“Father… I… I can’t be the king here.” I murmured, stunned, my voice barely above a whisper. My stepfather’s gaze sharpened on me.
“On what grounds will you refuse what is your responsibility?”

“I…” I paused, searching for the right words. “I think Hades deserves the throne more than I do. He is the true demon blood, the son of the king and queen, and…”
My voice trailed as the Demon King stared at me again. It was as if he could see through my words, knowing the reason for my refusal wasn’t about blood alone.
“Are
you worried about Xyrrha?” he asked, and I swallowed hard. “You needn’t be. She has changed. She isn’t as violent or possessive as she was years ago and you should forgive her for what he did. It’s already been five years and she was only acting on orders.” ᴛʜɪs ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ ɪs ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ʙʏ Fɪnd-Novel.net
“I have someone, Father.” I said quietly. His eyes widened in surprise.
“What? Who is she? A peasant?”
I shook my head, and he waited, but when no words followed, he walked to the table, coughing as if exhausted.
“If only your birth mother were still alive, I wouldn’t have to endure this pain. You must not leave this realm until we reach a decision,” he said again, coughing, then walked away, weariness in every step.
I stared at the spot he had just left and sighed. Gently, I turned toward the hall, heading for the underground prison, when I sensed a shift in the air. Soft footsteps approached from behind. Her scent reached me before she even stepped forward to stand directly in front of me.
Dressed in black overalls, her beauty had not diminished in the years since we parted. I recalled that night, the words we had exchanged.
Xyrrha Abyss. My cousin.
“When I heard the maids gossiping about Apex returning, I didn’t believe it until I caught your scent,” she said, her voice soft. “You’ve returned after five years, my love.”
She stepped closer, but I pulled back before any contact could occur. She paused, studying me. I set my jaw and tried to pass, but her voice followed.
“You know it’s unfair, breaking up with me over something so trivial.”
I said nothing. Instead, I pressed on toward the underground prison.
When I arrived, Hades was seated on the stone bed, his gaze fixed on me. He wasn’t drinking; he was sober.
“Open up,” I commanded the guard. He bowed in obedience, unlocking the gate, and I stepped inside. The guard relocked it behind me.

Gently, I sat beside my brother, and he handed me a bottle of alcohol. I took it, and we clinked before taking a long sip.
Silence hung between us, heavy, until I finally spoke.
“Why didn’t you send a message?” No response. I set my jaw. “You’re on death row and couldn’t send a letter to the Lycan Kingdom? What if I hadn’t sent Chantel here, and he returned with information? What would I tell our sisters? You know women, they never recover from shock, and neither would I.”
Hades shrugged and drank deeply, sighing.
“Father wanted a puppet, little brother. I said I wouldn’t be one, and he quickly ordered my death.”
I frowned, confused.
“Father isn’t evil, Hades. He’s only angry. I’ll plead with him on your behalf.”
“He won’t listen. He wants a puppet. If I refuse, you’ll be asked to take the throne.”
I swallowed hard.
“Actually… he already asked me.”
Hades laughed, unbothered.
“And what did you say?”
I glared at him.
“What else? First, I can’t marry anyone else as I already have a woman. Second, moving between kingdoms to rule both? It’s exhausting to even think about.”
“Who was the woman they wanted you to marry?”
“Xyrrha.”
“Wow!” Hades chuckled. “Your crazy ex. Well, I think you’re better off. Mine? Salo’s daughter, Kiara. Vile as her father. I never wanted the throne if she were my bride.”
I fell silent, sipping my drink again. Seconds later, I emptied the bottle and reached for another, but Hades pushed it away.
“You’re dangerous when drunk. Don’t come kill me before my time,” he said, grinning.
I smiled, then let it fade. I sighed shakily, meeting his gaze.
“You sent Chantel here… why?” he asked. I swallowed, looking away.
“To deliver a letter… but I guess he couldn’t meet you.”
“What was in the letter?” he asked, eyes sharp, For a moment, I wondered whether to tell the truth.
I met his expectant stare and my heart clenched. I let the words drop like a bomb,
“It’s about Zephyrine.”

“Your woman? That’s my future sister in law. What about her?”
“She’s not what she appears to be, Hades.”

“She dumped you?” he asked, and when I didn’t answer, he set his jaw. “You needn’t worry. She will be yours when… wait. I’ll send…”
“She is an Ashmere,” I cut in quietly. “A true–blooded Ashmere.”

The tension that fell between my brother and me was so thick I could hardly breathe. I searched his face, but he wore no expression at all. Then, suddenly, he chuckled and gave me a long stare.
“Are you drunk already?” he asked. But when I didn’t smile or answer, he paused, frowning. “You’re serious?”
I nodded slowly.
“I am.”
“An Ashmere… You mean… the warrior clan?”
“They are like family,” I said softly. “Just like you Abyss.”
Hades turned away, sighing heavily before meeting my gaze again.
“How did you know?”
“She is the Alpha of Ash Pack.”
“Ash Pack?”
“The pack where the Ashmeres live. Her father was the warlord on the battlefield five years ago, Hades. Her mother was the general we cornered, and her brother… he was the strategist we…” My voice trailed off, and I exhaled shakily. “I was stunned when I found out.”
“I’m still stunned myself. Does she know who you are now? Has she broken up with you?” he asked.
I stared at him in disbelief.
“Don’t break my heart with that question. Zephyrine and I are still very much together.” I sighed. “We made love just last night.”
“So she doesn’t know you’re half Lycan, half demon? A warlord who fought on the battlefield five years ago side by side with the Abyss?”
I shook my head.
“I only told her the defeated demons took refuge in my kingdom. Hades, remember the goddess of war everyone spoke about? The one who defeated Xyrrha? That was Zephyrine. She was the one who led the battle. The one who shattered the spell.”
Again, my brother went still, stunned. He stared at me in awe before frowning and shaking his head.
“You sure this isn’t fate, little brother?”
“That’s what I asked myself when I first heard the truth from her. I couldn’t think straight for a long time. And I’m worried Father won’t accept her or the Abyss.”

“You must keep her at all cost, little brother. And I’ll advise you to tell her who you are before she finds out elsewhere.”
“Hades… she hates demons.” I whispered. “What if she learns I am part of the same demons tied to her parents‘ death?”
Hades locked eyes with me, his gaze heavy. He swallowed hard, then shook his head.
“You should explain everything to her. It wasn’t the demons that killed her parents or comrades. That first wave battle was nothing but a death sentence disguised as war. The werewolves were betrayed by their own kind. We demons had nothing to do with that.”
“Yeah…” I breathed, bowing my head as memories of the battlefield cries came rushing back. “But will she still forgive the demons? Or me for what I did that day?”
Hades placed a firm hand on my shoulder, shaking it gently.
“If you hadn’t arrived at that nick of time, not even Varyn would have made it out alive. You saved his life, and that’s enough to earn her forgiveness!” He searched my eyes, then let out a weary sigh. “You’ve suffered so many times, little brother. Sacrificed too much for me even in that war. This time, let me save you.”
“Hades…”
He rose from the stone bed and went to the gate, speaking to the guard.
“Tell Father I’ve agreed to his order, but I have my conditions. And I will declare them before all.”
“Yes, My Prince.”
The guard left, and I quickly stood, staring at Hades in awe.
“I won’t let you enter a loveless marriage, Hades.”
“It’s fine. As long as you get your woman and find happiness.”
“You think I’ll be happy knowing you’re trapped in a loveless marriage?” I asked, my voice raw.
He only shrugged, turning to face me with a smirk.
“We can kill Kiara anytime, even before the wedding. Then I won’t have to endure it. What do you say?”
I didn’t respond. I only returned to the bed and sat, my thoughts heavy. I had learned from the greatest. Death was always the simplest way to remove an obstacle.
I studied my brother, and for a moment I wondered why he admired me so much. He wasn’t judging me for loving an Ashmere, someone from the very family that had slaughtered our army in war.
“The Ashmeres made you hang your armor, little brother,” he said quietly. “Yet you love one of them and want her at any cost. Won’t you regret it?”
“Instead of victory, you chose to forgive the Ashmeres too and you returned home a warlord who left the battlefield unfinished. Did you regret it?”
Hades swallowed hard. That war five years ago had carved a wound that would never heal in both of us. His
eyes lingered on mine as he spoke again, voice grave.

“Apex.” He called me by name, and I knew what came next was serious. “I didn’t retire because I left the battlefield unfinished. I hung my armor forever because I was betrayed in that war, just like the Ashmeres. The battle was nothing but a trap, meant to make the Abyss and Ashmeres slaughter one another. And before you leave this realm, I have something for you. It will help you understand why that war was even issued in the first place.”

The sound of footsteps came closer, followed by a gentle tap that jolted me back to reality. I looked up to see Kai standing before me, and I nearly hissed aloud.
“You are here.”
He didn’t answer, only stared at me with concern. I could tell he was worried. Almost everyone in my family was because they knew I was slowly losing myself.
“What report do you bring?” I asked, seated in the council chamber, my gaze fixed on the scroll in his hand. With a sigh, he extended it to me,
“Alpha Nyroth, no one wants to trade with us anymore. Alpha Orod, who once begged for partnership, has completely withdrawn. It turns out the Ashmeres aided him in a war years ago, and he is heavily indebted to Ash Pack. The only reason he ran after Hue for trade was because of Zeph… I mean, Alpha Zephyrine.”
The words sank my heart further. It had only been a few days since I rejected Zephyrine, but it felt like
years.
I hated it. I hated that I had let her go, and I regretted it a thousand times. There was a time I could mindlink her as my mate, but now I couldn’t reach her at all. It was as though she had vanished from the shifter realm itself.
I let out a heavy sigh, about to speak, when more footsteps approached. A knock followed.
I turned my head toward the door just as Olivia walked in, exhaustion etched across her face.
The maids in Hue Pack had begun to quit since there was no payment. The trades we had secured were crumbling one after another. Hue Pack, which once thrived, was now drowning in debt. To make matters. worse, my mother had fallen ill after visiting Blackbridge Pack, and only Olivia was caring for her.
“Brother Nyroth,” she said as she entered. “I think Mom should see a healer. Her wolf is withering so fast. If we can get her treatment, she’ll be fine.”
At those words, I had no choice but to sigh. With what money would I pay a healer? With what means?
I swallowed hard, rose gently, and walked to the window, peering out with a heavy heart. It was as though Zeph had been my lifeline of fortune. Now that I had let her go, there was no light at the end of my tunnel.
Kaela.
That vile woman. She was the architect of all this, and yet I couldn’t even make her pay because I lacked the
power.
I sighed again and came to a conclusion. If I could not approach from the front, then I would turn to the back. I must go to Zeph and beg for forgiveness.

When I alighted, I stood there for a brief moment, releasing a shaky breath before heading toward the Dusk household. I knocked on the door, hoping Zeph was still around to grant me audience.
I knocked again, but no response came. Impatience and worry gnawed at me.
Word had already reached me that Kaela was now involved with the son of a wealthy trader from Island Pack, and that they were even considering marriage.
Surprisingly, I wasn’t jealous. I pitied the man. I knew Kaela meant no good. The words she had once spoken about her envoy mission still haunted me. She had said that her title as envoy of peace had been bought with blood. If that was true, then she hadn’t gone to bring peace at all. Where had she been for five years?
That woman.
I was still tangled in my thoughts when the door opened sharply.
Dessyn, Zeph’s friend, stood there glaring at me, her hostility plain.
“Is it my lady?” I heard Blue call from inside.
“Nope.” Dessyn replied flatly. “It’s someone who is just leaving.”
I raised an eyebrow, but she didn’t care. I could tell she had never liked me, not even when she visited Hue Pack to see Zeph.
“Why are you here, Alpha Nyroth?” she asked curtly.
“Zeph. Call her out for me,” I said.
She gave me a long look before asking,
“Why should I? Why are you here?”
“Because of Zeph. Now, will you call her out to…”
“She’s in a relationship. A genuine one, with the Lycan King,” she cut me off tightly. And then, twisting the blade deeper, she added, “They’ve already made love many times. They’re even speaking of marriage. Just so you know, Apex won’t leave her for anyone. Don’t waste your time. Take my advice and move on just like your mistress Kaela has. Thank you.”
Before I could respond, she slammed the door in my face, leaving me standing in the cold.
Humiliation washed over me. My throat worked as I swallowed hard, gritting my teeth. The way she behaved, I could bet my life she wouldn’t dare act like that to Apex. Insolent wench.
I turned toward the exit, disgraced and exhausted, about to climb into my carriage when a presence behind me made me pause.
I turned to see a shadowed figure step into the dim light. Recognition hit. It was the same man I had seen when leaving Blackbridge Pack days ago.
“Are you following me?” I asked.

He stared at me in silence for a long while. Something about him was different. His aura was unlike anything I had sensed before. Not fully werewolf, not something I could name.
“I’m not following you,” he finally said quietly. He looked toward White Pack, his gaze fixed on the Dusk household door, and nodded.
“I came only to check on my little sister.”
I frowned.
Then he turned and walked away.
My confusion only deepened. As far as I knew, Dessyn was the firstborn of her parents. She had no elder brother, no younger one, except for Moon.
Wait… was this man talking about… Blue?

The citadel stood magnificent before me, right in the middle of nowhere. A place where I was to meet the Mirror Monger.
I had grown weaker than I was in the morning, and how that dusk had fallen, I could not fathom how much the claw mark had drained me. Why it had to do that.
It felt as though my love was punishing me for leaving on a trip without informing him.
I glanced down at my knuckles, already turning white, then clenched my jaw against the pain and fatigue as I dismounted from the great white horse Lycannar had gifted me. I left her by the building and walked toward the citadel.
As I approached, the horse gave a quiet neigh and trotted closer, as though unwilling to let me go. I smiled faintly, rubbed her mane, and whispered soft words.
“I will be back soon. Stay right here.”
After that, I cast my gaze into the shadows of the forest, fully aware Moon was somewhere out there, his eyes locked on me.
We had traveled without pause all day, and I had barely touched the bread he bought at a tavern we passed. I had drunk little, too. My appetite was gone. All I could think of was bringing my brother home.
I turned to the citadel doors and lifted a hand to knock, but before I could, they opened on their own, startling me. I entered cautiously, every sense alert, and the moment I stepped inside, the doors shut behind me.
A vast hall stretched out, lined with countless mirrors. Reflections of myself stared back from every corner, and I swallowed hard. Lycannar despised mirrors. This place would be his worst weakness.
“You have come.” A voice rang out, though I could not tell where it came from.
I stood still, waiting.
“Are you an Ashmere?”
“Yes.”
“An Alpha?”
“Correct.”
“But I expected a man. Why a woman? I never knew the empire had a female Alpha.”
I steadied my voice and kept my jaw firm.
“I have yet to throw a celebration, but rest assured, once I find Varyn, I will. I heard you have words about him.”

The voice went silent. Then all the mirrors lowered, and the space shifted into what looked like a relic shop, shelves stacked with old and odd artifacts. In the center sat a middle–aged man with a gray beard and sharp
eyes.
We locked gazes for what felt like an eternity, until he abruptly turned away, muttering an order over his shoulder.
“Kill her.”
At once, men rushed in from every angle. My jaw clenchedz. Is this an ambush? One threw a punch, but I blocked and struck back. They came at me hard, but I intercepted them all, leaving them writhing on the floor, groaning and coughing.
The fight drained me. One had slammed into my arm, and the pain nearly crippled me. Sweat rolled down my face, but I wiped it away and followed a path the man who have give the order had too onky to appear into a smaller chamber where a mirror with an ornate handle sat.
He had been seated in a wooden chair but rose quickly, bowing deeply. I froze, caught off guard.
“Years ago, your father, Warlord Vale, came to this store after a great ceremony. My only son was sick, and I had no means. Your father traded his medal of honor to heal my boy. For that, I am forever indebted to the Ashmeres.”
Cold chills swept down my spine, and my eyes burned.
“Five years ago, the battle was the most gruesome. The first wave shook the empire, and we lost our finest warriors to demons. I loathe them for it. When I heard whispers of Lord Varyn’s disappearance, I was saddened I could not help. Then… I met a peddler. He sold me this relic, a mirror. At first I thought it ordinary. But when I looked inside, I saw another world, hidden, and among the captives was a man I recognized.”
His voice broke, and he lifted the mirror with reverence.
“I could not trust this truth to anyone unworthy. That is why I demanded only a true–blooded Ashmere Alpha could hear me. I never knew it would be you, my lady, goddess of war. You alone dared face my men and still stand.”
He pressed the mirror into my hands, his eyes soft, sad.
“Free of charge. I bought it from a peddler in Nighttain town and he frequents there. You will want to find him once you see what I saw. Farewell, my lady.” For more chapters visit FіndNovel.net
I swallowed hard, took the mirror, and left without a word. Outside, I approached my horse, took her reins, and led her into the night.
When at last I stopped, I clutched the mirror tightly, my heart thundering. For reasons I tried not to admit, my hands trembled as I lifted it before my face. At first, only my reflection stared back. Then the image wavered. Shifted.
Goosebumps prickled across my skin as my reflection vanished, replaced by another sight.
The Mirror Monger had not lied. This relic revealed a hidden world, one I wished I had never seen. Captives. Prisoners. And among them… him.
The color drained from my face. My heart sank, my knees buckled.

The once–great war strategist, the next Alpha of Ash Pack, the only son of Warlord Vale… Varyn Ashmere.
After five long years of yearning, of going half–mad with waiting, I finally found him and the state he was in broke me.
Before I could steady myself, I collapsed to the ground. Darkness closed in, and I passed out.
Back Where 145
Exhaustion like never before descended on me, and I felt as though I might pass out again. I tried to lift a finger, but strength denied me. All I could do was look up at the roof above.
I turned my head slowly and saw Moon packing a saddlebag. My throat tightened at the look in his eyes.
We were in an inn. A single room with a single bed, and I lay upon it.
“Moon?” I called his name quietly, and he turned at once. When he saw me, his eyes went wide.
“Zephyr.” He rushed to the bed, kneeling to take my hand, pressing his palm against my temple. “My gods, you look so pale. You passed out last night. Listen very carefully. I’ve packed our things and readied the horses. We’ll leave for Ash Pack today, after you’ve had breakfast. It’s a two–day journey, but we’ll make it.”
His words came and went, faint as echoes. I blinked, trying to move, but a harsh cough forced me back against the pillow.
“Zephyr, please. Just lay down. You’re so ill.” His concern rang deep, and I let out a shaky sigh.
“I can’t, Moon. I… I need to find my brother.”
“Zephyr,” he said softly, his hold on me turning tender. “You’ll find your brother, no matter what but not in this state. You’re dying. We need to get you home. And besides, the mirror–monger gave you nothing but an old mirror and…”
“No.” I cut him off, my voice weak but firm. “That mirror, Moon. Where is it?”
Silence fell, and dread gnawed at me. My heart ached. Was it… what…
“You fell last night, Zephyr. The mirror shattered when you dropped it.”
A cold chill shot down my spine. I sat up sharply, my body shuddering in agony.
“The mirror, Moon. Please tell me it hasn’t broken.”
He looked at me as though I were delusional and gently took my hand.
“Zephyr… please, lie back down and…”
“The mirror–monger helped me last night, Moon. He said my father once helped him, and in return he’d repay the debt. That mirror… it was a relic. A powerful relic. I saw Varyn, he’s captive. And… wait. The peddler. We need to find the peddler who frequents Nightine town and…”
“Zephyr!” he snapped, and I froze in silence. His jaw tightened for a long time before he bent, laying his head on my thigh like a man pleading. “Zephyr, please come to your senses. What you saw isn’t real. The mirror… everything… we need to go home. You’re running out of time,”
Moon lifted his head to look at me, and my heart sank. He didn’t believe me. That tore something inside me wide open.

Varyn… could I leave him behind and go home? No. I had already taken his place as Alpha. I couldn’t…
My thoughts broke as tears welled up and spilled down my cheeks.
Moon looked stricken at my brokenness, reaching to console me, but I turned away, rejecting his touch.
I was so down. So hurt. First, because he didn’t believe me. Second, because I had no strength to continue. Third, because the mirror was destroyed.
I swallowed against the ache and rose unsteadily from the bed. My knees buckled, and Moon caught me.
“Zephyr…”
“Let’s go back home.” My voice was low as I walked to the chamber to wash my face.
I stood before the mirror there, staring at my reflection for a long time. Gently, I pulled down the sleeve of my dress to look at the claw marks on my arm. The skin around them had turned purple. I needed treatment and no one was better at it than the princess of the Lycan Kingdom.
I pulled the dress back into place and stepped out. Moon was waiting, looking apologetic. He approached me carefully.
“Zephyr, I didn’t mean to snap. I was only concerned and…”
“It’s fine.” My tone was sincere. “I’m not angry. I’m grateful you’re here. How would I have survived last night without you?”
“Zephyr…”
I closed the distance and took his hand gently.
“I’ll journey to the Lycan Kingdom, while you return home. You’re right. I need a healer, and Princess Mearez is the best. Besides, no one will believe a story about a world inside a mirror except someone who’s half–mad. But I have someone who will. It’s time I tell my love. Couples help each other. They trust each other. They believe without hesitation. You… you are my comrade, my brother–in–arms. You protect me by setting limits. But my Lycan? He’ll burn the whole world to keep me safe. Let’s go. We’re running out of

I released his hand, strode outside, mounted my horse with practiced ease, and galloped away.
