Chapter 151: Chapter 151 – Heartbreak Fund

Violet almost believed it was before she remembered he was Alex’s best friend. As such, Aiden would always be around.

"Goodbye, Aiden," she said, breaking his last shred of hope. With a forced smile, Aiden turned around and never looked back again, though he hoped that Violet would have a change of mind and call him back.

Dialing Alex’s number, his message was short. "Alex, this is goodbye. I will keep you updated on the events of New Orleans."

Alex was strangely saddened. After receiving the video, he felt that it was over and Aiden’s words proved it.

"Take good care of yourself out there, my dear friend." He had wanted to inform Joanna but felt it wrong for them to control Violet’s life.

If Bennet made her happy, then who were they to stand in her way? Violet returned to the restaurant, seeing a relief sigh on Bennet’s face.

Oh, how she wished she could tear it off, especially when she had to fake being nice the whole time.

If only she could be herself around him at this time, how she was with Aiden but things were different with Bennet.

She needed something from him and as such, she had to continue with the pretense.

"So, will you marry me?" Bennet asked once again, Violet looked eagerly at the people in the restaurant.

"Of course, I will but there are a few things we have to set straight."

A crisp frown lifted the corner of Bennet’s lips as she asked after rising from the floor. The ring was still on his finger.

Violet sat and beckoned him to take the seat in front of her, onlookers were filled with disappointment to not have seen the happy final moment.

"What are you talking about?" Bennet asked, Violet smiled at him and asked seriously. "Do you love me?"

"Of course. How could I beg you to marry me if I don’t love you?" He sounded so helpless, Violet would have believed him if she hadn’t been in contact with Sadie.

"Well, I’ve had a lot of men tell me the same thing but, in the end, they break my heart," Violet pointed out, Bennet was slightly relieved.

For a moment, he thought it was going to be something serious but he figured that all Violet needed was the assurance that he was not going to break her heart.

"I will never break your heart, V."

Violet forced a smile and stared seriously at him. "That’s what they always say."

"So how do you want me to prove it?" He asked eagerly, Violet smiled profoundly. This was the part she was waiting for and it dropped like a bomb.

"Well, I was thinking that we open a Heartbreak Fund, if you know what I mean."

"What is a Heartbreak Fund?" Bennet asked with a confused expression, Violet explained.

"A Heartbreak Fund is a fund set up in case of heartbreak. What is expected is that we both deposit fifty percent of our investments plus savings into this account."

Bennet was thinking through the suggestion and was glad she mentioned both of them, which meant it just wasn’t going to be his money.

This was interesting, making him believe that Violet indeed wanted them to have a great future together.

"So, you want us to have a joint account where we both deposit half of our savings and what do we do with it?" He asked, ready to comply if that would encourage her to accept his proposal.

"Well, in case you break my heart in the course of the marriage, everything in the Heartbreak Fund would be mine together with fifty percent of all we make together after the marriage and vice versa."

A smirk lifted the corner of Bennet’s lips. He had no intention of leaving her, especially when she belonged to a very wealthy family. He was certain that her contribution to the Heartbreak Fund or whatever she called it would be even more than his because her family was richer.

"If that would make you marry me, then I will make the deposit seventy percent and if I do anything to break your heart, then you can have all that belongs to me, even if we aren’t married yet."

Violet smiled profoundly, and typed a few things on her phone. They were changes she was making on the document to bind them together.

"In that case, sign the document I sent to your email."

Bennet removed his phone and without hesitation, signed the electronic document. A few minutes later, the completed document was sent to both of them.

"The document is signed so you can’t refuse to marry me," he said proudly, Violet embraced him and kissed him on the lips.

"Since you have proven to take good care of my heart, let’s get married first thing tomorrow morning."

Bennet froze instantly. He still needed time to finalize the divorce and if he showed the least sign that he was still married, then he would lose everything with a blink of an eye.

He began to think if had just been tricked but tricked. Nervously, he replied.

"Why the rush? Our wedding must be big so give it three weeks," he said seriously, Violet smiled.

"In that case, no sex before marriage," she shrugged, Bennet’s teeth gritted together.

He couldn’t afford to push her too hard and had to accept the obvious. After all, the divorce would take place in barely a week.

Until then, that idiotic woman could continue to service him. "Alright. I will begin working on the marriage so we have to arrange for both our parents to meet by next week," he said, Violet smiled profoundly.

"Sure, and remain a good boy."

That night, Violet could not keep her excitement to herself and rushed to Joanna’s house, bumping into Alex at the entrance.

"Violet, you look excited," Alex said with a forced smile, guessing it was because of her marriage proposal.

Violet was not ready to answer to Alex and looked around curiously, Alex decided to save her the stress.

"Joanna is upstairs. I will get her for you." He went to get Joanna, who was excited at the mention of Violet.

Even as he excused himself, he had a feeling the conversation involved Violet’s relationship and spied on them through the CCTV.

After learning the truth that everything Violet was doing was to save a girl, Alex dialed Aiden’s number.

"Aiden, I have good news. Violet is not who you think she is."

Aiden was glad to hear something positive from the other end of the line but his response broke Alex’s heart.

Chapter 152: Chapter 152 – You are the only woman in my life

"Alex, I’m so happy she proved me wrong, but I realized that she deserves someone better than me. All I want is to grant her wish of not seeing me again," Aiden said seriously from the end of the line. Alex was saddened but respected his decision.

"If that is the case, I wish you all the best."

At the end of the line, Aiden smiled. "I know she won’t ask about me, but if she does, tell her that I granted her wish of not seeing me again."

Alex felt the message might hurt Violet but was certain that due to all that had transpired between them, Violet would not ask about Aiden.

He allowed Joanna to spend the night in the same room with Violet, which gave him the chance to tackle issues concerning Salvadore. He even left the house for a week and returned the night of Bennette’s divorce date, afraid that Bennet might turn violent.

As such, Alex had to be there since Joanna wanted to support Violet. They arrived early and waited until it was their turn after Bennette and a frail woman got down from his car.

"Let’s wait until it’s their turn," Alex cautioned Joanna and Violet. The two women stayed back until around thirty minutes before they proceeded to the divorce court after Violet received a text message. ’It’s done.’

At the entrance of the divorce court, Violet, Joanna, and Alex cornered Bennet. The look in his eyes at the sight of Violet was priceless, though the latter pretended to be clueless about what was happening.

"Bennet, what are you doing here?" She stared at the woman beside him, recognizing her as Sadie. "And who is she?"

Sadie must have put on layers and layers of makeup because she looked better than in the pictures. However, fear registered in her eyes when she locked gazes with Bennet, instantly lowering her gaze.

"This is my sister, Sadie. She came to get a divorce, but the asshole of a groom did not turn up," Bennet said smoothly. Violet smiled as she caught a glimpse of the document in Sadie’s hand and snatched it.

"How interesting that her husband has the same name as you and also looks like you? Must be your twin brother, I guess," Violet taunted. Bennet was nervous.

Things were not supposed to turn out like this because from the look of it, he might just lose everything if he gathered the courage to confess his divorce.

With him being mute, Violet smiled at Sadie, knowing the girl would not recognize her.

"I’m Violet. How about you?"

The name Violet caused a light to flash in Sadie’s eyes. When everything was finalized without her seeing Violet, she thought that everything was lost and Violet had given up on her.

It turns out that was not the case. "I’m Sadie."

"It’s stated that you married and divorced Benne..." Before she could complete the sentence, Bennet cut in. "I have to take her to her parents."

Violet stared at him for five seconds and unexpectedly, a slap was sent his way. He staggered and glared at her.

"What is that for?" If not for Alex’s imposing presence, Bennet was sure to have returned the slap because of how painful it was. But when Violet began to speak, he realized what a fool he had been.

"You’ve been married for years and yet, you hid it from me."

"I’m not..." he was about to deny it, but this time, the slap was from Alex. Bennet toppled over and fell harshly, his face down.

A relief sigh escaped Sadie for the fact that she was not the one at the receiving end of the beatings this time around.

"What the fuck! What did I do to you?" Bennet complained, slowly rising to his feet.

"You were married and yet, kept it from me. You constantly abused the poor woman and raped her as you liked, true or false?"

Bennet stared at Sadie, his gaze dark, but then confusion masked his anger. How on earth could Sadie have come into contact with Violet? It was impossible.

"Look, you are mistaking. You are the only woman in my life." Another slap met his cheek, turning it red like tomatoes.

Thanks to Alex, he already had a black eye to complement the slaps.

"You are still lying to me, but you just wait until I get her a lawyer. Tell me, how much did you pay her for alimony?" Violet asked, Bennett felt like he was caught in a trap with no way of escape.

Passersby stared strangely at him before leaving to wherever they were headed.

"I’m sorry I lied to you, but I paid her very well in alimony. I gave her half a million, a two-bedroom house, and a car. Isn’t it enough?"

Violet was taken aback by the revelation and stared at Sadie, but the latter shook her head. "It’s not true."

Knowing that he might lose everything, Bennet acted fast. "You idiotic woman. Have you checked your bank account?"

Just as Sadie fished for her phone, Bennet made the transfer. "I just saw the alert. I didn’t know of it before," Sadie said honestly. Violet smiled. This was easier than she thought.

"You mentioned a car and house, so where are they?" She sent a text message on her phone, and the lawyer she prepared beforehand arrived. "My lawyer would confirm if everything has indeed been transferred to your ex-wife."

Bennet was scratching his head nervously. Perhaps he should have stuck to his low-life wife, rather than the high-class woman he wanted to marry who knew her rights.

That was how he transferred one of his cars and a house to his ex-wife after giving her the money.

"I hope you won’t come for everything later. I can take care of myself. No need to accompany me," Sadie said, eager to leave, but Violet stopped her.

"Don’t worry. I will pay a bodyguard to protect you, but here. Your ex-husband has some money in our joint account, and it’s all yours now.

"No way," Bennet raged, his eyes red. That money was his last hope and the reason why he freely transferred everything to Sadie. But now, it was as if Violet was trying to scam him.

Chapter 153: Chapter 153 – I never intended to marry you

Violet smiled imperceptibly. Men like this were an eyesore to her. "You think you can mistreat my fellow woman and have me applaud your stupidity?"

"What are you talking about?" Bennet asked, helpless and confused as Violet revealed,

"I never intended to marry you. I only had you deposit that money to give to your wife, and I’m going to make her press charges for rape and assault."

Bennet’s hopes died as shock spiraled through him. Everything was perfect before but was suddenly turning against him.

One thing was clear. Violet had been in touch with Sadie, and hence the strange behaviors she was putting up, but how was that possible? He couldn’t imagine it.

"You mean you knew it all along?" Something broke inside of him, but Violet smiled and spoke in a warning tone.

"Next time you have a woman, treat her right, and you won’t lose everything." After that, she left him with the lawyer and bodyguard she contracted for Sadie.

Almost reaching the car, Sadie caught up to her. "You are one of a kind, and I will never forget what you have done for me."

She knew that a woman like Violet was rare and somehow, she wished to be like her but lacked the words and courage to express it.

Violet smiled at her, patting her lovingly on the shoulder. "Be strong and learn to stand up for yourself. I hope you will be able to do something meaningful with your life from all that you have earned and learned so far."

Sadie was nodding eagerly. This was her only chance to change her life completely. "Yes. I will pick my life back up again," she said seriously when Violet remembered and requested her bank account number.

After transferring the money, Sadie was left dumbfounded. "I’ve never seen so much money in my life."

Violet froze at her words and advised her seriously. "If you need a financial adviser, I can get you one, but don’t you dare waste this money, do you understand?"

Sadie nodded helplessly and asked her. "Can’t you be my financial advisor? I can pay you." The only person she could trust at the moment was Violet, and hence her fears.

Violet was honest with her. "I have financial advisors too."

In other words, she wasn’t one and also relied on somebody else, but Sadie was still grateful for everything she had done for her.

"Thank you very much. For the first time in a long time, I will sleep with my eyes closed."

Sorrow flashed in Violet’s eyes, but she blinked, and it was gone. "Stay strong and make the right decisions in the future."

After everything was over, Violet sat in the back seat with Joanna, feeling depressed.

"Why am I so unlucky with men?" She asked out of the blue as Alex stepped on the accelerator, and Joanna felt lost.

In a sense, the only jerk she ever dated was Logan, and he was equally Violet’s ex, so indeed, the girl had met a lot of assholes.

"Some people only meet the wrong people before meeting the right ones," Joanna encouraged her, but Violet shook her head. Her destiny seemed to be set in stone, and she was not sure she could trust any other man.

"I owe Aiden a drink. Alex, can you call him, please?" It was funny how they never exchanged contact, but indeed, Aiden’s revelation had saved her from the mistake of her life.

However, she was saddened by Alex’s response. "If you must, I can give you Aiden’s number, but he’s taking care of business in New Orleans."

It was just a few hours’ flight time, but Violet felt like Aiden was so far away and somehow felt it was because of her due to his last words.

"Do you want his number?" Alex asked, knowing that Aiden wouldn’t mind, but Violet shook her head. She had seen a lot of assholes, and perhaps, connecting with Aiden again might cause her more hurt.

"No. Just thank him for me. For the information, I mean."

Alex smiled bitterly, not understanding why both Violet and Aiden were so stubborn. It was clear how they both felt attracted to each other, but it was understandable how they wanted to be away from each other.

Aiden had done a lot of horrible things because of jealousy, making it hard to make it up to Violet.

"So, are you going to explore anymore?" Joanna asked teasingly, trying to loosen the tensed atmosphere, but Violet smiled bitterly.

"I’m so tired of men. I’ve been able to live without sex for almost a month. Let’s see how far I can go with it. No more one-night stands, and no more men. It’s just me now, so let me see how far this shit would take me."

Joanna liked the new comeback and encouraged her. "If you want to go out or anything, I’m always around. Alex is always busy, though, and you already know this marriage is fake."

At the driver seat, Alex stiffened slightly, but it was the truth. After dropping both women at their offices, he went back to his and informed Aiden about the turnout of events.

It made Aiden happy that Violet wasn’t married, but when asked the question. "Will you try again?" He was saddened, feeling like he already blew his chances.

"No. It’s better this way. I never should have gotten emotionally attached, and I might just mess up her life once again. I hope that she finds a better person deserving of her."

Sometimes in life, to love means putting the other party’s happiness first, even if it means letting them go. That was exactly how Aiden was feeling.

A month passed like the wind, and Joanna never heard from her father. She visited her mother with Alex a couple of times and the woman was very happy.

Both companies were thriving and though knowing it was because of Alex, Joan was still happy because she chose him and not the other way around.

Alex had come to pick her up from the office like always, but Joanna saw that something bothered him. "You don’t look alright."

Alex stared at her, not knowing how to divulge the information.

Chapter 154: Chapter 154 - Do you feel anything for me?

"Angel, there are some things I need to take care of in New Orleans, and I don’t know when I will be back," Alex said seriously, leaving Joanna feeling empty. She had grown accustomed to sharing a bed with him and was comfortable with it, but now he was leaving for an indefinite period.

"What exactly are you going to take care of?" Joanna asked before realizing that she shouldn’t question him. The fact that he was kind enough to inform her should be sufficient.

"I can’t tell you the details," Alex said seriously, looking away as it involved Salvador’s men. Things were deteriorating by the day, and he needed to be there in person.

"Fine," Joanna said but did not say anything more. Alex knew she was upset but did not press her about it.

When they reached home, she even skipped dinner as the news had dampened her mood. They had only three months left to end the contract, but Alex was beginning to think that things had spiraled out of control.

"Angel, why are you upset?" He asked when they reached the bedroom. Usually, Joanna would be the one to shower first, so he waited for her to come out, but she did not respond to his question.

"Does it matter why I’m upset?" She asked in annoyance. Alex excused himself to go shower, and by the time he was done, she was already in her pajamas.

Ever since they started sharing a bed, she refrained from wearing anything revealing, and the pajamas covered her quite well.

"Let me shower first," Alex said and left, leaving Joanna greatly disturbed, knowing her emotions were spiraling out of control.

It was not supposed to be like this, but she found it hard to control her feelings, which was a significant problem.

"Per the contract," Alex was saying after the shower when Joanna cut him off. "Per the contract? Do you really not feel anything for me?"

Alex’s mind blurred. "I warned you to stick to the rules, Angel. Please don’t make things harder than they are."

Joanna felt bitter, but looking him in the eyes, she lost her composure. "So what if I fell in love with you? Do you not feel anything for me?"

Alex did not like this. Making himself comfortable on the bed, he pulled her close to his chest.

"Look, I can’t give you more than I promised."

Joanna could see in his eyes that the feeling was mutual, but she was saddened by how a man like him could deny it.

"That doesn’t answer my question. Do you feel anything for me?" She demanded, hoping she wasn’t alone in this love charade.

The truth stared Alex in the eyes, but he knew that admitting it would only worsen their situation. Staring back at her, he replied,

"I’m sorry, I don’t."

The words shattered Joanna. It wasn’t easy for her to make the move, sensing that he wouldn’t, but his outright denial made her see her contract husband as heartless.

A tear slid down her cheek, followed by the words, "Thank you for being honest with me."

His heart sank, knowing he wasn’t being honest. As Joanna was about to rise from the bed, he held her hand, causing her to lose her balance and fall safely into his arms.

"I know you are hurting, and I’m sorry. If I had my way, I would let the other woman go, but I just can’t."

Due to their time spent together, Joanna had forgotten about the existence of the other woman. If she could trade places with her, she would give up anything just to be with Alex.

"What if I compensate her? I can give her the company," Joanna said eagerly. Alex was stunned, and his eyes turned red and teary.

"You would give up everything for me?"

The only person he had ever tried to please was Dion, even sacrificing everything he felt for Joan.

"Isn’t that enough? She can have anything except you," Joanna pleaded, knowing she was being selfish by trying to buy another woman’s man, but she felt that a man like Alex was rare.

Whether he was crippled or capable, he had captured her heart in profound ways, and she feared she wouldn’t be able to get over him if they parted ways.

"I’m sorry, Joan. I wish I could do the same for you, but I already gave my word. Besides, you wouldn’t like me if you knew the real me," he said honestly.

Joanna loved his personality as Alex, but what if she found out about his life as Salvador? Alex was certain that whatever Joanna felt for him would change.

"The only person whose name strikes fear in my heart is Salvador, and you already said you are not him. Alex, what I feel for you can never change," she tried to convince him, but Alex had already made up his mind.

His suspicions were confirmed, and as much as they had something special, they would never be together.

However, the attraction between them due to their close proximity was too intense, and without permission, he pressed his lips to hers.

For some reason, Joanna welcomed him, though her condition for giving herself to him was if he would tell her he loved her.

She hadn’t heard those words from him, but her heart was already captured, and she knew she couldn’t live without him.

The kiss grew intense, Alex caressed her as if he would never let go, his kisses deep and passionate, and they both moaned into each other’s mouths.

But just as things heated up with Alex unbuttoning Joanna’s pajama shirt, his phone began ringing, and the ringtone indicated who it was.

Joanna felt uncomfortable with the interruption, deepening the kiss to divert his attention from the phone. However, as it continued to ring, Alex suddenly stopped.

"Please excuse me." As he picked up the phone, Joanna caught sight of the name. Dion.

Something inside her told her she was the other woman, and as Alex spoke on the phone, pain burned in her heart just by listening to how he addressed the other woman.

Chapter 155: Chapter 155 – You’ve been lying to me, so this is your last chance

"Alex, you jerk. You promised to come soon, and three months have already passed. Is it because I’ve been quiet? She’s here, so if you don’t get here sooner, I might just run away with her, and you will never see me again," Dion raged from the end of the line, making Alex nervous.

She had indeed been calm all this while, and he was making plans to go see her, but he never expected her to be so upset with him.

"Sweetheart, calm down," Alex tried to soothe her, but she refused to be comforted. Hearing that her savior appeared again, Alex felt the need to get there as soon as possible.

With Grandpa knowing that the whole marriage thing was a contract, Alex had nothing to worry about. But the fact that Salvador’s men could not locate this woman meant this was his only chance.

Then he remembered the cameras but could not check them here when Joanna was there. Also, it would be best for him to go there than spend time checking the cameras.

"I won’t calm down. You’ve been lying to me, so this is your last chance to keep your promise," Dion continued to rage. Alex felt helpless but assured her,

"I will be there before you know it. Don’t worry. I will stay for as long as you want."

As Alex was speaking, he was putting on his clothes, and before Joanna could say a word, he was gone. Not a word was said to her, whether good or bad.

He was ready to leave her for New Orleans, but the moment Dion or whatever called, he completely forgot about that and was ready to be by her side.

Not only that, but as he called Joanna Angel, which was rather friendly, he called his special woman sweetheart.

As Joanna connected the dots, she knew she had to get over whatever obsession she had for Alex.

Right now, she was in a one-sided love and didn’t want it to kill her one day. Not even a goodbye.

Alex arrived at Dion’s safe house, expecting to be yelled at, but to his amazement, the young woman flung herself over him. "You are here, finally."

Her warm tears caused Alex to shed a few himself. He missed her so much and yet had been away from her for so long.

"It’s alright. I’m here now." He pulled away and stared seriously at her. "How are you faring?"

Dion hugged him tighter, shedding more tears. "It’s better when you are here. I miss you so much."

Alex’s heart warmed tremendously as he relished the moment. "Don’t worry. Since you found your savior, we can finally be together again after the divorce."

"Divorce?" Dion pulled away and asked from shock. Alex forced a smile, swallowing the pain.

"Yeah, a promise is a promise. I secured everything for you. All I want is for you to get better to take over the Company."

Dion was homeschooled, so he knew she was capable, except for her mental instability. However, since her savior had appeared again, Alex was certain about her readiness.

"Take over the company?" Dion asked nervously. Alex smiled and pinched her teasingly on the cheek.

"Of course. Why did you think I had to get married so rapidly? Grandpa and Logan would all be happy to see you, and don’t worry. I will be there to train you all through," Alex assured her. Dion had tears in her eyes after being hit by the revelation.

"But I was mean to you. I didn’t trust you enough." All along, she thought Alex had forsaken her and fallen in love with that woman.

Alex was saddened by that part but still could not blame her. "You were just traumatized, so where is this woman you are talking about?"

Dion smiled and sipped a glass of water in front of her, but suddenly, she facepalmed and began screaming hysterically. "Dion, what is the matter?" Alex asked worriedly. Dion’s screams only worsened until he had to call in her doctor.

"What did you say to get her into this state?" the doctor asked after stabilizing Dion. Alex felt helpless, but neither could he reveal the part of the mysterious woman to the doctor.

"It’s the same thing that triggers her mental condition. I thought she was getting better?"

"Indeed, her condition had been stable, but has she received any visitors recently?" The doctor asked. Alex could only make do with what Dion had told him.

"She mentioned having someone here and was eager for me to see her."

"And who is this person, I suppose?" The doctor asked. Alex felt the information was needed to help with Dion’s condition and divulged.

"The one who saved her from the fire."

The doctor’s eyes lit up. "Then she should be here by Dion’s side."

Alex agreed and called the caregiver on duty, asking her, "Where is the woman?"

"Sleeping in the next room," the caregiver revealed. Alex was glad. Finally, he would get to meet this mysterious woman but then, sorrow settled in his heart at the thought of Joanna.

Why did it feel so hard to let her go? He knew that not only Joanna but him also, had broken the first rule, though he still tried to stick to his original plan.

"As soon as she wakes up, inform me, and you must not allow her to leave until I see her, do you understand?"

The caregiver nodded eagerly. "Yes, sir."

Dion was still sleeping even after the doctor left. Alex worked on his laptop, and a few times, he considered calling Joanna on the phone but felt ashamed due to how abruptly he left.

A respectable apology would be needed to make it up to her, but then, he wondered why Joanna had not contacted him in any way, meaning she must be upset.

He thought about sending her a text message, but once again, found it disrespectful to do so. He might just go back to apologize to her before leaving for New Orleans.

The thought of making it in time to New Orleans brought his attention to the fact that he had promised to stay by Dion’s side for as long as she wanted, and there was no way he would go against his promise to her.

"Sir, Miss Mabel is up. Should I let her in?" Dion’s caregiver asked. Alex prepped himself. So that was the name of Dion’s savior?

"No. I will meet her on the patio."
