Nothing To Give But My Heart Chapter 1471
Xu Yanwan subsequently visited Yan with the address given by Lin Xuzheng. Nonetheless, when Han Qing realized it was her, he turned her away and said, “Xiaoyan and her unborn baby need to rest. So, please leave, Miss Xu.” As soon as she heard the way she was addressed, Xu Yanwan paused for a while, sensing Han Qing’s resolution to cut ties with her, which would mean the end of the diplomatic relationship between the Xu and Han Family.
At the thought of that, Xu Yanwan felt a sting of pain in her heart. If I hadn’t done anything in the beginning or come back, Han Qing wouldn’t have hated me so much. Unfortunately, it’s all too late to turn back now, just like my parents who are never coming back. As Han Qing was about to leave, Xu Yanwan was suddenly reminded of Lin Xuzheng’s words, whereupon she blocked the door. “Wait a minute.”
Han Qing stopped in his tracks and looked at her in a nonchalant manner. “Is there anything else?”
“I…” Xu Yanwan felt a lump in her throat as she struggled to utter words from her mouth. “I-I’m here to apologize to Xiaoyan. I know you don’t want to see me, but I sincerely want to offer my apology. So, please give me a chance.”
Xu Yanwan implored Han Qing to let her in, while looking at the man with sympathetic eyes. Nevertheless, Han Qing deemed no one else deserved his sympathy, except for Yan. Therefore, he turned her down right away without much hesitation. “Save your breath. Just manage your company well because your business is none of mine anymore. Thank you.”
Xu Yanwan’s heart sank when she heard Han Qing’s words, thinking that he wouldn’t allow her to see Yan. As Xu Yanwan was about to turn around and leave in disappointment, she heard a voice coming from behind Han Qing. “Han Qing, let her in.”
As soon as she heard that, Xu Yanwan lifted her head and saw Yan not far behind Han Qing. After a long period of rest, she seemed to almost recover fully, as her face was no longer as pale as before. She was seen wearing a shawl over her shoulders as well as a pair of winter boots. Apparently, she had been well taken care of. When Han Qing saw her, he immediately got softened up and walked up to her. “Why are you here? Aren’t you resting upstairs?”
Yan felt helpless when Han Qing helped her stand, thinking about the recent days in which he had been taking good care of her. Besides making sure she was properly clad and on a healthy diet, Han Qing also temporarily grounded her, unless it was necessary, but even so, he would tag along with her. Ever since the incident that happened at the wedding ceremony, Han Qing was more worried than ever for Yan’s safety.
Every time Han Qing warmed up to Yan reminded her of the old times when he wasn’t in love with her. At that time, he treated me coldly most of the time, even unwilling to talk to me. However, it looks like things have taken a better turn for now. “I’m fine. I’ve spent days staying upstairs and it’s killing me. So, when I heard some noises, I came downstairs to have a look.”
Upon hearing that, Han Qing appeared unhappy as he said, “I’ll take you upstairs now.” Nevertheless, Yan seized his hand and shook her head to show her refusal. “I don’t want to go up.” Her answer made Han Qing purse his lips, while the latter said with an annoyed voice, “I don’t want you to see her.” Although he knew Xu Yanwan had nothing to do with that incident, he was still not sure what she was up to because he would go crazy if he allowed anything to happen to Yan.
“We’re just going to have a word. It’ll be fine.” Yan bit her lips and whispered in Han Qing’s ear, “She was the one who rescued me the last time. So, she is not a bad person, and I doubt she’ll try to hurt me.”
However, Han Qing blurted out, “People change. Furthermore, you are never friends with her in the first place.”
“I know, but I also believe the Xu Family’s daughter wouldn’t do such a thing. If she had really wanted to do me in, she could have stood by and watched me get caught in trouble.” In fact, that was the reason why Yan didn’t tell Han Qing about her opinion. Indeed, she felt chills running down her spine when she first learned that someone was going to do harm to her, but it was Xu Yanwan who saved her in the end, much to her surprise. Although Yan hadn’t known that He Lianjing was behind this, she believed Xu Yanwan’s rescue at the critical moment had proven her kind nature.
In this case, being a bad guy was actually tougher than playing the good guy. Yan reckoned a person with a good nature would be held back by his conscience from doing something bad. Therefore, she chose to believe her judgement. “She is already here anyway. So, just let her in.”
Han Qing then gazed at Yan, as he still appeared to be doubtful. Upon noticing his worried look, Yan said, “I’ll protect myself. So, don’t worry.”
“Must you see her?” Han Qing asked, to which Yan nodded. In the end, Han Qing gave in and let Xu Yanwan in. Both ladies then sat on the couch along with Han Qing. Nevertheless, Yan asked to be left alone with Xu Yanwan, prompting Han Qing to order two servants to stand by aside, in order to ensure her safety.
After Han Qing left, Xu Yanwan bitterly smiled and said, “It seems like he is really concerned about you.” When Yan heard her, she said, “He wasn’t like this before, but I have your friend to thank for changing him.”
My friend? Xu Yanwan was left with her mouth slightly agape. “You mean He Lianjing?”
“Yeah,” Yan responded with a nod and said, “I’ve been reading a lot of news online lately. So, it’s not hard for me to figure out who is behind this hanky-panky. Then, I subsequently learned that he used to woo you.” Yan’s statement was met with silence.
“I suppose he was responsible for what happened in the café, wasn’t he?”
Xu Yanwan lowered her gaze and said, “Yes, he was. After you went to the bathroom, he told me he was going to get physical with you. So…”
“So, you came back and rescued me.”
“That’s right.”
“Thank you.” Yan’s sudden expression of gratitude took Xu Yanwan aback as she lifted her head to meet the former’s gaze. “Thank you for stopping him. If it hadn’t been you, I don’t know what would have become of me.” While looking at her sincere gaze, Xu Yanwan suddenly felt a lump in her throat, struggling to find her own voice.
“So, you don’t blame me for what happened, do you?”
“Why would I?”
“He was also responsible for the fire in the hotel. Haven’t you thought that it was my idea to have him carry out the plan while I stayed on the fence and pretended to be innocent?”
“You’re not that kind of person. We both may not have known each for long, but I can tell that you’re very fond of Han Qing although you had been restraining yourself. Therefore, I honestly doubt I’d do any better than you if I were in your place. Of course, there are things about you that I don’t like either, which is probably because of our opposing positions.”
Nothing To Give But My Heart Chapter 1472
“Anyway, I’m glad that you’re positive about this matter.” On the contrary, Yan was actually afraid that Xu Yanwan’s dismay would push her too far and force her down the wrong path. By then, she would not only do harm to those around her, but also herself.
“So, are you sure you’re not mad at me? After all, I impulsively drove a wedge between you and Han Qing, causing you to leave and nearly break up with him. Besides, I previously tried to take your place by riding shotgun.”
“Are you seriously going to do that?” Yan laughed in an unconcerned manner. “Actually, I don’t think I should blame you, although I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t mad. I even wanted to cut ties with you, but in hindsight, I realized I wouldn’t have known that Han Qing followed me after I left if it hadn’t been you. Let’s just say this matter has made me understand how important I’ve always been to Han Qing, which at least proved that I wasn’t making things work alone in our relationship. As for you riding shotgun, I picked on you for that there and then, didn’t I?”
In fact, Xu Yanwan expected to make an apology today. She even braced herself for any blame that Yan would put on her. To her surprise, the latter didn’t berate her, which made her feel even guiltier. Then, she bit her lips and lowered her head as tears filled her eyes.
“I know what an unrequited love can put a person through, but if you’re here for an apology, I don’t think you have any to offer because it’s not your fault in the first place. Besides, the reason I agreed to see you is that I want to have a word with you to clear the air between us. You still have a long way ahead, so please live your life well.” She is the prestigious Xu Family’s young mistress, and it’d be a shame to see her future doomed by this incident that was caused by that scumbag.
Meanwhile, Xu Yanwan lifted her head and looked at her tearfully. “Why didn’t you blame me? You could have at least said something harsh to me, but why were you so kind to me? Do you know how much pain I’m feeling now? I’m the young mistress of the reputable Xu Family, but yet I feel so embarrassed in front of you. Can’t you just be a little angrier?” Upon hearing that, Yan felt a twitch in her eyebrows as she remained silent and watched Xu Yanwan break down in tears.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have come back. I shouldn’t have let my desire take over me, neither should I have hung around He Lianjing. Fortunately, you’re now safe and sound. If you aren’t, there is really nothing I could do to make it up to you, and I’d end up as a disgrace to the Xu Family. I’m sorry.” While apologizing, she uncontrollably sobbed in a sympathetic manner. Not expecting her to cry, Yan didn’t know what to do besides watching her in silence.
The sight of Xu Yanwan crying even got the two servants on edge as they were afraid that she would lose control of her emotion and do anything dangerous to Yan. Therefore, they were ready to fight back any moment. Nevertheless, Xu Yanwan was only crying and apologizing. She showed no signs of trying anything else. Not knowing how much time had passed, a few pieces of tissue papers were handed over to Xu Yanwan. With tears covering her eyes, she could roughly make out a figure which turned out to be Yan who was giving her the tissue papers. “Take it easy.”
Nevertheless, Xu Yanwan didn’t take the tissue papers, but instead tearfully asked, “Will you forgive me?” What? Yan couldn’t believe her ears while looking at her in surprise. “I’ve come here today to offer my apology and beg for forgiveness.”
Yan felt relieved upon hearing her reply. “Oh, so this is what you meant. Anyway, please wipe off your tears first.” In the end, Xu Yanwan took the tissue papers from Yan and turned around to wipe off her tears before she looked back at the latter. “This is embarrassing. I’m sorry about that.” By now, Xu Yanwan had already come to her senses and regained control of her emotion.
“It’s okay.”
“Are you going to forgive me? I know it was my fault back then, and I promise I’ll never do that again.”
“We’re way past that point. In fact, I’ve already put it behind me, so I guess I don’t blame you. In that case, there is no need for me to forgive you.” Xu Yanwan understood whatYan meant upon hearing that. She never blamed me in the first place. So, I guess I can rest easy now, without having to worry whether I’ll be forgiven. At the thought of that, Xu Yanwan felt even more touched by Yan’s magnanimity.
“No wonder he likes you so much.”
After hearing her words, Yan paused, lowering her gaze as she said, “Actually, I’ve come a long way before getting this far, and there were many times that I nearly gave up.”
“You have my blessing anyway, although I suppose I’m responsible for ruining your wedding. So, do you plan to hold another wedding?” Yan shook her head and replied, “Nah, the wedding is just a formality, which is not as important as being with him.” Despite her resolution to let go of her love for Han Qing, Xu Yanwan still couldn’t help but feel a sting of pain when she heard Yan’s words. Nevertheless, she quickly disguised and suppressed her emotions, forcing a smile on her face.
“You’re right. Having each other is what matters. Formality is nothing as important as that.” Xu Yanwan then left shortly after apologizing, whereupon Yan realized that she left something behind and sent her servant to return it to its owner. However, the servant soon came back and said, “Madam, Miss Xu is gone. What do we do with this?”
Is she in such a hurry? Yan helplessly said, “Leave it here. We’ll return it to her the next time we see her.” The servant did as told and placed the bag of items aside, but when she did that, a bank card fell onto the floor. Upon pausing briefly, she said, “Madam, there is a bank card.” A bank card?
Her servant’s statement filled Yan’s mind with questions. It’d be understandable if Yan came with a present to signify her sincerity in apologizing, but what does this bank card mean? Did she really need a bank card to apologize? Therefore, Yan walked closer and unwrapped the present.
“Madam, there is a written note here.”
‘This card will grant you access to 90% of the company’s profit. From now on, I’ll transfer a sum of money into this account every month. I’m sorry. I’ve owed you too much, and this is the only way for me to redeem myself.’
After reading the note, Yan paused for a long while until she heard footsteps coming from behind her. Han Qing then showed up and asked, “What’s wrong?” In response, Yan handed the note and the bank card to the man. Upon taking a closer look, Han Qing’s gaze turned cold as he placed both of the items into the bag. “Ninety percent of the company’s profit is going into this account. How is her company going to survive like that? Let’s give it back to her. Okay?”
Han Qing went soft and said, “You really want to give it back to her?” Yan nodded her head and answered, “I know you’re always concerned about the affiliation between the Han and Xu Families. Furthermore, she hasn’t done me any harm because she is actually innocent.” Is she really innocent?
Nothing To Give But My Heart Chapter 1473
Han Qing felt the opposite way, doubting Xu Yanwan’s innocence. Since Yan wished to resolve the issue in a diplomatic manner, he decided to go along with her. “Alright, I’ll get someone to return this to her tomorrow. We’re not in any desperate need of money anyway.”
Upon hearing that, Yan flushed in her cheeks with frustration and said, “I’m not doing that because you’re rich, but because I really think that matter has nothing to do with her. Furthermore, she’ll be your employee for her whole life if she gives you all her company’s profit. In that case, you’ll disappoint the Xu Family’s elderly. Therefore, you can say I’m doing this all for your sake.”
Han Qing curled his lips and rubbed Yan’s head. “Alright, what’s mine is yours anyway. Just do what you want, I won’t question your decision.” Upon hearing his words, Yan blinked her eyes in surprise as she couldn’t believe Han Qing had changed ever since they both got married, probably due to the traumatic incident they went through. Han Qing had now spent more time with his wife, even buying and reading a number of books and guides about pregnancy. I’ve only been pregnant for a few months, but he is acting like I’m going into labor. I suppose I now know why Ye Moxuan would never let Han Muzi out of his sight. It really makes me wonder whether all men are like that. Do they really change once their wives get pregnant?
To Yan, she no longer felt like she was always running out of breath, trying to keep up with Han Qing’s pace. Instead, she now felt the other way round as Han Qing spoiled her like a little child. While he treated her like an apple of his eye, Yan couldn’t help but feel like she was walking on air. As time went by, she became more comfortable with giving Han Qing her instructions. For example, she never dared to order him around back then, but now when she was too tired to move from the couch to her bedroom, she’d coquettishly ask Han Qing to carry her bodily, which the latter did as told without a question. Besides that, Han Qing would also prepare her toothbrush and toothpaste every time she slept in before he woke her up and carried her to the bathroom. Thanks to all these experiences, she had gotten more confident with instructing Han Qing to do what she wished he would.
At first, Yan was worried that she might not be able to get used to life as a rich man’s wife. Fortunately, things didn’t turn out as she thought it would because the Han Family’s elderly were long gone, leaving only Han Qing and herself, as well as their pet cat. Although the family was peaceful and tranquil, she was bound to feel desolate and lonely at times. Therefore, she really wished for Han Qing’s parents to be around so that her child could meet them, but unfortunately, reality was cruel.
In the meantime, Han Muzi would occasionally swing by to visit Yan with her daughter, Han Yaya. I’ve only hugged Little Sprout a few times, but I already find her prettier and prettier. Her eyes are so beautiful, as well as her fair skin and red lips. It seems that she has really inherited her parents’ fine genes, except that she looks like a silly girl when she smiles. Nonetheless, that was exactly why Yan liked to make her laugh so that she could take pictures of this cute little girl and upload them to her social media account.
Han Muzi said, “Oh dear! I’m going to report your post. Little Sprout looks prettier when she is not smiling, but yet she looks like a silly little girl in your photos.”
“What’s wrong with being a silly girl? Isn’t that how a child should look? Why do you want to force her to be this smart? Furthermore, Little Bean is smart enough, and I think he’ll do a good job in protecting his little sister.”
“I’m really worried that she’ll come out of the shallow end of the gene pool despite her good looks. Nevertheless, even though she may not turn out to be as smart as her father, I’d still be grateful enough if she is on a par with me. But if that happens, I guess I’m to be blamed for the poor gene,” Han Muzi anxiously replied.
“Relax. That will not happen.” Yan seized her hand and enviously said, “I’d be happy to have a daughter as cute as Little Sprout.” In fact, she didn’t mind having a son or a daughter, although she still hadn’t known whether her unborn child would be a boy or a girl. Nevertheless, she preferred her first child to be a girl, but reckoned she’d let fate decide the gender of her next child.
“You’re going to get what you want. You just have to work harder with my brother.” While the conversation took a turn to become more ambiguous, Yan flushed in her cheeks with bashfulness, responding with only silence.
“By the way, have you called to check on Xiao Su?”
Upon hearing that, Yan was taken aback. “Xiao Su? No, I haven’t.” She shook her head and confusedly asked, “Why should I call him?”
Judging from her reaction, I doubt she knows anything about the matter. Han Muzi couldn’t believe Yan knew nothing about the incident as she thought her brother had filled the latter in about it. What? How could my brother not let her know anything about it? “The last time when you were caught in the fire, Xiao Su came to your rescue as well.”
Those words came like a bolt from the blue, leaving Yan’s eyes wide open and mouth agape. “What did you just say? Xiao Su was in the fire too?”
“Yeah.” Han Muzi nodded her head. “I thought you knew.”
“Nobody told me about it—not even your brother.”
“Please forgive him. He probably didn’t tell you because he was worried about your previous mental condition. If I were him, I wouldn’t tell you either.”
“Don’t worry, I understand, and I won’t blame him for that. Anyhow, I just didn’t know he also came to my rescue. How could I not know a single thing? I didn’t even thank him.” Back then, the fire was raging out of control so much that I had to take cover in the bathroom. Even Han Qing got hurt when he barged in first, not to mention Xiao Su who came later. And yet, I was kept in the dark all this time! At the thought of that, Yan’s heart sank. She knew Xiao Su had always been fond of her, but she didn’t know he’d go to such an extent to prove his love for her.
In the meantime, Han Muzi seemingly saw through her emotional struggle. “Are you thinking of what you should say to him?” In response, Yan nodded.
“Do you know that Xiao Su is now in a relationship?”
Yan paused upon hearing that shortly before she nodded. “Yeah, I know. I saw her once the last time when I swung by to drop an invitation card. She is rather good-looking.”
“Exactly.” Han Muzi nodded while recalling that day when she ran into Jiang Xiaobai at the hospital. “She is indeed good-looking. I bumped into her in the hospital when she went to visit Xiao Su.”
“Are you saying that she knew Xiao Su risked himself to save me in the fire?” Yan sounded uneasy and anxious. “Oh gosh! Did she misunderstand Xiao Su? Did both of them fall out with each other over that?”
“I’m not too sure about that.” Han Muzi shook her head and pondered. “But I don’t think she is that petty. At that time, Xiao Su was badly hurt. He then privately spoke with her in a corner and returned only by himself. Honestly, it’d be understandable even if she was really mad. Would you agree to let Han Qing save another lady in distress?”
Nothing To Give But My Heart Chapter 1474
No! Of course not! Yan was sure about that deep down. I was worried sick for Han Qing when he came to my rescue, let alone allowing him to rescue another lady in danger. Upon hearing Han Muzi’s words, Yan was overwhelmed even more by guilt, for she only came to know about all the things that had happened when she was unconscious. The girl whom I saw at Xiao Su’s place looks pretty and outgoing. They even looked like a perfect match when they stood side by side. However, what if I was the reason they fell out with each other, or the reason that caused anything bad to happen to them? What should I do?
“Just take it easy.” While Yan’s imagination was running wild, Han Muzi held her hand and said, “Well, we reap what we sow, and we can never get away with karma. Xiao Su used to like you, which was no secret among us all. He was deeply in love with you, so his first reaction when he knew you were caught in the fire was to rush to your rescue. That was the seed he sowed. However, he didn’t handle his relationship issues well before he started dating his girlfriend, which only served to piss the latter off. If the worst comes to the worst, they may break up with each other, and this is the fruit that Xiao Su will reap. From the way I see it, it has nothing to do with you at all.”
After all, Yan was the one who was admired. As she was helplessly caught in the fire, she didn’t expect Xiao Su to risk himself and save her. Although Han Muzi’s words had managed to comfort her, she still couldn’t shake off the pain that she was feeling as she bitterly smiled and said, “I finally know why Xu Yanwan brought me her bank card.”
Even though what He Lianjing did had barely anything to do with her, Xu Yanwan’s name would still be linked with his. Despite her innocence, she would still be deemed to be part of the man’s evil plan as long as the man was doing it all for her, which would only lead to an endless vicious cycle of misfortunes.
Therefore, Xu Yanwan would still inevitably be treated as an accomplice whether she wanted it, even though she wasn’t the culprit behind that incident. As a result, she was burdened by guilt, uneasiness, and embarrassment, much like Yan at this time. I suppose there is no absolute answer to what’s right or wrong in this world because there are simply too many gray areas in which we struggle and fight our battles, just like Xu Yanwan and me.
“Alright, don’t overthink the matter. Just do your what you should and leave the rest to the party involved. After all, they’re all grown adults, and I believe they know what they want. So, you don’t have to waste your breath giving your advice because it won’t work anyway.”
“Yeah, I heard you.” After Han Muzi left, Yan stayed in the room for a long while before she picked up her cell phone and made a call.
Meanwhile, Jiang Xiaobai was sitting on the couch and reading her notes in the apartment when she heard Xiao Su’s phone ringing. Then, she shouted, “Hey, your phone is ringing.” Her response was met with silence, so she turned around to look, only to realize that she was alone in the living room. Since when did Xiao Su go to the bathroom?
Therefore, Jiang Xiaobai extended her arm to reach out for the phone. When she saw the incoming call on the phone screen, she briefly paused and calmed herself down. Xiaoyan? Isn’t this the lady who stole Xiao Su’s heart? Why is she calling him now? I bet he is going to be over the moon if he sees this. Feeling troubled, Jiang Xiaobai hesitated whether she should answer the call when her fingers acted ahead of her mind.
“Hello?”
“Hello, good evening.”
“Good evening.” Yan wasn’t surprised to hear a woman’s voice and even heaved a sigh of relief. “Hi, you must be Xiao Su’s girlfriend, right? I’m Xiaoyan. We met the last time I went over to drop an invitation card.” Jiang Xiaobai responded with an affirmative hum and said, “Yeah, I know. The invitation card had the names of the bride and the bridegroom written on it.”
“I’m sorry to call you at this hour, but I’m actually calling to apologize.” Did she call for the incident that Xiao Su rescued her? Jiang Xiaobai’s eyes wandered aimlessly without giving her a response. “We initially wanted to invite you and your boyfriend to our wedding ceremony, but unfortunately, we hit a snag on that day. You both came in the end, and we’re sorry for wasting your time.”
In fact, Jiang Xiaobai knew what Yan had called for when she saw the phone ringing. She then shifted her gaze to the bathroom, wondering how long more it’d take for Xiao Su to come out. He’s been in there for quite a while. Should I knock and get him to answer the call? After all, the call is for him. While contemplating, Yan seemingly knew what was on Jiang Xiaobai’s mind as she said, “Sorry.”
Jiang Xiaobai was stunned, whereupon she asked, “Did you just apologize to me?”
“Yes, I did.”
“For what? If it’s for Xiao Su’s effort of rescuing you, I don’t think you need to apologize because I don’t blame him for saving you in the first place.” Indeed, Jiang Xiaobai didn’t blame him for that. After all, she knew Xiao Su still had his own relationship issues to deal with when they both started dating, considering the unexpected circumstance under which they both met each other. Therefore, she didn’t force Xiao Su to drop Yan like a hot potato. If forgetting someone was that easy, I wouldn’t even cast an eye on him.
That was why Jiang Xiaobai wasn’t mad at Xiao Su for rescuing Yan at the risk of his own life. What got on her nerves was his heated confrontation with someone else’s husband even though he should be resting due to his injury. His complete disregard of his own condition had unknowingly made him selfish in neglecting Jiang Xiaobai’s worry for him, which was the reason why Jiang Xiaobai was so mad.
“I think I know how you’re feeling. You’re probably guilty right now. So, let me tell you something. Don’t overthink the situation. We’re both getting along well. In fact, I have always been aware of your existence since we first started dating.” What? Upon hearing that, Yan sounded surprised. “You knew?”
“Yes, I knew he had a crush on you.” As a matter of fact, Jiang Xiaobai had already learned about it long ago. Initially, the both of them treated their relationship as a deal as they were both useful to each other. Unbeknownst to them, the incident had somehow played out unexpectedly. Therefore, she’d never punish herself with a mistake that she had made in the past.
Yan had no idea what to say. She knew I was the one with whom Xiao Su was in love when I popped by to drop an invitation card. Yet she still treated me so kindly. “I’m surprised you’d say that.”
“I know it’s not easy for a person to control his feelings. So, I won’t be mad at him. Anyway, I bet you want to thank him, right? I’d suggest that you wait until he completely forgets about you. By then, it’s still not too late for you to come and show your gratitude.”
Jiang Xiaobai’s tactful reply had successfully eased Yan’s worried mind. The two ladies subsequently managed to hit it off during the chat as they were about the same age. Therefore, they then decided to add each other as friends on WeChat. Nonetheless, there was a voice in Jiang Xiaobai’s mind telling her to delete the contact, but in the end, she didn’t listen to it.
Nothing To Give But My Heart Chapter 1475
When Xiao Su exited the bathroom, Jiang Xiaobai realized he was already done with his shower, as suggested by his wet hair that was still dripping with water. She then reminded him, “Come on, get a towel and wipe your hair. The weather is freezing, and I doubt you want to catch a cold.” Xiao Su was rather physically fit with a higher percentage of fat than average people. Furthermore, he just had a hot shower, so he didn’t feel cold at all. Nonetheless, he decided to listen to Jiang Xiaobai and grabbed himself a towel, whereupon he sat beside Jiang Xiaobai while wiping his hair.
Then, Jiang Xiaobai looked askance at him and probingly asked, “Your phone rang around while you were away. So, I answered the call for you.”
“Okay.” Xiao Su didn’t respond further as he continued wiping his hair. Not long after, he asked, “Who called?”
“How about a guess?” Upon hearing that, Xiao Su turned around and looked at her with a widened gaze. While their eyes met, Jiang Xiaobai raised the corner of her lips and answered, “It was your crush.” After that, she noticed Xiao Su avoiding her gaze in silence, as he unknowingly paused what he was doing. Anxious, Jiang Xiaobai decided to sit on Xiao Su’s lap. “What’s wrong? Did you regret letting me pick up the call? Let me tell you, Xiao Su. If you regret it, you could always call back.”
However, Xiao Su didn’t say a word. Instead, he only snaked his arm behind her back to keep her from falling. Jiang Xiaobai then moved closer to him, staring at him. “Don’t you have anything to say?” Upon hearing her reply, Xiao Su pursed his lips and said, “You’re my girlfriend, and I have nothing to hide from you. You could pick up any call from anyone, and I won’t have a question about it.” He knew that he should behave himself and be a responsible boyfriend for Xiaobai.
After hearing his words, Jiang Xiaobai decided to stop pressing him further. She hesitated for a while before she took the towel and helped him wipe his hair. “Let me help you.” Xiao Su didn’t turn her down, but instead let her do what she wished to while he lowered his gaze and appeared to be brooding. As their silent interaction persisted for more than a minute, Xiao Su’s short hair had made it easier for Jiang Xiaobai to finish the job. Then, she gave him a nudge and said, “It’s almost done. All that’s left is for the hair dryer to do its job.”
Xiao Su responded with an affirmative hum and said, “It’s freezing. So, go get your shower.” Jiang Xiaobai contemplated briefly and wrapped her arm around the man’s neck, saying, “Alright, but I don’t feel like walking. Do you think you can carry me to the bathroom? Oh yeah, don’t forget about my clothes as well.” I didn’t know girls can behave so coquettishly. Xiaobai has really taught me a thing or two about handling girls ever since we began dating. Therefore, he didn’t hesitate much before he wrapped his arms around her waist and carried her bodily, walking in the direction of the bathroom.
Upon carrying her to the bathroom, Xiao Su asked, “Do you need me to prepare you the water?” At the same time, Jiang Xiaobai sluggishly sat on the basin countertop and gazed at the man with a smile. “Sure.” As Xiao Su turned around and filled in the bathtub with water, Jiang Xiaobai had her eyes glued to his back and raised the corner of her lips. After that, she took off her shocks and shoes before touching the man’s back with her fair smooth feet.
“Don’t forget about my clothes.” Xiao Su turned around, stunned when he saw her feet. He briefly paused and said, “I’ll go get them.” While Xiao Su went away, Jiang Xiaobai soaked herself in the water and waited for his return. When the man came back with her clothes, he didn’t directly enter the bathroom, but instead knocked on the door. “Xiaobai, your clothes are here.”
“Come in.” Jiang Xiaobai said in an unconcerned manner while splashing herself with the warm water. “You’ve already seen everything before. So, what’s holding you back?” Xiao Su hesitated, but decided to enter the bathroom in the end. Without looking at Jiang Xiaobai, he placed her clothes on the rack and exited the bathroom, trying to be a gentleman as much as possible.
Jiang Xiaobai was rendered speechless by Xiao Su’s reaction. How is this man still so innocent? He was dominant at that moment, but yet he is acting all innocent. For whom? Therefore, Jiang Xiaobai seductively asked, “Do you want to join me now?” When Xiao Su heard that, he stumbled over his pace on his way and nearly fell. However, he didn’t say anything in the end without even looking back, only closing the door for the lady who was bathing. Hmph! What a hypocrite! He is just pretending to look innocent! Jiang Xiaobai didn’t dwell on the man’s reaction too much, as she continued to indulge in her bath.
The next day, Jiang Xiaobai received a call from Du Xiaoyu. Before answering the call, Jiang Xiaobai was slightly worried that her mother was calling to nag at her about her wedding. Therefore, she directly asked, “Mom, are you going to ask about our horoscopes again? I told you before. People don’t believe that nowadays. So, I’m not going along with you for that.”
“No, it’s not like what you’re thinking.” Du Xiaoyu sounded less domineering than she usually did. “I didn’t call you for the horoscopes.”
“You didn’t call me for that? Then, what did you call me for?” Jiang Xiaobai walked to the balcony from her bed and leaned on the railing while overlooking the view downstairs. The weather is sunny today. Perhaps I could do some shopping with Fang Tangtang later. Jiang Xiaobai thought to herself. “I just want to ask you whether you have plans to marry Xiao Su.” Upon hearing that, Jiang Xiaobai was stunned as she froze for a few moments in silence.
“Relax, Xiaobai. I’m just asking because I only came to realize yesterday that you and Xiao Su are just putting on a show after all, which means there is no true love in your relationship. So, if there is no true love, you both shouldn’t get married, or else you both won’t be happy. Why don’t you break up with him? I’ll introduce someone else to you, or you could take a break if you want.”
Jiang Xiaobai found it strange when she heard Du Xiaoyu’s words. That’s not how my mother behaves. Back then, she wouldn’t put her words like this in such a kind manner. Moreover, she always wants to marry me off so badly as though I wouldn’t be able to find my Mr. Right. Soon, she sensed something amiss. “Mom, you’re acting strange. Tell me what’s going on.”
“N-Nothing! Nothing is going on. I’m just worried about you. What’re you talking about, my girl?” Di Xiaoyu said in an attempt to cover up her anxiety. Nevertheless, her daughter knew her too well to sense something unusual. In the meantime, Jiang Xiaobai carefully recalled the last time her mother called her. She asked for details of my horoscope previously, only to be turned down by me, but she said she would ask for it from Xiao Su’s mother.
At the thought of that, something seemed to dawn on Jiang Xiaobai. Did mom manage to get details about Xiao Su’s horoscope and end up getting an unfavorable answer from the fortune teller? Hmm. This must be the reason why she is acting strangely. “Mom, did you match our horoscopes behind our back?” Du Xiaoyu was taken aback by her daughter’s response. Since when did my girl become so smart? She’s guessed it right.
Nothing To Give But My Heart Chapter 1476
But how can I admit? If I do, it’ll break Xiaobai’s heart. Therefore, Du Xiaoyu immediately denied her daughter’s accusation. “No, because you didn’t agree. So, why would I still do that? Like I said, I subsequently realized that I’ve been putting too much pressure on you. You didn’t want to be in a relationship, but yet I kept forcing your hand that you had to put on a show with a fake boyfriend, whom you eventually ended up dating. So, after a careful deliberation, I decided that you both should put a stop to it before things take a bad turn.”
In fact, those words were a plausible explanation that Du Xiaoyu made up to deflect her daughter’s suspicion, which did not appear to be convincing. Nonetheless, her daughter was too clever to see through her fear that the fortune tellers’ presentiment would come true. Liang Yahe and I were going to put this behind us, but I had a nightmare about my daughter’s marriage the same night. After all, those who know nothing fear nothing, but once they know and wish to try again, they’ll always be held back by fear. It wouldn’t take long before Jiang Xiaobai found loopholes in Du Xiaoyu’s explanation.
“I don’t buy your story, mom. You were previously hopeful about us, but you’re now acting like a different person.” Upon saying that, Jiang Xiaobai started becoming more serious. “Mom, I need you to tell me honestly. Did you sneak behind our back to consult a fortune teller with our horoscopes? Then, when the result turned out to be unfavorable, you want me to break up with Xiao Su.”
“How could you say that, my girl?” Du Xiaoyu said with a timorous voice as she was afraid that her daughter would see through her. “I already told you I didn’t. I even asked you earlier on, didn’t I? I gave up the idea right after you disagreed.”
“That’s not who you are.” Jiang Xiaobai said in disbelief, “Mom, I know you too well. No one can sway you once you make up your mind. You’ve always been this way since I was little. In fact, it’s not just me because you hardly ever listen to dad’s words as well. So, I doubt you didn’t visit the fortune tellers. Moreover, Xiao Su’s mom is desperate to make me her daughter-in-law, so she’ll likely agree to any condition you put forth to her.”
Oh gosh! She’s gotten every detail precisely correct. Du Xiaoyu was rendered speechless by her daughter, not knowing what else she could say in her defense. She was reluctant to admit it because she didn’t want to break Jiang Xiaobai’s heart. Besides, as the latter’s mother, Du Xiaoyu knew her daughter wouldn’t have begun a relationship with a man if she hadn’t fallen for him. After all, Jiang Xiaobai used to be a free spirit who deemed that a relationship would tie her down. It seems that she is serious about her relationship with Xiao Su now that they have become a couple and are well liked by the elderly. However, that’s exactly why I want to make her see my point, but my girl is too clever to see through me.
At the thought of that, Du Xiaoyu let out a sigh. “Alas! Since you’ve figured it out, I guess there’s nothing much I can say.” Jiang Xiaobai knew she was right, but when she heard her mother’s confession firsthand, she still felt a sting of pain. She then bit her lips as her anger slowly overwhelmed her. “Mom, didn’t I make myself clear about my objection? Why didn’t you listen to me?”
“I did this for your sake, my girl. I’m your mother, and do you think I’d set you up?”
“But I don’t need it at all!” Jiang Xiaobai exhaled deeply, blowing her bangs upward. “I told you nobody believes that anymore in this modern era, but you wouldn’t listen. Now that you went ahead and got an unfavorable result, you start acting paranoid, even wanting me to break up with him.”
“I know things like this can be odd to believe, but they turn out to be true most of the time. I consulted a few fortune tellers with Xiao Su’s mom yesterday, and they all said the same thing. I wouldn’t believe it if it was just one man’s words, but how can I not be worried when all of them gave the same answer?”
“That’s all because you were too stubborn to listen. It wouldn’t have happened had you listened to me!”
“But what’s done is done. It’s too late to turn back now.”
“It’s all your fault that you didn’t listen!” Jiang Xiaobai said with an angry voice. I just want a peaceful relationship, but my mom is definitely not helping. “Initially, I didn’t want to be in a relationship, but you kept pushing me so far that I had to rent a room outside because I didn’t dare to go home. Now that I’m finally in a relationship, you’re forcing me to break up with him. Mom, are you really doing this for my good? Why must my life go on as you plan? I’m not a kid anymore. I’m a grown adult, and I want to decide for my own future!”
For the first time, Jiang Xiaobai talked back to Du Xiaoyu, while the latter was surprised by her obedient daughter’s response, as she didn’t know what to say in that instant. “Xiaobai, I’m just…”
“Alright, mom. Cut it off.” Jiang Xiaobai interrupted her words agitatedly, as she still hadn’t calmed herself down. She then took a deep breath and said, “I’m sorry, mom. I didn’t mean to be rude, but those words are my actual thoughts. I don’t want you to keep making life decisions for me because I want to be in control of my own life, and I’m prepared for any outcome no matter how it plays out. As for my relationship, it’s my decision to make whether I’ll marry him. If I don’t want to marry him, you can never force my hand, but if I want to, you can’t change my mind either, not even with the words you heard from those fortune tellers. That’s all I want to say.” Upon saying that, Jiang Xiaobai immediately hung up the call.
“Xiaobai, hear me out…” Before Du Xiaoyu could continue her words, she heard a busy tone, which began to panic her. What’s wrong with my girl? She wasn’t like that. Du Xiaoyu tried to call Jiang Xiaobai again, but to no avail as the latter had turned off her phone. Why does she seem to know every move I was going to make? Therefore, Jiang Xiaobai was out of reach at the moment.
After turning off her phone, Jiang Xiaobai threw her phone to the bed and leaned on the balcony. I was thinking about shopping with Fang Tangtang on this sunny day, but I guess I’ve lost all my mood for that. Oh man! I’m so worked up! I told her not to match our horoscopes, but she just wouldn’t listen! More importantly, she didn’t get the result she wanted. Troubled and disturbed, Jiang Xiaobai stayed in the balcony for a while before she entered the house.
Although Xiao Su is now at work, I’m not sure how he is going to feel as my mom if he finds out about this because he still hasn’t completely fallen for me yet. At the thought of that, something suddenly sprang to Jiang Xiaobai’s mind as she paused. Wait a second! Didn’t mom say Xiao Su’s mother tagged along with her? Now that she doesn’t want me to be with Xiao Su, is Xiao Su’s mother going to feel the same way? After all, every parent would want what’s best for their children. So, has Xiao Su’s mom brought this up to him? As she thought about that, she soon felt her blood running cold all over her body.
Nothing To Give But My Heart Chapter 1477
What would Xiao Su think if Liang Yahe really called and told him the outcome?
Would he share the thoughts of his older relatives? After all, Jiang Xiaobai wasn’t as important as Yan.
In that instant, Jiang Xiaobai’s mood had turned from bad to worse.
She directly called Fang Tangtang to ask her out for a drink.
Fang Tangtang was still asleep when she received the call. Awakened by the phone call, she questioned in a muffled voice, “Who on earth woke me up early in the morning?”
“Tangtang, come out for a drink.”
After giving it a thought, Fang Tangtang recognized that it was the voice of her best friend, Jiang Xiaobai. Turning over, she said helplessly, “Now? Are you out of your mind? It’s early in the morning now. Which bar would open for you even if you want to drink?”
Hearing that, Jiang Xiaobai remained silent for a moment and suggested, “Instead of a bar, let’s go to a convenience store that sells beer then.”
Fang Tangtang sat straight up in fury.
“What is wrong with you?!”
Jiang Xiaobai remained silent.
Fang Tangtang continued, “Did you quarrel with your man?”
“No.”
“No? Then why do you want to drink in the morning? Please, you’re no longer a child. As adults, we should be more rational. I brought you to a bar to release your stress some time back, but it doesn’t mean you could do that every time you’re in a bad mood.”
Jiang Xiaobai closed her eyes and inquired, “Then what should I do?”
Her voice sounded tired and helpless. Fang Tangtang realized that something might have happened to her. She was sleepy, but she decided to cheer her friend up. “Forget it. Perhaps I owed you in my previous life. Where are you? I’ll buy some food and beverages from a supermarket and go find you, alright?”
Jiang Xiaobai told her the address.
Thirty minutes later, Fang Tangtang reached Jiang Xiaobai’s home with grocery bags in her hands. To be precise, it was Xiao Su’s home.
When Jiang Xiaobai opened the door and saw so many bags in her hands, she wanted to give her a hand.
Fang Tangtang directly said, “Nevermind, I’m good. Look how dejected you are. Just take a seat on the couch.”
Jiang Xiaobai pressed her lips together and slumped into the couch.
Fang Tangtang was furious. “Hey, you really took a seat?! How impolite! What a bad friend!”
Upon chiding her jokingly, Fang Tangtang put down the things and placed them properly as she looked at the decorations in the house and said, “These things seem to be from your previous house. Did you empty that house?”
“Almost,” Jiang Xiaobai replied lethargically.
Without continuing the conversation, Fang Tangtang took a seat beside her and passed a glass of milk and sandwich to her a few minutes later.
Seeing that, Jiang Xiaobai frowned. “I don’t want these.”
“You have to eat these in the morning. No one drinks beer so early. You just woke up from a sleep, so it isn’t good to drink beer on an empty stomach. I treasure my own life even if you don’t. What if something happens to you when you’re drinking? Other people would blame me for that! Now take them and eat!” Fang Tangtang dominatingly ordered.
Jiang Xiaobai was speechless. She called her to come here because she was upset. Not only did Fang Tangtang not bring any beer, she also brought breakfast and even chided her.
Nevertheless, Jiang Xiaobai took over the sandwich and milk.
Lowering her head, she took a bite and didn’t taste any flavor.
“Come on, I’m all ears. What happened?”
Jiang Xiaobai didn’t answer her question at first as she quietly drank the milk as though it was beer and took a bite of the sandwich.
Then, she told her the situation she was in.
Upon hearing her story, Fang Tangtang wided her eyes in disbelief. “No way. We’re in the twenty-first century. Even if your mom believes it, do you believe it as well?”
“I don’t.”
“Why are you unhappy since you don’t believe it?”
Jiang Xiaobai remained silent and continued munching on the sandwich.
Recalling her words and expression, Fang Tangtang suddenly asked, “Are you unhappy because you’re afraid that Xiao Su would think in the same way as the older relatives once he finds out about it?”
Her words hit the nail right in the head. Unable to refute, Jiang Xiaobai angrily placed the milk and sandwich on the table.
“I’m full.”
“Oh well.” Fang Tangtang shot her a disdainful look. “Aren’t you Jiang Xiaobai? All the characters are under your control when you write. Why are you worried and unhappy because of a man now? Xiaobai, have you fallen for Xiao Su?”
Fallen for him?
Jiang Xiaobai once thought that she might have fallen for Xiao Su, but she didn’t think she loved him.
Shaking her head, she said softly, “I’m still observing him. I might not even like him, let alone falling for him.”
“How stubborn.” Fang Tangtang mocked, “Since you’re unwilling to admit it, let me put it this way. Considering that you’re still observing him, if he really shares the thoughts of the older relatives, then just break up with him. It’s still in the observation stage, isn’t it?”
Jiang Xiaobai’s mouth twitched as she stared at Fang Tangtang and felt like punching her. Did she make the right move by calling her to come here? Perhaps they were so close to each other that Fang Tangtang never minced her words. Sigh.
“Did I say it wrongly? You said that you’re still observing him. It means that he’s still not officially your boyfriend, right? You don’t love him, and if he can’t pass this observation stage, then just break up with him. What’s wrong with that?”
Jiang Xiaobai decided to turn around and ignore her.
Fang Tangtang leaned in and said, “You’ve developed feelings for him over time, and gave him a pass for the observation stage. You have even thought about marrying him, right?”
“Stop it.” Jiang Xiaobai interrupted and said seriously, “I like him, otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten together with him. However, I don’t think I can convince myself to say that I love him. Love isn’t as simple as we’ve imagined, and I’ve never thought about marriage, otherwise this observation stage wouldn’t have existed.”
After all, Xiao Su wanted to take up the responsibility. If she really wanted marriage, she could have demanded him to be responsible in such a way.
However, to Jiang Xiaobai, she cared about her own feelings as well as whether they were compatible with each other. She was rational and knew what she wanted.
She was gripped by fear because she had lost control of her emotions and fallen helplessly in love with Xiao Su.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have felt so upset when Xiao Su rushed over to save the woman he fancied.
“So what’s your plan now? What if… I’m saying what if… he trusted what the older relatives said?”
Nothing To Give But My Heart Chapter 1478
What if Xiao Su believed what the older relatives said and thought they were not suitable together?
Jiang Xiaobai looked away and smiled bitterly.
“Dump him then.”
If that were the case, I’d just leave him. I could fall in love with him, but I could also leave him without reluctance, Jiang Xiaobai thought to herself.
Looking at her smile, Fang Tangtang was speechless.
What was on Jiang Xiaobai’s mind was that once Xiao Su hesitated a little, or that he believed what the older relatives said, she would leave him without any hesitation.
Liang Yahe didn’t tell her own son about this news. However, she was in a difficult situation as well. She couldn’t sleep for the entire night and pestered her husband about it.
“Mingzhi, what do you think we should do? I didn’t inform them in advance when I had their fortunes read by a fortune teller. I thought that the outcome would be a good one. However, it turned out that they were destined to part ways. What should I do? I don’t have the courage to tell them about it.”
Liang Yahe had talked incessantly about it the entire night. Initially, Xiao Mingzhi would console her.
“It’s a new era now, so please don’t be superstitious anymore. You wouldn’t be upset if you never went to a fortune teller. They’re getting along well, and we have a good rapport with her parents. Why should we be worried about the unforeseeable future?”
Liang Yahe found him sensible. “I agree with you. Sigh. Why did I go to the fortune teller in the first place? However, I had asked other fortune tellers as well, and they all gave me the same outcome. Do you think this could be true?”
“How could this be true?” Xiao Mingzhi said helplessly, “Nobody can predict the future, and nothing is destined. Moreover, if there is really any hurdle in their relationship, that could be a test for their love.”
“I’m still worried. What should I do? Should I tell Xiao Su?”
“Don’t tell him.” Xiao Mingzhi disagreed, “He didn’t have a girlfriend before. Now that he’s found a girlfriend, it means that he loves that woman. Your son is a mature man who has fallen in love with a woman of his choice, so please don’t scare away the woman with such superstition.”
“You have a point, but I’m still worried,” Liang Yahe sighed. Unable to sleep, she decided to sit up. “You know how much I like Xiaobai. Even if I don’t tell them, Xiaobai’s mom would inform her own daughter. What if Xiaobai decides to dump Xiao Su?”
“Like I said, you wouldn’t have faced such a problem if you never went to the fortune teller. Without the fortune-telling, the two families would be happy discussing marriage now. I think you simply have too much spare time, that’s why you keep finding trouble for yourself.”
“You can’t say that!” Liang Yahe slapped her husband in displeasure and snorted, “You’re so obsessed with work that you don’t even want to help with the preparations of your son’s wedding. He is our son. Now that I need to discuss it with you, you just blame it all on me! Fine, I don’t want to care about it anymore. You’ll handle it!”
With that, Liang Yahe turned over and ignored her husband.
Xiao Mingzhi was sleepy, and it was time to sleep because he had to get to work the next morning. He was upset that Liang Yahe nagged him incessantly and wouldn’t let him sleep. However, since she was his wife, he had no choice but to put up with it.
Seeing that she was angry, he dared not ignore her and sat straight up.
“Fine, I’m wrong. It’s not your problem. Blame me for my obsession with work. I’ll spend more time disciplining our son. Sleep now and stop caring about this matter. I’ll handle it.”
Liang Yahe didn’t go easy on him as she stared at him and questioned, “How will you handle it? Are you going to tell Xiao Su about it?”
“I won’t.” Xiao Mingzhi directly rejected that idea. “As his parents, we should believe in his choice of partner.”
Xiao Su’s parents were different from Jiang Xiaobai’s parents in the way that they didn’t know Xiao Su and Jiang Xiaobai pretended to be partners at first until they eventually fell in love with each other. Hence, they thought that she was the girlfriend Xiao Su chased after.
“I believe in him, and I like Xiaobai as well. I don’t want any daughter-in-law other than Xiaobai.”
Jiang Xiaobai was a beautiful and kind lady. Liang Yahe had always wanted a daughter. However, she had become weak upon giving birth to Xiao Su. Perhaps it was because of fate that she never managed to get impregnated with a second child, therefore she never had a chance to have a daughter in her life.
She was genuinely happy that her son had found a beautiful and clever girlfriend.
“I know you like Xiaobai, but are you sure her parents wouldn’t tell her about it? Look how worried you are after you came back. Xiaobai will be marrying into our family, so you can imagine how worried her parents are right now.”
Liang Yahe found him reasonable upon hearing that.
“Yes, Xiaobai is their only daughter, and judging from her manners, her parents have raised her well. They must be worried. Sigh. What should we do?”
“It’s pointless that you’re so worried now. Let’s just sleep. I said I would handle this matter. Staying up late isn’t good for our health.”
“All you know is sleep! Your future daughter-in-law is leaving our son soon, so how could you sleep in peace?” Liang Yahe was so furious that she tossed the pillow at her husband and lifted the quilt before storming out of the room.
Having been hurled a pillow on his face, Xiao Mingzhi felt helpless. However, he decided to follow his wife to the living room and passed his phone to her.
“If you really don’t know what to do, call Xiao Su now and tell him what happened today.”
Hearing that, Liang Yahe looked up at him in shock and exclaimed in disbelief, “Are you out of your mind?”
“Don’t you know how to handle this matter? Just tell him about it. It’s his girlfriend, so let him settle it himself.”
In that instant, Liang Yahe felt like punching her husband and decided to stop talking to him.
No matter how hard Xiao Mingzhi persuaded, she just wouldn’t listen to him. In the end, he couldn’t sleep as well, and they just stayed in the living room until the next morning.
At the break of dawn, Liang Yahe hurriedly took out her phone and called her future in-law.
She was worried that it might be too early to call as Du Xiaoyu might not be awake yet, and that she would disturb her sleep.
Nonetheless, the call was answered after a short while.
“Hello?”
“Hi, Mrs. Jiang!” Liang Yahe called out politely. Her voice had become a little hoarse because she never slept for a night.
“It’s you.” Meanwhile, Du Xiaoyu’s voice was just as tired and lethargic.
Nothing To Give But My Heart Chapter 1479
Noticing Du Xiaoyu’s hoarse voice, Liang Yahe inquired in embarrassment, “Mrs. Jiang, what happened to your voice?”
Her own voice had turned hoarse because she never slept at all. Was it the same case for Du Xiaoyu?
Du Xiaoyu heaved a sigh over the phone and confessed, “I didn’t sleep well last night, so my voice has changed a little. You also didn’t sleep well, right?”
Liang Yahe heaved a sigh as well upon hearing her confession.
“Yes, I was so worried that I couldn’t sleep at all. After I came home yesterday, my mind was occupied with that matter and I couldn’t have peace of mind. Therefore, I think I should call you to talk about it. Please don’t tell them what happened. After all, they’re getting along well now. If we talk about such a thing all of a sudden, they will be upset.”
Liang Yahe wasn’t confident when she said those words as her voice slowly lowered, “Mrs. Jiang, I’m sorry for being selfish, but I think that Xiao Su and Xiaobai are adults now, and that they have their own opinions. As their parents, we can discuss it with them, but we can’t try to change their minds. If they insist on staying together, we shouldn’t become their hurdles. Otherwise, they’d be sad.”
Du Xiaoyu remained silent for a long time, and only her breathing was heard. Liang Yahe was anxious. “Did I say anything wrong?”
“No.” Du Xiaoyu shook her head. She never slept last night, and the first thing she did when she woke up was to call Jiang Xiaobai. However, she felt differently now.
What Jiang Xiaobai said echoed in her ears.
“That’s because you never listened to me. If you did, such a thing wouldn’t have happened! I didn’t want to talk about it before, but you forced me into it. I didn’t even have the courage to come home, so I could only rent a house outside. Now that I’m willing to talk about it, you’re forcing me to leave him. Mom, are you really doing it for my own good? Why should I live my life according to your plan? I’m not a kid anymore. I’m an adult. Why can’t I plan for my own life? These words come from my heart. I don’t want to live under your rules anymore, and I will live my life in my own way. No matter what happens, I will take up the responsibility myself.”
Her daughter had always been obedient. Because she was the only daughter, she could always get what she wanted as Du Xiaoyu would never mistreat her daughter one bit. However, while she was doting on Jiang Xiaobai, she was also trying to mould her into an ideal daughter. That was why she wanted her daughter to live according to her plan.
If it wasn’t for Jiang Xiaobai’s resistance this time, Du Xiaoyu would never have thought that what she did in the past would have such a huge impact on her daughter’s life.
It was true that her daughter had grown up and was no longer a kid. She wasn’t a marionette, so how could she be manipulated by her own mother? Unfortunately, Du Xiaoyu understood it too late.
If she could come to her senses earlier, she wouldn’t have told her about it. Now Jiang Xiaobai had learned about it, and Liang Yahe was obviously more respectful of their children and her. She waited for the night to be over before she made a call to discuss the matter.
Thinking of that, Du Xiaoyu felt utterly guilty.
“I’m sorry, Yahe. I told my daughter about it this morning.”
“What?” Liang Yahe was shocked. “You told her? When was it?”
“Not long before you called me.”
In that instant, Liang Yahe was lost for words.
“I might have done the wrong thing. Sorry.”
Liang Yahe regained her senses after a long while and replied with a smile, “It’s fine. As her mother, it’s natural that you would want to tell her. How about this… I won’t tell Xiao Su. Since Xiaobai has learned about it, it’ll depend on her own will. If Xiaobai isn’t willing to marry Xiao Su, we won’t force her into it.”
Du Xiaoyu was stunned upon hearing that. “Don’t you think this is unfair to Xiao Su?”
“My son finally found a girlfriend after being single for a long time. I trust his choice and his ability to handle his own matters. Moreover, rather than letting Heaven dictate our fates, we should rely on our own. If you’re destined to have no achievements in life, are you really going to give up on yourself? My son doesn’t believe in fate, so I’m sure he won’t mind it.”
After the conversation ended, Du Xiaoyu was restless.
Liang Yahe had shown enough sincerity. Now, it depended on how Jiang Xiaobai would take it.
When Xiao Su came home from work in the evening, he found the atmosphere in the house strange.
The house was dark as the lights were turned off in the living room. After a trance, he turned on the lights and realized that the table was covered with snacks, while Jiang Xiaobai was sleeping on the couch in pajamas.
Seeing that, Xiao Su frowned and took off his shoes before walking over.
Why is she sleeping on the couch instead of going to the bedroom? Although there’s a heater in the living room, it’s winter after all. She might get a cold.
Soon, Xiao Su lifted her off the couch and wanted to carry her to the bedroom.
However, as soon as Jiang Xiaobai was carried up, she awakened and rubbed her sleepy eyes.
“Oh, you’re back.”
Xiao Su sniffed and pressed his lips together before asking, “Did you drink beer?”
“Err, just a little.”
With that, Jiang Xiaobai tapped his hand. “Put me down.”
Xiao Su was worried that she was intoxicated. However, judging from her gaze and tone, she seemed to be sober. Nevertheless, he never put her down and said, “Are you sleepy? Don’t sleep here. I’ll carry you to the bedroom.”
“No, no, no.” Jiang Xiaobai rejected, “I’m not sleepy. I just dozed off. Put me down. I want to stay here.”
After Xiao Su put her down, she directly slumped into the couch. Hugging her pillow, she pointed at the seat beside her.
“Come on, have a seat.”
Noticing her unusual behavior, Xiao Su silently took a seat beside her.
He was waiting for her to speak first, but she remained silent for a long time. Looking at her, he inquired, “What’s wrong? Why did you drink beer suddenly?”
“Because I felt like drinking beer. Do you want to stop me? Xiao Su, do you think that upon becoming my boyfriend, you can interfere in my matters?”
Xiao Su pursed his lips and questioned, “Can’t I?”
“No!”
“No way.” Xiao Su grabbed her fair wrists with his warm palms. “I have to interfere in some matters. For example, if I don’t care how you simply sleep on the couch at night, you might catch a cold. What will happen to you if you overdrink while I’m not at home?”
Jiang Xiaobai had managed to bring herself together, but upon hearing what he said, she was immediately gripped by a feeling of grievance.
Nothing To Give But My Heart Chapter 1480
Jiang Xiaobai could feel that her eyes had welled up, but she didn’t like the state she was in, therefore she looked away to evade Xiao Su’s gaze.
Then, she withdrew her hands and mocked, “What are you talking about? I’m an adult, so what could happen to me? Moreover, I don’t need you to look after me.”
Jiang Xiaobai’s action was swift, but when she looked away, Xiao Su caught a glimpse of her reddened eyes. He thought he saw it wrongly and wanted to be certain, therefore he leaned in to her.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Jiang Xiaobai raised her hand to stop him. “Don’t look.”
She almost sounded like crying. Xiao Su thus furrowed his eyebrows together and grasped her wrists before adjusting her posture so that she would face him.
Jiang Xiaobai never expected that he would do such a thing and met with his gaze without warning. After a moment of shock, she hurriedly hung her head low.
“Are you crying?”
“No.” Jiang Xiaobai’s voice sounded sulky. “I’m just sleepy because I haven’t had enough sleep. Why should I cry?”
Although they hadn’t been together for a long time, Xiao Su knew a thing or two about her.
He knew that Jiang Xiaobai was the kind of woman who would cry out loud in front of him when she was emotionally stirred by a drama. She would bawl so loudly that she wouldn’t mind others’ perceptions of her.
However, when she was sorrowful, she would remain silent and wouldn’t want others to find out.
Therefore, Xiao Su soon realized that she was really upset.
“What happened?”
“Nothing happened.” Jiang Xiaobai shook her head as she didn’t know how she should tell him. Moreover, she wasn’t certain if his mother had told him about it.
“Xiaobai.” Xiao Su sounded helpless and sighed, “Look how dejected you are. Do you think I’ll believe you when you say nothing’s happened?”
She didn’t want to show her emotions, but when she saw Xiao Su’s face and his gaze, she just couldn’t help expressing the grievance in her heart.
What was she doing? Why were her emotions so out of control?
Having been seen through, it was useless to keep denying.
Jiang Xiaobai directly admitted, “Yes, you’re right. I’m not happy.”
“What’s wrong?”
Upon observing his expression, Jiang Xiaobai realized that he really was clueless.
“Xiaobai?”
“Nothing.” Jiang Xiaobai shook her head. “It’s just that I suddenly thought of something unhappy, and I don’t want to tell you at the moment.”
Her words rendered Xiao Su speechless, but he could only let her be as he hugged her closer to himself.
“Is it about me?”
“Yes,” Jiang Xiaobai admitted.
“Then you should tell me about it. Isn’t there a saying ‘whoever started the trouble should end it’?”
Whoever started the trouble should end it?
Jiang Xiaobai remained silent upon hearing that.
In fact, Liang Yahe had called her before Xiao Su got off work. Jiang Xiaobai already knew about the fortune-telling matter, so Liang Yahe never beat around the bush and directly told her what she thought about it.
“Xiaobai, your mom already told me about your situation. I know that we shouldn’t have gotten your fortune read behind your back, but you have to trust me that we wanted a good outcome instead of a bad one. We’re not happy with the result. Even your mom and I haven’t slept the entire night. I didn’t want to tell you at first, but after giving it a thought, I think I should respect your will and let you decide.”
“Mrs. Xiao?”
“Xiao Su is a man, so my husband and I have given him enough freedom since he was young. He’s been living on his own for the past few years. After the plane crash, he was left with a scar on his face. It didn’t look nice, but at least he survived. Therefore, now we never demand anything from him. We just want him to live a good life and marry the woman he loves so that he would spend the rest of his life in happiness. Since Xiao Su has chosen you, as his parents, we wouldn’t object to it.”
At this point, Jiang Xiaobai understood what Liang Yahe was trying to say.
“Mrs. Xiao, do you want me to make my own decision?”
“Yes.” Liang Yahe heaved a sigh and said gently, “Both my husband and I really like you. If you’re willing to be part of our family, we’ll be more than happy. However, even if you don’t want to marry him, we’ll still be your family. No matter what trouble you’ll face in the future, you can always come find us.”
Jiang Xiaobai’s eyes reddened, and her nose turned sore. She couldn’t utter a word.
“Mrs. Xiao…”
“Xiaobai, don’t cry. I’m not telling you this to force you to make a decision. I just feel that as women, our lives are difficult and we’re different from the guys. Your youth is only so short, so you have to be more selective when choosing your partner. Don’t marry the wrong man. As a woman myself, I can totally relate to it. Don’t blame your mom. I’m sure she only decided to tell you after struggling internally for a long time herself.”
Biting her lip, Jiang Xiaobai couldn’t utter a word.
“You don’t have to tell me now as I can wait. I won’t tell Xiao Su about it, so you’ll make that decision on your own. If you don’t think it’ll work, I’ll be the bad person and stop Xiao Su from marrying you. However, if you think you’re okay with it, we’ll pretend that nothing has happened and you’ll live happily with him.”
After the call ended, Jiang Xiaobai sobbed uncontrollably. She only managed to compose herself after crying for a long time. Upon washing up, she calmed down and waited for Xiao Su to come home.
Now Xiao Su was asking her what was wrong. Facing his gaze, Jiang Xiaobai thought of what Liang Yahe told her.
He was Liang Yahe’s child. Although they didn’t start off loving each other, they had come to a point where Jiang Xiaobai felt that Xiao Su had done a lot for her.
She wasn’t talking about money, but the efforts Xiao Su had put in for her. He was making changes for her and cared about her feelings.
In light of that, Jiang Xiaobai felt that it wouldn’t be fair to him if she never told him about this outcome.
He was a man with his own thoughts and feelings, therefore he had a right to know the truth.
She shouldn’t be the only person making the decision.
With that thought in her mind, Jiang Xiaobai pressed her lips together and stared at Xiao Su.
“There’s something I need to tell you.”
Xiao Su could instantly feel that her gaze and expression had turned serious, thus he tensed up as well. “What is it?”
