Chapter 1741

Chapter 1741

Maisie collected herself, remaining silent for a while. The kindness Daniel had shown her, her acquaintance with Lily, and what kind of person Lily really was-she had a clear picture of it all. She smiled, looking at Camila with a glint of pureness and determination in her eyes. "You're overthinking. I'm not reading too much into it."

"Oh, that's good!" Camila smiled. "I was worried... that you might mind Daniel's past with Ms. Reyes, so..."

"What's there to mind?" Maisie enunciated each word. "They didn't really have a past!"

"What?" Camila, who was taken aback, forced a smile. "Well... you really don't know? They..."

"They were married before, but they separated right afterward. They just got married for the sake of family interests." Maisie spoke nonchalantly. "They were married in name only. It was not like you said." "Hah, Daniel told you this?" Camila composed herself and took another sip of water. "Do you believe him?"

"Why wouldn't I?" Maisie chuckled. "He's told me everything about his past, and Racheal has confirmed it. I believe they wouldn't lie to me."

Camila hesitated, then shook her head. "Maisie, you're... quite simple!"

"There's nothing wrong with being simple." Maisie continued to smile. "By the way, I remember Daniel introducing you to me, saying you're the daughter of his fourth uncle and his younger cousin. So, you've never lived with Daniel before, right?"

"Well... no."

"How do you know so much about him then?"

Camila was appalled.

"Camila." Maisie continued. "You must have heard it from someone else, right? I think... you might be the one overthinking. Gossip is better left alone, and it's best not to take it too seriously, don't you think?" Camila, who was speechless, stared blankly at her.

Maisie glanced at her phone and shook it in front of Camila. "Sorry, Racheal has something for me. I'll go see her now. Can we discuss the manuscript later?"

"Oh, sure!" Camila's expression was extremely unnatural, but she still forced a smile. She watched Maisie walk away with a dark gleam in her eyes.

Admittedly, this was a gentle, intelligent girl. It seemed like amnesia had only made her forget the past and hadn't changed her true nature. Maisie used to be like this, and she still was-soft on the surface, yet decisive on the inside, especially when it concerned Daniel...

Camila bit her lip and smirked. She took her glass and turned back to her workstation.

She turned on her computer, the final manuscript Maisie had submitted appearing on the screen. If there were no issues with it, it would be time to prepare it for typesetting and printing. Camila smiled, moved the mouse, and made a few changes to the manuscript.

That day, Daniel found Maisie asleep when he got home. She had stayed up late to revise her manuscript again.

He had come to bring her breakfast, and once again, she was sprawled over the table in the same position as before, not covered with a blanket or even wearing a sweater.

Daniel was both angry and worried. After carrying her back to bed and waiting for her to wake up, he put on a serious expression and scolded her.

"This is the second time! Is this manuscript so important? Do you have to stay up late to revise it?"

Maisie rubbed her sleepy eyes. His low growl had startled her, and she got out of bed to wrap her arms around him from behind.

"Uh... I..."

Chapter 1742

Chapter 1742

"What do you have to say for yourself?" Daniel, who was not easy to coax, didn't even turn around. "How many times have I told you? No staying up late! You clearly haven't taken my words seriously, have you?!"

"Daniel..."

Maisie's face nuzzled against his broad back, her voice tender as she spoke. "I was wrong, okay? I won't stay up late again... I just really want to do this well, in case something unexpected happens. I don't want to end up with nothing."

Daniel's heart melted instantly. He was only worried about her, so he did not blame her. Upon hearing her say this, he quickly turned around. Seeing her standing barefoot on the floor, he scooped her up like a princess and gently placed her on the sofa.

His gaze showed a hint of helplessness as he smiled, sitting beside her.

"I know you want to do well." He held her hand. "But your health is more important, right?"

Maisie nodded quickly.

"If you continue to neglect your health and stay up every night, then I'll have to move in with you to supervise you!" He teased her with a smirk.

Maisie knew exactly what he was up to, so she blushed slightly and pushed him.

"Do you want something to eat now?"

"Not really..." Maisie stretched lazily. "I'm still a bit sleepy. I want to sleep some more."

"Okay."

Daniel tucked her in, gently closing the bedroom door and instructing the hotel staff not to disturb them.

However, being alone in the suite was a bit boring for him. Left with nothing else to do, he ended up at the desk. Seeing that her computer was still on, he thought of turning it off for her. When he was about to do it, he accidentally noticed the manuscript she had been editing.

He furrowed his brows. Honestly, he was curious to know what she had written and why she kept revising it repeatedly without success. If he could help her by taking a look or figuring out the problem... After some contemplation, Daniel sat at the desk and began to read attentively. However, a particular segment caught him off guard.

[She started to become erratic, not recognizing him. She still fantasized that the child was in her belly, a five-month-old fetus. She often touched her stomach, smiling as she asked the doctor why her belly wasn't showing after five months...]

Tiny beads of sweat dotted Daniel's nose. This had been... her condition after the miscarriage, hadn't it?

He continued flipping through the pages, finding many details resembling her state when her mental health hadn't been good. Daniel's heart fell with a thud. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the mouse. Could she have remembered something?

At that moment, his phone suddenly rang. Startled, he refocused and saw Lily's name on the screen.

"Hello, it's me!" Lily's voice came through. "Are you with Maisie now? I'd like to talk to you for a bit. You better keep this from her."

"Uh... She stayed up late last night working on her manuscript and is currently asleep." Daniel glanced at the bedroom, then walked to the balcony, making sure to close the sliding door. "Do you need something?"

"It's not anything urgent." Lily hesitated. "Well, I'll just be straightforward... As Camila's cousin, how well do you know her as a person?"

Daniel squinted, lowering his voice. "What do you mean by that?"

Chapter 1743

Chapter 1743

Lily considered it for a moment and honestly told him, "Your little rabbit's manuscript didn't pass again. It needs further revisions."

"I know." Daniel's voice was low. "So, what exactly are your standards for publishing books? Also, I came across a... strange passage. I don't understand what's going on."

Lily didn't know what he meant by that. As a boss, she couldn't read every book cover to cover. Sometimes, she only sampled a small portion, moving on to the next stage if everything seemed fine.

"What passage?" she asked in confusion. "No one has informed me! Have you read her manuscript? Do you find it strange too?"

"I..." Daniel hesitated. After all, that part of the past was a wound for Maisie and a scar he found hard to heal.

Although Lily was aware of Maisie's troubled history, she wasn't familiar with the specific details. Daniel didn't want to make things too clear to her.

"Never mind," he said in a low voice. "Maybe I lack artistic appreciation and can't understand literature. But I know Maisie has revised it many times, and this is the second time I've found her up so late to do so!"

"Oh..." Lily pondered this. "Well, despite all those revisions, her manuscript still didn't pass."

"Why?"

"When it comes to such professional matters, I don't have the final say," Lily admitted. "After all, Camila is Maisie's editor, and her opinion carries a lot of weight. But personally, I don't think there's a big issue with Maisie's book. I've said it before, it won't top the bestseller list, but it has a good chance of gathering a small group of die-hard fans!"

"So... does she need to keep making changes?"

Lily sighed. "This is why I called you. The issue is, how well do you know your cousin? She's worked for several publishing companies before and she has some achievements under her belt. Was her work style always like this? Was she always so... obsessed with perfection and satisfaction?

"Daniel, if that's the case, we might fall behind schedule. I've already contacted various channels and set a publishing date. We're just waiting for this book to be released!"

Daniel contemplated it.

Lily had left him in a state of doubt. Although Camila was his cousin, he had never paid attention to this particular family member. Or rather, Camila had no noteworthy characteristics in the Quimby family. She had an innocent appearance and she was usually reserved. At family gatherings, while other younger relatives sought favor with the elders, she'd always kept her distance.

What kind of ulterior motive could a person like her possibly have?

Yet, it was precisely people like her who gave Daniel an indescribable sense of unease.

He involuntarily recalled that one time when Camila had taken the initiative to mention the encounter between her and Owen... Had she really been "honest"?

Daniel narrowed his eyes. After hanging up on Lily, he called his assistant.

"Mr. Quimby, any instructions for me?"

"Last time I asked you to keep an eye on Owen. Any progress?"

His assistant pondered the question for a moment. "There's been nothing so far. He's been quite well-behaved lately. Just the usual gambling and drinking. Nothing out of the ordinary."

"Did he meet Camila?"

"Only once."

Daniel nodded, his voice deep. "Add a couple more people and continue to watch them."

"Mr. Quimby, is there something up with Owen that we haven't noticed?"

"He might not be the one with the issue, but Camila." However, without concrete evidence, Daniel couldn't jump to conclusions. "Just do as I say. If there's any news, inform me immediately!"

Chapter 1744

Chapter 1744

The next day, when Maisie arrived at the publishing company and handed over the revised manuscript to Camila, she felt a bit uneasy.

Camila glanced at it and praised her. "Much better than last time. Keep it up!"

"Really?" Maisie widened her eyes in disbelief.

Lately, the constant revisions had left her mentally exhausted, and the repeated rejections had significantly undermined her confidence. Camila saying it was better this time was almost unbelievable. "R-Really?" She was still skeptical. "You think it's fine?"

"There are still some minor details to polish." Camila smiled and showed her a few books on the computer, all of them regulars on the bestseller lists.

"These are authors I helped promote when I was an editor," Camila explained, looking at her. "They were once unknown but later became very successful, so you need to trust my judgment. I can sense marke trends, heh. Follow my revision suggestions and it'll be fine!"

"Okay."

"But..." Camila furrowed her brows with a wry smile. "I've never had an author like you before, one going through so many revisions."

Maisie's expression changed slightly.

They were in the office, and other colleagues were around, so Camila's words were exceptionally clear. Maisie felt like everyone's gaze was stabbing her. Feeling a bit awkward, she nervously tugged at the hem of her clothes.

"It's okay, it's okay!" Camila quickly reassured her. "Maybe good things come to those who wait. After all, your book has been polished for so long that it will definitely turn out good!"

Maisie forced a smile. Saying she wanted to catch up on some sleep, she turned and left the office.

Instead of going home, she went to the coffee shop downstairs and ordered an iced Americano. The bitter taste that greeted her tongue made her mood even worse.

Maisie was about to ask the waiter for some sugar when she overheard familiar voices coming from the adjacent table. She recognized the literary agents of several other authors of the company, who were casually discussing something.

"Has anything big happened in our company recently?"

"It seems not... My big shot is preparing for a new book. How about you?"

"Mine needs a break for a while to get inspired, so I'm quite free these days."

"Camila is not free, though. She's busy from morning till night."

"Yeah! She has to deal with that author. Heard she was shoved onto her by Ms. Reyes?"

Maisie's heart lurched, and she held her breath, listening carefully.

"Not exactly... The big financial supporter behind Maisie is Daniel. Daniel is Camila's cousin. If she doesn't edit for Maisie, who else will?"

"It's nice to have a financial supporter!" someone said with a laugh. "Heard that Camila has worked for other publishing companies before and created several top-tier authors. All of them have written bestsellers! But since she came here, dealing with Maisie alone has been enough for her. Despite so many revisions, the manuscript still hasn't passed!"

"Let's not say that." Another person lowered their voice. "After all, they're family. In the end, Camila will have to call Maisie her cousin-in-law!"

The group chuckled, but Maisie's heart felt battered and pockmarked with uncertainty.

Chapter 1745

Chapter 1745

"Some people are just so lucky!" Someone sighed. "So young and already someone's in-law. If you ask me, we should all find a wealthy old man!"

"Haha, can you find one? If you can, you won't have to keep suffering here by revising manuscripts!"

"Hahaha..."

Maisie pushed her coffee aside and quickly got up to leave.

Stepping out of the coffee shop, she took a deep breath, feeling as if a large stone was stuck in her heart. She began to doubt whether she should have entered this line of work. If she were still in Centrolis, back in that kindergarten, perhaps life would be much more comfortable...

Maisie shook her head, quickly dispelling these cowardly thoughts. Coming to Cumulus City was a decision she had made with Daniel. Besides, who could expect everything to go smoothly? If she retreated at the first setback, not only would she look down on herself, but Daniel might also lose faith in her.

Maisie forced a smile to encourage herself.

At that moment, a shout suddenly echoed. "Quick, call an ambulance! There's a pregnant woman here!"

Maisie was startled. Not far away, a crowd had gathered at a street corner. A pregnant woman was lying on the ground, sweating profusely in pain.

Maisie managed to figure out what had happened by listening to the discussions among the crowd.

"Ah, such a young girl. And so pretty. Why be someone's mistress?"

"It's a mess. Her belly is getting big, and the man doesn't want to take responsibility."

"Yeah, I heard her negotiating with that guy just now. It didn't work out, and the man left her behind, so she..."

Maisie's heart clenched. The blood under the girl, the glaring red color of it, seemed to pierce a corner of her memory.

"H-Help..." the girl cried in pain. "Save me!"

Maisie felt like she had been struck on the head, her mind going blank for a moment.

"It's such a tragedy!" Someone shook their head. "There's a life in her belly, and it looks like she's only four or five months pregnant..." "How could a child be used as a bargaining chip!"

"It's because young girls are too vain nowadays. Instead of working hard, they want to find a wealthy man..."

"1

Suddenly, Maisie had a splitting headache.

She rushed over as if she couldn't control herself, separating the girl from the surrounding people. She protected her like a warrior, shielding her from the comments and gossip. When the ambulance arrived, she realized that she had been holding the girl's hand so tightly and so stiffly that she could barely release it.

"Where is her family?" the paramedic shouted.

Maisie followed the girl onto the ambulance in a daze.

Emergency care, hospitalization, paperwork-Maisie personally took care of every single step.

She paid the surgery fees, the hospitalization fees, acting like a family member waiting anxiously outside the emergency room. However, she didn't understand why she was doing this. She only felt a headache, the pain spreading from her head to her chest. Her heart felt as if it were being crushed.

The doctor walked out of the operating room and, seeing the distressed expression on Maisie's face, asked, "Are you a family member?"

"I..." Maisie only came to her senses then, looking at the doctor as though she had just woken from a dream. "I'm not."

"Where is her family?"

"I... don't know," Maisie said softly. "I'm just a passerby. I saw her lying on the ground, so I brought her to the hospital." The doctor looked thoughtful. "People as helpful as you are rare nowadays."

"How is she?"

Chapter 1746

Chapter 1746

"She's not in a critical condition at present, but her emotions can't fluctuate anymore. Otherwise, the baby won't be able to hold on."

Maisie nodded, leaning against the wall as if she had released a breath she didn't know she was holding.

After the doctor got the girl settled in, she entered the hospital room. There, she saw the girl lying on the bed, pale and thin, with only her belly protruding prominently.

Maisie's heart clenched, and she walked slowly toward the bed.

The girl opened her eyes, a grateful look in her mournful gaze. "I heard from the nurse that... a kind person brought me to the hospital and even paid my hospitalization fees. It was you, right?"

Maisie pursed her lips, her eyes a bit teary as she sat by the bedside, looking at the girl.

"Thank you," the girl said solemnly, tears suddenly streaming down her face.

Maisie hurriedly pulled out some tissues to wipe her tears. "Don't be so sad. You're still young. You can start anew."

"It's impossible." The girl shook her head in despair. "He doesn't want the child and he will never want me again..."

"You..."

"What I've done isn't honorable. This is my retribution." The girl smiled bitterly. "I was with him because my family needed money. I thought we could make a fair deal, each of us getting what we needed, but I... I fell in love with him."

A thunderous roar echoed in Maisie's mind, and her heartbeat involuntarily accelerated. Her temple throbbed with pain.

Some blurry images resurfaced in her mind, but whenever she tried to focus on them, her head felt like it was about to split open.

"Ms. Squire, you're here!"

Some people came in just then-Daniel's subordinates.

Maisie was taken aback. "Why are you here?"

"Mr. Quimby has a friend at this hospital, and his friend saw you here," one of them explained in a low voice. "Mr. Quimby is rushing over. He will be here soon."

Maisie furrowed her brows. She feared this might disturb the girl's rest, so she stepped out.

"Ms. Squire, are you okay?" A subordinate looked at her nervously.

"I'm fine, it's the girl inside," Maisie said with concern. "Bring her some food and necessities. She... She's alone and she's quite pitiful."

The subordinate immediately went to arrange that while Maisie paced in the corridor.

Daniel arrived soon. Upon seeing her, he immediately pulled her into his embrace.

"I'm sorry," Maisie whispered. "Did I scare you? I just happened to come across a pregnant woman in need of emergency help and brought her to the hospital..."

Daniel looked at her quietly, his gaze indulgent.

He took Maisie home, but she remained silent throughout the journey. She seemed as if her soul had been drawn out and she looked pale.

He hugged her, feeling sorry for her. "Were you frightened for that pregnant woman? Don't involve yourself in roadside rescues like this again... It's partly my fault for not assigning more people to follow you today."

"No." Feeling tired, Maisie closed her eyes, leaning into his embrace. "Daniel, my head... It hurts a lot. I want to sleep. Can you stay with me?"

"Of course." Daniel smiled, agreeing gladly.

He lay down beside her, stroking her long hair and patting her back as though he was soothing a child to sleep.

However, Maisie's sleep was restless.

Daniel got out of bed carefully and walked to the balcony to call his subordinate.

"Mr. Quimby, we followed your orders and have been guarding the hospital all along."

"Okay." His deep voice resonated. "Find anything?"

"The pregnant woman... has been transferred to another hospital, a private one. Our people have been at the hospital's entrance and they spotted a car of the Quimby family."

Chapter 1747

Chapter 1747

A car of the Quimby family?

Daniel froze. "Whose?"

"Judging from the license plate, it seems to be... from your second uncle's household."

"What?"

Daniel frowned. His second uncle's family had always kept to themselves, never meddling in any family or group matters. They simply enjoyed the benefits of the Quimbys without questioning anything. So why would his car appear at the hospital?

Daniel, who was puzzled, could only instruct his subordinates to keep a close eye on it.

Maisie slept extremely restlessly, plagued by one strange dream after another. In her dreams, she returned to that small vintage house and heard the cries of a baby upstairs...

She woke up with a start, drenched in sweat, her pillow already wet.

Concerned about her health, Daniel informed Lily, asking her to let Maisie rest for a few more days. Lily, who understood, adjusted the contract terms and extended Maisie's submission deadline.

Despite making that change, she was puzzled. Why would Maisie suddenly end up like this?

Daniel told her that Maisie had encountered a pregnant woman.

Lily looked perplexed. "Why did she happen to run into that kind of thing? It's such a coincidence!"

"Yes." Daniel's expression darkened. "I've already ordered an investigation. That pregnant woman seems suspicious."

"I have always thought that it's better to kill a thousand by mistake than let one slip through!" Lily smiled. "Perhaps it's extreme, but when it comes to protecting someone, it's not excessive. That's why I support your actions!"

"Thank you."

"If there's anything I can help with, feel free to ask."

As soon as Lily finished speaking, someone knocked on the office door.

Camila walked in with a smile, reporting the latest work progress.

"The main problem of the manuscript hasn't been solved," Lily said after listening, looking at Camila. "Tell me, why has progress been so slow?"

"It's... It's my fault." Camila apologized, her face full of regret. "I haven't handled Maisie well. Don't blame her."

"Did I blame her?"

"Yes, yes, it's all my fault!" Camila said hastily. "I didn't guide her properly, which led to her procrastination. I have been negligent."

Lily frowned, then chuckled. Thanks to her extensive experience, she could detect her b*tchy undertone.

She looked down at her cup and couldn't help but chuckle again. Racheal was really a prophet. She had prepared a relative mug in advance for her.

Judging from Camila's recent work performance, however, she was dedicated and impeccable. Besides, she had previously created several bestselling authors and pulled off outstanding achievements. If there were any misunderstandings due to the issue with Maisie, it might not be fair...

Perhaps, Maisie's situation had been just an accident?

Lily pondered it for a moment and said softly, "Let me read the manuscript carefully to see what the problem is."

"No need for that." Camila smiled.

"Why? I'm lightening your workload!"

"There's not much of an issue, actually!" Camila said. "You're so busy, Ms. Reyes. Letting you review the manuscript would be adding to your workload. It's really my responsibility."

Lily waved her hand. "It's all about work. There's no right or wrong."

"Yes, it's all about work." Camila spoke clearly. "Ms. Reyes, this is why there's really no need for you to read it. The fact that you've hired me and pay me such a high salary shows that you trust my abilities, so rest assured. I won't let you down!"

"You..."

Chapter 1748

Chapter 1748

Lily was stunned for a while. She realized that, despite her years of being assertive and dominant, she had encountered a tough nut.

"Racheal!" She dialed the internal line. "Hurry on over!"

"What's wrong, Boss?"

"Whatever it takes, get the latest revised version of Maisie's manuscript from Camila's computer!"

"Well... Does Ms. Squire not have it?" Racheal was confused.

"I strongly suspect the versions are different. Otherwise, why wouldn't she give the manuscript to me?"

In the past few days, Maisie had been resting at the hotel. Daniel tried to spend time with her, but due to numerous corporate affairs, he couldn't be by her side 24 hours a day.

Maisie didn't know what was happening herself. Since rescuing that pregnant woman, she had been restless. She sometimes suffered from intense headaches, and her mental state had plummeted.

On that particular day, Daniel had initially planned to take her out for a walk. However, an impromptu important meeting came up, forcing him to stay at the company.

Maisie, being considerate, reassured him that he needed not worry and said she was much better. She suggested resting at home for the day, and even if they didn't go out, they could have dinner together when he returned in the afternoon.

"Then you must wait for me," Daniel said softly. "I'll be back in the afternoon, and we'll go out for dinner."

"Okay." Maisie smiled and hung up. When she looked at the clock, it was only ten in the morning. There was still a long day ahead.

She stood on the balcony and stretched lazily, gazing at the bright sunlight and marveling at how quickly the day would slip away. However, someone called her at that moment.

"I heard that you've been on leave for the past few days. Are you okay?"

Maisie froze. Camila's gentle voice sounded concerned, and her words warmed her heart like the sunshine she was currently basking in.

"Have... Have I been putting too much pressure on you? Maisie, I'm really sorry. If it's my fault, I sincerely apologize to you. I want you to get good results. I'm not intentionally making you revise the manuscript over and over. I'm truly sorry..."

"Oh, it's okay," Maisie said softly. "It's my own issue. I haven't been feeling well."

"How are you feeling now?"

"Much better."

"I think you must be under too much pressure." Camila smiled. "Since the weather is nice today, I asked Ms. Reyes for a day off. How about I take you out for a walk?"

"Well..."

Before Maisie could refuse, Camila added, "I'm also doing this for Daniel! Maisie, we'll be family sooner or later. When Daniel can't be with you, is it not okay for me to accompany you?"

Maisie remained silent for a moment. In fact, she didn't have a negative impression of Camila, so she didn't raise her guard around her. Although the things Camila had said last time had made her uncomfortable, as she had just mentioned, they would be family sooner or later. Besides, Camila had probably heard those things from others...

Maisie looked at the blue sky. It felt like she had been cooped up at home for a long time.

"Let's go out!" Camila seized the opportunity. "I know Daniel will get off work in the afternoon. I'll keep you company in the morning and hand you over to him in the afternoon!

"Perhaps going out for a walk will give you some writing ideas? Besides, I also want to discuss the final draft with you."

Upon hearing this, Maisie nodded. "Alright, where should we meet?"

Chapter 1749

Chapter 1749

Camila gave Maisie an address, and Maisie followed her directions to a storefront on a street. Camila's car was parked on the side of the road, and she waved at Maisie with a smile.

"This car looks pretty average, but its performance is excellent!" Camila grinned sheepishly. "Um... this was the first car I bought with my own savings. I've had it for a long time and I'm quite attached to it." Maisie was surprised. She hadn't expected Camila, given her background, to save money on her own.

"You'll understand later. I'm not well-regarded in the Quimby family..." Camila's expression turned somber, but she still made an effort to smile at Maisie. "I'm really happy to be friends with you and work with you. Maisie, you don't look down on me because I'm not valued in the Quimby family, right?"

Maisie's heart clenched. She vaguely remembered Daniel mentioning once that Camila wasn't his fourth uncle's biological daughter. She had been adopted to serve as a placeholder, but after Daniel's fourth uncle and aunt had had biological children, they'd no longer paid attention to Camila.

"No, of course not." Maisie smiled and shook her head. "You're a good person with strong work abilities. Why would I look down on you? Besides, people don't need to live for others. Just be true to yourself." "You're really kind." Camila smiled. "Having a friend like you is enough! By the way, I apologize for making you revise the manuscript over and over..."

"Don't say that. You were doing it for my own good."

Camila glanced at her with a smile. Although Maisie had sharp claws and fangs, most of the time, this cat kept its claws sheathed.

"Camila." Maisie looked at the scenery outside and the gradually thinning crowd. "Where are you taking me?"

"We've been wandering around the city center for a while, so I'll take you to the outskirts!" Camila reassured her. "Don't worry, we won't go far. Just to a place near the outskirts. The scenery is great, and there aren't many people around!"

Maisie nodded, and Camila soon led her to a picturesque area near the outskirts. There were villas built along the mountainside, all in a quaint Eropah style. The blue skies, the white clouds, the scent of flowers, and the song of the birds gave the place an idyllic charm.

Maisie instantly fell in love with it.

"What do you think?" Camila smiled. "I didn't lie, right? Isn't it beautiful here?"

"If I lived here, wouldn't it be like living in fairyland?" Maisie smiled back.

"I don't dare take you to random places, so I brought you here. This villa area was developed by the Quimby Group, so it is considered Daniel's territory!"

The two of them walked along the mountain road, the tranquil environment and fresh air easing the tension in Maisie's nerves. Occasionally, birdsong wafted from the woods like a melodious tune. Observing the mountain scenery from any vantage point was refreshing all the same.

The villas were spaced apart, offering ample space and exuding the Eropah countryside feel.

"Most of these houses are now used for commercial purposes." Camila pointed. "See over there? Several are cafes, and they're quite popular. You might have seen them on social media.

"Over there, they've turned some into B&Bs. The business owners here are savvy. During peak tourism season, many people come here because of the buzz.

"However... some houses were purchased by individuals who want to live here."

Camila walked side by side with Maisie, explaining as they strolled. In a short while, they reached a small courtyard.

This location was relatively secluded, away from the cafes and B&Bs. Besides, it was evident that this was a private residence.

"I heard... that the owner of this house hasn't lived here in a long time," Camila said. "We can go in and take a look!"

"Hey!" Maisie quickly stopped her. "Isn't that a bit inappropriate?"

"It's okay."

Chapter 1750

Chapter 1750

Camila pushed open the courtyard gate, and the house did seem like it had been vacant for a long time. However, the yard was clean, indicating that regular maintenance had been taking place. Yet, as Maisie stepped inside, she suddenly felt a chill. She shivered and stopped in her tracks.

"What's wrong?" Camila turned to look at her, smiling. "Oh, this place happens to be a wind tunnel. There's a mountain breeze here. Let's go inside and it'll be fine!"

Maisie nodded, but the further she went, the more familiar these surroundings seemed...

The Eropah-style pastoral courtyard was adorned with beautiful orchids. Behind the house was a mountain, and the quietness allowed the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves to be heard. The furniture in the house had a vintage feel to it and exuded luxury.

Breathing became difficult for Maisie, and her temples throbbed. She recalled that strange dream more vividly now.

It felt increasingly like she had stepped into that dream...

"Ah-" After standing in the house for a while, Maisie suddenly felt a headache. She covered her ears and screamed while crouching on the floor.

"Maisie, what's wrong?"

"Don't come over!"

"Maisie..."

Camila tried to help her, but Maisie shoved her aside. It felt like a myriad of insects were gnawing at her-every nerve, bone, and blood vessel in her body was torn apart from the pain.

"Maisie, are you okay?" Waiting for her to calm down, Camila gently helped her up.

Maisie's face was pale, and she was trembling. Her large eyes were full of terror.

Camila, however, had a strange smile on her face, even though she appeared concerned.

"Are you feeling unwell?" Camila pretended to care, taking off her coat and draping it over Maisie. "Is it... too cold in this house?"

"I... I want to leave this place..." Maisie couldn't even muster the strength to speak. "Please take me away from here... Please..."

"Okay, don't worry! We'll leave right away." Despite what Camila said, her steps were unusually slow as she supported Maisie. Maisie's legs felt weak, and every step felt like walking in a swamp filled with the fuzzy scenes in her memory.

Camila escorted her back to the hotel and called Daniel.

When Daniel arrived, Maisie had already fallen asleep, surrounded by several doctors.

"Mr. Quimby, rest assured. Ms. Squire is fine, she's just exhausted. Let her rest. It'll be good for her health."

Daniel's voice was deep and anxious. "Are you sure she's okay?"

"Absolutely."

"Then what happened to her today?!" Daniel exclaimed in a low growl.

Camila signaled to the doctors, prompting them all to leave. She met Daniel's icy gaze. The room was eerily quiet, and the man in front of her seemed like a volcano on the verge of erupting.

Camila remained calm as she walked up to him, speaking in a soft voice tinged with a hint of innocence. "Daniel, it's all my fault... You can punish me however you want. I won't complain."
