Lycannar

Footsteps sounded down the hall. I heard the living–room door appear in the threshold of my bedchamber, looking at me.

open and my sister Serena

“Uhm… baby brother, dinner is ready,” she said, but I didn’t answer. My eyes lingered on her for what felt like an eternity. I had gone mute after leaving the throne chamber earlier today; my people had gone quiet around me.

The night traders closed early. The maids went to bed almost at once and the night guards were less active than usual.

I wondered why. Are they also sad because the king is? I couldn’t be sure. The one thing I was certain of is that my uncle Dareth would never doubt my words again while he lived. Nor would Baron ever ask for my crown or the royal seal.

“I will… I am not hungry, Serena,” I finally replied when I saw her waiting. Concern flickered across her face and then hardened into anger, as usual.

“Mearez?!” she called, summoning our eldest. It didn’t take long before Mearez appeared at Serena’s side in the doorway.

“What’s wrong? Will you calm down?” she asked.

“Please,” Serena fretted. “Why is he not eating? He hasn’t taken a meal since morning, and I doubt he ate back at Ash Pack.”

Mearez looked at me gently. She knew I was still reeling from the argument with Uncle Dareth.

“Lycannar, why don’t you come to the small dining room to eat? Please?” she urged.

Before I could answer, Serena grunted impatiently. The rightful source is Find✶Novel.net

“I’ll tell my brother Hades. He’ll know what to do and I know he’s like this because he’s the youngest. That’s why he’s sulking.”

“Will you calm down, Serena?” Mearez coaxed, helping her steady her breath. Then Mearez turned to me and sighed. “I’ll bring your meal. You must eat, Lycannar. Do you understand?”

I nodded and looked away. She left and returned with plates I get up to accept, setting them on the table but leaving them covered for now.

“Thank you,” I murmured. Mearez smiled warmly and walked away, but Serena lingered a moment longer, muttering under her breath in regret.

“I should have gouged out that evil uncle Dareth’s eyes for making my baby brother sad like this,” she hissed.

I couldn’t help the small, weak smile that tugged at me. She looked at me once, satisfied I’d softened, then left, taking their warmth with her.

After they departed I sat in silence, staring into space, lonely again. Alone and sad. A man who belonged nowhere. That was me.

I was lost in the thought when the gate to the kingdom sounded open. Curious, I walked to the corridor and peered down. and there she was. Zephyrine. She alighted from her carriage, dressed beautifully, and I lowered my gaze, swallowing hard.

An illusion, I told myself. She would never come here. She might never come again; I had pushed my luck by asking for her hand. Who in their right mind would accept a cursed man, the prisoner of this Black tower as a husband?

A chill settled over me until soft hands wrapped my shoulders from behind. I froze. Chantel could enter the chamber, but he’d never held me like this. Only she could.

I turned slowly. It wasn’t an illusion.

She was here real, warm. I reached up and touched her cheek; it was alive beneath my hand. Her eyes lifted to mine like she was the only source of light.

“Zephyrine?” I whispered, praying this moment was not a dream.

She smiled.

“Lycannar,” she breathed, leaning into my arms, her head settling on my chest. Instantly the doubts, the sorrow, the loneliness… all of it eased. She completed something in me.

“Zephyrine…” I pulled her back a little to look into her eyes. “You are here? I thought it wasn’t

real.”

She nodded, calm and sure.

“I came to tell you something,” she said, and I went still. What could she possibly say? Had her brother recovered enough to reveal some bitter truth? “It’s about your proposal, Lycannar.”

My palms sweated though the air was cool. I took a step back, breath catching.

“I want to marry you too, Lycannar. I want you to be my husband. I want to live with you in this Black tower.”

I stood frozen. I must not be hearing correctly. Did she just..

“I became an Alpha to find my brother. Now he is here. He will recover and take the Alpha seat that was meant for him alone. Retiring from everything… I would like to relocate here to give you what you asked for, Lycannar. The rest of my life… I also wish to live it as your lawfully wedded wife.” She search my eyes to drop it. “But I can’t because… I can’t give you heir or heiress.”

Back Where 222

He is… shattered. I can feel it. I can see it. But deep down I know I did the right thing. After everything he has done for me, the help I can never repay, the love, the devotion, I cannot repay him with an empty body. I will not make him fatherless.

The Moon Goddess herself decreed I would never bring forth pups except for my second mate, and Lycannar is not the one.

He deserves heirs. He deserves a legacy. I cannot take that away from him. I will repay him endlessly in other ways, but not in the one he desires most.

When I lift my eyes to his, what I see is not anger. It is deeper than pain, deeper than agony. It is awe. Like he had seen this moment coming all along, and now that it’s here, he cannot believe he was right.

“You won’t… be my wife because you don’t want to carry my pups?” he asks, and I pause. Wait. He has misunderstood. “Why? Because… because of the curse?”

Hearing that shatters me. Why would he think such a thing?

“No,” I whisper. “Your curse has nothing to do with this, Lycannar. I cannot give birth. I am… barren.” Original content can be found at find·novel·net

His brow furrows, confusion shadowing his face. The same crease I’ve seen before when something unsettles him.

“Don’t make horrible things up, Zephyrine, just because you want to say no.”

His words stun me. Now it is my turn to stare at him in awe.

A sigh escapes my lips. I turn away, my eyes tracing his vast kingdom spread endlessly before me. My words cut through the silence, pointing out what I cannot change.

“When I stepped into my role as Alpha, I met the Moon Goddess. She laid down laws, clauses I could never undo. Nyroth, as my first mate, was the only one who could impregnate me without hindrance. But I rejected him. And so she gave me another decree. Only my second- chance mate would be able to plant life within me. No other man.”

My heart grows heavier as I slowly turn back to him. My throat tightens, and I swallow hard.

“You are a King, Lycannar. You own a vast kingdom. You bear the weight of your people and

the duty of a bloodline to continue. I cannot chain you with my brokenness. I would marry you without a moment’s hesitation if I could, but I am barren.” My lips tremble, biting back the ache. “I’m sorry.”

Silence falls. He just stares, no reaction. Not until his jaw hardens and he strides past me, entering the bedchamber.

A chill runs down my spine. His hurt is palpable. I can feel it through the amulet that binds us. His sorrow is raw, deep as a wound that may never heal.

I freeze. This wasn’t why I came. I didn’t come to make him bleed deeper.

For a heartbeat, I consider letting him go. But then I break, following him. I step into the bedchamber just as he pulls his shirt over his head, stripping for the night bath.

“Lycannar?” I call softly. No response. “Lycannar, this is for your own good. I’m doing you a favor. Don’t you understand? Don’t

you see it?”

“See what?” He stops, his shirt half off, and his eyes pierce into me. I swallow. “See what, Zephyrine? Did I ask you for this favor?”

My heart sinks. Not from the sharpness of his words but from the rawness of the pain in his

eyes.

“Lycannar, you must understand me.” My voice falters.

“Understand what? Then tell me.” His tone hardens. “Do you love me?”

The question tears me apart. He knows the truth.

“You know I do.”

“And yet you

would have me take another woman, lie with her, just to give me pups? Is that what you want?”

Hearing it aloud rips through me like a blade. The thought of him with another woman makes bile rise in my

throat.

My eyes sting, and I lower my gaze, biting my lip until it hurts.

“Let’s face reality, Lycannar. I can’t give you pups. And you need them.” My voice shakes. “Besides… that’s not why I came. Can we not speak of this now?”

Tension coils between us like a rope ready to snap. He pins me with his silent. Then he nods slowly.

He brushes past me without another word, slamming the living chamber door behind him.

The sound makes me shudder. It is the first time we’ve truly argued bitterly, painfully, with our future hanging between us.

I try to convince myself I did right. That I am protecting him. I gulp down the ache and follow him, pushing into the bath chamber.

He sits in the water, his hands braced on the stone edge, his head bowed as though the weight of his thoughts is crushing him.

My heart clenches. I begin to undress, stepping into the water, hoping maybe we can mend this here. But no. Lycannar swims past me, leaving without a word. He gathers his clothes and leaves the chamber, leaving me standing alone in the cold water.

That’s when I realize it. Maybe I’ve done something too cruel. Maybe the answer I gave was harsher than I ever intended.

My lips quiver as I try to hold myself together. First the battle that stole loved ones, and now, just when I’ve found the man I love, fate tears him away from me with another merciless obstacle.

We cannot live on fleeting moments of passion alone. And how can we marry when we know we will never bear children?

Lycannar has always wanted pups. He’s spoken of them in every breath that allowed it.

“As many as your body can give me,” he would say.

But I cannot give him that. I cannot give him anything. Not after everything he has done for

me.

I stare at the still water, attempting to finish my bath, but I cannot. The tears rise, burning, blurring, trailing hotly down my cheeks.

I bite my lip, trying to hold back the sobs, but they come anyway. My body shakes. My heart aches. Cursed fate that I am useful to everyone else, but never to him.

I am alone with my sorrow when I hear the footsteps. The door creaks open, and Lycannar stands there, dressed.

I hiccup, brushing my tears away quickly, but he crosses the room in silence. His hand finds my wrist. Gently, firmly, he pulls me out of the water.

Back Where 223

I watch her stare at her reflection one last time before lowering the thin curtain to cover the mirror. Gently, she walks up to the table and takes a seat on the chair across from me.

She looks… utterly lovely in her nightdress, and for a brief moment I can only stare at her bare shoulders and the curve of her neck. For some reason, I wish I were close enough to press a kiss against her tender, milky skin.

But just as the thought rises, it dies when my eyes meet hers. Our gazes lock briefly.

She had said no, and that has hurt me more than anything ever has. I try to understand, but I can’t. She said she loves me. Doesn’t that mean that whatever happens, we face it together? Or have I misunderstood what love means?

Is the love she feels for me different?

I lower my gaze, burying the questions, and reach for the dinner laid out before us. I open the gaze fixed dish, pick up a piece of cutlery, and hand her the other. She hesitates. I can feel her on me, but I keep my eyes on the plate.

“Thank you,” she mutters softly, finally accepting it.

We begin to eat in silence, but my appetite is gone. The beasts in me, who have always loved to consume their fill, are quiet tonight. After only three bites, I set the food aside and reach for the goblet of water, drinking slowly.

Then I rise from the chair and pour myself the nightly potion to calm the beasts. After swallowing it down, I walk to the bed, sit, and bury my face in the hollow of my palms, sighing heavily to stay composed.

Seconds pass, then minutes. At last, I climb fully into bed, lying back as my eyes lift to the beautiful sketch of Zephyrine’s face etched in memory.

I want her, just as always. I want her as I always do, but she… she does not seem to feel the same about me. And that breaks my heart.

I lower my gaze, pull the blanket over myself, and try to force sleep.

The sound of her clearing the table carries through the chamber. Dishes clinking. Water running faintly from the kitchen. Minutes later, she returns, her steps pausing in the middle of the room.

I hear nothing more from her, no movement, and curiosity prompts me to crack my eyes open. She is

staring at my ankles.

A small frown creases her brows as she walks closer and sits on the edge of the bed, her fingers reaching for me. Instinctively, I pull back at the last moment.

“Don’t touch it,” I say quietly. Her eyes lift from my legs to my

face.

“Why? Because I’m not your woman anymore?”

I raise an eyebrow. Is that anger in her voice? And why does she sound as though I said such a thing?

“You’re the one who declared yourself single, Zephyrine. Not me.” I turn slightly away, but her jaw hardens.

“Why can’t you understand simple words, Lycannar?” Newest update provided by fındnovel.net

“Because they weren’t simple,” I reply curtly. “You gave me hope and then crushed it. You said

love me, that you’d love to marry me, and then the next second you say no to my proposal because you’re barren, or because of something my foremother said to you…”

“Lycan…”

“Our relationship isn’t just about sex. It’s not about power, thrill, or good times. It’s about the bad times too. About comforting each other. Accepting each other’s flaws, all of them. It shouldn’t be your problem alone, Zephyrine. You should call it ours, so we can find the solution together.”

She falls silent, still. I know the weight of my words has struck her. For the first time, I’ve spoken in true frustration and misery, and she cannot brush it away.

I sigh shakily, lowering my gaze,

“But if truly this is the path you’ve chosen, then… maybe we should forget the matter. Let’s focus on something else. As you wish.”

Seconds pass. At last, she climbs into bed as well, lying beside me. Our first night filled with tension.

Our first night touched by real anger. Many couples would have turned away, slept apart. But after minutes of silence, the distance becomes unbearable for both of us.

She turns toward me, finding me already waiting. Zephyrine leans in and kisses my lips, pulling back to swallow hard.

“I’m sorry I didn’t think that far, Lycan. I just… didn’t want to be selfish.” Her voice is soft. “I respect and love your sisters more than anything. No matter what the world says, they will always be considered Blood. But Lycannar… you are the only true Blood to the throne left, and you need a true heir. Your offspring who will succeed you.”

I sigh deeply.

“You know… my uncle Dareth said something today that weighs on me still. He said only the gods know how monstrous my offspring will be. Cursed, maybe. Worse than me. And thinking of it… maybe not bearing pups is a blessing in disguise.”

I swear I see her heart shatter as I try to console myself. Her teeth bite down on her lower lip until she trembles. Tears well in her eyes, spilling silently down her cheeks.

Without a word, she crawls into my arms, and I hold her close. We stay like that, wrapped in each other, until sleep finally takes us.

Back Where 224

I stirred in my sleep and gradually drifted awake when I couldn’t feel him beside me. Lycannar. My eyes fluttered open, and I paused there for a while.

It was like he hadn’t slept in the chamber at all. A wave of loneliness suddenly washed over me, and I sat up groggily, determined to look for him.

“Lycan?” I called, but no response came. Only the echo of my own voice greeted me. It almost felt like Chantel wasn’t even home.

Restless now, I walked out of the living room and wandered toward the bath chamber, but he wasn’t there. A shaky sigh escaped me.

Was he still mad at me for what happened last night?

“Lycan?” I called again, heading toward the end of the hall only for his voice to sound behind

me.

“I’m here.”

I stiffened at the sound of it. Slowly, I turned to see him standing at the entrance where the stairs led down to the dining hall.

He was fully dressed, as though he had just returned from somewhere, and judging by the darkest hour, I wondered where he had been. But that thought fled when his presence overwhelmed me with a warmth I hadn’t expected.

hair.

“I can’t sleep without you,” I murmured against his chest, and he pressed a kiss to my hair.

“Come on. Let’s get you back to bed.”

He carried me with ease and laid me down gently in the bedchamber. His thumb caressed my cheek before he stood to pull off his boots, cloak, and shirt. Then he slid beneath the blanket, gathering me into his arms.

I sighed, melting against his solid presence. His strength always made me feel safe, but my eyes drifted down to his ankles.

“Lycan?” I asked quietly, sitting up to study the new scars etched there. “What happened to you? Those weren’t there before. You had no scars at all… until now.”

He didn’t answer at first. Instead, he stared at me like I had just spoken in riddles. My fingers reached toward the mark, but at the last moment, he pulled his leg away.

“Don’t touch it,” he said softly.

I swallowed hard. To my ears, it sounded like rejection.

“I thought you said your problem is mine,” I whispered. “You don’t want to share this with

me?”

Silence stretched between us. Finally, he shook his head.

“I came late that night. Before I could return, the midnight bell had struck, meaning I have spent two nights outside.”

I froze.

“What happened when you broke the… warning?”

“I shifted,” he admitted quietly. “The anklets were forged to restrain me from losing control. When my beasts tried to come out, they glowed red–hot. They burned me.”

I went still again, stunned. Why did it always have to be this way?

“I should have let you go sooner that day,” I whispered, guilt choking me. “It’s my fault.”

His arm came around me, pulling me down into his embrace.

“It’s no one’s fault but mine. I should have heeded the warning more carefully.” He sighed, eyes drifting up toward the sketch of me on the ceiling. His hand brushed over me tenderly. “How is your brother?”

At the mention, I blinked. Varyn.

“I left him in good hands. I am his sister, but… I still believe Dessyn should look after him. She loves him too much. He’s recovering.”

Lycannar caressed me more gently, his voice low and steady.

“You don’t need to feel guilty for what happened to your brother, Zephyrine. I know You’re running from it because of that guilt.”

He pierced me with the truth, and I felt myself shrink in his arms. Lycannar knew me far too well now.

“I came here seeking peace, Lycan. My pack is nothing but torment for me. I didn’t know how to face Varyn’s condition. I was angry with myself, too, for wasting five years when I could have gone to Blackwater to save him.”

“You didn’t know he was in Blackwater,” he said, pulling back to meet my eyes. “And the moment you found out, you rode straight there. You saved him.”

“All because of you,” I whispered. “You make it all look so easy. The burden, the battle, the rescue. You stood behind me like a solid rock. You wiped my tears and never demanded that I be strong

all the time. You told me it was okay to cry before you. And Lycan… I don’t know how to repay you. I don’t know at all.”

He said nothing, just cupped my cheek and gave me a small, almost sad smile. It made my heart ache that I had nothing to give him in return.

“You know… I came here for more than one reason.” I lowered my gaze, my voice soft. “Aside from rejecting your proposal.”

He didn’t speak, only watched me with patient eyes.

“I came because I felt your sorrow through the amulet. I came because something in me felt uneasy and here in your arms alone will I find peace. I came because I love you. I came because… I love you again, and again, and again.”

He silenced me with a kiss, pulling back just enough to search my eyes.

“I argued with my uncle Dareth earlier today,” he confessed.

I arched a brow.

“You’re the easiest–going man I’ve ever known.”

“Well, he hates me enough to look past that,” Lycannar said, bitterness sharp in his voice. “Baron, my beta, wants the crown. They used to hide it, but now they’ve made it plain and I gave it to him.”

“What?” I gasped. “Lycan, he’s a Blood, and you gave him the crown, he’ll rule…‘

“No,” he cut in, shaking his head. His gaze was heavy with sorrow. “He can’t be king. No one can. Not in my reign.”

“Because it’s my curse,” he revealed. His throat worked as he swallowed. “The crown is my burden. The throne is my doom. The royal seal is my bitterness. My people are my responsibility. I must carry it all.”

My heart shattered at the weight of his words. The meaning in them was more than pain. It was destiny.

He gave me a small, broken smile.

“The coronation was the first and last time I ever wore the crown, Zephyrine.”

I nodded, remembering. He hadn’t touched it since.

“That’s because when I put it on, I hear voices of the dead. The past kings whisper in my head. It’s… terrifying.” He lowered his voice to a whisper, his eyes softening as they lingered on me. “Very terrifying, Zephyrine. I never want you to know how that feels. Because you are the woman I want to protect, provide for, support, and die for.”

Back Where 225

The morning sunlight felt different today. The breeze, too, carried something new, as though everything had shifted completely. I could sense a surge of power in the air.

I stirred, but he wasn’t there beside me. The emptiness of the bed urged my eyes open. I sighed.

It was a new day. A day when Luna Tahlia would reclaim her glory and set everything in the Blackbridge Pack right with nothing more than her presence.

A small smile tugged at my lips at the thought of how shocked everyone would be when she arrived. I turned to rise, but froze cold at the sight before me. I swear I shuddered.

On the table stood a glass case, glowing faintly, holding what I never expected to see. My heart dropped as I pulled back.

The ring.

But… how? I thought we had closed the chapter of marriage. I thought he had agreed I wasn’t fit for a woman since I could give him nothing.

Was he still going to propose despite everything?

I was caught between disbelief and dread when he entered from the corridor. His filled the room, heavy and commanding.

presence

My breath caught as he walked toward the chair across from me and sat, his eyes locking onto mine, not with anger, not with disdain, but with a seriousness laced with possession.

I gulped, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear, my gaze flicking from the ring back to him.

“It was made overnight,” his voice came gently, making my heart clench. “If you look closely, you’ll see it has two sides. One represents a kingdom, the other a realm. It was carved from the purest sacred gold… with a drop of my blood.”

I bit my lower lip, shaken by the weight of his words.

“I had accepted a fate long before you came into my life, Zephyrine,” he continued, his voice rough with honesty. “That this tower would be where I lived and died in loneliness and anguish. My father never failed to remind me that no one would ever love me. That

He paused, jaw tightening, fingers raking through his hair as if fighting for control.

Raw pain swam in his eyes.

“You are my anchor. The thought of you alone keeps me sane. If you don’t take this ring, if you don’t marry me and stay here with me…” His voice dropped, firm. “forgive me if this sounds like a threat, but I will come for you. I will drag you back here, bind you with the darkest spell, and marry you by fire and force if I must. Not even the moon goddess you worship will stop me. Hate me if you wish, but I will still cherish you, support you, and be obsessed with you.”

I froze at the last words. Goosebumps rippled over my skin, my heart thudding as though begging him to repeat it.

“I am obsessed with you, Zephyrine,” he breathed. “From the first moment I saw you. From the moment you stepped into my kingdom. From the sound of your voice, the moment you trusted me with your heart, the moment you never once questioned my curse the way everyone else does.”

He rose from his chair, came to the bed, and lowered himself beside me. Taking the ring from its case, he held it out.

“Please accept it. We’ll figure out pups later. Just be my wife. Let me be your husband. That’s all

I want.”

At the peak of emotion, even the strongest warriors shed tears. His confession, vow, and threat all collided before me, and I couldn’t fathom how I had ever thought myself undeserving of such devotion.

How foolish I had been to believe anything could stop Lycannar from reaching me.

How blind to think the moon goddess herself could prevent this love from blooming in our hearts.

I met his eyes, every last barrier in me shattering.

“Put it on me,” I whispered shakily, terrified he might change his mind if I hesitated. “Please, Lycannar. Put it on me.”

He took the ring, but paused, a faint smile ghosting his lips.

“Ah. Am I not supposed to kneel for this?”

Tears streamed down my face as laughter broke through my sob. I watched him kneel and slide the ring onto my finger, binding us from that moment as one.

And that was how it began.

Our fated love.
