After that, he pulled hard at Shen Qi’s hand. Once he grabbed her arm, he realized that her skin was as delicate and as soft as a baby. After a pause, he couldn’t help but glance at her.

“Let me go!” Shen Qi swung his hand away with all her might. Xu Liao was enchanted by that tender touch he felt just now. At this moment, he coughed. “Fine. I’ll wait for you outside. Make it quick.”

After that, Xu Liao left.

When most of the people had left, Shen Qi walked toward Ye Moxuan.

“Well… about yesterday…” Shen Qi spoke in a low voice.

Right at this moment, Ye Moxuan’s phone rang and he answered it with an indifferent face. “What is it?”

Since he was answering a call, Shen Qi could only hold her tongue.

Then, she saw him nod and say ‘alright’ before he hung up his phone and spoke to Xiao Su, “Let’s go.”

Xiao Su glanced at Shen Qi awkwardly and gave her a look before pushing Ye Moxuan away.

From the beginning to the end, he didn’t even glance at her.

Shen Qi, who sought to speak to him, looked like a clown and was completely ignored by him.

A gentle voice rang from behind. When Shen Qi turned around, she saw Ye Linhan.

When she was leaving, she could sense a gaze following her all the while. Overwhelmed with complicated emotions, she could only cast those frustrating thoughts aside and forget about them.

As soon as she returned to the department, she received Cui Minli and Gao Yun’s resentful gaze.

They obviously weren’t as smug as before the meeting. It seemed like they were extremely disappointed that their scheme failed.

“I thought you would have been bullied to tears but surprisingly, you actually fought back even though it was your first day there. On top of that, you did it amazingly! I bet the supervisor and those people who waited to see how you would make a fool out of yourself are sulking right now.”

Shen Qi did not reply to her right away but instead added with some concern, “Right now, many in the company can’t wait to see how I’m going to embarrass myself. If you continue to stick with me, you might get implicated.”

Yan said in a happy-go-lucky manner, “It doesn’t matter. I work in the finance department in which my father is the head. I bet they wouldn’t dare to do anything out of bounds to me.”

Shen Qi asked, “I’ve never thought of this. Will it work?”

“Of course. Do you know I’m involved in the issuance of everyone’s salary? Ha ha.”

Shen Qi got the idea—it turned out that Yan had some control over their livelihoods.

“Although I can’t deduct their salary according to my wish, I can delay giving it to them! Do you know that many of those living in big cities are living from paycheck to paycheck? Every month, they wait desperately for the day they receive their salaries. If I make some effort to delay pay out for one or two days, their lives would become very miserable.”

Shen Qi was impressed. “Splendid!”

After the two had lunch, Shen Qi returned to her seat. As her computer was rather aged, she had to spend some time tinkering with it.

Sitting on the chair, she heard footsteps coming from behind.

She turned around with a frown and saw Xu Liao walking toward her with a cup of coffee in his hand. He placed the coffee in front of Shen Qi and asked, “Hmm… What is your name again?”

Xu Liao wanted to talk to her but he found that he actually had no idea what her name was. Because she was demoted, she was placed in his department without going through the formal procedure. Therefore, it was not recorded in the system yet.

Shen Qi glanced at him icily, ignored his question and took a look at the cup of coffee.

“Supervisor, how can I help you?”

Rubbing his palms together, Xu Liao answered with a grin, “It’s okay if you don’t feel like revealing your name. Since you’re new to the department, I’ll just call you Ni.”

Shen Qi was speechless. Did the name Ni had anything to do with the fact that she was new?

“Supervisor, you can call me Shen.”

She did not feel like revealing her name to this man standing in front of her who looked hostile and who tried to sabotage her in the morning.

“Shen? Shen is marvelous!” Xu Liao took a step forward, grinning as he pointed at the cup of coffee. “I bought it specially for you, so drink it while it’s hot.”

Shen Qi snapped, “Supervisor, what exactly do you need me for?

“It’s actually nothing much.” Rubbing his hands together, Xu Liao got closer to her once again. The expression on Shen Qi changed slightly and she immediately took several steps back to maintain the distance between them. When she took a glimpse at the lewdness in his eyes, she suddenly realized something.

Rooted to the spot, she snarled icily, “Don’t you get any closer!”

Following her howl, Xu Liao actually did stop moving. He did not look angry but he kept peeking at her smooth arm and slender neck lustily.

“To be honest, Shen, you’re here because you got demoted and prior to this, I suppose you have offended many in the company, right? Everyone can’t wait to see how you will embarrass yourself, and many are keen to sabotage you. Do you know Qiangwei from the design department? Before you were transferred here, she had specially asked me to do her a favor by giving you some special treatment. Do you understand what I’m saying?”

Shen Qi remained quiet.

Xu Liao continued, “However, I thought what she did was outright inappropriate. How could they sabotage such an adorable young lady like you? Was it just because they couldn’t get close to President Yu despite being smitten by him while you could? Their behavior is totally unacceptable.”

What he said put a frown on Shen Qi’s face. “What on earth are you trying to say?”

“I just want to protect you. I didn’t follow what Qiangwei asked me to do and what happened this morning was purely an accident. Shen, I promise such a thing will never happen again.”

As he was talking, he inched closer to Shen Qi. Knowing well what he had in mind, Shen Qi let out a sneer, “Don’t you dare take one more step toward me.”

Xu Liao’s pace came to a halt as he persuaded with a fake smile on his face, “Shen, do you know that a wise man will choose his actions according to the circumstances he is in? Right now, you’ve already been demoted to my department. As long as I’m willing to back you up, you’ll be bullied less and you’ll have fewer obstacles in your road ahead. Don’t you think that’s great?”

Seeing that Shen Qi was not responding to him, Xu Liao continued to convince her. “Although I’m not as good as the president, hasn’t he already dumped you after all? Why don’t you just be with me? Although I might not be as powerful and rich as him, I promise you I will not abandon you for no valid reason. What do you think?”

Shen Qi was wordless.

It never occurred to her that this was actually what he was going after.

“Shen, give it a thought. A wise man knows what to do according to the circumstances, but I won’t force you into doing anything you don’t want. I’ll give you two days.”

With that, Xu Liao turned around and left without waiting for Shen Qi to speak.

After he left, Shen Qi secretly rolled her eyes instinctively. Was that man a freak? She didn’t even feel like being Ye Moxuan’s lover. How was it impossible that she would be willing to be his lover?

As Xu Liao had lingered at her desk for too long a time, Shen Qi suddenly had the feeling that the surrounding air had been contaminated.

“Qi, I’ve bought this specially for you. Open it later at night when you’re home.”

“Why are you giving me this all of a sudden?” Shen Qi stared at the bag in puzzlement. She had no idea what was inside but it looked like it cost a bomb.

Han Xueyou’s eyes were slightly dodgy as she let out an awkward chuckle. “Why can’t I do that? When I bought one for myself, I thought of you, so I got one for you too. You don’t dislike me, do you?”

“Of course not.” Shen Qi rolled her eyes at her before continuing. “You know me. Why would I dislike you? What’s more, you made a trip just to give me this!”

“It’s nothing. I’ll do my best and treat you well from now on, Qi!”

Shen Qi was puzzled. “Why do you have to do that? Have you done something bad behind my back?”

Han Xueyou’s face turned pale as she quickly clarified, “What nonsense are you talking about? When have I ever done something bad behind your back? Qi, you’re getting better and better at making fun of me. Humph.”

“That’s not the case. Thank you so much for this.”

“Humph, who needs your appreciation. I’ve got to go.”

“Qi!”

Yan’s voice came from behind. Shen Qi turned around to take a look and found that she was walking toward her.

“Is that your friend?” asked Han Xueyou after taking a look at Yan who was far away from them.

Shen Qi nodded before answering, “She’s a colleague who treats me rather nicely in the office.”

“Okay. I’ll visit you in two days.”

As Han Xueyou drove away, Yan happened to reach Shen Qi’s side. Craning her neck to look in the direction where Han Xueyou had just left, she commented with disgust, “Yucks, is that b*tchy woman the one I came across on social media?”

Because of Yan’s comment, Shen Qi looked offended at once.

“Yan, what nonsense are you talking about?”

Yan realized that she had said the wrong thing. “Fine, fine. I shouldn’t have said it in your presence.”

She giggled and did not look like she took it seriously at all. “Why are you out here? Was your friend here to visit you?”

“Yes.” Only when Shen Qi heard Yan addressing Han Xueyou as her friend did her facial expression become friendlier. She lowered her head and took a glance at the bag in her hand. “She was here to send me something.”

“What’s that?” Yan took the bag over and glanced at it. She could not help but let out a wow as she commented, “It’s the latest Louis Vuitton bag! Damn, your friend is loaded, Qi.”

As someone who did not buy luxury items, Shen Qi didn’t know how much it cost but judging from Yan’s eyes which lit up at the sight of the bag, she had the rough idea that it must have cost a bomb. She then took it back and glanced at it before saying, “If this is so expensive, I think I should give it back to her the next time I see her.”

“Why should you return it?” Yan cast her a sideway glance before blurting suddenly, “Why did she give you such an expensive gift out of the blue? Has she done something bad to you?”

Shen Qi’s heart skipped a beat when she heard her. It took her by surprise that Yan would harbor the same thought as what she had in mind earlier although Yan had made the comments casually.

The thing was, she was very close to Han Xueyou back then but it was never their custom to send each other gifts frequently. On top of that, Han Xueyou would never buy expensive gifts for her. Today, it was the first time she gave her such an expensive gift.

“You are talking nonsense again!” Shen Qi pulled a long face as she was genuinely angry.

Yan immediately offered her apology with a smile, “Sorry about that. I was just joking. Please don’t be angry.”

As Shen Qi was genuinely annoyed, she turned around and was ready to go. Yan immediately caught up to her and pleaded, “Qi, please don’t be angry with me. I was just joking and I meant no harm.”

Suddenly, Shen Qi’s pace came to a halt.

It was because she caught sight of someone who looked familiar standing at the entrance of the office tower; she was craning her neck trying to peek inside but she was stopped by the security guards from going in.

The person looked very familiar to Shen Qi. She was someone whom Shen Qi had not met for a long time—Mrs. Shen!

Suddenly, Shen Qi’s expression started alternating between different emotions as she stood rooted to the spot, staring at Mrs. Shen.

Didn’t she ask her to get out of the Shen family? Why was she here to look for her now?

Was she here to offer her apology because she felt bad about what she had done to her? Or, was it because she missed her as she had not been home for a long while?

At such thought, Shen Qi suddenly felt better deep down inside.

As she was pondering, the person turned around and her gaze just happened to meet Shen Qi’s.

Thereafter, Mrs. Shen started walking toward Shen Qi at a brisk pace with all smiles.

“Yan, I bumped into an acquaintance. You may head inside first.” Shen Qi handed the bag to Yan and asked for her help to bring it in before Mrs. Shen got close to her. Noticing that something was not right, Yan left at once.

Soon, Mrs. Shen reached Shen Qi with a wide grin on her face.

“Qi, you indeed are working here. The guards are not letting me in.”

Shen Qi’s throat was so dry that she could not say a thing; she only stared back at her dazedly.

Feeling guilty under her gaze, Mrs. Shen averted her eyes instinctively and cleared her throat before saying, “Hmm… let’s go to a place where we can sit down and talk.”

They went to a cafe nearby.

As the area was a premium location for commercial buildings and it was also near to the top company in North City—Ye Group, even cafes here were exceptionally high-end and luxurious. Because it was the first time Mrs. Shen stepped foot in such a cafe, she could not help but feel impressed by the cool air flowing out from the air-conditioning and the feel of the leather sofa when she sat in it.

“Is this the life of the affluents?”

Shen Qi did not answer her; she only took a deep breath before taking a sip of her coffee.

She hoped that it would soothe her dry and croaky throat.

After a short while, Mrs. Shen continued, “Qi, I can see you’re having an enjoyable life now. Do you come to cafes like this for coffee every day?

This time, as she felt her mother’s genuine concern for her, Shen Qi suddenly became emotional.

Yet, before she could even express these emotions, Mrs. Shen cast her a restless glance before saying softly, “I thought I had ruined your life by marrying you into the Ye family. Little did I know that you would actually manage to make the best out of it. Qi, can you please give me some money?”

The sentiments which had just washed over Shen Qi immediately died down as she stared at the lady in front of her dazedly.

Mrs. Shen cleared her throat before adding, “I plan to transfer your sister to a better school so that she will be able to learn more things, but we can’t afford it. So, I hope you can…”

“So this is the purpose of your visit today?” Finally, Shen Qi opened her mouth but her voice was extremely raucous and her tone was slightly shaky.

“Qi, please don’t blame me for saying this. To be honest, you’re already leading a comfortable life right now. Isn’t it great if everyone can share the comfort you’re having? Your marriage was supposed to your sister’s marriage, and whatever benefits you’re having now originally belonged to her. But right now, you’re enjoying it instead. Since you already have such a fine marriage, why can’t you offer some help to your sister?”

Worried that Shen Qi would reject her request, Mrs. Shen began an endless nag.

“I just thought… that you were here to see me because I’ve been away from home for so long…” muttered Shen Qi as her eyes became red-rimmed. “Do you think I’m really happy to have married into the Ye family? “Ye family, the richest family in North City.” Shen Qi let out a soft chuckle before continuing with her tone brimming with self-mockery, “It’s indeed the richest family. But if they were so excellent, why did you ask me to take my sister’s place in the marriage previously?”

As she was speaking, Shen Qi stared at her mother unflinchingly. “Would you be able to tell me why you didn’t want Shen Yue to marry into the Ye family if they were really so perfect?”

Mrs. Shen went speechless at once as she stared back at her awkwardly.

“Qi, I don’t mean it that way. I really didn’t consider the issue so thoroughly back then. If you blame me for that, I can offer you an apology. But…”
