Chapter 286: The silent spell

Blue.

I lead Gyles out of the room and he is crying. I don’t know what happened while I was gone but the more I witness the sadness, the more sure I am of going with Mage.

"What happened?’’ I ask him as I lead him into one of the empty living rooms in the house. He sits down on the couch gently and I wipe the tears off his face.

"Promise you wouldn’t be upset with me,’’ he stutters and I already know that he has done something. Gyles is the kind of person that makes decisions without consulting other people involved. I already know not to expect too much from him. That is just who he is and I love him despite it all. I just need to keep him in check. Make sure that he doesn’t do more damage than we are already in. I don’t know what he has done now but seeing that Rex was in the room asleep is okay for me. As long as nothing happens to the two of them—I am happy.

"What did you do?’’ I ask him.

He looks away from me. I grab him by his chin until his eyes are back on mine "Don’t hide from me. Talk to me.’’ I tell him.

He takes a deep breath as I caress his face softly. I want him to always be able to talk to me. I want him to always know that he can trust me. No matter what happens. I will always be on his side. After this whole thing is sorted out. I am going to take them back to the community and we are going to complete the mating ritual. I will make sure the bond is complete.

All the hesitation from the past is gone. All the longing and hoping does not exist anymore. This thing started with uncertainty but Gyles is not the same person he was. There is no one that is more ready than him.

He closes his eyes for a second and then they are back open. He is watching me with this intensity that makes my heartache. I feel his pain. I know when he is hurting and right now, something happened to him.

"I tried to compel him," he speaks up and I watch him as I wait for him to explain. His silence is eerie.

So I ask "What do you mean by compelling him?’’

He sighs "Rex. I thought I could get him to remember with compulsion—my ability. I saw it in his eyes. I could swear he remembered everything."

I open my eyes wide shocked that he was even able to do that. I didn’t know he had that in him. There is a lot about Gyles that I don’t know. He is stronger than he makes himself to be. He has so much power in him. I want to explore every bit of him.

"What happened?’’

"He knows what happened but he is keeping it from me. He doesn’t want to tell me," he covers his face with his hands. I reach for him and pull his hands off wanting him to look at me. His eyes meet mine as I manage a faint smile. Just my way of being encouraging. I need him to calm down and just give me a couple of days to sort this out.

"Hey, it’s okay.’’ I try to assure him even though I am not even sure about this. I might be walking into my demise. Whatever I have agreed to do might just come and bite me in the ass. I might just end up at a loss for this decision but I will do it again in a heartbeat if it means that I will end up protecting the ones I love.

"It’s not okay. He is hurting. I am the one that caused all this,’’ he rambles.

I glare at him because I have told him not to blame himself for this. He might think that he is the one that caused this because he brought him here but whoever did this, because of me. It has nothing to do with him.

"This is not your fault. This was never your fault. Just let me handle this.’’

He furrows a brow "How are you going to handle this? What are you going to do?’’

I can’t answer him because I don’t know yet "Do you trust me?’’

He nods.

I cup his face in my palm and he closes his eyes "Trust me when I say I will make sure that nothing happens to the two of you. I love you more than anything on this earth. I will do anything to make sure that you don’t hurt. So give me time and I will make sure this is over.’’

He opens his eyes slowly as I lean closer until my lips are on him. A soft gasp escapes his lips as I feel the warmth from his touch. I deepen the kiss and push him against the couch. Maybe this is selfish of me, wanting to feel anything in this moment. Rex is so far gone that I don’t know how much more of this I can take but Gyles is still here. He needs me right now and I need him. I have to show him how much he means to me. His back hits the soft couch as I lean into him, pressing my body to his. He moans in my mouth as my tongue slips into his mouth in a slow but sensual caress.

"Please don’t leave me,’’ he breathes out in between kisses.

He is afraid right now and his fears are valid. I am so scared and this is the weaker part of me wanting to feel more of him. I grind into him and he winces. This makes me pull away from him abruptly.

"Are you okay?’’ I ask him.

He closes his eyes and I watch him as he rubs his stomach "I just hit the door,’’ he dismisses it but I am quick to reach for him. I raise his shirt up and there is a big bruise there.

"Why aren’t you healing?’’ I ask him.

He shrugs "I am just hungry. Maybe."

I haven’t even thought about him for the past two days. He is starving and I didn’t even think to take care of him.

"Fuck,’’ I run my hands through my hair. "You need blood,’’ I add.

He smiles "Kind of but I can handle a couple of days without it." he brushes it off like it is not a big deal. I take a deep breath because I know I have to get for him. he might act like he is okay but I see right through him and I know that he isn’t.

"I am going out, I will get some for you,’’ I tell him as my fingers trail on the bruise. It is a reddish-purple shade. I can feel him healing but he isn’t healing fast enough. He must be in a lot of pain right now and he is hiding it from me.

"Where are you going to?’’

"I found someone that might be able to help us."

He nods "How long are you going to be gone for?’’ he has this expression on his face that breaks my heart. My hand is still on his stomach, so I lean forward and plant a soft kiss on the bruise. He closes his eyes as a soft moan escapes his lips.

"A couple of hours at most."

I don’t know how long I will be gone for and I don’t know what is going to happen but all I have is determination and I will do my best to come back to them. I will do my best to protect them so that we can have the happy ending we deserve.

"Can you try and talk to him before you leave? Maybe he will tell you what he knows.’’

I nod and I go back to my room. He shuffles in the bed and I smile because now I know he is pretending to be asleep. "Hey,’’ I manage as I walk over to him.

He sits up from the bed as I walk over to him "How are you doing?’’

"I didn’t mean to hit him,’’ he blurts out.

I furrow my brows as I stop in front of the bed "Hit who?’’

"Gyles. I hurt him.’’

I sit down on the edge of the bed and he watches me as he regrets telling me. So he is the one that gave him the bruise "What are you feeling right now?’’

"Alone, confused, scared.’’ He tells me with honesty.

I don’t know what is going on in his head "Gyles said you remember who did it. Can you tell me what you remember?’’

He looks away from me "I want to but the words won’t come out.’’ he breathes out. I know what that means. Whoever did this to him must have put a silent spell on him in case he gets his memory back.

Fucking hell.

Chapter 287: Grateful

Beau.

The drive is short and as we get to the motel that we got the tip from Bells looks at me with a serious expression on her face "This is it?’’ she manages.

Fallon is someone that has been on everyone’s mind. The fact that he is still lurking around is something to be scared of. The only reason why I want to get this over with is because of the things I have going on. Lanis is pregnant and I don’t want the risk of Fallon lurking around when he gives birth. I don’t want to have to worry about their safety. I want the community to be a safe space for them. I want them to be able to roam around the compound when they get older. I don’t want that fear that will always exist as long as he is alive and maybe that is why I am being so temperamental about the whole thing.

I wasn’t supposed to leave Lanis alone but bringing him to this when he is in his condition wasn’t even an option. All I want is for him to be safe and having to worry about him will not be a good idea.

"I guess. There is the chance that this could be a false alarm,’’ I tell her because Fallon is smarter than we think. He was my father’s, right-hand man. He is older than us and he has been in hiding for a while now.

"We need to get that motherfucker and put him in his place." Bells doesn’t even want to be here. I can see it in her eyes. The exhaustion that comes from all the uncertainty. The fact that we don’t know when he will strike. We don’t even know what he has planned.

We both get down from the car and walk over to the building. A man walks over to us before we even enter. I get a whiff of his scent instantly—he is a wolf. "You are here, I am Buck, nice to meet you’’ he mutters with shaking hands. We both stop in front of him and I notice the nervousness from the way his hands are shaking. Something seems off. I don’t want to be the one that always has trust issues but I don’t even know if I can trust this person. I have to be wary of him.

"Where is he?’’ I manage to hide the uncertainty in my eyes.

He scratches the back of his neck nervously "He has been here for a couple of weeks. I didn’t know he was the one you were looking for,’’ he explains not even answering my question. All I want to know is what room number he is in. Buck is in a neighbouring community. It is about an hour away from the moonlight pack. Everyone in the neighbouring packs is aware of the hit on Fallon. Leaving the pack made him a rogue wolf and he is wanted dead or alive. We have got different tips from different people on sightings. He has been seen in so many places but this is the first time we are getting this close to him.

"Where is he?’’ I repeat. He brings out a key and hands it over to me. He is in room 106. He paid for a month. He explains even though I didn’t ask. Olin looks at me and I nod. There is no plan. We are just going to break into the room and make sure we get him. There is no back and forth on this. No time to dilly dally. We climb the stairs until we get to the front of the door with the escribing of the number. I look at Bells. Opening the door with a key seems like a waste of time but I do it anyway. His scent is strong. I will recognize it anywhere. After what he did, I have been on a lookout for him. I haven’t gotten the satisfaction of avenging my father’s death.

I still want him to pay for his sins. I open the door with so much force and I see him as he jumps up from the bed, completely shocked. He leaps up so fast but I am faster than him. All the energy that has been pent up from the frustration comes out. I react as fast as I grab him by the collar of his shirt. My grip is so tight. As I push him till his back hits the wall hard. I hear his groan as he tries to get up to his feet.

"Not so fast,’’ I warn him with a glare.

He closes his eyes and a smile sprawls to my face. Taking a closer look at him, he looks terrible. He has lost so much weight and his eyes are sunken in so bad. He seems like less of a man. The person that I remember him as is gone. I guess that is what happens when you leave your pack. Being a rogue wolf is not for the faint heart. He didn’t handle it well and there is a gladness in my heart.

"This is not the end,’’ he smiles like there is something he knows that I don’t. I watch him, unsure of what to say. To anybody, I have the upper hand right now. In this situation, I can say that I won.

"I am going to make sure that you don’t see sunlight for the rest of your life,’’ I tell him already feeling good about myself.

He responds with a laugh. I don’t want to think of worst-case scenarios. Like the fact that this might have been exactly what he wanted. This was an easy win and I know things aren’t always this easy. I want to use this as an opportunity to practice my optimism. Believe that not everything has to be a struggle. That every once in a while, things could be handed to me easily. There is the chance that it wouldn’t be so easy and I feel like the best thing to do is just kill him while we are ahead but I also know that it is not the right thing to do. I don’t believe in death sentences. I feel like he should pay for his crimes but I don’t want to be the one to be responsible for ending his life.

I drag him back to the car and both Olin and Bells look at me with so much happiness in their eyes. I know this is a relief to them too and as we get into the car with nags from him. I see the hatred in his eyes. This man is my uncle, he is my fucking blood. How is it that the people that are not related to me by blood have treated me better than he does?

The sun sets as we get to the gates of the community. My heart settles calmly against my chest. There is this calming feeling inside me. The fact that I returned back to Lanis with all the worries he had. I didn’t want to give in to his worries. I didn’t want anything to happen to me because I know that he will not be able to handle it right now. I wanted to create a safe space for him and with Fallon in our custody, I feel like I can give him that now. We all get down from the car at the same time and Olin looks at me "What are we doing with him?’’ he asks me. The fact that they all look up to me for answers is still overwhelming to me. Most times, I don’t even know what I am doing. I try to act like I do but I am sure they can tell.

"I think we should lock him up until a decision is made," I suggest and this gets a nod from him. Fallon is still watching me with that evil smile on his face. I don’t actually think he is an evil person—he was just greedy and couldn’t handle it. Once I get in through the gates. I see Lanis waiting in front of our house. His eyes are to the direction we are coming from. The expression on his face is scared. I already know how he is feeling and the fact that I am back unscathed is the best thing I could ask for. He waits for me and I walk to him with my heart racing. He doesn’t know what happened but just seeing me brings a smile to his face. The healers said he was going to be more emotional than usual, I see it as tears start to fall off his face.

"You’re back,’’ he manages.

I nod.

And I am not going anywhere.

He jumps into my arms and I hold him tightly. Appreciative to the gods for everything I have been given.

Chapter 288: Three sides to a story

Blue.

I leave Gyles and Rex with promised that I hope I can keep but am not sure if I will. I promised to come back. I promised to protect them and get them back home. These all seem plausible but I know they will be difficult. Right now I am playing a dangerous game that I don’t know if I will be able to get out of. The fact that I am following Major to this mysterious person that is going to help me is scaring me so much that I don’t even know what to think about it. The elders would not want me to use dark magic to eliminate dark magic. In their eyes, it is redundant and not the right call. I already know what they will say when they find out but all I care about it Gyles and Rex.

I am in front of the house as Mage parks his car and gets down from it "You ready?’’ he asks me with a faint smile. There is nothing to smile about but he seems excited to be doing this. I don’t know why.

"Yeah." I have no idea where we are going and I know this is not the best time to trust anyone. I mean, he could be leading me to a trap and I have that at the back of my mind, in case I need to attack. We start the journey and he says it is going to take about an hour to get to where we are going. The drive is awkward because I don’t even have anything to talk about with him. This man is a stranger to me. I don’t really have any relationship with anyone in the coven which will make walking away, easy.

"Your mother isn’t as good as you think,’ he breathes as he grips the steering wheel tightly. I look at him through the corner of his eyes. He is trying to convince me why forming an association against the chief of the coven is justified.

"She is still my mother,’’ I point out because he might think I will end up hating her or worse—joining them in their fight against her.

"I am not saying you should disown her. She will always be your mother, no matter all the bad things she does. I just want you to see things from our side. Understand that she might not be as great as you think.’’

I close my eyes and take a deep breath "I don’t think she is that great, just because she has her issues, doesn’t mean she deserves to die.’’ I tell him because I don’t like the fact that they will all go through all this to eliminate her.

"We didn’t want her dead,’’ he pauses and then I watch him as he swerves into a narrow road. There are bushes on both sides of the road. It seems like we are getting closer to wherever he is taking us to. The closer we get, the faster my heart races.

"This is not on us. Your mother has so many enemies. So many people that want her dead,’’ he adds. He doesn’t need to tell me this because it is all as clear as day to me. Enemies that I never knew existed. You see, growing up, I always thought she was admired. I mean, she has all these parties and everyone always shows up with smiles on their faces. I was never interested in the nooks and crannies of the coven. She would always beg me to get involved but I never wanted to. I don’t know what she could have done to make them all hate her but it must all be pretty bad.

"What did she do to you, to make you hate her so much,’’ I ask him because I want to make it personal. He is with the association but he must have joined for his own reasons. You don’t just join that kind of situation for no reason.

"It’s a long story,’’ he breathes out weakly.

I raise a brow "We have about thirty minutes right, if you summarize it, it could be enough.’’ I push him wanting to know the truth. I want to know the kinds of things she has done. Not the ones from the goddamn list they showed me. Killing people, extorting the members of the coven. All those things are just numbers in the list. I want to hear his story. The reason why he hates her so much.

He sighs loudly, I am watching him. His eyes never leave the road. He doesn’t even look at me as the words come out of his mouth. I watch him intently waiting for him to tell the story.

"It is not about what she did to me. More about what she did to someone close to me,’’ he breathes out so heavily. I can feel his pain in the sound of his voice. Makes me feel his pain even more. I don’t trust him—I don’t even trust anyone in this coven. Not even my own mother, so I know that there are always three sides to every story. I know that he will have his and my mother will have hers and the truth will always be there—lingering, unknown to everyone. I don’t usually just believe people when they say things. It is always easier that way. Not expecting anything from anyone.

"My wife was banished from the coven," he tells me quietly. I wait for him and he continues "She was wrongly accused of committing treachery. I knew Analise had it in for her. It was personal and she ended up winning in the fight."

Why is he still in the coven if his wife isn’t?

"She didn’t make it far. I agreed to leave with her, the day she was banished. I took an oath to always be loyal to the coven but she was my wife. I had to choose her."

He keeps saying was, which could only mean that she is dead now.

"You know, once you take the oath, you can’t leave the coven,’’ he tells me like this is something I don’t know. I have never taken the oath. I always knew I didn’t belong in the coven. It is not the way a home should feel.

Now I might be stuck here.

"The day we were supposed to meet up, she died in a fatal accident. There was no way she could have survived."

I close my eyes as he breathes out those words. I know there is more than he is telling me. The accident could have been an accident but he is assuming that somehow, my mother had something to do with it. Like I say, there are always three sides to every story.

His side doesn’t seem like the accurate one.

Chapter 289: Just need a break

Blue

He parks the car in the parking lot of the trailer park. We are on the bad side of town, just comparing this place to the estate is a milestone. I am used to living in the outskirts. Jules lives in the woods and I stayed with him in seclusion for a year plus. I know how it is to be alone but this place is bad. I just know the person will definitely be up to no good.

Is this a good idea?

My wolf asks me. I feel the hesitation deep down. I don’t know if this is a good idea but I am all out of ideas. I don’t know how to get them out of the mess that they are in because of me. If there was another way to do this. I would have done it.

"We’re here,’’ Mage tells me calmly. He doesn’t even look scared.

"How dangerous is the person we are here to see?’’ I ask him in a way that doesn’t make me sound too terrified. I might act tough like I have my shit together but I am far from that. Half the time, I don’t even know what the fuck I am doing.

He laughs at my question, almost like it is unwarranted "EM is not dangerous. He is just not like you and me,’’ he assures me as he gets down from the car. I follow him at his pace as he walks over to the door. The trailer is in the middle of other trailers. It looks old and tainted—like it could use some renovations. The door to the trailer opens before we even get close to it. An old man steps down from it and watches us.

He is dressed in a pair of black pants and a black t-shirt. His hair is white on his head and he has a full set of beards, you know the kind that joins with your mustache and hair. He looks straight out of a scary movie. One of his eyes is shut closed. He only has one good eye. If I was to just him on his appearance, I would say that he can’t help me but I don’t want to be too quick. I want to see what he has to offer before I cancel him.

"Mage, is that you?" he asks. His voice is deep and croaky. He looks to be about sixty.

Experience is usually the best remedy and he looks like he has a lot of experience. Mage walks closer to him and they embrace. I watch them with unsure of what to do "I brought a friend. We need your help.’’ he tells him once they pull apart. The man looks at me and his one good eye flinches as he analyses me. a smile sprawls up on his face.

"I know who you are,’’ he mutters calmly.

I furrow my brows with a faint smile. "You’re Jules’s son, aren’t you?’’ He breathes out as he adds. How does he know my father?

"How do you know my father,’’ At this point, Mage is looking at me with curiosity, which makes me think that he didn’t know before bringing me here.

The old man—Em, smiles warmly "I lead him to you. the only reason why you even know of him in the first place is because of me,’’

To him, this feels like an accomplishment. Like somehow, he did something that I should be thankful for. I don’t know the story of how Jules found me. All I know is that one day, he came to the coven and demanded to see me. This is not a story of me feeling like I was missing something. I didn’t go looking for him, I didn’t even know where to look. I would have lived my life never even knowing that he existed. The fact that I even met him in the first place is something I will always be grateful for. Just thinking about the life I lived before my Lycan side, makes me sad.

"Where are my manners, come in,’’ he grabs my hands and pulls me up the two steps into the small trailer house. My eyes go around the small room. Everything in this house is implicating. All his potions and book of spells are out on display. It seems to me like he doesn’t really invite people in. the fact that he is open to his magic just means there is a part of him that is nonchalant about it.

"Have a seat,’’ he tells us. Mage sits down on the only chair in this very tiny room. I feel like the walls are closing in on me. the longer I stay here, in this uncertain situation. I don’t know if he will be able to help me but I am willing to do anything. I don’t just want to know who hurt him. I want to be able to undo whatever was done to him.

The old man walks into a closed corner in the room and drags a foldable chair to me. I watch him as he places it next to me "Sit, sit, would you like something to drink?’’ he asks me.

We both shake our heads at the same time "No thank you,’’ I mutter obediently.

He smiles "So what can I do for you. the fact that mage brought you here means that you need my help for something."

I nod.

His smile widens like he didn’t expect anyone coming and asking for help. A book on the shelf calls out to my attention. Somehow, in the midst of all the potions and artifacts, it is the only one that shines. I don’t know if it is a good idea that I feel this way but I can’t help myself.

"Yes sir,’’ I breathe out, answering his question.

He nods his head and rubs his hands together "what happened?’’ he asks me curiously. I feel like this is the only excitement he has had in his life for a while. The fact that he is so willing to help me right now.

I close my eyes as I prepare to tell him everything. he watches me with an intense look as I explain everything to him. His eyes never leave my eyes. I talk and hope silently that he will be able to help me.

I just need a break.

Chapter 290: Strong enough to fight this.

Gyles.

I walk back to the room and Rex shuffles on the bed. He doesn’t want to talk to me, it seems like he has nothing o say to me. I know he is still there. Deep down, inside. The man that cares about me is lurking and begging me to come out. I want to bring him out, I have done a lot of mind reading and compulsion since I came back. I know how deep I can get into someone’s mind but somehow, it seems like he is blocking me out.

Blue said I should wait. He said he will figure things out and the fact that he is not telling us what he plans to do scares me. I felt the fear in him before he left. Whatever he plans on doing must not be good and I couldn’t stop him because I promised myself that I was going to trust him.

He thinks he can handle this on his own but I feel like it is something that we have to do together. we are three powerful people; he doesn’t need to shoulder this on his own.

"Stop staring at me,’’ I hear his voice as he interrupts my thoughts. I wasn’t staring at him; I had spaced out so fast that I didn’t even know I was looking at him.

I shake my head "I wasn’t staring at you,’’ I deter with an eye roll. I am pissed at him right now. the fact that he chose to hurt me. The fact that he would even do that to me still stings.

"Oh really?’’ he raises a brow and stands up from the bed. He ewalks over to me and I watch him as he stops in front of me.

I nod.

He smiles. he seems to be back to himself. when he is like this, it is easy to talk to him. I want to get a way to get around to it. "I am sorry,’’ he breathes out heavily. I lcose my eyes for a second as he rests his hands on my face. The rtpouch sends electricity down my spine, reminding me of how much I love him. Rex is still Rex, no matter what happens to him. he will always be the one person that made me feel at home in the community. When it felt like I lose teverything, he was there. He made me feel like I belonged and that made my heart his. I will always love him, no matter how many times he hurts me.

"Does it still hurt?’’ he asks. I open my eyes and he is watching me intently. There is a smile on his face, one that screams hurt. He is not happy right now, but he is trying to make me feel better.

"Not really,’’ I lie. I am still not healing as fast as I should. The lack of blood is affecting me a lot more than I thought it would.

"Can I see?’’ he asks.

I shake my head immediately. I don’t want him to feel bad about it. I don’t want him beating himself up for this. I just want him to get better. His hands slide away from my face and he is tugging at my shirt. I grab his hand in mine to stop him.

"Don’t,’’ I tell him firmly.

He sighs loudly but pulls his hands away from "I am losing you. I can feel it,’’ he confesses his emotions out loud.

I furrow my brows in confusion because I don’t even understand what he means by that. He continues "You hate me. I hurt you.’’

"You think I hate you?’’

He nods.

"Is it possible to hate you?’’

He shrugs like that question is one he doesn’t know the answer to. Rex could hurt everyone in the world. he could become a monster and I will still love him. I know who he is. the man I fell in love with and I know that he is kind-hearted. He would never hurt anyone intentionally and if they make him into a monster, I will be by his side until he comes back to me. I will never desert him.

"I can never hate you,’’ I tell him honestly. His eyes shift away from me. He can’t even look at me right now "You are everything to me. the light that shines so brightly on me. I will never think about you and associate hatred with it."

"I don’t know how to stop this. I don’t know how to stop feeling so dark,’’ he confesses. The fact that he is telling me this is progress.

Things are happening to him—things that he can’t say. you don’t need to use words all the time. You don’t need to say things out loud all the time.

We have something that no one else has.

A mind link.

One that connects us as mates together. I haven’t thought about it all through this. I need to get to his mind. A mind that is mine. as his mate, I have a key to his mind. One that was given to me the day I met him. I watch him as a smile sprawls up to my face. He creases his brows in confusion. I am pretty sure he doesn’t know why I am smiling but I feel like I have found a way to make things better. I think I have found a way to make things better.

"I know how to get in. I know how you can tell me all those unspoken words." I tell him excitedly.

"How?’’ he asks me confused.

I grab both of his hands in mine and "You are mine rex. no one is going to come in between you, me, and Blue. you should already know that.’’

A tear falls out of his eyes as the words leave my lips. This is my assurance to him. this is me telling him that I will always be on his side.

"It feels like I am slipping away from you guys." He tells me as I wipe the tears from his face. I don’t want him to be sad. I hate that some invisible force has come in between us. I hate that he is losing himself in this.

You have me. I am here. We don’t have to say anything. just show me how you feel.

I send him a mind link.

I want him to let me in.

He is strong enough to do this.
