Chapter 176: Goodbye with promises

Beau.

When I open my eyes, Lanis is not next to me. You have to understand, I have been through the worst of things, so when I think something bad has happened—you can’t blame me.

I was right to be worried. I mean walking into the basement and seeing Lanis over Cassius. I don’t even know what the fuck is going on but before I can react, he is feeding him his blood. This is crazy. Lanis would not do anything to help Cassius.

He hates the guy.

I grab Lanis by the collar of his shirt but Cassius is already looking alive. The color on his skin seems to be coming out. "What the fuck Lanis,’’ I shout making sure I don’t hurt him with my aggressive push. He falls to his feet but, his blood spilling out of him.

"No,’’ Gyles shouts so loud. I didn’t even notice him.

How is he speaking and normal right now?

I guess Cassius cured whatever was wrong with him.

He tries to go over to him but my glare is so hard that he trembles "do not even think about it.’’ I warn him, already angry with the whole situation. If I had just killed the motherfucker, all this wouldn’t be happening.

"Lanis, what did you do,’’ I look at him again. He is breathing heavily, the embarrassment obvious in his face.

’’He did something to me, I can’t move.’’ He explains but all I hear is the fact that the people I let have their way tried to hurt my mate. The anger that I have had all this while, pours out of me and Gyles is pushed to the wall.

"let him go,’’ I warn him. If he doesn’t listen, I will kill him with no hesitation. He is not even meant to be alive right now.

I feel him tremble against my grip. There is a fear in him that makes me not want o hurt him. I don’t know this guy’s deal but he is not the bad guy here. Maybe it was a mistake showing him to Cassius. I should have just let him die as the monster that he is.

"I’m sorry. He is dying. I haven’t even gotten the chance to say goodbye.’’ He cries. I feel his pain. He just woke up from a slumber and the one man he could never forget is dying in his arms. I would lose my mind too.

"No one is your enemy here. Do not tempt me to show you the bad side of me,’’ I advise him. He still has a chance—unlike Cassius.

He nods his head immediately and my eyes dart over to my mate. He stands up from the ground and walks over to us "You good?’’

He nods "Wait for me outside,’’ I tell him. The dominance pours out in my voice. I never ever imagined Lanis as submissive. We are both alpha males but somehow, he always listens to me. I am not being a jerk right now. I just want to get everything under control with this Cassius’s situation.

Lanis leaves and I am left with Gyles and Cassius’s unconscious body. He is not dead, there is still life in him, which doesn’t mean he isn’t going to die.

I let go of Gyles and he sighs heavily, running his hands through his hair in frustration. I don’t know what is going on in his head. He seems very weak.

"What is your deal?’’ I ask him curious to know his plan. Cassius is going to die. Does he want to go back to the Elis?

"I don’t understand,’’ he stutters.

"I get that you are stuck in the past. The man you see here is not the same boy he once was.’’ I tell him. He needs to know the truth. I don’t plan on sugarcoating anything. If he wants a lie, he is not getting that from me.

"He can’t die. Not after everything,’’ a tear falls from his face. For the first time, I take a whiff of his scent. His inner wolf calling to me. He is a wolf. He is one of us. This is the man that Cassius was seeking vengeance for.

How is this even possible?

"Do you think healing him will bring you closure? You know he can’t survive...After everything he has done.’’

He shakes his head "Everyone deserves a second chance. Please don’t condemn him.’’

This is not on me. I gave him his second chance. I gave him an opportunity to be with him. He doesn’t even understand that I did the best I could in this situation.

"He has to die, Gyles, you have to let him go."

"Please, don’t let him die. I love him.’’

It’s been so many years. How do they still hold all these emotions for each other? It doesn’t even make any sense. Cassius was human when he was with Gyles. Fuck, they were both human. Their love doesn’t even have anything to do with the deities. I don’t even know how one person can carry this much for another.

It would have been beautiful if the situation wasn’t so messed up.

"I have no choice, Gyles. I am talking to you because I could have a space for you in the pack. If you choose to stay... you can get your second chance at living.’’

I don’t know if this is a good idea but I don’t want him to be with the Elis. They are not the best people. They dint handle Cassius well. He was a kid, alone in the world with all the anger brewing and they fueled it up until the spark lit so bright and hot.

He shakes his head "I can’t live without him.’’

"You might think so but you will survive. You have been without him for so long. You are still here; you are still strong.’’

This is the best I can do.

I want to help him.

’’I haven’t been surviving.’’

"Yes, you have." We both turn in the direction of the voice and Cassius is peering at us. He is in a seated position. His eyes are red and bloodshot. Whatever Lanis did, didn’t work. I think it just made it worse.

"No,’’ Gyles says, running over to him. He grabs both of his shoulders and pulls him up, trying to get him up.

"I am not going to make it Babe. It is too late for me."

Gyles shakes his head. Now, the tears are pouring out. I wish there was something I could do. This is all so heartbreaking. If he didn’t lead his life in the path he took, he would have found Gyles. He would have been happy but life doesn’t go the way you expect it to. His fate has been settled.

"Please, don’t leave me.’’

Cassius coughs and right in front of me, I see the decomposition of his skin. Maybe Lanis’s blood made things worse. He is deteriorating and it looks terrible. "Don’t be sad. I will always be with you. I will always be in your heart.’’

Gyles grabs his hand and squeezes it gently "I don’t want to live without you.’’

Cassius shakes his head "You have to. Promise me you will live. You will be happy. Promise me, Gyles.’’

Gyles shakes his head "You didn’t even listen to me when I told you to live. You killed yourself,’’ he accuses him.

I remember the promise.

If Cassius has listened.

All this wouldn’t be happening.

"Take it as me being stubborn. You are better than me. You always have been." He coughs loudly, this time blood spills all over the ground, Leaving stains of reminder. "Be happy, find your passion. Find love, promise me you will live the life you deserve.’’

Gyles nods, I don’t know if he is actually listening but I guess this is the end. It already feels like the end.

"I love you, I never stopped.’’ Cassius breathes out what seems like his final breath.

"I love you too.’’ Gyles manages, pressing his lips to his forehead. Cassius looks away from him, still in his arms and to me. I am like a fly on the wall. I did the best I could for him, considering everything that happened. There is nothing else I can do now.

"Beau, thank you for this, I don’t deserve it.’’

I nod, he is right. He doesn’t deserve this but I wouldn’t let him die without saying goodbye to the literal love of his life "Forgive me, even though I don’t deserve that too.’’

I manage a smile.

This is meant to be.

He is meant to die.

"That regret you talked about." He reminds me, I nod "I feel it. I feel every ounce of it right now.’’ The sound of his voice reduces and he closes his eyes. Gyles is still holding unto him in tears. I don’t know how he will get over this but I will help him. That is the best I can do.

"Thank you for showing me what it is to love. I will cherish our time together.’’ As he breathes out those words, the light in his eyes dies away completely. I feel him before I am even sure. I feel his scent as it evaporates.

Cassius is dead.

Chapter 177: Never forget

Gyles.

"You can’t do this to me. Let me go.’’ I shout from the top of my lungs. I want to scream till the point where the walls collapse. I know that is not possible. They can’t keep me here forever. That’s impossible.

The room I am in is dark and very quiet. It doesn’t seem like a prison. The kind of place you are kept to die. It actually seems like they made it clean and comfortable. If they did this, why am I still tied up? The man that was here yesterday said he is my father. How is that even possible? I could sense him. His scent was very strong.

The scent of a werewolf.

I have been shouting for a while. My screams and cries have all been futile. No one is getting me out of here. They don’t want me dead but they won’t let me go. What is their point in doing all this?

The metallic door opens and the same man walks in. the one that claimed to be my father. The one I know nothing about. He looks at me and smiles warmly. The smile tugs at my heartstrings. It feels like somehow, my body is reacting to him in a warm and fluffy way. I don’t know why that would be happening.

I don’t know the man.

He doesn’t know me either.

"Are you hungry?’’ he asks kindly.

I feel the concern in his voice. Like he genuinely cares about me. Why would he kill my family if he really did? All my decisions seem futile now. Roger would be scared and alone. He would think I am dead. I know that much now. I shouldn’t have left him. This could have been avoided if I had followed him.

"I want to go home,’’ I tell him blatantly.

He nods in understanding "I get that but you have to see where I am coming from. I already explained this to you. This is your home.’’

I look around the room. He is telling me this is my home but it feels like a prison to me. He is more of a captor to me that my father. Macaly will always be the only father I have. Now he is dead. These people killed the only person that was always there for me. He can’t possibly expect me to warm up to him, accept him when he is my biggest enemy right now.

"I showed you everything. The day you were born. Your mother, everything. You need to let go of the life you thought was yours and come back to your real family."

If I didn’t have all those memories. If I didn’t have anything before them. I would have accepted this all but I remember my life. I will always remember them. They are the people that have always been there for me and now he wants me to believe that they kidnapped me and made me who I am today?

I choose not to believe that.

"I can’t,’’ I tell him honestly.

He sighs and drops the plate in front of me "I want to show you that I mean everything I have said. You are my son... the next Alpha." He pauses and reaches for the chains, slowly breaking them free "I am going to untie you. Maybe this whole thing is making you feel like a prisoner. I want you to feel welcome here."

I scoff. I am basically in a dungeon. Does he expect me to feel at home in this place "I am not a werewolf? I am not like you people,’’ I spit out those words. He seems to think I am his child, I have never felt like a wolf. I am not one.

"Oh, I know how you feel. I hate vampires just as much as you hate the wolves. We are mortal enemies. Always will be but you also need to embrace your wolf within. You need to wake him up.’’

I don’t know what he is talking about. I have never felt anything like that. There is no wolf within me. There is nothing but emptiness inside me now that I have lost everyone. I don’t know if I will ever be able to see Roger again. I don’t know if the last time I saw him will be the last.

I don’t know anything,

Emptiness.

That is how I feel right now.

Seeing his lifeless body on that cold ground, that sight will always be etched to my memory for the rest of my life. I just got him back. He came back to my life and made me feel alive. Now he is dead. Does that even make any sense? Is it right that the one person that I genuinely loved with all my heart is gone?

"You can stay here for the night. We will give him a burial if that is what you want,’’ Beau leads me into a bedroom, unlike the one he kept Roger. Maybe I should stop calling him Roger. Beau called him Cassius. I don’t even know where they got that name from. He will always be Roger to me. He will always be that little kid that made me know what love is.

I am glad I knew him. I am glad I met him and experienced all that I did with him. I can’t believe he is gone. He was supposed to live a long normal life. I didn’t want him to become what he did.

Now it is too late.

"You would bury him in your community? After everything you claimed he did.’’

I don’t want to believe it. They said he killed so many people. I just came back, after being in a mental prison for so long. I came back to find out that the innocent boy I knew became a monster. I don’t know him like that. I won’t accept that he is but I will keep loving the person he was. I won’t focus on the bad things.

"I meant what I said. You are welcome here. If you want to stay in the pack.’’

He doesn’t even know who I am. Why would he want me here? This is a stranger, someone I don’t know but I feel his kindness, pouring out of him. There is nothing threatening about him. I respect that so much.

"I don’t know if that is a good idea. After everything Roger—Cassius did to your family. I don’t think I am welcome here."

"You haven’t done anything to us. Think about it. If you want to stay here, I will create a space for you.’’ he breathes out.

My heart thuds against my chest. I don’t think I am going to take him up on his offer. It might not be the best thing.

"I am Vampire,’’ I remind him.

He nods "My mate is a vampire, I am sure you could sense it when you compelled him,’’ there is a smile on his face, so I take it he is not upset at my actions earlier. I didn’t mean to do what I did but at that moment, I was desperate. I was losing him and I didn’t know what to do. All thoughts and actions went into saving him. I thought that would save him but it seems like it only killed him faster.

"I am sorry about him... please tell him that,’’ I mean it. I hate that I used my abilities to control someone.

"He is over it. Lanis doesn’t hold grudges.’’

Beau takes a step towards the door, I watch him as he opens it "You need anything, ask for me. Blood, meat, whatever you are craving,’’ he winks, for the first time since I saw Roger on the cold ground, I manage a faint smile.

I am still not okay. I don’t think I will ever move on from him but it feels like I can have a fresh start. It feels like I could be happy.

"Thanks.’’

He walks out of the room and leaves me in the silence of the night. I haven’t always been a fan of the dark but now, I want to wallow in all the darkness. I don’t want to think. I wish someone could just wipe all the memories out of my head—take the pain away from me. I wish I didn’t have to remember all that we were. All that we could have been.

I walk over to the window. The night sky clear and lonely. No stars in sight. I open the window and the night breeze hits me, taking me into its orbit. Closing my eyes, his face comes into light. The one I remember, not the one that I saw today. The smile that he would always carry. The red of his cheeks. The life in his eyes. All the happiness that he would transfer to me.

"Don’t forget me,’’ his voice travels into my ears. It might just be my imagination. Me holding onto him but I feel the strength of those words.

"I will never forget,’’ I breathe out and it travels to the night sky, following him to the afterlife.

Chapter 178: Finally over

Beau.

I can’t believe he is dead.

Holy shit.

It felt like a relief. Seeing his dead body on the ground. I don’t have to worry about Cassius and all the drama that came with him. I know Gyles might be someone to worry about, he is not as harmless as I thought he was. He attacked my baby. He controlled him.

I don’t like that he can do that.

Surprisingly, that is the same abilities, Lanis has. I don’t know how he did that so easily. It feels like is stronger than I even imagine. He looks like a kid. He has this innocent look about him, which makes me want to know his story. Makes me want to help him. That is why I asked him to stay. He is more than welcome in the pack. I think it will be a good idea to let him in. show him that we are not monsters—even though we are responsible for Cassius’s death. It was meant to happen. It has been a long time coming.

After giving him a room to stay in for the rest of the night. I go back to my room, Lanis is already there waiting for me. The bite on his wrist has healed. Apart from the blood on his shirt. There is no evidence of that ever happening.

"Are you okay?’’ I ask him worried.

I don’t want any more problems for the rest of the night. I still have to worry about the fact that my bite killed a vampire. Do you know what that even means?

I am mated to a vampire.

I don’t want to be a danger to him.

I need it not to be that way.

"Yeah, I don’t know how he did that. No one has ever been able to control my body. It’s usually just the mind,’’ he tells me.

Usually, with mind control, they lose their minds but today, Lanis was there. He knew what was happening.

"He is strong,’’ I tell him, "I could feel the presence of his wolf. Kind of seems like he isn’t aware.’’ I tell him what I have noticed with Gyles. He is a vampire but he is also a wolf. Maybe he is a hybrid. I mean that is the only plausible theory.

"Do you plan on giving him back to the Elis? I mean they only agreed to let you have him for a couple of hours,’’

"He is not their property. He is a person.’’

"It’s not that easy. You need to understand that they like things to go their way. You don’t know the plans they would have for him.’’

I frown "Can we not talk about the Elis. I need to focus all this energy on something else. Maybe you,’’ I tell him, pulling him closer to me. He smiles in my arms, his lips just an inch away from mine. With one movement, our lips will be pressed together.

"What do you want to talk about?’’ he smiles in my arms. His eyes are still open but there is a dreamy look in them. Almost like he is so relaxed.

I guess the fact that it is all over—or maybe the most threatening part. Fallon is still at the back of my mind. I just feel like he will pop up out of the blue and somehow cause a lot of chaos. "Us, I have been thinking about that dream I had. You know, our kids.’’ He brings the one thing I desperately crave. I have thought about it and I don’t know how it will work but it is everything I want. The only thing that matters to me right now.

"it’s insane.... right?’’

He nods immediately "Yeah but do you think it’s possible, like how would it happen. I mean, we are two guys.’’

I laugh. That is his take on it all. A lot of impossibles has happened. The fact that we are together, even though the odds were against us is another thing "Do you know what that means?’’ I ask him.

He furrows his brow and that crinkle on his face, that I love creases on his forehead "What?’’ he mutters, still in my arms.

I smile because I know what I am about to say will make him smile too "We are going to have to have a lot of sex,’’ I drag him until we are on the bed. The sheets are already messed up from earlier. He is beneath me on the bed, my eyes bore into him. I can never tire of seeing his face. Staring at him like a creep. He is the one person I will never get tired of. You have no idea how lucky we have been. Gyles just lost the love of his life. In the blink of an eye, he said goodbye to Cassius, without even knowing all the things he did. Lanis is still here with me. He is still in my arms. I can think about our future and know there is one for us. I have so much to look forward to.

It feels like I am the luckiest man on earth.

Fucking hell.

"You’re mine,’ I press my lips to his and he welcomes me wholeheartedly.

********************

"Hello,’’ I breathe into the phone.

"Our community is not as damaged as we thought it would be. My son saved the day if I must say.’’ Walker fields mutters into the phone.

I know Cassius sents some of his lackeys to the green springs pack but hearing that there was no damage is good news.

"Everyone is okay?’’ I ask.

"You know that is impossible. We lost a few people but the majority affected were the vampires.’’ He assures me.

The fact that innocent people still died just reminds me that Cassius’s death was always inevitable. There is no doubt in my mind that he would have led a noble life with Gyles. Seeing him with Gyles, I knew he was redeemable but at the end of the day, he needed to be punished for all his actions.

He needed to die.

"That is good to hear.’’

"Yes, it is. We have you to thank. Now that he is dead, I don’t have to worry about my pack being the next target.’’

the fact that he sees things that way just shows me how much of an understanding person the man is. I know we are going to have a good relationship with their pack. Somehow, Cassius and his damage has formed a unity between two different packs. If he ever needs my pack, we will be there in a heartbeat.

"I am glad it is all over,’’ I manage into the phone. I don’t have to think about Cassius for the rest of my life. There will always be the reminder and all the damage that he caused but no more thoughts of him again.

"I want to officially invite you and your family for a weekend in the springs...what do you say,’’ walker asks and a vacation away from home doesn’t sound so bad.

"Oh, that sounds nice. A break away from home sounds good.’’

He laughs into the phone "Then it is settled. Does next week sound good?’’

"next week is great.’’

I end the call and Lanis walks into the room. "The omegas are back. You need to hear the good that Jabi did,’’ he beams brightly almost a little proud. I heard from Darrien already. Apparently, he is way stronger than we all expected. Blue still hasn’t told us what is going. There is no definite answer to what is going on inside all of us. We did the mating ceremony and there have been changes internally. I need to figure it all out.

We walk out of my room and I bump into Rex as he enters his. He looks at me immediately. i didn’t realize how much I have missed him. There was a time when I wouldn’t even go anywhere without him.

"Come here,’’ I gesture with my finger and he walks over to me. He is dressed in a pair of dirty jeans and a plain red T-shirt. His hair is messy on his head, his glasses resting on his nose gently. He obeys me immediately and stops in front of me "Are you okay?’’ I ask him. I feel his wolf, the excitement from being around me. Even his wolf has missed me.

"Yes,’’ he answers immediately, his voice shaking.

I really wish he would find his mate already. At this point, I think it is about time. Maybe he needs to widen his horizon.

Go out more?

Something is bound to happen.

I pull him into my arms and he rests in the crook of my neck. Lanis watches us from the corner but I don’t sense any jealousy. He already knows my relationship with Rex. I get protective when it comes to him. Almost makes me feel like a parent.

"It’s all over,’’ I assure him.

Maybe that’s like second-hand assurance to myself.

Finally.

S

Chapter 179: Stay with me

One week later

Rex.

It’s been one week since the deaths. Since the killings. Hell, I am glad it is over. I can finally focus on the things that matter. To me, school is the most important thing to me. Because of the drama, I lost a session and now I have to work twice as hard. Going back to normal life has been the most relaxing thing ever.

Not having to think about that motherfucker Cassius—I know, it is not good to speak ill of the dead. I mean, it is not cool calling him a motherfucker but he did all those bad things. He hurt all those people.

"Yo," Beau walks into my room without knocking. There is this newfound happiness that takes over him. It is good to see him being back to his old self. I think the whole Cassius drama made him into a downer. Now he is smiling, he looks brighter and happier. Just like he was before.

"What’s up,’’ I ask returning the smile.

"We’re all going to the Greenspring’s community this weekend. Would you like to come with?’’ he asks like he needs my permission. The funny thing is, if he orders me to go, I will have no choice but to obey him. He is the Alpha of the pack. the leader and basically my boss—if you want to put it like that.

"Do I have a choice?’’ I ask him.

He laughs "Well if you are not feeling up to it. You don’t have to. Darrien and Jabi are not going, you could stay if you want to rest this weekend." He tells me and for the first time. I feel like I don’t have any pressure to do anything.

"Are you sure?’’ I ask wanting to be very sure that he doesn’t need me.

"One hundred percent,’’ he winks at me and walks out of my room. I lie back on my bed with the book I was reading before he came in tightly grasped around me. after a couple of hours of reading, I decide to go out for some fresh air. A week ago, we were not allowed to go out. We had to stay indoors but now; it feels like things are calm. It is easier to be free. As a wolf, not being able to go outside. The feel of the sun on our fur could weaken us.

Once outside, I go to my usual spot. A rock by the trees. This is my space; it is usually very quiet and I get more reading done outside.

"Hey,’’ I look up and Blue smiles at me warmly. That smile turns my insides into a gooey mess. I have never seen anyone as attractive as Blue. He has this aura about him that screams out to me. makes me want to get to know him. Seeing Blue. I don’t think he is my mate. It is just so wrong. The whole thing is. He is a lone wolf. He doesn’t belong in a pack and I also heard that he is a warlock. Like how is that mix even possible. In my mind, I want someone normal. I just want a wolf—with no drama and maybe that is why I haven’t given him a chance.

"hi,’’ I respond with a slight wave.

He takes another step towards me and the smile is still on his face. He stops in front of the rock and points at it "Can I sit?’’ he asks calmly. His voice is deep and masculine. It makes me want to just melt in his arms. If this is how I am, when I haven’t given in to him, I wonder how I will be when I do.

I’m not saying I will.

But...

"So, everything’s over,’’ he tells me with a sad smile. Another reminder that Cassius is dead. God, it feels so good to say he is dead.

"Yeah, thank goodness.’’

He chuckles nervously. Why is he nervous? I am the last person he should be nervous with. He reaches for me; I flinch away before he gets the chance of touching me.

"That means I am leaving,’’ he informs me, even though I already knew that it was bound to happen. I mean, he came here with Jules. Jules never intended to stay. This was just supposed to be until Cassius died. Cassius is dead, so it only makes sense.

"Oh,’’

His eyes remain fixed on me. he doesn’t budge. I wish he would just look away because I don’t like the things it is doing to me "Maybe I could stay for a while, what do you think?’’

It is tempting. I really wish I had the courage to say yes to him. Tell him that I want him to stay. That I want to explore whatever this is but as usual. I am a coward. I was a coward when the vampires attacked the bus and I am a coward now with Blue.

"if you want to,’’ I shrug nonchalantly even though my heart is beating like crazy.

He tilts his head and squints his eyes, almost like he is studying me. trying to figure out something that I don’t know. Slowly, he leans forward "Do you want me to?’’

He is asking me and his eyes are taunting me, pleading. Does he feel the same way about me? does he feel this connection and is he interested in exploring this.

"Uh...i..i... don’t know,’’ I stutter like the mess I am.

The smile remains on his face as he reaches out for me again, this time I don’t pull away. Maybe if he touches me; I will know. His hand stops just an inch away from my face. I close my eyes—waiting for the touch but it never comes "Maybe I want to stay... with you.’’

I open my eyes and he is watching me; I don’t know what to do but I like the way he looks at me. I wish he would never take his eyes off me.

"Why?’’ I manage in question.

His hand is just an inch away from me, he doesn’t attempt to touch me anymore "I don’t know. Maybe I like being around you." He winks then continues "You intrigue me to the point where you’re all I think about.’’

I intrigue him?

I have never intrigued anyone. In all my years on this planet.

"Then stay... don’t leave,’’ I finalize, the courage suddenly pouring out of me. at this point, I don’t care if he is my mate. I don’t care that his mother is a witch and he is not full wolf. I just want to get to know him. I just want to get to know someone for the first time in my sad life.

His smile widens, I see his teeth, white and flawless. Just like the rest of him. I have seen so many perfect men in my life. Beau is one of the most beautiful men I know but looking at blue now, in his faded jeans and black shirt. He looks more than perfect to me.

"You can’t get tired of me if I do. You have to promise me."

How will I ever get tired of him? Blue could literally just be staring at me and I wouldn’t be bored. He is perfect.

"I won’t,’’ I assure him. This is the only thing I am sure of. I doubt I will get tired of him. His story alone is interesting.

"You sure about that?’’

I nod and this time, he cups my face in his palm. I don’t know what I was expecting from his touch but it wasn’t this. The reaction is instant. Feels like chemicals are swimming within me. it completely takes over my whole being. I stay still, trying to control the excitement happening within. It must be obvious to him because the touch becomes a soft caress. I close my eyes because looking at him makes it even worse. His eyes are intense. I have always thought that about them and now all I can think about is kissing him.

I have never wanted to kiss anyone as bad as I want to kiss him.

"I won’t go anywhere,’’ he assures me and I keep my eyes closed.

A second later, his hand is off me and he is up to his feet. I open my eyes and the beam in his eyes is bright. So very bright. "I should head out, are you going to the Greenspring’s community?’’ he asks.

"No,’’ I tell him.

His smile wipes off his face "too bad, I thought I’d get to spend more time with you there.’’ He mutters disappointedly.

Suddenly, I want to go.

I go back inside with thoughts lingering. Blue is a great guy, he will be a good mate. asking him to stay might eventually be the best decision I will make in my life.

I have this weekend to prepare for how I am going to handle this.

I need to know if I should run into this full force or hide away from it all.

Chapter 180: Chocolates

Rex.

I wish I hadn’t said I didn’t want to go. Knowing that blue will be with them the whole weekend changes the dynamics.

Now it will look suspicious if I say I do want to go.

Gosh, all these confusing emotions stirring inside me are driving me crazy. I know it is already too late to suggest going. What is the point of going now? The reasons why I didn’t want to go still stand on ground. I just want a break from werewolf duties. I don’t want to think about packs and Cassius. They will definitely talk about him. I don’t want to hear about him, think about him—or even breathe anywhere anyone that is talking about him. This man terrorized us. Still thinking about it makes me scared. Wonder what the fuck, caused all this.

Why us?

I walk back to my room with all my thoughts revolving around Blue. The way he looked at me, the way he touched me. I am almost certain he is my mate. I mean, this is what I wanted. I have been longing for this person for so long, so why do I feel like something is off. There is this complete feeling you get when you find your mate. You want to be with the person forever, you are content but a part of me is not fully content.

What does that even mean?

My phone rings in my pocket, the caller ID is Frieda. Frieda is a friend from school. She has been helping me send my assignments to me all through this whole drama. Usually, Beau and I are always together in school but he mostly absconds. So Freida is the only other person that I call a friend.

She is the only other person that is nice to me.

"Hey,’’ she breathes into the phone excitedly.

"Hi Fry,’’ I call her by her nickname.

"So how is your family now. Are things settled?’’ she asks.

She doesn’t know all the details because I try to keep my home life private and I don’t want to be the cause of any problems. Trusting people means there is a chance for betrayal. I don’t want to be betrayed.

This is why I keep my life and who I am a secret. Frieda just knew that I was going through some stuff, she didn’t know that it was literally life or death.

"Things are way better now,’’ I smile into the phone. Beau saved us. Everyone thought he wasn’t going to do it but I always believed in him. I always knew he was brave and strong. I knew he was going to be our hero.

’’That’s great, do you want to go to a party?’’ she asks.

I shake my head immediately. I am not ready for a party. Beau is the only person I let drag me to parties. I just left her for a couple of weeks and now she is suggesting parties. She should know that I wouldn’t agree with this.

"Come on man, it’s just one party." She cries into the phone.

"when?’’

I look up from my bed and wait for her reply "Tomorrow night. Don’t worry, it is not the type of party you think it is. A couple of guys from the STEM club are having a get-together. I need someone to go with so I don’t look like a nerd.’’

I want to tell her that she is a nerd but I keep that comment to myself.

"Okay,’’ I agree with a sigh.

It is not the kind of party that I thought, so I could go for it. The truth is, I am a nerd. The only reason why I was in the cool clique is because of Beau. No one could classify us as Nerds because of him. He just has this aura that screams popular. With Frieda, we are in the same cliques. The right type of friends.

"Thank you, thank you,’’ she rambles continuously until I end the call.

After the call, I go out of my room to the kitchen to get water. Gyles is seated on the stool by the counter. He is eating a bar of snickers and there is a can of coke in front of him. He jumps off the chair immediately. terrified that I snuck up on him—not that I did.

"Sorry, I’ll leave.’’ He grabs the soda and heads over to the direction of the door/. I stop him because I don’t want him to leave because of me. Gyles is scary. Just the fact that he is involved with Cassius is scary to me. I don’t know how I feel about the fact that Beau let him stay in the main house with us. I don’t trust the guy. He was involved with that bastard.

"You don’t have to, you can stay.’’

He stops walking and turns around. The surprise on his face. I look at him for the first time and notice how handsome he is. His eyes are green, like crystals under a full moon. His hair is jet black, almost a contradiction to the brightness of his eyes. He looks my age. Very young and innocent. He is tall like I have to look up at him to see him clearly.

"Thanks,’’ he mutters and goes back to the stool.

I walk over to the fridge and grab a bottle of water from it "I thought you were a vampire...how come you’re eating chocolate so deliciously?’’

I don’t know why I am starting a conversation with him. I never do things like this but he looked so lonely sitting here in the kitchen and I also have a couple of things I am curious about.

"I don’t even know what I am anymore,’’ he utters quietly.

His voice is deep, the baritone travels through the night and to my skin. It gives me goosebumps.

"Does it taste like food to you...or is it gross?’’

He shrugs and takes another bite; I watch him as he licks the chocolate off his lips. My eyes remain on them. I don’t know why. "It tastes like chocolate...not the kind I used to have as a kid. This one tastes sweeter.’’

"There are different types. Not just snickers. The only reason why we have these in the fridge is because Beau is obsessed but I could get you some tomorrow. So, you can find your favorite,’’’ I suggest eagerly. I don’t know what the fuck I am doing. Why am I doing this?

He looks at me and for a second, he doesn’t say anything. To me, it feels like his eyes are staring into my soul. Eating at the strings of my heart, making it fall.

"Thanks,’’ he mutters finally with a smile. This is the first time I have seen him smile. In all the week he has been here and I have to say, it is the most beautiful smile I have ever seen. I don’t know what Is happening here but as his smile vanishes, I groan internally. Wishing I could get to see that smile again.

What is going on?

He takes the last bite of the bar and I watch him as he tosses the wrapper into the trash can. He grabs the soda "I should go. This must be weird for you; I’m sure.’’

When I first walked into the kitchen and saw him—I for sure thought it was going to be weird but now that he is leaving, I don’t want him to. I wish he’d stay and talk to me "No, it’s not,’’ I assure him with a slight stutter. He is making me nervous right now and I don’t think he even knows it.

"You sure?’’ he raises a brow.

I know he is fishing for something. Beau said he could stay in the pack but I also know he doesn’t feel welcome here. He has been here for a week, I am surprised he hasn’t left.

"Very,’’ I admit.

The smile comes back to his face. My heart races in my chest. The confusion that is going on in my mind is very big. I don’t know what is happening because when I think about Blue, there are butterflies in my tummy and now, looking at Gyles. I want to know more about him. I want to be his friend. I want to make him smile.

"Thanks, Rex,’’ he says my name. I didn’t even know that he knew my name. suddenly, this makes me feel even more special. It makes me happy that he took the time to learn my name. yeah, I know it is stupid but that is what is going on right now.

"Sure,’’ I manage.

He heads to the door "Do you want to go to a party tomorrow?’’

He stops and faces me again "party?’’ he asks.

"Yeah, not a party, party, but like a get-together with friends. You could use this opportunity to get out of the pack and see the real world,’’ I suggest.

I don’t know how Beau will feel about this but I want to do this for him. Maybe this is just me wanting to spend time with him.

"Sure.’’
