However, Tang Yuanyuan did not say a single word and kept crying.

Seeing how she was sobbing, Mrs. Tang became lost for words and decided that it would be best if she said nothing at all. So, Mrs. Tang sat patiently as she listened and waited quietly by her side until Tang Yuanyuan had grown tired from crying. Mrs. Tang then gently wiped away her tears as she softly asked, “Are you hungry? Should I let the kitchen staff prepare something for you to eat?”

Tang Yuanyuan shook her head and placed her cheeks on Mrs. Tang. “I’m not hungry; I don’t feel like eating too.” Tang Yuanyuan had no appetite at all and just the mention of food made her nauseous.

“How about some soup? You can’t possibly starve yourself at this point,” Mrs. Tang asked her again. But Tang Yuanyuan still did not have the appetite to eat at all, and said in a dejected voice, “I would like to sleep.”

“Then, you should take a bath first before you sleep,” Mrs. Tang suggested. Tang Yuanyuan’s body had been reeking of an unpleasant smell, but she refused to take a bath since she did not have the strength to do so. She then fell onto her bed, hugged her pillow, and turned around. Not long after, she fell into a deep sleep.

It pained Mrs. Tang to see her daughter acting this way but she did not have another choice. All she could do was ask the kitchen staff to prepare some food. Mrs. Tang had also asked for the bathtub to be filled with warm water and changed it every now and then when the water had cooled down so that when Tang Yuanyuan woke up, she could use it right away.

Unfortunately, Tang Yuanyuan slept through the entire night. Mrs. Tang had stayed up all night to accompany her as she was afraid that something would happen to her daughter once she left her side.

When Tang Yuanyuan woke up, a sense of guilt instantly gushed in as she noticed her mom staying by her bed.

“Mom,” Tang Yuanyuan called out.

Upon hearing her voice, Mrs. Tang shot up immediately and asked, “Yuanyuan, are you awake? Are you okay? Are you hungry? Do you want something to eat?”

Initially, Tang Yuanyuan did not feel like eating at all. However, looking at how worried her mom was, she could not help but nod her head and said, “Yes, I’m hungry. I’d like to have some congee.”

“Alright, I’ll have the kitchen staff prepare it for you immediately.”

Before the kitchen staff went to prepare her some congee, Tang Yuanyuan had gone into the bathroom to take a bath. Her eyes instantly welled up as soon as she noticed the hot water in her bathtub. The night had already passed, yet the water remained hot. This meant that for the whole night, her mom had someone constantly replace the water in case she wanted to take a bath.

Previously, Tang Yuanyuan felt like her world was falling apart when she thought Yuchi Yishu did not like her. But now, she felt like she had given up too easily.

It doesn’t matter if he likes me or not. If he doesn’t like me, then I won’t like him back either. Why should I let my world fall apart just because of this? She really should not have let herself fall apart so easily. Her acts were simply too disgraceful. Since Tang Yuanyuan was almost a grown-up, she thought she should learn to keep her emotions in check. With this thought in mind, Tang Yuanyuan carefully washed up.

After she finished her bath, her emotions took a turn too.

Just as she exited the bathroom, Mrs. Tang was already outside waiting for her. “Finally, you’ve taken a bath. You must be starving now. Here, the congee is ready. There’s sweet congee, and even plain congee, so which one would you like to eat?”

“Alright then.” At this moment, Mrs. Tang did not dare to meddle with her daughter’s affairs. “You can do whatever you want.”

Tang Yuanyuan did not mention the incident from the previous night again. Mrs. Tang, too, kept silent, since it had something to do with her daughter’s broken heart. After Mrs. Tang left, Tang Yuanyuan resisted her continuous urge to cry as she ran into the bathroom and puked out everything she had eaten just now. In the end, her tears followed suit and fell after she had puked; she was still having a difficult time.

She leaned into the mirror and thought for a while before she washed her face. Tang Yuanyuan looked at herself in the mirror and comforted herself, “You need to pull yourself together, Yuanyuan. It’s okay if he doesn’t like you. You still have your parents and friends.” After cheering herself on, she looked in the mirror and smiled.

The next day, Tang Yuanyuan attended school as usual.

Other than her swollen eyes, Tang Yuanyuan looked normal. Meng Kefei did not know what had happened to her, but being the best friend that she was, Meng Kefei did notice something was wrong with Tang Yuanyuan and asked, “What’s wrong? Your eyes look swollen. Did something happen?”

The events that had unfolded during the weekend were depressing and embarrassing. It was reasonable to say that she was rejected. However, the fact that she was subtly rejected even when she had said nothing made it even worse.

Witnessing all these, Meng Kefei could no longer bear it any longer so she asked Tang Yuanyuan, “What really happened? Aren’t we best friends? Why won’t you tell me anything?”

Tang Yuanyuan could only force a smile at her. “It’s really nothing, Fei. Don’t worry about me. I’m just feeling unwell; that’s all.”

“Feeling unwell?” Meng Kefei was in disbelief. “If you’re just feeling unwell, why won’t you see a doctor since you’ve been like this for a while?”

“I don’t feel like going,” Tang Yuanyuan timidly replied.

“Is it because you don’t feel like going, or you’re actually not feeling unwell at all?” Upon hearing this, Tang Yuanyuan lifted her head and looked at Meng Kefei. She was unsure if she was delusional, but she felt like Fei was a little aggressive at the moment.

“What’s the matter, Fei?”

Meng Kefei realized that her attitude was a little harsh after being questioned by Tang Yuanyuan. Immediately, she returned to her calm state. “I’m fine, but please don’t blame me. These days I’ve only seen you being upset, so I was hoping you could share your problems with me. I might be able to give you guidance. Just look at your current self. On that day, Tang Yuanyuan had thought that the passenger seat was for Zhong Chufeng, but to her dismay, it was reserved for that girl. What more was there to say?

Meng Kefei’s heart was palpitating vigorously. She thought she had a chance with Yishu, but it looked like everyone had lost their chance unexpectedly.

“Don’t worry, Yuanyuan.” Meng Kefei gently patted Tang Yuanyuan’s back. Her voice sounded a little choked up. She was unsure of whether she was comforting Tang Yuanyuan or herself as she continued, “If he has a girlfriend, then let him be. There are so many outstanding boys in our school. When the time comes, you can pick the person of your choice.”

Tang Yuanyuan noticed how Meng Kefei’s emotional responses were a little inappropriate but soon brushed it off. “Don’t worry. I have been keeping my thoughts open these days. I just feel a little depressed, but I should be fine after some time.”

“That’s good to hear.”

At night, when Tang Yuanyuan was about to return to her dormitory, she saw Zhong Chufeng standing at the back door just as she turned her head around. Her expression changed slightly. As if she had not seen him, she changed her direction halfway through and went straight ahead.

Zhong Chufeng narrowed his eyes as he looked up and down at the young lady who seemed to have lost a lot of weight. Tang Yuanyuan had really shed off a lot of weight. This made her eyes noticeably larger than before, but the spark in her eyes was gone. Most importantly, this innocent girl had learned how to put on an act in front of him; she was no longer straightforward like before. She even knew how to lie in front of him now.

Zhong Chufeng folded his arms and questioned, “Did you really not see me or did you choose to ignore me? Do you really hate me that much, little girl?” Upon finishing his sentence, he reached out to pinch Tang Yuanyuan’s cheeks. With this, Zhong Chufeng noticed that there was not much flesh between his fingers anymore. He got worried for a moment and withdrew his hand. “Alright. It doesn’t matter if you had or had not seen me just now. Just come with me.”

Tang Yuanyuan followed Zhong Chufeng to a more secluded area and stood still. Noticing that she did not catch up to him, he turned around and asked, “Why aren’t you coming?”

“Chufeng, is there something important? If there isn’t, I need to go back to study. My teachers have assigned us a lot of homework today. I’m afraid if I can’t finish it, I’ll have to stay up late to complete it.” Upon hearing her words, Zhong Chufeng walked over to her side. “Really? How about I help you finish your homework?”

Tang Yuanyuan was suspicious of this offer. “Hmm?”

“What’s wrong? You’re unwilling to let me do so? I’ve only spoken a few words with you and now you’re trying to hide from me? How long has it been? Didn’t I explain it to you clearly last time?”

There’s no one else; it’s just the two of us.” Although Zhong Chufeng did not mention Yishu’s name, he had made it clear to Tang Yuanyuan that Yishu would not be joining them, so that she could relax.

After his assurance, Tang Yuanyuan blinked with her bright eyes as she felt relieved. “Where are we going?”

Zhong Chufeng beamed, “You’ll know when we get there.”

Later, Zhong Chufeng brought Tang Yuanyuan to an amusement arcade—to play video games, challenge a Parkour course, and so on. This made Tang Yuanyuan sweat profusely while she left all her sorrows behind.

Zhong Chufeng bought ice cream for her when he sent her back to school. “I know you’re trying to lose weight, but it’s just for this once. After today, you can live however you want. You can be willful just for today. When you’re in a bad mood, eating something sweet will help you get better.”

Tang Yuanyuan did not refuse his offer and took the ice cream. She licked it a few times and said, “Thank you, Chufeng.”

The night-wind was chilly when Zhong Chufeng sent Tang Yuanyuan back to her school entrance. “Okay then; I won’t follow you in. I’ll just stay here and see you off.”

Tang Yuanyuan shook her head. “I’ll see you off.”

Zhong Chufeng was glad when he heard this. Initially, he had wanted to refuse her because he was afraid that it would be dangerous for her. However, after he saw the security guard standing by the side, he felt at ease and replied, “Okay.”

“Goodbye, Chufeng.” Tang Yuanyuan waited for Zhong Chufeng to walk far away and waved gently at his back. The smile on her face faded as she turned around and prepared to enter her school.

A familiar voice could suddenly be heard, stopping Tang Yuanyuan in her tracks.

She could not believe her ears and thought it might be an illusion. Otherwise, how could she have heard Yishu’s voice at this hour?

After pausing for a while, she did not hear any more voices. Tang Yuanyuan then laughed miserably in her heart. It really was an illusion.

She took a step out and continued to walk toward her dormitory. Soon after, a slender figure obstructed her way. Tang Yuanyuan raised her head in astonishment. From what she saw, it was the handsome silhouette of Yuchi Yishu.

Yishu? Is it really him? Tang Yuanyuan fell into a trance and could hardly differentiate reality from her dreams. Was it really her illusion? Why would Yishu be here?

“I’ve been looking for you for so long. Now that I’m in front of you, you’re still not going to look at me?” Yuchi Yishu’s voice sounded a little exhausted and his voice was a little hoarse. He was short of breath as he walked toward her.

Tang Yuanyuan subconsciously took a step back. “Yishu?”

Yuchi Yishu took a deep breath and looked at her helplessly. “You’re still able to recognize me? Since you’re able to recognize me, then why didn’t you want to meet up with me for so long?”

As to the reason why she was unwilling to meet him, it could not be said out loud. But now that he was already standing in front of her, Tang Yuanyuan had to, at the very least, say something. However, she did not know what to say since she was never the one to put on a good face.

After thinking for some time, Tang Yuanyuan could only clumsily answer, “It’s not that I’m unwilling to meet you, it’s just that I’m too busy with my studies these days.”

“Busy?” Yuchi Yishu chuckled. “But you weren’t busy when you went out with Chufeng?”

Tang Yuanyuan was speechless.

Seeing how she did not speak, Yuchi Yishu took another step forward.

As soon as she saw him moving forward, Tang Yuanyuan took another step back. She even turned around and had her back facing Yuchi Yishu. “It’s not that I’m not busy, it’s just that after going out with Chufeng, I don’t have much time left. I was really busy for the past few days, and I just happened to be free today.” Tang Yuanyuan sighed in relief after she anxiously explained to him. She thought that her reply was quite smart. Yuchi Yishu should not be able to find any mistakes with it.

“Then will you be free tomorrow?” Yuchi Yishu asked.

Tang Yuanyuan was stunned and answered, “I have to study tomorrow. So no, I’m not free.”

“What about the day after tomorrow?”

What is he trying to do? Tang Yuanyuan pursed her lips and answered, “I’m not free too.”

After she had said this, there was no response from behind for a good while. Tang Yuanyuan bit her lower lip as she began regretting. Were her words too harsh? After all, liking him was her own business and Yishu was clueless about it. Besides, it wasn’t wrong for her to like him. So, why should she put all the blame on him?

Just as Tang Yuanyuan was thinking about this, a deep sigh came from behind.

“You’re not as obedient as before.”

Tang Yuanyuan was puzzled; how was she not obedient?

Then, her shoulders were being held onto and she was being pulled around Yuchi Yishu to face him. It was summer, and her clothes were not thick. Tang Yuanyuan could clearly feel the heat from the palm of his hands transmitting to her body through her thin clothes. “You would never lie to me before this.”

Lie? Tang Yuanyuan looked up and met with Yuchi Yishu’s intense eyes. His eyes narrowed slightly as if he could see through her heart.

She then subconsciously avoided his gaze. “I’m not lying. I really need to study.” With this, Tang Yuanyuan wanted to break free from his grasp. However, she found Yuchi Yishu’s hands firmly gripping her shoulders and she could not break free at all. “Yishu?”

“Yuanyuan, can we talk?”

About what? Tang Yuanyuan was reminded of her embarrassing actions that day, so she awkwardly bit her lower lip, shook her head, and refused, “What is there to talk about? Please let go of me, Yishu. It’s getting late. If I don’t return to school now, Fei and the others from the dormitory will worry about me.”

Upon hearing this, Yuchi Yishu looked in the direction of her school entrance and helplessly said, “It really is getting late. Next time, don’t be out too late with Chufeng.”

Tang Yuanyuan subconsciously rebelled against him. “Yishu, I’m almost a grown-up now. I can make my own decisions about my own matters. Besides, I may have called you my brother, but… you’re not even my real brother.” What she meant was, Yishu was not her biological brother and that he did not have the right to meddle with her affairs.

After hearing this, Yuchi Yishu’s heart sank. However, he understood her feelings given how she had been facing many problems these days. “I may not be your real brother, but I grew up together with you. Surely, I must mean more to you than Chufeng, right?”

Tang Yuanyuan could not answer. Yuchi Yishu then sighed and rubbed her head gently. “We’ll talk tomorrow?”

Tang Yuanyuan remained silent.

“If you don’t answer me, I might follow Chufeng’s idea and find you straight away in your class. Or, would you prefer me to look for you at your dormitory?”

Hearing this, Tang Yuanyuan raised her head in shock as she looked at him with disbelief.

“So?” Yuchi Yishu stared carefully at the young lady’s eyes. His comforting voice coaxed her, “Choose one?”

Tang Yuanyuan lowered her eyes dejectedly. “We’ll talk tomorrow then.”

“Okay. I’ll meet you after school at the school entrance.” After getting her promise, Yuchi Yishu did not trouble her anymore. He let go of her and rubbed her head. “Go in now. Remember to rest early.”

Tang Yuanyuan sprinted toward her dormitory and rushed up the stairs. Upon entering her room, she immediately entered the bathroom. As though her emotions were having a rollercoaster ride, she looked at herself in the mirror. She felt like her expressions had exposed everything.

If she could, she did not want to meet Yuchi Yishu anymore.

That day, she had vomited after drinking milk tea and pretended to sleep in the bathroom. She even pretended to sleep all the way and it was very humiliating for her. However, something that was even more humiliating than that incident, was Tang Yuanyuan’s feelings for him.

Tang Yuanyuan reached out to poke her face in the mirror and chuckled. “With this face of yours, what makes you think you have the right to be liked? Both of you grew up together. If he likes you, he would have fallen for you a long time ago.”

If we’re going to talk tomorrow, what am I going to say?

What should she say if Yishu asked about her thoughts? Should she deny it, or should she directly admit it? What should she say after admitting? Should she tell him that she had thought through it and then wish him and that beautiful girl a long-lasting relationship? Would saying these make her seem magnanimous?

No. Tang Yuanyuan felt that she could not say it out loud. She just could not wish Yuchi Yishu and another girl a long-lasting relationship.

But what if she denied it? If she denied it, then how would she explain her behavior that day?

The next day, whenever the thought of Yuchi Yishu coming over to meet her popped up, it made Tang Yuanyuan extremely nervous. Throughout the entire day, she was inattentive toward most things and so, she spent the whole day in a tense state.

Seeing how she was being preoccupied with something, Meng Kefei became worried and queried, “What’s wrong? How many times have you spaced out today?”

Tang Yuanyuan shook her head. “No. It’s nothing.”

“Oh right, since you’re a little down these days, why not we go shopping after school? While we shop, I can buy some clothes too.” Faced with Meng Kefei’s invitation, Tang Yuanyuan would usually accept it right away. However, Tang Yuanyuan had already made a promise with Yishu today and she could not possibly break her promise again.

“I’m sorry, Fei. I have other things to attend to later, so I can’t accompany you to go shopping.”

“Other things?” Meng Kefei doubted this. “What kind of things?” Suddenly, she remembered that Chufeng had come by to look for Tang Yuanyuan yesterday. She then asked, “Is Chufeng coming over to find you again? Have you both already made an appointment with each other? If that’s the case, then you shouldn’t put him off. We can wait two more days until you’re free; then, we can go shopping.”

Since Meng Kefei had already put it this way, Tang Yuanyuan did not make any further explanations. She only nodded, “I’m sorry, Fei; I’ll accompany you in two days once I have this matter sorted out.”

“No worries. It’s because you were feeling down these days that I wanted to accompany you. Since you already have someone to accompany you, I’m relieved.” Afraid that Tang Yuanyuan would overthink, Meng Kefei reached out and pinched her cheeks. “I hope to see you become happy, so don’t worry too much and go ahead.”

“Thanks, Fei.”

When school had ended, Tang Yuanyuan slowly packed her things. She tried her best to delay by as much as she could.

After Meng Kefei had finished packing, she glanced over and saw that Tang Yuanyuan was still packing up slowly. “Aren’t you going to hurry up?”

Tang Yuanyuan softly replied, “I won’t be so quick, so you can go ahead first.”

“Alright.” Meng Kefei left the classroom after she was done packing. She had wanted to go directly to the library but was suddenly reminded of the ink of her ballpoint pen which had dried up yesterday. Hence, she took a turn and went toward the school entrance; she wanted to buy some at the bookstore.

When she arrived at the school entrance, she noticed a group of girls had gathered to see something. Meng Kefei was confused. What’s happening over there?

“Oh my goodness, he’s so handsome! Who is he?”

“Why is he waiting at our school entrance? Did he come here to pick up his girlfriend?”

“Oh my god! To have such a handsome boyfriend; I’m so envious of her.”

A group of girls was cupping their own cheeks as they looked toward a direction and were softly discussing amongst themselves.

Meng Kefei felt a little surprised, but she did not want to join in. However, in order to exit from the school entrance, she would have to pass through them. In the end, she had no choice but to helplessly walk through them, apologizing along the way. “I’m sorry. Excuse me; passing through.”

Finally, when she managed to squeeze through, Meng Kefei sighed in relief. When she was prepared to visit the bookstore, she noticed a familiar silhouette standing by the school entrance. The tall and thin young man was leaning against the wall. His clothes were simple and casual-looking; he was looking at the floor. He gave off a sluggish yet cold-hearted feeling; his entire body exuded an aura that was telling everyone to stay away from him.

Yuchi Yishu! Meng Kefei’s heart fluttered. After so many days, she did not expect to see him again. He was still so handsome that she could not move her eyes away from him. But, why was he here?

In response to her words, there was a brief moment of silence. When Tang Yuanyuan glanced at Yuchi Yishu, she noticed him staring at her carefully while he pursed his lips.

“If you don’t say a word, I’ll assume your silence means consent.” After saying this, Tang Yuanyuan carried her school bag and turned around to run away. However, after marching a few steps, she noticed that she could not move forward anymore. Tang Yuanyuan turned her head around, only to find Yuchi Yishu had reached out and grabbed the strap of her schoolbag.

Yuchi Yishu gave out a heavy sigh. “I called you out to talk. So how are we to continue talking if you’re always in a hurry to run away?”

Yuchi Yishu’s eyes twinkled with mischief and his tone of voice was doting. “But you said you didn’t take it?”

For a moment, Tang Yuanyuan felt like she was being completely exposed in front of him. She felt like he had seen through everything. When she woke up the next day, the room was empty. She got up and checked Meng Kefei’s bed, then she found that the blankets and everything else was neatly folded. It was obvious that Meng Kefei had already left. Rubbing her eyes, she wondered, Did I oversleep?

Getting out of bed, Tang Yuanyuan prepared to go and wash up in the bathroom. Coincidentally, she ran into Yuan Yuehan, who was coming out from inside. “Let’s go.” He pulled her in the direction of the shop. When they entered the shop, she realized that it was a grilled fish restaurant.

She suddenly regretted agreeing to his suggestion so casually. No matter what they ate, anything would be better than fish.
