would ruin all his retirement plans.

“Doesn’t sound so interesting. I feel so sorry for you...” I said teasingly.

“Yeah. Staying home to bake or paint your nails would be more interesting and productive...” Reiner said while sounding very bored.

I couldn’t tell whether he meant it or if he was just joking but I found myself smiling and laughing along with him, nonetheless.

Since we’ve gotten married, we’ve always been together both at home and at work. This would probably be the first day during the weekend that Reiner wouldn’t be home. Despite the fact that I knew that we couldn’t always be glued together all the time, it still felt more than a little daunting knowing that Reiner won’t be with me on Saturday. Time to learn how to plant some roses or tend to the garden with Queen...

When I woke up on Saturday morning, the first thing I did instinctively was to reach my arm over to his side of the bed when I couldn’t feel the warmth of his embrace around my body. Feeling the bed empty next to me was hard on my heart and I squeezed my eyes closed even tighter because I didn’t want to deal with waking up without Reiner by my side. Suddenly, my eyes flew open, and I sat up in bed.

Get a grip, Natalia! He already told you that he needed to go out to work. Grow up...please...grow up...

I hate this. I hate this. I hate this.

Those words repeated itself in my mind as I headed for the bathroom for my morning routine of showering and dressing up for the day. The breakfast that was served tasted plain and was too greasy. Reiner wouldn’t make oily eggs like this because it’s supposed to be bad for my health...or something...

My phone was in my hand before I knew it and my fingers had begun dialing him. That was when I realized that I was going to give him a call. What am I doing!?

I quickly cancelled the call and dropped my phone down onto the table in front of me in my shock. Body dear, you shouldn’t move on your own like this. My mind knew that I should leave Reiner alone so that he could get some work done and get back soon in time for dinner as promised, but it was hard to handle a day without him and the day had just started.

Chapter 475: Reiner – His Ex-Fiancée

“Can you pass me that shovel over there?” Queen asked as she pointed with a finger towards what she wanted.

“Of course. Here you go...” I said as I passed her the shovel.

The sun was high in the sky and the wind felt pleasant against my face and hair. The weather was perfect for some gardening time with Queen. After going through breakfast, I met up with Queen who suggested that I join her in the garden. I felt thankful to her for finding something for me to fill my Reiner-free day. She taught me the names of the various species of roses that she had in her garden. Although I found the names beautiful and amazing, I only managed to remember a few of them.

“How are things with Knight?” Queen asked casually.

“Great. Everything is going well...” I replied without providing any more details.

It was true. Everything was going well except for one slight issue...

“I keep nagging Knight to take you on a honeymoon trip, but he seems so busy all the time,” Queen complained.

“It’s fine. We’re not in a rush. I think we can go on a trip whenever...” I replied truthfully.

“Really? I think after you’ve been married for a while, the trip just won’t feel like a honeymoon trip anymore...” Queen raised her concern.

“I’ll talk to Knight about it,” I replied with a smile.

I had other things on my mind right now that didn’t include a honeymoon trip anywhere. Since that day, Reiner never brought up the topic of having children again and that was probably because to him the discussion was over. He probably thought that I should be satisfied because he was willing to have children because I wanted them.

How can I get him to want to have children?

Is that something that I can get an answer to by searching online?

“You should drag Knight on a shopping spree to ease you stress sometimes, you know?” Queen suggested.

That was when I realized that I must have looked very stressed out to her as I wallowed in my worries. I wished that could talk to her openly about my issues, but I just wasn’t in the mood of involving anyone else right now.

“Excuse me, Miss Rachael is here...” a maid informed us after presenting a respectable bow.

“To see me?” Queen asked as she perked up.

The maid looked hesitant before her eyes travelled from Queen to land on me.

“She says that she’s here to see Miss Natalia,” the maid replied in a soft voice.

Rachael is here and she wants to see me?

Queen looked as shocked as I was feeling when she turned to give me a wide-eyed look. I had no idea why Rachael would want to see me but if she wanted to see me then, I’ll meet with her.

“Where is she now? I’ll go and meet her,” I replied.

“Do you want me to come along?” Queen quickly suggested, her voice and face full of concern.

“That’s ok. Don’t worry,” I replied reassuringly.

It wasn’t like she could kill me right in King’s mansion, right? That would be...quite extreme...

Queen hesitated a moment before she gave me an encouraging smile. I followed the maid as she led the way back towards the mansion. When I arrived at the guest living room, Rachael was seated in one of the sofas and she looked very comfortable and at home.

“Welcome. It’s good to see you again,” I said in greeting as I took the seat on the sofa opposite from her.

The maid quickly left us alone as if she could sense that all hell was about to break loose, and she didn’t want to be a part of it. I hated dealing with situations like this, but it wasn’t like I was bad at it. Unfortunately, I’ve had multiple experiences in dealing with situations like these.

“Sorry for vising you so suddenly. I assume that Knight isn’t home today?” she asked, although I knew that she already knew.

Why else did she have to turn up now of all times? I wanted to roll my eyes at her for treating me like a fool but instead I smiled.

“Your dress is very pretty,” I said as my eyes dropped to the sunflower patterned dress that she had on.

I had to say that the white of the fabric along with the yellow and brown sunflower pattern complimented her skin and hair very well. Not that I was that interested.

“Thank you,” she replied.

I let silence past between us because she was the one who wanted to see me. Therefore, it wasn’t my responsibility to insert in small talk to keep the conversation going. Frankly, I wasn’t in the mood for small talk either. She stared at me and I found myself staring back at her easily while I waited for her to open her mouth and say the words that she wanted to say. My heart and mind were already on welcoming Reiner back home, having dinner with him, and inviting him for a warm bath together before I beg him for some wild sex.

“Congratulations on your wedding, Natalia,” Rachael said with a smile that was most probably fake.

This just reminded me of how I congratulated Lucien and Angela on their wedding, although, I probably acted a lot more natural and convincing compared to what Rachael had on display right now. I guess that goes to show that she hasn’t been faking many things in her life and that was supposed to be a good thing. Plastering on a fake smile on your face wasn’t a skill that I recommended people to have unless absolutely necessary.

“Thank you very much. I am so thankful for Knight. He is such an amazing and loving husband,” I replied with additional details as a bonus.

Rachael flinched visibly. He’s good in bed too, I’ll tell you that if you asked. I smiled back warmly and wondered when she would get to the point. Since my conversation with Reiner the other day, I wondered if he’d had the chance to clear things up with this girl here.
