Ch. 291..295: The Rogue is a Female Alpha chapter 291-295
Back Where 291
I woke with a start, and for a while I lay still, my eyes fixed on the man beside me. Lycannar.
He was asleep, so deeply asleep that, without the rising and falling of his chest, one might mistake him for the dead. Yet he looked so peaceful. Watching him like this made me feel peaceful too.
I leaned down and pressed a soft kiss against his forehead. When I pulled back, he didn’t stir, and I sat up quietly.
“Sleepyhead,” I murmured before slipping from the bed to freshen up.
It was dawn already, and I needed to leave soon. I bathed quickly, and when I returned, he was still in the same position I had left him. Something about it bothered me.
I was about to go to him when I heard faint voices outside the window, low conversation carried on the dawn breeze. Curious, I moved closer and peered down.
Three commoners stood there in the dim light, two women and a man.
“Are you sure about this?” one woman whispered, shaking her head.
“What choice do we have?” the other woman replied grimly. “We all know our King won’t approve of this kind of suggestion. He is everything, but he won’t let us starve.”
The man added, “We should go now if we don’t want to die hungry. I heard one of the nobles is offering work in exchange for a plate of food. If we get that, we should be grateful.”
The two women frowned, muttering.
“They’ve been making us suffer for a mere pittance. Don’t you think we should tell the King?”
“So you can burden him more?” the man snapped. “Have you seen him anywhere since the wolves destroyed his tower?”
The second woman leaned closer, whispering words that made my heart stop.
“Rumors say he’s dying. What will become of us if His Majesty dies?”
“Keep your mouth shut. Let’s get going,” the man hissed.

I watched as they walked away, heading toward some noble who was clearly exploiting their desperation for food. My throat tightened painfully, and I turned slowly back to Lycannar.
He was still motionless on the bed, still too still. Deep down, I knew he wasn’t truly asleep. Something wasn’t right.
“Lycan?” I called softly. No answer. My heart clenched tighter. “Lycannar?”
Louder this time, but still no response. Biting my lip, I dressed quickly and went to him once more. Gently, I pulled the blanket higher over his chest, kissed his temple, and slipped out of the room, closing the door behind me.
In the hall, Chantel was standing alone. Silent. He didn’t even meet my eyes. I swallowed and walked past him.
On my way toward the Princesses‘ quarters, I met Blue.
“My lady?”
“Good morning, Blue.”
“Why are you…” she began, then stopped when her gaze fell on my damp hair. Her expression sharpened into something between suspicion and betrayal.
“You’ve already bathed.”
It wasn’t a question. It was an accusation.
I forced a small smile and nodded. “I have to return to my pack before
I came to bid the Princesses farewell.”

Together we made our way to the bright hall just as Princess Mearez was entering Serena’s bedchamber.
I stopped at the doorway, letting myself be seen. Princess Serena was sitting up in bed, healed and stronger than the last time I saw her. When her eyes landed on me, her face lit up in delight.
“Am I dreaming, Mearez?” she whispered.
Her sister turned toward me, grinning.
“No dream. She arrived last night. Come in, Zephyrine.”

I obeyed, stepping into the chamber as the maids slipped out, leaving us privacy. I turned and saw Blue leaving too.
“I’ll wait by your carriage to see you off, my lady,” she said.
I nodded and she disappeared, closing the door behind her.
Silence filled the chamber. Slowly, I turned back. Princess Serena’s eyes were on me, still wide with disbelief.
“My baby brother, how is he?” she asked at last. Mearez’s gaze joined hers, both of them hungry for answers.
“Lycannar is…” I sighed. “You’re right, Princess Mearez. He’s different. Unusual. And I’m worried too.”
I sat on the bed beside Serena and took her hand in mine, gazing into her eyes with affection.
“If Lycannar could hurt his sister in a fit of blind madness… then I have no right to hold a grudge for him killing my father, who was a stranger to him, and an enemy on the battlefield.”
“Don’t say it like that,” Princess Mearez murmured gently. “The fact that you love each other doesn’t mean his sins should be excused.”
“Yeah…” I breathed, lowering my gaze. “But he won’t speak of that full moon night, or of what happened when his tower fell. And now I hear food is scarce here.”
Princess Serena sighed. As the one in charge of the traders‘ welfare, she knew the truth.
“The tower fell over the storage room. All our supplies were destroyed.”
“The crash killed hundreds, injured more,” Mearez added grimly. “The herb house collapsed too. We have nothing left. No food. No herbs. We don’t know what to do.”
I froze. My chest tightened. Did Varyn… did my own brother truly know the destruction he had caused? What his actions had brought upon the Lycans?
“Lycannar told me you have to hold on until the next full moon. I don’t know what that means… but I need to know how much the people can endure until then.”
The Princesses exchanged a startled glance, their eyes full of confusion as they turned back to
me.
“What are you talking about?” Mearez asked softly.

“Let me fix what my brother has done.”
“Zephyrine…” Serena began.

“You have gold bars, but you can’t trade with the other packs. Let me help. Please. And I must hurry before my mate wakes.”
I stood abruptly, ready to dart for the door, when Serena’s hand caught my wrist, halting me.
I turned, meeting the stunned gazes of both sisters.
“What did you just say?” Serena whispered.
“About…?”
“You addressed the King in a way I’ve never heard before. What did
you
mean?”
Her voice trailed off as silence stretched between us. Slowly, I raised my sleeve, baring the runes etched into my skin.
“My wolf cries mate,” I said softly. “It’s Lycannar. You can’t refuse my help now, can you? I will soon be a Blood by marriage.”
Back Where 292
The carriage arrived at Ash Pack in the bright morning, and I carried no shame, nothing to hide anymore. I had decided to stand firm on what was right, and the Lycans starving was not right.
I believed… no, I knew… my father would not want that either. All his life, Warlord Vale Ashmere believed that one day he would fall on the battlefield, and he feared no other fate.
There is no greater honor for a warrior than died in action. It was time the truth began to be spoken.
I stepped down from the carriage and stood by the fountain, my presence immediately drawing eyes from every corner of the bustling lane.
I lifted my gaze toward Varyn’s window, where I caught sight of Dessyn watching me. For a moment, I wondered if my brother had returned, but seeing her smile told me he had not.
When I entered the hall, she was already waiting.
“Zephyr…” she whispered before rushing into my arms. I let myself linger in her embrace before pulling back to study her eyes.
“My brother isn’t back yet?”
“Not yet. But he’ll return soon.”
I nodded and turned toward my bedchamber, but Dessyn caught my wrist, her eyes fastening
on me.
“Zephyr… how is Apex?”
The question left me silent. I searched her eyes, weighing the risk.
If Varyn knew of Lycannar’s weakness, he might see it as an opportunity to launch another attack. But Dessyn would never betray me that way.
“He’s fine,” I murmured.
Her gaze swept over me, my hair, my face, and then down to the faint swell of my breasts.
“You made love to him?”

I did not answer. Instead, I turned away and walked to my chamber. She followed, entering as I opened the door. She paced toward the bed, her voice low and probing.
“You’re troubled. What is it?”
I stopped and faced her.
“The Lycans need supplies. Their storage was destroyed when the tower collapsed. Hundreds dead, more injured. Dessyn… it’s too much. And Lycannar won’t speak of it. I can’t shake this feeling that danger hangs in the air.”
She swallowed, her eyes steady on mine.
“How is Apex?” she asked again.
“Weak.” My chest clenched with the confession. “So weak, Dessyn. When I left him, he was… out. Fading. Without his tower, and with the rules broken, he’s vulnerable.”
Silence hung heavy between us as I continued, softer now.
“I need to speak with my brother. The Lycans need supplies. His fight is with Lycannar, not with the people. They should not suffer.”
Dessyn was quiet for a long moment. Then she nodded, a sad smile curving her lips.
“I’ll tell Varyn you wish to speak with him when he returns.”
She turned toward the door, but I quickly caught her wrist.
“Please don’t tell him about Lycannar’s weakness. He would use it to strike.”
Her eyes searched mine before she smiled again, nodding. Official source is find⦿novel.net

By afternoon, I stood at my window, waiting for the gates to part for Varyn’s return. Instead, I saw a carriage bearing the crest of Hue Pack approaching.
My brow furrowed when Nyroth stepped out alongside my brother. A strange unease rippled through me as I watched the two men exchange quiet words before parting, Nyroth heading toward the meeting chamber, while Varyn turned and lifted his gaze to me.

For a breathless moment, our eyes locked, and a spark flared in the space between us. We had not spoken, had not faced each other, since the night he toppled Lycannar’s tower. Now, at last, we would.
I watched him enter the hall, and soon the sound of his steps echoed, drawing nearer until the door opened and he appeared.
“Dessyn told me you’ve returned from the Lycan Kingdom.” His voice was quiet, steady. My throat tightened as I turned to face him. “You wanted to talk?”
Something about him had shifted. I couldn’t name it, but whatever bond had once tied us as siblings felt strained, soured.
“The Lycans need food. I want supplies delivered to them,” I said plainly.
His lips curved into a deceptive smile. He walk to the chair and settled down.
“Father would be ashamed of this path you’re taking, Zephyr.” His gaze held mine unflinching. “Truly.”
“Perhaps he would be more ashamed of the path you’ve chosen, Varyn, dining with those who send our people to their deaths.”
He swallowed, his eyes still fixed on me, the tension between us sharp as a drawn blade. Then he leaned back in his chair and called out,
“Isolde, bring tea. One cup each for myself and my sister.”
It wasn’t long before Isolde entered, set the tray on the table, and bowed before leaving us. Varyn reached for his cup and looked at me.
“When do you want the food delivered?”
The ease of his acceptance startled me. I almost raised an eyebrow. This wasn’t the resistance I had expected, but there was no time to question. Lycannar needed me.
“Tonight. I will lead the delivery myself.”
He nodded, lifting his cup.
“Come. Take yours.”
I hesitated, but obeyed. He raised his cup, touched it lightly against mine, and drank in one gulp.

But when I set my cup down, my eyes widened. Varyn leaned forward and spat the tea back into his cup, a cold smirk forming on his face.
“Tonight, the Princesses of the Lycan Kingdom will be abducted. And by the time tomorrow, their naked bodies will be displayed in the market square.”

Heat surged through my veins, fury boiling. I moved to rise, to act, but too late. The taste of the tea lingered, and dizziness swept over me.
“Silvermist,” he explained calmly. “For an ordinary wolf, it would have killed instantly. But you are an Alpha. It will only keep you under for a few hours.”
Agony tore through me as I fought it, but the numbness was spreading, consuming. My body faltered, collapsing. Varyn caught me before I hit the floor.
With careful steps, he carried me to the bed and laid me down gently, brushing a strand of hair from my
face.
“Good night, little sister,” he whispered.
I struggled, clawed at the fading edges of consciousness but my soul, my wolf, everything went numb. Darkness swallowed me whole.

“It’s a simple task,” he had said. “You go in there as though you’re delivering the food supplies. Once you’re inside, the warriors will guide you. Take his sisters, the two of them, and deliver them to me. With that leverage, we will win this war.”
I would not deny it. Varyn Ashmere was a cunning man, sharp–tongued and dangerously persuasive.
A man like him was the worst kind of enemy to make. But since Apex was his enemy and not I, then all was well.
That night, I arrived at the Lycans‘ massive gate, and even I could not help but marvel at the grandeur towering before me.
I had come with five Ashmere warriors disguised in cloaks, riding in the carriage with me. Traders delivering food, that was the pretense.
Everything had gone exactly as Varyn had planned. Zephyrine had spoken of Apex’s weakness. Dessyn had whispered it to Varyn. And now, Varyn had laid the task on me to deliver Apex’s sisters to him. The reward? Zeph, gifted to me as wife.
And so I sat there wondering who truly was the greater fool for love? Dessyn, betraying her best friend? Zeph, bedding her father’s killer? Or me, walking into the heart of a kingdom to steal its princesses on the word of a calculating man?
My thoughts were broken by the carriage halting at the gates. The sound of the wheels rolling to silence pressed against my ears.
The last time I had come here, the kingdom was alive, laughter ringing, people thriving. Now, with their supplies destroyed by the fall of the tower, desperation hung in the air. That, and only that, was the reason I would be allowed in.
One of the Ashmere warriors stepped forward, cloak pulled tight, and hammered on the gate.
And then a voice from within.
“Open the gate. It’s Zephyrine.”
I froze. That voice… I knew it. One of the princesses.
A wicked smile tugged at my lips. For her to be outside at this hour meant only one thing.

They were expecting Zeph to step down. But instead, cloaked warriors leapt out, blades flashing in the dark.
The first strike came swift, aimed straight at them. A guard lunged, intercepting, steel clashing with steel, the sound cracking through the silence of the kingdom. This update is available on
At once, the peace shattered.
I did not move from the carriage. I preferred to watch. To see how they would scramble to escape. My gaze drank them in, their beauty, their innocence. Perfect prey.
“What’s happening?” the younger one, Serena, not the healer asked, her voice trembling.
No answer came. Only another attack. A warrior’s blade slashed down, but another guard stepped in, taking the blow.
The steel cut deep, splitting his neck, blood spraying hot across the stones. He collapsed dead at the princesses‘ feet. They went pale, horrified.
“We’ve come to take you to Ash Pack!” one of the warriors roared. “Varyn Ashmere demands
for your brother’s sins with your shame!” you pay
He raised his blade toward them, and they froze, terror–struck, unable to even move.
The sword came down.
And then an intervention. One I had not foreseen.
The strike was stopped mid–arc. Steel rang, sparks bursting into the night. In the blink of an eye, blood sprayed again, but this time it was Ashmere blood.
The warrior fell lifeless at the feet of another.
I stiffened, my heart jolting. Slowly, I looked up. The curtain of the carriage shifted, and I saw him. That same bodyguard, the one who had cut down the Rogue Alpha on the day of Apex’s coronation.
Chantel.
Even from where I sat, I recoiled. I had seen enough of his skill to know what his presence

meant. For him to draw blood here… laying hands on the princesses was a sin Apex would never forgive.
“Chantel…” one of the princesses breathed, her voice trembling.
He turned. Serena clutched her hand, crimson spilling from a deep wound where a blade had cut her. His face shifted, horror flashing, and then came rage. A raw, unbridled rage that broke him open.
Without hesitation, he surged at the four remaining Ashmere warriors. Steel clashed. Bodies slammed. In mere moments, two more were dead, their blood staining the stones.
But then, they rallied. They came at him as one, cornering him, overwhelming him. And in that chaos, one warrior snatched Serena by the throat, pressing a blade against her neck.
“Drop your sword!” he bellowed, his voice wild, shaking with disbelief. Three of his brothers already dead. “Now, or she dies!”
Chantel stilled. Ominous. Silent. His sword slipped from his hand, clattering to the ground.
By now, we had an audience. People had gathered, their horrified whispers carrying on the cold air. The kingdom watched as blood soaked their stones.

“We were ordered to take two of you so you can be raped and disgraced. But since this cur has slain three of us, we’ll take a life instead. This one’s blood will pay…”
His words ended in fire.
Because then it happened. Something no one expected.
Chantel moved.
His body shifted, and in that instant, his true nature was revealed. Wings vast, tattered, yet strangely magnificent burst from his back. Not a wolf. Not a man. A demon.
The crowd gasped.
He moved with impossible speed, faster than even an Alpha could comprehend. In half a second, the sword was wrenched from the warrior’s grip, Serena torn free from his hold. And when Chantel descended again…

The last Ashmere warrior threw down his blade and fled in terror. And in that moment, I knew. If I valued my life, I would do the same.
The carriage wheels rattled as we fled back through the gates. Behind us, the iron doors slammed shut with a thundering finality that drove ice down my spine.
Outside, beneath the black sky, I swore an oath. I would not set foot in this war again. Not now. Not ever.
Because tonight, we had spilled the blood of a Blood.
And if Chantel, Apex’s bodyguard, was a demon…
Then gods help us.
What, then, was Apex Blood himself?

Lycannar
It is the sound of wind rustling that wakes me. I open my eyes with a low groan, feeling heavier than usual. Slowly, I reach for her, Zephyrine, but the space beside me is empty.
That makes me sit up, scanning the bedchamber. No sign of her. Even her gown, the one she’d hung by the stand, is gone.
Slowly, I get out of bed and walk into the bath chamber. I wash, the silence pressing hard against me. It is only when I finish bathing that I realize something is wrong. The stillness outside my kingdom feels unnatural.
Frowning, I return to the bedchamber and dress, raking my damp hair back with my fingers. I finish lacing my boots and walk out to pause.
Chantel isn’t in the hallway. He’s always on alert when I’m not steady. His absence draws a deeper unease.
With quiet caution, I make my way down the hall, emerging into the open. That’s when I see it. Something has happened.
I move toward the tall window, my gaze falling on the courtyard below. The stones are stained with blood. It wasn’t there before I fell into that deep sleep. My chest tightens. My sisters… or my people? ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ꜰʀᴏᴍ FindN()vel.net
I rush down at once, heading straight toward the princesses‘ quarters. The maids are tense, moving quickly, fear etched in their faces.
The courtyard hums with hushed murmurs, people whispering, pointing. When they see me appear, silence falls like a weight.
Chantel stands at Serena’s door, his sword still dripping red. Seeing that, I swallow hard.
“What happened?” I demand, my voice low.
He doesn’t answer, only bow. I push past him into the chamber and stop at the doorway. Serena lies pale and weak upon her bed. For a moment, guilt flickers. I had hurt her not long ago. Is that why she still looks so fragile?
“Lycannar.” Mearez’s voice comes from behind. She steps in with a bowl of herbs in hand, her expression taut.

Her question drifts past me. All that gnaws at me is what could have happened. She seems to read my silence and swallows hard before speaking again.
“We were attacked last night. If it weren’t for Chantel… we would have been taken.”
I freeze.
“What?”
“The Ashmeres,” she breathes. “Five of them. They came to take us, to use us against you. Rape and disgraced, so they say.”
For a long moment, I can’t see or think. My pulse pounds. Rape?
“The gate is sealed. There’s no way five men could have entered.”
“We thought it was Zephyrine,” she says softly, shame flickering in her eyes. “She sent word that she would deliver food supplies. We thought it was her…”
“Food supplies?” My brow furrows deeply. “Why would she think I need anything from her pack?”
“Lycan…” she sighs, clearly exhausted. “They hurt Serena. And they would have hurt me too. That isn’t the issue now, the issue is that Chantel saved us, but at the cost of revealing what he is. Everyone knows now. He’s a demon.”
I go still. Completely.
“In no time,” she continues, “they’ll realize you carry the same blood.”
A low growl builds in my throat.
“Why would Varyn Ashmere think he can march into my kingdom because I stayed silent after he destroyed my tower?”
Mearez’s eyes widen.
“Lycann, we are safe. You are not listening. That’s not what matters right now. The problem is that Chantel’s identity is exposed…”
I cut past her words, fury rising. The audacity stuns me. Because I had chosen peace, restraint,

If it weren’t for my shattered tower, for the rule I broke that left me weakened, no wolf would dare cross into my kingdom and live.
My gaze drops to the faint wound on Serena’s neck. Rage coils inside me.
“Prepare my horse, Chantel. Bring my twin blades.” My tone is final, cold. He bows once and obeys.
Mearez pales, rushing to my side, striking my shoulder.
“Lycann, you can’t retaliate with war! You have no armies, and you’ll lose control over your beasts. It’s better to stay weak than become something uncontrollable!”
I don’t answer. Not yet. I look at her, at the fear in her eyes, and I realize what she’s endured these past nights. Still, some lines cannot be crossed.
“If Varyn Ashmere dares enter my kingdom unafraid,” I say quietly, “then perhaps it’s time I stop pretending to be tame. Everyone has limits, Mearez. And mine do not bend when it comes to my sisters.”
I turn to leave, but her voice stops me.
“You killed their father. He only wants revenge.”
I turn halfway, meeting her gaze.
“And he’s killed my men at war. Just because I never declared it doesn’t make it any less true. You have no idea what the families of my warriors feel when their husbands, fathers, sons never return.”
“Lycann…” she whispers, trembling. “They’ll know what you are.”
“Maybe it’s time I start embracing what I am,” I say flatly.
Without another word, I walk out into the open. The people are gathered everywhere, watching me in silence. Their king. Their cursed king.
I take my gloves from Chantel, mount my horse, and grip my twin blades. The gates creak wide open for me.
And with fury coiling tight in my chest, I ride out towards the Ash Pack.
Back Where 295
I suddenly jerked awake with the immense feeling of the runes burning warm beneath my skin, as though he’s near.
I open my eyes instantly and go still for a heart–stopping moment, trying to remember what happened last.
Then the sound of galloping hooves crashes into my hearing, fast, furious, and I

cold.
I rush to the window and my heart leaps to my throat. Lycannar’s horse surges straight through the Ash Pack gates. Warriors pour out, surrounding him. They’ve been waiting.
“Lycan,” I whisper, horror filling me.
He dismounts just as Varyn steps out of the meeting chamber. My brother freezes when he realizes who has arrived.
Stillness falls across the entire packhouse. Everyone looks on, holding their breath, waiting to see what will unfold.
Lycannar draws his twin blades, his gaze cold and merciless. Then, he drops one sword at my brother’s feet.
“Fight me like a man. Let’s end this.”
My heart turns to ice. No. This shouldn’t be happening. Varyn shouldn’t accept that challenge. He’s skilled, yes, but Lycannar… Lycannar is something else entirely.
Before I can react, my brother bends and picks up the blade. In a blur, Lycannar strikes fast, violent. Their swords clash, sparks flying. Then Lycannar lands a brutal punch that sends Varyn crashing to the ground. In an instant, he raises the blade, ready to finish it and I leap from the window.
The wind rushes past as I land, taking Varyn’s side, shoving Lycannar back before he can strike again.
He doesn’t stop. Rage blinds him, surging wild, uncontrollable. I block his path, anchoring him with my body.
“Lycan..”
No response. His chest heaves, his aura trembles with fury. I lose patience and slap him hard across the face.
Gasps ripple through the entire pack. He goes still, his jaw tightening.
“Lycan,” I whisper again, reaching for him, but he steps back, walking toward his horse, gripping it for control, his teeth gritted.
My pulse hammers. I turn to my brother, who is pushing himself to his feet, his bruises already fading.
“I’ll give it to you,” Varyn spits. “You’re fearless. But your sins are unforgivable. You kill our father and think you’ll sleep peacefully at night?”
He points at Lycannar, trembling with rage. “He killed Father, Zephyr! Why are you still on his side? He didn’t fight fair in that battlefield, he made us orphans!”
“Fair?” Lycannar’s voice cuts through the air like a blade. “You speak of fair, Varyn Ashmere? Tell me, back in that battlefield, didn’t your father hold his sword?”
My heart drops.
“Lycan, please,” I whisper, begging him silently not to go on.
“You planned the strategy and it failed,” Lycannar says coldly. “The warlord you were supposed to fight against rrived when it suited him, and I won. That’s the truth. And you speak of how I made you an orphan, do you have any idea how many children you made orphans by killing the Blood army?”
Silence swallows the courtyard. The truth hangs heavy. I tremble at the naked honesty of it.
“You slaughtered men on the battlefield, and I did the same,” Lycannar continues. “Admit it, you’re only guilty because your plan failed and your father paid for it.”
Varyn’s face twists in rage.
“How dare you…”
He lunges, but I grab Lycannar, dragging him back, forcing distance between them. My heart pounds as I turn on my brother.
“Will you calm down?”
“You heard what he said!” Varyn’s voice cracks with venom. “How can you ask me to calm down? I wish last night had gone as planned, your precious Lycan’s sisters would’ve been raped
Lycannar’s fury ignites, and he lunges forward again, but I cling to him, pulling him close, holding him tight.
“Lycan, please… please, calm down. I beg you.” I cup his check, forcing his eyes to mine. “Look at me. Lycan, look at me.”
He stops, his chest still heaving. Slowly, his gaze meets mine. His eyes, once gold, shift to a stormy grey, and for a moment, my heart twists at the raw pain inside them.
He swallows hard, biting his lip.
“They came last night to hurt my sisters, Zephyrine,” he says hoarsely. “If not for Chantel, they’d be gone. Taken.”
“Lycan..
His voice breaks low, his every word heavy.
“I respect you, Zephyrine. Too much. And I don’t want more blood spilled between our families, but my sisters are off limits. If my brother Hades were here, blood of your brother would have been spilled.”
“I know, Lycan.”
“They were raped before, many times. They’re broken, scarred, haunted. No one will touch them again. No one. I’ll never sit by and watch it happen.”
The truth hits me hard, cold and deep, raising goosebumps across my skin. I nod slowly, my throat tight.
“Please,” I whisper. “Stay calm. I beg you.”
My touch softens, and he exhales shakily, grounding himself again. For a moment, he closes his eyes, steadying his breath. When he opens them, his irises burn pale gold once more.
I lean forward and kiss him softly before wrapping him in a tight embrace.
After a quiet moment, I pull back and say,
“I’ll come tonight to see them. I’ll apologize properly for what happened. I promise.” He searches my eyes in silence. Then, without a word, he presses a kiss to my forehead.

He steps back, retrieves his twin blades, and mounts his horse. With silent fury, he rides away.
Everyone watches, awe and fear mixed in their eyes.
The Blood army died in battle, and so did my father. Maybe that makes us even.
That’s the truth we all need to face, that in war, there is no fair fight or unfair fight.
When we march to the battlefield, there’s only one law. Kill or be killed.
My father fell on the latter category. He got killed. The chapter should have ended there.
Swallowing hard, I turn to Varyn Ashmere. He’s crossed too many lines now.
Maybe it’s time someone finally stops him.
