Chapter 416: Evan’s Come Back

After Keira left her room, Rose lay down on the bed. She felt a little sleepy after taking medicine. Just before she entered her dreamland, a knock on the door woke her up.

She felt tired but still couldn’t stop her family from coming, could she?

"Coming in!" Her voice sounded hoarse.

Soon the door slowly opened.

How surprised Rose was to see the man she had lately been missing entering the room, he looked fresh and healthy, and it made her feel happy.

A wide grin appeared on Rose’s face as she sat on her bed.

"Oh my God... Sam. You’re finally back on duty, huh!?" How Rose missed Sam. After a few months, this man was on leave to recover his leg after an accident in Vale City. "How’s your leg? Is it back to normal? Can you run again?" her eyes were on Sam’s feet, wanting to ensure he stood perfectly.

"Sam, why don’t you walk for a bit... I want to see if your leg is completely healed!"

Sam can only fulfill her wish. He walked over to the room. "Lady boss, don’t worry, my leg has healed since last month. But too bad, the big boss forbade me to go to the field." Sam stopped walking and stood again by the bed.

"That’s great, Sam!" Rose’s eyes lit up with happiness because Sam was finally able to work for her again. She felt more relaxed and safe when Sam took care of her. "I’m glad you’re back working for me now, Sam."

Sam’s face turns stiff. He hadn’t gotten permission from the boss yet, but he was desperate to take the field because he couldn’t imagine Lady Boss getting hurt.

"Boss, I need your help...."

Rose was surprised to hear Sam’s words. This was the first time this big man had asked her something.

"Help? Of course, I will... tell me what you want me to do?" Rose was slightly taken aback when she saw the glint of anxiety and fear in Sam’s eyes. Is Sam in trouble?

"I... have not received permission to return to work." He rubbed the back of his neck, continuing, "I volunteered to join Oscar after hearing you were after Keira’s kidnapper...."

"So y-you came to save us?" She was surprised. Since she woke up this morning after the accident, she has only heard what happened yesterday from her aunt Amanda. So, she didn’t know what happened after losing consciousness.

What’s more, she didn’t have time to look at her cell phone—more precisely, she didn’t know where her cell phone was. It seemed her parents had kept her bag—so she couldn’t read the news on the internet about yesterday’s incident.

The last thing she remembers; she shot and incapacitated Seth, after which she felt tired and slumped on the floor. Not a single memory emerged in her mind after she lost consciousness.

And, hearing Sam was present at the warehouse — to rescue her — somehow moved her.

This man is very loyal. He dared to ignore Evan’s orders.

Rose could only smile at this silly Sam.

"Yes, I’m coming. I took you to the hospital after I found you passed out...."

Sam recounted what he had seen in the bloody warehouse. He didn’t forget to praise her talent to slaughter all of them. And he also told her that Seth’s team took care of the case after they left. So, no one knew about Keira’s kidnapping and who killed all the gangsters in the warehouse.

"Wait, so you’re saying the warehouse is used to produce illegal drugs and storage?"

Rose was already suspicious when she entered the warehouse. She didn’t see anyone because all activity was underground, like whoever was in there was trying to hide something.

"Yes. That’s why the news appeared in the media; the Black Eagle team caught the drug syndicate." Sam chuckled when he saw his boss’s face looked so shocked. "You did a good job, boss... but you better do Oscar and me a favor. Because once the big boss finds out about this, he will punish us. Not only punished, but he might also kill us to let you get hurt like this...."

Instantly Rose’s body froze, remembering Evan.

Evan!? Where is he? She had not spoken to him since two days ago.

"S-Sam, please don’t tell Evan about this accident. He would definitely come back if he found out. I’m worried that his business plan in New York will be disrupted..." Rose panicked, but when she saw Sam’s wry smile, her heart sank at that moment.

"Damn it! He already knows!?"

"Lady Boss, it’s too late. Boss Evan already knows. He’s on his way here..." Sam took a deep breath. "I got a notification. His plane landed a few minutes ago..."

Before Sam met with Rose, he received a text from Gavin. He inform, Boss Evan, on the way to the hospital and he knew everything. That’s why Sam ran to this place to warn Rose.

"He knows? My husband is on his way here!? Sam, isn’t he still in New York?"

"Well, he knows everything, including your wound."

"Oh-my-god!! What to do..." Rose started to panic. Her husband would definitely overreact again. "Sam, you better leave now. Hide as far as you can. Take, Oscar too. Sorry, I can’t protect you guys. I am also in trouble. My husband will definitely punish me...."

"O-Okay, Lady Boss. I’ll be going now..." Sam was feeling depressed now. He had to hide until Boss Evan’s anger cooled down a bit.

"Take care of yourself, boss...." Before Sam could finish his words, an icy voice sounded from the door.

"Sam, step outside!"

Rose’s eyes widened in surprise to see Evan standing at the door, looking handsome in his long black coat. His face was serene, but she could see fire dancing in his eyes. He was furious!

Rose could only freeze in place, amazed to meet his eyes. Her mind is blank. However, there was a feeling of joy rising within her heart. Finally, the man she missed so much was back.

A loving smile gradually appeared on Rose’s face as Evan walked towards her.

"H-Hubby..."

Chapter 417: Send Him To The Coffin, Nail It Shut, And Bury It

"I’m sorry!!"

Evan’s gentle voice was like beautiful strings in Rose’s ears. She couldn’t take her eyes off him. Shortly after, her eyes felt warm, and tears began flowing down her cheeks. She cries.

She didn’t understand why she suddenly cried.

Was she too scared because she didn’t keep her promise to Evan to avoid getting hurt!?

Or did she really miss him that much!? She does not know.

The feelings she was feeling right now were foreign to her. There is a mix of sadness, fear, disappointment, and anger.

His apology made her heart tremble.

She lowered her head, trying to avoid Evan’s gaze—somehow, she felt so guilty looking into his eyes.

She could feel her husband trying to contain his anger—his eyes were soft on her, but inside, he was furious.

"Don’t say that. Instead, I should be the one apologizing for..."

Before Rose could finish her words, she felt Evan’s hand on her chin and lifted her face—their eyes met.

Evan’s eyes became unusually gentle, but there seemed to be a boiling emotion in that gentleness. He suddenly drew his head closer to her without giving her a chance to continue her words. He covered her rosy dry lips with his.

The sudden kiss brought all the thinking power in Rose’s brain back to zero, and she felt the unforeseen kiss blankly. She didn’t resist. She really misses him.

After a few seconds passed, his lips moved away from hers. Their foreheads were still touching. Their eyes met each other without talking. It was as if they were communicating with their eyes, so the room was quiet. The only sound that could be heard was the sound of hissing breath and the sound of medical equipment.

After a few minutes of silence, Evan’s anger slowly faded. His eyes returned to their softness. His gentle gaze could make Rose finally feel a little relieved.

Evan sat on the bed with his hand holding her healthy hand, "If something terrible happens to you. I will never forgive myself. So, please don’t ever do it again. I beg you! "

"Hubby, I will never do that again. I promise you...." Rose’s teary eyes met his. "I wish you were here on Christmas. I don’t like you staying there. But, I’m afraid to tell you, afraid you’ll rush back and leave your business there...."

"Silly girl! I am your husband... why do you still think like that?"

"I feel bad if, because of me, your work is interrupted..."

"There was a situation there, but everything is fine now. You don’t have to worry about my work. I already finished everything...."

Evan hurriedly returns to Astington after receiving the notification—Oscar asked for S Mission.

Only one thing crossed his mind: his wife was in trouble. There was no way Oscar had asked for this dangerous mission just because he was bored, right!?

Regardless of his health, he decided to return.

He brought all the necessary medical equipment and a group of doctors on their journey back to this country.

His surgery wasn’t completely healed yet, but if he was careful, his wife wouldn’t find out, and he would be fine. He didn’t want his wife to know that he had an accident.

"I’m glad to know that. Hubby, next time, I will follow wherever you go. I feel bad for deciding to stay here. If I had followed you there, this incident would not have happened..."

"Hmm... you should do that next time, my dear."

Evan rubs the hair on top of her head gently.

"Did you find out who did this kidnapping?" Evan shifted their conversation.

Instantly Rose’s face darkened. Of course, she knows!

"Archy Hester! That damn kid is like a cockroach. Hard to get rid of. It looks like he should be thrown into prison and let him rot until death comes knocking on his door..."

"So you know." Evan smiled.

Rose nodded. She found it out from that idiot Seth - she hoped Sean would torture him for what he did to Keira.

"Don’t worry this time. I take this very personally. I will send that fool straight to the coffin, nail it shut, and bury it. You just need to ask Oliver to destroy the old man. That old man spoils his grandson very much."

"Yes, he favors Archy over Oliver..." Rose secretly took a deep breath, feeling sorry for her best friend, who was treated so badly by his grandfather.

"Tell Oliver he needed to make his last blow. Take the company completely and declare he is the new owner of Hester Group. Let everyone know about it...."

Since the previous case, Evan wanted to clean up the Hester Group. But he restrained himself because his wife asked him not to act.

He respects his wife’s request simply because Oliver has been her best friend since they were young.

Rose was surprised to hear Evan’s suggestion. But she agreed with him.

This time Oliver needs to carry out a brutal attack. In the previous case, Oliver was too soft on Hester Group. He didn’t give a heavy blow to them, allowing Archy Hester to get revenge on him.

"I’ll call Oliver right away...." She also needed to talk to him about his relationship with Keira. She hoped the two of them had made up.

"Hmm... you have to. Wife, we will stay here for a few days, and before the new year, we will stay at your parent’s house to celebrate New Year’s Eve. How about that?"

Rose froze for a moment. She just remembered about her family, especially Aunty Amanda, who couldn’t wait to scold her husband.

"Hubby, you better find a way to calm my parents and Aunt Amanda. Especially Aunt, she blamed you for this incident...."

"Hahaha, it was right for her to do that. Don’t worry. Your aunt is easy to tame. I need to buy all the luxury products in her shop. She will definitely shut up!"

Rose was at a loss for words.

"Is my aunt that easy?"

"Yes... yes..." Evan chuckled. "As for your parents, they definitely won’t be mad at me if we stay at their house on New Year’s Eve. That’s why I’m telling you, we will go there after you are cleared to go home...."

"Wow!! You really are an expert strategist on how to handle your in-law." Rose laughs. "You know what to do to clean up your mess..." she couldn’t help giving a thumbs up to him.

"What about me? What are you going to do so that I won’t be angry anymore?"

Evan didn’t answer but lowered his head and kissed her lips.

Chapter 418: Cruel Boss

Time flies so fast. Today is the last day of December.

The day Rose had been waiting for. The doctor finally allowed her to go home.

Actually, two days ago, Rose was allowed to go home. But Evan was too worried about her hand. So, he asked the doctor to extend her stay at the hospital to this day.

During her hospitalization, Rose was spoiled by her husband. He never left her wardroom at all. He took care of Rose independently. The doctors and nurses he needed only to check Rose’s condition.

While in the hospital, she was forbidden to touch her laptop and cell phone—her work was entrusted to Oliver. She could only watch movies or other entertainment programs. Not even business news and celebrity gossip were allowed.

Occasionally her family came to visit. So are her friends. However, their visiting time is limited, and without anyone staying.

This time, Evan seemed to want to repay his mistake by becoming a ’slave-husband’ to his wife.

However, even though Rose could be with Evan daily, she was getting tiresome; she felt stuffy just staying in the hospital room. Even though her room was not much different from the presidential suite in a five-star hotel, she still felt uncomfortable.

She wanted to breathe fresh air. Walking in the snow or sitting near the fireplace, sipping a cup of hot chocolate with her husband and parents.

"Are you so happy to go home?" Evan held his wife’s hand as they walked out of the room.

"Hmm... I’m so happy!!" Rose grinned at Evan as they entered the elevator.

"My pretty wife... your one arm is not yet healed. You must remember all the doctor’s instructions and what to avoid. If you don’t heed the doctor’s orders, I don’t mind if we have to stay in the hospital for the next few months..." Evan said softly, but Rose felt his words were her death sentence. Gosh!

"I know. Don’t worry." Rose smiled at him and then stroked her hand, which was still in a cast, as if to tell him that she would take care of her injured hand so it would heal quickly.

Rose does hope her hands will quickly heal because it is very uncomfortable to carry out daily activities in these conditions. Even for bathing and doing her personal needs, she had to be assisted by Evan. Somehow she felt uneasy burdening Evan every day.

"That’s good if you remember."

Later...

They arrive at the hospital lobby and meet Gavin, who picks them up.

Rose remembered that she had been in the hospital for the past few days but she never saw Sam and Oscar, only Evan stayed by her side. And this would be the first time she saw Gavin after some time.

She glanced at Evan with a restless mind. "Did you send Sam and Oscar somewhere? Can you forgive them? My incident has nothing to do with them. Instead, you should cherish them for helping me...." she suspected Evan punished them, and she was sorry for them.

"Quick, get in the car. It’s so cold...." Evan opened the car door and motioned for her to sit in the backseat.

She was speechless.

This guy, it’s so smooth to change the subject, huh!

Rose didn’t protest and immediately got into the car. It’s been freezing since the snow fell heavily last night. Only the road passed by the vehicle is not covered with snow. The rest, as far as the eye can see, only the expanse of snow is visible. Looks beautiful but makes the body freeze.

"Can you answer me?" Rose asked again as their car slowly moved. Leaving the hospital heading to North Mountain, to her parent’s residence.

Today, the Spencer and Collins Families will have dinner at Nicholas Spencer’s house. They would celebrate New Year’s eve and welcome Rose out of the hospital.

Evan, who was enjoying the snow outside, turned his face towards Rose. He raised his brow before saying, "Wife, I didn’t punish them. Why should I? As you said, they’re innocent...."

Hearing Evan’s calm voice still made Rose doubt his answer. "But why haven’t I seen them these past few days?"

Evan chuckled. He gently ran his hand through her hair, saying, "Do you think your husband is that cruel? I’m not a cruel boss to them, dear... If you don’t believe me, you can ask Gavin."

Gavin swallowed hard.

His boss, indeed, is not cruel. He is more of a meticulous and stern boss! He nearly never tolerated mistakes. And his reward for those who made one is challenging. Remembered clearly in Gavin’s mind; The first year as Evan’s assistant, he made a small mistake. Evan sent him to hike the Himalayas alone, citing it as a form of training.

In his second year, he made another mistake, and Evan sent him off into the desert for the same reason, physical training.

Recently, when he made a mistake, Evan punished him for working for a month without a single day off. Boss, how can you claim that you are not an evil boss?

"Boss, please don’t drag me into this conversation. Lady Boss will immediately know if I open my mouth because I am a horrible person to hide your secrets." Gavin could only speak in his heart, pretending not to hear their conversation.

But...

Looks like today isn’t his lucky day—He heard Lady Boss ask him,

"Gavin, is that true?" Her voice sounded kind. But as soon as Gavin caught a glimpse of her face from the rearview mirror, his body felt stiff—her eyes were so sharp, looking at him as if she wanted to dig into his brain.

Just before Gavin wanted to expose his big boss, he could feel the back of his neck go cold. He could guess that the big boss was staring at him intently right now.

Gavin suddenly wanted to disappear from the car—being asked to choose between two rulers made his head feel dizzy.

After thinking fast, Gavin finally chose to play save...

Chapter 419: Not Alone Anymore

"Lady Boss, of course... Boss Evan is the best boss I have ever known. I have worked for him since I was a teenager. And to this day, I have never thought of stopping working for him." What Gavin said this time came from the bottom of his heart.

Even though his big boss sometimes can be irrational, he played an essential role in his life.

"Wife, you heard that!? Well, I’m a good boss for them. I would never hurt them." There was a proud smile that framed Evan’s face.

This time, he didn’t punish Oscar and Sam — what his wife said was the right thing, and neither of them deserved to be punished. However, Oscar is currently busy investigating the assault case that occurred in Brooklyn. And as for Sam, he is still recovering. He won’t be back in action until next year.

Until Sam returns from his leave, Evan will stay to protect his wife. He has delegated all his work to executives in the company. He would never make a second mistake, leaving her alone.

Hearing Evan’s words, Rose slowly looked at him — she silently chuckled. She knew Gavin was lying, but she was too lazy to play dumb with them. She would use her honey traps when they got home to force him to tell the truth.

She secretly made a plan in her mind as her eyes looked outside the window and amaze looking at the snow.

Before long...

Their car arrives at Rose’s parent’s house.

Rose was speechless when she saw her mother and father waiting for them at the main door.

"Why are they waiting outside in this freezing weather!?" She muttered as she wanted to open the door, but Evan held her back.

"Wait! I’ll go down first."

How could she forget? Since they were dating, Evan vowed to not let her open the car door, and it seems he has not forgotten his promise. Instantly, she felt warm inside — her husband was such a gentleman.

Rose smiled as she held Evan’s hand getting off the car. A cold wind gently slapped her face, chilling her body slightly. Fortunately, Evan’s warm hands made her feel much more comfortable as they walked toward her parents.

"Mom, Dad... it’s so cold outside. Why are you guys waiting here!? Hurry, go inside." Rose walked faster towards them.

Winter in the capital city was much colder than in East City, her hometown. Because the capital city’s position was not far from the North City — the northernmost city of Astington country.

Rose likes winter and snow, but she likes summer more. Before marrying Evan, she would usually stay at home, spending time in her room or watching television every winter, every weekend, or holiday. She doesn’t like outdoor activities.

However, after she saw the scenery around her parent’s house, she couldn’t ignore it. She wanted to explore this place.

The expanse of trees covered in snow looked foreign to her eyes. She had never seen them in person. And besides, something caught her attention; when the wind blew, the tree branches made a beautiful rhythm that she had never heard before. Rose was mesmerized.

Rose had planned to take a walk to the hill behind the house the following day. However, she worried her plan would fail — her husband worried too much about her health. He was even stricter than her doctor.

"Rose, why are you wearing light and thin clothes!?" Molly ignored her daughter’s words, scolding her instead for wearing only a trench coat during the winter. She took Rose’s hand from Evan and pulled her into the house.

Molly also scolds Evan as they walk, "Son, don’t let your wife go out using this light coat, it’s quite cold in this area. She hasn’t recovered yet, so you should pay attention to her condition."

Rose was speechless hearing her mother scold Evan. She looked at Evan with regretful-looking eyes because earlier, she rejected him when he forced her to wear a winter coat.

"Yes, mother, I’ll make sure to remember that...." Evan replied as he followed them inside.

Arriving at the living room...

Rose was surprised that the large living room now looked cramped because almost everyone in her family was there.

She saw her uncle Jayson with aunt Emily talking to each other. And not far from where they were, she saw her grandfather and grandfather Collins playing chess by the fireplace.

In another corner nearby, Aunt Amanda is watching a movie with Keira and her mother-in-law, Doris. The only one not seen in the room was Sean — she felt sorry for Sean, who had to work on the holiday.

Rose felt a foreign feeling when she saw their warmth toward each other. She felt happy to see them, but at the same time, she felt sad — remembering her past with her mother.

In the past, when Rose and her mother lived in East City, they never felt a New Year family gathering like this. Usually, they just spent their holiday having a casual dinner and watching television, after which they would sleep without waiting for the new year to come.

In her past life, New Year’s Eve had always been like any other night. Nothing special, and nothing to celebrate about.

Now, watching the warmth of her family spending the holidays together, for some reason, made her heart feel warm. And without realizing it, her eyes started to fill with tears.

"Mom, I’m so happy that we finally met dad and got to spend our new year with all of them," Rose whispered to her mother. Molly was startled to hear her daughter’s trembling voice, and when she saw her teary eyes, she couldn’t help but feel the same way – feeling moved.

Molly hugged her daughter tightly. "I’m happy too. We are not alone anymore, dear... We have them around us to be with us and to protect us!"

Nicholas and Evan, who heard their words, were also moved. They could only wait silently for them and be lost in their thoughts.

Chapter 420: Married To Work

"Evan, Rose, you guys coming..." Doris was the first to notice them. She stood from her seat and approached them. She didn’t give her son a chance to take Rose upstairs to rest, but she immediately dragged Rose to join Amanda and the others in the seating area.

"Oh my, Sister Rose... I thought you would stay in the hospital until next year." Keira smiled when she saw Rose sitting with her aunt. Then she turned her gaze to Evan, who stood beside Rose. "Brother Evan, you can join grandpa over there. This is for women only..."

Keira’s words were met with laughter from Doris and the others.

Evan, "..."

"Evan, Kei is right. Can you give Rose some space!? She must be tired of you taking care of her like that...." Amanda was a little annoyed at Evan for forbidding her from visiting her niece during her stay in the hospital. Gosh!

Evan was speechless. Why did all of them attack him!?

Just as Evan wanted to say something, he saw Rose shake her head as if she was asking him to leave. Without saying a word, he went to join his grandfather.

"How’s your hand, sis?" Keira asked after she saw Evan leave.

"It doesn’t feel comfortable. I really want to take this cast off!" Rose’s face turns gloomy as she looks at her hand. This healing process was a little too much for her to bear.

"You have to endure it, my dear. You will be using the arm cast in the next few months." Doris rubbed Rose’s back and asked her to sit beside her.

"I know. I hope this can heal quickly." Rose smiled.

"You must eat more healthy food if you want to heal faster," said Molly. She was checking the situation in the dining room. She sat down right beside her daughter and joined their conversation.

"Mom, that’s why I come here. I want you to cook for me. I miss your cooking...."

"Not today, my dear. Your father invited the chef to cook for us. He doesn’t allow me to enter the kitchen. Gosh! Looks like I have to part with my hobby of cooking..." Molly slowly chuckled, remembering when Nicholas had told her not to enter the kitchen.

Just like today, for lunch and dinner, Nicholas was kind enough to assign a chef from one of the Spencer family hotels to cook for them.

"Mom, you are fortunate. Ever since you guys met, Father has spoiled you so much...."

Her mother used to suffer a lot raising her. In the past, when she was little, her mother didn’t have much time to take care of her. Her mother also didn’t have anyone to rely on. Now, her mother can enjoy her life more comfortably with her father. She feels blessed and happy for her.

"Sister Molly, I never thought my brother Nick would have that sweet side too..." Amanda laughed at the thought of her aloof and firm second brother having such a sweet and gentle demeanor.

Amanda suddenly felt envy. She wants a boyfriend like her brother, who is caring and sweet. For some reason, at this moment, Jamie Stone came to mind.

Instantly, Amanda felt like someone was squeezing her heart. She felt pain. Over the past few days, the man has not replied to the text messages she has sent. The man did not pick up her phone call either. He seems to disappear. Or avoid her?

It looks like her plans to have a boyfriend aren’t going to happen any time soon. There was no hope between them — it seemed like Jamie Stone wasn’t interested in her.

"Your brother is so kind and sweet. Amanda, I hope, one day, you will find a man like that, someone who will care and love you unconditionally." Molly smiled as she looked at Amanda. "When will you introduce my future brother-in-law?" asked Molly curiously.

Since joining the Spencer family, she had never seen Amanda bring her boyfriend. Impossible for a woman as beautiful and successful as Amanda doesn’t have a lover, right!?

"Yes, Amanda, all your brothers are married. Even your niece is also married. So when are you going to follow them?" Emily joined in.

"Amanda will never marry. She is too workaholic!" said Doris. Amanda is similar to her fool ex-husband, Anthony.

Amanda was utterly speechless.

Why do they suddenly talk about her love life? Gosh!

She felt like she wanted to disappear from the room. "Sister... Please stop teasing me." her face flushed with embarrassment. She has no problem with marriage. She really wants to get married. But, married to whom?

If only work could be said to be a partner. She’d be married to her work then!

Amanda avoided their curious stares and tried to make eye contact with her niece to ask for help getting out of this awkward conversation.

Rose bit her lip, trying to hold back her laughter — looking at how pitifully her aunt was pleading with her through her eyes.

OK, Auntie! I will help you.

"Mom, do we have any other guests? Why haven’t we had lunch yet?" Rose suddenly distracts her mother and the others.

"Huh! Are you hungry already? Wait a little bit... Your brother Sean is on his way." Molly said.

Rose was surprised to hear that. She thought Sean couldn’t celebrate the holiday with them.

"Brother Sean is so lucky. The first year Aunt Molly and Rose joined us, he got a holiday. As far as I can remember, ever since he entered the military, he has never come home on vacation like this. He is always in the middle of the forest, in an unknown place." Keira said.

"Hmm, I often feel sorry for your brother. Several times I wanted to ask him to quit as a special forces officer. But..." Emily suddenly stopped when she saw Amanda begging her to stop.

"Sister-in-law, you better stop talking about that, or someone might scold you...." Amanda chuckled.

Amanda felt sorry for her sister-in-law because every time she said those words, her father would scold her. Sean was her father’s hope. All his sons had no interest in pursuing their careers in the military, his target turned to his grandson, Sean. Luckily Sean liked the military lifestyle and was talented, so his career skyrocketed quickly.

Emily suddenly froze. She covered her mouth instantly while looking at her father-in-law. She was relieved to see the old man still playing chess seriously — not hearing their conversation. Or at least that is what she hopes for.
