Never Late, Never Away Chapter 2081

“Huh? Ms. Young isn't back yet?” Joan turned to look at Larry.

“Goodness, it slipped my mind entirely. Hurry up and give her a call,” Larry urged at once.

Just after Joan had picked her cell phone up, a crash rang out the next moment. Perchance due to her anxiety, her cell phone slipped to the floor, and the screen cracked.

“What's going on? What's this sense of unease that I simply can't shake off? It's as though something bad is imminent,” she muttered.

“Don't let your imagination run wild. I'll call her instead.” Larry made the call right away.

However, no one answered even after a long time had passed. Lucius then started panicking, and his eyes grew red.

“Mom, shall we go and have a look at the garden?” he suggested.

“Sure.” The three of them hurried over to the garden.

“Ms. Young?” Joan called out, but no reply came from around her.

“Grandma?” Lucius hollered at the top of his lungs.

What exactly is going on? The door is open, so why isn't she here? A trace of fear manifested in Joan's eyes. Don't tell me something has happened to her?

“Grandma!” All of a sudden, Lucius started wailing. “Mom, Grandma is here! Come quickly!”

Upon hearing that, Larry and Joan instantly rushed over, only to be greeted by the sight of Delilah lying on the ground with her eyes closed.

There was a hint of blood at the corner of her mouth, and she was clutching a flower tightly in both hands.

“Ms. Young! Wake up, Ms. Young...” Joan shook her body forcefully.

“Calm down, Joan. We're going straight to the hospital, so bring Lucius along! Hurry!” As Larry said that, he scooped Delilah up and strode toward the car.

Thank God, traffic was smooth throughout the drive to the hospital. In the car, Joan grasped Delilah's petite hand tightly, her eyes shimmering with tears.

“Mom, what's wrong with Grandma?” Lucius sobbed.

In no time, the car came to a stop in front of the hospital. “Doctor! Quick, there's a patient here who requires immediate treatment!”

In the flash, doctors and nurses dashed over.

Outside the emergency room, Joan hovered at the door with her hands tightly clasped together. Meanwhile, Lucius dashed his tears away while sitting on the chair.

Such an incident has never before happened to Ms. Young, and she has always been in great health. Why did she suddenly pass out today? Is she keeping something from me?

Click! After an indeterminate time, the light above the emergency room finally went off.

“Doctor, how is Ms. Young's condition? Is it serious?” Joan promptly blocked the doctor's path.

“As her daughter, how could you have been so careless? If she hadn't received timely treatment, she might not have survived. She's already up in years, so don't have her bustling about anymore. She must be worn out every day, yes? You should let her rest well. Remember this—once someone gets up in years, accidents may happen anytime...” the doctor lectured.

Trembling, Joan listened to every single word out of the doctor's mouth.

He's right. Ms. Young goes to the garden every day. The flowers there require tending, not to mention that there are a lot of them. On top of that, I've been staying in the house for the past few days to lie low, so I haven't been to the garden to help her out...

She hung her head as intense guilt assailed her.

“Alright, don't blame yourself too much. Just have a care in the future, and it'll be fine. On the whole, Ms. Young is quite fit, so it's just over-exhaustion.” The doctor then spun around and left.

In the ward, Ms. Young attempted to open her eyes as she lay on the bed, only to realize that she didn't even have that much energy.

“Are you hungry, Ms. Young?” Joan inquired.

“Huh? Am I still alive? I thought...” All of a sudden, Delilah gave a cough.

“What are you saying, Grandma? You're not a hundred years old yet!” Lucius countered.

“Ah, how I love you, my beloved grandson!” At that exact moment, Larry slipped out and went into the doctor's office right next door.

“Doctor, be frank with me. Is there some other problem with Ms. Young's health?” At his question, the doctor opposite him turned conflicted with discomfiture written all over his face.

“Doctor, we have the right to know about Ms. Young's condition,” Larry insisted.

Never Late, Never Away Chapter 2082

“But the patient herself requested to have her medical information kept secret...”

“This is a matter of life and death!” Larry panicked upon hearing that.

“Alright, then. To tell you the truth, Ms. Young has been diagnosed with cancer...”

So, it turns out that Ms. Young is well aware of all this! Distress engulfed Larry when he learned about that.

“Is there any possibility of treatment and recovery?” he queried in a shaky voice.

“It can be treated, but Ms. Young herself declined that option.” While speaking of that, the doctor lowered his head.

Well, as long as there's hope, treatment is imperative!

“Actually, she had been here for an examination two days ago. She came alone then. Her cancer is at the early stage, so operation is feasible, but she said it's a waste of money...” the doctor expounded.

No wonder he spoke at length at the emergency room door earlier. Under normal circumstances, the doctor would only say a few words after a patient was out of the woods. However, this doctor spoke for close to half an hour. And that was also why he grew suspicious.

In the ward, Joan and Lucius had their gazes pinned anxiously on Delilah while sitting by the bed.

“Okay, that's enough. I'm not dead yet, so why are you two crying?” Delilah forced a smile.

“Grandma, you really gave us a scare just now,” Lucius murmured.

Joan, on the other hand, knew that Delilah's condition was definitely nowhere as simple as the doctor had claimed earlier since she looked worse for wear.

“You're awake, Ms. Young?” Larry suddenly walked in with slightly red eyes.

“Eh, why are you here? Ah, the two of you shouldn't have called him over when you know full well that he has tons of work to do every day,” Delilah groused.

A wave of anguish surged within Larry, but still, he tried his best to compose himself.

“Joan, why don't we go and buy some breakfast for Ms. Young and Lucius? They must be hungry by now.” He patted her on the head lightly.

“Okay.” In the ward, Lucius and Delilah chatted while laughing. Meanwhile, in the corridor, doctors and nurses were busy going back and forth between the ward and pharmacy with anxious expressions on each of their faces. They were all cautious and serious, afraid of making a single misstep.

“Larry, what exactly is wrong with Ms. Young?” Joan halted in her tracks as she tugged at the hem of his shirt.

She has figured it out, after all. Oh well, that's par for the course with her!

“She has been diagnosed with cancer, but don't worry, for it can still be treated. However, she doesn't want to do so. Thus, you've got to convince her...” Larry explained.

What? How could she have kept such a serious illness from me? And it's treatable, yet she's giving up? What on earth is she thinking? Does she really have nothing else left for her in this world? Is she not reluctant to part with Lucius? No, I'll never allow that to happen!

“Okay, I'll do my best to persuade her to accept treatment!” Joan's eyes shone with determination.

After buying breakfast, they both went back to the ward.

“Look, Grandma. They're adorable, aren't they?”

“Yup! You're right, Lucius!” The two people in the ward were chatting happily as though Delilah weren't sick.

“Come, come, breakfast is here. Come and have breakfast...” Joan called out.

She had been standing at the door with Larry for a long time before entering the ward because both their eyes were red-rimmed then. Hence, it was glaringly obvious that they had cried.

“Mom, Dad, why did you take so long? I'm starving!” Lucius exclaimed cheekily.

Thereafter, they all gathered together and had breakfast. They engaged in small talk, particularly the weather, so the atmosphere turned a touch awkward.

After breakfast, Larry drove Lucius to school, leaving Joan and Delilah in the ward.

“Let's go and have a stroll in the backyard,” Joan suggested softly.

“Sure! I'm thinking of taking a look at the flowers in the backyard anyway.” Delilah chortled.

She simply couldn't do without the flowers, her mind lingering on them even when she hadn't seen them for only a day, wondering whether they would wilt or lack water and nutrients...

Never Late, Never Away Chapter 2083

The sky was blue, and clouds drifted along with the gentle breeze. Amidst the serene surroundings, flowers vied with each other in terms of beauty. On the whole, everything seemed to be thriving.

Ah, it's so good to be alive! Delilah heaved a sigh. Alas, I don't have much time left.

“Ms. Young.” Joan slowly walked over to her front with a solemn expression. “Why don't you accept treatment? Just an operation will do,” she pleaded in a quivering voice.

Huh? How did she know about that? Delilah stared at her dubiously as mystification bubbled within her.

“What are you talking about, Joan? Look, those flowers are really blooming nicely.” Delilah deliberately changed the subject.

“Don't keep me in the dark anymore, Ms. Young. Both Larry and I know about your condition. We'll stay by your side until you're healthy again, so please accept treatment. I beg you.” Joan grasped her hands tightly as her eyes stung.

I can't lose her! She saved me, and she's also Lucius' grandmother!

“You know what, Joan? It's not that I don't want to accept treatment. It's just that I'm already old, so there's no need for that. Besides, I've already donated the money.”

“It's okay, for money isn't a problem to us. As long as you're willing to accept treatment, we'll immediately arrange for an operation. Ms. Young, Lucius is still young, so he can't lose you.” Joan stared at her earnestly.

That's right! Lucius is still young! But what can I do? There's no more time left for me, so I won't be able to see him attend college, get married, and have children. I won't be able to hang on until then.

“Please, Ms. Young, I beg you to accept treatment. Lucius and I need you. In fact, everyone in the village needs you!”

That remark of hers had Delilah wavering slightly.

She had been living in that village for decades, so she was naturally reluctant to leave it.

“Don't bother. There's no cure for my illness. It'll be better to donate the money to those impoverished children in the village who can't afford to attend school.” She shook her head in resignation.

She's such a kind person. Oh God, why did she have to contract such an illness? At that, Joan dipped her head in anguish.

“Ms. Young, when you've recovered, we'll donate however much you want to donate, okay? But for now, let's treat your illness first. The doctor has said that you'll definitely make a full recovery as long as you undergo an operation, coupled with recuperation later,” she then asserted in slight nervousness and anticipation.

Will I really make a full recovery? But how could one fully recover from cancer? Could it be that she's merely consoling me?

“Ms. Young, perhaps you don't know this after having lived in the village for such a long time, but medical equipment nowadays is very advanced. Thus, you don't need to worry at all...”

The two of them chatted in the backyard for a long time. Finally, Delilah relented because she was reluctant to part with this world.

“I thought the doctor was merely consoling me when he said that my illness could be treated. I didn't know that there have been cases of success,” Delilah muttered.

Meanwhile, Joan luxuriated in the fact that she wasn't at the final stage.

“Ms. Young, no matter what happens in the future, you must tell us. Regardless of how difficult it may be, we're a family, so we need to face and resolve it together.”

Lucius had no idea about Delilah's condition, nor did Joan and Larry plan on telling him. He was still young, after all, so they felt that it was better to keep him in the dark.

“Mom, when can Grandma be discharged?” Lucius stared at Joan while blinking his eyes in curiosity.

In reality, he had long since doubted the truth of the matter since Delilah couldn't possibly be hospitalized for so long if it were merely a paltry illness.

“You've got to be good every day, Lucius. I need to take care of your grandmother in the hospital...” Joan patted him on the head lightly.

Lucius was very smart, so he hadn't missed all the things that didn't add up. Rather, he just didn't want to bring it up.

“Then, will Grandma recover?” he asked gingerly.

“Of course! You've got to study hard, for your grandmother will be allowed home the day you get a merit certificate.”

“Really? That's great! In that case, I'll go and study now so that I can get a few more merit certificates!” As Lucius spoke, he skipped back to his room.

Never Late, Never Away Chapter 2084

“Joan, how's Ms. Young doing lately?” Larry inquired out of the blue.

“She's doing pretty well. She has already agreed to accept treatment, so don't worry.”

That was undoubtedly great news to the family.

The next day, Joan headed to the hospital early in the morning. By then, Larry had already transferred Delilah to a VIP room that was equipped with every amenity. In fact, it resembled a small suite. However, Lucius had been rather emotional recently, so Joan had no choice but to commute between the hospital and home every day. It was now better, for his emotions had stabilized, so she could just stay in the hospital.

“How's Lucius, Joan?” Delilah asked weakly.

“Don't worry, for he's doing good. Besides, Larry is there to take care of him.” Joan flashed her a smile.

Basically, Larry was already home when Lucius' classes ended. While there was indeed much to be done at the company, someone still needed to take care of the child.

“Dustin dropped by this morning,” Delilah remarked softly.

Hmm? Why did he drop by? Tilting her head thoughtfully, Joan plunged into deep contemplation.

“He said that as long as I cooperate, I'll definitely make a full recovery.” Undeniably, he's quite glib.

“Oh, you're here, Joan?” The hospital room door was pushed open in the next moment.

“Um... How did you know about Ms. Young being hospitalized?” Joan looked at him curiously.

“Hey, what did you mean by that? We all live in the same village, so how could I possibly not know when everyone in the supermarket knows about it? You're talking as though I'm heartless!” Dustin threw her a glance before fiddling with the plastic bag in his hand.

“Here, Ms. Young. I bought these especially for you. Moving forward, you must have a balanced diet. Remember to eat more fruits and vegetables. Don't worry about anything else, and rest assured that you'll definitely make a full recovery. I believe in you.” He then made a fist pump in encouragement.

As Joan looked on, her lips curved into a smile.

Sometimes, he's quite humorous. But I just can't fathom why he hasn't gotten a girlfriend when he's such an outstanding man. Or could it be... No, that's impossible. In fact, it's out of the question. How could he possibly still be stuck on me after such a long time?

In truth, feelings were bizarre. Despite a certain matter appearing impossible to some, it was actually a reality to others.

“Have breakfast, Joan. I bought your share as well,” Dustin urged with a smile.

“Thank you.”

On the hospital bed, Delilah had mixed feelings as she gazed at the two of them. She knew that the person Joan loved was Larry. Yet, the person Dustin loved was Joan. Moreover, she knew that Dustin was surreptitiously helping Joan behind her back. Of course, he was also furtively scheming against Larry.

“Has the nurse came over?” Dustin queried in concern.

“No, but she'll be here shortly. Oh yes, I'll go and get some hot water. There's no water dispenser here in the kitchen, so I'll have Larry bring one over in the afternoon.” As Joan said that, she left the hospital room with a thermos flask in her hand.

“Say, why are you so stubborn?” Delilah gazed at Dustin meaningfully.

Once, I thought he wanted to break Larry and Joan up. But I'm really curious as to why he hasn't made a move after such a long time, merely keeping watch over Joan silently.

“What do you mean, Ms. Young?” Dustin chuckled awkwardly.

“She's already married and even has a child, so you should give up. Let her go, and let yourself go. Is that not so? Also, I know all about the shares you have in Norton Corporation, so don't try playing any tricks,” Delilah warned as she pointed a finger at him.

Indeed, she knew everything, even things Joan had no knowledge of.

“It looks like you're quite a formidable character, Ms. Young.” Dustin eyed her while peeling an apple.

I'm already in my golden years now, so how am I still formidable? It's just that I've seen through a lot of things, so I don't want the young people around me to repeat the mistakes committed by those before them.

“You're a good man, but you're simply too obstinate at times. Why don't you find yourself a woman to spend the rest of your life with, like Larry and Joan. Isn't that good...”

Never Late, Never Away Chapter 2085

“Ahh!”

Joan suddenly screamed in fright.

“Go find out what's happening,” Delilah quickly instructed.

Dustin tossed the apple onto the table and dashed out of the ward.

“What's wrong? Are you okay? Let me have a look,” he said, blowing onto Joan's hand.

“I'm sorry. I didn't mean it,” another patient's family member apologized.

“Why did you leave while getting water? Don't you know she's still here?” Dustin bellowed.

“It's fine. It's not like it was on purpose,” Joan chimed in with a smile.

That only frustrated Dustin.

Why does she always have to be so kind? That's exactly why I can never feel at ease! When will she ever stop making me worry?

“It hurts, doesn't it? Come on. I'll treat it for you.”

“No!” Joan argued. “Let's not go in there anymore. I don't want Ms. Young to find out...”

Dustin gazed at her and sighed. You keep thinking about others, but why can't you ever think about yourself?

The two immediately headed into a doctor's office.

“Oh! What brings you here, Dr. Silverman? Oh, no. That's a scald.” The doctor hastily got up.

“Stop babbling and bring me the ointment!” Dustin ordered.

The doctor quickly shut her mouth and placed a bottle of ointment in front of Dustin, looking rather aggrieved.

This lady looks really familiar. The female doctor sized Joan up.

“It might hurt a little, so bear with it,” Dustin said as he glanced up at Joan.

“It's okay. I'll be fine.”

With that, Dustin began to rub some of the ointment on the back of her hand. It hurt and itched at the same time. Joan gritted her teeth in pain as the female doctor looked on in slight admiration.

“Wow, not a single tear or even a sound,” the doctor muttered.

She looked rather unhappy as she gazed at Dustin and Joan.

When was this guy ever so gentle?

“Sigh... I've never seen you treat me this way, Dustin,” she said deliberately.

“Shut it. You're different,” Dustin replied coldly.

What does he mean I'm different? I'm a girl too! And this woman clearly isn't a family member of his. Could it be... she's the one he likes?

The female doctor suddenly recalled what she had heard once—that Dustin had a woman whom he never could stop loving or forget about, and he continued to watch over her silently. That was what she had heard from Jory.

The female doctor was friends with both Dustin and Jory, so she was naturally aware of some things.

“Okay, it's done. You can head back now, but be careful next time.” Dustin gazed at Joan.

“Thank you.” Joan swiftly rose to her feet, walked out of the office, and headed to Delilah's ward.

“What's up with that? So, she's that woman?” the female doctor asked with a slight scowl. The way he disregarded her just a while ago certainly made her upset.

“Some things don't need to be said, Flora,” Dustin answered, gazing at her sternly.

What's the deal? I was just asking about his love life. What is there to hide? Besides, we're all adults, so it's not like I wouldn't get it. Whether or not they're an actual couple depends on fate, no? Why does he have to make everything sound so formal? It's not like I'm dying for an answer!

“Fine. I have things to do. I don't need to know what's up with you as long as you know what you're doing. I'm not going to worry about you for nothing,” the female doctor remarked frankly.

In truth, Flora Carlos had secretly been in love with Dustin for the longest time. She had even chosen to delve into the medical field because of him. But after learning that Dustin's heart already belonged to someone else, she willingly stepped back.

Even so, the woman continued to pay close attention to him.

“All right. I'll be off, then,” Dustin responded, preparing to leave.

“Hey!” Flora cried out.

Seriously! This jerk's leaving without exchanging any pleasantries? We clearly hadn't met in a while, but he's not even asking how I've been!

Never Late, Never Away Chapter 2086

“Uhh... Do you have time today? We haven't seen each other for so long. How about we grab a bite together?” Flora suggested bashfully, keeping her head low.

“I'm busy today. I have to see Ms. Young.”

Flora instantly felt hollow upon being rejected so straightforwardly.

What the hell is with him? Forget it. I'm done.

“Sure. Go on now. I have work to do.” Flora shoved Dustin right out of her office.

Arghhhh! He pisses me off! The woman stomped her feet in frustration while staring at the lighthouse outside the window.

Meanwhile, Dustin collected himself before walking toward Delilah's ward.

“What happened? How did you get scalded?” Larry held onto Joan's arm tightly and blew at her hand.

“Oh, it's fine. I'll be better in no time.” Joan caressed the man's hair.

Delilah smiled in satisfaction as she watched them.

How she wished for them to carry on that way.

Dustin stood outside watching the entire ordeal. Then, he turned and left. The man didn't want to see how affectionate Larry and Joan were, or he might end up punching Larry in the face.

“Oh, where's Dustin? Didn't he come looking for you?” Delilah suddenly asked.

Larry's gaze instantly turned cold. What is that man doing here?

“What is he here for?” he asked, acting nonchalant.

“Oh, he knows this hospital pretty well, so he rushed over after hearing about Ms. Young. That was quite thoughtful of him,” Joan explained.

Who knows what he's actually up to or if he's doing this on purpose. Larry sipped his tea.

“Has Noelle come looking for you recently?”

“No. Why would she? It's not like we're close.”

“Come on, Joan. You were so popular in school,” Larry said deliberately.

What does he mean by that? Joan gazed at him, waiting for an explanation.

“Caiden used to like you,” the man added placidly.

How is that possible? We barely even spoke to each other back then!

“Cut that nonsense. Noelle's going to misunderstand me again if she finds out about this.” Joan glared at Larry.

This woman... I'm being completely serious here, but she doesn't believe me.

“Anyway, do be careful. I'm guessing that many things will start happening—especially when I'm not around...”

He spoke so sternly that Joan almost took him for his word.

“All right. Your phone's ringing. Your assistant probably wants you back.” Joan pointed to the device nearby that couldn't stop vibrating.

In the backyard, Dustin sat on a stone bench, gazing up at the sky while hugging his own arm.

“Hello? How's it going?”

“Mr. Silverman, we can't buy any more of Norton Corporation's shares. The other shareholders refuse to sell their shares, so we can only place second. According to what I've heard, those guys are loyal supporters of Larry—”

What an idiot! He can't even nail such a simple task!

Smack!

Dustin threw his phone onto the ground.

“Aww, such a fiery temper you have.”A familiar but loathsome voice rang out from nearby.

Not responding, Dustin continue to stare into the sky.

“I don't know what you're up to, but you'll never be able to lay a finger on Norton Corporation,” Larry added.

With a smirk, Dustin slowly got up and walked toward him.

“Why? Are you scared?”

He had obtained so many of Norton Corporation's shares and refused to believe that Larry would remain still or indifferent.

“I have nothing to fear. The corporate world is a battlefield. There are no feelings involved—only wins and losses.”

The two stood in the hallway, staring each other down frostily as the atmosphere tensed up all of a sudden.

“Dustin!” Suddenly, Flora's voice rang out from behind.

Never Late, Never Away Chapter 2087

Flora rushed up to them and said courteously, “Hello, Mr. Norton. Dr. Lowry is waiting for you to handle the bill.”

“Thank you.” Larry turned and left.

“Hey! What are you up to? You'd better not cause a ruckus. This is a hospital!” Flora gave Dustin's elbow a shove.

“No, you've got it wrong,” Dustin explained. “I wasn't causing a ruckus. Besides, that punk's the one who came to me...”

He was already in a bad mood, but now, it had worsened.

Still, had Flora not come over in time, the two men could have ended up getting into a real fight.

“Joan! What a coincidence. What are you doing here?” Caiden appeared surprised, acting as though he and Joan had met by accident.

Joan was taken aback. Why are we bumping into each other so frequently these days? We work in completely different fields, and we don't even go to the same places. But for some reason, we keep meeting in certain common venues. It's so bizarre!

“What a coincidence, indeed. What are you here for? Are you not feeling well?” Joan asked softly.

“Yeah. I haven't been doing too well lately, so I'm here for a check-up.”

He just returned from abroad, and he doesn't have any family apart from Jaden. It must be pretty tough on him.

“I see. Let me know if you need any help. I owe you one, anyway.” Joan patted the man on the shoulder like a close buddy.

“Really?”

“Of course. As long as I'm able to,” Joan promised, thumping her own chest with confidence.

Little did she know what Caiden was actually up to.

You're going to regret it. Caiden smirked deviously.

The two exchanged a few more words before parting.

“What took you so long?” Larry asked as she returned to the ward.

“Oh, I bumped into Caiden. He's not feeling well, so he's here for a check-up.”

Is this all just a coincidence? He's not actually up to something, is he? Larry gazed out the window with narrowed eyes, looking rather desolate.

Delilah knew how he felt, but she chose not to bring it up.

“How is Lucius, Joan?” she suddenly asked.

“He's doing pretty well, Ms. Young. Don't you worry. Larry takes good care of him every day, right, Larry?” Joan turned to the man by the window.

Yet, Larry was so absorbed in his own thoughts that he didn't hear her.

“Larry!” Joan called out to him.

“Huh? What is it, Joan?” He hurriedly turned around.

“What were you thinking about? Anyway, it's time to go. Lucius is almost done with school.” Joan began to feel slightly unhappy.

Crap! I lost track of time.Larry finally snapped back to reality.

“Okay. I'll be off now. Call me if you need anything,” he instructed before running out the door.

What's with him? Why does he seem so distracted? A crease appeared between Joan's brows.

Is he tired from everything that's happening at work?

“All right, now. Don't overthink it,” said Delilah.

“Okay,” Joan replied with a smile. “Here. Have some fruits, Ms. Young.”

Larry spotted Caiden from a short distance right after leaving the hospital. Despite not having met the latter in person before, he had seen photos of him. Similarly, Caiden had also come across Larry's pictures and understood him well.

The two were practically rivals.

“Mr. Norton?” Caiden greeted as he turned his head.

“Hello,” Larry responded magnanimously.

He knows who I am, right? Caiden looked up slightly. There's nothing this guy can't do—whether it's in the corporate world or in life. That means he does know about my past.

“Hi. I'm Joan's... junior from school. Caiden Owens.” The man extended his right arm right away.

Larry gazed at the man standing in front of him.

Hmm... He does have a good face and body. A fine man, I must say. It's just a shame he's fallen for someone he shouldn't have.

Never Late, Never Away Chapter 2088

“I've heard about you from Joan. Thank you for saving her.” Larry took Caiden's hand in response.

The two men instantly felt the warmth and force from each other's hands.

Heh. He's a pretty strong one! Larry smirked.

“It's no problem. It's just something I should've done,” Caiden replied.

What a joke. She's MY woman. Any man who's ever helped her has my gratitude, but this is the first time I've ever heard someone say that it's something he “should've done”.

Yup, he's no regular guy.

Should I treat our handshake as a declaration of war?

“Oh, uhh... I should let you know that I just came back from abroad not too long ago. There are lots of things I haven't familiarized myself with, so I'll be asking for Joan's help quite a bit.” Caiden spoke confidently as though it was only natural that Joan helped him out.

Larry froze briefly before returning to his usual composed self. He would only appear too petty if he were to look any different.

“That's fine. I believe she'll help you out as a way of returning the favor,” replied Larry.

Of course she'll help me—as long as you don't get in my way, thought Caiden.

“Caiden! Come on in!” A woman called out from not far off.

“Oh, your girlfriend's calling for you.” Larry pointed to a car nearby.

Having looked her up previously, he knew that the woman was Noelle Ford. She had secretly liked Caiden for many years.

“She's not my girlfriend,” Caiden responded immediately.

Larry smirked with a hint of disdain in his eyes. It honestly didn't matter to him whether or not Noelle was Caiden's girlfriend.

“Come on, Caiden! What are you waiting for?” Noelle continued to cry out.

Caiden turned to glare at her impatiently.

“You should go. Don't keep her waiting.” Larry smiled intentionally.

“Hey, she's not...”

Before Caiden could finish, Larry had already left.

Why does this girl keep showing at the wrong time? How did she even know I was here? Did that punk, Jaden, tell her?

Suddenly, his phone rang, and it so happened to be Jaden calling.

“Hey, Caiden... I have to tell you this. My sister's... gone looking for you. You'd better hide!” Jaden stammered nervously.

“She's already found me,” Caiden replied before immediately hanging up.

On the other side, Jaden froze.

We're screwed. Someone always gets hurt whenever those two meet. Forget it. I'd better save my energy for when it's time to console one of them.

Meanwhile, Larry got into his car and headed straight for the village. Caiden's face constantly surfaced in his mind as he drove.

He could tell that Caiden was no ordinary guy; the latter probably had an influential background but was merely hiding it.

“Hey, Caspian, use some connections and find out Caiden Owen's real background. The more detailed, the better.”

“Haven't I sent you a copy?”

“I want his real information, not the fake background he used back in school!” With that, Larry hung up.

Does that mean Caiden has two different backgrounds? Caspian scratched his head.

Ever since Delilah received her treatment, Joan's mood improved by the day, and the entire family became filled with hope and determination.

“You must be tired, Joan. I'm sorry for the trouble,” Delilah said with gratitude.

“What are you talking about, Ms. Young? Don't you remember how you used to take care of me every day back when I was recuperating?” Joan smiled.

She was a sentimental woman, and she certainly knew how to be thankful for what others had done for her. Joan knew that Delilah had a rich past; the latter had merely chosen to forget it. They were both such piteous women, so they naturally understood each other.

“Honestly, Larry isn't bad. Neither is Dustin. But I can tell that you only see Dustin as a friend, so don't keep his hopes up,” Delilah remarked out of the blue.

Why is she suddenly talking about this? Joan blinked in suspicion.

“Larry and I are married, so we'll definitely have each other's backs forever. I've never thought about anything else,” Joan replied softly.

Even so, that didn't mean others had never thought about it.

“That's why you'll have to make it clear with Dustin,” Delilah insisted.

Truthfully, none of the men were bad people. But given how much more persistent Dustin was, he might end up doing something extreme.

Suddenly, a vibration came from the table nearby.

“It's your phone,” said Delilah while pointing to it.

“Hello?” Joan hurriedly answered it.

“Joan...” What's wrong? Why does he sound so weak? Is he sick?

“Can you still talk, Caiden? Where are you now?”

“I'm at home. Help me, Joan...” Caiden answered, sounding breathless.

What happened all of a sudden? Joan began to panic.

Delilah frowned upon seeing how anxious the woman looked.

“It hurts, Joan.”

Joan's chest immediately tightened as she began to panic.

“Are you okay, Joan?” Delilah stared at her with concern.

“Uhh... Ms. Young, I have to take care of something right now. Call the nurses or Larry if you need anything!” With that, Joan grabbed her purse and dashed out.

What's gotten into her all of a sudden? But still, who called her? It looks like it's something urgent. Delilah clutched her blanket, feeling slightly unhappy.

She feared that Joan and Larry's road to happiness wasn't going to be hindered by just a few minor obstacles.

After all, life was so unpredictable that no one knew what would happen next. All she could do was to pray for them, but the rest depended on their fate.

“Please go faster, Sir. I'm in a rush,” Joan urged the cab driver.

She was worried that Caiden's life was in danger. If they had met once at the hospital, who knew what could happen next?

He always looks so healthy. How could he have suddenly gotten sick? Joan shook her head in puzzlement.

Soon, the vehicle came to a stop.

“Caiden!” The woman banged on the door, not caring about the neighbors.

“Open up, Caiden!” she shouted.

“Hey! What's all the ruckus this early in the morning? I'm trying to get some sleep here!” a neighbor bellowed.

“Sorry! It's an emergency. I'm really sorry,” Joan apologized.

“That doesn't mean you can bother other residents! That's illegal!” another neighbor called out from her balcony.

Hearing the commotion, Caiden slowly got up and walked to his door.

“Sorry for the trouble.”

Click! The door opened.

Joan's felt relieved as soon as she saw Caiden.

Thank God he's okay. I wouldn't be able to live with it if something happened to him because I was too late!

“I'm sorry again,” said Joan before heading in.

The woman on the balcony immediately became so captivated by Caiden's good looks that she couldn't hear Joan's apology at all.

“Are you feeling better? Does it hurt anywhere?” Joan quickly asked.

“I'm a little better. I felt so weak just now, so I called you. I'm really sorry for the trouble,” Caiden murmured.

“It's no trouble at all! I should only be helping you. Come on, I'll take you to the hospital,” she responded before attempting to help Caiden up.

“It's fine. I've already gotten a check-up a few days ago. I'll be okay after taking my medicine. Uhh... Could you help me get it? It's on the table over there.” Caiden pointed to a table nearby.

Joan swiftly turned and grabbed the medicine.

“Have you eaten? I'll cook you something.”

That'd be great! Caiden instantly became overjoyed. I didn't think she'd start cooking for me this soon. It's going to be an extraordinary meal.

“In that case, I'm counting on you,” Caiden answered frankly.

Joan walked right into the kitchen. She opened the refrigerator to find nothing but instant noodles inside there.

How on earth does he get by? Does he eat nothing but instant noodles? Joan's gaze turned gloomy in an instant. How could such a charming man like him live such a shabby life? He probably hasn't had anything to eat yet.

“What do you feel like eating? I'll drop by the grocery store and grab some fruits and veggies.”

Caiden, who was seated on the couch, suddenly felt the urge to live on. We'd be so happy if we were to get married one day.

“I'd like to have something vegetarian, so more vegetables will do,” he replied blankly.

With that, Joan turned and left.

Sigh... What am I? A nanny? But still, I guess I'll consider this my repayment of debt.

The woman left in such a rush that she forgot her phone, which began to vibrate on the table.

Half an hour passed, and Caiden couldn't help but wonder who was calling Joan incessantly.

Larry? He walked over and glanced at the screen.

Finally, he picked up the phone.

“Hello, good morning,” Caiden greeted.

Upon hearing the unfamiliar yet familiar voice, Larry stilled for a moment.

Who's that? Why does he sound familiar? Larry scratched the back of his head while deep in thought.

“Hello? Can I help you?” Caiden spoke again.

Didn't she save my number in her contacts? Larry wondered.

“Who are you?” he asked directly.

How forgetful could you be? We just talked a few days ago, and you've already forgotten my voice?

Caiden cleared his throat and put on a serious facade.

“You must be looking for Joan. She's gone out to buy some groceries. I'll get her to call you when she comes back,” he said deliberately.

Larry suddenly felt like he was about to lose his mind.

He couldn't quite believe what Caiden was telling him.

Joan dropped by his place? Why is she cooking for him? And why didn't she tell me where she was going?

Larry couldn't help but feel that something wasn't right.

“Who are you?” he asked cautiously.

Caiden huffed with disdain.

“I'm Caiden Owens. Sorry, but I have something to take care of, so I'm hanging up. I'll get Joan to...”

It's him again! Larry's gaze turned frosty. I knew he's no ordinary guy. He's starting to make his move. And that woman's still acting like everything's fine!

Caiden sat on the couch in the living room for a long time, casually flipping through a magazine. Meanwhile, Joan was exhausted from shopping for groceries. The woman didn't know why she was buying so many groceries, but since she was already at the supermarket, she figured she would buy as many items as possible.

Thump!

“I'm back,” Joan called out as she returned.

“Goodness, Joan. Why did you buy so much stuff? It's not like I'd be able to finish everything.” Caiden was visibly surprised.

No one else apart from Jaden had ever gotten him groceries along with some other necessities. Caiden felt warm and fuzzy on the inside as he watched the sight before him.
