“Declaration for Luna Tahlia per the deal of the duel. She has been framed for the death of her husband and her son, Young Black, belongs to the Alpha. Therefore, she is reinstated as Luna, as her son will be the next Alpha of Blackbridge Pack.”

The verdict was read aloud before Olga slumped forward. It was as though she had been holding on just to hear those words.

We quickly rushed her into the carriage and headed home. Now, as I stood in the living room, waiting for Mearez’s words, I couldn’t help but pace.

Is Olga going to die? Is she…?

I suddenly paused and turned slowly toward Lycannar. He had followed us quietly, silently, with Hades at his side, standing at the window without moving. If he had looked into Olga’s eyes, he must have seen her death.

I walked toward him to question him, but Mearez entered the living room and sighed shakily.

I searched her face for answers, but then the piercing cry of Luna Tahlia rang out from the bedchamber, and my heart sank. Is she… dead?

My gaze fell slowly to the blood on my hands. When I looked up again, Mearez’s eyes were wet.

“Come here,” Lycannar said gently, and Mearez rushed into his arms. He rubbed her back slowly.

“She died a natural death,” he said quietly. “It was her time. She’s gone to rest.”

I exhaled a shaky breath. He had known, seen it, and kept it to himself.

Walking to Young Black, who was already asleep in Blue’s arms, I glanced at Dessyn and Moon sitting silently in the corner, their heads bowed in grief. I had no words until the sound of approaching footsteps filled the room.

Luna Tahlia appeared, and I rushed to her.

“She died,” she murmured helplessly, and I held her. “She died.”

Her voice broke with grief, but as I held her, an idea began to rise in my chest.

I stepped toward Lycannar. Mearez moved aside, sensing my intent.

“Lycannar,” I said quietly. “I want you to look into Luna Tahlia’s eyes and tell me when she will die.”

At my request, Serena, who had been standing in the corner, rushed forward but Lycannar lifted a hand to silence her.

“Zephyrine, he…” Mearez began, but Lycannar cut her off with one look.

He met my gaze, then spoke with a calm finality.

“Before sunrise, she will be burned alive.”

A cold shiver ran down my spine, and my knees almost gave way.

“By who?”

“By those who want to take the position from her son.”

I clenched my jaw.

“Lycannar, what if…”

“That’s enough,” Serena snapped, stepping between us. “He can’t use his curse like this.”

I blinked at the sharpness in her tone, then glanced at Mearez, who looked equally hesitant as if they were hiding something.

“Serena, I am fine,” Lycannar said, gently moving her aside before opening his mouth to answer me again.

But I didn’t want to hear more.

He had done enough.

“You can leave, Lycannar. You’ve helped more than enough. Thank you.”

For a long moment, he stared at me silently, swallowing hard. Then, without a word or even a kiss, he left, his family following him.

The hole he left in my chest was heavy, but there was no time to dwell on it. I had to move before sunrise. And to do that… I had to be an Ashmere.

“Luna Tahlia,” I said urgently, turning to her, “listen to me. You must be strong. Bring me writing materials. I need to send a letter immediately.”

Though surprised by the urgency in my voice, she had overheard my hushed conversation with Lycannar and didn’t question me. She hurried away and returned quickly.

I sat at the table and wrote a swift, coded order to the Beta of my pack. If there was any fortress untouchable to our enemies, It is Ash Pack. A place where warriors were born and bred.

Handing the letter to Moon, I met his eyes. He asked no questions, only mounted up and galloped away in my carriage.

We waited. No one slept. No one moved.

When the first sliver of sunlight began to break the horizon, the sound of approaching hooves reached our

cars.

Jurrek burst in with Moon at his side, and Luna Tahlia rose immediately, bowing in awe and trembling.

“Why… why is the Beta of the most respected pack here?” she asked.

I turned to Blue, meeting her eyes in silent warning. If she wanted my trust, she would keep what I was about to reveal a secret.

Standing before Luna Tahlia, I said calmly,

“I am Zephyrine Ashmere. The last true–blooded female Ashmere alive.”

The color drained from her face. She fell to her knees, but I caught her before she could bow fully.

“We have no time. You must hurry.”

“You… you are a female Alpha?” she whispered.

“Not yet. My brother holds the title. But right now, that doesn’t matter. Listen to me. If you want to live, and if you want your son to live long enough to claim what is his, you must flee immediately. Not to another pack, but to Ash Pack. There, no harm will touch you.

–“And while you hide, your death will be staged. This house will burn tonight, with you, your son, and your

mother inside. They will believe they’ve won, but they’ll be wrong. One day, you will return and Young Black will reclaim what is his.”

Rumors from those who attended the celebration said Kaela wept for the death of Young Black, who was meant to inherit the title.

The deaths of Luna Tahlia and her son were officially announced. Their home had been burned to the ground, and the ashes of their werewolf forms were gathered for the funeral rites.

The pack mourned the loss of their rightful leaders, yet celebrated the rise of the new ones.

No word came from Hue Pack. No word came from the Lycan Kingdom.

And though part of me longed for Lycannar, I stayed in bed at the White Pack.

“My lady? My lady?” A knock came with Blue’s gentle voice behind it.

“The door’s not locked,” I called.

She stepped in, a faint frown on her face, and approached the bed. Her sigh was shaky.

“My lady, don’t you think you should visit Princess Mearez so she can check on you?”

I looked away, steadying my breath. I’d been sick since that night. The healers had already been by, I’d rested, taken the potions they provided but I never felt any better.

The last thing I wanted was to step into Lycannar’s kingdom just yet.

Blue’s worried gaze lingered on me, and I almost smiled. It is strange comfort having a Lycan by my side when their king seemed to neglect me

Still… that night, Lycannar had done the best part. If not for his curse, I would have thought Luna Tahlia will be safe and left her unprotected.

But still Lycannar seem to have hidden something. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Even his sister Mearez who is always quick to help had withdrawn. Which meant there is a reason. A heavy one.

I was lost in thought until I heard the sound of horses stopping outside. I paused, listening, expecting the familiar warmth but nothing followed. My frown deepened.

“Check who it is.”

Blue went to the window and peered out. I watched her expression shift before she turned to me.

“It’s the Alpha from Hue Pack.”

Nyroth.

Why is he here?

From what I have heard he had attended the ascension of Alpja Yadev.

I almost rolled my eyes in exhaustion. I had no time for his games and no desire to see him after what he’d done. He’d helped Kaela forge the false evidence that doomed Luna Tahlia.

The knock came again, followed by the sound of the front door opening and closing. Moments later, The bedchamber door I shared with my best friend swung open. Dessyn stood there, her lip curling in disgust.

“Your ex is at the door.”

If only he truly is my ex.

Forcing myself to push past my weakness, I stepped toward the exit, Blue close behind.

I opened the main door to find Nyroth standing there with a chest in his hands. My brow arched, but I stepped forward, waiting for him to speak.

“Zeph… how have you been?”

I stared, hearing something unfamiliar in his tone. What was he playing at?

“What do you want, Nyroth?”

He swallowed, eyes fixed on me, then opened the chest. Inside, he took out a hairpin I instantly recognized.

My heart lurched.

“Where… where did you find this?”

“Many years ago at a festival,” he began, and I snapped my gaze to him. “Rogues attacked. I was caught in the fire… and…” Content originally comes from

“And I saved a boy,” I murmured, realization dawning.

“When you shifted into your wolf, the hairpin fell,” he said quietly. “I didn’t know it was broken until I picked it up. That night… that boy you saved was me, Zeph.”

My knees weakened.

“Our bond… it wasn’t coincidence. After the white wolf fled, I passed out. When I woke, it was Kaela I saw… and I thought it was her who had saved me. I loved her ever since. But it was you. At the arena last week, when you fought, even without shifting, I knew. It was you I loved. It’s always been you.”

A cold shiver ran down my spine.

“Zeph…” His voice softened as he caught my hand, holding it with a tenderness I’d never seen from him. “Forget the past, the cheats, the insults, the pain. I want you back. I’ll announce to the whole empire you are my mate. If my mother or sister speak against you, they’ll pay tenfold. I love you, Zeph. I’m sorry it took me this long to see it.”

A proposal in broad daylight fron my fated mate. My heart stilled.

And then… I suddenly felt it.

The presence I knew without seeing. Lycannar Blood.

He stood at the far end of the path, dressed in black as always, hair tied back, hands at his sides.

But his eyes… they went first to Nyroth’s hand holding mine.

When they found my gaze, a shudder went through me. I had never seen Lycannar jealous, never truly angry with me.

But now… oh no. I had just opened a very dangerous door.

Back Where 63

The time seemed to stop. Everything halted when those eyes locked onto mine. I was the woman who had never been afraid, who never allowed guilt to touch her but in that moment, something shifted.

It was as though I had betrayed him in the worst way, and my heart shattered. Sharply, I pulled my hand away from Nyroth and swallowed hard.

What was I even thinking? For a fleeting second, the mate bond had clouded my judgment.

I breathed, turning to see Lycannar still standing there. I had thought he’d leave, that he might turn and walk away but today, he didn’t.

“Lycan…” I started, but he silenced me with a tender kiss. I tasted him again after a week of longing.

Gently, his hand came to my waist, the other cupping my cheek as he kissed me softly.

After a few seconds, he pulled back and stared into my eyes. Slowly, I lowered my gaze. I had feared neglect, but it seemed he hadn’t forgotten me.

Lycannar’s hand moved to mine, the same one Nyroth had held, and he caressed it tenderly, never breaking

eye contact.

“You let him touch what’s mine.” His voice was soft, yet threaded with a warning that made me lift my eyes to meet his. Pale–gold, his eyes shimmered with danger.

I was about to respond when I noticed his face was paler than usual, as if he had been ill and only recently recovered.

“Lycan…”

“Just because you smashed her doesn’t mean she’s yours.” Nyroth’s voice cut in before I could ask Lycannar about his pallor.

“She is my mate. I suppose she didn’t tell you that,” Nyroth added, smug.

I froze. Lycannar’s eyes remained locked on mine, ignoring Nyroth’s words entirely.

“Smash?” he repeated, a faint frown crossing his features. The same innocent surprise I remembered. “That’s the word your mate uses, Zephyrine? Smash?”

Heat flushed my cheeks. Nyroth had never shown me respect. I lowered my gaze.

“Let’s go inside, Lycan.”

“You can’t go anywhere with him, Zeph. We are still having a conversation.” Nyroth’s voice returned, and I almost shot him a glare. He clearly had no idea how dangerous Lycannar truly is or what he is capable of.

“And yet you don’t want me to remove him?” Lycannar asked softly. My throat tightened. He rarely spoke directly to anyone else. Perhaps that was part of the curse he carried.

“Lycannar…” I tried, but he had already released his hold on me.

“I should go,” he said, exhaustion threading his tone, and turned toward the exit.

That was when I felt it. Weakness. Something unspoken but undeniable. I watched him take a step, about to leave, when I screamed.

“Lycan!”

He didn’t stop, despite my voice loud enough.

“You should let him go, Zeph. I am here for you/I will make up for everything I have done and…” Nyroth reached for my hand again, but I flung it off angrily.

“Don’t touch me.” I pivoted, rushing toward Lycannar, blocking his path. My jaw set as he halted. I could feel the audience, but I didn’t care.

“You cannot walk away from me, Lycan,” I said curtly. He nodded but remained silent.

Frustration coiled inside me. His pale–gold eyes, now shifting toward grey, said more than words ever could. I felt desperation spike.

“I’m not letting you go, Lycannar. You will stay.”

He went silent, eyebrows furrowed in confusion. When he spoke, his voice was soft.

“I’m not walking away. I just have to return to my tower.”

“Lycan…” I reached for him, noticing the pallor again. “You’re pale.”

“I’m fine. Don’t touch me.” His voice sharpened, and he stared at me with an almost angry intensity. “Consider that mate of yours lucky this time.”

Bypassing me, he headed out, mounting his horse. A cold chill ran down my spine. Don’t touch me. The words sank deeper than any rejection could, sending goosebumps across my skin.

For days I had been unwell, but the weight of his rejection intensified the pain. My knees wobbled, dizziness blurred my vision but still, I ran after him

He was about to mount when I called, voice cracking,

“Lycan…” I called, but he didn’t pause. Instead, he moved to mount, and my knees gave way. I collapsed to the floor, my head bowed.

What… what is happening? I wondered, panic rising as a trickle of blood dripped from my nostrils. Oh… oh

no.

My eyes rolled back, and I felt myself falling flat, but Lycannar was quicker. He caught me effortlessly, kneeling beside me. His touch, his presence, and the sound of his voice that came next felt like a warm dream on a cold night.

“Zephyrine?” he called softly, and I leaned against his chest, resting for the first time in what felt like forever. Nᴇw ɴovel chaptᴇrs are published

I have fallen. Something a warrior, retired or not, should never do. I feel so… so weak, as though my wolf is struggling for her life.

Lying in bed, I stared at his broad back. Lycannar stood by the window, arms folded across his chest, gazing out. He hadn’t spoken since he helped me onto the bed.

Nyroth lingered as well, worry etched deep into his face, though I couldn’t bring myself to care about him right now. ɪꜰ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs, ᴘʟᴇᴀsᴇ ᴠɪsɪᴛ Find[ɴ]ovel.net

I blinked softly as the sound of a carriage stopping reached my ears. Seconds later, the bedroom door opened and Princess Mearez stepped inside, her expression etched with concern. Somehow, seeing her put me at ease. I had witnessed her skills before, and I trusted her.

“My gods… Zephyrine,” she breathed, rushing to my side and taking my hand. “I came as soon as my brother summoned me. How are you feeling?”

I couldn’t speak. I couldn’t move. The illness had started after the duel, and I had underestimated it.

Who would have thought it could grow so severe?

Princess Mearez went to work immediately. She held my hand gently, closed her eyes for a brief moment, then studied my wrist. Her brows furrowed sharply.

“I need my medical kit,” she said quietly. Blue, standing nearby, nodded.

“I will fetch it from the carriage, My Princess.”

She returned swiftly, carrying a small satchel that held an assortment of delicate tools and needles. She carefully selected the tiniest one and sighed.

“It will sting, Zephyrine. Do you want my brother to stay?” she asked softly. My gaze instinctively shifted to Lycannar. He was still staring out the window, as though he couldn’t bear to see me like this.

“I’m fine,” I murmured. A needle’s sting could not harm me more than the sword that had pierced me and failed to kill.

Princess Mearez pricked my wrist expertly. Blood trickled out, and she froze, staring at it for a heartbeat too long. Then her eyes went wide with alarm.

“You’re poisoned,” she announced, glancing at Lycannar. “And… it’s contagious.”

A cold wave ran through me. Poisoned? Contagious?

“Everyone should leave the bedchamber,” Princess Mearez ordered but no one moved, not even Nyroth, whose concern only deepened.

“How is she poisoned?” Nyroth asked cautiously, but before Princess Mearez could answer, Lycannar finally turned. His pale–gold eyes locked on my face, jaw set tight.

“Cure her,” he said simply.

His sister obeyed immediately, taking my hand once more. For a fleeting moment, her warmth seeped into me, then she pulled back, eyes wide in horror.

She pricked my wrist again. Blood flowed freely, then healed under her careful touch. Slowly, she lowered the needle and looked at me gravely.

“How long have you felt unwell? You must have noticed something earlier,” she asked.

I could not respond. My heart raced with fear.

Poison? But who would dare? I cannot die, not yet. The Ashmere legacy rests on my shoulders.

“Immediately after the duel,” Dessyn replied, and Blue nodded in agreement.

“I told my lady to come to you, Princess Mearez, but she refused. Will she be okay?”

“There is a cure,” Mearez began in a low voice, “but it requires a rare flower… located at the Empire’s End

Grove.”

Cold dread settled over me. The Empire’s Grove. A place of no return. Whoever poisoned me knew where the cure is and made certain I would not reach it.

“Let’s go have a conversation everyone, in the living room.” Princess Mearez says and then walk out but no one follows immediately.

“Zeph?” Nyroth’s voice came hesitantly at last as he approached.

“Go away,” I muttered. “I don’t want to infect you.”

His frown deepened, and he retreated.

Everyone follow through, leaving Lycannar alone at the window. I watched him, unblinking, as silence settled.

Finally, he moved from the window and approached the bed. His hand reached for my arm, aiming to help me lie down, but I pushed him away.

“Let me go,” I muttered harshly.

He tried again, but I wriggled free.

“Don’t touch me!” I snapped.

“Stay still,” he said softly. My struggle only grew, and then he snapped once, firmly but not cruelly. “Stay

still!”

It was the first time I had heard that tone from him, and I obeyed immediately.

He ignored the danger, lying me down gently, positioning my head carefully on the pillow and tucking the blanket over me. Every movement, every tender touch left me breathless.

He said nothing, offered no comfort beyond his careful hands, and then quietly walked out, leaving me in

My horse stopped in the courtyard, and Kai rushed forward to hold down the reins while I alighted and headed into the house without a word.

What I had heard and seen jolted me more than anything ever could. I had known Zeph for five years, and never once had I seen her weaken or lie sick in bed. It felt so strange, so utterly wrong.

I walked through the living room, bypassing my mother and sister without speaking. I had to hurry. This was the moment to show how much she truly meant to me.

I pushed open the door to my bedchamber and went straight to my wardrobe to gather my clothes when my mother entered, her eyes scanning the room and me.

“You seem to be in a hurry,” she said. I paused, letting out a long sigh. “What is going on? Nyroth?”

I collapsed onto the bed, exhausted. At that moment, Kai and Olivia also entered, their faces filled with Chapters first released on find(ɴ)ovel.net

concern.

“Zeph is sick, Mother,” I said. “She… she is so sick that she can’t even speak properly, and it breaks my heart.”

Confused glances were exchanged between them.

“How do you mean? Isn’t she the one who killed an able man seven days ago at the arena?” Kai asked. I nodded feebly.

The poison… I already knew where it came from. I swallowed hard, meeting their eyes.

“Mother, a healer was called, and she knows the cure.”

“And which is?”

“The flower located at the Empire’s Grove.”

Dead silence fell. I watched the color drain from my mother’s face and Olivia’s too.

“How do you mean?” Kai finally asked, seeming to recover from the trauma he’d sustained at Apex. “We all know the Empire’s Grove is a place of no return. Why would you even think of going there?”

“Exactly, brother,” Olivia added, horrified. “This pack needs you. I need my brother too. Why would even consider going?”

“For starters…” I began angrily, “Zeph is my mate. She is the woman the Moon Goddess fated for me. Surely you won’t advise me to stand aside while she rots and dies, right?!”

“I wouldn’t advise my own son to watch his mate die,” my mother said softly. I swallowed hard. “Any werewolf from Hue Pack is fated to only one mate in a lifetime. You are the Alpha here, Nyroth. You deserve a Luna.”

She approached and sat beside me, taking my hand gently, holding my gaze.

“The Empire’s Grove has its story, and no one who ventures there ever returns. The flower to cure every illness is located there, but no one has ever brought it back home. For such a journey, you must go for someone who means so much. But let me ask you, Does Zeph mean that much to you?”

My breath hitched. She shook her head as she continued.

“She is a rogue, Nyroth. A skillful killer. You saw what she did at the arena. How she drew arrows at the Lycan Kingdom the other night. She is dangerous, a trained assassin before she wormed herself into your life, all because of the mate bond. She is nothing but… look at Kaela. She is even the daughter of an Alpha now. She is in love with you. She is smart, ready to be yours. Tell me why you would leave all that behind to die for someone who has cheated on you?”

I blinked, lowering my gaze and swallowing hard.

“I… I cheated on Zeph many times, Mother, and… and Zeph only lay with Apex after I agreed to the rejection.”

“That

doesn’t justify her dirty deeds. She is worthless, useless, barren. She is nothing but a rogue assassin. You are an Alpha, Nyroth. She shouldn’t even have a place in your heart or your life.”

“But… but Apex…” I swallowed again. “Apex left quietly after hearing the location to find the cure.”

“See?” Olivia chipped in. “He will definitely forget about her now. Who in their sane mind would go there?”

The question hadn’t even cooled when the sound of a carriage stopping in the courtyard reached us. Minutes later, approaching footsteps followed, and the door opened.

Kaela Yadev stood in the doorway, dressed more elegantly and gracefully than ever, like the daughter of an Alpha she is.

“I came as soon as I heard. Are you okay, Nyroth?” she asked, rushing toward me. I pulled away and walked to the window to breathe.

Silence fell after my reaction, and I heard them all leaving until the door closed.

“I heard she collapsed, and she is now on her sickbed.”

“On her dying bed, Kaela,” I corrected, my gaze settling on her. “I saw what you did the other night at the duel. You gave that rogue something to cheat with.”

She said nothing, looking at me silently. I expected an apology or at least some remorse, but instead, she shrugged.

“It’s a win–win situation, Nyroth.”

“What?!” I exclaimed in horror, rushing to grab her arm. “Zeph is my mate. Why would you poison her?”

“Because she dares challenge me!” Kaela snapped, jerking her arm free from my clutch. “I am Kaela Yadev, Nyroth. No one disrupts my plans. Whatever I want, I get. You, or anything else I will have it. Besides, this mate of yours didn’t even care you existed.”

“She loved me,” I gritted out. “She only went astray when she saw me fucking you the other day.”

Silence fell between us. Slowly, she walked toward me and placed a palm flat on my chest.

“She is going to die, Nyroth. You can’t save her. No healer will find a cure.”

“One has,” I said, and she stared at me in awe. “The Lycan Princess. She is one of the most skillful healers I have ever seen.”

Kaela pulled away, a small frown on her face.

“Who would have thought the Lycan Kingdom would also have a healer? A rare treasure?” But then she shook her head. “She only know the cure. She won’t be getting it.”

“Kaela…”

“You are not going to the Empire’s Grove, are you?” she asked. The eagerness I had felt earlier seemed to wane. I swallowed hard, watching her shake her head again. “It’s a fool’s errand. You won’t die for Zeph, will you?”

“She is my mate.”

“And I am your lover, Nyroth,” she countered. “I am your first love. We have come a long way. I am the Alpha’s daughter now. I will stand by you, love you more than Zeph ever will. This body is yours. Will you leave it all behind to die for just… a rogue?”

Heavy silence descended. I replied softly.

“Zeph helped me build this pack to what it is now, Kaela. When you left me, she filled the huge hole you left behind. I can’t watch her die.”

“Then don’t go to her. That way, you won’t have to watch her die. The news will only reach you, and I promise it will be a painless death.”

“L..”

“I need you too, Nyroth. I have cramps. Will you let me wallow in pain alone?”

My heart sank at her question, and in silence, I stared at her graceful figure, standing right in my way.
