Chapter 1931
Chapter 1931
Persephone followed Seamus, but her heart lingered in the car. She reluctantly glanced back. Morpheus was still standing there.
She couldn't make out his face in the nighttime darkness, yet she felt his intense gaze following her.
Her nose tingled, and she heard Seamus' voice again. "Miss, please hurry up!"
She paused.
Seamus, anxious and amused, remarked, "If it were still the old days, I'd gladly carry you on my back!"
"Okay, okay," Persephone grumbled. "Aren't I already walking..."
Walking? Seamus couldn't help but chuckle. Persephone's feet felt glued to the ground, each step seeming like she was lifting a ton.
He knew she still held thoughts for the man not far away. He sighed softly and patted her shoulder in a brotherly way. "Miss, time is really pressing... If you still want to see Mr. Orton after we get home, we can send someone-"
Before Seamus could finish, a tremendous explosion echoed from the sea!
It sounded like a roaring demon in the darkness. Persephone suddenly felt dizzy. Accompanying the sound was the earth's trembling and waves of scorching heat!
The air instantly felt like it was on fire, her skin beginning to sear. In the midst of her blank mind, strong arms swiftly pulled her close, and the next moment, she collided with that firm yet familiar chest. "The ship exploded!" Seamus yelled, stunned as he looked toward the sea.
At the same time, shards from the ship's explosion fell like blades from the sky!
Morpheus shielded Persephone with his body. Fragments struck his head and back, leaving bloody marks, but they didn't harm the one in his embrace.
Instinctively, Persephone clung tightly to him. Only in his arms could she find complete security.
The flames soared from the sea, turning half the night sky into crimson. The sound quickly alerted nearby people, and the police swiftly arrived, sealing off the scene.
Everyone present was taken to the police station for questioning.
Persephone and Seamus were separated and taken into different rooms. However, when the police asked her for basic information, she stared blankly at them. She still had not fully recovered from the recent shock. Her mind was blank, unable to articulate anything.
"Miss!" The officer grew impatient, raising his voice. "Your name, date of birth, and home address?"
Persephone bit her lip, struggling to gather her thoughts from the chaotic whirl in her mind.
"I... I'm Persephone Hamerton..."
"Please show your identification."
"I..." She didn't have any identification. Since the day Kourtney kidnapped her, her backpack and everything inside were gone.
"You have no documents?" The suspicion in the officer's gaze intensified. "Then how did you come to Flinge?"
Persephone remained silent with her head lowered.
"Miss, if you can't produce legal documents, we have reason to suspect you're an illegal immigrant. And you might also be involved in this explosion case!"
The officer seemed to put on a show, slamming the table and causing Persephone's heart to jolt.
"Miss, please cooperate with our investigation!"
Just then, a knock at the door interrupted them. Another officer entered and exchanged a few words with the officer inside, whose expression slightly changed before glancing at Persephone. Next thing she knew, she saw a tall shadow that blocked the harsh white light from above.
Chapter 1932
Chapter 1932
Persephone looked up and nearly burst into tears. "Morpheus..."
"It's okay." Morpheus smiled, patting her head. "I'm here. Don't be afraid."
Tears streamed down Persephone's face. She didn't know how she managed to stand up from that hard, tiny chair. Her whole being felt chaotic, yet she could keenly sense the person beside her, giving her strength and offering reassurance.
"She's my wife." Morpheus spoke slowly, his sharp gaze scanning everyone. "We finished dinner, went out for a stroll, happened to be at the dock, and unexpectedly encountered the ship explosion." "Is that true?" The officer remained skeptical.
However, the officer who had just entered the room clearly had a higher rank than the one questioning Persephone. Despite his doubts, he didn't press further.
The officer pondered for a moment, perhaps reluctant, then continued. "Sir, the person in the adjacent room...'
"
"His name is Seamus Rutherford, my wife's cousin." Morpheus' expression didn't change. "He's visiting."
"Why were you all at the dock?"
"Can't we be at the dock at the same time?" Morpheus smirked, his hand resting on Persephone's shoulder, protecting her firmly.
"Is there a law in Flinge that relatives can't meet in the same place?"
"Well..."
"It's just a coincidence. We have no connection to that ship," Morpheus asserted. "And since we were just out for a walk, there was no need to carry identification. If you need it, we can go back to my place for it now!"
"Oh, that won't be necessary." The officer outside smiled, patting Morpheus' shoulder. Their eyes met, communicating everything without words.
"Morpheus is my friend, and I've met his wife," the officer addressed the others. "It's just an accident."
Everyone exchanged glances, and Morpheus left with Persephone confidently.
Persephone was still shaken. The image of the ship's explosion haunted her like a ghost. She felt a chill despite the midsummer heat, shivering several times.
Morpheus took off his shirt to drape it over her, wearing only a tank top, and enveloped her in his strong arms.
"Seamus, Seamus!" Persephone suddenly remembered. "He's still..."
"He's out too." Morpheus' voice was low. "I spoke to them. They won't trouble him."
"You..." Persephone paused. "You spoke to the police?"
Morpheus didn't reply but glanced elsewhere.
Persephone frowned. Who could talk to the police like that? Why did they listen to him, and why did they not trouble her when he intervened?
Could it be...
"Flinge is different from other places." Morpheus turned to face her with an enigmatic look. "It's a lawless zone where nobody has control. My acquaintance with the police is merely because they like watching me in boxing matches, that's all."
"Is that so?"
"Mostly." He remained nonchalant and watched her pale face, which stirred his heart faintly. "Tonight scared you, didn't it?"
Persephone involuntarily leaned forward until her head rested against his chest. Listening to his heartbeat, she finally felt secure. "Let's go home," he said with a smile. "I'll cook you something delicious."
Chapter 1933
Chapter 1933
Morpheus held Persephone's small hand tightly all the way. The evening breeze carried a hint of moisture, shrouding her mind like a mist.
Upon returning home, Morpheus dove straight into the kitchen.
Persephone peeked, catching sight of his broad back and busy demeanor. A wave of complexity washed over her. She had cooled down by now, and the sequence of events threaded together like beads in her mind.
Someone aimed to harm her, plotting her demise, with even those privy to her whereabouts beforehand tampering with the ship...
And how could this person, unless intimately familiar with her, know so much?
Persephone's heart skipped a beat. Suddenly, a fog clouded her vision, making it hard to discern her surroundings.
"Here, try this." Morpheus emerged from the kitchen in no time, presenting a small bowl of rose jelly.
The jelly, sprinkled with raisins and crushed peanuts, revealed beautiful rose petals beneath its crystal-clear surface. She was surprised, meeting his gaze.
"I haven't made this much. Still getting the hang of it," he said softly. "The jelly should have chilled longer. It would've been even tastier with condensed milk, but unfortunately, we don't have any at home." Persephone sat motionless on the couch.
Thinking she might be frightened, Morpheus sat beside her and gently encircled her shoulders. His presence always brought her comfort, but she felt an impulse to push him away this time as she recalled her suspicions earlier.
"If you don't feel like eating, you can rest. I'll put everything in the fridge."
"Morpheus..." She bit her lip, intending to voice her doubts, but the words morphed at the tip of her tongue. "Do you want me to stay?"
Morpheus was startled, not comprehending where her words came from. He softly caressed her hair. "I only hope you'll be okay."
Persephone's heart jolted as she leaned against his shoulder, gently closing her eyes. She had a long dream, sometimes vivid and colorful, at other times a chaotic battlefield. As she frantically searched for someone, he emerged from a pile of bodies, drenched in blood...
Persephone abruptly woke up, panting heavily. Only then did she notice the bright sky. The morning sunlight streamed into the room, accompanied by the chirping of birds outside.
Everything seemed calm as if the explosion from last night hadn't occurred.
She shook her head, got up, and walked out of the room.
Morpheus had just brought breakfast when urgent knocking interrupted.
Morpheus' previously tender gaze turned cautious. He approached the door and peered through the peephole, seeming hesitant for a moment before finally opening it.
"Seamus?" Persephone hurried over, almost embracing him. "Are you okay after last night? I thought you were still at the police station, and you..."
"I'm fine." Seamus' voice was low, and he smiled at her. He never wanted to burden her with negativity.
Seamus glanced at Morpheus. "Mr. Orton... His friend from the police station let me leave."
Persephone was momentarily stunned.
Seamus summarized briefly, ignoring Morpheus' presence, "Persephone, I've investigated. The ship explosion... It's related to our people. There's a mole among us who planted the bomb on the ship. Luckily, we were delayed ashore. Otherwise, it would have been catastrophic!"
"What?!" Persephone was shocked, unable to speak for a while.
A mole-meaning the bodyguards traveling with them were involved!
"So, when we arrived in Flinge and the syndicate ambushed you, it was connected to this person, right?" She quickly connected the dots.
Seamus nodded.
Chapter 1934
Chapter 1934
Persephone's expression changed. She refrained from pressing for details, confident that Seamus would handle everything. What puzzled her was the supposed loyalty of the individuals meticulously chosen by the Hamertons and Thompsons.
Yet, there was a traitor among them, targeting her life!
Seamus said, gripping her arm, "Sephy, don't worry. I'll always protect you."
"Sorry, overheard your conversation." Morpheus' brow furrowed, his gaze heavy on Seamus. "Who do you mean by 'a mole'?"
"This is our business." Seamus avoided disclosing too much. "Mr. Orton, it's better not to ask. But... Sephy might need to trouble you for a while longer."
"Continue staying with me?"
"Yes." Seamus held his gaze.
At this point, he no longer harbored the initial distrust toward Morpheus. He sensed Morpheus genuinely cared for Persephone, providing reassurance.
For now, he couldn't stay by Persephone's side. With the traitor identified, he had to handle it. This person had no vendetta against the Hamertons-everything was orchestrated by someone else. He had to expose the mastermind behind it.
Seamus looked at Morpheus again and said, "Apologies for the intrusion."
"Not an intrusion." After a long silence, Morpheus' tone turned cold. "But are you still not planning to tell me the truth?"
"What?"
Morpheus' chilly gaze locked onto Persephone's face as he asked, "Who are you, exactly?"
Persephone felt like she was stumbling into an abyss, her heart in turmoil.
Both were suspecting and probing each other, slapping labels based on their suspicions. Despite that, she could clearly see a glimmer of something in his eyes that was meant only for her. Taking a deep breath, she clenched her fists and then slowly released them. After a moment, she looked into his eyes and asked in return, "And what about you?"
Morpheus was taken aback.
She continued. "Will you tell me the truth? Why can you freely enter and leave the police station, even exchange words with the cops, and have them release Seamus and me?" Morpheus didn't expect her to ask this and was momentarily lost in thought.
Persephone smiled bitterly. They both concealed things from each other. She never planned to be completely honest with him from the start, and he never intended to be entirely transparent with her.
In a daze, she remembered her childhood-the lack of secrets between her and Greta. They knew everything about each other.
She stared at Morpheus, and he stared back. They scrutinized each other so intensely as if trying to dig out secrets from the other's eyes.
Seamus coughed and tugged Persephone's hand. Just then, there was a knock at the door, and Wynn entered with breakfast and a few cans of beer.
He first looked surprised when he saw Seamus, and then his eyes lit up as if dawn had broken.
"Why... are you all standing around?" He slowly placed the items on the table, noticing Persephone's pale face.
Chapter 1935
Chapter 1935
Nobody paid Wynn any mind, but he didn't mind. He continued to speak with a smile. "I heard some noise last night and knew it was you guys returning... So, I bought some food this morning. Sephy, don't you like this kind of noodles?"
He linked arms with Persephone and led her to the table.
"Did you... fight?" He chuckled. "No worries, let's fill our stomachs first. Then we'll have the energy to continue arguing with him!"
Persephone was momentarily stunned before she couldn't hold back her laughter.
Morpheus silently walked out, followed by the heavy sound of the door closing. Seamus glanced worriedly at Persephone but then received a call and had to leave.
As Wynn watched Seamus leave in a hurry, his hand holding a sandwich and coffee suspended in the air awkwardly. He grimaced.
"Ah... Let's ignore them!" He sat down, coaxing Persephone, "Come, let me mix the noodles for you!"
"I'm not really hungry." Persephone looked at him.
To outsiders, Wynn was a monster they couldn't understand. But in her eyes, he was one of the few people in this world, apart from her family, genuinely good to her.
She didn't have her guard up against him, especially during these low moments of emotional turmoil. Naturally, she gently leaned on his shoulder and closed her eyes, feeling somewhat weary. Wynn reached out, stroking her hair as if comforting a heartbroken younger sister.
He persuaded her to eat a bit, then took her to the mountaintop. It was a view Persephone had never seen before, overlooking lush forests and winding mountain roads. Further down, the entire city lay before her eyes.
Flinge was a city in shades of gray. Even most buildings were gray-walled. At night, though, it boasted the world's most vibrant colors.
Persephone beheld this city from this perspective for the first time, filled with a fresh sense of wonder.
"Feeling better now?" Wynn smiled at her. "Whenever I'm upset, I come here and sit for a while. This place has some kind of magic. It doesn't take long before any worries in my heart unravel!" Persephone turned to him. "Don't you want to ask me... why I left and why I came back?"
Wynn paused for a moment, then shook his head.
"A lot of things don't need to be asked, and you don't need to explain. If you want to talk to me, I'll listen. If you don't, you don't have to force it. You're certainly going to leave because you don't belong here. And coming back..."
He blinked. "It's fate's arrangement."
"Hmm?"
"Fate won't let you leave Morpheus!"
Persephone's heart skipped a beat. She lowered her head, her face seeming feverish.
It was just that with so many doubts surrounding Morpheus...
"Sephy, I don't know what happened between you and Morpheus," Wynn said in a low voice. "But I know he's different with you."
Persephone's gaze twinkled slightly, but she remained silent.
"The ones involved are often confused, and only bystanders can see things clearly." Wynn chuckled. "Morpheus isn't an ordinary person, and no ordinary girl matches him." Persephone forced a smile. "I'm not that special."
"But to him, you're that special someone."
Chapter 1936
Chapter 1936
"Wynn..."
"Morpheus has been kind to me, and I hope for his happiness." Wynn looked at her intently. "And you, you're the only girl in this world who has never looked down on me. I hope... you find even greater happiness than Morpheus."
Persephone choked up, unsure of what to say. Wynn seemed to understand her thoughts. He patted her head, letting everything rest unspoken.
"I've never had a proper romantic relationship." He chuckled bitterly. "But I know love is a beautiful thing. Sephy, you can trust Morpheus." Persephone gazed into the distance thoughtfully. A mist hovered over the sea, shrouding her heart as if she could never see the future clearly. However, Wynn's words had an effect on her.
After descending the mountain, she inexplicably found herself at the place where Morpheus practiced boxing.
The entrance to the underground arena was tightly shut in broad daylight, guarded by people who were vigilant like watchdogs. In spite of this, they recognized her and knew she was Morpheus' wife. This was Persephone's second time coming here. The first time, she had been blindfolded and brought here against her will. Then, she only felt the deafening noise and the murky air. She disliked it and didn't want to come near this place.
Yet, she came on her own this time. She just wanted to see what Morpheus' daily life was like.
"Hey, isn't this dear Sephy?" A provocatively dressed woman walked up.
Kourtney controlled women like her. They worked at night and would come here to watch the fights when they didn't want to sleep during the day but had no place to kill time. Sometimes, they'd bet on the winners and make a small profit.
When they saw Persephone, they acted like they saw a rare sight, talking while trying to touch her. Their eyes carried daggers, scrutinizing her.
Persephone tried to avoid them. Fortunately, Wynn was there to protect her.
After playing around for a while, those women found it boring and dispersed.
One of the women turned around before leaving. She took a puff of smoke, arching her eyebrow at Persephone. "Are you here to find your man?
"He's over there!" She pointed somewhere. "He has a match soon. Go give him a victory kiss! Hahaha..."
Persephone blushed, pushing through the crowd in that direction.
She had already spotted Morpheus. He had changed into sports pants, hands bandaged. His expression was serious, and his eyes betrayed a hint of a killing intent, making his face appear even more stern.
"Do you want to watch Morpheus' match?" Wynn asked softly. "Or... should I take you back? This place, a girl like you can't handle it. It's bloody everywhere, and you'll probably throw up in less than five minutes."
"But I want to see him," Persephone spoke softly but with unusual determination. "I want to see what kind of person he truly is."
"He's different with you than he is with others."
She smiled. "Then I should stay even more."
Persephone stood out like a white rabbit among a group of beastly men, entirely out of place in this environment.
By now, someone had set their sights on her, glaring as if they could strip her clothes off with their eyes.
Morpheus also saw her and was taken aback, rushing over to grab her hand. "Why are you here?"
He looked at Wynn. "Take her away! Who allowed you to bring her here?!"
"Morpheus..."
"I wanted to come." Persephone looked at him. "I wanted to watch your match..." "There's nothing to see!" Morpheus was unusually tense today. "Hurry home, got it?"
Chapter 1937
Chapter 1937
"Wow!" Suddenly, a loud voice came from nearby.
Morpheus' expression changed, and he instinctively shielded Persephone behind him.
"A really fine little beauty!" Louis Newnes walked over. "Morpheus, is this your girl?"
Morpheus' gaze turned cold with a hint of a killing intent. He was preparing to personally escort Persephone out, but Louis intercepted them. "With such a good-looking young lady, you're not even willing to share? We may be opponents in the ring, but aren't we brothers outside?"
Morpheus snorted, spitting out two words sharply, "Fuck off!"
Louis immediately turned fierce. A war between both men was imminent.
Persephone gripped Morpheus' arm, carefully observing the arrogant man.
He had golden hair, well-defined features, and was muscular like a Roman soldier. To Persephone, Morpheus was already strong, yet this foreigner seemed equally powerful.
The two men faced each other like two lions, about to engage in a life-or-death struggle.
Louis sneered, speaking choppy Acian. "Morpheus, it's just a woman. No need to take it so seriously, right?"
"She's my wife." Morpheus stared at him coldly.
"What?" Louis didn't back down but appeared thrilled. His eyes fixated on Persephone as if he would devour her in the next second.
Morpheus warned him in a measured tone, "Stay away from my wife!"
"Hahaha..." Louis laughed arrogantly.
His laughter attracted other fighters who gathered around to watch the commotion. The situation provided an outlet for their pent-up energy, with the underground arena already filled with intense testosterone. Persephone stood behind Morpheus. Although she looked delicate, there was no trace of fear on her face.
The two men faced off, the air thick with tension.
The onlookers were cheering continuously. This wild and beastly scene was a world far removed from Persephone's past.
She didn't know what would happen next but was certain Morpheus was her guardian deity.
All her doubts and frustrations toward him dissipated with his protection at this moment. She felt as if she had glimpsed his heart.
Persephone smiled. It was blooming like a rose among thorns, dazzling and stunning.
The rough men around instinctively stopped cheering, gazing quietly at the small rabbit behind Morpheus.
Even Louis' gaze changed.
Someone rushed in, informing them that the match was about to start.
Morpheus and Louis locked eyes.
Morpheus spoke in a low voice. "Louis, I'll see you in the ring."
He then grabbed Persephone's hand, ready to leave.
"Hey!" Louis shouted, still wearing a disdainful expression. He said something, but it wasn't in Acian. He then laughed maniacally.
Morpheus furrowed his brow, knowing it wasn't pleasant, so he chose to ignore him.
Unexpectedly, Persephone turned to Louis and spoke to him in the same language.
Louis' face suddenly turned ugly.
"What did you guys say?" Morpheus was puzzled.
Persephone crossed her arms, glaring at Louis. "He just spoke Latiumo."
Chapter 1938
Chapter 1938
Then she turned her gaze towards Morpheus. "It means if he wins, you have to let me sleep with him!" Morpheus' stare at Louis turned fierce as he clenched his fists.
Persephone's small hand gently covered his arm.
"Don't you want to know what I said?" She chuckled. "I gave him just two words-go die."
Morpheus was stunned, meeting her playful gaze.
He was surprised that she understood Latiumo.
Immediately, Persephone spoke fluent Latiumo to Louis. "Although I don't know where you're from, I understand your language. Don't think of humiliating my husband or trying anything with me! Sleeping with you is impossible because, in a while, my husband will tear your bones apart in the ring and mail them to your mom!"
After that, she loudly interpreted for everyone present.
The fighters laughed uproariously.
Morpheus was surprised yet slightly moved. He pulled Persephone into his arms, patting her head.
Only Louis became furious, veins popping on his neck. He roared and threw a punch at Morpheus.
Morpheus swiftly raised his hand and caught Louis' fist.
"Save your energy." Morpheus smirked. "After all, this is an underground gambling den, and we signed a life-and-death agreement! Wasting your strength now will be a real loss when you die in the ring later!" "You..." Louis, filled with anger and humiliation, spat on the ground and stormed away from the crowd.
Morpheus turned to look at Persephone. "This isn't where you should be. Hurry and leave."
"I want to watch your match!"
"Persephone!"
"I must stay here!" She smiled. "I want to witness you tearing that guy's bones apart!"
Morpheus widened his eyes, feeling helpless and joyful. He stared at her as if engraving her image into his eyes. He rubbed her head with a smile.
"Then... wait for me."
"I'll be watching from the stands."
"You'll be scared."
"No, I won't!" Persephone asserted. "I know you'll win!"
Morpheus smiled, glanced at her one last time, and turned to stride away.
Wynn brought Persephone to the spectator seats.
The stands were packed. Once the two fighters entered the ring, the entire place vibrated with excitement, cheers threatening to break the roof.
Many in the audience were fanatical gamblers, devoid of reason or thought, focused solely on victory or defeat. Winning meant wealth and honor, while losing meant losing everything. Persephone's heart raced.
She thought, perhaps she wasn't so different from these people. They gambled with money while she gambled with Morpheus' heart.
The match was incredibly intense. Morpheus and Louis were evenly matched. The roars outside the caged ring surpassed each other, the fight inside a stage of life or death.
Every time Morpheus got injured, Persephone's heart clenched. But each time, he rose up, hitting back with fiercer punches.
Blood sprayed in the ring.
Persephone stood dazed among the crowd. Tears streamed down her face, yet she felt nothing. She didn't know if that blood was Morpheus or Louis'. In her blurred vision, Morpheus fell and stood up again, surrounded by deafening cheers...
Chapter 1939
Chapter 1939
Persephone didn't know when the match that day had ended.
Her mind was a blank slate. When she finally came to, the cheers had turned into applause. No one had noticed her before, but now, all eyes were casting envious glances her way. She didn't understand what had happened.
All she cared about was whether Morpheus was alive.
But... where did the person who had just collapsed on the ring go?
As if in a dream, Persephone abruptly opened her eyes to find Morpheus standing right in front of her.
He was covered in injuries all over his body and face, but she found a hint of reality in his warm and steadfast smile.
"Morpheus..."
"This is for you." He held a medal in his hand.
Persephone's heart jolted. She had heard him say that this kind of medal represented the highest honor in the underground arena.
This was something he had earned with his life.
Morpheus smiled, though he was in pain from the wounds on his face being tugged. Yet, he wasn't afraid of the pain. He feared her tears.
He wore the medal around her neck. Like a referee raising a fighter's hand to declare victory, he raised Persephone's hand, letting out a primal cheer...
Persephone threw herself into his arms, holding him tightly.
The excited voices around them seemed to reach the skies, yet all she wanted was to remain on a solitary island with him forever.
After a while, everyone left, and Persephone finally had time alone with Morpheus. She carefully tended to his wounds. With the experience from the last time, she was more skilled this time. She cried silently while tending to his wounds, not letting out a sound. She didn't notice the deep and fiery gaze of the man opposite her.
"I..." It took a while, but Morpheus uttered hoarsely, "I did it."
"Hmm?"
"I did what you asked. I said I'd win."
Persephone's just-dried tears were brought forth by his words.
"Don't cry, don't cry!" He hurriedly wiped her tears, saying the same words as he did after his last injury, "It doesn't hurt at all."
This time, however, his injuries were much more severe than before.
Last time, they were only minor surface wounds, but his opponent this time was Louis, the man who could kill someone with just three punches in the ring.
This was his battle of life and death, and it was also Persephone's fight.
"Morpheus..." Persephone sniffled for a long time, unable to say a complete sentence. Still. she choked out four words amidst her sobs, "I... believe... in... you..."
Those four words deeply stirred Morpheus' heart. The weight of these four words was self-evident to him.
"Really, I trust you." She looked at him. "I shouldn't have doubted you. I've felt how you've treated me during this time. I know... I know you definitely have many secrets, but it's okay. If you want to say them, say them. If not... I won't ask.
"Anyway, I believe in you. No matter what you do, I... I trust you!"
Morpheus was stunned for a long time. A smile slowly spread across his lips. He gently embraced her, his other hand cupping her head.
Before Persephone could react, a passionate kiss landed on her lips...
Her eyes went wide!
She was startled, caught off guard by a wave of confusion and emotions. She instinctively pushed him away, but the moment her hands touched his firm chest, she surrendered.
Chapter 1940
Chapter 1940
The surreal sensation made Persephone feel like she was floating in the clouds. She felt a bit shy but couldn't bring herself to refuse.
Morpheus' kiss was intense and fervent as if he wanted to pour all his passion into that one kiss. He wished to transform that moment into eternity.
"I like you," he murmured against her lips, his voice husky. "Sephy, don't leave me..."
Persephone instinctively nodded along. She was engulfed in heat, every cell in her body ablaze, every inch of her skin ignited by him.
At night, Morpheus found himself on that battlefield again in his dreams.
It was a scene of devastation, bloodshed everywhere, much like the fight with Louis in the ring today. He trod upon the bloodstains and gradually moved forward, even doubting if this was a dream or reality.
He kept calling out those names, those who had fought alongside him, yet they all turned into wisps of smoke, fleeting past him.
"You'll never find them!" Suddenly, a deep voice echoed from above.
Morpheus was startled, looking around, only to gradually make out a figure in the mist.
"Morpheus, do you want to kill me again?"
Morpheus stood there, stunned. He felt as though someone was stripping his bones and tendons away.
Patricide was probably the most agonizing thing in this world. He was supposed to share blood ties with this man, yet he had to aim a gun at him.
Morpheus' lips quivered. After a while, he finally uttered that word, "Father..."
At the prime of his life, he had never thought he would confront his biological father on a battlefield.
His father stared at him with an icy expression, a cryptic smile playing on his lips.
"If you kill me, you lose everything. You won't get anything, including that girl!"
Morpheus widened his eyes, and his breathing became difficult.
"You're an extreme and fragile person. A single war has defeated you! You'd rather fight in underground matches than to return to Southeast Aciatic and face everything! What right do you have to be with that girl? Can you make her happy?"
Morpheus desperately shook his head, wanting to argue but unable to utter a single word.
"You're not capable of making her happy!
"She's a noble swan, and you're a dog stuck in the mud!
"If you're with her, she'll be miserably dragged down by you!"
"No!" Morpheus roared, abruptly waking up from the dream, covered in cold sweat.
The clock struck precisely at that moment, the hands pointing at 4:00 a.m.-the darkest hour before dawn.
Morpheus composed himself and splashed cold water on his face in the bathroom. The icy sensation couldn't dissipate the heat and restlessness within him. After a long while, he managed to calm himself down.
He walked out and looked at Persephone. She was sound asleep on the couch. He went over to tuck the blanket around her properly. Her feet would always kick around whenever she slept, and her sleeping posture was never graceful.
Morpheus chuckled softly, his bandaged hand lightly brushing her hair. She moved a bit, seemingly dreaming something joyful.
Yet, a tender spot in his heart ached intensely.
Yes, with all his secrets, what did he have to make her happy?
Although he didn't know much about her background, he could tell she was a girl who had been well-protected since childhood. She should be looking for a partner like Seamus, not someone like him... Morpheus' nose tingled. He gently kissed her forehead and picked up his phone to send a message.
This time, he would personally escort her away from this place.
