Ch. 1991..2000
The Ex-Hcusband’s Revenge chapter 1991
"I understand. I will try my best..." Leon said.
He thought that Alfred wanted his help to defeat Poisonwielder and that he would only be in the way due to his lack of power.
After Leon was told that Poisonwielder was a skilled poison maker and that the Dragon Corps needed Leon's help to produce an antidote against the poison, he agreed to it without hesitation, as it was his duty as a member of the Dragon Corps.
"Mister Glasbey, there's a wide variety of Reaper's Breath. Do you have any information about it that you can send to me? I'll try and see if I can produce an antidote for it!’ Leon said.
Reaper's Breath was produced with a combination of five poisonous plants. Since there was no fixed combination to it, there was no fixed antidote for the poison either.
There were hundreds of types of poisonous plants in the world, and Leon needed to know which five plants Poisonwielder used to produce the Reaper's Breath in order to produce its antidote.
It would be much easier to capture Poisonwielder with the antidote in hand.
"I don't have it... Poisonwielder's name was added to the criminal list merely half a year ago, so the Dragon Corps has yet to obtain much information on him... All I know is that he has the Reaper's Breath. We have no clue as to what the components of the poison were..." Alfred said while shaking his head.
"Oh..." Leon's heart sank.
Without detailed information on the Reaper's Breath, it would be impossible for him to produce a specific antidote for the poison.
"What's wrong, Leon?" Alfred felt overwhelmed by an ominous feeling when Leon fell silent.
"Mister Glasbey, truth be told, the Reaper's Breath is a unique poison. If I don't know what plants were used in it, it will be difficult for me to produce an antidote," Leon said truthfully.
"I see... Is there any other way?" Alfred scowled.
"There's a way! Ganoderma has the property of dissolving poison, and it works on most poisonous plants! I can produce a type of Essential Detox Pill with Ganoderma, but I can't guarantee if it could fully counter the effects of the Reaper's Breath. Regardless, I will try my best," Leon replied hesitantly.
The Essential Detox Pill was a type of pill used as an antidote to numerous poisons, but since the Reaper's Breath was a unique poison, Leon did not know if the Essential Detox Pill would work.
Ganoderma could dissolve poison and suppress the effect caused by most poisons. Hence, even if the Essential Detox Pill failed to counter the Reaper's Breath completely, it should help to suppress the effect for a time.
"Good! I will leave it to you, then!" Alfred sighed a breath of relief.
"Sure! I'm not in the best shape right now and won't recover completely until tomorrow afternoon! I need some time to produce the Essential Detox Pills as well, so I won't be able to travel to the western region right away..." Leon said thoughtfully.
"It's fine! I'll talk to the western region Dragon Corps branch and get them to track Poisonwielder down to buy us some time! You can head toward the western region in the morning after tomorrow!" Alfred said.
"Okay! I'll head toward the western region in the morning the day after tomorrow, then!" Leon agreed.
With that, the two ended the call.
The Ex-Husband’s Revenge chapter 1992
"Mister Wolf, I'll take my leave if there aren't any further instructions.’ Seeing how Leon had ended the call, Oliver bid his farewell and left by car with Abraham and Joel to report back to Alfred.
Once they had left, Angus, Alan, Iris, and the others gathered around.
"Mister Wolf, I'm so sorry for falsely accusing you of trying to kill Darius. We've wronged you. Please accept my sincerest apology,' Alan said apologetically and bowed toward Leon earnestly before turning to glare at Dawn. "Dawn, you've allowed yourself to jump to conclusions thoughtlessly and almost got both Mister Wolf and your brother killed! Come over here to apologize to Mister Wolf and beg for his forgiveness."
"I..." Tears welled in Dawn's eyes as she was too embarrassed to face Leon.
Leon tried to tell them that Gordon was the one who poisoned Darius repeatedly, but since Gordon was her husband, she almost got Leon and Darius killed by listening to Gordon.
She was shaken to the core, and her heart was racked with guilt after learning the truth.
After a moment of hesitation, she walked toward Leon and apologized sincerely, "I'm sorry, Mister Wolf. This is all my fault. I've wrongfully accused you... Please find it in your heart to forgive me."
"Elder Hughes, Miss Hughes, you are both too kind. The Hughes were fooled by a vicious man, and I believe that none of you meant for any of this to happen. Since Mister Hughes is fine now and the misunderstanding has been resolved, let's just let bygones be bygones," Leon said with a smile.
He was indeed frustrated that he and Snow were blamed for assassinating Darius out of the blue. However, the Hughes did support him when he was being oppressed by the Hiltons. That was enough to make up for this.
Since both Alan and Dawn have apologized, he saw no need to dwell on the matter.
"Thank you for your forgiveness, Mister Wolf. You've even helped to save Darius' life. I don't know how we can ever repay you for this! We'll forever be in your debt, and we'll never forget what you've done for us! If there's anything you need in the future, just say the word, and the Hughes will do anything to assist you!" Alan said thankfully.
"You are too kind, Elder Hughes. The Hughes Group is Elegante Group's business partner, and Mister Hughes here is my friend. I won't even call this a favor," Leon said with a smile.
After a brief exchange, Alan signaled for both of the Hughes to bring Gordon over.
"Mister Wolf, Gordon almost got both you and Darius killed! I'll leave him in your hands as compensation," Alan said sincerely.
The Ex-Husband’s Revenge chapter 1993
"It's fine. He’s a member of your family, after all. You should decide what to do with him," Leon said thoughtfully.
Not only had Gordon kidnapped Snow, but he also plotted to frame Leon and Snow for the murder of Darius. Leon resented him for it.
Nevertheless, Gordon was still a member of the Hughes, and it would be inappropriate for Leon to punish Gordon in front of them, so he decided to hand Gordon over to the Hughes instead.
Since Gordon came close to killing Darius, there was no doubt in Leon's mind that the Hughes would not spare Gordon.
"Well... Alright, then. Mister Wolf, if that's everything, we'll be taking our leave now.’ Alan did not reject Leon's offer and left with the Hughes, along with Gordon in their custody.
With that, the chaos came to an end.
Leon did not know what the Hughes did to Gordon, but he did not see Gordon again in the southern region after that. One could only imagine the horrible fate Gordon must have suffered.
After Alan and the Hughes had left, Angus and Yuri bid their farewell to Leon as well, while Leon thanked them for coming to his aid.
After that, Angus led the Thompsons back to the Thompsons Mansion.
With that, Leon, Iris, and the Scammells were the only ones left in the spacious yard.
"Uncle, I recall that you mentioned a three-hundred-year-old Ganoderma being stored in the Scammells' warehouse, right?" Leon asked when he recalled the mission he received from Alfred.
He needed a 500-year-old Ganoderma to save Darius earlier, but the Scammells only had a 300-year-old one in stock. In the end, it was Angus who delivered an 800-year-old Ganoderma to save Darius from the poison. Hence, the 300-year-old Ganoderma in the Scammells' warehouse remained untouched.
"Yeah. Why do you ask? Do you still need it?" Damian asked in confusion.
He knew that Leon was searching for a Ganoderma to save Darius. Since Darius has recovered, Damian could not understand why Leon would need another Ganoderma.
"Yes! I need a three-hundred-year-old Ganoderma to produce the Essential Detox Pills! I'll need a few other ingredients as well, so please help to prepare them too! I'll need them by tomorrow afternoon," Leon explained before listing out the ingredients he needed for Damian.
The Ganoderma was the main ingredient for the Essential Detox Pills. The older it was, the better the pill would be in dissolving poison.
In order to defeat Poisonwielder, Leon needed to produce the Essential Detox Pills as soon as possible. That was where the 300-year-old Ganoderma in the Scammells' warehouse would be used.
"Sure. I'll get the ingredients ready as soon as possible!" Damian nodded and noted down all the ingredients Loen needed.
"Leon, it's getting late, and you're in a weakened state right now. Let's head home to rest," Iris said after all the important matters had been discussed.
With that, Iris and Snow helped send Leon home.
The Ex-Husband’s Revenge chapter 1994
In the following days, Leon recovered and produced 40 Essential Detox Pills using a 300-year-old Ganoderma along with a number of other valuable ingredients as preparation for his trip to the western region to assist with ambushing Poisonwielder.
Meanwhile, Devon had gone to the Dragon Corps after Joel was captured, and Alfred simply brushed him off by saying that Joel was captured to assist with investigations.
Devon was frustrated but helpless as the Dragon Corps was backed by the government and had powers beyond any family’s reach.
Since the Dragon Corps only needed Joel for investigation purposes, they would only keep him in custody for a few days at most. The Hiltons could not possibly challenge the Dragon Corps over such a trivial matter.
In the end, Devon could only swallow his pride and leave.
Two days later, Leon drove to the southern region branch of the Dragon Corps to meet with Alfred, as promised.
There were five other men waiting inside apart from Alfred.
Leon's subordinates, Oliver and Abraham, were both present. Among the group was one other old man in his sixties, along with two middle-aged men.
"Great timing, Leon! Allow me to introduce you to a fifth-level Platinum Dragon Guard here in the southern region, Scott Thear. Next to him are Chad bridge and Jerry Hapgood. They are first-level Gold Dragon Guards," Alfred proceeded to introduce Leon to the three with a smile.
"Hello, everyone," Leon greeted them kindly.
Scott nodded in response.
Chad and Jerry did not respond enthusiastically either, and the three seemed to ignore Leon after that.
As a fifth-level Platinum Dragon Guard, Scott was a martial artist in the Initial Almighty State, while Chad and Jerry were in the Semi-Almighty State.
Jerry was slightly stronger than Chad and closer to reaching the Almighty State.
Leon was only a young man in his twenties, so they naturally assumed that he was weak and was likely a low-level Gold Dragon Guard. That would make him far lower in status compared to the three of them. It was only normal for them to show Leon no respect at all.
"Scott, this is Leon Wolf. He's a fifth-level Platinum Dragon Guard, just like you!" Alfred could tell that the three were looking down on Leon and decided to introduce Leon properly.
"What?!"
"He's a Platinum Dragon Guard?!"
The three were stunned and gaped in disbelief.
None of them had expected a man Leon's age to be a Platinum Dragon Guard.
All Platinum Dragon Guards were required to have reached the Almighty State and accumulate sufficient contribution points before their promotion. It was hard to believe that Leon managed to reach the Almighty State at such a young age.
The Ex-Husband’s Revenge chapter 1995
"Mister Glasbey, could you have made a mistake?' Scott snapped out of it and asked.
Both Chad and Jerry found it difficult to believe that Leon was a Platinum Dragon Guard.
"It's not a mistake! Leon might not be in the Almighty State just yet, but he was able to kill one of the eight criminals, Asmodeus, all by himself! I assume he isn't far from reaching the Almighty State!" Alfred deadpanned.
"So he was the one who killed Asmodeus!’
Scott and the other two were absolutely flabbergasted.
Though Asmodeus was only a martial artist in the Semi-Almighty State, he was a sly man who possessed an Almighty Weapon, the Cuff of Doom.
Even martial artists in the Initial Almighty State might struggle to defeat Asmodeus alone.
If Leon managed to kill Asmodeus, it would mean that Leon was just as formidable.
However, they soon realized that it did not seem possible for Leon to defeat Asmodeus on his own if he was not in the Almighty State unless he had the help of someone far more powerful.
"Could it be that this kid came in through connections?"
Realization dawned on the trio.
According to the promotion system in the Dragon Corps, Platinum Dragon Guards were selected from martial artists who reached the Almighty State. If Leon was given the title without having reached the Almighty State, it would mean that he was promoted to the position due to his connection with someone important in the Dragon Corps.
They then concluded that the person backing Leon might have killed Asmodeus and gifted Leon with his contribution points so that Leon could be promoted to a fifth-level Platinum Dragon Guard.
"I see!"
They all assumed that Leon did not win his title by true strength and instantly began to look down at Leon.
Still, how Leon managed to rise to his rank did not matter to them, so they did not think much of it.
"Alright, I'll be assigning you all to your respective tasks! Two days ago, the Dragon Corps in the western region had sought our help to plan an attack on Poisonwielder. I'm sending in the six of you guys." Alfred cut to the chase and started briefing them on the plan.
"That's good!’ Scott, Chad, and Jerry felt motivated.
They had all heard that the Dragon Corps in the western region needed help with their attack on Poisonwielder, but none of them expected themselves to be included in the mission.
Although Poisonwielder was powerful and the mission had its risks, they would obtain a large number of contribution points and also eliminate a threat to the public if they succeeded.
It was the perfect chance for them to showcase their value, and everyone was excited to be entrusted with the mission.
The Ex-Husband’s Revenge chapter 1996
"Since all six of you are going to assist the Dragon Corps in the western region, you will need a leader! I hereby appoint Leon to be the leader, and all of you will have to heed his command!" Alfred said.
"What?"
"You are naming him the leader?"
"It... It can't be!"
Scott and the other two were stunned and disappointed. They assumed that Leon was a powerless man who rose to his current rank through his connection to someone important.
Out of their respect for Alfred, the three of them would be fine to let Leon join them and obtain some contribution points from the mission. However, Alfred caught them by surprise by appointing Leon as the leader. It meant that Leon would obtain the most contribution points once the mission was accomplished.
None of them could accept it, knowing that their hard work in risking their lives to kill Poisonwielder would end up being credited to Leon.
"Mister Glasbey, I think you are being reckless to name Mister Wolf the leader! In terms of experience, Scott has been in the Dragon Corps for years, and he's also a martial artist in the Almighty State, which makes him far more powerful than Mister Wolf!"
"I think that Scott is better suited as the leader!"
Chad and Jerry blurted out as they tried to nominate Scott to be the leader instead.
They both knew that Scott was an experienced Dragon Guard who was loved by many. With Scott as the leader, he would be dividing the contribution points equally among the team, so it was far more ideal compared to having most of the points credited to Leon.
"Mister Glasbey, what Chad and Jerry said makes sense! As one of the people on the criminal list, Poisonwielder is a formidable opponent. Mister Wolf is far too young, so it's easy for him to act impulsively. It might not be appropriate for you to appoint him as the leader! I beg that you reconsider!" Scott said.
As a Platinum Dragon Guard, Scott did not care much about credit and contribution points.
However, Poisonwielder was a formidable martial artist and a poison specialist. If they wished to defeat him, they would have to do their best and could not afford any mistakes.
Alfred might be placing their lives at risk by appointing a young man as their leader.
If Leon acted recklessly, not only would they fail to accomplish the mission, but they might all end up dying at the hands of Poisonwielder. That was the last thing any of them wanted.
"That's enough! I've thought this through! Leon is the most suitable candidate for this position!" Alfred said firmly.
"But..." Scott, Chad, and Jerry were reluctant to give up and wanted to argue but were cut off by Alfred before they could do so.
The Ex-Husband’s Revenge chapter 1997
"My decision is final! Scott, Leon might be young, but he's incredibly gifted, especially in medicine! He has already found a way to counter the Reaper's Breath. I'm certain that appointing him as the leader will help with the mission!" Alfred deadpanned.
"What?!"
"Mister Glasbey, did you just say that he found a way to counter the Reaper's Breath?”
"Seriously?!"
The three were stunned.
Given the Dragon Corps' power, it would never have considered Poisonwielder as a threat if he was only a formidable martial artist in the Almighty State. The Dragon Corps in the western region had sought the southern region's help mainly because of Poisonwielder's unparalleled skills in poison-making.
Among all poisons he had, his Reaper's Breath was colorless and odorless, so one would easily fall victim to it.
On top of that, Poisonwielder was sly and experienced in hiding his tracks, so the Dragon Corps would still find it difficult even if they sent a few Platinum Dragon Guards after Poisonwielder.
On the contrary, if Leon truly had the means to counter the effect of the Reaper's Breath, Poisonwielder would be like a maimed predator and could be defeated with ease.
"Leon, you've produced the Essential Detox Pills that you told me about, right? Why don't you show them to the team?" Alfred said to Leon.
"Yeah. I've produced them!’ Leon nodded and took out a jade flask before shaking a few pills out of it to show the others.
"Mister Wolf, are you claiming that these white pills can counter the Reaper's Breath?"
Scott and the other two studied the pills skeptically.
"I suppose so! I don't know which plants Poisonwielder used to produce his Reaper's Breath, so there's no guarantee that the Essential Detox Pills can counter the poison. However, even if the Essential Detox Pills fail to nullify the poison completely, it can, at the very least, suppress the poison's effects for some time," Leon said.
"You suppose?’
The excitement and anticipation in their hearts were instantly replaced by disappointment.
They had thought that Leon had truly come up with a solution to counter the Reaper's Breath but soon realized that they got excited for no reason.
The Reaper's Breath was a strong poison. Even Leon could not guarantee that the Essential Detox Pills would work, so the three were hardly convinced.
Since there was no proof as to whether Leon was telling the truth, they suspected that he was only bragging.
"Leon, distribute the Essential Detox Pills to the others, just in case!” Alfred said.
"Oh, sure," Leon said before handing the other five members of the team two pills each.
The team was speechless.
Oliver and Abraham worked under Leon and had always trusted him fully. However, Scott, Chad, and Jerry felt differently.
They were certain that Leon did not earn his status, and none of them could place their trust in him nor believe that the Essential Detox Pills could counter the effect of the Reaper's Breath.
However, since Alfred and Leon only meant well, they hesitated before accepting the pills despite their skepticism over the pills' efficacy.
The Ex-Husband’s Revenge chapter 1998
"Alright! It's settled! If none of you have anything else to say, you can all head toward the western region now!" Alfred said.
"But we..." Scott, Chad, and Jerry voiced out hesitantly.
Since they concluded that Leon obtained his status through connection and was too young to lead, none of them could accept that Leon had the capability to be their leader.
However, Alfred was the person in charge of the southern region branch. Since he was determined to appoint Leon as the leader, the trio knew better than to argue, as they did not wish to cross Alfred.
They all sighed inwardly in resignation before reluctantly accepting the arrangement.
"Leon, take this mask! You are considered non-staff personnel, and it's best that you keep your identity hidden. Remember to cover your face with this mask once you arrive in the western region. If possible, create a pseudonym for yourself and be careful not to let anyone know your real identity!" Alfred said before handing Leon a golden mask.
Alfred knew that the western region was packed with people, and Leon might give his identity away if he showed his true face.
On top of that, Poisonwielder was a sly man, and Leon's Essential Detox Pills might not work, so there was no guarantee that Leon and the others would succeed in eliminating Poisonwielder.
If Poisonwielder managed to escape and Leon's identity was exposed, Leon might face retaliation from Poisonwielder in the future whenever he is alone.
For safety's sake, it would be best for Leon to hide his face.
"Alright. I'll be careful.’ Leon accepted the golden mask.
"Leon, I'll leave this to you and wait for your good news! All the best to you and the Dragon Corps in the western region. Don't let me down!" Alfred tapped Leon on the shoulder.
"Alright. I'll do my best!" Leon nodded before bidding farewell to Alfred and leaving with the others.
Meanwhile, in the western region.
The Tiddertons resided in the outskirts of the western region, which was within two hours of drive from the southern region. They were one of the most ancient lineages of martial artists in the western region and had kept a low profile over the centuries.
However, they had recently obtained a motherwort, an extremely rare spiritual herb that possessed a dark property.
When used for medicine, it could be a herb that saves lives, but when in the hands of evildoers, it was a herb that would enhance the effects of any poison.
The Deadly Veratrum poison that Leon obtained from the Libertons used the exact same herb, which gave it the lethal effect of killing someone within a matter of minutes.
Poisonwielder, who was a specialist in poisons, knew just how valuable the motherwort was. Due to his studies of the art of darkness, the herb's property matched the nature of his power.
Hence, when he learned that the Tiddertons had procured a motherwort, he came out of hiding and lurked around the Tiddertons Mansion in hopes of stealing the motherwort despite the risk of being discovered by the Dragon Corps.
The Ex-Husband’s Revenge chapter 1999
Poisonwielder's movement did not escape the Dragon Corps' attention, and they had come to conclude that he was targeting the motherwort to increase his power or strengthen his poison.
The Dragon Corps instantly dispatched a group of martial artists over to the Tiddertons Mansion to protect the Tiddertons from Poisonwielder and also search for him.
Since Poisonwielder was extremely skilled in hiding himself, none of the martial artists sent by the Dragon Corps had managed to find him in the past two days. On the other hand, Poisonwielder dared not attack the Tiddertons due to the Dragon Corps' interference.
Leon had arrived at the Tiddertons Mansion along with the others based on the information he received from Alfred.
They went into the living room and spotted dozens of martial artists from the western region Dragon Corps, along with the elders of the Tiddertons, who were gathering to discuss strategies to be used against Poisonwielder.
When Leon, Scott, and the others arrived, the members of the western region Dragon Corps were overjoyed and hurried over to meet them.
The leader, an intimidating old man, greeted Scott warmly.
"Scott, it's been a while! We've been waiting for two whole days for the backup from the southern region to come!" The old man pouted.
He was Fletcher Caldicot, a Fifth-level Platinum Dragon Guard, and also the leader of the martial artists in the western region gathered to eliminate Poisonwielder.
Scott had worked for the southern region Dragon Corps for over 20 years and had run into Fletcher a few times in the past.
The western region had sought the southern region's help two days ago. However, since Leon had not fully recovered, the southern region Dragon Corps did not dispatch their backup team immediately.
The members of the western region Dragon Corps were all relieved that reinforcement had arrived.
"Fletcher, I'm sorry to keep you waiting..." Scott smiled apologetically.
Scott and Fletcher exchanged a few words of pleasantries since they knew each other personally.
"Scott, I didn't expect the southern region to send you to lead the backup team! Considering your strength, we will eliminate Poisonwielder with ease together!" Fletcher laughed.
He knew that Scott had reached the Initial Almighty State and was one of the top martial artists at that level because he was not far from reaching the Intermediate Almighty State. On top of that, Scott was experienced and knowledgeable after all the years he had worked for the Dragon Corps, so that made it more likely for them to succeed in eliminating Poisonwielder with Scott's support.
"Um... Fletcher, that's not the case! I'm not leading the team from the southern region. Mister Wolf is our leader." Scott smiled sheepishly.
"Mister Wolf? Who's that? I've never heard of such a person," Fletcher asked in a surprised tone.
He had worked with the southern region Dragon Corps a few times in the past and knew quite a few of the Platinum Dragon Guards but had never heard of anyone with the last name Wolf.
The Ex-Husband’s Revenge chapter 2000
"Fletcher, allow me to introduce you to Mister Wolf..." Scott pointed at Leon and made a brief introduction.
"What?"
"That's... Mister Wolf?"
Fletcher and the other members of the western region Dragon Corps turned to look at Leon, and their jaws dropped instantly.
Leon had put on the golden mask to cover his face, so none of them could see what Leon looked like. However, based on Leon's figure, it was not hard to tell that he was a young man in his twenties.
The mission to eliminate Poisonwielder was extremely dangerous. Since there was no room for mistakes, it would make more sense for the southern region Dragon Corps to assign Scott as the leader.
To their bewilderment, they had assigned a young man as the leader. The arrangement caught all of them off guard.
"What's the meaning of this, Scott? Are you mocking the western region Dragon Corps?" asked a middle-aged man beside Fletcher in a sharp tone.
"That's right!"
"This brat's even wearing a mask to hide his face!"
"You've no respect for the western region branch!"
The others agreed and voiced their frustrations.
It was bad enough that their reinforcements arrived two days late, but an unknown masked man had also been arranged to lead the backup team. It was only normal for the western region Dragon Corps to be upset with that arrangement.
"Well..." Scott was rendered speechless as the others were only telling the truth. Even Scott himself agreed that Alfred had been too reckless to appoint Leon as the leader. Hence, he did not know how to respond to the others' doubts.
"Please calm down, everyone! Mister Wolf here is a Platinum Dragon Guard as well. He might be young, but he's extremely powerful..." Oliver and Abraham attempted to defend Leon.
"He is a Platinum Dragon Guard?"
"What a joke!"
"Is the southern region Dragon Corps running out of talents? How could you promote such a young man to the rank of Platinum Dragon Guards?"
"The southern region is losing its touch!"
The martial artists from the western region snorted and leered at Leon in contempt. They all knew that only martial artists in the Almighty State could be given the title of Platinum Dragon Guard.
None of them had ever heard about someone in the younger generation in Sky County having reached the Almighty State, so they did not believe that Leon had what it takes to be promoted to Platinum Dragon Guard unless he was promoted through his connection to someone important.
However, if that were true, it would only confirm the Southern Dragon Corps ' incompetence in assigning a powerless man as a leader.
"But..." Oliver and Abraham were rendered speechless.
They both knew that Leon was not in the Almighty State and was also aware that there was a possibility that Leon only managed to reach his current status through his connection with someone higher up the chain of command. Given that, they could not refute the others' claims.
