After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 21

#21 “I was Wondering the Same Thing.”

Emily, having been closely watching the exchange between Benjamin and Alexander, brushed Alexander’s hand to nab his attention.

“Alex, thank you for coming here with me tonight,” Emily said, trying to keep his attention. “I know my parents can be a bit much, so I really am grateful.”

Slowly shifting his eyes from Sophia to Emily, Alexander takes a deep breath and sits back in his chair. Turning to meet Emily’s gaze fully, Alexander replies, “Of course. This is a great networking opportunity.”

Catching the edge still in Alexander’s voice, Emily leans in closer to him, hoping to draw him nearer to her. “I have to admit I am excited but also nervous about my performance tonight, Emily whispers.

Taking a sip of his champagne, Alex mutters, “Yes, I am sure it will be lovely.” His eyes never divert from closely watching Sophia and Benjamin, but it was obvious he had put the confrontation on hold for the time being. Meanwhile, Benjamin and Sophia had their heads bent close in lighthearted banter.

“I am so impressed that they were able to get a student of Marcus Paus to perform tonight,” Benjamin exclaimed. “The Williams is certainly a lot of things, and connoisseurs of fine music appear to be one,” Finishing his glass of champagne, he adds, “and fine champagne, too.”

“Yes,” Sophia agrees, “this is quite an impressive accomplishment of the Williams. Their taste in everything is… fine.” Sophia flashes a curt smile at Benjamin, and they both giggle.

“Tell me, do you think Barbara knows your relationship with Maestro Paus?” Benjamin smirks. The combination of the champagne and his and Sophia’s shared secret has made him a bit giddy.

Sophia takes a sip of her champagne and offers a knowing look to Ben. ” Absolutely not. I would be shocked if she did. I am not sure anyone knows that I play the violin, at least stateside.’

“I don’t know,” Ben laughs, “Barbara is pretty slippery. She seems the type of lady who always wants to have the upper hand in everything. I would not put it past her to have some sort of spectacle set up.”

“No,” Sophia answers quickly, “first, Maestro Paus would not stand for any nonsense. He is one of the most professional people I have ever met.”

“Sure he is,” Benjamin teases as the waiter brings him another glass of champagne.

Sophia smiles, knowing her friend is only razzing her. “I have been a student under him since I was a teenager. He has been working on this piece for over two years. I cannot count how many times I have flown to London to help him finish it. His work is everything to him. He would never allow someone like Barbara Williams to exploit it.”

Benjamin smiles. Sophia’s talents are immeasurable, and he is always in awe of her. “So wait, does that mean you know the piece well? Like, can you play it?”

“Of course! I know it extremely. I can perform it just as well as the student who is playing tonight.” Sophia replies without a hint of boasting or gloating in her voice.

“So, do you know this talented protege that is performing?” Ben questions. “Yes, in fact, I am actually a close friend with the soloist.”

“Of course, you are, my dear,” Benjamin laughs. Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Alexander watching the two of them intensely. Benjamin can’t help but torment him, placing his hand on top of Sophia’s.

“Did you see what I donated to the charitable auction that is happening after the concert?” Sophia asks.

“No, what, tell me,” Ben replies, leaning closer to Sophia. Alexander’s body becomes more tense the closer Benjamin moves to Sophia.

“Well, I wanted to make sure it was something extraordinary. So from my own personal collection, I donated a Stradivari’s violin.” Sophia beams.

Unaware of the prestige of the violin, Benjamin simply grins back. Leaning closer, Sophia replies, “It is a very treasured violin.”

“Ladies and Gentlemen,” the tense voice of the orchestra conductor echoes through the ballroom. “At this time, please join me in welcoming a very special performance. Ms. Emily Williams has graciously agreed to provide us with a taste of her brilliance on the violin.”

There is a faint round of applause from the crowd as Emily proceeds to take the stage. She performs Tchaikovsky’s Concerto, playing well but not overly memorable. The audience responds with a soft round of polite applause as she finishes the piece.

Emily eagerly embraces her parents after coming offstage and returning to the table. “Wonderful darling! Simply wonderful, Emily’s father muses. Emily peeks at Alexander, anxiously waiting for his response.

“Well?” she questions timidly.

“Oh, it was fine. Lovely job, Emily,” Alexander replies. “Do you think I could get another glass of champagne? “Alex asks as a waiter walks by the table.

Emily’s heart plunges as she takes her seat back at the table. It is evident that he is absent-minded.

The concert continues from the stage, but there is a buzz of anxious anticipation among the audience as they wait for the pinnacle performance of the evening.

“I simply cannot wait to hear Maestro Paus’s new piece” can be heard among the edgy guests. Sophia grows progressively more bored as the concert continues. She knows the new piece that would be played, and while it is incredible, it is not new to her. Stifling a yawn, Sophia notices an older man approach Barbara. He quickly whispers something in Barbara’s ear, and they both hurriedly leave the table.

“Well, that was intriguing,” Sophia states more to herself than anyone in particular.

“What was that?” Benjamin asks.

“Oh, nothing.”

“Has your friend arrived yet? The surprise guest performer?” Benjamin questions.

“I was wondering the same thing,” Sophia answers as she surveys the room. She also notices that she and Benjamin are not the only ones who seem to have noticed the absence of the musician.

“Certainly, if he were here, he would have stopped by to say hello,” Sophia remarks.

As Sophia continues to glance around the room, the orchestra music swells. As the audience breaks into a standing ovation and the conductor takes a much -deserved bow, Sophia can’t help but wonder why the violinist had not shown up.

After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 22

#22 “Why not Let Her Try.”

Biting her bottom lip, Sophia turns to Benjamin with a worried expression. You know, I think I am going to text him. Find out if something has happened.”

“Good idea,” Benjamin answers, concern also apparent on his face. Sophia quickly takes out her phone and sends a text to the violinist. Moments later, she receives a reply, and a quiet laugh escapes her lips before she turns to Benjamin.

“What did he say?” Benjamin asks, eager to know why the musician is absent and Sophia’s laughter.

Reading the text, Sophia says, “Well, it seems that he has run into a completely unpredictable circumstance. He says there is no way he will be able to arrive anytime soon.”

“Oh, no,” Benjamin says, clearly disappointed. “He also says that had he been made aware that I was attending the gala, he would not have wanted to come,” 11 Sophia says, her cheeks blushing.

Benjamin raises an eyebrow in question. Sophia hesitantly blushes even deeper before continuing, “He says he would have been too intimidated by me to perform.”

Benjamin chuckles, “That’s quite the compliment!”

Sophia shrugs, “I am sure he’s just being polite.” A lull descends upon the performance, and the conductor takes the stage, a concerned expression on his face.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, I am afraid that our guest violinist has encountered an unforeseen situation and is running a bit behind,” he announces.

The audience lets out an audible murmur of disgruntlement, disappointment spreading through the room like wildfire.

“Please,” the conductor continues, trying to soothe the restless crowd, everyone, he has promised that he should be here shortly, so if everyone will just patiently wait. Enjoy some more champagne. I am sure he will be here momentarily.”

As the time of the musician’s absence stretches on, several audience members begin to leave, expressing their frustration with impatient gestures and hushed complaints. Barbara’s face grows visibly tense, and she looks at her husband. “Do something, Daniel,” she demands As time ticks on, the tension in the room becomes palpable. People glance at their watches, impatiently waiting for any sign of the musician’s arrival. There are several shouts of wanting a refund, and murmurs of boos ripple through the space, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere.

“Should we leave?” Benjamin asks, concerned about the escalating tension in the room. However, Sophia’s attention is immediately diverted as her phone starts ringing.

“Hello,” her voice is edgy as she answers the call. She quickly mouths to Benjamin, “IT’S THE MUSICIAN.”

“I can’t hear you very well; I am going to step away,” Sophia states, walking towards a quiet corner of the room and putting the phone on speaker so she can hear better.

“Sophia, I am so sorry,” the thick English-accented voice asserts, “but there is absolutely no way I am going to be able to make it there tonight.”

“No! Are you sure? The Maestro will be so disappointed,” Sophia says, her heart sinking at the news.

“I know, which is why you must perform it,” the musician responds. “Me? Oh no. You have rehearsed the piece so much more than I have. I am sure Maestro Paus will understand,” Sophia protests.

The British voice laughs softly. “We both know that he will not. But honestly, Sophia, given your connection to Maestro Paus, it would be much more momentous for you to debut the piece.”

Reluctant to take the stage and reveal this side of her, Sophia knows what her friend says is true. She also knows he would help her if the situation were switched.

“Ok, for Maestro Paus and you, I will help out,” Sophia finally agrees, her voice resolved. Returning to the gala, Sophia searches for Barbara. She spots her huddled in the corner of the ballroom with the conductor, their faces etched with concern.

“We have to do something. This is preposterous!” Barbara exclaims, her frustration obvious. Noticing Sophia’s approach, Barbara turns to her, impatience unhidden on her face.

“I think I have a solution for you, Mrs. Williams,” Sophia says, trying to sound confident.

“Really?” Barbara replies incredulously.

“I can play the piece. I know the concerto,” Sophia asserts.

Barbara graciously smiles, but her doubt is noticeable. “While I am sure you are a fine violinist, I doubt you can provide the performance we need. Thank you, though, dear.”

Sophia takes a deep breath, not letting Barbara’s skepticism deter her. “May I speak with the conductor for a moment?” she requests, blatantly ignoring the condescension radiating from Barbara.

Exasperated, Barbara waves her hand at Sophia and steps aside for her and the conductor to talk.

Seeing the conductor up close, Sophia recognizes him from a performance she attended in Vienna. “Herr Bauer,” Sophia begins, “You might not remember me, but we met at your performance at the Vienna Opera House. I was a guest of Maestro Paus.”

With a look of instant recognition, the conductor replies, “Frau Johnson! Yes, of course, I remember you. How could one ever forget such a Schönheit… um, how do you say… beauty?”

“Thank you. I was just telling Mrs. Williams here that I know Maestro Paus’s piece very well and would be honored to perform it,” Sophia explains.

“Ja! That is wunderbar! You will play!” the conductor beams, leading Sophia back towards Barbara.

At a cocktail table nearby, Barbara, Emily, and Alexander anxiously listen as the conductor shares Sophia’s proposal to perform the piece.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Barbara hesitates.

“Right,” Emily shrieks, looking at her mom, shocked at the possibility that Sophia might show her up again in front of Alexander.

“Really, Sophia, again, thank you, but we need a professional,” Barbara mutters. “I promise I will not disappoint you,” Sophia replies.

“Sophia, you don’t want to get up there in front of all these people and embarrass yourself. I mean, could you imagine? It would be social suicide,” 11 Emily urges, although secretly wishing that would be precisely what happens.

“I assure you that would be the case” Sophia declares calmly. “However, I was only offering my help. If it is not needed, I think I will find Benjamin, and we will head out.”

“Now wait a minute, Barbara,” Alexander interjects, breaking into the conversation with a velvety smile. “If Sophia is so confident, why not let her try.

After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 23

#23 “You are A Fraud!”

With the decision made, Sophia retrieves her Stradivari’s from the backstage area where it was stored for the auction. She adjusts the tuning pegs until the G, D, A, and E notes are flawless. Taking a deep breath, Sophia walks out onto the center stage.

The orchestra has been cleared, and just a chair is magnified by a spotlight. The audience begins to quiet as they notice someone has finally taken the seat, but as Sophia settles in to play, several people let out disbelieving noises.

However, once Sophia begins to play, the audience is captivated. Her fingers, nimble and precise, dance effortlessly across the strings, producing a melody that seems to float like silk in the air.

As Sophia closes her eyes, fully immersed in the music, her body sways in harmony with the emotional peaks and valleys of the concerto. Her bow glides smoothly over the strings, drawing out a velvety sound that seemed to caress the very soul of the listeners.

Enraptured by her skill and artistry, the audience holds their breath in awe of the exquisite performance unfolding before them. The concerto becomes a story, woven delicately by her every stroke, conveying emotions transcending words.

Sophia’s style of playing the piece is different from her friend’s way of playing the music. While he played with a polished, refined, sharp edge, Sophia played more gracefully and fluidly. However, most of the audience could not tell any difference in performance.

As the piece ends and Sophia sighs, the audience is momentarily silent before erupting into vigorous applause. The thunderous sound fills the concert hall.

Alexander is particularly impressed and surprised by the revelation of Sophia’s musical talent. She had never disclosed her ability to play the violin before. Furthermore, his research yielded no information about her connections with renowned musicians. Being both a lawyer and a violinist, how many more secrets lie behind this woman?

As Sophia returns to the table, both the hosts and guests quickly stand to greet her.

“Ms. Johnson. I must say, bravo!” Daniel exclaims, offering rapturous applause. “I knew you were a powerful and talented businesswoman, but I could never have guessed that you are also an expert concert violinist.”

“Yes, I must admit that was amazing,” Barbara chimes in, her voice full of genuine admiration. “Thank you so much for this unexpected performance!

Sophia smiles warmly as she looks around the table. The smiles she receives are genuine, except for Emily, whose jealousy is becoming evident through a slight frown and tight grip on her champagne glass. Emily tries to force a smile, but her envy is difficult to conceal.

“Thank you, everyone,” Sophia says graciously, attempting to ease the tension. “I’m glad I could step in and help make this evening memorable for all of you and pay tribute to Maestro Paus.”

“How dare you say that would be something Maestro Paus would be proud of?” someone shouts from the audience, their voice filled with disdain.

“That was a disgrace to Maestro Paus and the piece,” the anonymous voice continues to shout. “You are a fraud! That was a complete distortion and, frankly, disrespectful!”

Sophia remains calm and unaffected by the harsh words, as she has not surprised to realize that the person causing such disruption earlier with boos is the same individual now berating her performance.

Other voices from the crowd chime in with questions, creating a wave of uncertainty and doubt in the room. Who was that?” and “How could she possibly have known that piece?” echo through the ballroom, intensifying the tension.

Emily quickly rushes to Sophia’s side, urging her to address the audience and provide an explanation to quell the misunderstandings.

“You have to say something. Give them some explanation so you can quickly put an end to this,” Emily insists. In her head, however, Emily is relishing in the spectacle. “She is going to be humiliated. They are going to eat her alive,” she thinks.

Sophia takes a deep breath, She casts a glance at the person feigning kind insistence, “I do not owe them anything,” she explains.

Emily raises an eyebrow. “I think you do. Just explain how you know that piece so well,” she retorts, hoping for an explanation that she’s sure Sophia cannot provide..

Looking at Emily firmly, Sophia stands her ground. “Emily, you always seem to be looking for a way to embarrass me. And frankly, I am getting tired of it.”

Astonishment covers Emily’s face, but Sophia doesn’t back down. “And I’m sure I’ve said this to you before, but let me repeat it. You are extremely nosy, and I would very much like you to stay out of my personal business,” she declares.

Before Emily can reply, the missing musician, Sophia’s friend, enters the ballroom. Surprised by his timely arrival as Sophia sees him rushing towards her, ready to express his gratitude for stepping in to perform. If he were a minute late, she will have revealed her identity herself.

However, before he can utter a word, the crowd’s accusations directed at Sophia catch his attention, causing him to hesitate. Hearing the commotion, the musician walks away from Sophia and heads to the center stage. He takes hold of the empty microphone, addressing the upset audience.

“Excuse me,” he begins rather softly but then repeats it louder to gain the audience’s attention. “My name is Oliver Campbell, and I must apologize for missing my scheduled performance.

With this announcement, the audience instantly quiets, realizing that the mystery performer they had been waiting for had finally arrived.

“I am, however,” Oliver continues, his voice growing more assertive, “sure that the performance by Ms. Johnson was far superior to anything I could have ever hoped to deliver.”

The audience members exchange puzzled glances, their anger starting to subside as they listen to Oliver’s words.

Oliver continues, “As I am sure you are all aware, Ms. Johnson is a student of Maestro Paus, and, in fact, she helped him with composing the piece. The Maestro has spoken very openly about Ms. Johnson being such an inspiration to him.’

The audience’s attitude towards Sophia quickly shifts, and a sense of astonishment replaces their doubt. After Oliver’s heartfelt praise, no one dares to challenge her credentials or abilities.

Sophia looks at her friend on the stage, expressing a look of profound gratitude. If he hadn’t shown up today, she could have actually handled the situation herself. However, his testimony would undoubtedly spare her trouble.

Over her shoulder, she hears a woman whisper, “She must be the anonymous muse whom the Maestro expressed gratitude to in his interviews.”

After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 24

#24 “Are You Trying to Irritate Me?”

“Since I am here now, I would love to invite Ms. Johnson back to the stage for a brief duet with me. If she will give me the honor,” Oliver asks, motioning for Sophia to join him.

With a radiant smile, Sophia gladly rejoins her friend on the stage. After a few playful exchanges, they settle into a rousing version of Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata for 2 Violins. Their synchronized performance is

breathtaking, captivating the crowd. As the final note resounds through the hall, the audience erupts into another round of enthusiastic applause, their admiration for both musicians evident.

After the applause for the spontaneous duet settles, the auctioneer for the auction takes the stage, his face shining with excitement. “Well, let’s keep that energy going for our charity auction!”

As the auction commences, valuable items are enthusiastically bid on, and a substantial amount of money is raised for charity. Benjamin successfully bids for a Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, while Sophia wins a Pablo Picasso sculpture. However, the most sought-after auction item of the evening is Sophia’s Stradivari’s violin.

When the auctioneer brings Sophia’s prized possession to the stage, the audience buzzes with excitement. “I can see we are all ready to bid on the Stradivari’s violin that Ms. Johnson so expertly played on for us today. We shall start the bidding at 10,000 dollars.

Immediately, a flurry of paddles rises into the air, including Benjamin’s and Alexander’s. Turning to her friend, Sophia jokes, “I don’t think you will have to help drive the bid higher.”

“Are you kidding me?” Benjamin responds with a smirk. “I want that! What you did tonight was amazing!”

The auctioneer skillfully continues the bidding, quickly reaching 10,000, then 50,000, and even 100,000 dollars. Sophia feels a sense of pride and satisfaction knowing that her violin is generating such generous charitable contributions.

As the bidding climbs to 200,000 dollars, Benjamin, with a hint of disappointment, admits, “Sorry, dear, too rich for my blood.”

Surveying the room, Sophia notices that several determined bidders, including Alexander, are still raising their paddles.

“As long as Alexander doesn’t win, I don’t think I’ll care,” Sophia remarks quietly to Benjamin. The auction proceeds, reaching a staggering 850,000 dollars with two determined bidders remaining.

“I can’t believe he is still bidding,” Sophia whispers as Alexander raises his paddle to bid 900,000 dollars.

“Do I have 950,000 from the woman in the corner?” the auctioneer asks. She smiles and nods. Turning to Alexander, he inquires, “Do we make it an even million?”

Alexander raises his paddle without hesitation, and the room releases a small gasp in awe at the monumental price. The other bidder politely declines to raise the bid any further. “With that, the Stradivari’s violin is awarded to the gentleman at table 8 for an even one million dollars.”

The audience explodes with applause, and Alexander grins, satisfied with his successful bid. Sophia whispers to Benjamin, “I really wanted it to go to someone I didn’t dislike as much as I dislike him.”

“Honey, he paid one million dollars for charity,” Benjamin consoles.

“Yes, true, for charity. And he was most certainly very generous with his donation. I am very grateful for that.” Sophia concedes, clinking her champagne glass with his. But she is still somewhat disheartened that her violin now belongs to Alexander Stone.

Impressed with Alexander’s bidding prowess, Emily turns to him with an enormous smile. “I cannot believe you bid that much for the violin!” she exclaims.

Alexander turns his flamboyant green eyes to meet Emily’s gaze. “Well, it is an incredibly crafted instrument, and I know it will make the perfect present,” he says confidently. Emily’s heart skips a beat, “Alexander was bidding on the violin as a gift for me!”

His acknowledgment made her smile from ear to ear. Feeling a rush of excitement, she moves her hands to rest on Alexander’s arm, trying flirtingly to communicate her happiness.

“Yes, it is the perfect gift,” Emily replies, attempting to keep a seductive tone as she leans closer to him.

Alexander’s response is quick, shifting slightly, avoiding Emily’s hands. “My mother has an affinity for stringed instruments, and with her birthday coming up soon, I am sure she will love it.”

A wave of realization crashes over Emily, and her excitement deflates like a popped balloon. She quickly tries to recover from her assumption. “Oh, yes. It is perfect for her. You are a wonderful son,” Emily forces a smile, though her eyes show her disappointment.

Alexander, oblivious to Emily’s feelings, nods in agreement. “Thank you. She has always supported my pursuits, so I want to give her something special.”

Emily nods, trying to hide her feelings as she turns her attention back to the ongoing auction. As the auction nears its end, Oliver gracefully makes his way to table eight, where Sophia, Benjamin, Alexander, and Emily are still seated.

“Sophia, I wanted to thank you again for the incredible duet and, of course, for covering for me earlier,” Oliver comments. “Of course,” Sophia replies with a warm smile. “Anything for a friend.”

Oliver then addresses the rest of the table. “Well, I am going to retire for the night. Mr. Stone, it is a pleasure to put a name to the face finally,” he says, extending his hand.

Alexander rises and shakes Oliver’s hand cordially, replying, “Yes, my family is beyond honored to be the organizers for your upcoming concert.

“I truly appreciate it. It should be a fantastic evening,” Oliver responds appreciatively. As Alexander gazes at Sophia, his eyes softening, “Ms. Johnson, you should attend too. Maybe we will get lucky, and you will grace us with another surprise performance.”

“Thank you, Mr. Stone, but I am going to have to decline the invitation,” she says politely but firmly. “Oliver, it was a pleasure to see you again. Let me walk you to the door.”

Alexander is irritated by Sophia’s constant rejection, “How many times do you need me to be rejected before you’re satisfied? Are you intentionally trying to irritate me?” He grabs her arm and asks.

Sophia pulls away from Alexander’s grasp and responds, “Mr. Stone, I am not trying to irritate you or stir up any emotions. I do appreciate you vouching for me with Barbara, but truth be told, we just don’t get along with each other. So, I see no reason to go to your concert or spend any more time with you than absolutely necessary.”

With that, she embraces Oliver and leads him towards the exit. Sophia’s words completely ignite Alexander’s anger. He silently makes his way toward the informant remembering his prearranged meeting.

Spotting the informant sitting at the bar, Alexander makes his way through the crowded ballroom towards him, his face set in a stony expression.

After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 25

#25 “I Will Take the Case.”

“Macallan neat,” Alexander gruffly says to the bartender as soon as he reaches the bar. He takes the empty seat next to the informant, Kyle Vennillia, and impatiently awaits his Scotch, drumming his fingers on the bar top.

“That was quite the performance,” Kyle remarks, breaking the silence. ” Who would have thought a woman who looks like that could play so well.”

Taking a long sip of his Scotch, Alexander turns to Kyle with a hint of irritation. “I’m Alexander Stone.” Alex does not extend his hand for a handshake.

“Yes, Mr. Stone, I know who you are. Laura told me you needed to speak with me urgently,” Kyle replies calmly.

Alexander shows no sign of relaxing, even after finishing his drink in one long gulp. He sternly says, “Well, she is mistaken. I never NEED anything. But I do have a matter I would like to discuss with you.”

“Of course, Alex. Can I call you Alex?” Kyle asks, trying to lighten the tense atmosphere. “No,” Alexander replies curtly, making it clear that he prefers a more formal address.

“Hmm, she really has you worked up,” Kyle remarks as he signals to the bartender for another round of drinks.

“Who?” Alexander answers, trying to maintain his cool demeanor, though he is disappointed that it is so apparent that Sophia rattles him.

“Sophia Johnson. I saw that little interaction the two of you had a moment ago. For someone known for his unshakable, calm, and collective behavior, I am quite surprised by how much she seems to have bothered you,” Kyle observes with a sly smile.

A long silence hangs in the air, Alexander can scarcely deny that this man possesses an uncanny intuition. It becomes undeniable that Laura, his competent assistant, had recommended him for a reason.

“Laura believes you can provide some insights into what is really going on,” Alexander admits, leaning in slightly.” 11 I want to understand why Sophia seems to harbor such animosity towards me. It’s baffling. I demand answers. I want you to find out why.”

Kyle chuckles softly, enjoying the puzzle of the situation. “Well, Alex, let me tell you this: People aren’t always what they seem. Sometimes, there’s more to their actions than meets the eye. And it seems like you and Sophia have quite the dynamic going on. You might just be surprised by what you discover.”

“That woman,” Alexander begins, taking a sip of his refreshed drink, ” that woman is continually hostile to me when I have been nothing but respectful to her. It makes no sense. There must be something that I am missing.”

“And that’s where I come in?” Kyle asks rhetorically, clearly sensing the opportunity to delve into a fascinating situation. He leans back in his chair, taking a thoughtful sip of his own drink, inviting Alexander to share more details about the situation with Sophia.

Alexander nods, a determined glint in his eyes. “Yes, I need someone to find out everything there is to know about Sophia Johnson. I have already had my investigators look into her, and they came up with nothing.”

Kyle chuckles confidently, a mischievous glint in his eye. Amateurs,” he scoffs. “I have ways of conducting an investigation that other people do not. But there must be more of a reason than the fact that she has rejected you.”

Alexander raises an eyebrow, astonished by the man’s presumption and brazen insolence. He considers walking away, but his pride gets the better of him. “The reasons I want Sophia Johnson investigated are none of your business,” he retorts. “I just need to know if you have the capabilities to accomplish what I need.”

Kyle smiles, realizing that he has uncovered at least one weakness when it comes to Alexander Stone. As the two men continue their conversation, the bustling gala carries on around them, guests mingling and the music filling the air.

“Kyle Vennillia, I thought that name sounded familiar. Aren’t you a journalist for The WeekDay?” Alexander asks, a moment of realization crossing his face.

“I am, among other things,” Kyle replies quickly and curtly, eager to redirect the conversation. Spotting Sophia across the room, he turns his head towards her direction. “To be honest with you, Alex, I have been watching Sophia since I arrived. There is something so alluring about her.”

Alexander keenly observes Kyle’s fascination with Sophia, a wave of imbalance washes over him.

Kyle turns back to Alexander, his smile never fading. “I will take the case. I will investigate Ms. Sophia Johnson for you, Mr. Stone,” he says confidently. “I’ll do it for you, but also for me. As I said, there is something very intriguing about that beauty.”

Still watching Sophia intently, Kyle continues, “I mean, look at her. Have you ever seen a woman so graceful and elegant? You can see from here that she simply commands the room. She is magnetic. Not to mention the way her hands and fingers moved across that violin… mmmm.”

Hearing Kyle’s continued interest in Sophia, Alexander’s anger grows. His back immediately tenses, and his hands unconsciously clench into tight fists.

“I want to make one thing perfectly clear from the beginning,” Alexander grimaces, stepping as close to Kyle as possible, “you will keep your distance from Sophia. I am warning you that if you go anywhere near her, there will be consequences.”

Taking notice of the change in Alexander’s demeanor, Kyle quickly reassures him, “Hey, man, I’m just joking. Seriously. I never mix work with pleasure. That’s a lesson I learned many years ago.”

Not entirely sure he believes Kyle, Alexander tries to relax and pivots his attention back to watching Sophia. “I expect daily reports and for you to answer any texts or calls I send you immediately. I want this done quickly but quietly.”

“Of course, for the money you are paying me, that will not be a concern at all,” Kyle replies confidently.

As the two sip their drinks and keep their eyes on Sophia from afar, they notice a younger man approaching her. Kyle considers making a flippant comment, but after Alexander’s last reaction to his joke, he decides against it.

Instead, Kyle says, “I will do my very best to unravel all the secrets that are wrapped up in the background of Ms. Sophia Johnson.”

Alexander nods, appreciating the confidence and dedication of his newfound informant. Despite his reservations, he is eager to see what Kyle will uncover about Sophia. He knows that knowledge is power in the business world, and he is determined to gain an edge over Sophia.

“I expect nothing less,” Alexander responds, maintaining a stoic expression.

From across the room, Alexander and Kyle notice that another man has entered into the conversation with Sophia and the young man. The look on her face indicates that she is not pleased with the intrusion.

After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 26

#26 “You Arrived Just in Time.”

Sophia tiredly looks around the room for Benjamin. It has been a long evening, and she is ready to return to her apartment, have a glass of red wine, and snuggle up in bed. Not seeing Benjamin, she orders another glass of champagne from the bar and takes the corner seat.

“Hello,” a voice says from a man taking the seat next to her. “I would offer to buy your drink, but these shindigs with their open bar really damage my pick- up lines.” The man laughs, obviously delighted with his joke.

Sophia turns to him, offers a polite but dismissive smile, and pulls out her phone to check emails. The man does not take the hint and continues, “You don’t need to be intimidated. I am just like any other guy.”

“Excuse me?” Sophia questions. Moving closer to Sophia, the man chuckles, “Yes, I am THAT Davis Reeceman.”

“Who?” Sophia asks, feigning ignorance. She, of course, has heard of the extremely popular celebrity but is not about to humor his arrogance.

“Oh, come on. I’m Davis Reeceman, star of the action movies trilogy, ‘The Spy Guy.’ I am sure you have heard of me.” Davis states, irritated that she does not appear impressed. Looking him coldly in the eyes, Sophia gently replies, “I’m sorry, I don’t frankly keep up with movies.”

“That’s OK, you can come back to my place, and I can give you a private show, “Davis leers, running his fingers across her bare shoulder.

Sophia shivers in disgust and says, “I am actually waiting for my date. Then we are leaving.” As Sophia stands up to leave, Davis seizes her arm, “Hey there, sweetheart, no need to run off.”

“Let go of me,” Sophia states firmly, her patience gone with the rude celebrity. She does not tolerate unwanted advances and will not allow anyone to disrespect her personal space.

“The lady said to let go of her, and I suggest you do that immediately,” a deep voice says from behind Sophia. Davis rises, his hands still locked around Sophia’s wrists. “I am sure the lady would rather leave with me than stay at this boring, old people party.”

Sophia’s wrists are beginning to hurt as she now forcefully tries to pull away from Davis. The stranger, noticing her struggle, steps between her and Davis, forcing Davis to release his grip from her wrists.

“I can assure you the lady would prefer to stay here with distinguished, mature, affluent individuals than go anywhere with a nouveau-rich, ignorant, presumptuous child,” the stranger calmly responds.

Davis, aware he is outmatched but unwilling to yield in the argument, raises his voice, “Perhaps you and I should step outside so this child can teach you how the novel-rich, or whatever it is you said, does it.”

Still rubbing her wrists, Sophia is impressed and intrigued by the stranger. Even though he appears very calm and casual in his appearance and tone, an undeniably intimidating presence oozes from him.

The stranger takes a final step closer to Davis, closing all the open space between the two men. “I will ask you one more time, nicely, to leave. Then I will forcibly remove you.” His voice carries a steely edge, leaving no doubt about his intentions.

At that moment, Alexander and Kyle saunter up to a table just a few steps from the ensuing argument. Sophia can’t help but roll her eyes in annoyance at the sight of Alexander, but his face reflects surprise and shock as he takes in the situation.

“Michael Bayell, of all people,” Alexander mutters to himself, recognizing the stranger who has come to Sophia’s rescue. Michael Bayell, his longtime adversary and someone with whom he has a complicated history.

Alexander and Kyle maintain a cautious distance from the heated exchange as the confrontation unfolds. Kyle can’t resist encouraging Alexander to take advantage of the situation “What are you doing, man? This is the perfect chance to show that guy who’s boss and impress Soph with some razzle- dazzle,” Kyle proposes with a grin.

Alexander pays little attention to Kyle’s goading, except to retort, “Don’t call her that.” He concentrates on Sophia, whose well-being and safety are his primary concerns.

Meanwhile, Emily, drawn by the raised voices, approaches Alexander. Trying to lighten the tension and capture Alexander’s attention, she quips, “It isn’t a party unless there’s a fistfight, right?” Kyle chuckles in agreement, but Alexander remains unfazed, never diverting his attention from Sophia.

Knowing he’s no match for the composed and imposing figure that is Michael, Davis takes a step back and begrudgingly gives up the fight. “Fine, whatever. She’s not worth it anyway,” he mutters, shooting a final glare at Sophia before storming away.

Once Davis is gone, Michael turns to Sophia with genuine concern in his eyes. “Are you alright?” he asks, his voice soft and caring.

Sophia nods, still feeling a bit shaken but grateful for Michael’s timely intervention. “Yes, thank you. You arrived just in time.”

With a warm smile, Michael introduces himself, “My name is Michael, by the way.” “Sophia,” she replies, returning the smile. “Nice to meet you, Michael.”

Concerned for her well-being, Michael gently inspects her wrists in his strong hands. “They don’t look like they will bruise. That’s a good thing,” he reassures her, rubbing the inside of each wrist with his thumb.

Despite not being averse to the touch of this stranger, Sophia still withdraws her hand. She keeps her eyes locked with Michael’s deep brown eyes. She feels that this person’s accompany will more or less be intriguing.

“Have a seat,” Michael suggests, pulling out a barstool for her. “I heard you were waiting for your date. I would love to keep you company until he arrives, if that’s alright with you, Sophia?”

Sophia smiles gratefully and accepts the offer, taking the seat and a fresh glass of champagne from the bartender. Michael settles onto the stool beside her, ensuring their knees touch slightly as they sit.

Alexander observes the interaction between Sophia and Michael from his vantage point at a nearby table. He notices the smug smile on Michael’s face and how he gently brushes Sophia’s hair off her shoulder, all while maintaining eye contact with Alexander.

Alexander can’t help but return the same smug smile with a mix of anger and understanding.

He knows Michael all too well, aware that Michael’s actions were driven not by a genuine desire to help Sophia but by the grudge he holds against Alexander and his family, a grudge that hasn’t dissipated with time.

#27″She would be Mine, Not Yours.

“I saw your performance tonight,” Michael says, a warm smile crossing his face as he sits beside Sophia. “It was quite impressive.” The compliment makes Sophia slightly blush, but she musters a grateful smile and replies, “Thank you.”

“I was immediately impressed by the way you can navigate the fingerboard with such fluidity, and your bowing technique is equally impressive,” Michael continues. Surprised by his knowledge of violin playing techniques, Sophia asks, Really? Do you play?”

He chuckles softly. “No, but I have spent a great deal of time in Prague, which I am sure you know is where the Smetana Hall is.”

Sophia nods, impressed that he knows the prestigious classical music festivals held there. “Yes, I’ve attended some of those concerts before,” she admits. Their conversation flows, and time flies. by as they talk about music and their shared fondness for classical

performances. But as the minutes pass, Sophia notices that the once bustling ballroom is gradually emptying, and the staff is starting to clean up the room.

“Well, it looks like the party is over,” she remarks, glancing around at the dwindling crowd. “It appears so,” Michael agrees. ” Perhaps I can walk you to the door.”

“Yes, I told my date I would let him. know when to pick me up,” Sophia states as she gathers her purse. Sophia is charmed by his politeness. With a soft smile, Sophia nods, accepting the arm he offers, and they begin to make their way toward the entrance.

Sophia spots Alexander standing near the coat check room as they reach the front door. She can feel her heart race slightly, hoping to avoid another conversation with him tonight. But before Sophia can figure out a way to slip away unnoticed, Michael asks her for her check number and offers to get her coat. Relieved, she hands him the ticket.

Sophia walks towards the door, and as she opens it, a gust of wind and rain greets her. It’s pouring outside, and she’s glad she won’t face the downpour without her coat.

However, as Michael gathers their coats, Alexander hovers near him. ” Michael, I see that you and Sophia seem to be getting along,” Alexander says with a tinge of suspicion. Michael holds a calm look and replies, ” Yes, Ms. Johnson and I had an enjoyable conversation.”

Alexander presses on, “And I suppose that has nothing to do with the situation between you and me?”

Feigning innocence, Michael retorts, Alexander, I have no idea what you are talking about.” Alexander shifts closer to him, his voice quiet and intense, “I see no reason to involve Sophia in our situation.”

“I assure you,” Michael responds firmly, “Ms. Johnson and I had a lovely conversation, and I am simply seeing her off.” He steps away from Alexander and approaches Sophia. “Besides,” he adds, “look at this weather. It’s important that Ms. Johnson gets home safely.”

With an unyielding resolution, Alexander states, “I think I should have my driver take Ms. Johnson home. My apartment is very close to hers. It just makes more sense.”

Sophia’s heart sinks at the thought of being alone with Alexander, and she quickly replies, “Benjamin has offered to drive me home. Thank you, though.”

But Alexander is persistent, and his following words are firmer than he intended, “No, I mean, no need. With this weather, driving us home would be much safer with my driver. Plus, Benjamin lives all the way uptown; he would need to drive an extra hour back afterward.”

As much as Sophia dreads spending more time with Alexander tonight, she knows he’s right about the weather and the practicality of the situation. Reluctantly, she nods in agreement.

“Let me call Benjamin and tell him the plan,” Sophia says, stepping away to make the call. Over the phone, she explains the plans change to Benjamin, trying to hide the nervousness in her voice. She knows he’s a caring friend who worries about her and doesn’t want him to sense her unease.

“Soph, are you sure you’re okay?” Benjamin asks, picking up on the anxious undertone in her voice. Sophia takes a deep breath, trying to soothe him, “Yes, I assure you I am perfectly fine.”

But the memories of her father’s tragic car accident resurface, and apprehension grips her heart. Tonight’s weather, so reminiscent of that fateful day, brings back the haunting memories. Since then, whenever the weather turns bad, she can’t help but feel uneasy.

Benjamin senses that something is off and persists, “You sound edgy. I’m a little worried about you.” Sophia hesitates momentarily, torn between opening up to her friend and keeping her emotions guarded.

“I’ll be honest,” she finally admits, 11 this weather… it brings back memories I’d rather forget.” What she doesn’t add to the conversation is that her father had a terrible car accident on a day like this. It was traumatic, and now, dread she can’t shake the feeling of every time it’s stormy. She takes a moment to collect herself, feeling vulnerable but grateful for Benjamin’s concern.

“I appreciate your offer to drive me home, but I think being with Alexander’s driver might be safer,” she says, trying to find some comfort in the alternative.

Benjamin’s tone softens with kindness, “I understand, Soph. If you think it’s best, do what makes you feel safer. Just promise you’ll call me when you get home, okay?”

Sophia manages a small smile. “I promise,” she replies, her voice steadier now. “Thank you for understanding.”

As Alexander’s car pulls up, he swiftly hustles Sophia into the back seat, shielding her from the pouring rain with an umbrella. As she settles in, he says, “I’ll be just a moment. There’s something I forgot to tell Michael.”

Sophia watches anxiously as Alexander and Michael huddle closely under the awning of the building. Despite the rain, she strains to hear their conversation, but their words remain muffled and incomprehensible.

She is sure she heard Micheal say “my brother” to Alexander right before the car door shut. Her mind begins to wonder curiously. However, the tension in their body language is evident, and it’s clear that the conversation is far from pleasant.

Alexander approaches Michael with a stern look on his face. “Don’t forget what I said. Stay away from Sophia,” he warns.

Michael chuckles, almost mocking, and replies, “I didn’t realize until now how interested you are in Ms. Johnson. It’s pretty clear that you have feelings for the lady.”

“That’s not true,” Alexander insists. But Michael’s expression shifts from friendly to defiant as he looks directly at Alexander. “If you were Alex, I would date her just so you couldn’t have her. She would be mine, not yours.”

Alexander bristles at Michael’s words, Sophia is a person. Stop referring to her as a possession. I’ve cut you a lot of slack in the past, Michael, because we both were victims, but I caution you, my patience is wearing thin.”

With a dismissive laugh, Michael retorts, “Oh, please don’t bother doing me any favors. Here’s my promise to you-rest assured that I will make you and everyone you love pay for what you did to me. You owe me.”

Alexander’s anger reaches a boiling point as Michael continues his vicious remarks. Michael’s words cut deep, and it’s clear that he’s struck a nerve.

“You should be used to this though, Alex. Isn’t that what your mother did? Stealing someone else’s man was a talent she certainly possessed. As the son of a mistress, shouldn’t you be used to this kind of thing? What is that expression? Turnabout is fair play?”

Michael taunts.

Unable to control his fury any longer, Alexander lunges at Michael, grabbing him by the collar. “Shut up! Shut up right now!” he seethes.

But Michael laughs, breaking free from Alexander’s grasp with a smug look. He knows he’s hit a painful mark and revels in the satisfaction of getting under Alexander’s skin. With a curt smile, he says, “Nice running into you, Alexander. I’m sure we’ll meet again soon.”

As Michael turns to walk away, Alexander storms back to the car, his rage still palpable. He slams the door shut, and Sophia can sense that the conversation with Michael did not go well. She decides not to pry, not wishing to get involved, and sits quietly beside him.

The car starts to pull away, and as they leave the scene, Emily emerges from the shadows of the awning with her mother, Barbara.

“I’m not surprised,” Barbara comments with a sneer. “After that pathetic performance of yours tonight, Emily, it’s no wonder he would choose to leave with someone far superior.”

Tears well up in Emily’s eyes as the weight of her mother’s disapproval and witnessing Alexander driving off with Sophia crushes her. Barbara continues to berate Emily, her voice dripping with disdain. “It’s utterly disgraceful that you couldn’t even manage to do a decent job.”

Emily’s heart seethes with a mixture of rage and sadness. “I know, mother,” she replies through gritted teeth.

“That woman has ruined everything for me. It’s all because of her that Alexander has been treating me like this. I hate her. ”

Barbara pats Emily’s head condescendingly. However, Emily’s anger intensifies as she watches Alexander’s car disappearing down the road. Determination takes hold, and she looks at her mother with fierce intensity.

“Since she walked into our lives, Sophia has been making a spectacle of herself,” Emily declares, her tone laced with bitterness. “She’s stolen all the spotlight and everything that was rightfully mine, including Alex.”

Barbara leans closer and whispers, her voice filled with intrigue, “So what exactly are you planning to do about it?

As the car’s tail lights fade away, Emily’s expression hardens. “Trust me, “she replies in an icy tone, “I will stop at nothing to make Alexander mine.

Sophia Johnson will get exactly what she deserves.”

#28 “You Can Trust Me.”

Sophia briefly glances at Alexander, attempting to read his emotions, but her main focus remains on the driver navigating the challenging road and weather conditions. With a polite nod, she refrains from probing further or pushing for more information.

Alexander takes a moment to reflect, seemingly contemplating his choice of words about Michael. However, as he begins to speak, his words flow resolutely.

“Let me be clear, Michael is far from being a kind individual,” he confesses, his words deliberate and unwavering. We harbor unresolved conflicts from our history. I strongly advise you to keep your distance from him.”

Recognizing the potential impact of his authoritative delivery, he swiftly interjects, “To put it mildly, I strongly urge you to stay away from him. Believe me when I say it is genuinely in your best interest.”

Sophia shifts her attention from the road to Alexander, offering him a reassuring smile. However, deep down, she knows she won’t be heeding his advice. He is the last person she would ever take advice from.

As her focus returns to the road, Alexander’s concern becomes more transparent. Breaking the silence, he asks, “Is everything okay? You seem… off.”

Sophia takes a moment to gather her thoughts before responding. She appreciates his concern but can’t shake off her emotions entirely. “It’s just the storm,” she replies, her voice steady despite the lingering unease. “I’ll be alright.”

Alexander glances at her, his concern is evident in his eyes. “You don’t have to pretend with me, you know,” he says, his tone softens. “If something is bothering you, you can talk to me.”

Sophia, genuinely touched by his understanding, says, “It’s just… the thunderstorms have always made me a bit uneasy. But I’ll manage.”

Alexander nods in understanding, and they drive in companionable silence for a moment. The rain continues to drum against the car’s roof, providing a rhythmic backdrop to their conversation.

“I appreciate your concern,” Sophia finally adds, her voice softer. “But I’ll be okay. It’s just one of those things, you know?”

“Of course,” Alexander replies, his tone warm. Sophia offers him a grateful smile, touched by his genuine care. But before Sophia can answer, the blinding headlights of an approaching car beam directly into their vehicle. The sudden brightness startles her, and her heart leaps into her throat, pounding with fear.

Instinctively, she reaches for Alexander’s hand, seeking comfort and reassurance amid her growing panic. “I can feel your heart racing,” Alexander says, holding her hand firmly. “Seriously, are you okay?”

Sophia’s voice catches in her throat, and she can’t find the words to respond. She merely shakes her head, holding on tightly to Alexander’s hand, her fingers interlocked with his.

Outside, the rain continues to pour relentlessly, further obscuring their vision. The sound of raindrops on the car roof is drowned out by the thumping of Sophia’s heart, echoing loudly in her ears.

“Just take a deep breath,” Alexander coaches, his voice steady and calming. He gently squeezes her hand as if to remind her she’s not alone in this frightening moment.

Suddenly, another car with its high beam headlights on narrowly misses colliding with them. The vehicle swerves past at the last moment, and Alexander instinctively moves closer to Sophia, wrapping his arms around her protectively.

He holds her close, his touch bringing a sense of warmth and safety. Whispering with a mix of nervousness and concern, he says, “It’s okay. I promise.” Slowly, he pulls back to look into Sophia’s eyes.

Sophia feels a mix of emotions flooding through her fear, vulnerability, and gratitude. She nods, finding her voice again. “Yes, just give me a moment,” she manages to reply, her voice slightly shaky.

Taking a deep breath, she tries to steady her nerves, taking in the scent of rain and the warmth of Alexander’s embrace. Gradually, her heart rate begins to slow, and she starts feeling a sense of calm.

As they continue their journey, the storm outside continues to rage.

As Sophia finds solace in Alexander’s embrace, her racing heart gradually begins to steady, and a sense of calm washes over her. But then, a sudden realization hits her – their position feels overly intimate, especially when she accidentally brushes against Alexander’s solid chest and abs in her flustered state. Feeling a tinge of embarrassment, she awkwardly loosens her grip, creating a subtle but perceptible physical distance between them.

Still concerned, Alexander asks, “Is it the storm? Is it something from your past? Do you have any traumatic memories that the storm might have triggered?”

“No,” Sophia says defiantly, trying to dismiss any suggestion of vulnerability and discussion of her past. “Don’t be ridiculous.” But just as the words escape her lips, a loud clap of thunder rumbles above them, and she instinctively grabs onto Alexander’s arms again for comfort.

A mischievous grin spreads across Alexander’s face as he playfully teases, “Sure, you aren’t bothered by storms at all. That would be ridiculous for anyone to suggest.”

Sophia smiles, despite herself, and admits, “Okay, maybe I have a small fear of thunder.”

As another crack of thunder reverberates through the sky, Alexander can’t resist teasing her further. “I’m surprised that Ms. Johnson actually has a fear of something. It’s nice to know that you’re not totally perfect.”

“I assure you I am not perfect,” Sophia retorts. Alexander continues to playfully poke fun at her, saying, “You know, a great business strategy, for me at least, would be to tell everyone that you’re scared of thunder. That way, they’d all know only to hold business meetings with you when there’s a storm.” He laughs, but Sophia glares at him, obviously irritated and offended.

Seeing her displeasure, Alexander quickly adds, “I’m kidding. Honestly, I’m just teasing you. Just getting back at you a little bit. I promise your secret is safe with me.”

Sophia’s composure, which she had gradually regained, is swiftly replaced by a surge of anger. She turns to Alexander, her eyes flashing with fury, and snaps, “I would expect you not to tell anyone. In fact, I demand that you do not breathe a word of this to anyone.

Taken aback by the intensity of her anger, Alexander raises his hands in a gesture of surrender. “Hey, hey, I promise I won’t say a thing,” he responds, his voice calm but tinged with concern. “You can trust me.”

#29 “Tell Me How You Really Feel”

Seeing that Sophia is still looking at him with contempt, Alexander tries reassuring her, “I guarantee you I was just joking. I will not say a word to anyone.”

Sophia nods her head in acknowledgment, but the apprehension still lingers in her eyes. As she starts to turn her gaze out the window, Alexander presses on. “Look, I know that you very obvious.”@ don’t like me. That’s Shifting back to face him, Sophia holds his gaze, her expression guarded. She remains silent, waiting for him to continue.

“Well, at least you’re not denying it,” Alexander remarks softly. “Can you at least tell me what I did to deserve such distaste from you?”

Sophia chuckles, a mix of exasperation and amusement in her voice. “Are you serious?” she asks incredulously.

“Yes,” Alexander replies sincerely. “I feel like I deserve an explanation for all the animosity.”

Sophia takes a moment to collect her thoughts before responding, her tone becoming more assertive. “You know that Evelyn Crimms is my best friend,” she begins. “And the way you handled the situation with her father and his bank, it’s not only ridiculous and immature, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it borders on unethical.”

Taken aback by the sharpness of Sophia’s words, Alexander instinctively leans back slightly in the car. “Tell me how you really feel,” he comments.

“You asked,” Sophia retorts curtly, not backing down.

“So, is that it?” Alexander inquires, trying to understand her perspective. ” Is that the only reason why you detest me so much?”

Sophia rolls her eyes, clearly annoyed. That and other reasons,” she replies.

“Such as?” Alexander prods, wanting to know more. “Well, the business of giving Barbara Williams the collaboration is also unsettling,” Sophia reveals. Alexander smirks slightly as if he anticipated this response. “Aha,” he says with a hint of satisfaction.

“What?” Sophia questions, curious about his reaction.

“I figured you had an issue with my relationship with the Williams family,” Alexander replies, the smug smile on his face growing.

Sophia’s frustration is evident as she clarifies, “I absolutely do not care one bit about your relationship with the Williams family or any family for that matter. You asked for some of my reasons, and I gave them.’

Their conversation hangs in the air for a moment, tension swirling between them. Breaking the silence, Alexander addresses the intriguing discovery he made about Sophia. “I was stunned to discover your dual identity as a musician and lawyer. How long have you played?” he inquires.

Sophia, instead of answering his question, decides to turn the tables on him. “How do you know Michael?” she asks. “It seems like the two of you have quite the past.”

Alexander maintains his composure, holding Sophia’s gaze firmly. He hesitates momentarily before responding with surprising candor, Michael is my half-brother. We have different mothers.”

The statement hangs in the air, leaving Sophia momentarily stunned by Alexander’s openness. Despite her shock, she doesn’t let it break her composed demeanor.

“I see,” she says calmly, absorbing the new information. “It must be quite a complicated relationship.”

Alexander nods in agreement, the weight of the past evident in his eyes.” Complicated would be an understatement,’ ” he admits. “We’ve had our share of ups and downs over the years.”

As the car moves through the rain, their conversation lingers in the air. As the car approaches Sophia’s apartment building, they notice the building is completely dark. The driver pulls next to the curb and offers to check with the doorman about the situation.

Grateful for the respite from the still torrential rain, Sophia accepts the driver’s offer. She and Alexander watch as the driver briefly converses with the doorman. The driver quickly returns to the car, conveying the news, “It seems that the storm has knocked out all the electricity and internet in your building. The doorman doesn’t know when it will be restored.”

Exhaustion and irritation wash over Sophia’s face. After her night, she only wants to crawl into bed and sleep. She lets out a long sigh and thanks the driver for checking.

Just as Sophia turns to Alexander, ready to express her gratitude for the ride, he speaks up. “Look, my apartment building has an independent backup generator, so we still have power. If you feel comfortable, you are more than welcome to come to my place. I have a guest room and hot water.”

Sophia hesitates, torn between not wanting to spend the night at Alexander Stone’s place and not wanting to endure a night in her apartment without power or hot water.

“I promise to be a complete gentleman, “Alexander reassures her quickly, sensing her uncertainty. “In fact, I have some work I need to attend to, so I won’t bother you at all. But again, only if you’re comfortable with the idea.”

“I greatly appreciate it, Alexander. Thank you,” Sophia eventually agrees, appreciating his offer of a solution. “I think I will take you up on the offer.”

With a small smile, Alexander instructs the driver to head to his apartment building. As the car moves through the rain-soaked streets once more, Sophia can’t help but feel a mix of emotions- relief for having a comfortable place to stay and a flicker of curiosity.

As they arrive at Alexander’s building, Sophia is welcomed by the warm glow of lights, contrasting with the dark and stormy night outside. She follows him into the building, grateful for the sense of shelter it provides.

He leads Sophia to the guest room in his apartment, ensuring she has everything she needs. The soft glow of lamps fills the space, offering a warm and inviting ambiance contrasting with the storm still raging outside. As Sophia steps into the cozy room, she immediately feels a sense of comfort wash over her. The bed is neatly made, and fresh linens and fluffy pillows beckon her to relax.

“Well, as I said, I have some work to do. Please make yourself comfortable, and do not hesitate to ask for anything you need,” Alexander says, his voice sincere and warm.

Sophia nods, grateful for his hospitality. “Thank you, Alexander. I appreciate everything,” she replies with a small smile.

After he closes the door, Sophia takes a moment to collect herself. The events of the evening whirl through her mind, leaving her feeling both amazed and bewildered. Her emotions are in a whirlwind, and she knows she needs a moment of solitude to process it all.

Feeling a sense of gratitude towards Alexander, Sophia decides to express her appreciation. She lies back on the king-size bed, reaching for her phone. Her fingers dance across the screen as she types a message to him, “Thank you so much for your amazing efforts this evening. It is deeply appreciated.” A sense of relief washes over her as she hits send.

Exhaustion finally overtakes her, and Sophia falls asleep, her mind filled with thoughts of the unexpected twists and turns that the night had brought her.

After the Divorce: Crushed on My Lawyer Ex-wife Chapter 30

#30 “Are You in A Relationship?”

The soft morning light filters into the room, gently coaxing Sophia awake in Alexander’s apartment. The previous night’s events still echo in her thoughts as she opens her eyes, taking in her surroundings within the guest room’s comforting embrace.

As the remnants of sleep recede, Sophia’s senses come alive to the peculiar quietness of the apartment. She wonders where Alexander might be. With a quiet and curious determination, she softly opens the bedroom door and peers into the hallway, calling his name with a gentle tone.

“Alexander?” she murmurs, her voice echoing in the space. The scent of sizzling bacon suddenly wafts towards her, pulling her in a specific direction. She follows the mouthwatering aroma, allowing it to guide her toward the source.

The kitchen greets her with the promise of a delicious morning meal. A meticulously arranged breakfast is laid out on the granite countertop- scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and fresh fruit presented on a plate. Adjacent to the plate lies a note capturing her attention. She reaches for it, her fingers lightly brushing the paper as she reads the message:

Enjoy breakfast, and take your time. I had to leave early for work-Alexander.

A smile tugs at the corner of her lips as she absorbs his considerate gesture. With the sun casting its warmth and light throughout the apartment, she is drawn to the allure of a leisurely morning on the terrace.

Sophia prepares a cup of coffee, the aroma mingling with the scent of her breakfast, and carries both to the inviting outdoor space. As she settles onto a comfortable chair, the sun’s embrace envelops her, creating a sense of serenity that contrasts with the stormy night she had experienced.

Savoring each bite of her breakfast and each sip of her coffee, Sophia allows herself to be present at the moment. The bustling city around her pauses, granting her a brief respite from the demands of her life. She contemplates the events that led her to this morning -meeting Alexander, sharing an unexpected journey, and finding solace. in his apartment.

After finishing her meal, Sophia readies herself to face the day ahead. Once Sophia arrives at her office, Benjamin is already waiting in her office for her.

“Fun night?” he questions as Sophia sits at her desk and opens her laptop.

“Fun is not the word I would use to describe it,” Sophia replies. “So, Alexander Stone took you home,” Benjamin says with a raised eyebrow, that was surprising.”

Not interested in rehashing the night events, Sophia replies, “As I told you last night, it was the safest and most convenient option. Nothing else.”

“Sure,” Benjamin replies with a laugh.

“Is that why you are here?” Sophia asks, “Because if it is, I am swamped, and you can see yourself out.”

“Well, your escapades with Mr. Stone is not why I am here,” Benjamin retorts. There is actually something that you need to know.”

Sophia looks up from her computer, OK, sounds serious. Go ahead.”

“I found out this morning that someone is digging around about you,” Benjamin informs Sophia. With a slight laugh, Sophia responds, ” Is that all?”

“Aren’t you worried that people might found out about who you are?” Benjamin quickly questions.

Sophia dismisses Benjamin’s cautionary words with a nonchalant wave of her hand. She has never been one to fret over her multiple identities being discovered by others. The complexity of her life, woven with threads of music and law, has shaped her into a person who embraces the enigmatic.

“I appreciate your concern, Ben,” she says, flashing a reassuring smile, “but honestly, I don’t think anyone cares enough to dig into my personal affairs. My music and my work as a lawyer are two separate worlds.”

Benjamin’s expression remains skeptical. He leans forward, his concern evident in his eyes. “You should be careful, Sophia. Some are skilled at unraveling secrets, especially in our line of work.”

“I hear you,” Sophia acknowledges, her voice softening. She values Benjamin’s friendship and his protective nature, even if she doesn’t always share his level of caution. Changing the subject, she asks, “And what about this Michael character? Why the strong warning?”

Benjamin’s demeanor shifts to one of seriousness. “Michael is a different breed, Sophia. He’s not just ruthless in business; he’s relentless in his pursuit of power. He’s known for using any means necessary to get what he wants.

Sophia raises an eyebrow, intrigued by Benjamin’s description. “Give me an example.”

Benjamin leans in, his voice dropping to a confidential tone. “He once sent some of his relatives to prison to gain control of a family-owned company. He plays the game at a whole different level.”

Sophia’s eyes widen in surprise, absorbing the gravity of Benjamin’s words. She hadn’t anticipated such a dark aspect to Michael’s character.” That’s… intense.”

“Exactly,” Benjamin replies, his expression grave. “So, I’m just advising you to keep your distance from him. People like Michael don’t hesitate to use others for their own gain.”

Sophia lets Benjamin’s words sink in, her thoughts churning. She appreciates his concern, and part of her acknowledges the wisdom in his advice. However, she also recognizes her instincts, guiding her through countless challenges.

“Thank you for looking out for me, Ben, ‘she finally says, reaching out to briefly squeeze his hand. “I’ll keep what you’ve said in mind.”

As they part ways, Sophia’s mind is a swirl of thoughts-about her intricate life, the enigmatic Michael, and the delicate balance between trust and caution. The city’s rhythm envelops her as she continues on her path, ready to face whatever twists and turns await her on the road ahead

As the days unfold, life continues to weave its intricate patterns for Sophia. She finds herself facing another unexpected encounter-this time with Michael. His charm lingers in the air as he extends an invitation for lunch. Sophia’s smile is polite but firm as she declines, citing her busy schedule.

Undeterred, Michael’s persistence remains evident as he suggests dinner instead. Sophia maintains her resolve, her voice unwavering, “Michael, I appreciate the offers, but I think we should have a straightforward conversation.”

Michael’s expression shifts slightly, curiosity mingling with intrigue. “Fair enough,” he concedes, leaning casually against a railing.

Their conversation is honest yet tinged with an undeniable undercurrent of tension. They both find each other intriguing, but genuine affection is absent. As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the city in shades of dusk, Michael’s question hangs in the air.

“Are you in a relationship, Sophia?”

Her response is as blunt as it is honest. “No, I’m not.”

With that confirmation, Michael’s next inquiry lands like a stone cast into still waters. “And how do you feel about Alexander?”

Sophia’s guard subtly tightens, her gaze steady. She senses a hidden motive behind his question, a current she’s wary of entering. She’s been informed of the potential grudge between Michael and Alexander, a piece of information that casts doubt on his intentions.

“Michael, let’s be clear. I’m not interested if you’re trying to involve me in any personal issues between you and Alexander. I won’t be used as a pawn in your games.”

Michael’s mask falters momentarily, his eyes narrowing. But he quickly regains his composure, his features smoothing into an unreadable facade.” Fair enough,” he echoes her words, his tone neutral.

Sophia’s stance remains resolute, her voice firm. “I’d appreciate it if we could keep our interactions professional and straightforward.”

Her words hang in the air, a clear boundary drawn. Despite the intrigue that might linger, Sophia’s priority is protecting herself from undue complications. With a nod, she leaves Michael behind, the city’s pulse surrounding her once again as she moves.
