Nothing To Give But My Heart Chapter 21

She was almost killed in the hospital the other day. The memory of the ice-cold machinery entering her body was still fresh in her mind. Was it him who stopped the doctor at the very last minute? The anesthetic had blurred her memories; she was already at the Ye Family’s house when she woke up.

“Don’t overthink it. I’m just too lazy to deal with women like you,” Ye Moxuan said coldly before getting Xiao Su to wheel him away.

Watching their leaving silhouettes, Shen Qi’s heart was a mess.

How could it be? She thought the child was long gone. Now that Xiao Su mentioned it, she recalled that there weren’t any changes to her stomach when she woke up the other day.

Thinking of that, Shen Qi took her phone and called Han Xueyou.

After Han Xueyou came over, she took Shen Qi to the hospital for a check up. Shen Qi was dumbfounded when the doctor congratulated her for being pregnant.

How could this be? She thought Ye Moxuan would never accept this child. However…

“Looks like Ye Moxuan isn’t as heartless as you thought, huh?”

Shen Qi did not refute. Her eyes were cast downward as she was deep in her own thoughts.

“What are you planning to do next?”

“I don’t know. I’ll see as we progress, I guess.” Shen Qi never had any plans for her future anyway. She’d been living for Lin Jiang ever since she married him. After the divorce and her parents’ wish for her to marry into the Ye Family, her only goal now was to remain in the Ye Family.

“But… Who was the stranger though?” Han Xueyou was curious. “You said you slept with him, right? Wouldn’t he be afraid of getting you pregnant? Why won’t he look for you? Qi, have you ever thought of reaching out to this person?”

Reach out to that stranger? Shen Qi’s eyes darted absentmindedly. “Why would I look for him? I don’t have any impression of him; I have absolutely no idea what he looks like. Moreover, everything was just blurry shadows as it was a dark and rainy day. Most importantly, I’m Ye Moxuan’s wife now. If I look for this man now, the Ye Family will be even more repelled by me.”

“How about this? I’ll get someone to investigate to see if we can get any leads.”

“Thank you, Xueyou.”

“Why are you thanking me? I should be the one thanking you. You risked your life to stand up for me and was even beaten when I was bullied back in school.” Han Xueyou recalled the days when they were still in school. Before she came to the Han Family, she was terribly poor. Shen Qi was the only one who stood up for her when she was bullied in school.

Hence, they became best friends.

Once Shen Qi got back to the Ye Family’s house, she went straight back to her room.

Right as she was about to enter, she found that Ye Moxuan did not go to his company. She closed the door in astonishment but pondered for a moment before heading toward him again.

Ye Moxuan was in his wheelchair, a finance magazine in one hand. Next to him was a rotatable heightened table with a laptop on it.

When Shen Qi walked closer, she realized that he was wearing his wireless earphones while the laptop screen was playing a video.

It seemed like a video conference.

Noticing that, Shen Qi immediately stopped herself from saying anything and stood by his side quietly, listening to him talk.

“Yeah, that’s a good suggestion. Next.”

“Alright, you can proceed with it.”

“Sure.”

Ye Moxuan didn’t speak much. He mostly just uttered his instructions in the form of short answers, keeping his head low and his gaze focused on the magazine. “Send the proposal to my email.”

The meeting finally ended half an hour later.

Shen Qi too, stood by his side until the meeting ended.

Watching the icons on the screen disappear one by one, Shen Qi took a step forward. However, Ye Moxuan stopped her coldly. “Do not come near me.”

“…” Shen Qi stopped.

Ye Moxuan was opening his email and checking messages.

Okay, it seems like he has a lot of work left to do.

Shen Qi decided against bothering him and prepared to leave.

“Stand there.”

Shen Qi turned around and stared at him with confusion.

“Wait here,” Ye Moxuan ordered.

Shen Qi’s eyes widened. He didn’t want her to come close to him but didn’t want her to leave, insisting on making her stand right here?

Is he out of his mind?

However, Shen Qi did not move and continued standing there because she knew that she had wronged him. She felt guilty for grabbing his collar and accusing him of being a heartless monster and that even animals had more feelings than him the other night.

Shen Qi didn’t know how long she had been standing there; she only knew that Ye Moxuan was very focused and serious as he worked.

Suddenly, she felt that men who were serious while working looked really hot.

After a while, Shen Qi could feel her legs starting to ache. However, it seemed like Ye Moxuan was far from finished with his work.

Is this his revenge? Is he doing it on purpose because of what I said to him?

Shen Qi frowned as she continued thinking, bending down to massage her aching feet.

Finally, Ye Moxuan glanced at her.

Shen Qi immediately stood up straight like a child who had been caught red handed.

“What, you can’t even stand for an hour?” Ye Moxuan lifted his hand and glanced at his watch before mocking.

Shen Qi moved her lips a bit but did not say anything.

“Why did you want to see me?”

Shen Qi remained silent. Ye Moxuan then snorted and slammed his laptop shut, preparing to leave. Anxious that he would leave right then, Shen Qi blurted, “I’m sorry!”

Ye Moxuan narrowed his eyes and glanced at her from the corner of his eye.

“I apologize for what happened two days ago!” Shen Qi said solemnly before bowing at Ye Moxuan.

When she straightened, she was met with Ye Moxuan’s cold gaze.

“I thought…”

“You thought?” Ye Moxuan mocked snarkily, “You don’t really think that I spared that b*stard because I have feelings for you right?”

“I—” Shen Qi just wanted to apologize. She didn’t not expect Ye Moxuan to mock her like this as her face turned a few shades paler.

“I advise you to forget about it,” Ye Moxuan said and threw a brown envelope in her direction. “Contract, sign it.”

Right as Shen Qi reached for the envelope, it fell right next to her feet. She was stunned for a moment before she bent down and took the envelope.

When she opened the envelope, she found a post-wedding disclaimer.

“Sign it!” Ye Moxuan’s voice was void of emotion. She glanced at him only to be met with his dark eyes as she immediately scanned through the document.

“You and your sister are both burdens. I’ll only give you 6 months. After 6 months, I want you to leave the Ye Family along with this contract and the check. I don’t want you to ever come back to this place,” Ye Moxuan announced as he set a check on the table.

Shen Qi felt as if someone had poured a bucket of cold water onto her when she saw the check.

She’d wanted to apologize as a way to reject it initially. However, she’d never thought that he had already prepared the contract as well as the check.

“I’m sure the amount of money will be enough to satisfy your pride, huh?”

Shen Qi’s grip on the contract tightened, her fingertips turning white as she took a pen and signed her name at the bottom of the contract before putting it back into the envelope and walked toward him.

Ye Moxuan’s eyebrows raised with satisfaction. “It is the easiest to deal with gold diggers like you.”

The next minute, Shen Qi slammed the contract onto the table. Ye Moxuan frowned in displeasure.

“Do not think that you can buy me off with money! My only intention was to get what I needed in the Ye Family in the first place! I’m grateful that you did not force me to abort this child but this doesn’t mean that you can humiliate me with money!”

“Pfft!” Mo Yexuan snorted, his eyes taunting. “I thought women like you view money as their lifeline?”

“You!” Shen Qi clenched her fists; she wanted to quarrel with him so badly. However, she unclenched her fists after a while and chuckled lightly. “Well, since that’s how you see me, then so be it. After all, we are just benefitting off each other anyway. I’ve signed the contract so don’t worry I will leave when it’s time for me to do so.”

She must find a way to solve her problem before the contract ended.

“Good, I’ll be anticipating the day you leave.”

Shen Qi immediately took her leave, ignoring the check on the table.

Ye Moxuan narrowed his eyes.

The amount of money on the check wasn’t small, so how could she not spare any second glances at all? Was it an act or… was she really not interested in money?

If she wasn’t interested in money, what was the real reason for her to marry into the Ye Family then?

After signing the contract, Shen Qi and Ye Moxuan tried to get along, staying together as per the contract. This had reduced the amount of bickering they used to have and she still worked at Ye Moxuan’s company as an assistant under Old Master Ye’s orders.

Shen Qi wasn’t stupid and was capable of handling her job. She’d never waste an opportunity for her to learn.

Xiao Su changed his impression toward the girl in less than a week.

“Young Master Ye, she’s actually good at this!”

Ye Moxuan chuckled coldly. “Are you sure?”

Xiao Su nodded. “She did all the work that you gave her well.”

Indeed, her work was neat and concise.

“How could someone who pulled strings to get into the Ye Family be dumb?”

Xiao Su choked at his answer. He did not say anything else and went to check his schedule instead. “There’s a banquet tonight; are you going to bring Miss Shen?”

“Bring her?” Ye Moxuan tapped rhythmically on the table, his eyes not leaving his laptop. “Do I want to bring her to humiliate myself?”

Xiao Su immediately shut up, not daring to say anything else.

After a bit more small talk, Xiao Su prepared to leave as well.

Suddenly, Ye Moxuan spoke up. “Get Shen Qi to come to my office.”

“Alright.” Xiao Su couldn’t help but pout as he left the office.

Why does Young Master Ye keep contradicting himself? He was just talking about how she was embarrassing but now he wants me to call her into his office? Is he going to bring her to the banquet?

Shen Qi’s office was just right next to them. She was still handling some documents when Xiao Su went to get her.

“Give me two minutes, I’ll be right over.”

“Are you courting death?” Xiao Su chided. “How dare you make Young Master Ye wait for you?!”

Shen Qi could only frown and put her documents down as she took a deep breath. “I’ll go now.”

Then, she got up and headed to Mo Yexuan’s office.

Right after Shen Qi entered his office, Xiao Su went to hide behind the doors to eavesdrop.

“Are you looking for me, Young Master Ye?” Ye Moxuan had allowed her to work in the company with the condition that no one else must know about their relationship. In the company, she would only be his assistant; that was all it was to it. She must address him as Young Master Ye in the company just like everyone else.

Shen Qi felt that it was strange initially. However, after addressing him as Young Master Ye for quite some time, she’d gotten used to it as well.

Ye Moxuan said nothing, instead throwing a golden envelope in her direction.

Shen Qi was taken aback before taking the envelope and scanning through its contents. Then, she asked, “Are you going to the banquet?” The gears in Shen Qi’s brain started churning as something different shone in her eyes. “I remember that Lu Group is on the invitation list. If I’m not mistaken, they will be attending this banquet as well. Young Master Ye, you can take this opportunity to show your interest in working with them.”

Faint admiration shone in Ye Moxuan’s eyes.

Hmm, seems like this woman really has a good memory and reacts fast!

“Alright.”

“I’ll go prepare the documents for you, Young Master Ye.”

“You’re going with me.”

Shen Qi was preparing to leave when she heard what Ye Moxuan said. Stopping in her tracks, she turned around and stared at him with confusion. “You’re asking for me to go with you, Young Master Ye?”

“I do not have the interest to talk about business during a banquet. You should do it for me instead.”

Shen Qi finally understood what he meant as she nodded. “I understand. I’ll introduce myself to President Lu later then. I’ll be going if you don’t need my assistance anymore.”

“There’s something else.” Ye Moxuan scanned her coldly as he sized her up from top to the bottom, making her feel uncomfortable as she squeezed her legs together subconsciously.

“Change your outfit.” Mo Yexuan frowned and said disdainfully.

Shen Qi lowered her head and glanced at her outfit. These were her old clothes that she had gotten for a dirt cheap price.

However, they were comfy. Ye Moxuan never really said anything about it so she’d always worn them anyway.

She bit her lip. “Understood. I’ll get a new outfit at the nearby mall after work.”

“Xiao Su!”

Xiao Su ,who was eavesdropping behind the door, shuddered in fear.

What? How did I get caught again?

After getting caught eavesdropping twice, Xiao Su vowed to never eavesdrop again.

Not daring to dawdle, Xiao Su immediately made his way into the office.

“Young Master Ye.”

Ye Moxuan gave him a cold stare. Xiao Su immediately caught on, trying to figure out what he was trying to say before asking hesitantly, “Young Master Ye, should I bring Miss Shen to buy a gown for tonight’s banquet?”

“Sure.”

So my guess was right. Xiao Su sighed in relief. “Give me a moment to prepare.”

Half an hour later, all three of them showed up at the mall.

Shen Qi lagged behind Ye Moxuan and Xiao Su as they made their way into a haute couture. The interior was decorated extravagantly as calming music played softly in the background.

Although Ye Moxuan was in a wheelchair, it was obvious that what he wore was expensive. Moreover, he had a strong presence. In no time, the sales clerk came over to greet them with a warm smile.

“Welcome to our shop, sir!”

Ye Moxuan’s gaze was cold as he didn’t even bother sparing the clerk any glances. However, Xiao Su, who was behind him, spoke up instead. “I want you to get her an outfit suitable for a banquet.”

Shen Qi was slightly afraid as she hid behind Xiao Su.

It was her first time coming into a store like this. The glimmering lights of the chandeliers made her feel as if she couldn’t even lift her head. Although she used to shop at places like this back then with her best friends, those days were long forgotten after she got married to Lin Jiang.

The sales clerk’s smile immediately faltered when she saw Shen Qi’s outfit.

“For this lady?”

“Yes!” Xiao Su nodded before adding seriously, “Choose well. Do not make any mistakes.”

“Y-Yes. Please follow me, miss.”

The clerk took Shen Qi to the fitting room.

After a while, Shen Qi came out in a black and white gown. Since she was brought here by Mo Yexuan, the clerk brought her out to get his opinion.

Ye Moxuan’s gaze was steely. “Change it!”

Shen Qi’s expression faltered but she went back in to change into another outfit.

The gown this time was pure black. Ye Moxuan frowned.

Shen Qi’s grip on the dress tightened as she quietly went back to the fitting room to change into another outfit.

However, Ye Moxuan’s frown only deepened as he saw more outfits. The entire shop’s temperature seemingly dropped from the cold aura that he was radiating.

When the clerk led Shen Qi out again, Ye Moxuan slammed the magazine that he was reading onto the table.

Shen Qi jumped and bit her lips subconsciously.

“Let’s just… Not try anymore… I…”

Ye Moxuan’s disdainful gaze made her feel as if she couldn’t even lift her head. Shen Qi knew that she wasn’t charismatic so dresses like these weren’t suitable for her. She probably couldn’t even make them look good.

These expensive gowns on her body was just a big joke.

However, what Ye Moxuan said surprised her. “Stop picking these old-fashioned dresses for her, won’t you? She’s thirty, not fifty.”

After finishing, Ye Moxuan’s sharp gaze fell on the clerk.

Immediately, the clerk felt the pressure on her increase as her face turned a few shades paler and she nodded mechanically. “I understand.”

She could feel the warning from the man—if she didn’t pick a nice outfit this time, she might just get fired. Although she couldn’t see anything from the man’s eyes, she could feel that he was very powerful.

Immediately, she went to get the best dress in their shop and took Shen Qi to the fitting room.

“This gown is a very expensive and precious piece. Let me put it on you.”

“It’s fine. I can wear it on my own.”

Shen Qi wasn’t used to someone watching her undress.

The clerked immediately complained, “What’s wrong with you? If you won’t let me help you with this precious piece, can you afford paying for this gown if you spoil it?

“I—”

“What?! Look at what you were wearing previously! How dare you try on our clothes when all you wear are cheap rags! Do you think you’re so amazing just because someone is backing you?” The clerk noticed that Shen Qi was a pushover and she didn’t dare to offend Ye Moxuan so she took the chance to mock her instead.

Shen Qi didn’t say anything. She was embarrassed that the clerk had exposed her like this.

“Alright, try it on yourself. I don’t want you to go around complaining about me.” The sales clerk threw the dress at her before slamming the fitting room door shut.

Shen Qi held onto the dress and blanked out. After a moment, she finally started changing into it.

The dress was indeed precious, just like what the clerk had said. This one was different from the other old-fashioned ones.

After Shen Qi finished changing, she lifted the hemline of the gown and stepped out. However, the place where Ye Moxuan once sat was empty now. No one was there.

Shen Qi felt her heart drop. Where did they go?

Right when she wanted to go look for them, she suddenly heard familiar voices.

“Darling, do you think this looks good on me?”

“What are you even talking about? Of course my baby will look good in everything!”

Shen Qi paused before she started heading in another direction, as if in a trance. Although her figure was blocked by the large clothing racks, she could still spot the two figures in front of her clearly.

It was Lin Jiang and his pregnant mistress!

The two of them stood together intimately. The woman’s belly was huge by now; it was clear that she couldn’t fit into the dress that she was holding.

“It’s too bad that I can’t wear this now.”

“It’s okay. We can buy it first if you really like it. You can wear it after the baby is born!”

“Thank you, darling! You’re the best!”

Shen Qi clenched her fists. Lin Jiang had never talked to her like this ever in their marriage. She did not expect to run into them here today.

Suddenly, the mistress looked over at her direction. Shen Qi jumped and took a step back subconsciously.

While she turned, she accidentally bumped into the sales clerk that was looking for her and the clerk instinctively grabbed onto Shen Qi’s gown.

Riiip! The gown was torn apart.

This attracted the attention of almost everyone in the shop, including Lin Jiang and his mistress.

The clerk panicked when she found that the dress had ripped when she fell. Getting up immediately, she accused Shen Qi, “Do you know how much this gown costs? How could you damage it on purpose?!”

Shen Qi was taken aback. She just didn’t want those two to find out that she was here as well, not expecting to bump into anyone.

Looking down at her outfit after the clerk’s accusation, she suddenly realized that the accessories embroidered on the gown had fallen out, her shoulder completely exposed.

Noticing that the other patrons were crowding around them, Shen Qi immediately grabbed her shoulder with her hand and apologized anxiously, “I’m so sorry! It was an accident!”

The clerk chuckled coldly. “You’re sorry? This gown is the best in our shop! It was only flown from Italy yesterday and costs around 300,000! Do you think your apology can solve the problem right now? Can you repair the dress to its original form?”

Shen Qi bit her lips as she promised timidly, “I’ll fix it for you, I swear!”

“Fix it? How can you fix it?” The clerk’s accusation became louder and louder as more people started gathering around them.

Shen Qi felt utterly embarrassed and humiliated from the pointed looks and criticism from everyone around her. She was starting to feel dizzy.

“Hey, isn’t that Shen Qi?” Lin Jiang’s mistress saw Shen Qi’s messy look and laughed before mocking, “How could a woman who only wears cheap clothes come into a designer store like this? And to ruin one of their gowns? Shen Qi, are you here to destroy their reputation?”

The clerk, who was standing next to them, widened her eyes. “What do you mean?! Are you here to make a mess on purpose? This dress costs more than 300,000! You better pay up now!”

The mistress let out a crisp laugh. “How can she even afford that dress? Her salary was 3000 at most per month. Now that she lost her job, she probably can’t even afford the cheap ones.”

Shen Qi bit her lip harder after hearing her.

Lin Jiang must have told her everything for the mistress to know her so well.

“Hey Shen Qi, why don’t you beg Lin Jiang if you can’t afford it? He might even help you seeing that you guys were close back then.”

At that, Shen Qi’s hand trembled as she glanced at Lin Jiang subconsciously.

When their eyes met, Lin Jiang was clearly taken aback. Uneasiness shone past his eyes.

“Lin Jiang, will you help her?”

Lin Jiang looked at the beautiful Shi Qinbao next to him as he coughed a little and held her tighter to him.”Why would I help any woman other than you, baby? Especially not when that woman came just to ruin the store’s reputation!”

What Lin Jiang said were like knives to her heart.

Shen Qi’s lips started bleeding from biting too hard on them.

“Come on, darling! Although she asked for it by doing this here, she’s so pitiful right now. This dress cost around 300,000! If she can’t afford it, will she be detained here?”

This immediately reminded the clerk as she took her phone out. “I’ll make a police report right now!”

Shen Qi looked up. A police report?

“This woman is so vain! Going into shops and trying out clothes, ruining them just because she can’t afford them! You must make a police report!” the bystanders chimed in as well.

“Exactly! Look at her! Her hair is such a mess! Why would you let someone like this enter the shop?”

“I can’t believe women nowadays, overestimating themselves, thinking that they’re high-class just because they can come in to try on clothes? Pssh! Now that the gown is ruined, you can’t afford it, can you? This is hilarious! The police must give this woman a lesson so that she won’t ever repeat the same mistake again!”

Mocking laughter and disdainful glares all over made Shen Qi burn with shame.

Ye Moxuan, Ye Moxuan, where did you go? Why did you leave me alone? Are you really that ashamed of me?

Shen Qi felt terrible, her eyes starting to redden.

She lifted her head slightly and watched as everyone surrounding her pointed fingers at her, the remarks and mocking stares they gave her making her feel so little. Her entire body trembled, the dread within her making her feel dizzy.

Shen Qi had a bad habit of feeling lightheaded every time she became too anxious or helpless.

Slowly, black dots started appearing in her vision as everyone’s faces turned blurry.

The darkness was swallowing her whole.

Right as Shen Qi was about to give in, her body tilting sideways, a hand swooped in and grabbed onto her…

The pair of hands were gentle but strong, steadying Shen Qi’s falling body.

Their surroundings seemed to quiet down. Shen Qi’s face was ghastly although she regained some of her consciousness.

A strong pair of legs came into her view as Shen Qi tried to look up to see who was holding her.

The man’s gaze was deep, his eyebrows sharp and sardonically arched. His jaw clenched as he pursed his lips. The aura that he gave off was cold. Although he was on a wheelchair, his strong presence could still be felt by everyone.

Everyone took a few steps back from his presence and stared curiously at this man who appeared out of nowhere.

Who is he?!

Shen Qi didn’t have any energy left as she stared awkwardly at Ye Moxuan who was still holding her.

“You… You didn’t leave?”

She thought that he had left because she was too ugly in the gowns. Who knew that he was actually still here?

“You’re still not getting up?” Ye Moxuan stared at her closely before lowering his voice and asked.

Immediately, Shen Qi snapped back from her daze, wanting to use him as a support to get back on her feet. However, when she wanted to stand up she noticed that there was a big tear in the dress. If she stood up, the dress would completely fall off her due to its heavy hems.

“No, I can’t.”

Ye Moxuan frowned and stared at her in displeasure.

Shen Qi bit her lips before shuttering, “M-My d-dress will fall if I stand up. My body will be exposed.”

Ye Moxuan narrowed his eyes as he looked at her.

Shen Qi really felt useless at the moment. Why was she so embarrassing? Would Ye Moxuan ditch her and leave?

While she was panicking, she felt a blazer covering her body and her eyes immediately shot up in fear. Her bewildered expression was immediately caught by Ye Moxuan.

“You…”

“Are you still not getting up?”

Shen Qi could only wrap herself with the blazer before grabbing onto Ye Moxuan’s hand as support to stand up.

His hand was wide and warm. His warmth traveled through his hand and lingered on Shen Qi’s body, making its way into her heart. When Ye Moxuan retracted his hand, Shen Qi suddenly felt empty.

The strong smell of men’s cologne enveloped her, causing Shen Qi, who was initially anxious, to feel as if she had someone to lean on.

For the first time after so many years, she finally felt protected.

“Who pushed her?”

Ye Moxuan’s voice was as cold as an icy mountain stream.

The clerk’s eyes widened when she saw how the situation had turned after making the call. She was initially respectful toward Shen Qi because the man in the wheelchair looked like he wasn’t someone she should offend. However, she checked and saw that the man had left. He probably thought that she was done for and left her.

However, he came back again. What was happening?

The clerk recalled what had happened, not daring to utter anything.

“I’m asking again—who pushed her?”

This time, Ye Moxuan’s tone held a powerful force, shocking the crowd.

How could a man in a wheelchair have so much authority? They shuddered at the thought of it.

The onlookers who accused Shen Qi just now immediately jumped to accuse the clerk, trying to justify themselves. “We are not related to this! It was the clerk who accused her so we came to see what happened!”

“Exactly! The clerk accused this lady for ruining the gown and had made a police report just now.”

The sales clerk, who had been all high-and-mighty just now, visibly deflated, not even daring to utter anything until the others pushed her forward. She waved her hands anxiously, trying to deny it. “It wasn’t like that, sir. This lady fell on her own and tore the dress in the process. I wasn’t involved in it!”

Shen Qi’s eyes were cast downward. Indeed, she was the one who tore the dress. The blame was on her.

“Is that so?” Ye Moxuan chuckled mockingly as he raised his voice. “Did she really tear the dress?”

The clerk was so frightened by his sense of authority her lips trembled a bit before clamping shut.

Shi Qinbao was displeased watching the situation turn against her. Why did it become like this? Who was the man in the wheelchair? What was that crippled man even trying to do?
