Ch. 276..280: The Werewolf's Vampire Mate Chapter 276-280
Chapter 276: Trapped
Rex.
I see blood everywhere.
Blood on the walls, blood on the floors. The kind of blood that only means one thing--death. Walking around the dark halls, I go in search of someone, anyone to get me out of this mess that I am in. I look around but the more I look, the more blood I see. My hands, the clothes on my body, everything is messed up and I can’t get out of here.
This place that is covered in blood.
Nightmares.
I have never been someone that had nightmares. I lost my parents at a very young age. I saw them, bloody and hurt. I was just a kid—it scarred me but I never liked to think about it. I never liked to remember all the pain I felt when they died.
Tonight is the first time in a long time that I had a nightmare. The kind that makes me shudder and tremble. I am covered in sweat as I sit up on the bed. Blue is next to me. His eyes are closed and he is snoring softly. Gyles is next to him, seems like he shifted his bed in the night.
Darting my eyes to the window, the sky is bright. The sun is out. It is another day and I feel the exact same way I felt yesterday. The dream I had last night keeps springing up in my mind. The fear and worry won’t leave me like this.
My wolf has been very quiet.
I don’t know what is going on and I feel like if I talk to Blue about all this, he will just worry more. I am tired of making everyone worry. I am tired of being burdensome. I reach for my phone and see a missed call from Beau. He is probably just checking up on me. I get up from the bed and walk into the bathroom with the phone. I don’t want to wake them up. I don’t even know what time they finally slept last night.
Beau answers on the first ring and I sit down on the toilet.
"How’s the surprise?’’ he asks me.
I don’t know how to tell him all that has happened but I know I have to "Not as good as I thought it would be." I confess. I had an image in my head, one were Blue would see us and be happy. There was no attack, no stabbing. It was the perfect surprise. Totally not the way it turned out.
"Didn’t go as planned?’’
"Yeah, something happened."
I hear a sigh from his end "Are you okay?’’ he asks immediately.
"Yeah. I think so.’’
I don’t feel okay. I know Blue can tell. There is something really wrong with me and I just can’t pinpoint what it is. Whatever happened to me in that estate must have been bad and I feel like I will not be able to come around to that again?
I want to feel like my old self. The one that didn’t have a worry. I don’t like the way I feel right now. "I hurt some people.’’
"What do you mean by that?’’
I exhale softly "I don’t know how to explain it. Something happened to me and I ended up stabbing Gyles and Blue’s mother.’’
It sounds weird saying it like that but I don’t have another way to explain this to him. is telling him that I stabbed people the best way I can explain this?
Fucking hell.
"You are scaring me dude, what are you talking about?"
He sounds scared. I am still scared because it seems like Blue isn’t too upset with me about his mother but if she doesn’t make it, will he be able to look me in the eye normally?
"I don’t know how to explain it. I wasn’t myself.’’
"Where are you now?’’ he asks me, the worry evident in his voice.
"I am with Blue and Gyles."
He sighs "You should be on your way back home. Why are you still at his coven?’’
Beau will worry until it reaches the point where he will look for me himself. I don’t want it to get to that point because I completely trust Blue more than anything and if he wants to take me back home, then that is what we will do.
I don’t want to disagree with him and with the way I have been feeling. It is a good idea to let him figure out what is wrong with me.
"He needs to make sure I am okay.’’
Beau sighs into the phone "You know I can’t come and drag you home myself. I need to be home for Lanis with everything.’’ He breathes into the phone. I nod my head in understanding. I don’t even want him to come and get me.
"I am fine. Really. Once I figure out what is wrong, I will let you know.’’
"I don’t even know why there is something wrong in the first place. If anything else happens, I want you to call me immediately.’’
I end the call with promises that I know I will keep. Beau is a brother to me. From when I was a kid, all he did was protect me. Even until now, he makes sure I am okay and I will not take that for granted. I walk over to the mirror and my reflection terrifies me. The bloodshot eyes, dark circles and discoloured skin. Waking up this morning, I feel even weaker than I felt before going to bed.
Because your mission is not complete.
I shake my head as a thought crawls through my head. There is a voice inside my head that doesn’t belong to my wolf. I grip strands of my hair as I take steady breaths, my attempt at blocking the sound off.
Finish your mission.
Kill them all.
As the words resonate. I remember my dream last night. I remember all the blood in the house. It all suddenly feels too real and scary.
Kill them all.
For a second, the person I see in the reflection isn’t me. There is someone else there. A woman. I remember her from the other day. There is a smile on her face as she stretches her hand out. I watch as she crawls out of the mirror, reaching out for me. I don’t know what is happening right now but I feel lifeless. I feel like I am in a cage again and I can’t get out.
I feel trapped.
Chapter 277: Acting suspicious
Blue.
I open my eyes to sounds in the bathroom.
Jumping off the bed, I see that Gyles is the only one on his side. He is still sleeping soundly. My mind goes to Rex because right now, he is not in the right frame of mind and the fact that I can’t sense anything from him scares me terribly. The only thing I have is my willed sense. The part of me that makes me less vulnerable to the world and now it seems like there is something blocking my abilities from reading him.
I walk over to the door of the bathroom and knock on it gently. I don’t want him to think I don’t trust him in there. Yeah, he is not himself right now but he is there. He might not be completely okay but from his eyes, I know he is still there.
"Rex,’’ I call his name gently. I hear the rummaging in the bathroom and when I turn the handle, I realize that the door is locked "Are you okay in there?’’ I ask because now I am getting worried.
The sounds don’t reduce and in a second, I hear footsteps and Gyles is next to me "What is going on?’’ he asks, I turn to him slowly and his eyelids are half-closed. It’s funny that you would just wake up from sleep and still be tired.
"I don’t know, he won’t answer,’’ I inform him even though the fear is evident in my voice. I am already thinking of worse case scenarios.
"Rex, open the door,’’ Gyles moves closer to the door and starts to hit on it. My heart is already pounding against my chest. He hits the door louder "Open the fucking door now,’’ he is thinking the same things I am thinking.
Rex is unstable now.
"I am going to fucking break this door down,’’ he warns him. There is silence at the other side of the door and a couple of seconds later, he opens the door and we both watch him. "Hey,’’ he says with a faint smile. This smile is fake, I know him, I know how he smiles and right now, he is not smiling with his eyes.
"Didn’t you hear us knocking?’’ I ask him confused by the whole situation.
He sighs loudly. Almost like he is frustrated with this. "I was using the toilet, am I not allowed to on my own?’’
I close my eyes for a second as he walks further into the room, completely ignoring our worried expressions. I watch him unsure of what to say or do.
"What the fuck is wrong with him?’’ Gyles asks confused too.
"I don’t know,’’ I tell him.
I walk over to Rex and he doesn’t push me away as I reach for him "Why was there so much noise in there. It sounded like you were talking to someone. Who were you talking to?’’
If I thought something was wrong with him yesterday, then he looks and is acting even worse today.
"I wasn’t talking to anyone. I was using the toilet. It is obvious you don’t trust me and think I am going to do something crazy, so why don’t we just get on with it.’’ he pushes me off him and walks out of the room, stopping in front of the door "I’ll be waiting in the car,’’ he tells me as he walks out.
I am shocked right now.
"What is wrong with him?" Gyles asks me. His eyes dart back and forth.
"I don’t know, he is acting really weird right now.’’
He nods "Rex is not an angry person. He doesn’t do things like this. What could make him act this way and how do you plan on fixing this?’’
He is asking me questions that I don’t know. I don’t know how to fix him—for the first time in my life, my magic can’t help me.
"Something happened before we got to the coven,’’ Gyles blurts.
I furrow my brows as he continues "He disappeared for over an hour. I looked everywhere for him and he was nowhere to be found. I think something happened to him while was away and he couldn’t remember anything.’’
I already knew someone did this to him. I have known since he attacked my mother. There is no way, he did that on his own. Someone needed a scapegoat and they must have known he was involved with me. They must have seen him as an easy target.
"You need to figure out what to do. I am scared that he will try to hurt someone else again,’’ Gyles speaks up "You didn’t see him that night. He wasn’t himself at all.’’
The only thing I can think to do is trying the memory potion. I want to see what happened to him. I have to find out who did this to him.
I just hope there is no block because if there is, I might as well be screwed.
Dark magic is not one to be played with. I might be strong but I don’t think I am strong enough to outsmart whoever is responsible for this. I just hope Rex is strong enough to fight this.
"Come on, let’s go,’’ I tell Gyles and he obeys me by packing the bag he brought with him here. We walk out to the parking lot and Rex is in the car.
He seems a little too eager.
Why does he want to go back to the coven so much?
Makes me not want to take him there.
Fuck, I don’t know what to do.
We get to the car and he looks at us over the back seat. There is a smile on his face "Took you long enough,’’ he mutters playfully.
I keep stealing glances at Gyles because he is the only one that understands how I feel right now. "We had to pack our shit,’’ Gyles tells him with a shrug. He is in the driver’s seat. Rex leans over in between both cars with the smile still on his face. That guilt that he had last night is not there.
There is something dark emanating from him.
I reach for him and in that split second, I see it. I see the blood, I see everything but the one thing I can’t get out of my head is the evil smile on his face as he stands over our bodies.
Chapter 278: Fear
Lanis.
Having someone like Beau who is already a very caring person be extra caring is the best thing in the world. It has been three days since he said he was going to pamper me and those three days have been the best days of my life.
One of the healers came over to check up on me yesterday. There was an obvious shock in their eyes when they discovered that the baby. All this while we both knew but it was never confirmed and now it is even more real.
I am still not one hundred percent at that place where I have accepted this because this is still as scary to me as it was when I first felt the changes. Two babies, growing inside of me. That is something I just can’t get used to.
"Hey babe,’’ Beau walks over to me with a smile on his face. He crawls over to the bed until he is in front of me with a cheesy smile on his face. There is nothing Beau wouldn’t do for me. I have been living for those moments for the past week. His lips press to mine and I close my eyes as I enjoy this moment. Every second I share with Beau is a blessing. One that I want for the rest of my life. I can’t imagine my life without him. The dream I had, was terrible. A world where he didn’t exist. I still think about the days I lived before I met him. The searching, the loneliness, longing. I don’t ever want to feel that way and if I have to go through this, then I would gladly.
He pulls away from me slowly but his eyes never leave mine. When he looks at me, it feels like he is staring into my soul. The kind of intensity will only ever be understood by him. "How was the meeting?" I ask him genuinely curious to know how it went.
He smiles and then rests his head on my chest. Slowly I feel him completely melt in my arms "the lead we got on Fallon is legit. He is in a couple of towns away from us. We think it will be a good idea to get to him before he sneaks up on us.’’
I hear him clearly but I don’t know if I like what he is saying. I remain quiet because I don’t know how I feel about letting him go on this alone. I want to come with him but I know he wouldn’t let me. Right now, if he could keep me in a bubble for the next nine months or so, he would.
"Say something,’’ he breathes out, leaning forward so that he can get a clearer view of my face.
I close my eyes with a long sigh because I am not in the place to tell him not to do this. He needs closure on his father’s death and he will only get that if he finds the man that killed him. Fallon has been in hiding for so long and this is a good thing. We know where he is.
I just don’t want to let him out of my sight. I want to see him at all times with me. Maybe that is just too much to ask for—he is the Alpha of this pack after all. He can’t possibly ask his people to do all the work. Especially since this man is his uncle.
"I want to come with you,’’ I tell him immediately.
"It’s dangerous,’’ he says deadpan.
He has already made up his mind.
"I know but I just want to make sure you don’t get hurt.’’
He nods and then sits up on the bed, "I know that and I need to make sure nothing happens to you. I know you can handle this but I can’t be worrying about you the whole time. You are all that’s on my mind, so it is better if I know you are at home safe than with me out there.’’
I get what he is saying and I don’t want to cause another fight. We are at a very great place in our relationship. The place that I want to be in for the rest of this pregnancy.
"I have a surprise for you,’’ he tells me, slowly jumping off the bed and to the door. I sit up because he probably wanted to lead with that when he walked in. "I got someone to come keep you company,’’ his smile widens. He is already under the notion that I am not going to argue with him. That I will just listen to him and stay at home like some kind of housewife.
Is that what I have become?
He opens the door and I wait for him patiently. The person I see on the other side is not someone I was even expecting—or have even thought about in quite a while.
"Russ?’’
Russ walks into the room with a wide smile on his face, his hands out stretched. I don’t even move from the bed because I am shocked that he would think I would want to spend my time worrying with Russ.
"What is this?’’ I ask, confused as fuck.
"My long lost best friend. You know, I should be pissed as fuck but I miss you dearly." He jumps on the bed and into my arm without consent. I lay limp in his arms and he chuckles "So, you went gay on me,’’ he says as he pulls away from me, not even bothering to get off the bed.
My eyes dart to Beau and he has a smile on his face. I raise a brow because this has me confused. I don’t even understand his logic for this. He could have brought anyone. Eligio—even Darrien is a better baby sitter than Russ. Why do I even need a baby sitter?
"Okay, I am glad you guys are acquainted. I should be on my way." Beau blurts out. I didn’t even know he was leaving now. What the fuck is this?
I jump up from the bed and walk over to him "You are leaving tonight?’’ I ask him, not even paying attention to Russ on the bed. Russ is my best friend but I have been so distracted by my new life that somehow, I put him on the sidelines.
"I know it is sudden but we have to get there before he knows that we know. i promise I will be back.’’ He grabs my hands in his and squeezes.
"I can handle coming with you. I am not even that far along. It has just been a couple of weeks. Please don’t leave me home with him.’’
I am acting childish.
"Yo, I am not that bad. We do have a lot to catch up on,’’ Russ interrupts our conversation.
He is actually not bad but I still need to be with Beau. "Just a day, two days max. Be patient okay.’’ He leans forward and his lips are on mine. I know, I know I am clingy. I keep thinking back to the dream. The goddess of the moon showed me something that I don’t ever want to experience. The life that I would live if he doesn’t exist. If anything happens to him and I don’t want that. I want him in my life with our kids. I want our happiness so badly.
"It’s not fair,’’ I cry. Real tears fall out of my eyes and I try to wipe them off but he is quicker than me. He lays his hands on my face and I close my eyes.
"This is just hormones. Ogma mentioned that you would be extra emotional during the first trimester." He is smiling, to me, it seems like he is floating on cloud nine. Talking about hormones and trimesters. This must be a cruise for him.
"Then don’t leave me here,’’ I beg not wanting to tell him that this is not about hormones. This is about the fear of losing him and the things that Selene showed me.
"I am not leaving you. You got to let me handle this on my own."
I can see the frustration in his eyes. I don’t want to act this way but it also feels like I have no choice "You won’t even notice that I am there. You can count on me,’’ I grab the collar of his shirt and his eyes shift to my hands. Fuck, I am acting clingy.
"Meet me halfway, okay. Just do this for me today. Please?’’
My hands stay on his shirt. I had hoped that I would be able to convince him but I see it, he doesn’t want me to go with him. He wouldn’t back down on his words. Not even for me.
"Let the man go dude," Russ says in an attempt to break the ice.
"Please,’’ Beau repeats, slowly batting his lashes.
I sigh because there is no way I will win this. "Okay. You win.’’ I let go of him and he smiles, leaning in again. "I love you plenty."
I want to tell him I love him too but there is this fear inside me. Call it PTSD but I fear that something will go wrong. I fear that I will lose him.
Chapter 279: Losing me is better than losing you
Blue.
We get back to the estate and the closer we get there, the more terrified I get. Rex was quiet all through the journey and that is not the problem. The things I saw in his head, scare me. The fact that my innocent mate is having those thoughts are driving me insane.
I park the car in front of the house and we all look at each other. Even Gyles has been quiet and I don’t even know what he is thinking. I am curious to know what is running through his mind. Does he still feel guilty?
Is he as frustrated about this situation as I am?
I am the only one that can help Rex and I don’t even know what to do. "We can get out now,’’ I tell them. I have a lot on my plate. The elders expect me to figure this out on my own. They want me to find the culprit and prove that Rex is not the guilty party and even though I am so sure about it, I don’t know how I will get through this. I have to get inside his head. I have to see what he saw when they cast the spell on him. The people that did this are not stupid. I don’t even think they would leave his memory open.
I don’t think they would be that sloppy and at the end of it all, I know the only way to do this would be to use dark magic. I have always been terrified of dark magic. I hate that I have to even think in that direction.
We all get down from the car and I lead them into the house. There is a guard at the door. The security has been extra tight but when I think about how easy it was for Gyles to get Rex out of the dungeons, I don’t think it is good enough.
This is something I will have to work on. The ability to be compelled so easily needs to be blocked. I don’t know a lot of things. My magic was never really established because I didn’t want this life and now, I am stuck in this life with no way out. I don’t know what to do and I don’t want to make it so obvious.
I lead them into my room "What is the plan?’’ Gyles asks suddenly.
I take a deep breath because there is no actual plan. "I don’t know. We need to get into your head. See the things that happened. I know it is a long shot but I want to try and see if it will work. Can we do that?’’ I ask rex.
He furrows his brows and for a second there is a spark in his eyes. The kind that I know he usually has. The person that was in the car with us wasn’t Rex. This person in front of me seems more like him.
"When did we get here?’’ he manages in confusion.
I walk up to him and Gyles watches curiously. His eyes are on us "You don’t remember?’’ I ask him, placing my palm on his forehead. His temperature is high, he is burning up.
"No, I remember going to bed but I don’t remember waking up or even walking into this house." His voice is shaking—he sounds fucking terrified.
I take steady breaths because I don’t want to panic. I said it before. The aura around him was dark, he was unrecognizable to me. "I need to check you. Will you come with me?’’ I ask him.
He nods immediately. There is nothing like unknown fear. Right now, he doesn’t know what Is happening. He is not present in time. "Stay here,’’ I warn Gyles. He nod immediately.
I lead him into the potion room and Levine is inside. She looks up at me "You’re back,’’ she mutters calmly.
"How is she?’’ I ask.
She shrugs "Not doing so good. I don’t think she will make It.’’ she tells me what I already know. From the beginning of this, I felt it. I didn’t see any chance of her surviving the attack. This is not something I wanted, I am just exhausted and I guess that is why it hasn’t really registered. My priority is getting Rex out of this mess.
"I can’t deal with that right now," I tell her as she gets down from the chair she is on and walks in the direction of the door. I know this is affecting her a lot more than it is affecting me. She is her sister. Levine is the only family that mom has. The only one that sticks to her.
"I know you have a lot on your plate. I will leave you to handle it,’’ Rex remains silent through our conversation. I don’t know where his head is at. I don’t know what he is thinking. All I know is that I need to get into his head. The question is, what is it going to take to succeed at that?
"How are you feeling?’’ I lead him to a chair and he sits down gently. His eyes are on me, almost like he is completely focused on my face. The spark in them is still there. As long as that spark is there, he is the Rex I know.
"I don’t know, very weak and cold,’’ he rubs his hands together. I grab his hand in mine and squeeze it gently. A sigh escapes his lips "I don’t know what is happening. There are parts of my memory that are missing. I want to remember what happened this morning, but I can’t. It is so scary to me.’’
He is communicating with me.
That is a lot.
"I know. I just need to figure out what happened to you. Gyles said you were gone for a while in that motel and that was when your memory lapses started. So I think it has something to do with that."
He nods "Can you fix me?’’ he asks me meekly.
I want to tell him that there is nothing wrong with him. That he doesn’t need fixing but he actually needs help. I need to restore him back to his old self.
"I will make sure of that Baby, whatever it takes.’’
That is a promise and it might seem farfetched but I mean every word. I will get him back to himself, even if I have to do things the wrong way. The dark magic that I keep talking about. The one that everyone says is forbidden... if that is the way I have to save him.
Then I will.
Even if I end up losing myself.
Chapter 280: Major’s memory
Blue.
I am not getting anything from him. it is not like I expected this to be so easy. The spell didn’t work. There is a wall in his mind, blocking me from the things that I need. I can see everything else. The memories we all shared. All his fears, the past. I see it all but the one I need. I know for a fact that something happened to him because of all the spaces and jumps in his memory. It is like getting a key into his mind and being unable to enter the room you want to.
"Fuck,’’ I whine jumping out of the loop.
I open my eyes and he is watching me in hopes that I at least got what I need "It didn’t work,’’ I tell him honestly.
This is affecting him the most. He is the one that is being controlled. The one that is losing bits and pieces of himself. I am affected by association.
"Shit,’’ he breathes out as I walk over to him. my eyes remain on him as I grab both of his hands in mine.
"It’s going to be okay,’’ I tell him, in a way to stop the panic that will go on in his mind. I don’t know what I was expecting but I didn’t think I would get it all immediately I took a train to his mind. I at least thought there would be something—even if it was small, that would lead me to him.
"It’s not,’’ he shakes his head immediately. "I am dangerous. I will only end up hurting you all.’’ He adds.
I don’t want him thinking that way "You know you are strong enough to fight whatever this is. you have a wolf inside you. You have so much power and I need you to use it when you feel like you need to.’’
He shakes his head again "I don’t feel my wolf. I haven’t felt my wolf in a while,’’ he confesses.
I know how he must be feeling right now. when I was growing up, I didn’t have my wolf. I didn’t even know it existed and I felt the emptiness inside me. he knows about his wolf and he cant feel it. I can’t imagine how he must be feeling right now. unable to channel the energy that he needs right now.
"Rex, I am sorry that you are going through all this, but I need you to just hold on for me. I need you to stay strong.’’
It is easy to ask him to do this, I don’t know what else to say. I don’t know what else to do. All I can do is tell him that I will save him when I don’t even know what to do. "I don’t know if I can.’’ He tells me honestly.
I lean forward until my lips are on his forehead. He closes his eyes as I kiss him softly, wanting him to feel all I feel. I love him so much and I will never let anything happen to him.
Check major’s memory.
My wolf reminds me. I did the potion. I was supposed to, then chaos happened. It doesn’t seem like there is much to see in his mind. He knew I took his hair, so he knew what I was going to use it for and he didn’t seem bothered by it.
To everyone, I am a weak contender. There is no thought In their minds that I can defeat them or easily get to the bottom of this. they don’t see me as a threat, someone they need to look out for. I get why they would think that way.
"Come on, let’s get you back into my room,’’ I tell him. I don’t like the way he is. the quietness. The pain in his eyes. I wish there was something I could do to erase it all away but for now, I am stuck in this loop where I am completely useless.
"Okay." He manages in a low bellow.
I grab his hand and lead him back upstairs until we are in my room again. Gyles sits up on the bed immediately he notices us and I see the hope in his eyes. The kind of hope that I will crush in a split second "Any progress?’’ he asks immediately.
"None, he couldn’t get anything,’’ Rex beats me to an answer and I let out a heavy sigh.
He gets up from the bed and walks over to us, eyeing Rex with an intensity that should be grueling but only shows concern "What does that mean?’’ he questions. I wish I could give him an answer right now but I am wiped out completely.
"Means I am still dangerous. Means you should all probably keep an eye out for me,’’ he answers again. He has reached the phase of frustration. From his tone, I can tell. I don’t want him to give up right now because I will find a way.
I will get to the bottom of this.
"He is right though," I speak up for the first time "I need to go back down, but once I am done, I will be right up,’’ I add.
They both nod their heads but I see the hesitation in their eyes. This place doesn’t feel like home to them. This is just some strange place that they are stuck in and there is nothing I can do to make them feel better. The sooner I get to the bottom of this, the better it will be for all of us. I leave them in the room and walk back to the potion room, it is as empty as it was when I left. I guess Levine didn’t think to come back.
I grab the bottle that has the mixture of Major’s hair. The potion I made before shit hit the fan. Before I even had any clue on what was happening. The fact that this attack is so much worse than all the others, terrified me even more.
I place the potion in between my lips and sit down on the stool, waiting for its effect to take place. It is not as quick as Rex’s own but the moment I feel the chill, I close my eyes and take a deep breath as I am transported into the mind of one of my most hated people.
As the memories come about, I release steady breaths not liking what I see one bit.
