Ch. 166..170: The Werewolf's Vampire Mate Chapter 166-170
Chapter 166: The Elis.
Beau.
"Are you worried?’’ I ask Lanis because I don’t know what he is thinking. He looks at me from the passenger seat in the car. It doesn’t seem like he is but in my mind, I am kind of freaking the fuck out. If my bite, did that to Cassius, could it hurt Lanis in some way?
’’No, this is not something to be worried about,’’ he tries to assure me.
I raise a brow, slowly glancing at him with my side-eye. We are on our way to the hotel. Once we meet up with the Elis, we can figure out what to do with Cassius. He doesn’t have a lot of time left. The bite is slowly eating at him and pretty soon he will be dead and not my problem anymore.
’’Why not, what if this affects our relationship?’’
The fact that vampires might likely react to my bite could affect our relationship. How will it work if I become venomous to the vampires—especially when my mate is one? I am thinking of worst-case scenarios. The things that could go wrong. I know I should be looking at the positives. I mean, through all the bad, there have been magnificent good. So why do I keep thinking of what could go wrong instead of what is already right?
’’Babe, I think we have established that our relationship cannot be broken. Take the last hour for example.’’ He winks at me and my cheeks redden, completely being a shy mess right now. This man can make me into a gooey mess without even trying hard. It drives me insane.
I look away from him and back to the road because right now, I need to stay focused and no matter how much I might like to deny it, Lanis is a distraction. I want us to just be able to forget about all the drama and problems but I know I can’t just yet. We might have Cassius but Fallon is still somewhere on the loose and he might think I have forgotten about everything he did but it will always be at the back of my mind and he will have to be punished for all his wrongdoings.
We get to the hotel and the same lady that took us to the room does the same. Once inside and next to each other on the couch, he smiles at me and my heart melts. ’’You know you got this... right?’’
I nod, suddenly with his words of encouragement, it feels like I can do anything. I almost feel like I am on the top of words. Is this what it is to be confident?
Atieno walks into the room, he is dressed in black slacks and a white shirt that looks way too loose for him. There is a smile on his face as he sits down opposite us ’’Thought we were on for today?’’ he questions.
We agreed to let them come to the community, as today was supposed to be the day that Cassius came but plans changed and I feel like they changed for the better. Even with his surprise and his witchcraft, things went okay.
’’We have Cassius.’’
He opens his eyes wide. I can tell why he would be surprised. Cassius has been tormenting everyone for so long, and now his reign is over. ’’He came early?’’
I nod.
’’Is he...’’
I know what he wants to ask. He wants to know if he is dead. It irritates me that they care about him to that point that they don’t want him dead. They want to protect a man that has killed thousands of people. How does that even make any sense?
’’He is not dead.’’
’’Why are you here, I thought you made it clear that you weren’t going to spare his life.’’
’’I am not sparing him. Cassius cannot survive after everything he has done. He needs to suffer for all his crimes. I need to pay him back in ten folds.’’
’’How do you plan on doing that?’’
I take a deep breath because there is the chance that they will not lend me the only person that can get him to feel all the remorse and guilt that he needs to feel. I know how I can find all the vampires. Eligio can get into Cassius’s head. Once we know where there are, there will be no reason to keep him alive. I will not be content until I see that suffering. The pain that will come once he realizes.
’’I need Gyles.’’
He frowns and then I watch him as his brows furrow in confusion ’’the boy has done nothing. He doesn’t even know what is happening.’’
I think he is misunderstanding me ’’I don’t plan on causing any harm to him. I just want to make Cassius see that everything was for nothing. I want to give him the chance to actually regret all his actions.’’
’’And you think Gyles is the person for that?’’
I nod.
’’The boy doesn’t even speak. How is he supposed to help you when he doesn’t even know who he is? I don’t think you should involve him in all that.’’
As usual, he will be difficult, it is not like I expected him to just hand over Gyles. These are the same people that said I shouldn’t kill Cassius. They think differently from us.
’’I think he at least deserves to see him before he dies. You said it yourself, Cassius lost his humanity the day he lost Gyles. Let him die human—at least.’’
’’You still want to kill him?’’
I nod. ’’He is already dying.’’
’’How?’’
He must be wondering how someone that is meant to be immortal could possibly be dying. Vampires can only die when their heart is ripped out of their chests. It is instant, so to say a vampire is dying is weird. I get his confusion.
’’Will you give me Gyles for the day?’’ I ignore his question because I don’t think he needs to know the details. The Elis didn’t do anything to help us. For years, Cassius has been tormenting my people. For years, they didn’t involve themselves, so I don’t think they need to know anything about him and how he is going to die.
’’If you think this is a good idea. I cannot refuse you, after everything you and your family has been through.’’
This is the first nice thing this man has said to me. I appreciate his kindness, the fact that they have not tried to control my pack in any way. They not being involved helped us capture Cassius and now I will be able to watch him die. There is a relief that comes with knowing he is going to die. He will not bother me and my family after everything he has done.
’’If Gyles remembers and you use him. What happens then?’’
I think about his question because it is not like I think the guy deserves this but maybe this will be good for him too. ’’He will get to say goodbye to him. I think this is a win, win.’’
’’Okay Beau, in all this, I see that you are a man of adversary. It has been a pleasure knowing you.’’ He stands up and walks over to us. We both stand up from the couch as he smiles at us, outstretching his hand to me. I take his hand in mine, and the coldness of the touch catches me off guard. He laughs at my reaction ’’I have lived too long, cut me some slack,’’ he winks and this time I smile back at him. Atieno is not as scary as Lanis makes him out to be. In fact, I think he might be the friendliest of his siblings.
Maybe it is a good thing that I didn’t get to meet them ’’Let me go and get him, he shouldn’t be a problem. As long as he is fed blood.’’
I nod as he leaves us in the room alone. Lanis grabs my hand in his and pulls me closer to him. ’’See, wasn’t so hard,’’ he winks. I kiss him on the lips and this makes him smile almost proudly.
’’Why does it feel like they want to save him. it seems like I am doing something monstrous.’’
He shakes his head ’’this is the right thing to do. Even If he wasn’t dying, he still needs to. Someone has to pay for all the hurt he has caused. He can’t just go scot-free.’’
The door opens before I can respond to him and Atieno walks into the room with Gyles at his back. The man still looks exactly like he did all those years ago. It is uncanny,
’’My sister wants to go with you, she wants to say goodbye.’’
His sister. The one that knew where Cassius was and didn’t do anything. I don’t know how I feel about that ’’Please give her the chance. Cassius is the only man she has ever loved. Please.’’
I take a deep breath and look at Lanis.
What is the harm?
Chapter 167: Selfishness
Beau.
Meeting Lucinda is different from Atieno. She has this aura about her that screams hostility. She is not as easy to talk to as her brother. It is not like I have plans of making conversation but I mean, you’re in a car with two people, and you should at least be semi-friendly. We get to the community in no time and I am glad because the silence is fucking awkward.
’’We’re here,’’ I announce like I actually need to when it is very. She is the first to get off and I watch her as she walks over the pathway that leads to the gate. How did she even know? It’s not like she has ever been here before. I take a quick glance at Lanis and he smiles at me brightly ’’this will all be over soon,’’ he assures me.
I can’t wait to get rid of all these worries that come with Cassius. The only worry I want to have, are things concerning the pack and Lanis. Cassius’s drama has been dragged for too long. Gyles is still at the back seat. He doesn’t make a move to get out of the car. Looking at his eyes through the rearview mirror, It almost feels like he is there but pretending not to. I don’t know if he really knows what is going on and frankly, I don’t really care. Their story is sad, the only thing that makes me even feel a little bit sad for the bustard but all the bad things he has done make up for it.
’’We need to get him out of the car,’’ I tell Lanis as we both get down from the car. Lucinda is still waiting for us. Almost like she thinks we will speed this up because she is here. I don’t hold her on a high horse. How can she love someone like the man? I don’t even understand Cassius. He wasn’t a vampire when he was so in love with Gyles. He should have found his link when he was turned.
Maybe Gyles was his link and since he wasn’t really dead, he was alone?
’’I’ll handle this, can you get Eligio. I need to talk to him about something.’’
I don’t want to get sidetracked, getting Cassius reunited with Gyles is not the priority. Finding all the vampires’ links are. If Eligio can get into his mind, we won’t need him to tell us. Then we could get them and everyone will be happy.
’’Okay,’’
We all walk into the community together and part ways, since we are heading in different direction ’’He is not such a bad person, he just has a bad life,’’ Lucinda speaks once Lanis is gone. I look at her with confusion. I don’t know if she is talking about Cassius but she can’t be for real right now.
’’Just because you have a tough life doesn’t mean you should make other people’s life miserable.’’
That is how I see it but I can see where she is coming from, she loves the guy. So in her eyes, he could kill everyone and she will still see him as someone worth saving. ’’Is there any way you can give him another chance. See the kind of person he really is?’’ she smiles at me, her dimples pressing into her face. is this supposed to make me agree with her?
This is one of the original vampires. The first of her kind ever and she is trying to convince me that a killer can still be saved. There really is no convincing me, so I remain quiet as we get to the house that he is being kept. We have never really believed in reformism in the pack, that is why we don’t have cells that can be used as prisons. There was no reason to keep anyone on lockdown. It is just a small community.
I leave Gyles in the house, not sure how I intend on showing him to Cassius. I am so eager to see the pain he will feel after he sees him but I want to give Lucinda her chance with him. He might not react well to the whole thing, and in turn not give her the goodbye she desperately craves.
’’I plan on going in with you, cause I don’t trust you,’’
She nods in understanding, I mean I just met her for the first time today. Who knows if she plans on taking Cassius with her? There is no way in hell I will let anyone make me lose guard of this situation. Cassius looks up immediately the door is closed. I see the sigh of frustration as it leaves his lips. It doesn’t even look like he wants to see her. She walks over to him ’’Here to laugh at me?’’ he mutters with disinterest.
I stay by the corner of the room because I shouldn’t even be part of this conversation. Lucinda goes on one knee, now she is so close to him. Her eyes move back and forth. She is looking at the damage. The damage I caused. I am proud to say that this is all because of me. I will do it again in a heartbeat.
’’I came to see you, Cassius, you know I will never laugh at you.’’
He rolls his eyes, ’’Well you see me, I am dying. All my efforts for nothing,’’ he tells her just as his eyes shift to my direction and I look away from him, totally feeling uncomfortable at this moment.
’’You don’t have to die, you need to make amends before it is too late.’’
’’There is no making amends. I didn’t do anything wrong, I will never stop trying to make things right." I look at him again and there is no remorse in his eyes. He still thinks he is doing the right thing and as long as he is alive he will be stuck in the notion that he is doing the right thing. Killing innocent children and helpless people, killing people that didn’t do anything to you.
’’This is where you are wrong Cassius.’’ I interrupt them, slowly walking into the room. He looks up at me and the anger is evident on his face. He hates me so much, I don’t blame him, and I feel the same way about him. ’’You did all this because you are selfish, you were thinking about yourself, you didn’t do this for anyone but yourself,’’ I stop in front of him even though Lucinda’s eyes are pleading with me, I am not going to stand here and let him act all high and mighty.
’’You will never understand. No matter how much I show you,’’ he replies me with a chesty cough. Blood splatters out of his mouth. I look at his neck and the infection seems to be spreading, down his chest and arms. Yeah, it doesn’t look like he has much time left.
’’You’ve shown me everything, there is no more convincing me that this was an act of selfishness. You didn’t do this for Gyles. You used him as an excuse to show the real you. The monster that you are.’’
He sighs again but remains quiet.
Lucinda stands up and drags me away from him ’’Why are you doing this. Let me just talk to him first. You don’t understand anything,’’ she accuses me angrily.
’’What if I ripped out his heart yesterday, what if he was already dead, would you have the chance to redeem him?’’ I ask her wanting to rile her up even the more. She is standing there, trying to convince me that there is still a chance for him. How the fuck can she stay loving him.
If the tables were turned and this was Lanis. I will not blindly take his side. I wouldn’t continue pining over a man that has hurt so many souls.
’’Do you even want him to say goodbye to Gyles or are you just doing this out of your own selfishness?’’ She asks me.
’’Gyles?’’ Cassius interrupts us and for the first time today, I see interest in his eyes, mixed with confusion. I totally forgot that his sense of hearing is still very sharp. He has been listening to us. Just a mention of that guy’s name and he suddenly wants to engage in conversation. Even in this weakened state.
I walk away from Lucinda because I have given her the goodbye she wanted. There is nothing more I can do for her relationship with him. I want to end this now, there is no more debating it.
’’Yes, he is still alive. The man you were fighting for never died.’’ I stop in front of him again. His eyes remain wide from the shock of my words but there is also a hint of disbelief in them. He doesn’t believe me. Did he even search for him or did he just accept his death?
’’That’s impossible.’’
I nod, I expected this reaction that is why I brought Gyles to the community. He will not believe it until he sees him. ’’Why don’t I show you?’’
Chapter 168: Cassius and Gyles.
Cassius.
This must be a joke to them.
They are trying to get me back and he is using the one person that has slowly become my weakness. He knows that Gyles has my heart. He knows how I feel about him. He felt everything when I showed him and now he is using my hospitality against me.
All I feel is weakness.
I can’t move, breathing has become so hard and my eyes keep closing. Staying awake has suddenly become very hard. I haven’t had blood all day. They won’t feed me. It is all part of their plans to kill me but I am sure they want me to suffer first. That is alright. I am ready to die, I have been ready to die since I lost him.
It feels like a million years as I wait for him to come back. He said Gyles was alive, I heard him loud and clear. That is not possible. I remember everything.
It rings in my head every single day of my life.
The fire, the burns, his clothes in the pile.
You didn’t see a body.
A part of my mind reminds me. Yes, I never saw his body but I felt his presence. He is dead. They killed them all. I remember it all.
I am counting the seconds in my head. Lucinda is still watching me. I don’t know why she is here. What the fuck does she even want? I never had the same kind of love for her that she has for me. They are the ones that turned me into this monster. They took me in when I was ready to die. I didn’t want all the power they poured on me. I didn’t want the love they gave me. I didn’t want to live a happy and semi-normal life. The only person I wanted, died leaving me alone. Now she is here for what?
’’You should leave. Why are you even here?’’ I ask her dryly.
She sighs ’’I came to say goodbye, I hear what happened and I needed to see you.’’ She gets down on her knee again and her eyes bore into mine ’’I can heal you. Before he gets back. I am not ready to say goodbye.’’ She whispers.
This is an opportunity. ’’Do what you have to do,’’ I tell her because I haven’t finished what I started. Dying right now will be futile and is something I am not ready for yet.
I let out a cough as she reaches for me. Her hands touch my neck, the part that is contaminated. I don’t even know how this happened. That fucking mutt bite is venomous. The light that shines during her healing process emanates out. I watch her as she gives me all her energy. This is like the most intimate process for a vampire. I don’t know what will happen if Beau walks in right now.
’’Hurry up,’’ I shout at her.
Her eyes open ’’I am trying, something is wrong.’’
It seems like it is not working. Why is it not working?
Her breathing spikes, as she tries even harder with shaky hands. I am not healing. With a jolt, she jumps away from me with so much force ’’Fuck,’’ she cries out in pain. I have never seen Lucinda in pain. She is the strongest of her siblings but this is the weakest I have ever seen her.
Her powers didn’t work.
Fucking hell.
’’How is this possible?’’ she asks me, she should have the answers to all this. She is an original vampire.
’’Your powers are useless,’’ I blame her in anger. There is no use for her anymore ’’Leave, I don’t need you here,’’ I dismiss her cruelly. Her eyes open wide and I see the shock and pain in them. The door to the room opens and I direct my attention there. Immediately I see him, I freeze in shock. Completely in disbelief. I don’t even look at Beau or Lucinda anymore. All my attention is stuck on the man in front of me. He is exactly like I remember, all those memories that I never forgot. The smiles, the laughter all the love he showed me. His beautiful eyes, the crinkle on his temple when he teased me.
It is all there.
I try to stand up but the minute I pull the chains, I feel the burns immediately. Screaming out in pain, I fall back to my knees. ’’Please bring him closer,’’ I beg desperately for some contact. I don’t know if this is all a dream. I might not even be awake right now. Lord knows how many times I have concocted memories of him. I have held him, kissed him so many times in my dreams.
’’Do you deserve that?’’ Beau’s voice comes into play. I force my eyes away from Gyles painfully and to him. There is a victorious smile on his face. He is too happy for my liking. This is his way of letting me know that he has won.
Game fucking over.
’’Please, I know I don’t deserve anything. I just need to know if he really is the one.’’
From seeing him, I can tell that something is wrong. His eyes are open and he is standing but he hasn’t said anything. Something must have happened to him all those years. Someone must have done something to him.
’’I didn’t bring him here for a reunion. I just wanted you to see that all along, he was alive and instead of focusing on finding him, you chose to go with the anger in your heart. You killed all those innocent people for nothing.’’
He has said this so many times. Gyles wouldn’t want you to do this. Gyles wouldn’t be happy with you. I didn’t listen. I wanted to avenge his death. I killed all those people for him and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
I try to fight the tears, stay strong in front of the love of my life. This is the first time since he died that I feel tears in my eyes. I blocked my emotions. Let it all out and now, just seeing him again is bringing it all out.
Fuck.
’’Please,’’ I beg him on repeat.
’’This is not fair, let him see him, ’’ Lucinda takes my side. I am grateful to her. I press my palms on my knees. All the weakness that I felt earlier evaporates. Even if I am dying right now, I just need to be with him. I need to hold him. ’’it’s the least you can do,’’ She adds.
Beau frowns ’’what about you? You knew about this for a while and you didn’t think to tell him.’’
I look away from him immediately as the words leave his lips. Her eyes are wide from the shock of his revelation. The anger I feel suddenly cloud all the sadness in me.
’’You knew,’’ I ask pulling at the chains angrily. She takes a step away from me.
’’I can explain. It was supposed to be a surprise. I wanted to get him back to the way he was.’’
Surprise?
I have carried so much hate for a whole breed for years and now she is saying this bullshit. All along, she could have told me about him. I would have had more time with him. Now I might be dying and she is saying surprise.
What bullshit is this?
’’You lied to me, you kept seeing me when you knew the person I was fighting for was alive.’’ my anger cannot be contained by the chains and with enough pull, they are off me as I ignore all the burns on my flesh. What is the point of anything? I am already dying.
I jump so fast, that no one expects is and grab her by her neck. She screams out from the pain of my grip. If Lucinda wants to, she can take me but I know that I am her weakness. She wouldn’t fight me.
She has never been able to fight me and for the first time, it has come to my advantage.
’’I am sorry,’’ she pleads with so much difficulty.
’’You’re sorry? You ruined my life.’’ I shout. The moment Beau gets to me, I feel him. His scent is strong and very different. Suddenly I am afraid of him. The fear that he could end my life before I even get close to Gyles. Gyles is here and I am focusing on all my anger.
’’Let go of her,’’ he warns me.
I obey immediately not even wanting to be on his bad side right now. I am not ready to die without even saying goodbye. Not yet. I let go of her and she coughs as she grabs her neck.
’’You cut my chains,’’ he accuses me.
I look at the mess, I look at my wrists. They are bruised so bad and not healing. The one thing a vampire should always be able to do—heal and I can’t anymore.
’’I will leave you with him, for five minutes. Don’t make me regret this.’’
With that, he takes Lucinda with him and walks out of the room. Now I am alone with Gyles.
Chapter 169: Last request
Cassius
He leaves us alone and my eyes stay fixed on the only man I have ever loved. He is still standing by the door. There is no life in his eyes. What happened to him?
’’Gyles,’’ I call his name before taking a step towards him. He doesn’t respond to me but that doesn’t stop me. I wish he would just come back to the way he was, remember me. A lot has changed about me. I grew up before I was turned. To him, I might be a different person and he wouldn’t even remember me but I remember everything. All the pain from my wound, the pain in my chest, they all vanish at this moment because I am with him again. ’’It’s me, Rogers,’’ I tell him the name I haven’t used in a long time. I gave up that name the day I lost him. I didn’t want to remember all the bad things. I wanted to let go of the past but I couldn’t. No matter how hard I tried, he was always on my mind.
I could never wipe him away.
No matter how hard I tried.
I reach for him, I can see his pupils as they shift slowly, he is looking at me but he doesn’t react. He just stands there and all I want to do is wrap my arms around him. Will I be allowed to do that?
I stop in front of him. Now we are just inches apart. I want to show him everything. I don’t know if I still have the energy to. I am so weak that I feel like I could drop dead any minute. I should gather strength. I already know that I am almost at the end of the road.
I don’t want to lose the opportunity to say goodbye to him. I want him to remember me. I want to know what happened to him all those years ago.
Who took him?
Why did they take him in the first place?
I stretch my hands out painfully until they are on his face, just on each side of his temple. He doesn’t push me away or fights back. His expression remains blank and that just tugs at my heartstrings more. I hate the way he is and just thinking about how he has had to suffer for so long like this makes it hurt the more. There is a memory that I could show him, one that I am very sure will bring him back if it doesn’t, I don’t know what else to do.
Closing my eyes, I muster up all the strength I can. I show him my heart on a silver platter. I have done this for so many alphas in packs. The last one I did this to was Beau. I showed him my heart and he took it out and stomped all over it. This time, I hope Gyles will take my heart on a good note. I hope he will return it back to me the way I gave him. Clean and not shattered.
I take a deep breath, and even though it hurts to breathe, I let it all out. Feel it as it travels to him, a trip to the past. One that should remind him of the love I hold for him...
"Hey.’’ I look up and Gyles walks into the room. There is a smile on his face, he seems happier than he usually is. I love it when he smiles, somehow his smile always makes me smile. So, whenever he is in a good mood, it automatically transfers to me.
’’I have some good news,’’ he informs me, jumping on the bed and pulling me closer and into his arms. I rest my head on his chest because this is my most comfortable place. Just being close to him in his arms is my happiness.
’’What is it?’’ I ask him curiously.
He was turned a week ago. On his eighteen birthday father turned him into a vampire. That was always the plan. When they found Gyles, they were always going to turn him. I never really heard the story of how he was found. I just know that he was not in a good situation. Whatever it was, I don’t even think I want to know. Being abandoned as just a kid and then having no one was not the best thing but having people but not being treated right could be the worst.
’’I asked him about you again and he said we will talk about it on your eighteenth birthday.’’
I don’t know how I feel about turning into a vampire. Gyles is already different. He is more beautiful and don’t get me wrong, he has always been beautiful but now, there is a shine to him. One that makes him outstanding. He is stronger, happier and more accepting of himself.
He said I would only understand when I am like him. The only way we can be together is if we are the same. I still have two years to go and even though I am not sure how I feel about this, I know I want to be with him.
’’Is that the news?’’
He nods his head and then plants a kiss on my temple ’’you know what that means?’’
I know what he is talking about. We have been taking things slow. He still looks at me like a kid but the age difference between us is not that far off. I want things to go further between us. The love I feel for him is pouring out of me that the spillover is evident. I wait for him to speak but he just leans forward until his lips are just an inch away from me. I can feel his breath on me. it is hot and the goosebumps crawl all over my skin. We have kissed before, countless times but he tries to control his emotions. He wants to see me as a kid even though there is barely an age gap between us.
’’We can be together. We can kiss, touch.... Have sex,’’ he winks and my heart melts in my chest.
God, he is teasing me and I like it so much. I love everything about him and it is driving me crazy. Sex is like the most appealing thing to me right now. I never even thought I would think about it as something that I could look forward too.
’’You will officially become mine,’’ he breathes before smashing his lips to mine. My legs trample as he grabs my waist until I am on him with my legs in between. Kissing Gyles is the most intense feeling ever. Whenever our lips merge together, I feel one with him. I feel the butterflies, the intensity of the kiss escalates.
I love this man so much.
I feel him push away from me immediately. With all the strength I have lost, this gets me out of the trance I wanted him in and puts me on the floor of this basement. My eyes shoot open and he is pressed on the wall, his eyes are wide. Tears welling in the brim of them. There is a difference to him before he was blank and not really here but now, I feel him coming out of whatever trance he was put in. whoever did this to him, ruined my life and his.
I struggle to get up on my feet, he watches me, still quiet. Oh, how I wish to hear his voice. The only sound that can ever make me forget all my problems. I know I don’t deserve this, this feels like a second chance, a chance to redeem myself and after all, I have done, I don’t deserve this opportunity.
The door opens and Beau walks into the room. He looks at Gyles immediately. His brows furrow in confusion when he sees that he is crying.
’’What did you do to him?’’ he accuses me and I don’t blame him. I am associated with murder and anger. There is no way, he will see the good in me—if there is even any good left in me.
’’Nothing,’’
He shakes his head in disbelief. I don’t want to let him go yet. He didn’t even remember me ’’Times up. Hope you’ve said all the goodbyes you can.’’
I walk over to Gyles hurriedly and Beau glares at me warningly ’’don’t you dare.’’
’’Please, i am not done,’’ I beg him desperately.
When it comes to Gyles, I have no pride. I want to be with him until my dying day. Can’t they at least just let me spend the rest of my life with him?
’’I gave you enough time. Do you actually think you deserve the kindness I have shown you?’’
He is right and I can’t fight him on that. I have been nothing but cruel to him and his kind. I don’t deserve anything but that is the difference between us. I am a monster and he is a decent person.
"Please."
He sighs "I don’t trust you."
I nod ’’I am dying anyway. I just want to be with him. Give me one last act of kindness.’’ This is all I can do. I can only plead that he will at least just do this for me.
He lets out a sigh ’’The Elis only gave me him for a couple of hours.’’
"Just one night. You can have him tomorrow, I won’t beg you after that, let me just help him remember. He doesn’t deserve to be this way.’’
He looks at Gyles in the corner and he is still crying. I want to hold him s bad but not until I get the permission.
"One night."
Chapter 170: The Alpha I have become
Beau.
"You need to tell me where you kept all the links. That is the only way I will agree to this.’’ I tell him because there is this saying: a favour for a favour. He looks around the room. For the first time, I see shame in his eyes. All the things he did. That remorse and guilt that I was looking for are finally showing.
I gave him the chance to die as a decent person. I don’t know what will happen to him in the afterlife. He lived this life wrongly, so he might end up suffering in the next but at least, he has the chance to repent.
"I don’t know if I can ever make up for all I have done. I don’t even deserve your kindness. This is more than I expected from you, Beau.’’ He manages this awkward smile but for the first time, I feel it is sincere.
I know I can never fully trust him. I don’t want to chain him up but I plan on guarding the place, so he can’t escape. I am not taking any chances with him. He is still the same person he was a couple of hours ago. He is still responsible for so many deaths and I don’t plan on forgetting all that he did.
"You can save your apologies, Cassius. Just tell me where they are,’’ I dismiss him completely. No in the spirits of forgiving him.
He sighs loudly and with that, the information I needed comes out in the light. He kept them in the Brightwood family mausoleum. Apparently, they are all in a sleep state. There was no way for them to even try and escape and that was why their links couldn’t feel them. It is sad that he could think so far ahead just shows how vindictive he is but I am over judging him. I am overall the anger and hate. Things have finally calmed down and I don’t want to stir any pots. I just want a peaceful life with Lanis and our beautiful babies that I plan on having with him.
Gosh, it is so weird that I am looking forward to it when I am not so certain that it will come to pass. I leave Cassius in the room and go out of the house. Lucinda frowns at me. She is upset with me but I don’t give a damn. This is not my fault. She came here thinking she could be a hero in Cassius’s mind and somehow he would give her the love she desperately craves. His heart belongs to that man in the room. There is no one else that can take it.
’’I think you need to let go of that man. He is not worth it.’’
She shakes her head "He is my link. How do you let go of your reason for life.’’
I frown. To me, it seems like Gyles is Cassiuss’s link but then again, Cassius wasn’t a vampire when he met him. He wasn’t even a vampire when he died. So why is she really holding unto the man so much? It all doesn’t make that much sense to me. Like thinking about it but at the end of the day, no one really understands love. It is a messed up situation that can’t be explained.
"He is dying,’’ I tell her because I need her to leave here knowing that this might be the last time she will ever see him. If by some miracle, Cassius doesn’t die. I will kill him.
That is the punishment that he deserves.
"I know.’’
"So why are you still fighting. Let go of him; it is for the best.’’
"Do you know what it means to be rejected by your link? Do you know the heartache and pain that comes with it? Death is an easy way out.’’ She cries. Suddenly I feel her pain. It is not her fault that he was chosen for her and maybe she was supposed to be the one to make him a better person but I don’t want to say that she didn’t try hard enough because I don’t know how she handled things. Looking at things now, it actually seems like she didn’t try hard enough.
"Isn’t there a way to shut the pain off?’’ I genuinely want to help her. If there is anything I can do. I will gladly do it. As long as I have a way to help her.
"I have to live the rest of my life with that pain..." she looks away from me and then lets out a long breath "It is such a long life.’’
That is the truth. Our lives are long. it comes with the powers. I don’t think this is the end for her. She doesn’t have to be alone. She is choosing to linger onto someone that doesn’t want her. Thinking about it, how would I have handled Lanis not wanting me back? It is something I don’t even like to think about.
I am glad I don’t have to go through the pain and trauma that comes with that. As an alpha, I won’t be doomed to death like the omegas but my wolf would wilt away. Slowly eating at my insides and I will have to become a lone wolf that won’t be able to live in a pack. Uncle Jules is a lone wolf and even though I don’t know his story, I think it runs along the lines of being rejected by his mate.
The worst thing that could happen to a wolf.
"I should leave, I am most definitely not wanted here.’’
"I can take you back,’’ I suggest but she just brushes it off.
I watch her leave at the same time Lanis comes into view, Eligio is next to him and they seem to be laughing at something. God, seeing him laugh is the best feeling ever. Cassius affected us all in so many ways, I don’t even want to think about it. He looks up and our eyes meet. My heart does this flip in my chest. His smile widens. They stop in front of me and I force my eyes away from him and to his brother "I already know where they are. Cassius is one sick motherfucker.’’
"How did you get it out of him?’’
"I had to let him stay with Gyles longer. Okay, maybe not really but Gyles would be spending the night with him.’’
They both frown "Do you think that is a good idea?" Lanis asks.
I look at him again, the warmth heating up in my chest "Not really, I will stay here all night if I have to. I just feel like he deserves a dying wish."
"The man killed so many people, he doesn’t deserve anything.’’
"Gyles deserves to remember him. He seems to think he can bring him out of this funk. Let’s see if he will be successful.’’
They have a point but I am someone that gives people chance. I don’t want to condemn him for all that his done because I don’t want to become a heartless person. I will always see the good in people, I will always believe they can change. No matter what.
"I take it I am not needed anymore. Permission to go back home,’’ Eligio asks with an amused smile on his face. Things are looking brighter. Everything is looking better.
"We need to get Jabi and the omegas back. Call Darrien.’’ I tell him as walks away, leaving me and Lanis alone. Just the way I like it.
"We should call Bade.’’
I nod. "There is no hiding anymore. Things are looking up.’’ I still have fears that things will go wrong. That is not over. Cassius will be one step ahead and get to us again but looking at Lanis and the way I feel, I know that there is nothing to worry about. "So are we spending the night here?’’
I nod.
He groans "Fuck, can he just die already."
I laugh. Yeah, I feel this way too. I am not saying there wouldn’t be threats—hell, my uncle is still a big threat to us and I can’t relax on him. I am going to start a hunt for him. I have to find him before he tries anything. That is the plan but right now, I have to deal with one problem at a time.
"Come on,’’ I grab his hand in mine and pull him to the house. All the rooms in this house are empty. Cassius is in the basement but there is one room that has a bed. I lead him to the room, remembering all the times I would sneak girls into the community. Rex would always get me out of the messes I put myself in. Father thought I would never grow up. I lived a life that you can call childish but looking at him, I see the man I have become. He has made me a better, stronger person.
He has made me the Alpha that I have become.
