After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 11
#11 “You are so Much Better Off Without Him!”
Alexander and Emily step off the elevator, returning to Stone Enterprise. As they ride up, Alexander finds himself still pondering his curiosity about Sophia Johnson.
Upon reaching their floor, they are greeted by Laura, who stands by the elevator with a stack of papers in her arms.
“I have what you asked for, Mr. Stone,” Laura says, her voice professional and composed. Alexander nods to Emily, telling her he will speak with her later, and walks alongside Laura toward his office. Once inside, he settles into his chair while Laura sits across from him..
“So, tell me, when have Ms. Johnson and I crossed paths during the last five years? There must be some incident or encounter that led to her acting so abhorrently towards me,” Alexander asks.
Laura hands Alexander a neatly organized spreadsheet showcasing his and Sophia’s schedules over the past five years.
“As you can see, there is absolutely no overlap between your events and hers during this time. I even went a step further and explored potential connections through proxies, but again, there’s no evidence of any interaction.”
Alexander furrows his brow as he examines the report. His attention is drawn to a large black empty box in the middle of Sophia’s events.
“What is this?” he asks, pointing to the conspicuous void.
Laura leans forward, “Well, it’s rather peculiar. Sophia Johnson seems to have vanished completely from records for approximately three years. There are no records of any events attended or any other trace during that time.”
“That is indeed bizarre.” Alexander’s curiosity piques.
“I did not dig that deep into that time, though, Mr. Stone. Would you like me to utilize some of our special networks to investigate a bit more?” Laura asks.
Alexander momentarily considers this idea and responds, “For now, let’s put a pin in it. I have more pressing matters to attend to than the whereabouts of Sophia Johnson.”
“Of course, Mr. Stone.” Laura nods.
“Thank you, Laura.” Alexander replies, his voice firm and resolute.
A few days later, Alexander and Emily arrive at Johnson and Associates Law Firm. They are ready to finalize the legal arrangements and sign the final contracts. Sophia greets them cordially as they enter the conference room.
“Good morning, Mr. Stone, Ms. Williams,” Sophia says with a professional smile. “I have all the paperwork ready and labeled where I need signatures.”
“Great,” Emily responds, her voice filled with a touch of relief, while Alexander remains engrossed with something on his phone.
Sophia distributes pens to each of them, flipping through the pages and indicating where each person needs to sign. The process moves swiftly, and once the final signature is marked, Sophia rises from her seat.
“That takes care of it. I’ll have copies sent to you before the end of the day. Shall I walk you to the door?” she offers.
“I’m sure we can find our way,” Alexander dismisses, his attention still fixated on his phone. He and Emily exit the conference room, leaving Sophia behind.
As soon as they are out of Sophia’s sight, she releases a deep sigh, relieved that the process is finally over. She no longer has to deal with Alexander, at least for now.
Alexander and Emily remain silent during their walk to the car. Emily is also relieved that the proceedings with Sophia are over. Now there would be no reason for Sophia Johnson to be an obstacle anymore between herself and Alexander.
It’s only when they are inside the vehicle that Emily musters the courage to speak. “Thank you, Alexander,” Emily says. I’m glad we got this deal done. Now we can focus on our future plans.”
Alexander finally tears his gaze away from his phone, meeting Emily’s eyes momentarily before looking out the window. His tone is serious as he responds.
“Emily, this was a one-time thing. You are a smart and savvy businesswoman, but if you don’t start working more diligently, these mistakes will happen again. I cannot, and will not, continue to clean up your messes. And if you jeopardize my company’s finances, then we will have to part ways.”
Emily tries to interject, wanting to defend herself, but Alexander raises his hand to silence her. She turns her gaze away, staring out of the car window as the city scenery rushes by. She forces herself to hold back tears.

Saturday morning, Sophia and her best friend, Evelyn, stroll into Sunshine Cafe after their invigorating yoga class.
Their bodies still radiate a sense of tranquility as they approach the counter to order their favorite post- workout smoothies. They find a cozy spot on the sidewalk patio with their refreshing beverages in hand.
“So, Ms. Sophia, spill the tea. Did you finally get everything sorted out with that bastard ex-husband of yours?” Evelyn asks eagerly, a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. Sophia sips her smoothie, savoring the fruity goodness before responding.
“For the most part. Honestly, Evelyn, I’m just relieved that it’s all behind me now,” she confesses, a hint of weariness seeping into her voice.
“Cheers to that,” Evelyn exclaims, raising her smoothie cup and clinking it against Sophia’s. “You are so much better off without him! I’ve never encountered a more egotistical, arrogant, money-hungry man in my life.”
Sophia nods in agreement, the corners of her lips curling into a slight smile. ” You’re absolutely right. It’s like he believed he had the right to take everything and leave me with nothing. Disgusting, isn’t it?”
“Seriously, what kind of man thinks that way after three years of marriage? “Evelyn continues her rant, her voice filled with righteous anger.
“Leaving someone high and dry, thinking he deserves it all while she gets nothing. It makes my blood boil! If I ever cross paths with that piece of crap, he won’t know what hit him!”
Sophia chuckles at Evelyn’s fiery determination, enjoying her friend’s unwavering loyalty. But as the laughter subsides, a gasp escapes her lips, and her eyes widen in surprise.
Standing near the tiny railing separating the cafe patio from the bustling sidewalk is Alexander. Dressed impeccably in jogging attire, he stretches his calves with unwavering focus; his gaze fixed unwaveringly on Sophia.
“Is it? And how exactly would you hit him?”
With a small smile on his lips and sarcasm dripping from his words, Alexander comments. He had overheard every word the two women had spoken about him.

#12 “Do You Think He’ll Hold A Grudge?”
Alexander, unable to resist the temptation, approaches Sophia and Evelyn at the café patio. With a half- joking, half-intimidating tone, he addresses them.
“Well, well, well, if it isn’t the two ladies discussing their disdain for a certain someone,” Alexander remarks, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation. Evelyn, wasn’t it? I must say, I’m quite intrigued by your strong opinions about this ‘egotistical, arrogant, money-hungry man.”
Evelyn’s eyes widen as she recognizes Alexander. She stammers, “Oh… uh… Mr. Stone, I didn’t realize it was you. It was all in good fun, you know, just venting with Sophia here.”
Sophia, maintaining her composure, leans back in her chair and smirks.
“You should be flattered, Alexander. I am sure you know that Evelyn’s father owns a bank that heavily relies on Stone Enterprises. I’m sure he’d be interested to hear your reaction to his daughter’s colorful assessment of men. Alexander chuckles, his gaze alternating between Sophia and Evelyn.
“Is that so? Well, Evelyn, I hope your father has a good sense of humor. I’ll make sure to remember your spirited remarks. Who knows, it might spice up our business negotiations in the future.
“Mr. Stone, please, it was just a casual conversation. I didn’t mean any harm.” Evelyn’s face turns beet red as she tries to play down the situation. Alexander leans in closer, his tone shifting to a more serious but still playful one.
“Oh, I know, Evelyn. No need to worry. I always appreciate the honest feedback, even if it comes with a touch of colorful language. Just remember, though, words have a way of lingering in one’s memory.”
Sophia can’t help but chuckle at the exchange, finding it both amusing and surreal.
“Well, Alexander, it seems we have a mutual understanding now. Perhaps it’s best for us to leave it at that and focus on our respective endeavors.” Alexander straightens up, a glimmer of amusement in his eyes.
“Agreed, Sophia. Let’s keep our interactions strictly professional. I have no intention of letting personal history cloud our business relationship. But being the gentleman I am, I would like to offer you, ladies, a ride to wherever you may be going.”
Sophia raises an eyebrow, exchanging a quick glance with Evelyn before responding, “I think we are okay, Mr. Stone.”
Alexander’s expression turns slightly colder as he replies curtly, “Fine.”
Tipping his imaginary hat, he swiftly jogs off, leaving Sophia and Evelyn to process the encounter. They sit there, bewildered, their gazes following his departure as they silently contemplate the unexpected turn of events.
Evelyn breaks the silence, whispering to Sophia, her voice filled with awe.
“Wow, that was intense. I can’t believe I had a face-to-face encounter with him. Honestly, I’m surprised at how gentlemanly he was. Do you think he’ll hold a grudge?”
Sophia raises an eyebrow, intrigued by Evelyn’s concern.
“What do you mean, hold a grudge?” she questions. Evelyn’s anxiety becomes apparent as she explains, “Like, do you think he will tell my dad? Stone Enterprises is one of my dad’s bank’s biggest clients. They heavily depend on that business.”
Sophia ponders for a moment before confidently responding.
“Alexander loves money. Telling your father might cost him money, so I highly doubt he will be so petty as to hold a grudge.”
Evelyn nods in agreement, a sense of relief washing over her. “True,” she concedes, “but we have to talk about the fact that he does not have the slightest idea that YOU are his ex-wife. How is that even possible?”
Sophia’s gaze drifts off momentarily, lost in memories. “I never saw him,” she admits.
“Never?” Evelyn asks incredulously. Sophia shakes her head. “Never. It was a marriage on paper only.” A mischievous smile plays on Evelyn’s lips as she continues, “You know what else is weird?” Curious, Sophia leans in and asks, ” What?”
Evelyn lowers her voice, her with amusement. eyes filled “I just saw him walk into that building down the street. You and your ex- husband live on the same block.”
Sophia’s heart skips a beat as a mix of emotions washes over her. She turns to look at the building Evelyn is pointing at, her mind racing.
“I think,” Evelyn leans in closer, whispering conspiratorially, “this is the universe’s way of trying to get the two of you back together. I’m betting you and him will be kissy-kissy before too long.”
Sophia bursts into laughter, realizing that Evelyn is poking fun at the situation. She playfully nudges her friend and replies, “Oh please, as if that would ever happen. The universe has a twisted sense of humor, but I’m not falling for it.”
*
Later that afternoon, Sophia is immersed in her office work, the warm sunlight streaming through the window. Her cell phone buzzes, and she answers cheerfully upon seeing Evelyn’s name on the screen.
“Hi, Love!” Sophia greets her friend.
“No, no happiness,” Evelyn’s voice responds frantically, filled with concern.
“What’s wrong?” Sophia inquires, her voice laced with worry.
“I just got off the phone with my father. Alexander is going to withdraw all his company’s deposits from the bank. Do you know what that means, Sophia?” Evelyn’s voice trembles with tears. “It means that it might possibly cause the bankruptcy of his bank!”
Sophia’s heart sinks as she comprehends the gravity of the situation. How could he do this? “Hold on, let me call Alexander at his office.” Her mind races with questions, but she focuses on comforting Evelyn.
Sophia swiftly dials Alexander’s number from her office phone, her anxiety growing with each unanswered ring. It goes directly to voicemail. She tries again, but Alexander once again sends her to voicemail.
“This is my fault, Evelyn. I’ll go over there and speak to him directly,” Sophia declares, determination in her voice, as she starts making her way toward the elevator.
“I’ll meet you there,” Evelyn responds, her voice still shaky. Both women arrive at Stone Enterprises in record time. Evelyn’s tear -stained face and Sophia’s guilt-ridden expression display the weight of the situation as they approach the receptionist’s desk.
“Excuse me; we need to see Alexander Stone,” Evelyn pleads, her voice trembling. The receptionist raises an eyebrow, Mr. Stone does not have appointments today,” she informs them.
Sophia insists, “Please, can you tell him that Ms. Sophia Johnson and Ms. Evelyn Crimms are here to see him? I’m sure he will see us.
The receptionist’s expression softens slightly, sensing the urgency in Sophia’s plea. She nods and heads towards Alexander’s office. Sophia turns to Evelyn, offering a reassuring smile. “I’ll take care of this, I promise,” she assures her best friend. Moments later, the receptionist returns with a somber expression.
“I’m sorry, but Mr. Stone does not wish to see either of you. He has asked me to tell you to leave immediately.”
After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 13
#13 “He is Going to Bankrupt Them.
“No! This is an emergency. Please,” Sophia pleads. She can’t bear the weight of the situation, knowing how much she needs to fix it for her best friend.
Feeling a twinge of sympathy for Sophia, the receptionist tries to deliver her words as warmly as possible.
“I really am sorry, but Mr. Stone has left for some urgent business issues. He’s meeting with a client later this evening.”
Sophia’s heart sinks, her hope fading away. She turns to Evelyn, the devastation evident on her face, mirroring the consequence of the situation.
“This is entirely my fault, Evelyn. I take complete responsibility for it, and I will fix it,” Sophia declares with determination as they make their way back to the elevator.
Meanwhile, in Alexander’s office, Laura finishes up her paperwork. She couldn’t help but overhear the conversation between Alexander and the receptionist, and her curiosity gets the better of her.
“What’s going on?” Laura asks, curious but also concerned. With an unsympathetic look, Alexander responds, “I have decided to transfer the money from Crimms’ bank to the business of Emily’s branch company, StoneTech Solutions.”
Laura’s eyebrows shoot up in surprise, her mind racing to comprehend the implications of Alexander’s decision. She begins to push for further details, but Alexander dismisses her from the office, shutting the door behind her.
As Sophia and Evelyn exit the elevator, the weight of the situation still heavy on their shoulders, an idea suddenly sparks in Sophia’s mind. “Steven!” she exclaims, her voice filled with renewed hope.
“Who?” Evelyn responds. But before Sophia can answer, she swiftly dials a number on her phone, her finger raised to Evelyn as she waits for a response.
“Steven Mhyler, please. Yes, I’ll hold,” Sophia says, her voice determined. While on hold, she turns to Evelyn, a glimmer of excitement in her blue eyes.
“Steven is Alexander’s lawyer. I am going to see if he will meet with me. That way, I can get more information about what is really going on… Yes, I am here. Thank you.”
Evelyn gazes at Sophia, impressed by her quick thinking and feeling a flicker of optimism for the first time that day. Sophia continues her phone conversation, her tone focused and determined.
“Hi Steven, it’s Sophia Johnson. How are you?… Good to hear. Look, I have a few items I need to discuss with you. Is there a time we can meet? The sooner, the better… Yes, it is imperative that we meet today… Tonight at 7:00 at Bistro 45 would be perfect… It’s good to hear from you as well… I will see you then.” Sophia ends the call, a little smile crossing her face as she takes a moment to relish in her progress.
She turns to Evelyn, embracing her in a hug filled with sincerity. “I cannot tell you how sorry I am for all of this, but I promise I will fix it!” Sophia reassures her best friend.
Seeing a glimmer of hope in Sophia’s perseverance, Evelyn eases up and releases from the hug. “But how is talking to Mr. Mhyler going to fix anything?” she asks.
“Just trust me, Evelyn,” Sophia replies with conviction. At precisely 7:00, Sophia steps into the warm ambiance of Bistro 45. Despite her nerves, she maintains a composed exterior. The hostess guides her to a table where Steven is already waiting for her.
“Sophia,” Steven says, rising to greet her with a warm smile. “It is a pleasure to meet you face to face finally.”
“Sophia,” Steven says, rising to greet her with a warm smile. “It is a pleasure to meet you face to face finally.
Sophia smiles back at Steven, “Yes, it’s nice to put a face to the voice. I appreciate all the work you’ve done in helping Alexander and me with our divorce. I must admit that I have grown a great respect for you after all the work you did for us.”
As they both take their seats, Steven can’t help but be overwhelmed by Sophia’s beauty and presence and wonder why Alexander would ever want to divorce a woman such as her.
Quickly gaining his composure, “No need for thanks, I was just doing my job. But I must say, you’re not what I expected.”
“Oh? What did you expect?” A small smile crosses Sophia’s face; she questions with a raised eyebrow. Steven shifts uncomfortably in his seat, embarrassed by what he had thought..
Looking down at his glass of wine, he shyly responds, “Well, there were rumors that Alexander’s ex-wife was… not well off. But clearly, you’re not.”
“Rumors can be misleading,” Sophia responds with a light chuckle, immediately lightening the mood.Looking back up into Sophia’s crystal blue eyes, Steven takes a breath of relief, happy he had not offended her.
“I apologize, but I’ll have to make this brief,” Steven says, “I have a client coming in to meet me later.”
“Of course,” Sophia responds, her blue eyes sparkling in the intimate candlelight of the restaurant. “I’ll make this quick.” She reaches into her vintage Louis Vuitton bag and pulls out the contract that Alexander had signed, placing it before Steven.
“I am having an issue with Mr. Stone.” Steven takes the contract, his eyes scanning the document. “And I assume he has breached this contract?” he remarks.
As Steven flips through the contract, he immediately notices it is a contract between Stone Enterprise and Johnson and Associates Law Firm, not one from the divorce arrangement as he had expected. Confused, he asks, “Where did you get this contract? Are you a lawyer? From Johnson and Associates?”
Sophia nods, waiting patiently for Steven to connect the dots. Steven looks down at the contract again and then back up at Sophia. His eyes widen, shocked he replies, “Wait a minute… You’re Sophia Johnson? Alexander’s legal advisor?”
Sophia nods again and takes a sip of water, “Yes, I am.”
Momentarily speechless, Steven takes a gulp of his wine. The reality of the situation beginning to settle on him, “I had no idea… You’re even more… impressive in person.” The words stumble from Steven.
With a gracious smile, Sophia replies, Thank you, Steven. It’s always nice to exceed expectations.”
After the initial shock weans away from Steven, a different emotion take hold of him. He begins to worry about what such a formidable lawyer is intending to do with Alexander.
Sophia motions back to the contract. Yes, Mr. Stone has breached that contract,” Sophia confirms, irritation creeping into her reply.
“He has decided to withdraw all of his capital from Crimms’ bank, which happens to be my best friend Evelyn’s father’s company. And as you can see there, he has signed, agreeing not to cause any financial harm to any of my clients. He is going to bankrupt them.”
Steven finishes reading the contract, handing it back to Sophia. “I’m sorry, Ms. Johnson, but my hands are tied in this situation.”
“What do you mean? There is nothing you can do?” she implores, no longer attempting to hide her frustration. Exasperation washes over Sophia.
“Alexander’s actions are considered a normal business activity, and at this point, the decision to withdraw the deposits cannot be changed.” Steven gazes at Sophia, a sense of regret in his eyes.
Sophia lets out a weary sigh, feeling the weight of the situation pressing down. on her. She looks at Steven, her eyes pleading for a trace of hope.
“But,” Steven continues, his voice slightly softer, “I can tell you something. I do know that the decision to withdraw the money has nothing to do with Evelyn.”
Before Sophia can respond, Steven’s phone buzzes, interrupting their conversation. “Excuse me,” he states politely, stepping away from the table to answer the call. Sophia watches as he engages in a brief conversation.
Returning to the table, Steven addresses Sophia. “I apologize, Ms. Johnson, but that was actually your ex- husband on the phone. He is bringing a client to meet with me, and he is just a few minutes away from arriving.”
Sophia nods, understanding the situation and accepting that Alexander’s decision to withdraw the money cannot be changed. She rises from her seat, a mix of gratitude and disappointment evident on her face.
She extends her hand to Steven, shaking it firmly. “Thank you for your time and input. I genuinely appreciate it,” she says sincerely.
“As you can imagine, I have no desire to be here when Mr. Stone arrives, so I am going to leave.”
Steven reciprocates the handshake; his gaze filled with sympathy. “I understand. Take care, Ms. Johnson. If there’s anything else I can do to assist you, please don’t hesitate to reach out.’
Sophia offers a faint smile, grateful for his support. “I will keep that in mind. Goodbye, Mr. Mhyler.”
With that, Sophia swiftly makes her exit from the restaurant, her mind already racing with thoughts of what she can do next to protect Evelyn.
After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 14
#14 “This Incident Ends Here.”
Before reaching the door, Sophia’s determined footsteps come to a halt. With a sense of urgency, she walks back to Steven, who curious smile. greets her with a “One more thing, Mr. Mhyler,” she says.
Steven leans in attentively. “Of course, go ahead.’
“It is crucial that you do not mention to Mr. Stone that we met today,” Sophia asserts, her eyes locked with Steven’s. ” And please, do not reveal my true identity to him. I am warning you it would be bad for everyone!”
Confused by her request, Steven raises an eyebrow. “Ms. Johnson, you are putting me in a very tricky situation.”
Sophia leans closer, her voice almost a whisper, “I realize that Mr. Mhyler, and I am sorry about that; however the best decision you can make is to stay silent.” “But, Ms. Johnson…”
Sophia cuts him off, “Steven, it is imperative that this stays between you and me. This is not a request.”
Uncomfortable with the demand, but realizing he does not have a choice. Steven relectuanly replies, “Your secret is safe with me.”
Sophia nods gratefully. She turns again towards the door, eager to leave. The once-crowded lobby of the restaurant has become even more packed with patrons, making it difficult to navigate. In her haste, she overlooks Alexander and Emily as they make their way through the crowd, their eyes fixed on her.
“What do you suppose she is doing here?” Emily whispers to Alexander, curiosity in her voice as they approach Steven.
Alexander, his gaze fixed on Sophia as she walks out the door, slows his steps and replies, “I have no idea. I am just as surprised as you are to see her.”
However, as realization dawns upon him, he abruptly stops, his expression shifting to comprehension. He knows precisely why Sophia Johnson was there.
Steven rises from his seat, his composure all business. He meets Alexander’s piercing gaze. Emily, caught in the crossfire, shifts uncomfortably, her eyes darting between the two men. “What in the hell were you doing here with Sophia Johnson?” Alexander angrily spits out.
Steven begins, his voice shaky,” Alexander, I understand your concerns, but I assure you it is nothing of urgency.”
Alexander’s anger shows no signs of abating as the trio takes their seats at the table. Alexander leans back in his chair, his arms crossed tightly. “I find it hard to believe that this was a mere casual discussion. There must be more to it.”
“I assure you, Mr. Stone, there is nothing more to it,” Steven says, trying to convenience himself as much as Alexander.
“The conversation revolved around the movement of funds from the Crimms’ bank to Emily’s, which, as I informed Ms. Johnson, cannot be reversed now. It was a brief and straightforward exchange.”
For a moment Steven considers telling Alexander the true identity of Sophia, but he quickly reconsiders. The fallout would have devastating consequences for not only Stone Enterprises, but for his own job as well. “Tell me, Steven,” Alexander’s voice drips with controlled anger.
“How can I not consider the meeting with Ms. Johnson as a breach of trust? In fact, as far as I can tell, it seems like an act of revealing insider information. It is completely unacceptable.”
Steven shifts uncomfortably in his seat. Alexander’s anger is palpable. Steven hesitates again for a moment, weighing his options. He knows the consequences of revealing the truth and the potential fallout it could bring. But he also recognizes Sophia’s plea for confidentiality.
With a calculated decision, Steven responds, “Alexander. I assure you there was nothing inappropriate or revealing about the conversation.”
Alexander’s gaze intensifies, searching for any signs of deception. Satisfied for now, he leans back in his chair, his tone resolute. “Very well. Just remember, Steven, I will not tolerate further involvement or communication with Ms. Johnson. This incident ends here.”
Steven nods, his expression neutral. He understands the severity of the situation and the weight of Alexander’s words.
“One more thing Steven,” Alexander continues. However, his wrath is starting to ease, “I want a letter drafted tonight to all employees of Stone Enterprises terminating all collaboration with Crimms’ bank. And be sure to CC the bank on it as well.”

Once Sophia reaches her apartment, she feels the weight of her meeting with Steven lingering in her mind. She sees Evelyn, seeking refuge from the storm brewing in her own life at home with her parents, perched on the plush couch, savoring the rich crimson liquid in her wine glass.
Turning her gaze towards Sophia, Evelyn’s eyes shimmer with both anxiety and curiosity. She’s eager to hear the details of the encounter with Steven, desperate for a glimmer of hope amid the turmoil.
Joining Evelyn on the couch, Sophia pours herself a generous portion of wine. She releases a heavy sigh, allowing the tension to escape before venturing into the discussion.
“I’m almost afraid to ask how it went,” Evelyn ventures, her voice betraying her anticipation. Realizing that divulging the full extent of the conversation wouldn’t serve Evelyn well, Sophia decides to approach it cautiously, opting for a veil of ambiguity.
“Well, I met with Steven Mhyler, Alexander’s attorney, tonight,” Sophia begins, her words punctuated by the occasional sip from her glass. “I had him examine a contract that Alexander had signed.”
Unaware of the existence of a contract and delighted by Sophia’s legal insight, Evelyn leans forward, her curiosity piqued. “Contract? What contract? I had no idea there was anything like that.”
Sensing she may have unintentionally kindled a false flame of hope, Sophia swiftly attempts to amend her statement. “Actually, it’s more related to my divorce, but I thought maybe Steven could glean some insights into Alexander’s mindset from it.”
“And?” Evelyn presses eagerly, her eyes fixed on Sophia, searching for a trace of positive news.
“Well, it’s a mixed bag,” Sophia responds, her voice carefully crafted to balance reassurance and concern. “But rest assured Evelyn, I will find a way to help you. I’m confident in my abilities.”
Observing Evelyn’s expression shift from apprehension to relief, Sophia conceals her own mounting anxiety. Though her heart is heavy with worry, she refuses to burden Evelyn with her fears.
“You truly are the best friend one could ask for, Sophia,” Evelyn exclaims. She embraces Sophia tightly, “Thank you for everything. Now I think I am going to take a hot bath and go to sleep.”
Sophia watches Evelyn disappear down the hallway, her mind still consumed by the weight of the situation. She takes another sip of her wine, trying to steady her thoughts.
Alone in the living room, Sophia contemplates her next move. The meeting with Steven had not delivered the desired result, leaving her feeling even more committed to finding a solution. She reaches for her laptop, ready to dive into research and devise a plan that could potentially save Evelyn’s father’s company.
As the soft glow of the screen illuminates her face, Sophia becomes engrossed in the world of financial transactions, corporate strategies, and legal loopholes. Hours pass, marked only by the occasional click of her mouse and the keyboard tapping. Determined to help her best friend, Sophia knows she must devise a plan, but she has to be careful and not make things worse.
After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 15
#15 “Where are We Regarding A Proposal?”
Once Alexander had made the directive about terminating all collaboration with Crimms, his mood appeared to lighten. However, Steven couldn’t shake off the unease that lingered within him.
“However, that is not the original reason I wanted to meet,” Alexander responded. “I have a new client I need you to meet with.”
Emily’s eyes darted towards the door, a playful smile spreading across her face. “They’re here!” she exclaimed, excitement evident in her voice.
As the couple approached the table, Alexander eagerly extended his hand and vigorously shook the man’s hand, his enthusiasm apparent. On the other hand, the woman let out a cheerful laugh and pulled Alexander into a warm embrace.
“Steven Mhyler, this is Daniel and Barbara Williams, Emily’s parents,” Alexander introduced a sense of dignity in his voice. The air filled with a flurry of greetings, hellos, and friendly handshakes, while everyone settled down at the table.
“What can I get you all to drink?” the waiter asked, breaking the pleasant buzz of excitement filling the air.
Once the wine arrived and Alexander offered a charming toast, the atmosphere shifted from casual chatter to the business at hand. Alexander wasted no time and dived straight into the heart of the meeting.
“Steven, as you know, we have withdrawn all our funds from Crimms International Bank and Savings,” Alexander stated. Steven nodded nervously, the memory of his conversation with Sophia just before Alexander’s arrival still fresh in his mind.
“Well, the next step is to move that money into Barbara’s bank,” Alexander continued, his gaze unwavering.
The Williams exchanged smiles, their appreciation evident, but Steven couldn’t shake off his growing concern. He knew better than to question Alexander, especially in front of other people, but the weight of apprehension continued to rise within him.
Sitting beside Alexander, Daniel reached over and patted him on the back. “Alex, you and your family have always been so good to us. To say we appreciate this is an understatement.”
Barbara nodded in agreement, her hand reaching out to grasp Alexander’s. “Yes, this will truly go a long way in supporting our plans. But,” she trailed off, her voice hinting at an underlying request.
Alexander raised an eyebrow, sensing that there was more to their gratitude. He was aware of the Williams’ inclination towards greed, but he had assumed that the substantial amount of money he invested would satisfy them.
“But?” Alexander prompted. Barbara took a moment, her eyes meeting Alexander’s. “We are going to need an additional investment to see our potential business proposal through,” she finally revealed, her tone laced with expectation.
Emily’s face flushed with embarrassment as she attempted to intervene. “Mom, Alexander has already made a significant investment. I think that-”
Before she could finish her sentence, Emily’s mother swiftly cut her off, her voice stern, “Emily, please do not speak on matters you do not understand.”
Silence fell upon the table, tension thickening as everyone awaited Alexander’s response.
“Of course, Mrs. Williams, anything you need,” Alexander responded smoothly, maintaining his composed demeanor. He glanced at Steven and continued, “Now, if you will excuse Steven and me for a few moments, I have some private matters to discuss with him.”
As Steven and Alexander left the table, Barbara shifted her full attention to her daughter. “Where are we regarding a proposal?” she asked. Her voice filled with more exasperation than concern.
Still feeling the sting of embarrassment from her parents’ behavior and scolding, Emily gibed in response. “We are nowhere, Mom. I told you that.”
Barbara’s tone grew more insistent.” Ridiculous, Emily. You’re an attractive woman; Alexander is divorced. I don’t see the issue. Are you even trying? I mean, look at your dress! There’s absolutely no cleavage showing. How will you ever seduce him if you dress like that?” She waved her hand dismissively as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
Daniel, taking a gentler approach, interjected, “Emily, you know how important it is for you to get Alexander to propose to you. Maybe just try a little harder, smile more, and compliment him. Men love that. And even if you aren’t in love with him now, those emotions can grow over time.”
Emily looked up from the table, her eyes filled with tears of frustration. ” The thing is, I do love Alex. I love him madly. That’s not the issue.”
“Then what is it, darling?” Barbara inquired, genuinely curious.
“It’s you two,” Emily confessed, her voice wavering. “I can’t bear the way you act in front of him. You just received more money than any person could ever imagine, and what do you do? You ask for more.” Her words came out in a rush, tears starting to spill down her cheeks.
“Nonsense, Emily,” Barbara dismissed her daughter’s concerns with a wave. Alexander is a businessman. He understands that money makes the world go round. Plus, that amount of money is a drop in the ocean to him. Please, you’re being silly.”
“Alexander is not like that,” Emily asserted defiantly. She looked up and caught sight of Alexander and Steven walking back toward their table.
Quickly, she added, her voice filled with worry, “My concern is that the more you push for money, the less Alexander will want me.”
As the two men approached, Emily’s eyes pleaded for understanding from her parents, silently hoping they would change their ways for her relationship with Alexander. Steven and Alexander returned to their seats with smiles on their faces.
However, as Alexander pulled his chair out, he noticed a green Gucci Marmont card case wallet lying on the floor. His intuition immediately told him it belonged to Sophia. He swiftly picked it up, intending to return it to her the following day, and discreetly slipped it into his suit pocket.
With a warm smile, Alexander addressed the table, his voice filled with finality, “We are all officially off the clock. No more business tonight!”
*
Having barely slept, Sophia made sure to wake up before Evelyn. She wanted to be there for her best friend and offer as much comfort as possible. Sophia prepared her famous Nutella French Toast and had her coffee pot ready, waiting for Evelyn to emerge from the guest bedroom.
The room had a thick layer of anxiety as the two sat down for breakfast. It was evident that Evelyn had spent most of the night in tears.
“Evelyn, I truly believe we can find a way through this,” Sophia began, her voice filled with determination. “Look at us,” she continued, a twinkle of confidence in her eyes, “We are smart, sexy, badass bitches! There is nothing we can’t do!”
“Especially when it comes to some stupid man, right?” Evelyn laughed in agreement, a touch of relief breaking through her sadness.
“Right!” Sophia exclaimed, her smile growing wider. They clinked their coffee cups together, their spirits lifted as they enjoyed breakfast in a more relaxed atmosphere.
After Evelyn left for work, Sophia took a shower and prepared herself for the day ahead. Although she still felt worried, she decided to wear one of her Dolce & Gabbana Carretto-print poplin dresses. It was a small way to boost her confidence. She might not feel fantastic on the inside, but she damn sure looked incredible on the outside.
As she walked through the revolving door of her apartment building, the warmth of the sunshine brought a genuine smile to her face.
Contemplating whether she should take a leisurely walk to work to enjoy the beautiful weather, her gaze upon Alexander entering the fell apartment building directly across the street from her own.

#16 “This Really is A Peculiar Situation, Isn’t It?”
As Sophia stands in front of her apartment building, watching Alexander starting to walk into his, her heart jumps as he turns and looks directly at her. Frozen with whether or not to acknowledge him or ignore him, he decides for her.
“Sophia!” Alexander shouts, dodging cars like a player in his own version of Frogger to cross the busy street. When he finally reached her, Sophia couldn’t help but smile. “Mr. Stone, I had no idea we were neighbors,” she said, attempting a flirty laugh that came out more as an awkward chuckle.
“It would appear so,” Alexander replied, pulling out her green Gucci Marmont card case wallet from his suit pocket. “I believe this belongs to you. I found it at Bistro 45 last night. I was going to have it messengered over to you today, but this takes something off my to-do list.”
Alexander hands Sophia the wallet and turns to leave. Nervously, she places her hand on his shoulder, stopping him. Filled with anxiety, she musters the courage to ask, “Mr. Stone, I was hoping for just a quick moment of your time.”
Alexander turns and looks at her, his green eyes shining with a glint of gold in the morning sunshine. He nods, indicating for her to continue.
“Okay, well, um,” Sophia stammers, gathering her thoughts. “You are owed an apology. What my friend said was inexcusable, and I am so sorry. She didn’t mean any harm; she’s just… umm… feisty and protective. But honestly, on behalf of my best friend, I deeply apologize for her behavior.”
Taking a deep breath, Sophia raises her eyes to meet Alexander’s gaze. His face was impenetrable, and she anxiously awaited his response. Alexander locks eyes with her, and a gentle smile spreads across his tanned face.
“Well, isn’t this interesting,” he begins. “Just a few days ago, you treated me like I was the most despicable, vile person in the world, and now you’re practically begging me for forgiveness.”
Sophia’s mind raced. He wasn’t going to bend, and she realized she might have misjudged the situation.
With sarcasm dripping in his voice, Alexander continues, his smile unwavering. “This really is a peculiar situation, isn’t it, Ms. Johnson?”
Sophia’s grip tightens on the wallet in her hand, panic threatening to consume her. Maybe Mr. Mhyler hadn’t heeded her warning and had revealed her true identity to Alexander. “Look, I don’t know what Mr. Mhyler might have told you, but…”
Alexander cuts her off, his voice laced with superiority. “Ah, yes, Steven Mhyler. I must admit, I’m rather impressed by your wide range of network connections. Mr. Mhyler is a very influential lawyer, and most people must make an appointment with him months in advance. I’m frankly surprised you were even able to meet with MY lawyer,” he emphasizes the possessive “my.”
Relief washes over Sophia like a wave. If Steven had indeed disclosed her secret, this conversation would have taken a drastically different turn. But the relief quickly subsides as she notices the bitterness forming on Alexander’s face.
“The thing is, Ms. Johnson,” Alexander begins, his voice loaded with power, you need to understand that Steven is MY lawyer, and so he will do as I tell him. I have made my decisions on… matters… and those matters will hold.”
He pauses, his eyes narrowing. “What was it that Michael Corleone said? ‘It’s nothing personal; it’s strictly business.'” Sophia’s mind races as she considers Alexander’s response.
“Nothing personal?” she thinks, her brows furrowing. It became clear to her instantly that her investigation with Steven had angered Alexander, and he had no intention of sparing Evelyn’s father’s bank. The realization hardened her resolve.
Sensing Sophia’s unease, Alexander turns a warm smile toward her, hoping to convey his intentions. He takes a step closer, attempting to bridge the gap between them. But instead of returning the smile, Sophia takes a deliberate and exaggerated step backward, creating distance between them. Disappointment quickly clouds Alexander’s expression.
Refusing to let Alexander think he has gained the upper hand, Sophia locks eyes with him, her voice steady and measured.
“To me, Mr. Stone, my business is always personal, especially in this case, “she states firmly. “And I think you will agree, particularly when I begin to exploit some legal loopholes in the subsidiary StoneTech Solutions. Which, if I’m not mistaken, is Emily’s company.”
Alexander, taken aback by Sophia’s revelation, instinctively steps back. His anxiety seeping into his words. “What are you talking about? We closed all those loopholes.”
Sophia maintains her unwavering gaze, a triumphant smile playing on her lips. “Did we?” she asked, her voice dripping with confidence.
Noticing the shift in Alexander’s demeanor, Sophia feels a surge of satisfaction. She turns to leave, but she swiftly moves back towards him. Close enough that he can catch a whiff of the light, alluring fragrance of her Chanel Les Exclusifs Gardenia.
Sophia leans in, her eyes captivating as she whispers seductively, “You know, Mr. Stone, I love The Godfather too. But my favorite quote is spoken by Calo. Do you know which one that is? No?”
She paused, relishing in the moment. Calo says it, ‘Women are more dangerous than shotguns.””
With that final declaration, Sophia vanishes into a waiting cab, leaving Alexander alone on the bustling sidewalk, his thoughts in turmoil.
Sophia hurriedly rummages through her purse in the back of the cab, finally retrieving her phone. As she unlocks it, she notices an alarming number of missed calls from Evelyn.
Panic grips her heart, and she dials her friend’s number without wasting a second. Before Sophia could even utter a greeting, Evelyn’s voice erupts from the other end of the line, filled with desperation.
“Soph, it’s worse than we ever imagined! Alexander has unleashed havoc by sending a memo to all his employees, demanding immediate termination of the partnership with my father’s bank! Can you believe it? If he goes through with this, it will cause a catastrophic run on the bank. The consequences would be devastating- we’ll be left with insufficient cash reserves to maintain normal operations. It’s a sure path to bankruptcy!”
The anguish and tears in Evelyn’s words reverberate through the phone, jolting Sophia to the core. She knew she had to act swiftly to prevent this disaster from unfolding. Ideas whirl in her mind, desperately seeking a solution. Then, like a lightning bolt, inspiration strikes her.
“Evelyn, I might have a possible solution,” Sophia says, her voice brimming with newfound hope.
“I’m going to reach out to Benjamin Thompson. I have a feeling he’ll be able to help us out of this situation.”

#17 “This is Going to Be A Disaster.”
Sophia’s morning at work flew by, keeping her mind occupied and leaving little time to dwell on her situation with Evelyn. However, as soon as she could break free for lunch, she practically sprinted out of the office doors. Eager to avoid the looming dark clouds in the sky, she felt a surge of gratitude for having asked her personal assistant, Trevor, to bring her car to work that day.
As she walked briskly around the corner, seeking out her parked Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato-a cherished gift from her late grandfather- Sophia’s eyes were drawn to a stunning Cadillac Escalade.
Oddly enough, the Escalade was parked directly behind her car in the nearly empty parking lot. A gentle honk and the roll-down of a window caught her attention.
“Well, if it isn’t the stunning Ms. Sophia Johnson,” Benjamin Thompson’s voice rang out, his head materializing from the Escalade’s window.
Sophia’s face lit up with an uncontrollable smile. Seeing her dear friend from their shared childhood in Europe always brought joy to her day.
Waving her over to his car, Benjamin waited as Sophia gracefully made her way to the passenger seat. “Benjamin,” she greeted him with a quick kiss on both cheeks, “it’s so wonderful to see you again! But what brings you here to the States?”
Navigating the car from the parking lot and into the bustling traffic, Benjamin replied, “The moment we hung up the phone, I booked a flight from Zurich to here.”
“You really didn’t have to go through all that trouble, Benjamin,” Sophia expressed her gratitude.
“Of course I did. But more importantly, I believe I have a plan,” Benjamin stated confidently, expertly maneuvering through the traffic flow.
Sophia looked at him curiously as he continued. “Once you told me about the money transfer from Evelyn’s bank, I knew exactly what I had to do.”
Sophia interjected, concerned, “I don’t want to worsen matters for anyone.”
Turning to face Sophia, his brown eyes shaded by his long, boyish eyelashes, Benjamin spoke earnestly, “Hear me out-I had already planned to diversify the location of my company’s funds. What if I simply invest that money into Evelyn’s father’s bank?”
Sophia paused, contemplating the proposition. Benjamin had always been like a little brother to her, and she didn’t want him to make any decisions that might harm his business.
“Are you sure it’s a wise financial move? ” she asked. A stubborn look crossed Benjamin’s face. “Transferring funds back to the US has always been part of my strategy. My company has long anticipated expansion into the US, and this opportunity feels like the perfect fit.” business
Sophia opened her mouth to speak again, but Benjamin cut her off gently, “It’s already done. As soon as I landed, I went straight to the bank. Yes, it might be a bit ahead of schedule, but come on, Sophia, it’s you. You know I’ll always do whatever I can to help you.”

As Sophia and Benjamin stepped into Saffron & Silk, the newest and most exclusive restaurant in town, they were led to a table by a grand bay window that offered a breathtaking view of the serene water beyond.
They both decided to indulge in the renowned Wagyu burgers, complemented by a bottle of the exquisite Domaine de la Rochette Pinot Noir. With their lunch served and glasses filled, they delved into the pressing matter at hand.
“I can’t wrap my head around Alexander’s motives. Why move the money? And why instruct his entire company to sever all ties?” Benjamin contemplated, swirling his wine thoughtfully. Sophia’s face wrinkled with apprehension. “I’ve been racking my brain over that for days.”
“Alexander is a brilliant businessman. There has to be a reason. There must be some method behind his madness,” Benjamin mused.
“That’s precisely it, Ben,” Sophia replied, gazing out the window as if searching for answers. “Alexander Stone doesn’t do anything without purpose. Every move he makes is calculated to serve himself. He wouldn’t have made such a decision unless it solely benefited him.”
“And if it brings harm to others, it’s just an added bonus,” Benjamin added.
“There must be someone else who’s benefiting from this maneuver. If only we could uncover where the funds are actually going, we could expose the truth,” Sophia reflected, taking a long sip of her wine.
Just as the words left Sophia’s lips, Benjamin’s gaze shifted toward the entrance. Curiosity piqued, Sophia turned in her seat, and her heart sank.
Walking through the restaurant’s doors were none other than Alexander, Emily, and Steven-the very individuals at the center of their conversation.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Sophia whispered to Benjamin. “Let’s just avoid eye contact. Maybe they won’t even notice us.”
“Too late,” Benjamin replied, clinking his wine glass against Sophia’s.
Alexander, Emily, and Steven maneuvered through the bustling restaurant, making their way toward Sophia’s table. With an air of false enthusiasm, Emily led the way while the two men trailed hesitantly behind.
Emily’s voice rose higher than necessary as they approached, attracting unwanted attention. “Sophia Johnson, it feels like I see you everywhere,” Emily exclaimed, her voice echoing across the room.
Feeling the social pressure to stand and greet them, Sophia rose to her feet. She extended a hand to Emily for a polite handshake, but Emily pulled her into an unexpected hug, planting a quick kiss on her cheek. Caught off guard, Sophia was momentarily speechless but quickly regained her composure.
Peading with her eyes for help from Benjamin, she states, “This is Benjamin Thompson. We grew up together in Europe,” Sophia introduced, gesturing to Benjamin.
Benjamin rose gracefully, shaking everyone’s hands as Sophia continued with the introductions. The five of them stood awkwardly for a moment, unsure of the next move. Breaking the silence, Emily suggested, “Well, I suppose we need a larger table.”
“A larger table? What?” Sophia’s voice trembled with panic as she and Benjamin sat back down in their seats.
“It’s silly for us to sit separately, don’t you think? I’ll go find the maître d’; I’m sure they’ll accommodate us,” Emily declared, quickly scurrying off towards the bar.
Sophia exchanged a panicked look with Benjamin, but he wore a mischievous smile. Steven and Alexander remained silent, their gazes fixed on the unfolding scene.
Amidst the clatter of the crowded restaurant, Emily’s voice rose above the din, “Alex, he’s going to find us a table.”
Whispering anxiously to Benjamin, Sophia asked, “What are you smiling at? This is going to be a disaster.”

#18 “I Can Assure You She Meant No Harm.”
The maître d’ gracefully approached, trailed closely by Emily. He swiftly arranged the table adjacent to Sophia’s, meticulously placing the silverware and pulling out the chairs.
Reluctantly, Alexander moved towards the table, his eyes shooting daggers at Emily. Sophia let out a weary sigh, gathering her belongings and taking a seat at the new arrangement, while Benjamin settled in next to her, a mischievous grin still playing on his lips.
Once everyone was settled, Steven cleared his throat politely and smiled. ” I really feel we must apologize. I hope we’re not intruding on your date, Ms. Johnson.”
Sophia choked on her wine for a moment, then managed a smile. “Oh, no. Benjamin is my dear friend. We actually grew up together in Europe. You won’t find a kinder and more genuine person than Benjamin Thompson,” Sophia said, shooting a cold glance at Alexander.
“Thompson, Ben Thompson,” Alexander mused aloud.
“I’ve heard of your remarkable achievements across the pond. Impressive write-up about you in The Economist last month. You’re doing great things.”
Benjamin graciously acknowledged the compliment, a touch of humility in his voice. “Thank you, Alexander. I’ve also heard quite a lot about your work here at Stone Enterprises. Your reputation precedes you.”
Sophia fidgeted with her napkin, her gaze shifting between the three men. The tension in the air was palpable, each word and gesture laden with unspoken meaning. Ever the observer, Emily sensed the underlying unease and couldn’t resist injecting her perspective.
“Well, well, well, a world-renowned business entrepreneur and a powerful lawyer. Quite the power duo, wouldn’t you say, Alex?”
Emily remarked with a playful smirk. Her voice carried a hint of teasing but also a pang of envy. Sophia’s ability to effortlessly captivate attractive men had not gone unnoticed.
Sophia glanced at Benjamin, her eyes silently pleading for him to diffuse the situation. Benjamin tightened his grip on Sophia’s hand with a soft, understanding smile, offering her a silent reassurance. He then turned his attention to Emily, his voice measured and calm.
“Emily, while we appreciate your observations, it’s essential to respect the boundaries of our friendship. Sophia and I share a deep bond that goes beyond even the deepest of romantic entanglements. We support and cherish each other as dear friends, and that is something truly special.”
Alexander’s brows furrowed slightly. Emily leans forward, studying Sophia and Benjamin with a probing gaze. “It seems there’s more to your connection than meets the eye,” she comments.
Sophia sighed inwardly, feeling the weight of the anxiety of the lunch pressing against her chest. She locks eyes with Alexander, defiance in her gaze.
“There are things that go beyond the surface, Mr. Stone. Complexities that aren’t easily explained or understood. Benjamin and I have a bond forged through shared experiences, trust, and unwavering support. It’s a connection that transcends conventional labels. Something that I do not think I can put the appropriate words to.
“But still,” Emily persisted, “there must be more to this than just good buddies.”
Sophia turned to Benjamin, rolling her eyes with an air of exhaustion. She had grown weary of Emily’s persistent attempts to pry into her personal life..
With a calm yet firm tone, Sophia addressed Emily directly, “Emily, at this point, I would appreciate it if you could refrain from being such a busybody, especially when it comes to my private matters.”
Turning to Alexander with an innocent expression on her face, Emily quickly interjected, “Oh, Alex, I truly am just trying to help a fellow woman out. Honestly! You have my word, Sophia. My intentions are purely good.”
Alexander glanced at Emily and then shifted his gaze to Sophia, assessing the situation. He responded, “If Emily guarantees that she meant no harm, then I can assure you she meant no harm.”
Before Sophia could respond, Benjamin interjects, his voice filled with conviction, “Regardless of intentions, if Sophia feels that Emily is overstepping boundaries, then Emily needs to respect Sophia’s wishes.”
“Perhaps Emily simply wants to see Sophia happy,” Alexander chimed in, a tinge of irritation lacing his words.
Benjamin leaned forward, his eyes fixed on Alexander, and replied firmly, “Perhaps, Sophia is happy right where she is at this very moment.’
The room fell silent, the words hanging in the air, as each person grappled with their own thoughts and emotions. The lunch continued, but thoughts, suspicions, and accusations were forming beneath the polished facade of polite conversation.
Feeling tensions rising, Sophia quickly turns to Benjamin. “I think I am finished, and I really do need to get back to the office.”
Benjamin nods and stands. He quickly pulls Sophia’s chair out for her and whispers something in her ear. Sophia smiles, allowing a soft chuckle to escape as she gathers her belongings.
“Well, it was lovely having this impromptu lunch, but as I said, I really must get back to the office,” Sophia graciously replies. As they turn to leave, Alexander watches as Benjamin places his hand on the small of Sophia’s back to escort her through the busy restaurant.
At the front door, Alexander observes the playful banter between Sophia and Benjamin, their easy camaraderie evident to all, including himself. He couldn’t help but notice how Sophia leaned her head gently against Benjamin’s shoulder, a gesture of undeniable closeness.
Meanwhile, Steven remained silent throughout the lunch, keenly aware of the true dynamics between Alexander and Sophia. He understood the importance of keeping his own observations concealed, not risking accidentally exposing Sophia’s hidden identity.
“Steven,” Alexander interrupted abruptly, startling him out of his thoughts. “You haven’t said much. What’s going on?”
Steven, taking a final sip of his wine, replied with a casual nonchalance, “Oh, nothing out of the ordinary, Alexander. Just a lot of work on my mind.”
“Steven, I have never known you to stay silent for more than five minutes, let alone for an entire lunch,” Alexander continues. Steven nervously looks around the restaurant letting his eyes settle anywhere but on Alexander’s. The situation was remarkably awkward and uncomfortable.
Alexander chuckled, his eyes narrowing as he studied his lawyer intently. He knew there was more to the situation than met the eye.
Was there something Steven was deliberately concealing about the previous night’s meeting? Or could there be another unspoken connection between Sophia and his trusted attorney?

#19 “It All Makes Sense Now.”
“I’m certain now that Alexander will transfer his deposit into Emily’s business,” Benjamin remarks as Sophia closes the door to her office, seeking comfort in the familiar surroundings.
Feeling a sense of reassurance in her sanctuary, Sophia settles herself and replies, “I agree. StoneTech Companies holds great significance for Alexander, so it’s no surprise he’s investing all his money there. But why?”
As they both find their places on the couch, Benjamin offers Sophia a glass of water and continues, “During the flight, I did some research. The Stones and the Williams have been family friends for generations. Their relationship runs deep.”
Sophia lets out a sigh, her memory triggered.
“Yes, he mentioned something about that when I first met Emily. Alexander offered her a position in his company as a way to give her a head start, to protect her,” I think were the words he used.”
Benjamin nods in agreement. “That may be true, but let me tell you, Sophia, while Alexander Stone is undoubtedly powerful, his family and even Emily’s family hold far greater influence. They are well-guarded by strong family alliances.”
A flicker of worry crosses Sophia’s face, catching Benjamin’s attention. He despises seeing her frightened and instinctively wraps his arm around her for support. Sophia briefly relishes in his comfort before sitting up again, determined. “I have to crack this puzzle.”
Meeting her gaze with sincerity, Benjamin assures her, “Sophia, I promise to assist you and do my best to shield you from Alexander’s harassment for as long as I’m in town.”
“Thank you, Ben,” Sophia answers gratefully. “You truly are an amazing friend.”
Although the word “friend” leaves a bittersweet pang in Benjamin’s heart, he persists, “But amidst all this, we should celebrate. You deserve congratulations for divorcing that jerk! You’re incredible, stunning, intelligent, and, quite frankly, perfect. He’s nothing but a wanker!”
Sophia’s lips curl into a smile, unsure whether to burst into laughter or embrace her dear friend tighter.
Sophia rises from her seat and walks over to her desk, where a neat stack of files awaits her attention. The sight of the organized paperwork serves as a stark reminder of the pressing workload she should be tackling, but her mind remains preoccupied and unable to focus.
“It all makes sense now, Ben,” Sophia remarks, gloom coloring her expression. “What does, my dear?” Ben inquires, sensing the answer from the melancholy that envelops her face.
“The truth is, Alexander’s abrupt withdrawal from Evelyn’s father’s bank, despite years of a highly profitable association, has nothing to do with Evelyn or me. It was solely for Emily’s benefit. Evelyn and I were mere casualties of a convoluted twist of fate. He was always going to do this for Emily.”
Turning towards Benjamin, baring her helpless heart, she whispers, “His love and devotion were always reserved exclusively for Emily.”
Benjamin springs up from his seat, eager to enfold Sophia in a comforting embrace, but Sophia’s anguish quickly transforms into embarrassment.
With a forced laugh, she holds Benjamin at arm’s length and admits, ” I’m such a fool! Utterly ridiculous! I feel, well, I feel stupid!”
Watching Sophia endure such pain tugs at Benjamin’s heartstrings. Desperate to uplift her spirits, he blurts out, ” Listen, Sophia Johnson, you are anything but a fool and absolutely not STUPID!.”
Cupping her chin tenderly, he lifts her gaze to meet his. “I have a brilliant idea, and you’re not allowed to refuse. Speaking of ridiculous, my parents are demanding that I attend a charity gala at The Crystal Chateau Ballroom, and you are coming with me as my date.”
Meanwhile, an air of irritation surrounds Alexander within the confines of his office. Seated behind his desk, Sophia Johnson occupies his every thought, refusing to relent.
Engaging in a one-sided conversation, he muses aloud, “Who is this woman? She possesses an intricate web of connections just as complex as mine, yet I only recently became aware of her existence. And it’s obvious that she shares a particular connection with Steven, even if he denies it.”
Laura enters his office, rapping gently on the door, interrupting his monologue. “Laura, you better bring me some good news,” Alexander grumbles, his impatience tangible.
“I’m afraid not, Mr. Stone. We’re still unable to pinpoint the whereabouts of your ex-wife,” Laura calmly reports. “ABSURD!” Alexander bellows.
“My ex-wife is a destitute woman with no meaningful relationships or associations. How can it be that you haven’t been able to locate her? It seems to me that either your efforts are lacking or your competence is sorely lacking.”
“With all due respect, Mr. Stone,” Laura begins, having grown accustomed to bearing the brunt of his outbursts over the years, even when they weren’t directed at her. She knows how to handle him.
“I don’t believe this is a matter of incompetence or insufficient effort. However, I completely understand if you feel inclined to assign someone else to this task.”
Taking a deep breath and recognizing his misdirected anger, Alexander responds, “No, Laura, absolutely not. I need you on this. Continue the search for my ex-wife. She can’t remain hidden indefinitely.”
“Of course,” Laura affirms, already approaching the door. “Oh, and one more thing, Laura,” Alexander interjects. “I want to reopen the investigation into Sophia Johnson.”
Laura raises an eyebrow, intrigued. ” Really? In that case, I believe it’s time to utilize our underground network to get a complete, comprehensively understand this woman.”
“I concur,” Alexander swiftly agrees.” Arrange a meeting with our most reliable informant without delay.”
“Perhaps we should also schedule a meeting with Ms. Johnson herself. We can frame it as a business or personal encounter, but we need to get face-to- face with her,” Laura suggests, jotting down notes on a pad.
Alexander turns toward Laura, his tone loaded with anger. “Why? What exactly do you think I want to do with her? Date her?”
Laura stops writing, her expression a mix of confusion and surprise. She stares at Alexander, momentarily taken aback.
“I don’t pay you to meddle in my personal affairs!” Alexander reprimands her sharply.
“I apologize, Mr. Stone. I merely thought… I mean, the way you looked at Ms. Johnson… never mind. I’m sorry, “Laura apologizes once again. Glancing at her phone as it chimes, Laura smiles and redirects her attention to Alexander.
“I just received confirmation that our informant will be attending the Crystal Chateau Ballroom for their annual
charity gala. I suggest you find your tuxedo promptly.”
After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 20
#20 “I Wonder Who His Date Is.”
This year, the esteemed Crystal Chateau Ballroom plays host to the highly anticipated annual charity gala organized by Emily’s illustrious family. Emily’s mother, Barbara, a respected figure in the banking world, and her father, Daniel, a distinguished senator, have long been recognized as pillars of philanthropy in the community.
Their decision to select the Crystal Chateau Ballroom as the venue reflects their tireless commitment to hosting events of unparalleled grandeur reserved exclusively for the crème de la crème of society. The ballroom’s reputation as a haven of luxury and refinement aligns seamlessly with the esteemed status of the distinguished guests in attendance.
As Emily and Alexander make their grand entrance, the sudden hush at various tables rippled across the room like a gentle wave, drawing everyone’s attention to a couple making their entrance.
“That’s Alexander Stone,” murmured a man in awe, his voice barely audible above the murmur of the crowd.
Alexander Stone, a man of undeniable charm and charisma, commanded an air of authority and was instantly recognized by many, and some stood to greet him. Others acknowledged his prominent status as the CEO of Stone Enterprises, their reverence evident in their hushed tones.
However, it was the woman gracefully adorning Alexander’s arm who captured the imagination of the onlookers, drawing curious gazes and stirring whispers of curiosity.
“Who is that with him?” questioned several women, their voices tinged with a hint of envy, their eyes intently fixed on the mysterious lady.
“I wonder who his date is,” pondered others, their intrigue palpable. “She must be someone important,” speculated one of them. “Perhaps a business associate or a socialite,” chimed in another.
Emily basks in the intoxicating awareness that every eye in the room is fixated upon her. The whispers of intrigue and curiosity that envelop her and Alexander serve as sweet melodies to her ears, fueling her sense of superiority.
“All eyes are on me,” Emily thinks. With a self-assured smirk, she lifts her gaze, locking eyes with Alexander, his striking green eyes meeting hers. In that decisive moment, a torrent of unwavering confidence surges through her veins; Emily knows it is just a matter of time before Alexander Stone will be hers!
Emily gracefully links her arm with Alexander’s, guiding him towards her family’s table, strategically positioned at the heart of the ballroom. Draped in her exquisite E.STOTT Silk Sadie Gown, she revels in the admiring gazes and whispered conversations that swirl around them as they travel the room.
“Emily,” Barbara warmly greets the couple as they take their seats at the lavishly adorned table, “and Alexander. We are absolutely ecstatic that you could join us tonight.”
“Emily, I was just telling Margary here, “Barbara says, her eyes sparkling with excitement, “that we are in for an extraordinary treat tonight. The last composition of the European music maestro, Marcus Paus, will be performed for us for the first time by one of his most talented students, specially flown in from London!”
Emily’s face lights up; her pride is evident as she acknowledges her mother’s words. “How splendid, Mom! It promises to be a truly unforgettable evening.”
“Emily, there are several people I need to introduce you to before the performance begins,” Barbara says, leading Emily away from the table.
“Mother, I would really much rather sit and chat with Alexander,” Emily replies.
“Of course, you would,” Barabra answers, looking back at Alexander. He has made his way to the bar and appears to be in a serious conversation with another businessman.
Scrutinizing at her daughter clicks her tongue, “However, one would have thought that you would have chosen a more appropriate dress for this evening.
“What are you talking about, Mother?” Emily asks, horrified. “This is an E.STOTT!”
Barbara pulls Emily closer, “I don’t care if it is a hand-stiched Brunello Cucinelli. This dress does nothing for your figure. We discussed this. How can you hook Alexander with this appearance?”
With her natural charisma, Barbara effortlessly guides her daughter through the crowd. As they approach a table, Emily’s irritation with her mother rises. “This is my daughter, Emily,” Barbara introduces to a table. “She is escorted tonight by Mr. Alexander Stone.”
“Mr. Stone?” an older woman, dripping in diamonds, replies from the table. I met him at a gala a few months ago. Simply charming man!”
Daniel appears behind the woman and gently clears his throat. Emily feels a moment of reprieve, hoping her father will take her back to their table and Alexander.
Instead, Daniel says to the overly- jeweled woman, “We have a real treat tonight. In addition to some fantastic performances, Emily will also perform a violin solo before the finale.”
Emily smiles, acknowledging her father’s compliment. Barbara turns and smiles at Emily. Quietly she whispers to her daughter, “Don’t you dare mess it up!”
Unbeknownst to Emily, whispers float through the air, carried by the questioning guests. “She only got the opportunity to perform because of her parents’
influence,” murmured one guest, while another commented, “It must be nice to have everything handed to you.”
However, amidst the mixed opinions, a sudden hush fell over the ballroom, drawing everyone’s attention to the entrance. All eyes turned toward the couple who had just arrived, their presence commanding the spotlight.
The man exudes timeless charm and undeniable magnetism, dressed in a meticulously tailored Kiton tuxedo. His captivating brown eyes hold a magnetic allure, perfectly complementing his impeccable style and poised demeanor. Yet, the woman by his side truly enchanted the room.
Radiating ethereal beauty, her blue eyes shimmered like the clearest sapphire, emanating an air of mystery. Luxurious waves of blonde hair cascaded around her face, lending an otherworldly glow to her features. Each strand carries a touch of sunlight, infusing her with warmth and vitality. The sleek elegance of her Dolce& Gabbana Crystal Mesh Slip gown accentuated her every curve, embracing her with subtle elegance. A delicate Cartier necklace adorned with shimmering diamonds graced her collarbone, catching the light and reflecting her inner luminosity radiantly.
“Why does she always show up and steal my spotlight?” Internally, Emily couldn’t help but feel a pang of frustration. She thought, grappling with a sense of inferiority.
As Benjamin and Sophia approached where the Williams’ are gathered, Barbara greets them with an air of flattering enthusiasm, her words dripping with an artificial warmth.
“Ah, Benjamin Thompson, it’s an absolute pleasure to meet you finally,” she exclaimed, her tone loaded with approval. “I’ve heard of your remarkable entrepreneurial prowess that has taken Europe by storm.”
“Well, thank you, Mrs. Williams, ” Benjamin replies. He can sense Sophia’s uncomfortableness and tries to move past the family.
Turning her attention to Sophia, Barbara maintains her outwardly warm demeanor, yet her eyes are hard. “And you, my dear Sophia Johnson,” she persists, “Emily has spoken quite highly of you.”
A momentary smile plays on Barbara’s lips, concealing her underlying unease. She knows that Sophia is one of the primary obstacles standing between Emily and Alexander’s relationship.
“We’re seated at table 8,” Sophia announced with a gentle smile, nudging Benjamin playfully away from the Williams.
Barbra’s eyes light up with delight upon hearing the news. “Wonderful! We’re at the same table. Follow us,” she exclaimed, leading the way through the lavishly decorated ballroom.
As they reach the table, Benjamin and Sophia take their seats first, positioning themselves next to each other.
While catching a glimpse of Alexander, Emily hastily moves to secure the seat on the other side of Sophia. However, her attempt proves futile as Alexander swiftly strides over and settles down next to Sophia, his presence eliciting a noticeable tension.
Sensing Alexander’s arrival, Sophia turns her body slightly, positioning herself with her back turned to him. Her dislike for him was undisguised and hung palpably in the air.
Alexander, clearly bothered by Sophia’s open animosity, let out a frustrated sigh, unable to ignore the subtle snub. He glares at Benjamin over Sophia’s shoulder and places his hand on hers.
“Ms. Johnson, we keep running into each other,” Alexander croons. As Sophia continues to ignore him, Alexander’s voice grows in intensity. “I was hoping I would run into you here tonight.”
Sophia turns to Alexander, her eyes filled with impatience. She quickly removes his hand from the top of hers and whispers something in Benjamin’s ear in a low voice, prompting them to switch seats. Now situated next to Alexander, Benjamin couldn’t help but inject a touch of amusement into the situation.
“My, my, my, we do seem to keep ending up in the same place, Mr. Stone, “he greets with a sly grin.
Clearly irritated by the seat change, Alexander grumbles in response, “Yes, we do, Mr. Thompson. I was hoping to sit next to Ms. Johnson.” Alexander leans back in his chair, allowing his size and presence to fill the space around him.
After reveling in the opportunity to provoke Alexander, Benjamin retorts, Ah, yes, I’m sure you were. But when a lady requests a change of seats, one must oblige, don’t you think?”
Alexander’s gaze shifts past Benjamin to Sophia, who holds her head high, radiating timeless beauty as she engages in an effortless conversation with the woman beside her. Her sapphire-blue eyes shimmer like stars in the night sky, and her golden locks exude a glowing luminosity, making her a vision of captivating elegance.
“A vision that this man does not deserve on his arm,” Alexander thinks, his jealousy simmering beneath the surface.
Benjamin leans slightly forward, observing Alexander’s lingering gaze on Sophia, purposefully obstructing his view. This man had caused Sophia so much pain with their divorce, and Benjamin was determined not to let history repeat itself.
“Emily certainly looks lovely this evening,” Benjamin breaks the silence, attempting to divert Alexander’s attention. Alexander’s response is curt but filled with a hint of agreement, “Yes, she does.”
Benjamin, aware that Alexander’s focus is still on Sophia, makes a final declaration, “I suggest you keep your eyes and your thoughts on the woman you came here with, Mr. Stone. I would hate for people to discover your real truth.” Benjamin turns to Sophia, caressing the nape of her neck, and begins conversing with others.
Alexander was infuriated by this apparent provocation. Driven by anger, he clenched his jaw and stared at the man in front of him who was deliberately provoking him.
