Ch. 76..80: The Werewolf's Vampire Mate Chapter 76-80
Chapter 76: The bad guys never die easy.
Beau.
As the water hits my skin, I feel the relief I didn’t know I needed. It is been days since I last felt water on my skin. I didn’t know how valuable this moment could ever be until now. The things in life that we take for granted. I have been in the shower for longer than I should. it is so serene, something I didn’t even know I needed.
Alanis left me hard and dry, I know he is trying his best to control himself. He doesn’t want to make this about sex. Frustratingly, I still can’t believe I have been unable to have sex with him for so long. This whole mating process has been one long drag. I am getting tired of it all. I want to do this on my own. I want to mate with him so badly.
I hear the door open, my heart stops for a millisecond because I am scared that It could be someone other than him. I don’t need an ambush right now. I am still not strong enough. What if Cassius found me?
My heart races against my chest from just the thought of it. I leave the water running and get out of the shower. Grabbing a towel, I put it around my waist because I need to be prepared. No matter what happens this time, I have to try.
I stay behind the door. The best thing I can do is a sneak attack. Catch whoever it is off guard. I take a sniff and his scent surrounds me. releasing a sigh of relief, I walk out of the room, knowing full well that It is Lanis. He looks up from a duffel bag and smiles at me warmly.
’’I got you some of my clothes.’’
He stretches a shirt out for me and I walk over to him with the towel around my waist. He pulls me into his arms and I take a long sniff, letting his scent fill me in completely. He smells like home, the home I long for. the home I belong to. I don’t want to ever lose that home.
’’I also brought food.’’
For the first time, I notice other bags on the table. There are a total of four bags. I can smell the meat immediately. My body reacts to the scent, eager for a taste. I don’t know how he got this but I am grateful. I let go of him and walk over to the table. I notice the one that has the meat and grabs that one immediately. It is so bloody, so enticing. This is exactly what I need, this will make me feel like myself again.
’’Where did you get this from?’’ I ask him intrigued.
He never ceases to amaze me.
This is my man.
’’I got it from an abattoir. I had to do a to of convincing,’’ he tells me proudly ’’What are the odds that there would be one so close by,’’ he beams in question.
I shrug become I am a salivating mess over this. I need to dive in before I lose my mind. he nudges with his head, his way of telling me to dig in. this is the meat of a cow, it is still bloody and juicy. All meat, no bones. I sit down on the chair in front of the table. note that I am still in a towel but all my attention is on the display in front of me and all Alanis’s attention is all on me. I grab a piece of meat and it literally feels like heaven to me. this is another moment; where I appreciate the little things in my life. food, I never knew a day would come where I wouldn’t be able to hunt but Cassius made that possible. I lost a part of myself because of that man, I promise, I will get it back and I will make sure I kill him.
He will not torture another wolf as long as I live.
I place the meat in between my lips and the first bite is heaven. Pure and unfiltered bliss.
Lanis watches me as I devour all the meat in the bag and slowly, I feel more energetic. I feel a little another piece of me being put back together. All thanks to the man in front of me.
How did I get so lucky?
’’Is it good,’’ he asks me with a little piece of meat stuck on the side of my mouth. I try to get it off but he reaches for me and wipes it off for me. I grab his hand before he can take it away. There is a mess on my hands but he doesn’t seem to mind as I smudge the bloody mess unto him.
’’Thank you for this.’’
He furrows his brows as I pull him closer ’’You need to stop thanking me. I would do everything and a million more in a heartbeat. You are my life, the only reason why I am living.’’
His words are like a comfort to me. the best feeling ever is to love and be loved in return. The fact that he has the same emotions and they drive him closer to me, is everything.
’’I will get him,’’ I assure him.
He shakes his head ’’You are not alone. We will do this together. you have to trust me. There’s no I. We will fight him together and this time, we will win.’’
He is the most encouraging person I know. This man is the love of my life. I have never been more grateful to the deities as I am at this moment. I will never take him for granted. I will always be there for him; I hope to live a long life with him. I wish to wake up next to him, I wish to go to bed every night in his arms. I want to be stronger, a better fighter, to protect him. I have a list of things to do, to become better, better to be proud to call him mine.
I will make sure I am all the things and more for him.
*********************
We get back on the road and it takes another couple of hours to get to his house. All through the drive, there are thoughts roaming in my head. There is no time to waste, I have to go back home. Make sure everything is okay with the pack. I have been gone for too long and they must all be so very worried.
I asked Isabelle about it and she has been avoiding giving me an answer. I can tell something is wrong from all their expressions on their faces. I don’t want to go too far and think it is something serious when it might just me minor, so I have been trying to avoid assumptions that are farfetched.
Eligio parks the car in the driveaway and they all shuffle out of the car one by one. I stay seated and Lanis watches me, almost like he knows something is up.
’’Are you okay?’’ he probes.
I nod.
Shaking his head ’’I can tell something is bothering you. Remember, we promised to communicate?’’
’’Yeah,’’ I admit defeatedly with a loud huff. He waits for me ’’No one is saying anything about the pack. Did something happen?’’
His eyes dart away from my mine and everything becomes clear. There is definitely something wrong with the pack.
’’Is rex okay, Jabi, what are you not telling me?’’ I inquire immediately.
He runs his hands through his hair. This is harder for him that I thought. I need him to tell me what happened and I need to know now. I am still the Alpha. I am the one that was supposed to protect the pack. I wasn’t there but I am here now.
’’Your uncle.’’
The last time I saw Fallon, he was bleeding beneath me and almost dead. I hope he is about to tell me that he is dead. All the bitter parts of me silently pray that those are the words that are about to come out of his mouth. I know better, I am used to disappointment, I know things won’t be that easy. He is a bad guy but they are usually the hardest to kill.
Deep down I know he is not dead.
I could wish for that but it will never happen.
’’He took over the pack.’’
His words are earth-shattering. Hear breaking and mind-numbing. I can’t even imagine that they will let him into their hearts knowing full well he killed my father. something must be wrong, there is no way. I won’t accept it.
I let go of his hand and get down from the car.
Alanis runs out with me and grabs my hand to stop me from my outburst. I am getting angry, when I am angry, I can’t stop myself. This is me reacting to the fact that the man who killed my father could be accepted by the people I am supposed to call family.
Chapter 77: I want to live
Jabi.
’’Stay with me.’’
Those words have been stuck to my mind all day. Like how is it even possible? why would he want to be with me?
I remember the words we exchange after. They make my heart race. This man somehow has found a way into my heart. Slowly, he has crawled into the place I never welcomed anyone.
’’I have an apartment. Not too far from the house. Stay there with me. I will take care of you.’’
Shaking my head in disbelief ’’How, why? I am so confused,’’ I mutter still at a loss for words.
He smiles, that deep smile that somehow you can see it in your eyes and my heart melts. I am one hundred percent attracted to Darrien. The way he looks, from his face to his body. He is everything I want in a person but the way he looks at me shows anything but attraction.
He reaches for me. It is just a simple touch, nothing too extra but I didn’t know I needed this comfort from him until this moment. He rests his hand on my shoulder and for the first time in a long time I exhale out all the pent-up frustration, all the pain, all the suffering.
He doesn’t take his hand off me as he answers my question ’’I don’t know why; I just know that I want to. I want to be the one you depend on. I want to be the one that makes you smile; I want to go hunting with you. I want to be your everything.’’
It is almost like he doesn’t believe those words are coming out of his mouth. He seems as shocked as I am.
This is new to both of us.
I don’t know if I have the courage to dwell on him. To depend on him. I have never depended on anyone. Losing my parents at such a young age, I have always known not to expect anything from anyone. Beau is the only one that ever showed me a little kindness but I also never expected that kindness from him, I never felt entitled to it. The fact that it could end at any time always stayed at the back of my mind. I waited for him to give up on me, everyone in the pack said I was a lost cause. There was no way I would find an alpha. There was no way I would ever be loved. Now Darrien is here, telling me that he wants to do all these things for me and I believe him. there is no doubt in my mind that he is honest. The sincerity in the tone of his voice spills out and takes over my whole being.
’’And what happens when you don’t want to anymore?’’
He smiles, with his hand still on me and I wait for his response. People change, he could decide that he doesn’t want to have anything to do with me anymore. He is a vampire; I am a fucking werewolf. We are like water and oil, we don’t mix.
’’That’s not going to happen.’’
His words are assuring.
He makes me want this new life.
I will gladly abandon the pack.
Leave everyone behind for this life with him.
Maybe we can be water and oil after being mixed in the best kind of meal there is out there. I know a relationship can work between our kinds. Beau and Alanis make it work. I see the way he looks at him. I want that. I want it so bad.
I am not saying this is a relationship.
I know he doesn’t feel that way about me.
I wish he would but I know he doesn’t.
I don’t know what this is but being with him makes me feel better, makes me stronger. I haven’t felt this agile in a long time. I feel like I can take on the world. All my worries are slowly fading because of him.
’’Get your things and come back here, I want you to try and trust me.’’ my heart races at his words because I haven’t agreed but deep down. I know I would.
I will do anything to be close to him.
*****************
’’You are leaving,’’ Rex questions with raised brows. He doesn’t want me to leave. He says I am abandoning the pack.
I am saving myself.
I am being selfish for once in my life.
’’I am not leaving. I need to try, see how this will work with Darrien. He went hunting with me today. will you believe I went hunting without an Alpha and I didn’t die?’’
His eyes focus on the road but stray as I tell him what happened. The fact that I succeeded in hunting with Darrien just proves that whatever this is can work. I haven’t hunted since Beau went missing. No one in the pack wants to be involved with me. I am just a worthless omega. They don’t care about me.
’’That is impossible,’’ he mutters.
I smile.
’’It happened. Darrien cares about me. he wants to be there for me. something I can say no one else in that pack does.’’
’’That’s not fair,’’ he accuses.
I roll my eyes ’’You’ve gone hunting with Isabelle. Did you ever think to take me with you? Beau is the only one that even gave a shit about me. I am tired, tired of wanting to belong somewhere that I don’t. I think this is for the best.’’
This is all the anger within me bursting out. I have wanted to say those words for so long. I wanted to tell them all how I feel but I never had the courage. I never had the courage to speak up.
’’Things have been hectic. It slipped my mind,’’ he tries to justify but we both know that he just doesn’t care. He has his own problems. I am not trying to guilt-trip him. this is not about him but about me and why I need to leave. Now is the best time. There is no control in the pack. We keep deceiving ourselves. Deep down everyone knows Fallon is not the best leader. He is the villain in this story but the people left to decide that now is the time to be cowardice. No one wants to stand up against him and it is crumbling the pack.
’’You don’t have to explain. It is fine. I need to do this.’’
He sighs ’’They are going to get Beau back; Alanis is not coming back without him. Are you going to explain this to him?’’
I strongly believe that Beau will come back. He is a fighter and it is not easy to bring a fighter down. Alanis is strong too, he loves his mate, so that is enough to make him determined. I don’t know what they know because as usual, no one will tell me anything but I know that they have a lead. Before they left, Darrien told me to be back before they returned. He gave me the most beautiful smile and assured me that he was real. That this thing between us is real.
He has slowly become the push I need to keep on living. Dying seems like a distant memory. I don’t want to die; I want to live for him.
Rex parks his car in the lot that leads to our community. We are not supposed to be passing through the woods alone. Now, here we are two omegas, walking down this dangerous path alone. Especially at this time of the vampires hunting us.
It feels like something is wrong.
I am not one that is quick at sensing these things but the aura is strange. I feel a sensation within me and it terrifies me.
Rex doesn’t seem to notice anything as we continue on the pathway that leads to our home.
’’Something is wrong,’’ I manage pathetically trembling.
Rex stops walking and looks at me with uncertainty in his eyes. I frown because I don’t want to face whatever is happening. The closer we get to the community, the faster my heart races from the fear of the unknown. It is not a good idea to walk into whatever is happening blindly but Rex doesn’t seem to think there is anything wrong.
I walk behind him with shaking hands. It’s too quiet. The pack is never this quiet. We walk to the fences and I see it before he does. The blood on the wooden fence. It is a trail, almost like a fingerprint. Something is so wrong ’’Rex, stop,’’ I grab his hand before he can open the sliding fence.
Slowly pointing the blood his eyes open wide from shock as he takes a step back. A step away from the place that is supposed to be home ’’We need to get out of here,’’ I plead desperately.
The door opens before we have a chance to escape and a man walks out of it, completely covered in blood, from the smile on his face I can tell it’s not his. His scent is strong and very disgusting.
He is a vampire.
Shit.
I am not ready to die.
Not yet.
I just decided to live.
Chapter 78: Death.
Beau.
I bolt up from the bed as sweat trickles down my face, down to my torso. Alanis wants me to calm down, strategize. So, he kept me in his house. Sitting up on the bed, I run my hands through my hair in a frenzy. Bells is downstairs, I am supposed to rest for today. How can I rest now, knowing something is wrong?
Lanis’s room is empty. He allowed me to rest.
Rest, rest, rest.
I put on my shoes and rush out of the room. They are all in the living room of the house. Everyone including his father, mother, Belis, and Elu. I stop in front of the door as their words travel into my ears.
’’He is not strong enough,’’ Eligio mutters.
They are talking about me.
’’You don’t know that. Beau is a fucking fighter. He can take what is his back. We have to believe in him,’’ Lanis defends me.
Bells is quiet through all this. it is upsetting that she would sit down and listen to them bash me. okay, maybe this is an exaggeration, but they are all talking about me behind my back.
’’Can we just give him a couple of days to rest. He has been through o much, it took a lot from me to even get him to go to bed. He wants to go back.’’ Lanis voices out.
I walk out because I don’t want to be the creep who eavesdrop. They all look up when they see me and Lanis walks over to me, cheeks red from being caught ’’Why are you up?’’ he grabs my hands in his.
I sigh ’’I need to go home, something is wrong.’’
Bell’s stand up at my words ’’What do you mean?’’ she questions.
She has everything to lose if something has happened. Her mate is at the community. This has me even more worried.
’’I don’t know, something feels very off. I can feel it. I need to make sure everything is okay.’’
Everyone’s eyes are on me but the person who looks the most worried is Darrien. ’’Let me call Justin,’’ she reaches for her phone in her pocket and I watch her as she dials his number. Lanis is still watching me with concern in his eyes.
I know I worry him.
He doesn’t want me to leave his side, considering he just got me back. his eyes dart between mine and the rest of his family with trembling fingers. His fear shows without even a word. I am scared too but I need to make sure this is not just in my head.
With the phone pressed to her ear bells breathes out ’’He is not answering.’’ She trembles.
’’Try Rex,’’ I tell her.
His number goes straight to voicemail. My suspicions are right. Something must be wrong, or else why would they all not be answering their calls. I am dressed in a pair of shorts and my shoes. If something is wrong, I can’t go in there blindly. This is Cassius we are talking about. What if he found out about my escape? He could be here seeking his revenge. Using my family to get to me. he said he was going to watch me lose my whole family before he killed me. what if he wanted me to escape all along? So, I could go home?
’’I need your help; I need to go home but I can’t do it alone. Please come with us.’’
Having them with me will make my chance stronger. I need to make sure everyone is okay. Lanis said Fallon was in charge. I know for a fact; he is not strong enough. He can’t handle Cassius alone. Hell, I am not even strong enough.
’’You don’t know anything is wrong. You are just paranoid. I’ll go with you.’’ Alanis says as he reaches for me and grabs my hands in his.
’’I’ll go too.’’ I don’t question Darrien’s motive because I need all the hands I can get. The fact that he even offered in the first place means the world to me. he might be doing it for his own selfish reasons but I am okay with it.
My eyes roam towards bell’s and she is trembling. She has the most to lose. Fuck, Justin doesn’t even have a fighting chance. He is a turned beta, which occurred during the mating ceremony. Having the least experience as a wolf. The only thing he can do well is hunting and Bell’s always has to be present. I don’t know what could possibly be wrong but if by chance he is home and not somewhere else, then we have a lot to worry about.
Before I can try to say any comforting words, her phone rings and she jumps to answer it. I already know who it is from the expression on her face.
’’Baby,’’
She calls out with shaking hands. ’’Yes, don’t go home. I don’t know, we think something is wrong. Yeah, go to your mom’s house and wait for me there.’’ She ends the call and looks at me and I see the relief on her face. There are tears in her eyes, the kind of tears you could call happy tears. If Justin is okay, then nothing might be wrong. We might all just be overreacting.
I need to be sure that there is nothing wrong before I calm down. I have a plan; it is a not so simple plan. It will take a while to be strong enough to face Cassius. There is someone that can help me. he is in another town. A distant friend of my father Jules Briggs. he is going to train me. help me get stronger. I have already thought it through. It’s not going to be easy but I need to be able to protect Lanis. Our relationship is not going to be easy. We are definitely going to face others like Cassius and I want to be ready. I want to be strong enough to protect him.
I don’t want a situation like the last time to occur again. He can’t go through what he did when he came to help me. I don’t want to be the weak one. I am the Alpha. yes, it might be a pride thing. We are both men, there is no reason why I need to be the protector, there is no reason why he can’t do the honours but I need it for myself.
’’He is at school. I totally forgot that he was going today,’’ she says with a sigh of relief. She doesn’t need to explain but she continues ’’I told him to go to his mother’s house.’’
I nod.
’’Good let’s just make sure everything is good, I think we should run all the way. There is no time to take a car.’’ I think I am strong enough to turn. It has been a while since I turned but I’ve had meat and I feel a lot better than when I was in the cave. I have been thinking about the time I fought with Fallon. I didn’t fully turn. To be able to have that ability is a big gift, I just wish I could control it, make it happen when I want to. I haven’t really gotten to understand the powers that will come with being an alpha because I am technically not the Alpha yet.
All these things take time and it looks like time is not on my side. I grab her hands in mine because she just had a major scare. The thought of your mate even being in danger is maddening.
I know what she is going through.
I went through the same thing.
’’He’s safe. That is all that is important.’’
She nods. I face Lanis again, with worry etched on his face. He sighs loudly and I watch as his fingers dance around his hair. He doesn’t like this. he doesn’t want me to go back home because of all the uncertainty but I can’t run away from his worries.
I have to be strong.
The run to the community is fast with Lanis and Darrien trailing behind us. We get to the fence we had heightened as a form of protection. This was supposed to keep the vampires out. Before we even walk in, I can tell something is wrong. I smell all the blood. So much blood.
In my true form, I can’t say words. I can interact with them with my mind. the only thing I can do at this moment to express my disdain is a loud howl. This is the cry of a wolf. This is the only way our emotions can be heard and right now I am fucking broken.
I smash into the gate in one swift punch and the sight before me is nothing I ever wanted to witness. Death, death all around me.
My family.
The pack.
Completely destroyed.
Chapter 79: Worry mixed with hope.
Darrien.
From the moment Beau started panicking, I knew something was wrong. I couldn’t say anything because it was not certain. My heart hurt even before I knew anything was wrong. He was supposed to come back with his stuff.
I was going to take care of him.
All through the run to their community, so many fears ran through my mind. how will I react if something happened to him? this little kid, this guy that looks like life has dealt him with so much. I don’t think he has ever caught a break. Starved, abandoned.
I just met the kid but I want to be his everything.
Walking through those gates was the hardest couple of minutes of my life. I saw the blood, I could smell it before we even came close. Beau’s panic was more obvious than mine. This was not the time to show emotions. I don’t even know what to think right now.
If anything happens to him.
"Shit,’’ I hear one of us mutter but I am too in my head to even pay attention. The sight is not pretty. Beau is the first one to walk into the gates. He stops dead in his track and I hear the very slight gasp as it escapes from his lips. The sound is faint and so very painful.
A couple of people dead. Their blood on and surrounding them. I don’t know how many people have been killed because my eyes roam around the compound in search of Jabi. This is the most painful thing to witness but the only person I remotely care about is him. I don’t even want to pretend. Not seeing him right now is affecting me so much. I ignore everyone around and walk over to the bodies, one by one. Each person a relief to the fact that he is not the one lying down on this cold ground.
Beau is searching around frantic for hope, but the only people that are remotely conscious are crying out in sheer and utter pain. This is a terrible sight. This is something that no one should ever witness but here I am walking around, looking for one person and one person alone. I have the abilities to heal a bunch of these people but how can I when I need to find him.
’’Dar,’’ El grabs my hand to stop me from freaking the fuck out.
He is the only one that can sense the worry in my heart. I stop walking for a minute and face him. I didn’t even realize there are tears in my eyes until he places his hand on my shoulder, this is his way of comforting me.
’’He’s not here,’’ I speak for the first time. My voice is croaky, I have never sounded this pained in my whole fucking life.
’’You don’t know yet. Just hold on. We might still find him. These people need your help. They are all injured and a couple of people are dead. I don’t know any of these people but the reaction from beau tells me that he knows and is going to mourn the people that are dead.
’’Where are all the kids?’’ Beau asks a man that seems to be one of the few people that looks okay.
’’There are by the caves. We sent all the kids and omegas to the caves. That was the only place we could think of.’’
My ears spring up at his words. Kids and omegas. Jabi is an omega. He could be safe with all the children.
’’Where is this cave?"
I don’t care about anything and until I find him, I don’t plan on helping anyone. ’’We need you here,’’ I realize Eligio is still holding unto my arm.
’’I need to find him,’’ I shake my head dismissively.
Alanis walks over to me; you have to visualize everything that is happening to understand how I feel right now. These fucking vampires showed up at my baby’s home, they killed people. They injured the rest and I don’t know where he is. How do I fucking go on, knowing that he could be dead?
There is a pain in my chest, one that will not evaporate until he is in my arms. I promised to fucking protect him, to take care of him and I was stupid enough to let him come here on his own. Knowing full well that there were fucking vampires hunting his kind in town. I should’ve kept him in my house, followed him here.
How do I breathe now, knowing this is all my fault?
’’Help us first. We need your healing powers. El and I are going to surf the woods for the people responsible for this. Beau will be here with you.’’
This is the most rational person of our group and right now I am the most irrational one. Like I said before, I am selfish. I don’t mix well with people. I have never cared about impressing people or doing the right thing.
Nothing has changed.
The only thing that has changed is how much I fucking care about that kid. I can’t stand the thought of losing him.
’’I need to know first, make sure he is okay. I need to see him first,’’ I scream so loud that it even surprises me.
I have never been this temperamental and I am a pretty emotional person. Alanis sighs so loudly ’’I will go look for him. I will bring him to you, these people need you more... here.’’
His eyes are sincere ’’I’ll go with Eligio,’’ Bells suggest and we both agree. Because at this point, what choice do we have? There is no arguing with Alanis.
’’I need you here,’’ Beau calls me.
I walk over to him as El and Bell’s go in the opposite direction. The man that told Beau were the kids are leads, Alanis, away from us. My eyes linger on their silhouettes because that is where my heart is.
My heart is stuck in the hopes that Jabi is safe.
I go on my knees and the man on the ground is shaking. There is a large gash on his chest. He is barely conscious. This looks really bad but I don’t say anything.
’’He is not healing fast enough. It takes us a while to heal, he might bleed to death first.’’ He explains.
Werewolves are nothing like vampires. We don’t bleed, well we do bleed but healing is very fast for us. There is no bleeding to death unless our hearts are ripped out of our chests or our heads are cut off.
We don’t die that easy but these creatures get a simple cut and they bleed.
’’I am so sorry about all this,’’ I start to work my magic because this is the only thing I can do at this moment. They need me to be the healer and that is all I am good for. I can’t protect Jabi, so what is my use?
’’This is not your fault,’’ he says. At this point, he is just watching. There is nothing he can do to help me.
A woman walks over to us from a distance but all my attention is on the man I am trying to heal. ’’They came from nowhere.’’ She explains even though no one asked.
’’We need to separate the causalities from the people that are injured. Where are the rest of the healers?’’ he asks the woman.
I turn away from them and slowly, I fee the man slowly move against me. His breath is faint, he is struggling to breathe right now. I am doing all I can. Healing is not as easy as I make it look. I am giving them all my energy; this is going to make me weak after. I will need a lot of blood. They take what they need from me, and I lose what they take.
’’He is the worst of the injured... can you handle him while I get the rest to the infirmary?’’ beau directs at me.
The vampires seem to have done their damage and vanished. This makes the whole recusing of Beau like a failed attempt. I don’t even know if this was his plan all along. He seems very strategic—Cassius. He must’ve planned to come here all along; he was never going to kill Beau first.
’’Go ahead,’’ I urge him as he walks away from me with the woman.
I can feel my energy transport to the needed host. It’s like a beautiful piece of art. My arms above the wound, no one else can see it except me but there is a bright light that feeds off my energy. Takes it where it needs to go.
Slowly his wound starts to heal faster, his breath becomes steadier. I watch the injury disappear and for the first time in my life, I know I am doing good. This is the best thing I can do now, save all these people.
It’s almost like a part of me knows he is safe.
A big part of me knows he will be safe.
’’I’ll find you Jabi.
Chapter 80: The phone call.

Beau.
The moment I walk through those gates, everything feels like a fucking nightmare. I wish this was a nightmare because this is something no one would ever want to experience. Lanis is here but at this moment, no one can make me feel better.
I count the total number of people that are lying dead cold on the ground. They are eight in number. Boris, Conan, Felan, Gorg, Kurt, Lowe, Olcan and Rudi. Olin was the only one still strong enough to speak and talk to me. He is the one that took Lanis to look for Jabi. I haven’t seen Rex. My heart is heavy with worry because if anything happened to him, I will never forgive myself. I am supposed to protect him, he doesn’t have an Alpha by his side. I am supposed to be the one by his side and now this happened and I wasn’t there.
’’How did this happen?’’ I ask Ogma, one of the healers in the pack.
She sighs as we carry one of the injured to a bed gently ’’They had no fear, almost like they just wanted all of us dead.’’
She trembles at her words as she continues ’’They were a lot of them and not too many of us prepared. The alphas did the best they could, we got some of their kind.’’
I saw their bodies. The bodies of those fucking vampires. ’’Where is Fallon?’’ I ask the question that has been on my mind all the while.
’’No one knows, he just up and disappeared. I knew giving him the power to be the new Alpha was a mistake.’’
I don’t say anything because I don’t have the energy. This is all too much for me. all I need to do now is figure out how to kill Cassius. There is no time for dwelling on that motherfucker. He is the least of my priorities. Darrien walks in through the front doors of the infirmaries just as I am about to go out to check on him. he has Brent in his arms. Brent was the one that was seriously injured. I didn’t think he would survive that cut. It was that gruesome and now, Darrien has him in his arms like nothing was wrong.
’’Where do I put him?’’ he asks me.
All the beds are full, there is no space for him but he needs a fucking bed. All these things that keep happening just prove that I am not ready to be the Alpha. I have no inclination of what I am doing. Here I am, after being attacked and losing so many of my brothers. I still have no idea what to do, how to stop all this from happening. I didn’t want to involve the elders, thinking I could handle it all by my own but now I need to.
’’Get a fucking bed from wherever you can,’’ I shout to one of the younger healers, Collin. Collin is a beta. He does most of the errands in the infirmaries. I know this is me being harsh but I am pissed off right now and this is the only way I can vent it all out.
Darrien places Brent on a big couch in one of the rooms and walks back to me ’’I need to go and look for Alanis. He is not back and I need to make sure Jabi is okay.’’
’’I can take you there. You wouldn’t know where it is.’’ I suggest because he has done so much for me.
I glance at his hands and they are shaking. He looks like someone different. Darrien never had fear in his eyes, he was always so sarcastic and nonchalant. Now the worry is evident on his face, his eyes are red and blotchy, he has been crying.
’’Thanks.’’
We walk together to the caves ’’You know Jabi is one of the strongest people I know. Nothing is going to happen to him.’’
He sighs ’’He has no one. No one to fight for him, no one to care if he is missing. Why would this happen to him? it is not fair.’’
I nod ’’He has you now though.’’
’’I can’t stand the thought of losing him,’’ he cries suddenly. His voice etched with so much pain, I reach for him and place my arm on his shoulder comfortingly.
’’We will find him.’’
We get to the caves and I see Alanis as he shuffles all the kids out of the caves. They all look scared, the fear evident in their eyes but they listen to him. they are not scared of him, they are just scared of everything that is happening. Alanis looks up as Darrien runs over to him, his eyes roaming in search of the only person that is important to him. he looks around, desperate to find him but I can already tell he is not here. I can’t find his scent anywhere. Rex’s scent is strong but Jabi’s isn’t here. I walk closer until I see Rex in a corner, he is standing next to another Alpha. He jumps up when he sees me, all I notice are the bruises on his face. His clothes have blood all over him. not his blood, Thank God. He runs into my arms immediately and I realise that he hasn’t seen me since Cassius took m.
’’You’re alive,’’ he cries in my arms.
Rex needs me to survive. Leaving him for those two weeks plus was hard because I worried about him all the while.
’’He is not fucking here,’’ Darrien shouts scaring the children more.
I let go of Rex and walk over to him in an attempt to calm him down. I know how he feels. I know what this means to him and his reaction is warranted. It is understandable.
Jabi is his mate.
He knows it and I know it. We all fucking know it and now he doesn’t know where he is.
That is the most painful to experience.
I know how he feels.
’’Calm down Darrien. You are scaring the kids.’’ Alanis tries to stop him from an outburst. That is a mistake because when you tell someone to calm down, they only get angrier.
He pushes Alanis which catches him by surprise. On reflex I am in front of my mate, ready to kill. My eyes glare at Darrien. If he is going to be a threat, he needs to leave ’’Do we have a problem here?’’
He stands in front of me, fuming. His eyes never waver from me. he is no longer crying. Now he is just pissed off. ’’I need to go and find him.’’ slowly he takes backward steps away from me and before I know it, he is running to the direction of the woods. No one can stop him, there is no point. He will just end up doing what he wants and right now I need to focus on the pack and how to protect everybody.
’’What happened here?’’ I ask Rex.
’’We got here when it all happened. We didn’t witness all the killings. There was one vampire left when we got here. He is the one that took Jabi.’’
’’Why did he take him and leave you?’’ Alanis asks.
Rex shrugs ’’I don’t know. I have no idea why they do the things they did. It was so scary because all Jabi kept saying was how much he wanted to live. He kept crying and there was nothing I could do. there was no way I could fight to protect him.’’ he starts to cry and I pull him into my arms again.
Rex is weak.
That’s the way it has always been. Omegas can’t fight, they can’t defend themselves. They are told that they are weak and most always stay by an Alpha. there is nothing I can do or say to comfort him. if anything happens to Jabi, I know Rex will feel the guilt of it for the rest of his life.
There is only one thing I need to do now.
I need to call him.
The man that will help our pack.
The only person that can make me strong enough to face Cassius and fucking kill him. slowly letting go of Rex, I walk over to Alanis ’’I need your phone,’’ I ask him since I have no idea where mine is. I think I left it in my room that night but I am not even sure. He reaches for his pocket and brings out the black iPhone.
I take the phone from him and walk away from him ’’Help me get everyone into their house safely. I just need to make a quick phone call.’’ I explain to him, this gets a nod from him and makes me all the more grateful to have him here.
I dial his number as I have it at heart and it rings. I hear the click and then his voice on the other end of the line.
’’I need your help.’’
