Ch. 571..580
*Blair*
Maddox slowly opened the door and glanced at the sleeping Austin.
"Is he asleep?" he asked through the mind link. I nodded, my gaze fixed on Austin's innocent face.
Maddox sighed and gestured for me to join him on the balcony. I followed his lead, stepping out into the cool night air as he gently slid the door open and closed it behind me.
"I can't believe Selena could do something like this," he said, voicing the thoughts that had been haunting us since her departure.
"It seems like something is off like we're missing some key points," I mumbled.
"That's true," he agreed. "Zander let Selena go too easily, and he didn't fight the Vampire as hard as he normally would. This isn't like him."
"It was shocking for me too, considering Selena's strong attachment to her son. She's not heartless to leave him alone for a vampire," I mused aloud, contemplating the situation.
"They both seemed compelled to act, as if under some invisible force," Maddox muttered, lost in thought.
"It seems you share my thoughts," I remarked, my eyes widening with realization.
"I believe the same. This could be the only explanation. But if it involves an external force, then the situation is grave, and I'm unsure if Zander is aware," Maddox sighed deeply. "He's refused to discuss Selena." "I need to reach out to Selena," I asserted, reaching for my phone..
"Wait! Now might not be the right time to contact her. If my suspicions are correct, Damon could be on high alert. It's not safe to make a move yet," he cautioned earnestly.
"But I can't leave her alone among those cunning vampires," I protested.
"Trust me, Blair. She is my Luna, and I feel duty-bound to her. But we need to wait for some time, let Damon and the vampires become overconfident and relaxed," he coaxed me.
"But Selena is alone there," I interjected, worry evident in my voice, shaken by the thought of her pain from being separated from her son.
"Don't worry, Blair. She'll be fine. She has her Wolf now, and we know she's the bravest and smartest hacker," Maddox smirked confidently.
"I know, Maddox, but I still want to find a way to contact her and know her situation," I insisted as I needed to know she was alright.
Selena came to our pack as my brother's mate and our Luna, but over the years, we had built a strong bond, and now I consider her as my sister. I truly felt more connected to her than my brother, maybe because she understood me and always
supported me without asking fometo
anything in return. She had proven herself time and again, earning my trast without question. She was there for me, holding many secrets close, while I couldn't divulge even the existence of Maddox, my mate, to anyone. In fact, she had become my best friend, and I felt it was my responsibility to support her and stand by her when she needed. Right now, my heart was anxious, and I knew something was not right. How could I leave her alone in this dangerous situation when she had no one else to rely on?
"I can find a way for you, Blair. But I suggest we trust Selena this time and refrain from contacting her. If this is truly a plan and she's taking a risk by living among vampires, we shouldn't escalate the danger," he reasoned. I knew he was right.
"You're right, Maddox. I was acting
on impulse. But... but I can't help it," I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper. "I feel like my family is falling apart." I sighed, feeling the weight of my words settle heavily upon me. Maddox wrapped his arms around me from behind, a
Comforting embrace that no
momentarily eased my troubled mind. His lips brushed against the sensitive skin of my nape, sending shivers down my spine.
"Blair, I'm here for you. You know that, right?" His voice, deep and resonant, washed over me like a soothing balm. I leaned into his embrace, finding solace in the warmth of his presence. His lips pressed against my cheek in a tender gesture of reassurance.
"Baby, your brother is my Alpha and
my best friend He's as important to me as he is to you. So don't worry. I won't let anything trouble my Alpha I'll find the missing piece and solve this mystery," he whispered, his words laced with determination and unwavering loyalty. And in that moment, wrapped in Maddox's embrace, I felt a glimmer of hope
amidst the chaos that threatened to
consume us.
"I know what my mate is capable of doing," I breathed out, completely in awe of him, as I turned into his arms to face him.
I had known him since my childhood, and he had always been my hero: the most powerful and invincible.
"Then you should know your mate wants you right now," he husked out, his hooded eyes full of hunger watching me.
I bit my lip as desire burned through my core.
"But..." I gestured to the sleeping Austin. "I can't leave him alone. He needs me."
"I know, baby," he sighed, cupping my face in his large hand, his eyes fixed on my lips. He lowered his head and captured my mouth in a hot, scorching kiss. I melted instantly, letting myself lose in his embrace. "Sweetheart, I want you to move into my room," he murmured against my lips.
I wanted to protest, but he seemed to anticipate my thoughts.
"Until the matter between Selena and Zander is resolved. Austin will stay with us," he declared. His kindness and understanding, so contrary to his rough exterior, warmed my heart.
I nodded, encircling my hand around his neck, and pulling him closer as I stood on my tiptoes to deepen the kiss. His hands slid under me, lifting me to meet his height.
"We have to stop, honey, or we won't be able to control ourselves," I sighed.
"Hmm, at least let me kiss you to my heart's content, my mate," he demanded, his intentions clear as his kisses continued unabated.
Chapter 572
Missing My Son And Mate *Selena*
I lost track of time as the night slipped away into dawn, the rising sun casting its gentle glow into the room. Exhaustion weighed heavily upon me, not just physically but mentally, leaving me unaware of its toll until the morning light began to filter through the curtains. My
first waking thoughts drifted to Austin and Zander, wondering how they were doing without me.
Everything happened in a blink, and I couldn't find the time to think or react... I couldn't think or react on my own. What was happening to me, and why was it all so confusing? I didn't want to be here but I couldn't deny coming here. What the actual fuck was about it? "I feel the same as you do, Selena," Arena's voice whispered in my mind.
"Why do I feel the mate bond with Damon while still marked by Zander?" I groaned. "Ah... this is so confusing."
As per normal norms, the mate bond with a fated mate faded if your chosen mate marked you. Rarely did werewolves accept a fated mate after bonding with a chosen mate, just like in the case of Maddox and Blair, where Emile, Maddox's mate, betrayed him. Consequently, the bond weakened, and Maddox could bond with Blair after rejecting Emile. However, in Zander and my scenario, neither of us wanted to reject each other, and yet the bond with Damon seemed stronger. Something strange was going on. "And we need to find out," Arena encouraged.
"Yes, I need to find out," I murmured unconsciously. I missed Austin and Zander. It was strange that despite feeling connected with Damon, I couldn't stop thinking about Zander and could feel the pain of our separation that he might be feeling. It seemed we were bound by our souls.
I surveyed the room, taking in its beige color scheme that extended to every corner, including the furniture and furnishings, all draped in various shades of off-white. A large queen-size bed dominated the center, accompanied by a dresser adorned with an array of cosmetic items.
Stepping towards the walk-in closet, I discovered a collection of luxurious clothing and dresses neatly arranged.
I exhaled softly as I approached the window, noting its considerable height above ground level. Below, vampire guards and soldiers patrolled diligently, their watchful eyes scanning the surroundings. The security measures appeared robust, extending as far as my vision could reach.
Closing the curtains, I turned towards the door. As it swung open, I found myself face to face with guards stationed just outside. It seemed Damon's trust in his own mate was lacking and it was going to be interesting. "My Queen!" they all bent on one knee and touched the left side of their chest with their fist. Their heads hung low.
I inwardly rolled my eyes, knowing I wasn't their queen officially, yet Damon insisted on them addressing and respecting me as such. He was always rushing things, eager for me to adapt to my new life as a vampire queen.
I nodded to them with a soft smile before leaving my room, half expecting them to stop me or follow, but they did neither.
Lost in the labyrinthine corridors of the vast castle, I couldn't decide where to go or how to find Damon.
"My Queen!" Harper's sudden appearance startled me, and relief flooded through me as my problem was solved.
"Harper, right?" I asked, seeking confirmation.
"Yes, my Queen!" she replied with deference.
"Would you give me a tour of this castle?" I asked politely. She appeared conflicted.
"I am getting bored in my room," I shrugged.
"Of course, my Queen," she smiled softly before gathering the edges of her gown and slightly bowing in respect. "This way, please," she gestured in a direction, and I walked happily alongside her. "This is our kitchen, and you can order whatever you like and decide the menu for meals," she informed me.
"I decide on the menu?!" I was surprised. "But I just arrived here and don't know much about Vampire meals," I protested.
"Vampires generally don't eat. Only hybrids or the human slaves working here need to be fed," she explained.
"Oh!" I exclaimed, looking around.
"Shall we proceed?" she asked politely.
I nodded as I strode behind her.
"This is the library," she announced, gesturing towards the expansive room that resembled a grand hall, lined with towering bookshelves. It seemed like a labyrinth, where one could easily get lost amidst the volumes.
"You can come here and read to pass your time whenever you're bored," she advised.
"Hmm," I agreed softly.
"Do you want to have a look?" she asked.
"No, I will come here sometime later. Right now, I want to see Damon," I informed her.
"The King is busy and he left early in the morning for some urgent work," she replied hesitantly.
"Oh," I pretended to sound disappointed. "Where is his room?" I asked in a curiosity-laced voice.
"It's one level down from your room," she replied sincerely.
"Can I see his room?" I asked, hoping she would agree to give me a tour, secretly aiming to find some clues.
"Um, I'm sorry, my Queen, but King's instructions..." she began to mumble, uncertainty evident in her voice.
"Oh, come on, Harper. I am your Queen, and I can surely visit your king's room. After all, I am his mate," I declared confidently. "Yeah, right, my Queen," she seemed to agree quickly.
"This way, please," she led the way.
My heart raced as I entered Damon's room. It was decorated in shades of grey and white, exuding a dark aura. I could feel the dark energies in the room. It was going to be difficult to spy on Damon.
Quietly, I began to roam around his room, trying to appear casual.
"Nice! This room is beautiful but very dull," I muttered as if I were already envisioning myself living here.
"I need to change a lot before I move into his room," I grunted, scrunching my nose in disgust.
"King will be pleased to know you're ready to move in," Harper said. Suddenly, my eyes landed on a large portrait covered by a silk cloth.
"What's this?" I inquired, feeling drawn to the portrait as I moved towards it.
"My Queen, the King doesn't like anyone to touch his personal stuff," Harper warned, but I ignored his caution.
With determination, I gripped the
edge of the silk cloth and pulled it away, revealing the picture beneath I gasped at the sight of it. The lady in
the portrait looked exactly like me, but it wasn't me, that much was certain.
"Who is she?" I mumbled, but Harper remained silent, either unaware of her or unwilling to divulge.
Then something clicked in my mind as I recalled my past conversation with Damon.
"She is... Arabella!" I announced, turning around to find Damon standing at the door.
Chapter 573
Damon smirked as he strode toward me, his eyes locked onto mine as I furrowed my brow at his unexpected presence. Wasn't he supposed to be working? How did he appear here so suddenly? Glancing at Harper, understanding dawned on me. Perhaps she had sent him a message, and he had teleported himself here.
"So, it was all true. Arabella does exist," I concluded, turning to look at the picture once more.
No one could find a difference between us. Even I couldn't distinguish. The picture looked very old, and the attire she had in that picture looked like it belonged to some ancient era. The art was a masterpiece, and I couldn't help but appreciate the artist in my mind. He had truly defined the beauty of the lady in the picture, and I found it even more beautiful than reality-or maybe she was more beautiful than me.
But I still couldn't believe that it was true and that Arabella did exist. Because when Damon first told me about Arabella, I thought he was merely flirting with me, using his popular story to impress a girl. But here I was, staring at the picture of Arabella before me.
"I always told you the truth, Selena, but alas, you never believed me," he clicked his tongue, sounding disappointed.
But my mind was racing with other thoughts and possibilities. Was Arabella that missing piece of the puzzle I was looking for?!
"Okay, I understand that Arabella looks exactly like me," I said, looking at him quizzically. "Was she also your mate, and how can it be a coincidence that I am also your mate?"
"Arabella was my queen, mate, and the love of my life in a previous life, and it's destiny that now you're my mate," he explained in his cold tone.
"Am I related to Arabella in any way? I mean, was I Arabella in my previous life?" I asked curiously.
His intense gaze pierced through me as if trying to read my mind.
"Does it matter to you?" He asked back.
"Of course, it does. I have the right to know everything about her if she is connected to me," I insisted.
"It's just a coincidence that you look like her. There is no connection between you and Arabella," he dismissed, turning to look at the picture with the same adoration he directed at me.
"Is that so?" I challenged, and Damon's gaze turned skeptical. I felt there was more.
"Yes. You need to start trusting me," he emphasized.
I nodded, deciding to let go of this topic for now. Persisting could create more suspicion.
"By the way, what are you doing here in my room? Did you make up your mind and want to move in?" he asked, taking me off guard.
"Umm... no!" I mumbled, receiving a raised eyebrow reaction from him. "I was bored, so I thought of taking a tour of your castle. I hope I didn't offend you, Vampire King," I said, giving him an innocent look. "Of course, you can roam around the castle. It's your castle as well, my mate," he asserted.
"That's very kind of you, Vampire King, but we're not yet bound in matrimony, so I cannot officially assume the title of your queen," I countered, my voice laced with a hint of resistance.
"We can rectify that tomorrow and get married if you consent," he replied, a mischievous smirk dancing upon his lips.
I turned away, rolling my eyes.
"You're incredibly impatient," I muttered under my breath.
"Guilty as charged, my mate," he conceded, his presence now closer, his hands finding their place on my waist. A shiver traversed my spine as his touch sent tingles through me. "I can hardly contain my
eagerness, Selena, he
leaning in to press a tender kiss against the nape of my neck. My heart quickened, besieged by an onslaught of unfamiliar emotions.
"Um, I know, Damon, but I still need some time," I said, turning to face him and taking a step back to create some distance.
"I understand, baby," he replied, his voice turning low and husky.
"So, what's Arabella and your story?" I asked eagerly.
Damon stared at me for a long minute before speaking. "I'll tell you later. Right now, I want to take you somewhere."
"Huh!" I was dumbfounded when he grabbed my hand and led me to God knows where. He led me to a room resembling a conference room, where many people, adorned in expensive suits, were gathered around a large table. I looked at Damon in puzzlement. He smiled before addressing the people there.
"Gentlemen, allow me to introduce my mate and queen, Selena. I want each of you to detail the arrangements for the upcoming celebration and accommodate any adjustments she may desire," Damon proclaimed with authority.
"Damon, you're moving too swiftly in our relationship. Please, slow down," I murmured, a tinge of irritation flickering in his eyes for the briefest of moments.
"My dear subjects eagerly anticipate the grand celebration in your honor, Selena," he continued in his composed but distant manner. I nodded, casting a glance around at the assembled courtiers.
"Thank you all sincerely, but there's truly no need for such extravagance," I replied graciously.
"My Queen," Silas, one of Damon's trusted ministers as I remembered him, spoke up, "it is our utmost pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you within our kingdom."
I nodded, smiling. "Okay, tell me, how can I help?" I asked, trying to blend in with them.
Their faces lit up with enthusiasm as
they eagerly shared their plans, painting vivid pictures with their words. I absorbed every detail they divulged, offering my insights and suggestions where I saw fit. It was gratifying to see Damon's
expression light up with satisfaction at my active participation.
Yet, amidst the flurry of
conversation and excitement, my mind kept circling back to Arabella. She was the missing puzzle piece the key to unraveling the truth behind it all. I needed to uncover her secrets, her connection to the real story. To do that, I knew I had to earn their trust, particularly Damon's.
Chapter 574
"Zander, I need to have a word with you," Maddox's voice echoed with concern as he stormed into my room, his footsteps echoing off the walls after I evaded our conversation in the pack's office.
"Not now, Maddox," I dismissed him with a sharp edge to my tone, my gaze fixed on the file before me.
"I'm not letting this slide, Zander. We have to talk," he insisted, his tone firm, unwavering.
Huffing in frustration, I turned to face him, my jaw set with tension.
"You want to talk?!" I growled, my voice low and intense. "Fine, let's talk. What's on your mind?"
"Why did you allow Selena to go with that cunning Vampire King?" he questioned, his eyes burning with intensity.
"Isn't it obvious, Maddox?" I snapped, my frustration boiling over. "He's Selena's mate, and I have no right to hold her back."
"No!" he bit out, his voice sharp with disagreement. "She's our Luna, and you're her mate first. You have every right to stop her, to fight for her," he countered, his words laced with conviction. "But instead, you just stood there and watched her leave with that filthy vampire." "I don't owe you an answer, Maddox," I asserted with the weight of my Alpha authority pressing in my voice. He backed off, head bowed in submission, but the stubborn wolf refused to yield so easily.
"I'm asking as your friend, Zander. Let me be there for you," he implored, his tone softening.
"I don't need anyone," I retorted, my words sharp and cold.
"Of course, the Alpha King doesn't need anyone. But my friend Zander needs me in his vulnerable time. Speak to me," he persisted, his sincerity evident.
I understood his intentions, but I was steadfast in my resolve never to reveal my weaknesses to anyone. So, I remained silent, focusing on my tasks. Surely, he would grow weary of waiting and depart like everyone else. At least, that's what I assumed. Yet, he remained rooted to his spot.
"No, I won't leave you alone until you open up to me," he declared, his voice piercing through the tense air as though he were peering into the depths of my mind. "Please, tell me the reason. It's tearing me apart to see you like this. Are you intending to send Selena to the Vampire Kingdom? Do you suspect Damon is plotting something? If it's part of your strategy, why didn't you confide in me?"
"I have no plan or strategy, Maddox!" I snapped, frustration lacing every word. "All I wanted was for Selena to find happiness."
"Damn it, Zander! And you believe Selena will find happiness with that Vampire King?!" His voice rose in indignation. "You didn't even consider your son, Austin. How will he cope without his mother?"
I glared at him, baring my teeth. If anyone else were in his place, they would be dead by now for raising his voice at me. But Maddox was my childhood friend, and only he had the right to talk to me like this because I knew he was fighting with me for my own good. "I am dying, Maddox," I announced, and Maddox froze and his eyes widened, looking at me with disbelief.
"What... What did you say?!" he stumbled back in shock.
"My death is near," I sighed, running a frantic hand through my hair. "Selena has a chance to be happy again with a mate. I can't be selfish and leave her sad and crying after I'm gone."
"H... How is it possible?" He stammered, looking dumbfounded. "No, that's not true."
"It is true," I nodded. "And no one can change it."
"Zander, please, tell me this is just some twisted joke," Maddox pleaded, his brows furrowing in a mix of disbelief and desperation.
"It's no joke, Maddox. I wish it were," I replied solemnly, my tone weighed down by the gravity of the situation. "I'm deadly serious. According to the ancient prophecy, my life will end on my thirtieth birthday."
Maddox's expression shifted from confusion to stunned silence, his mind grappling with the harsh reality I had just revealed.
"And your birthday... it's on the next full moon, just a week away," he murmured, his voice barely audible as if he couldn't quite comprehend the proximity of my impending doom. In fact, I also didn't realize my end came so soon.
*Selena*
"Shh, Austin, don't cry, my little love. Mommy will be back before you know it," I whispered tenderly, trying to soothe my sobbing baby boy through the pixelated screen of our video call. Yet, his tears persisted, his tiny face contorted with sadness, and my own heart ached in response, threatening to betray my attempts at composure. My eyes brimmed with tears that threatened to roll down at any time.
"But Mom," he whimpered, his voice trembling with emotion, "last time you went to work, you said it was your last job and you'd never leave me alone again."
I swallowed hard against the lump forming in my throat, feeling the weight of his words pierce through me.
"I know, sweetheart, and I'm sorry," I murmured, my voice thick with remorse. "If it weren't absolutely necessary, I wouldn't have left you, you have to believe me."
"But this time, Dad's with you," I
added, trying to offer some
Of
reassurance amidst the waves of guilt crashing over me. "Speaking Dad, how is he? Are you taking good care of him?" I inquired, my gaze scanning the room until I finally caught sight of him, attempting to hide from me yet still listening to our conversation.
"Yes, Mom, Dad is okay," Austin said, but I could see that he was far from it.
His demeanor betrayed a profound sense of misery, his eyes bloodshot and weary, burdened by dark circles etched from sleepless nights. A wild beard sprawled across his once-handsome face, a clear indication that he hadn't been taking care of himself. He may have thought he could hide himself from
me, but he didn't know that wherever
he was, he had my unwavering
focus.
"Good, my baby boy. Remember to finish your meal and retire early. Austin, it's your responsibility to ensure your father's well-being and happiness, especially in my absence," I emphasized, projecting my voice so Zander could also hear. "Okay Mom, I will take care of Dad. I promise," Austin spoke with maturity beyond his years, his voice carrying a weight of responsibility.
"That's my good boy, Austin..." I hesitated, my gaze lingering on Zander, who had caught my eye. "Tell your Dad that Mom loves you both," I declared as my eyes locked with Zander's for a brief moment before he abruptly left the room. "Okay, baby boy, finish your homework and don't miss your training sessions," I managed a soft smile through the tears that threatened to spill from my eyes. "Mom has to leave for work. But remember, Mom loves you, Austin." "Austin loves Mom. I will be a good boy. Please come back soon," he replied, his expression a mix of sadness and understanding.
I nodded, unable to speak as I disconnected the phone, the tears I had tried to suppress now freely flowing down my cheeks.
I knew time was not on our side; I needed to act swiftly to convince Damon to break this mate bond and reject me. then I needed to find a solution to defy the prophecy. Zander couldn't meet his fate like this. There had to be another way.
Chapter 575
I didn't have any plan or strategy, but I knew I needed to work it out before time slipped from my hands.
"I need to do it," I muttered to myself, feeling the weight of the situation bearing down on me.
"How are you going to do this?" Arena's voice cut through my thoughts, tinged with frustration.
Suddenly, something clicked in my mind.
"I have a plan," I chimed in confidently.
"What plan?" she purred through the mind link, her curiosity piqued.
"His first love!" I exclaimed, the realization dawning on me. "I mean, his first mate, Arabella. He would have loved her more, and if he finds her back, he will definitely choose her over me and eventually reject me," I explained, the words tumbling out in a rush.
"I just need to find out about Arabella," I whispered, deep in thought. "And let him realize that I am not her. Maybe..." I trailed off, a sense of hope flickering within me. "Maybe I can bring her back."
"But she died thousands of years ago," Arena countered.
My wolf was very thoughtful, yet I was desperate to alter our destiny and make it possible for me to be free from this mate bond.
"Though it was a thousand years ago, we possess that special power, don't we?" I smirked.
"No! No, Selena, it's a bad idea," I could sense her shaking her head as she warned me in my mind. "Special powers can only be used when necessary, and we might lose the chance to use them again."
"I don't care, Arena. I am going to do it. Screw the consequences," I huffed. "What are those powers for if we can't use them?"
"Yes, Selena, we are powerful, and we have some special powers, but you can't always use them. Those powers have rules, and the bearer has to follow them," she reminded me in a serious tone.
"I understand this," I murmured helplessly, my voice tinged with uncertainty. "I just don't know..." I shook my head, feeling utterly lost. I had no other plan, no idea how I could possibly return to Zander. "But we're not using it to harm anyone or the world. We're using it to help Damon regain his love. And if Damon rejects me, at least I can be with my family," I reasoned, attempting to convey a sense of logic amidst the chaos.
"I have a better idea," Arena suggested, her voice resolute. "Why don't we just escape? I'll make sure no one can stop us," she declared with pride. I knew Arena was the mightiest golden wolf with immense power. But she underestimated the power of the mate bond. "No, Arena. We can't just run away like that," I responded firmly, though my heart wavered with uncertainty. "The mate bond with Damon is too strong. Even though I'm mated to Zander, I feel a deeper connection to Damon. I don't understand what's happening. Maybe I'm Arabella's reincarnation, maybe I'm her replacement. But I need to know the truth. The only way to uncover the whole truth is to delve into what happened thousands of years ago," I mumbled, my words heavy with the weight of uncertainty and longing.
"Now I understand why wolves fear the mate bond. It can render us utterly helpless at times," Arena grunted, her voice heavy with resignation.
I nodded in agreement, feeling the weight of our situation pressing down on me like a mountain.
"So, our only option is to convince Damon to agree to reject us. Only then can we be free from this bond. Besides, I need to uncover the truth about how to nullify the prophecy and prevent its dire consequences," I declared with determination, my gaze fixed firmly ahead. "Selena, an ancient prophecy cannot be altered or thwarted. It is destined to unfold as written in the golden annals of history," Arena's voice echoed in my head in a somber tone.
But I refused to entertain thoughts of failure. There was no room for it in my heart. I was determined to defy fate and safeguard my Zander at all costs.
"I refuse to accept that. I will find a
way to overcome the prophecy and its repercussions. It cannot dictate
our future, And if any harm comes
our way, I will be there to bear it before it touches Zander," I proclaimed, my voice unwavering despite the trembling of my spirit.
"You're attempting to defy destiny itself, Selena. It's unprecedented," Arena's voice reverberated with concern. "But I stand by your side. I will do whatever it takes to protect Zander and Lyon." My heart pounded loudly with a mixture of determination and fear, the unknown consequences of our defiance looming ominously on the horizon.
"He cannot be taken from me, or I will die," I whispered under my breath, a vow etched into the very fabric of my being.
vel
Taking a deep breath, I resolved to address one issue at a time. With determination, I swung open the door and ventured out in search help. As strode through the corridors, a glimmer of hope sparked within me upon spotting Harper in the kitchen. The royal staff bustled about, preparing for dinner.
"Harper!" I called out, and she promptly appeared before me.
"Yes, Your Highness?" she responded.
"I'm feeling rather bored," I confessed with a nonchalant shrug. "Allow me to assist you in the kitchen."
"No, Your Highness," she hesitated. "If the king were to find out, he would be greatly displeased."
"He won't be angry; I'll speak to him," I reassured. "Besides, I used to work in the kitchen with omegas in my old pack, and I thoroughly enjoy cooking. Please, let me help you," I insisted.
She appeared conflicted, pausing for a moment before finally nodding. "Very well, my Queen. As you wish. This way, please," she gestured, inviting me to follow her.
Step one was complete; now it was
time to proceed to step two. As I attempted to mingle among them, an air of reservation surrounded the group, as though they were all apprehensive of someone or something. Only Harper seemed willing to engage with me, offering open conversation and answering my every inquiry.
"By the way, Harper, have you ever met Arabella?" I asked, my knife deftly slicing through a head of cabbage.
"Who, Your Highness?" Her tone carried a hint of surprise.
"Arabella?!" I emphasized, "The lady whose portrait adorned the king's chamber," I clarified, searching her face for any hint of recognition.
"Oh, I thought it was you," she replied, avoiding direct eye contact. It was evident she was lying and concealing something.
"Come on, I assumed with your long tenure here, you would be familiar with every aspect of the king's affairs. I had hoped you might help me in understanding the Vampire King even more," I urged, pushing gently for her cooperation. "Of course, Your Highness, I will do my utmost," she replied earnestly.
"Then please, enlighten me on what you know about Arabella. I need to discern if she holds significant sway over the king," I pressed further, eager for any insight.
"I'm sorry, my Queen, but I cannot offer assistance on this matter," she declared, shaking her head resolutely.
Chapter 576
The Royal Witch *Selena*
Harper remained steadfast and fiercely loyal to her king. I understood that extracting information from her would prove to be a daunting task. Yet, I refused to concede defeat; determination fueled my persistence.
"But why?" I furrowed my brow, attempting to coax her into cooperation. "Harper, you need not fear anyone. As your future queen, I assure you of your safety," I reassured, reaching out to touch her shoulder. However, she evaded my touch and busied herself with her tasks.
"I possess no knowledge of the king's personal affairs. His private life is closely guarded, and he divulges little to none of it," she explained impassively, finally turning to face me. "If you seek answers, why not confront the king directly?" she challenged. Ah, a clever response indeed.
"I thought about it," I shrugged, feigning innocence. "But he didn't tell me. Perhaps he thought I'd be jealous if he discussed his former lover with me." I smiled coyly. "But I'm not jealous. I'm curious and eager to know. I hoped you could share something with me that would help me impress the king." I pouted, emphasizing my desire for information.
"My queen, the king is already smitten by you. You don't need to impress him," Harper reassured me.
"Oh, come on, Harper. Don't change the topic. Tell me about Arabella," I insisted, growing annoyed by her evasion. She looked at me suspiciously.
"Never mind. I think no one here wants to talk about her as if she were a bad woman," I scowled.
"No, that's not true," Harper protested promptly, and I knew I had struck a chord.
"Oh, really?!" I challenged. "But it seems like none of you like her, and discussing her is treated as a sin."
"No, Your Highness! That's far from the truth. Everyone respects her. But trust me, no one here knows much about Lady Arabella," she said desperately. "However, I have heard she was a very noble and humble woman." "Where did you hear about her?" I inquired, delving deeper into the conversation.
"I heard from some elders, but they also haven't seen her or know much about her," she explained.
"Okay, I believe you," I replied with a soft smile, though a sense of frustration gnawed at me. It seemed like a futile effort. Now, where should I go to uncover the secrets of the mysterious Arabella?
"But, Your Highness!" she suddenly squealed, as if remembering something important. "I know that there's only one person very close to the king. Maybe she can help you."
Wow! Now I hit the jackpot!
"Really? Tell me, who is she, Harper?" I demanded eagerly.
"The royal witch, Cassandra!" she replied.
The royal witch?!
"Cassandra!" I repeated in astonishment.
"Yes, my Queen. She is the king's personal adviser and the most trustworthy person. Perhaps she can help," Harper explained, her tone earnest.
"Thank you, Harper," I said warmly, a
grateful smile spreading across my
face. "This is a tremendous help. I
will be forever grateful if I can find what seek. Your king and I wil
deeply appreciate your service and
loyalty."
Kon
"You are welcome, Your Highness," Harper responded, bowing respectfully.
"By the way, where can I find the Royal Witch, Cassandra?" I inquired, setting aside the chopped vegetables I had been working on. My task here was complete; it was time to move on to the next step. "She will be in her lair," Harper revealed.
"And where is that?" I asked urgently, couldn't wait anymore to meet this Royal Witch.
Harper arranged for a guard to escort me to Cassandra's lair. As I stepped inside, the atmosphere felt peculiar, with the space teeming with wild and dangerous creatures-snakes, scorpions, and other untamed beasts. People
moved about in peculiar attire reminiscent of witches and wizards,
adding to the surreal ambiance.
"Where can I find Cassandra?" I inquired of a woman engrossed in her work amidst the chaotic surroundings.
"Selena Ardolf! My king's mate! What brings you here?" Her directness caught me off guard; she seemed to recognize me despite the fact that we had never met.
"I've heard much about you being the closest confidant of the king, so I wished to meet you," I replied with a polite smile.
"How gracious of you, my Queen. You could have summoned me to the castle instead of venturing here," she remarked, a smirk playing on her lips. Her scrutinizing gaze hinted at her awareness of my true purpose. "Let's get straight to the point," I declared, lifting my chin with resolve.
"So?! You know that I am your king's mate?!" I asked, narrowing my eyes.
"Of course!" she grinned mysteriously. "I know everything about you. The King never hides anything from me," she said smugly. Such overconfidence.
"That's interesting. So, you and the king are very close," I remarked, scanning the dimly lit surroundings. The gloominess of the place added an eerie atmosphere, but I concealed my distaste before turning to face her. "Tell me, what do you know about Arabella?" I asked, adopting an authoritative tone.
She made a flustered face before answering, "It's not my place to divulge such information."
"Why?" I persisted as she moved to pick up a beaker, pouring a green, slimy liquid into a smaller vessel.
"Why do you want to know about Arabella?" she snapped.
"Because she was a part of the king's life, and I want to understand everything about him," I replied casually.
"What you already know is sufficient for you," she said dismissively.
"What happened to her and the king?" I inquired, disregarding her dismissive demeanor. "I want to know everything about their story, and as your future queen, I order you to tell me the truth."
She laughed, one hand resting on her stomach while the other was held up toward me, causing me to furrow my brow deeply. The audacity of this witch.
"I am sorry, Your Highness," she
managed to stifle her amusement. "Do you truly believe that I would hold knowledge about someone who existed thousands of years ago? am sorry to disappointyou, but I am not that old."
Chapter 577
Once again, disappointment washed over me like a tidal wave. It was the second time that day my hopes had been mercilessly dashed. Unsure whether Cassandra spoke the truth or wove a web of lies, one thing was unmistakable-her unwavering loyalty to Damon. "Is there anyone else who can provide information about Arabella?" I queried, my desperation thinly veiled.
"I remain intrigued by the depths of your desperation, my Queen," Cassandra remarked, her lips curving into a smirk as she regarded me skeptically with her piercing gaze. "What compels you to unearth the past? Shouldn't you find solace in having the most powerful Vampire as your mate? Rest assured, whatever transpired in the bygone era holds no sway over your future. You and the king are destined for happiness, leaving the past firmly behind you."
"But I believe that the beginning of a new relationship should be based on truth, and hiding is equivalent to lying," I retorted firmly.
Her gaze softened momentarily before she replied, "I doubt it, as I don't know of anyone who is a thousand years old."
"But surely there must be some literature or records from ancient times, like that portrait," I countered, but she merely smiled before turning her back.
"The discovery of that portrait was merely a coincidence," she said as she disappeared into another room, but I sensed she was hiding information from me.
Now, how would I obtain the information I needed? She was my last hope. Regardless, I resolved to continue my search. Silently, I prayed to the Moon Goddess to show me a way. Time was running out.
"Excuse me, if I'm not mistaken, you are King Damon's mate?" One of the women working there trailed after me, her voice barely above a whisper, as I stepped out of the lair.
I nodded absentmindedly.
"I heard you want to know about the king's previous life," she continued, drawing my attention.
Now she had my full attention.
"Umm... yes! Do you know about it?" I asked, hope rising in my voice.
"No, Your Highness. I don't know about it, but I know someone who can help you with this," she replied.
"Tell me," I demanded eagerly.
"The king's uncle, who has been here since before the king was born," she disclosed.
Great! I hadn't expected my problem to be resolved so soon. Thank you, Moon Goddess!
"Do you know where the king's uncle resides?" I inquired desperately.
"Yes, and if you want, I can take you to him," she offered.
I smiled, nodding. I was now only a step away from the truth and my goal.
*Avery*
From a distance, I watched as Austin trained with his instructor. Zander had appointed the best trainer for his son, but in my heart, I knew no one could shape Austin's skills better than Zander himself. As I observed Austin's movements, it was evident that he was a quick learner, grasping the intricacies of combat with remarkable ease.
Today, a royal bodyguard accompanied him. Typically, either Maddox or Blair would be by his side during training sessions, but both were absent. The absence of Maddox and Blair didn't concern me; rather, it presented the opportunity I had been waiting for. As the training session concluded, Austin prepared to return home. With a cheerful smile, I made my way toward him, calling out his name. "Austin!"
"Avery!" he exclaimed, looking in my direction as he halted in his tracks.
"Yes, little prince! So, you remember me?" I asked, amused.
"Of course. I don't forget so easily. My memory is photogenic," he replied with a proud grin. "I know you are my dad's friend."
"Yes, sweetie. I am your dad and your mom's friend, and I also want to be friends with you," I said with a smile as I ruffled his sweaty hair.
"Don't do this," he snapped, removing my hand with fury. "I don't like when someone touches me."
The little Alpha had some attitude! I smirked.
"Alright, I won't touch you without your permission, Alpha!" I bowed slightly, noticing the little boy looked pleased.
"Thank you, Avery, and I am not the Alpha, but my father is," he retorted.
"Austin, you possess the alpha blood, destined to be the next Alpha King," I cooed in my sweetest voice, a playful glint dancing in my eyes. "Will the future Alpha accompany me somewhere?" I asked with a mischievous tone. "Where?" His curiosity was piqued, evident in the way his brows furrowed with interest.
"Great!" I thought to myself, my plan falling into place perfectly. "I'm feeling rather lonely and bored, so thought of visiting the lake. But alas, I find myself without a companion. Who better than the future alpha to join me?" I flashed him a grin, hoping tentice him with the idea.
"But I'm not allowed to go anywhere," Austin sighed.
He was sharp, no doubt, but still just a child. I could manipulate him easily.
"Oh, come on, Alpha! Who could possibly stop you?" I goaded, employing all my persuasive charm in the hopes that he would succumb to my subtle manipulation.
"Okay!" He relented, and I couldn't help but pump my imaginary fist in triumph.
"Let's go then," I urged eagerly, though I couldn't resist adding a playful jab. "But I don't want your scary-looking bodyguard," I pouted, feigning a moment of hesitation before breaking into a mischievous grin once more. "Why?!" Austin raised a brow, his curiosity evident.
"I doubt he won't let us play in the water," I reasoned, hoping to persuade him.
"Okay, I won't take him," Austin assured, his agreement signaling success. I smiled inwardly, a victorious dance playing out in my mind.
"Wait, Prince Austin," his bodyguard interjected as we headed toward the lake, halting our progress. Austin paused, turning to acknowledge him.
"I am going with my father's friend, Avery, so there's no need to worry. I will be back soon," Austin explained confidently.
"But the Alpha King has instructed that you cannot go anywhere alone," the bodyguard protested, his concern evident.
"I'm not going alone. Avery is with me, and it's my order: don't follow me," Austin asserted in his alpha voice, his tone commanding obedience. Even though he was a kid, the alpha aura inherent in his blood was undeniably intimidating. The bodyguard bowed immediately, acknowledging Austin's authority.
"Please, Prince, let me accompany you. I promise not to disturb you," the bodyguard pleaded, demonstrating his quick thinking.
"Okay," Austin agreed, to my disappointment, relenting to the bodyguard's request.
Arriving at the serene lake, Austin turned to me with a curious expression. "So, Avery, what do you want to do?"
"How about we try fishing?" I suggested.
"Good idea," he agreed with a nod.
"Then let me grab the fishing rod
and net," I said, making my way toward the small cottage nestled beside the lake. But before I could take more than a few steps, the tranquility shattered as bloodthirsty rogues emerged from the shadows, launching a sudden attack on the bodyguard.
"Who are you?!" Austin's voice rang out, filled with defiance, as one of the assailants advanced swiftly towards him.
The young prince displayed
remarkable skill in combat, inflicting
injuries upon a few of the attackers. I watched in awe at his courage, recognizing his rightful place as Alpha Zander's heir and destined to ascend the throne after him. Yet, it was a destiny I couldn't allow to unfold. The bodyguard was killed brutally by rogues though he tried to protect his prince so well and Austin was seized.
"Stop! Let him go!" I cried out, feigning resistance as I moved to fight the rogues, knowing that this was part of our orchestrated plan. They were to wound me superficially and abduct Austin, advancing us to the next phase of our scheme. With a heavy heart and eyes brimming with tears, I played my part, a facade of sadness and despair clouding my features as I made my way back to the pack house.
Chapter 578
"Alpha, I have called the urgent meeting at the last minute because it was necessary," Maddox informed me as I listened to him while reading the reports.
"Hmm! Did everyone gather?" I asked, closing the file and standing up as we headed toward the conference room.
"Yes, Alpha," he replied.
As Maddox said, alphas from different packs of the north had gathered. I threw an intent glance at everyone and found eager eyes watching me with curiosity.
"As you all know," I started addressing the room, "we have gathered here to discuss the issue of rogues. The problem is escalating, and these rogues are growing stronger with each passing day. We need to find a solution because, according to the latest intelligence, they have amassed a formidable army."
The alphas nodded in agreement, their expressions grim with the weight of the situation. I could sense the tension in the air as we contemplated the threat posed by the rogue forces.
"We cannot allow them to continue unchecked," I continued, my voice firm with determination. "Our packs must unite and stand together against this common enemy. We must strategize and coordinate our efforts to ensure the safety and security of our territories." "But how is it possible, Alpha? How can they acquire more armies?" Alpha Zachary's voice echoed with concern, his brow furrowed in worry.
"That's the major concern," I replied, my gaze sweeping across the room. "We are doing everything we can to find out."
"It looks like some of us are traitors and helping those rogues," Alpha Hunter's voice held a note of accusation.
"That's true, someone among us is aiding the rogue king. Without help, he couldn't hide and live in the north," Maddox contemplated, his tone heavy with frustration.
"The strange thing is no one has ever seen the rogue king," Alpha Grayson remarked, his voice tinged with curiosity.
"The bastard always wears a mask, according to the reports," Maddox informed, his words filled with contempt.
"Let us not underestimate the power of unity," I concluded, my voice firm and resolute, breaking the silence that followed. "Together, we will overcome this threat and emerge stronger than ever before." Before I could get any responses, we heard some commotion outside the conference room, a sense of urgency filling the air.
"Who is it?" I inquired, my voice echoing softly in Maddox's mind through our telepathic connection.
"It's Avery," Maddox's response rippled back, laced with an undertone of concern, "arguing with the guards."
I didn't want this important conference to be interrupted, so I decided to go outside and check myself why she was causing trouble for the guards.
"What happened, Avery?" I approached her, my voice firm yet laced with a hint of exasperation. "Why are you shouting? This is the pack's office, and an important conference is ongoing inside the conference room."
At the sound of my voice, Avery's demeanor shifted. Tears welled up in her eyes, and her shoulders slumped in defeat.
"Zander, I'm sorry," she whimpered,
her voice quivering with emotion. "I'm sorry," she repeated, her words a desperate plea for forgiveness. It was then that I noticed the state she was in her clothes were torn, and
on her
blood seeped from an
arm, staining the fabric crimson.
"What happened to you, Avery? Who did this to you?" I asked with deep concern etched into my voice. She was in my pack, and her safety was my responsibility.
"The rogues," she sobbed, her tears staining her cheeks as she spoke, causing a frown to form on my face. "They came and attacked Austin and me."
"Austin?! What happened to him?" I demanded, my voice rising with a mix of anger and worry.
"We were by the lakeside, and suddenly the rogues descended upon us," she explained between sobs, her words punctuated by her trembling breaths.
"That's not possible," I shook my head in disbelief. "How could rogues breach my territory?"
"Zander, I know it's hard to believe, but it happened. I could recognize and they were rogues," she affirmed, sniffling. "I'm sorry, I fought back but couldn't save Austin. They took him with them," she began to cry again. What she was saying seemed improbable, yet the desperation in her eyes left me with a sinking feeling.
"Alpha, let's go. We need to see for ourselves," Maddox, who had been at my side since I left the conference room, suggested urgently.
Without wasting another minute, we
sprinted towards the lakeside. As we arrived, the scene before us ignited a furious rage within me. The guards and the royal bodyguards assigned to protect Austin lay lifeless, their bodies bearing the marks of a
merciless attack. There was no sign
of my son.
"It seems a battle happened here," Maddox gritted out, his voice low and filled with simmering anger. "Those filthy rogues will pay for what they did to our soldiers."
I clenched my fists, my wolf pacing
restlessly within me as fury boiled
beneath my skin. "How the hell did it
happen? How did the rogues enter my pack and kill my guards, abduct my son?" I growled, my voice raw with emotion.
"It's clear that there was a traitor among us who let the rogues in," Maddox snarled, his eyes blazing with righteous indignation.
Suddenly, Avery came running into the room, tears streaming down her face. Maddox and I exchanged a silent glance, a mutual understanding passing between us.
"I can't believe they took him away while I was still alive here. I should have died too," Avery sobbed, her words choked with grief. "I'm sorry, Zander. I couldn't save Austin."
Her cries grated on my nerves, fueling the fire of rage within me. The knowledge that my son had been taken, that I had failed to protect him, was a bitter pill to swallow. "Don't worry, Avery," I said, my voice firm and unwavering. "No one can harm him. He is my son, Alpha Zander's son, and I will get him back very soon."
Chapter 579
As I was about to leave, Maddox came by my side.
"Alpha, we have a message," Maddox informed me, his voice carrying a sense of urgency. I nodded, and he showed me a video message on his phone. The screen displayed the rogue king, a cowardly figure hidden behind a mask, his voice dripping with malice as he delivered his demands. He taunted me, informing me that he had my son and wanted to see me. I handed the phone back to Maddox and turned my gaze towards the vast expanse of the clear sky above. But ominous signs loomed on the horizon, as dark clouds began to gather, threatening to obscure the sun's rays.
"Let's prepare to fulfill the wishes of the rogue king and go to meet him," I declared, my voice resonating with determination.
"What?" Avery gasped, her surprise evident in her voice. "Are you really going to meet him?" Her tone shifted suddenly, filled with worry. I offered her a calm smile.
"Yes," I replied, meeting her gaze steadily. "He has my son, so I have no choice but to listen to him." I nodded.
"Zander, I won't let you go to see the rogue alone. I will come with you," Avery insisted.
I paused, considering her offer, and glanced at Maddox. He nodded subtly, his eyes reflecting a steely resolve. "Okay," I replied to her, my tone firm and unwavering.
The Rogue King had demanded that I meet him alone, without my people or my beta. He knew very well that I would do anything for Austin, and he was right. As I reached the place he had mentioned, which was far away from my pack and nestled in an abundant valley across the hills, the air was thick with tension. Lone wolves prowled the perimeter, their eyes filled with malice.
The filthy rogues patrolled every boundary, their movements aggressive as they searched for any sign of threat. I stood among them, outwardly calm but seething with suppressed fury. They approached me, searching for weapons, but I had come here unarmed. I couldn't help but feel amused when they didn't bother to search Avery, allowing her to pass unharmed. I smiled inwardly, knowing their intentions. They led me towards a small, decrepit building where their cunning king awaited.
"Finally, Alpha King, we meet!" The rogue king greeted me with a wicked smile, though half of his face was obscured by a mask.
"Rogue King, you didn't have to go to such lengths to meet me. You could have simply sent a message," I said, my voice dripping with mockery. The Rogue King laughed bitterly in response.
"Alpha King, I know how much you've been itching for this meeting," he gritted his teeth. "But this time is different. You're without your guards, without your pack, and I must say, it's quite a sight to behold."
I couldn't help but scoff at his words. "A true alpha is never helpless, whether he's alone or without his army. It's a misconception to think you can make me defenseless. I am still here because I choose to be," I roared, my voice echoing with dominance and determination. "Alpha King Zander Blake, I think you forgot that your son is still in my custody," the rogue king threatened, anger blazing in his eyes.
"I haven't forgotten anything, Rogue King. He is my son, and he carries my blood. Though he may appear as a child, you cannot hold him here against his will," I taunted, a smirk playing at the corners of my lips. The rogue king looked visibly
annoyed by my defiance
"You don't believe me," I snorted, shaking my head at his ignorance. "Then see for yourself." With those words, Austin appeared, his form covered in blood, his eyes burning with anger.
"Austin!" Avery cried out, rushing towards him in feigned concern. But Austin's glare halted her in her tracks, and she took a step back, clearly intimidated by his fury.
"Austin, relax. Dad is here," I said in my Alpha voice, commanding authority lacing my words. Almost instantly, Austin's demeanor shifted, his anger subsiding as he calmed down in response to my presence. "Dad!" Austin shouted, his voice filled with relief as he ran towards me.
"Yes, son. I'm here," I replied, a surge of protectiveness coursing through me as I pulled him behind me, shielding him from any potential threat.
The Rogue King's face turned white with shock and terror at the unexpected turn of events.
"There's no need to pretend. Show yourself," I ordered, my voice cold and commanding as I fixed my gaze on him.
He glared at me with surprise before hesitantly lifting his hand to touch his filthy mask. With a swift motion, the Rogue King removed his disguise, revealing his true identity.
"Alpha Elijah!" I smirked, a chuckle escaping me at the sight of him. I wasn't surprised to see him; I had already anticipated his involvement when I learned about his true face.
Elijah appeared bewildered by my
reaction, but Avery, who was Elijah's daughter and his partner in crime, recognized the truth in my eyes. She understood that I had discovered her involvement when she saw the disdain and loathing reflected in my gaze.
"So, you knew all along," she muttered, her voice barely audible as realization dawned upon her. "But how did you find out?"
"Yes, Avery. I knew your real intentions all along, yet I allowed you to continue your charade while I played along," I informed her, my voice dripping with contempt. "I discovered the truth about you and your father when I learned about Austin."
"So many questions arose that
demanded answers. When I
conducted an inquiry, every layer of
secrecy unraveled itself, revealing a whisper of the past," I continued, casting a steely gaze between Elijah and Avery. "I learned about Dr. Anderson's murder and the fire in her chamber."
"Furthermore, you even killed my father and orchestrated all of this because you were already aware of the prophecy and sought to seize control of my pack," I spat out the words with a mixture of hatred and rage.
Chapter 580
Avery averted her eyes, but it wouldn't lessen the sins she had committed. Elijah had killed my father, and he would pay for his deed, but Avery... I never thought she would betray me. She was my best friend, someone I had known since childhood. I had always counted on her for everything; I even used to discuss every problem with her. But what did I get in return? Betrayal.
"Why, Avery?!" I bit out, the hurt and anger evident in my voice. "I thought you were my best friend. I trusted you more than anyone else. I believed everything you said. So why did you betray me like this?" I yelled, my voice echoing with pain and disbelief. "Zander... I am... sorry," she murmured, her voice barely audible as she bowed her head in shame. But her apology did little to quell my anger; I couldn't bring myself to believe that she truly regretted her actions.
"How could your sorry bring back the people I've lost because of your sins? You have committed sins, not crimes, and for sins, there is no forgiveness," I spat out bitterly, my words laced with venom.
"Cut the crap, Alpha King. Okay, I accept that you and your son are powerful, but you are now in my territory and won't be able to leave this place alive. Our purpose in calling you here was to kill you and take your pack and power. And today, I'm going to fulfill that purpose," Elijah declared, motioning for his people to attack me.
But before they could even lay a hand on me, Maddox and my army erupted through the boundaries of this filthy place, charging in with ferocity. The Rogue King's forces attempted to counter, but my wolves overwhelmed them, swiftly dispatching each rogue one by one. "Now you will see, Rogue King, who the real king is here," I declared, my voice filled with authority as I retrieved my silver sword. "This time, you won't be able to escape. You are trapped, and I have finally caught up to you. There's nowhere left for you to hide."
Elijah's eyes burned with hatred as he attempted to strike me with his magical weapon, but I dodged his attack and swiftly countered with a strike of my own. "Avery!" I roared in horror as Elijah used her as a shield, pulling her in front of him just as I lunged forward with my silver sword, the blade piercing her stomach. "No! Avery!" I cried out, wrenching the sword back and throwing it aside before catching her as she began to fall.
"Alpha!" Maddox's warning shout filled the air as he leaped into action, charging at the rogue king and swiftly dispatching him with a lethal blow, snapping his head. "I..... am sorry, Zander. I... I am truly s...sorry for everything I h...have done to you," Avery mumbled through gritted teeth, her breathing labored with pain.
"Shh, don't say anything, Avery. Let me take you to the hospital," I said urgently, moving to pick her up. But she stopped me with a feeble gesture.
"No, I don't have time. Let me die like this. I deserve it," she said, her voice barely above a whisper, the pain evident in every breath. I watched helplessly as her blood continued to flow, staining the ground around us. "Maybe this is what I deserve for my sins. But before I die, I want to do one good thing in my life: tell you the truth," she whispered, her words barely audible over the sounds of the surrounding chaos.
"What are you talking about?" I asked, my confusion growing as I leaned in to hear her words more clearly.
"Zander, there is a very big conspiracy going on, and Selena is a part of it," Avery disclosed, her voice strained with urgency.
"What do you mean?" I frowned, feeling a sense of unease settling in the pit of my stomach. Avery's breathing became labored, her hiccups interrupting her words.
"Damon is not Selena's mate. Everything is a lie," she managed to gasp out before her breathing slowed, her eyes turning vacant.
"Avery! Avery!" I shouted, shaking her lifeless body in a futile attempt to rouse her. But she remained still, her last breath escaping her lips. She had left us, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions.
What did she mean by Damon not being Selena's mate? And what was the truth behind the conspiracy she had alluded to? Despite the doubts swirling in my mind, one thing was certain: a dying person never lied.
*Selena*
Cassandra's assistant, Alice, had
requested my presence at a location
she provided the address for.
Despite the challenge of evading the bodyguard Damon had assigned to me, I managed to slip away and head straight to the address given by Alice. The Vampire Kingdom was vastly different from the werewolf pack, with its unique housing arrangements and distinct social hierarchy. The address Alice had provided led me to a secluded corner of the kingdom, where opulent villas stood as a testament
to the vampires' aristocratic lifestyle.
I concealed my face with a scarf as I navigated the unfamiliar streets, seeking directions from passersby to reach my destination. Finally, I arrived at the lavish villa indicated by Alice. It exuded an air of grandeur and royalty, unmistakably belonging to the king's uncle. Alice greeted me outside.
Some guards stood watch at the
imposing entrance of the villa, their vigilant eyes scanning the
lined
surroundings for any sign of trouble. Alice wasted no time, leading me. through the ornate corridors with opulent tapestries and gilded furnishings, until we reached the grand hall where Sir Nicholas awaited.
าวนา
As I entered, I had expected to encounter an elderly figure befitting the title of "King's Uncle," but Sir Nicholas defied my expectations. Despite his familial connection to royalty, he appeared remarkably youthful, his demeanor exuding an aurà of power and authority. Vampires had their charm for sure.
"Ah, Selena. How delightful to have Damon's mate gracing us with her presence," he replied, his words tinged with a hint of sarcasm that did not escape my notice. It made me feel somewhat uncomfortable.
"Hello, Sir Nicholas," I greeted with a respectful nod, noting the subtle tension in the air.
