Ch. 1..10
To Be Yours Again by Taylor Chapter 1-Divorced
Jenny Walter walked out of the divorce court with a divorce decree in hand.
Warren Duncan, her butler, looked somewhat embarrassed as he said, “This is for you from Old Mr. Faust, Miss Jenny.”
Then, he passed her a bank card. Even though he didn’t explain what it was for,
Jenny understood.
She was a little taken aback. After a moment, she responded, “There’s no need for this. Please thank him for me. I am grateful for his care for the past two years.”
With that, she headed to the street and entered a black Maybach that had been waiting a while for her. She felt a little frustrated when she saw the people in the car.
“It’s just a divorce. Why are y’all so nervous?”
“Did you really get a divorce?” asked Zack Chandler, who was in the driver’s seat. He turned around to cast her a skeptical look.
Nodding, Jenny chuckled, “Look at my divorce decree. It’s still warm from the printer.”
She produced the document from her bag and waved it before them.
“Lovely!” said Zack, laughing aloud. “You should’ve gotten a divorce ages ago.
In fact, you should’ve never married him!”
Jenny looked at him before interjecting, “Can you focus on the road? I don’t want to die right after my marriage did. Also, a divorce isn’t exactly a good thing.
Why are you so happy?”
Wasn’t marriage something sacred? Jenny wondered why her brothers had wished hard for her to get a divorce.
“Of course, I’ll be happy,” he said, glancing at their eldest brother, who had been silent since Jenny entered the car, “I’m not the only one who’s happy. Gilbert is happy too.”
When Jenny looked at him, Gilbert Hawthorn did not deny Zack’s statement. He nodded immediately, saying, “Zack is right. This marriage should have never happened in the first place.”
“It was Grandpa’s last wish,” she replied with a helpless sigh. “You know I couldn’t go against his will.”
At the mention of their grandfather, they fell quiet for a moment.
Zack broke the silence, whining, “I don’t know what Grandpa was thinking. Why would he make you marry that bastard Alec? He treated you as if you were invisible for the entire two years of your marriage!”
If Jenny hadn’t stopped him, Zack would have taught Alec Faust a lesson ages ago.
In contrast to Zack’s outburst of anger, Jenny was much calmer.
“It’s not too bad. We respected each other’s space and boundaries for the past two years. He never visited the Faust mansion since we got married. I bet he doesn’t even know what I look like.”
After two years, the married couple should have been each other’s closest person. However, for some ridiculous reason, they had never met each other.
No one else would have been able to accept such a marriage, but Jenny accepted her situation. To begin with, she had been reluctant to marry Alec, but she needed to fulfill her grandfather’s last wish. Meanwhile, Alec must have been coerced by Old Mr. Faust; therefore, neither of them would have been happy.
“If I knew he was such a jerk, I wouldn’t have allowed you to marry him,” Zack said, clearly resentful towards Alec.
“If Grandpa really wanted you to marry, he could have asked you to marry me!”
he suggested, grinning. Then, he added, “Or you could have married Gilbert.
We are both better candidates than that bastard Alec.”
Jenny was speechless. She had no idea what went on in his head.
“Can you stop joking around? No one would marry their sibling.”
Unfazed, Zack countered, “We are not related by blood. There’s no reason we can’t marry.”
Jenny rolled her eyes at him. Although her older brothers had been adopted by her grandfather, they all grew up together. Hence, regardless of their biological relationship, she regarded them as her true brothers.
“Stop it, Zack. You’ll always be my brothers.”
Zack was joking around, so Jenny didn’t take it seriously. However, neither noticed how Gilbert was utterly silent in the back seat.
When Zack asked Jenny to marry him, Gilbert’s eyes immediately shifted toward her. However, after hearing her response, the intensity in his eyes died,
returning to normal. He had kept things to himself very well. Despite being around each other for so many years, neither Zack nor Jenny noticed anything unusual about him.
“Let’s talk about something else. It’s great that you’ve finally gotten a divorce.
Do you have any plans for the future?” Gilbert asked. His voice had a magnetic lull to it. Like the sun in winter, it brought warmth and comfort to the listeners.
“You chose to retire for the sake of your marriage, and you disappeared for two years. Everyone outside our family is going crazy trying to look for you.”
Jenny sighed, feeling a little nostalgic about the old days. “I’ve been gone for too long. I wonder if they still remember me as Dr. Walter.”
“Of course, they would!”
Gilbert looked at her, his eyes flashing with emotion as he said, “You are one of the most famous brain surgeons in the world. No matter how long you’re gone,
no one will ever forget you.”
“Really?” asked Jenny, smiling. Her eyes glowed with eagerness as she said,
“In that case, let’s celebrate my return as a surgeon.”
To Be Yours Again by Taylor Chapter 2-On the next day, at the president’s office of the Faust Group, Vincent Duncan hung up the phone. He turned to look at the man sitting behind the desk, who was preoccupied with work.
“Mr. Alec, I received a call from home informing us that the divorce decree has been issued.” The words did nothing to stop Alec’s hands from busying themselves with work.
“Okay. How much money did she want?” “Warren said that she didn’t ask for a single penny.” Hearing that, Alec frowned immediately.
“Not even a single penny?” “Yes, Warren told me that Old Mr. Faust wanted to pay her a sum of money, but she refused it.” Even Vincent, who was Alec’s assistant, was surprised by the turn of events. After all, according to his sources, Jenny was from the countryside and was very likely from a poor family. Why did she ask for nothing?
Alec stopped paging through the documents as he pondered for a moment.
Finally, he said, “Find out where she is and give her the house in Charmford.” His ex-wife had been quiet for the past two years and never caused him any trouble. In addition, the divorce was completed smoothly, so there was no reason for him to treat her harshly.
Vincent nodded in acknowledgment of his instructions. However, he did not leave the room.
“Anything else?” asked Alec with a deep frown when he saw him standing there.
“Yes,” replied Vincent. Under the intense gaze of the Faust Group’s president, cold sweat broke across his skin. Hurriedly, he continued, “I just received news that Dr. Walter has finally reappeared after disappearing two years ago.” Vincent noticed a change in Alec’s expression.
“When did this happen?” “I was notified this morning.” “Get someone to investigate the matter immediately. Make sure you find Dr.
Walter at all costs, dead or alive!” Vincent quickly replied, “Sure, Mr. Alec.” Early in the morning, everyone in the Parrington Hospital was engaged in a deep discussion.
“Who do you think the new deputy director of the neurosurgery department will be? Do you think it’s a man or a woman? Do you think they’ll be easy to get along with?” “Who knows? Given the fact that they landed such a high position, they are either an expert in their field or…” answered a female staff member, giggling. It was clear what she implied.
“I heard that they’re very young. I think they got the position through their connections.” “I think so too,” agreed the rest.
After all, working in the medical industry was no different than working in other sectors—experience was the key to promotion. Since many of the staff members at Parrington Hospital could not assume the role of the deputy director despite working there for decades, the newly elected deputy director was the newest subject of their gossip.
Amidst their discussion, a nurse ran over to them.
“The deputy director is here! She’s really beautiful!” said the nurse.
Surprised to hear that, the crowd flocked to the Department of Neurosurgery, hoping to witness the divine beauty of the department’s new deputy director.
Under their curious gazes, Jenny exited the director’s office and walked into the deputy director’s office, which was exclusively dedicated to her. After closing the door, she sat at the desk and began to work without taking a break.
She never wanted to remain in Parrington. After all, she used to work abroad; hence, going abroad was the best option given her reputation and background.
However, Parrington Hospital obtained her contact information and called her in hopes that she would stay.
Appealing for her to join them through reason and emotion, they had described the embarrassing state of neurosurgery in Parrington Hospital to her. They told her that many people could be saved if she stayed, and their words caused her to waver in her decision. In addition, her brothers had openly expressed their hopes for her to stay. In the end, she relented.
“Wow, she’s so young! Is she even 30 years old?” exclaimed someone in surprise and disbelief.
“30 years old? I heard that she is only 26 years old.” “Impossible!” None of them could believe it.
“How is it impossible?” retorted Morgan Golding. “Don’t be fooled by her young looks. According to my sources, she graduated with a Ph.D. Haven’t you heard of Dr. Walter?” They looked at her in confusion, and Morgan couldn’t believe their ignorance.
“Dr. Walter? Is she a force to be reckoned with?” they wondered.
Rolling her eyes, Morgan said, “Search it up on the Internet, you ignorant bunch.” With that, she trotted towards Jenny’s office and rapped the door till she received permission to enter.
“Hello, Dr. Walter, I’m Morgan Golding, an intern here. The hospital director has appointed me as your temporary assistant to execute any tasks you have for me.
If you need anything, just let me know!” explained Morgan with a smile, her eyes shining with admiration.
Jenny was her idol. Rumors had it that she was a profoundly gifted student who skipped multiple grades. She was only 22 years old when she obtained her Ph.D —a genius among geniuses. It was the dream of many aspiring doctors to work alongside such a legend, even if it was just for executing menial tasks.
Oblivious to whatever was going on in her head, Jenny said, “Well, hello. Thank you in advance for your hard work.” “Oh, no problem!” Morgan shook her head, although she was thoroughly enjoying it.
“Okay, please sort out the neurosurgery medical records in the last ten years of this hospital and bring them to me,” instructed Jenny. Before Morgan could respond, she continued, “Also, bring me the information of the neurosurgery patients currently on the surgery waitlist.” Since she was new to the hospital, Jenny was not familiar with the hospital and its patients; hence, she needed to familiarize herself as soon as possible.
“Any problem with that?” asked Jenny, stopping in the middle of her work to look at Morgan.
Morgan immediately grew tense. Even though Jenny appeared very docile and gentle, she carried herself with an imposing, powerful air.
“No problem, I promise I’ll complete and deliver the tasks!” She nodded immediately.
Jenny nodded too. Without another word, she returned to work. Meanwhile, Morgan headed to organize the information Jenny had requested.
Jenny spent the entire morning studying the medical records in the office, and Morgan even bought her lunch because she worried about Jenny. She held the medical records in one hand and her food in the other, so engrossed in her work that she forgot all about Morgan, who was still standing in the office.
“Dr. Walter, have you…have you always been like this?” Morgan couldn’t help but ask.
Hearing that, Jenny glanced at her, “What do you mean?” “Have you always been…” Morgan paused before continuing, “so busy that you skip your meals?” “I guess.” She shrugged indifferently as if it didn’t really bother her.
“You can’t do this, your body—” Before she could finish her sentence, they were interrupted by the siren of an ambulance.
To Be Yours Again by Taylor Chapter 3-Jenny frowned immediately. She turned to Morgan and said, “Check the patient’s condition and let me know if any help is needed.” “Okay, I’ll do that!” Within five minutes, Morgan rushed back to Jenny’s office.
“Dr. Walter, please take a look at the patient. His condition seems very se—” Before Morgan could finish her sentence, Jenny was already out of the office, walking toward the emergency ward. Soon, they both arrived there, where they saw a group of people gathered. Faint sobs could be heard from the crowd.
“Please save my husband, Doctor! I’m begging you! He’s only 45 years old! I can’t live without him!” “Don’t worry, we are running an examination on him right now. We’ll only understand his condition when the test results are out.” Seeing that, Morgan tugged Jenny along as she squeezed through the crowd.
“Excuse me! The doctor is here.” Hearing that, the patient’s family members gave way to her quickly, allowing her into the emergency ward.
“What happened?” Jenny asked immediately.
“The patient got into a car accident and is now experiencing a brain hemorrhage.
We’re checking how much blood he has lost, but his situation doesn’t seem too optimistic.” Although the attending doctor of the emergency ward was not acquainted with Jenny, he decided there was no need for an introduction when he saw on her name tag that she was the deputy director of the neurosurgery department.
“Here is the CT scan of his head,” informed a nurse loudly as she handed them the report.
Examining the report, the emergency doctor frowned, instantly commenting, “The situation is very dire. Given the large amount of bleeding, he is experiencing a brain herniation due to increased intracranial pressure. Surgery must be performed on him immediately.” Scanning the report, Jenny agreed with a nod, saying, “Alright, let’s arrange a surgery.” “But…” began the emergency doctor, seeming somewhat embarrassed, “our hospital isn’t capable of this surgery.” Craniotomy was no ordinary surgery. “Let’s send the patient to a better hospital,” he suggested.
“The brain herniation is oppressing his respiratory center. He will die within half an hour if we don’t operate immediately. Are you sure we can get him to another hospital in time?” Jenny questioned seriously.
“But there are no doctors here who are capable of this surgery. What can we do if we don’t send him to another hospital?” asked the emergency doctor helplessly.
“I’ll do it!” Jenny declared.
“You’ll do it?” he asked incredulously.
He had heard how an external doctor landed the neurosurgery department’s deputy director position. He figured that the woman before him was that person.
Was she really capable of such a complex surgery?
“Surgery? What surgery is it?” asked the patient’s wife, finally coming to terms with the dire situation. Panic was written all over her face.
Jenny explained to her patiently, “Your husband is in a critical condition. Due to the bleeding in his brain, the intracranial pressure is high, resulting in a brain herniation. A craniotomy must be performed immediately.” “What?” asked the wife. ” No! Craniotomy sounds very dangerous. What if he doesn’t wake up?” Although Jenny was wearing a mask, the patient’s wife could tell from her voice that she was very young. Was a young doctor like Jenny capable of performing the surgery?
“Please calm down first,” interjected Jenny, suddenly raising her voice. It caused everyone to go quiet instantly. “I understand how you feel right now, but no time can be wasted given your husband’s situation. He must undergo surgery immediately. I am Dr. Walter, the deputy director of the neurosurgery department here at Parrington Hospital. I will be in charge of your husband’s surgery. Rest assured that I will try my best.” No doctor would ever promise a successful surgery.
“Dr. Walter? I haven’t heard of her before.” “That’s right. She must be scaring us. His condition probably isn’t that serious.” “Ah, all doctors do is lie to us so that they can make more money through surgery.” The patient’s wife was ready to sign the surgery consent form. However, hearing the murmurings of her relatives, she hesitated.
“I think we should transfer him to a bigger hospital,” one of them said.
“No, he can’t be transferred!” warned Jenny sternly as she grabbed the speaker.
“It takes at least two hours to get to the nearest hospital. Your husband doesn’t have that long!” “Don’t listen to her! She’s just trying to scare you. Who does she think she is?
How can we even trust her? If she wants us to believe her, she’d better get the hospital director to vouch for her. Otherwise, we should transfer him to another hospital immediately.” Their words swayed the patient’s wife. If the hospital director vouched for Jenny, it would prove that she was competent.
Jenny was frustrated by the whole situation. Now was not the time for this; time was of the essence!
She felt helpless as there was nothing she could do to stop them. However, if she allowed them to transfer the patient away, wouldn’t it mean that she was giving the patient a death sentence? Hence, she reached for her phone, ready to call the director. In any case, a person’s life was more important.
“I’ll vouch for her!” interrupted a deep voice.
Everyone turned around to look at the source of the voice. Behind them stood a man clad in a fitted black suit, exuding confidence.
To Be Yours Again by Taylor Chapter 4-“I’m Alec Faust, the president of Faust Group. If I vouch for her, is that enough for you?” he asked, looking at the patient’s wife.
Alec from Faust Group was here! There was a mixture of panic, curiosity, and disbelief on everyone’s faces. While they may not know Jenny, they all knew who Alec was.
Staring at Alec, who often appeared on TV, the patient’s wife finally nodded.
With such an influential person vouching for Jenny, she figured that Jenny must be a skilled doctor.
As they wheeled the patient into the operating theater, Jenny gave Alec a nod before heading inside. Although she was curious why he suddenly showed up to vouch for her, she didn’t have time to ask any questions. After all, saving her patient’s life was the focus.
As the lights in the operating room turned on, a group of people huddled at the door to wait, with Alec among them.
Three hours later, the lights in the operating theater dimmed, and a nurse finally exited the room. Immediately, the patient’s wife rushed forward, her family trailing behind, “How is my husband? Did the surgery go well?” “Yes, it was a successful operation that put the patient out of danger,” replied the nurse.
As soon as they heard that, everyone heaved a sigh of relief. Alec was an exception. Standing in a corner, he did not seem surprised by the result.
Soon, the nurse wheeled the patient out of the room, and the family members followed, leaving Alec alone at the door of the operating theater.
When Jenny walked out of the room, she noticed him immediately, as he did her. Quickly, he approached and said, “Hello, Dr. Walter.” “Hello, Mr. Alec,” she greeted in return. After performing hours of surgery, her voice was a little weak.
Alec wanted to get down to business immediately, knowing the severity of Faye’s condition. However, after noticing Jenny’s fatigue, he said, “I would like to treat you to a meal.” Frowning, Jenny refused his invitation instinctively.
“If you have something to say, you can just say it now.” He had never invited her for a meal for the entire two years of their marriage.
However, the moment they divorced, he wanted to treat her to dinner. How ridiculous!
Although she knew he didn’t realize that the doctor before him was the woman he had divorced just the day before, Jenny felt highly uncomfortable with the situation. She wanted nothing to do with him.
“Alright, then,” Alec didn’t need to be told twice, and he aired his request instantly. “I need you to operate on someone. These are her medical records.” Jenny received the materials he had prepared. Upon opening the folder, she saw a photo of a girl with large eyes smiling at her. So, was this why Alec didn’t visit her for the past two years?
How cute, she thought.
Nonetheless, it had nothing to do with her. Since they had divorced, he was free to like whoever he fancied.
Examining Faye’s medical records, the expression on Jenny’s face turned increasingly solemn. She was beginning to understand why Alec had come looking for her.
After a long time, she returned the folder to him, saying, “Her condition is very serious, but I’m sure you are very aware of that.” “Yes,” Alec nodded, his expression almost sorrowful. “She has had an operation in the past, but the illness unexpectedly relapsed. Almost everyone is telling us that she has no chance now.” Despite the situation, he refused to give up. How could he ever face Anthony Lawrence, who had died to save him, if he gave up?
Faye Lawrence had a brain tumor. In addition to the difficulty of the surgery, Faye was currently facing a relapse of her illness. The second surgery was always more complicated and challenging than the first.
Perhaps he noticed hesitation because Alec hurriedly added, “You can ask me for anything in return; I will agree as long as it is within my ability.” Jenny glanced at him. She never expected that the ruthless president of Faust Group would offer everything he had for his loved one.
“Where is she?” she asked. “I need to see the patient first.” Although she didn’t want to get involved with Alec’s issues, her profession as a doctor made her unable to refuse a plea for help. It was the same in this situation, even if the patient was Alec’s lover.
“She’s in the Faust Group’s private hospital. I can bring you there to see her right now,” he replied, somewhat surprised that Jenny agreed so quickly. He had been sure that Jenny would make some requests.
Hearing his reply, Jenny frowned.
“Is she not in Parrington Hospital?” “No, she isn’t here. Private hospitals are better in many aspects. You would also have a higher chance of success should you operate there.” Given that his private hospital had the most advanced equipment and provided the best conditions, there was no way he would allow Faye to stay in Parrington Hospital.
To his surprise, Jenny shook her head and apologized, “I’m sorry, but I can’t operate on Miss Lawrence.” “Why not?” Alec asked. Just moments ago, she was obviously keen on operating.
Feeling a little helpless, Jenny was about to explain when Alec handed her a check, saying, “Money is not a problem.” However, Jenny barely glanced at it. Although the amount written on it could tempt anyone, she smiled and said, “That is a large sum of money, but money isn’t the solution to everything.” “Then what do you want?” demanded Alec, trying hard to keep his anger in check.
Was his offer too low?
To Be Yours Again by Taylor Chapter 5-“I don’t blame you for not understanding medical law, Mr. Faust. However, I must inform you it prohibits me from practicing outside my place of registration, which happens to be Parrington Hospital, so…you understand, right?” Usually, she would provide a shorter explanation. However, for the sake of her patient, she was willing to go to further lengths.
“So, you can’t perform the surgery in a private hospital?” he asked.
“Exactly.” Jenny didn’t want to ruin her career for him. Alec fell quiet. He had not expected such a regulation. “If there’s nothing else I can help you with, please allow me to excuse myself. But Mr. Faust, please do make a decision soon.” Seeing Alec’s hesitation, Jenny knew he didn’t want to transfer Faye to Parrington Hospital because he lacked faith in their facilities and services. Since that was the case, there was nothing she could do.
Soon, Jenny disappeared from his line of sight. Vincent approached him, asking, “Did Dr. Walter agree to perform the surgery on Faye?” Alec shook his head. While she didn’t promise him she would do it, she didn’t depended on him.
Unaware of what Alec was thinking, he expressed his bewilderment. “These famous doctors are really weird.” After all, even the Faust Group’s president failed to convince her in person. It seemed that Dr. Walter was not an easy person to deal with.
With her spectacular first day, everyone in the hospital viewed her in a new, improved light the next day. Patients scheduled for surgeries were less reluctant to attend appointments when they discovered she would lead their operations.
Jenny performed three operations in a day. While her coworkers seemed overwhelmed, she remained full of energy throughout the day, showing no signs of tiring.
“Any more surgeries today?” she asked Morgan, who was standing behind her.
“No more.” Morgan shook her head. The neurosurgery department of Parrington Hospital had not been doing very well, so there were few patients. However, she had a gut feeling that everything would change with Jenny’s arrival.
“Dr. Walter, I’m sorry I looked down on you this morning. You are definitely the best neurosurgeon I have ever met,” said one of her team’s doctors. His eyes shone with admiration.
“You’re also the most hardworking doctor I’ve met,” added another doctor with a wry smile.
Smiling, Jenny looked at them and said, “You’re tired already? I used to perform six operations a day from morning to night without a break.” Hearing that, they gave her a thumbs up. Brain surgeries were notoriously long.
In addition, there were many nerves present in the brain. Hence, neurosurgeons were required to be highly vigilant throughout the procedure. One operation was enough to exhaust them, let alone six. The other doctors were too afraid to imagine it.
“Now you all finally know how great Dr. Walter is,” said Morgan with a smug chuckle, proud that her idol’s abilities were finally recognized.
“Yeah, yeah, we know.” “Okay, everyone. You all worked hard today, I’ll treat everyone in our department to a wonderful dinner tonight,” Jenny promised them. It was about time she had dinner with her department personnel.
“There’s no need for that,” they replied, chuckling. “Our department’s director promised us a long time ago that he’ll treat us to a meal to welcome you.” They were laughing and chatting as they headed towards the director’s office when a tall shadow suddenly loomed across them. When they raised their heads, they were shocked to see Alec standing there.
Why was he here again?
Everyone turned to Jenny. They had heard that he wanted her to perform surgery, which only fueled their admiration for her.
“Alright, everyone. See you at dinner tonight,” she said, facing them as if Alec wasn’t standing in front of her.
Everyone slipped away quickly, and only Alec and Jenny were soon left in the corridor. Jenny turned to look at him, saying, “You must have made up your mind since you’re here again, Mr. Faust.” Alec nodded, saying, “I have transferred Faye here, and she is now in her ward.
When will you be free to take a look?” Jenny nodded. As expected, Alec was firm and swift in his decisions and left no room for procrastination.
“I can go now,” she replied. Since she had nothing to do now, it would be good for her to visit Faye. If she were going to operate on her, there would be a lot of preparations to do.
With that, the two of them walked toward Faye’s ward together. Jenny didn’t say a word to Alec along the way, as if he was invisible.
When Jenny finally saw Faye, she seemed to be in serious condition. She looked pale and frail, too weak to withstand even a weak gust of wind. Faye raised her head when she heard them come in, and her eyes met those of the beautiful doctor.
“Alec, who is she?” “She is your chief surgeon, Dr. Walter.” Faye was visibly shocked. She had not expected that her surgeon would be so young. She would have thought he was joking if she didn’t know Alec well enough.
“Hi, Dr. Walter, thank you for agreeing to lead my surgery,” she said with a smile.
Her face was devoid of color, as if she would faint any second.
Jenny nodded and said, “I’ve read your medical records. Don’t worry too much.
It’s not a big problem.” “Real…Really?” she asked in disbelief. The doctors at the private hospital had more or less told her that she was about to die.
To Be Yours Again by Taylor Chapter 6-“I never joke,” she said with a proud smile. Clearly, she was very confident.
If she hadn’t divorced Alec, she would probably still be living her retirement life, so she wouldn’t have had a chance to save Faye. Perhaps it was fate telling her that Faye deserved to live.
After a brief discussion about Faye’s condition, she and Alec left the room. Only then did the smiles on their faces fade away, their solemn expressions returning.
“She should have had an operation earlier.” “I know,” he admitted, nodding, “but I only just got wind of you.” “I’m not the only one in this country who can perform this operation.” Jenny stared at him, unable to comprehend why Alec insisted on having her perform the surgery.
“Yes, others can do it too,” replied Alec. He was silent for a moment before he continued, “but I do not dare to take the risk.” Jenny’s reputation as an internationally renowned neurosurgeon was unrivaled; therefore, Alec preferred to wait until he found Jenny before letting Faye take the slightest risk.
Jenny understood what he meant, and her heart sank a little. For his lover, Alec was willing to exhaust any possible means.
In the midst of all of his consideration for Faye, had he ever thought of his wife, whom he had never met? Correction. Had he ever thought of his ex-wife?
She was angry, but not because she liked Alec. Her pride just couldn’t take it.
Jenny had always been a tough, headstrong person. She always strived to be the best and never took offense to any insult. However, marrying Alec was the first time she felt humiliated.
It was one thing that Alec didn’t fancy her and another for him never to meet her throughout their marriage. Despite her steadfastness and independence, she couldn’t accept it. Everything would have been fine after the divorce if they didn’t infringe on each other’s boundaries. However, Alec came looking for her for the sake of his little lover’s life. It would have been odd if she was fine with it. Yet, she wasn’t someone who could ignore a patient’s pleas for help, which aggrieved her greatly.
“Don’t get happy too soon, Mr. Faust. Although I promised to save Miss Lawrence, there are several conditions.” She had to make him pay, or she would lose out.
“Name them.” On the contrary, Alec was afraid that she would have no conditions. Things would be much easier if she set conditions.
After a moment of thought, Jenny answered, “I’m planning to build a laboratory, and I need funds and equipment.” “No problem, everything will be provided by the Faust Group,” he replied.
“Parrington Hospital lacks the latest surgical equipment,” she added.
“The Faust Group will be responsible for providing it.” He would have done that even if Jenny had never mentioned it. After all, he wouldn’t allow Faye to take any risk.
The way he agreed to her conditions with so much ease made Jenny feel weird.
She couldn’t discern what emotion was stinging her heart, but it did not feel good.
“Mr. Faust, you’re willing to do anything for Miss Lawrence. Aren’t you?” “Yes, because she is very important to me,” he answered, nodding without hesitation. How could the person entrusted to him by his savior before his death be unimportant?
It turned out that he was not as ruthless as the rumors said. He was only cruel when it came to Jenny.
She decided not to concern herself with it. After all, they had divorced, and the operation procedure would be their last interaction.
“Is that so? Since that’s the case, why don’t you donate a building? The hospital is short of an inpatient building.” Parrington Hospital was impoverished; they had a limited number of beds, and many patients could not be hospitalized. Asking Alec to donate a building would benefit the doctors and patients in Parrington.
Alec’s face went dark with gloom immediately. Gritting his teeth, he replied in annoyance, “Dr. Walter, you really care for your hospital, don’t you?” The equipment fund alone would cost him millions. Now he was expected to donate a whole building, which would cost him a few million.
Although Alec was clearly unhappy, Jenny couldn’t care less.
“Since you don’t seem too keen, I won’t force you. However, Miss Lawrence—” “I’ll donate a building!” he forced himself to say. He figured she must have known that he would agree to any condition.
Indeed, Jenny was confident he would agree. After all, no amount of money was worth more than his beloved.
“Do you have any other conditions, Dr. Walter? Just name them all right now.” Exuding an imposing air, he stared at her, his expression livid. It was as if he would strangle her if she named another condition.
Jenny knew she was testing his limits at this point. In addition, she would have agreed to perform the surgery even if Alec refused to comply with her request.
Hence, she was delighted with the outcome.
Shaking her head, she said, “That’s it.” “The surgery—” “The surgery will commence once you donate the equipment to Parrington Hospital,” she replied.
“The equipment will arrive here tomorrow morning,” he answered. Staring at her seriously, he said, “I’ll leave Faye’s life in your hands, Dr. Walter.”
To Be Yours Again by Taylor Chapter 7-Everyone from the neurosurgery department gathered at Fig Garden for dinner.
That night, the spotlight was on Jenny, who had just joined their department.
“Let’s raise our glasses to Dr. Walter. I hope she can lead the neurosurgery department of Parrington Hospital to success,” said Dr. Ledger, the director of Parrington Hospital’s neurosurgical department.
He wasn’t exactly a skilled surgeon, but he secured his position with many years of experience. He was initially quite upset that an external doctor secured the position of deputy director. However, after giving it some thought, he concluded that having such a competent neurosurgeon by his side would boost the department’s performance, improving his reputation. With that in mind, he regarded Jenny in a better light.
“Dr. Ledger, you flatter me too much,” Jenny said, raising her glass. “Since I can’t hold my liquor, I’ll drink a toast to you with juice instead.” Having said that, she gulped down the juice in the glass.
Everyone applauded heartily, unconcerned whether Jenny was drinking wine or juice. After all, she had a major operation the next day. Everyone enjoyed the meal, and Jenny was no exception.
Later, Jenny headed to the washroom. Upon her exit, someone called out to her, “Dr. Walter.” Jenny turned around to see Jared Stewart from her department.
“Dr. Stewart?” “We’re colleagues now, so you don’t have to be so formal with me. Just call me Jared,” he said with a giggle. His face was red, probably from drinking.
“Okay,” replied Jenny with a nod.
With that, the conversation ended, and they both fell silent. Jenny cast him a strange glance and said, “If there isn’t anything else, let’s head back to dinner.
Everyone is waiting.” “I…I want to ask you a question,” he quickly responded, clearly very flustered.
“What is it?” Jenny raised her eyebrows, confident that she knew what he would say.
“Well…” he stammered. It took him a long time to ask, “Do you have a boyfriend?” He stood there awkwardly, like a child waiting for their teacher to scold them.
“Do you?” he asked again worriedly.
Chuckling, Jenny shook her head and said, “No.” “Really? That’s great—” “I’m divorced,” she interrupted.
“You’re…divorced?” Jared couldn’t believe it. He almost thought he was experiencing auditory hallucinations.
Jenny nodded, “Yes, any problem with that?” “N—No,” he replied, disappointedly shaking his head. He thought he would have a chance if he tried hard enough since she was quite young, even if she already had a Ph.D.
However, she was divorced. Upon his reevaluation, he decided that the nurse who was trying to court him previously was pretty cute.
When Jared left, Jenny smiled. She was not surprised. It seemed like her status as a divorcée would save her from many troubles.
When she was about to leave, Alec exited the men’s bathroom. What a coincidence it was that they were meeting again.
When their eyes met, Jenny stopped herself from asking him if she was stalking her.
“You have a unique way of turning people down, Dr. Walter,” he commented with a mocking smile.
Jenny rolled her eyes, thinking it was all thanks to him. She walked away, ignoring him as she passed by him. Since she was not wearing her medical garments, she was an average person who had the right to ignore Alec.
“Have you been drinking?” asked Alec, frowning. He grabbed her wrist, displeasure written all over his face.
Jenny shook off his hand in annoyance.
“Mr. Faust, don’t you think you’re crossing the line? Do I need to tell you if I have been drinking?” She glared at him, her face flushed with anger.
Alec was stunned by the sight of her. Her rosy cheeks and bright eyes complemented her fair complexion perfectly. Although her lips were pursed in a cute pout, Alec knew that an eloquent tongue was hiding behind them.
It was his first time seeing Jenny without a mask. Even with her mask on, he could tell that she was beautiful. However, when she removed her mask, something within him stirred.
“I don’t want to put Faye’s life in the hands of a drunkard,” Alec said coldly when he returned to his senses.
Jenny took a deep breath, recalling all her moral lessons to stop herself from lashing out at him.
Swallowing her anger, she forced herself to speak calmly, “You’re worrying too much. I didn’t drink, so tomorrow morning’s operation will not be affected.” The smell of alcohol that lingered around her was from her colleagues, not from herself, as she never fancied alcohol to begin with.
Although Alec looked like he doubted her, he didn’t seem as upset as before.
“Good. After all, a person’s life is in your hands. But I’m sure you are already aware of that.” “Is there anything else, Mr. Faust?” she asked, reluctant to be around him even for another second.
“Do you hate me?” he asked suddenly, noticing that she was visibly displeased and annoyed.
His question caught Jenny off guard. Had she been too honest with her feelings?
She faked a cough as she tried to explain herself.
“You’re overthinking, Mr. Faust. I barely know you. How could I possibly hate you?” Alec agreed with that. Since they had never met before, there was no reason for her to hate him. Hence, he decided that he had indeed been overthinking.
To Be Yours Again by Taylor Chapter 8-When the equipment donated by Alec arrived at Parrington Hospital the next day, the director greeted Alec in person, showing how necessary the equipment was for them.
On the other hand, Jenny didn’t care about it. She was busy studying the results of Faye’s medical examination and discussing possible complications that may arise with other doctors in the department.
When the equipment had been installed two hours later, Jenny led her team to the operating theater, where Alec was waiting at the door. Seeing her, he immediately got up and asked, “Are you confident you can do this?” Putting on her surgical mask, Jenny raised her eyes to meet his.
“If I say I’m not, will you transfer her away?” Alec shut up, unable to form a response. Even if she said she was not confident, Faye still needed the surgery.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Faust. I will do my best.” There was no way she would let Faye die on her operating table.
The surgical team entered the operating theater. As soon as the lights were turned on, tension began to build. Time slowly trickled by, and soon six whole hours had passed.
“Mr. Faust, why don’t you rest for a while? I’ll wait instead.” Vincent looked worriedly at Alec, who hadn’t even so much as sipped water all day.
Shaking his head, Alec replied, “How can I rest when the doctors inside aren’t taking a break?” He was quite worried because he didn’t expect the operation to last so long. He couldn’t help thinking about Dr. Walter, who looked so tiny. Could she really perform such a lengthy operation?
“Get them some food. Make sure everyone can eat immediately after the operation,” he suddenly instructed Vincent, which caught him by surprise.
It was his first time hearing of a patient’s family ordering meals for their doctor.
When did Alec become so kind?
Glancing at the operating theater and thinking of the person lying on the operating table, he immediately understood.
It was all for Faye. After all, Alec promised her brother he would take good care of her. Of course, he would do something for the doctors operating on her.
Half an hour later, the lights in the operating room were finally turned off, and the door opened.
A nurse asked, “Is Faye’s family here?” Alec got up immediately, asking, “Is the operation successful?” “Yes, Dr. Walter said it was a success,” replied the nurse, who found it challenging to endure the operation that lasted several hours. “The patient will be transferred to the intensive care unit now. Please follow me to complete the admission procedures.” Alec looked at Vincent, who nodded and followed the nurse. After he left, Jenny and the other doctors exited the room, all pale with exhaustion.
“Thank you for your hard work,” said Alec, approaching Jenny warily.
Although she seemed to have the occasional attitude problem, Alec decided to let it slide for Faye’s sake. Meanwhile, already exhausted from the operation, the sight of Alec left a bitter taste in Jenny’s mouth.
“My work isn’t hard. My life is hard.” Why did her patient have to be Alec’s lover? It made her life so difficult.
“You all must be hungry. I have ordered some food for you. Please head to the office to eat,” Alec announced.
“You’re being too nice, Mr. Faust. It is our responsibility to perform this surgery,” one of the doctors responded, sounding rather flattered.
“Yes,” agreed another doctor, “it’s our pleasure to assist you, Mr. Faust.” This was Alec they were talking about. It was a rare opportunity to see him, much less to be directly involved in helping him. However, Jenny did not agree with the rest of them.
Listening to them compliment Alec, she was dumbfounded. Was it really their pleasure to assist him? Well, someone could take that pleasure away from her because she didn’t want it, she thought to herself.
Vincent led everyone to the office for their meal while Faye was wheeled to the intensive care unit. It had been a long time since she had such a long operation, so she was drained. Rubbing her temples, Jenny got ready to head home to rest.
“Aren’t you going to eat?” Seeing that she was about to leave, Alec reached for her hand instinctively, which he discovered was soft to the touch. Perhaps because she had just washed her hands, they were ice-cold.
For some reason, it stirred something within him. However, before he could process it, Jenny jumped away from him and stared at him warily.
“Watch yourself, Mr. Faust.” Then, she wiped her hands, distaste written all over her face.
Alec was exasperated. What did he do to deserve such an extreme reaction?
Something within him snapped, and he glared at her.
“Dr. Walter!” he spat furiously through gritted teeth. The low timbre of his voice was bone-chilling.
Jenny raised her head to meet his gaze, unwavering as she stared back at him with her eyes blazing.
“Don’t think you can be rude just because you’ve operated on Faye. I’m telling you, you’re testing my patience.” Was she testing his patience? What a joke! He was the one who was trying her patience.
“Really?” she asked. Suppressing her anger, she forced herself to smile as wide as possible. “Since that’s the case, let this be the last time we meet.” “You—” Before he could finish his sentence, Jenny had turned around and left, leaving Alec staring at her retreating figure. No matter how long he waited, he couldn’t shake off his exasperation.
“All necessary arrangements have been made for Miss Lawrence, Mr. Faust,” informed Vincent cautiously as he approached Alec from behind.
The truth was Vincent had completed the procedures a long time ago. However, from a distance away, he could sense the tension between Alec and Jenny, so he wisely stayed away.
“Do you think she hates me?” Alec asked suddenly as he continued looking in the direction Jenny had gone.
To Be Yours Again by Taylor Chapter 9-Vincent was stunned by his question. After a moment of thought, he answered, “I think that isn’t the case…maybe Dr. Walter just doesn’t want to see you—” Before he could finish his sentence, he felt a cold wave sweep across his body and instinctively shivered. When he raised his head, he saw Alec staring at him gloomily. Startled, he realized he had said something wrong.
“There’s no way she hates you!” he corrected himself immediately. “Given your many charms, it is impossible for any woman to hate you, so she must be playing hard to get.” He wasn’t exactly lying. After all, Alec was the dream boyfriend of Parrington women, and Jenny was the first who treated him like this. That was why he concluded that Jenny was trying to attract his attention in such a manner.
But was she really playing hard to get?
… A week later, Faye was transferred from the intensive care unit to a general ward. When Jenny and her team went making their rounds, they found her using her phone as she lay on the bed, appearing to be in a much better condition than before.
“How do you feel today? Any discomfort?” Jenny inquired, following protocol.
At the sight of Jenny, Faye smiled and shook her head.
“No, I feel pretty good.” Jenny nodded, not surprised by her answer.
“That’s good. After staying a little longer here, you can be discharged to recuperate at home.” When she was about to leave, Faye called out to her, “Dr. Walter, do you have some time?” Frowning, Jenny asked, “What is it?” “Nothing, I just want to talk to you,” she said in a small voice, which made her seem rather pitiful. However, Jenny didn’t feel sorry for her, because Faye was no different from her other patients.
“Sorry, I’m busy,” she said, declining her request.
“Just for a short while,” Faye pleaded hopefully.
Before Jenny could refuse, a doctor accompanying her on her rounds suggested, “Dr. Walter, why don’t you chat with Miss Lawrence while the rest of us continue making our rounds?” Faye was affiliated with Alec. Studying Faye carefully, her intuition told her Faye harbored ill intentions toward her. Afraid that Jenny didn’t know how powerful Alec was, the doctor asked her to stay. With that, the group left, leaving Jenny behind in the ward.
She walked over and sat on the chair beside the bed, asking, “What would you like to talk about?” “Oh, nothing much. I just wanted to thank you. After all, if not for you, I don’t think I would have survived,” answered Faye with an innocent smile.
On the other hand, Jenny remained expressionless and unmoved by her gratitude. “You don’t have to thank me. I was paid to perform your surgery, and Mr. Faust paid for your medical expenses.” Alec paid quite a lot for her surgery.
“I know that Alec has paid a high price for my surgery, but still, you’re the one who saved me,” she said, sounding so sincere that Jenny almost thought she had assumed the worst of Faye. However, Faye soon confirmed that her intuition was correct.
“Dr. Walter, do you have a boyfriend? I noticed that you’re still quite young,” she asked.
Jenny shook her head silently, wanting to see what Faye was up to.
“What is your type? I know many handsome, talented men; I could introduce you to them.” Jenny remained silent, and her gaze turned colder.
Faye hurriedly added, “Don’t get me wrong. I just don’t know how to repay you, so I thought of this. By the way, what do you think of Alec?” She observed Jenny, trying to observe if there was any change in her expression. Jenny couldn’t stop herself from laughing aloud. Was that what she was worried about?
“Miss Lawrence, you don’t need to test my reaction like that. I’m not interested in Alec.” It appeared that Alec didn’t make Faye feel secure around him, which would explain why she was so worried about losing him. What a scumbag he was!
“Dr. Walter, I…I didn’t mean that,” she replied, putting on a sad expression as if she had been misunderstood.
Just as Jenny was about to speak, Alec walked into the ward.
“What are you talking about?” “Alec!” Upon seeing Alec, Faye smiled instantly. “I was asking Dr. Walter about her ideal type. Since there are many handsome young men in our circle, I was thinking of introducing them to her.” Alec’s expression turned gloomy, feeling uncomfortable with the idea for some reason.
“Dr. Walter is a person of high standards. I doubt she would need your help in that area.” “Ah, you’re right,” Despite nodding her head, Faye seemed unwilling to give up.
She looked at Jenny and asked, “Dr. Walter, you may not know your type, but certainly you know the type of men you dislike, right? Could you let me know? I don’t want to introduce you to a person you dislike.” Glancing at Alec, Jenny answered calmly, “I don’t like people with the surname Faust.” Instantly, the atmosphere turned frosty.
Alec glared murderously at Jenny, asking, “Why? Does the surname Faust offend you?” “A fortune teller once told me I wouldn’t be compatible with anyone with the surname Faust.” Their issue was more than being incompatible with each other. They got a divorce after two years despite never meeting each other.
Due to the tense atmosphere, Faye felt a little breathless.
“Dr. Walter, did you perhaps have a misunderstanding with Alec?” Only an idiot wouldn’t be able to sense Jenny’s resentment for Alec. But the real question was why did she feel that way?
“You are overthinking. I just don’t like the surname Faust,” Jenny replied.
“Was it because of the rumors, Dr. Walter?” Faye asked as if trying to clear Alec’s name. “Alec is indeed a divorcé, but it’s not his fault.
“His ex-wife is a vulgar country bumpkin, so they were incompatible. Hence, their divorce was inevitable. Please don’t think poorly of Alec because of this, Dr. Walter.” Her tone was full of disdain for Alec’s ex-wife. Little did she know, the ex-wife she was belittling was standing right in front of her and had even saved her life.
Sneering in her heart, Jenny turned to look at Alec, asking, “Do you agree, Mr.
Faust? Do you think of your ex-wife like this?”
To Be Yours Again by Taylor Chapter 10-Not understanding the reason behind Jenny’s taunting tone, Alec answered solemnly, “We were incompatible, so divorce was the best choice.” Incompatible? Jenny sneered secretly. How could he tell they were incompatible when they had never even met once in the two years they were married? It seemed that he never intended to get along with her from the very start. After all, Alec thought his ex-wife was a country bumpkin, unworthy of a man of his status.
Her eyes swept over them as she snorted, “Well, I pity your ex-wife, Mr. Faust.” Then, she left the ward without looking back, refusing to stay with them for a moment longer. Alec and Faye were truly fated to be together, she thought to herself.
However, the moment she stepped out of the ward, someone chased after her.
With his tall, looming figure, Alec stood before Jenny, asking, “Are you angry because I was married before?” “You’re overthinking, Mr. Faust,” she replied, somewhat dumbfounded. “What does your love life have to do with me? I think it concerns the patient in this ward more than it concerns me.” “Why are you bringing Faye into this? What does she have to do with this?” he asked, unable to comprehend what she had just said.
Thinking that he was annoyed that she mentioned Faye, Jenny pouted and said, “Aw, of course, Miss Lawrence has nothing to do with this. I shouldn’t have mentioned her!” He was really protective of his lover, so much so that no one was allowed to even speak about her.
“Stop changing the subject! Why are you angry?” he asked, staring at Jenny, trying to see through her.
Unfortunately for him, Jenny was good at hiding her emotions.
“I’m not angry,” she said. Then, she added, “I just feel that it’s unfair for your exwife, Mr. Faust. Don’t you think it’s embarrassing and frustrating for her to be gossiped about behind her back even after her divorce?” She was, in fact, upset. No one would be happy to hear someone talking about them behind their back.
“I didn’t marry her of my own will, which is why Faye feels upset for me. She doesn’t mean anything else,” Alec explained.
Before Jenny could say anything, he continued, “Although I haven’t met her, I think she’s a good person, but we’re just not compatible.” After all, his ex-wife hadn’t caused him any trouble in the past two years. If she had been a meddling, scheming woman, he would not have had the peace he had for the past two years.
Alas, his explanation did not improve Jenny’s mood. Instead, it worsened her mood.
A good person? Was that all she was after two years of marriage? Who did he think he was to tell her whether she was a good person or not?
Wearing a dark expression, she said coldly, “You don’t need to tell me all that, Mr. Faust. I’m not interested in your personal matters.” She tried to leave, but Alec refused to move aside.
“Excuse me, Mr. Faust. Please get out of my way. I’m swamped,” she said unpleasantly.
Alec’s anger flared. Why was she glaring at him as if he were her enemy and as if he had committed a great crime? It was rare for him to explain himself, yet she was reacting in such a manner.
“Dr. Walter, you should stop playing hard to get. People will only feel disgusted if you do that,” he commented coldly. His meaning was clear. He was giving her a chance, so she shouldn’t be ungrateful.
Jenny was playing hard to get? Hearing that, she was rendered speechless.
Was her resentment toward him not evident enough? Was Alec out of his mind?
She quickly concluded that Alec was mentally impaired.
“Mr. Faust, please check your brain when you have time. Actually, I can arrange a check-up for you right now. After all, we should be wary when the health of our brains is concerned.” “Dr. Walter!” he said through gritted teeth. “Are you saying you’re not playing hard to get?” “I’m not,” she replied without hesitation. “I’m not interested in you, Mr. Faust.
Remember what I said in the ward? I don’t like people with the surname Faust.” With that, Jenny walked away, leaving Alec with his heart flooded with anger, embarrassment, and doubt.
Having confirmed that Jenny was utterly disinterested in him, it meant that her hostile behavior was because she genuinely loathed him. But what was the reason?
From the moment they met, Jenny hardly concealed her dislike of him. He could not recall ever meeting her. Could he have offended her once and then forgotten about it?
With that in mind, he called Vincent, instructing, “Find out what Dr. Walter has been doing in recent years and compare all her activities with mine. I want to know if we have met before.” After he hung up, Alec returned to the ward, where Faye felt a little uneasy when she noticed that Alec seemed upset.
“Alec, Dr. Walter—” “Why did you bring up my divorce?” He looked at her lying on the hospital bed and wondered if she was starting to act out of line because he always allowed her to do as she pleased.
Slightly taken aback, Faye bit her lip as if she had been wronged and replied, “I was just afraid that Dr. Walter might have misunderstood you.” “Really? Isn’t it because you wanted her to know that I was once married?” His tone was rather unpleasant, as if he had seen through her carefully concealed intentions.
“Alec, I…” She wanted to say that that wasn’t the case. However, when she met his gaze, she suddenly realized that she couldn’t hide her thoughts from him.
“Don’t let this happen again. Is that clear?” he asked coldly in a voice that left no room for objection.
Faye nodded.
When he was about to leave, she gritted her teeth and mustered the courage to ask. “Alec, why do you seem to care so much about Dr. Walter?”
