Chapter 301: The one is control

Blue.

The moment I walk into the room, the first place I go to in my closet. I want to trust Gyles. I told him not to touch the book and I want to tryst that he listened to me but I also know that this will not be the first time he would do the exact opposite of what I tell him.

Gyles can’t be controlled, not because he can’t but because he chooses not to be controlled. He always has to do things his way. He doesn’t like to listen and the moment I see the book on the floor, I know he disobeyed me again. I didn’t want to be angry when I saw him in the dungeon. I don’t even know what was going on in his head. Most times, I don’t even understand him and how he acts. He acts like his actions have no repercussion. He behaves rashly and I don’t know how I will be able to handle him for the rest of my life. I don’t want to be in a relationship where I have to think about the next thing he will do. He is the complete opposite of Rex. he doesn’t think before he does and that will affect us a lot.

I leave him in the dungeon because I don’t even understand what he is saying. How is it even possible?

How does he even know? I walk out until I get the fresh air that will calm me down. I know he is following me but I don’t even want to talk to him right now. I keep walking completely ignoring the sounds of his footsteps. I shouldn’t be in my feels right now but my mind is in a fog. I don’t know how to feel about all that he said. I should have felt Rex. I was with him and I didn’t know. That makes me feel terrible.

I shouldn’t be thinking about the how, I should be figuring things out. Finding a way to find him.

"He is the one,’’ he whispers his voice shaking. He is scared that I will get upset with him and lash out. I am upset but I font even have words for him "I felt him, I know jhe is the one. He is scared and alone right now and he needs us.’’

I turn to him at his words, he is so sure of all this. he is so sure that he is the one. "because of the book?’’ I ask him.

He takes a deep breath "No, not because of the book. I didn’t use it. there was a pull, something led me to it but I didn’t use it."

I laugh "Something led you to the one thing that you wanted? You expect me to believe you?’’

He sighs "I know you don’t trust me and I know you might never trust me but you have to trust that Rex is as important to me as he is to you. all I am thinking about now is him. we need to help him before it is too late.’’

His words should encourage me but I can’t trust that this is the real deal "He doesn’t recognize us. Why doesn’t he?’’

"I don’t know, he is still entrapped." He explains.

I don’t know what to believe. At the end of it all, it makes sense. Levine had full control of him, why wouldn’t she just use him to do her dirty work. There is a possibility that he is the one in that cage. There is a chance but the fact that he got his information with the help of the book of dark magic just scares me and confuses me. there is nothing pure about the way he did this. he could be misled and he doesn’t even have a clue. He is just acting like everything is fine. Like there is no chance that this is a hoax.

"I don’t trust this,’’ I tell him honestly.

He nods "But you know Rex, you will feel his presence if you give this a chance. Be open to this and he will show you what you need to see.’’

My heart is racing against my chest because I know that I have to go back to the cell. I have to talk to him again. "Why don’t you listen G?’’ this is very hard for me. I am trying to get control of everything that is happening. I know I am being very controlling and disconnected from him but the coven makes me this way. I don’t want this to be my permanent home. I want to get away from all the drama in this place.

I want to be able to breathe.

"I don’t know, I try but I always end up fucking things up. I am not a good person,’’ he covers his face with his hands. I want him to think about his actions. I want him to know that he can’t always just act first and not think about the repercussions. I don’t know if I will ever be able to get into his head.

"I want you to go back to the community,’’ I tell him.

He uncovers his face and opens his eyes wide "No... I can’t. I won’t leave you and Rex. you need me right now.’’ he cries.

He is right. I do need him but I also don’t want to have to worry about him all through this. knowing that he is safe will help me find Rex and get to the bottom of all this faster. The emotions that are running through my veins are a distraction. He being here is a distraction. I am trying to talk to him and every time I think I am getting through to him, he does something entirely different.

You need him by your side.

My wolf tells me and I know that he is also a big source of strength. I know that having him by my side should be comforting but that is not the case with Gyles. He is more of a burden than help. He is too forward and impulsive and I can’t handle him at the same time worry about finding Rex.

"I won’t do anything again. I will be on my best behavior. Please don’t let me go back without rex,’’ he grabs my hands in his and pulls me closer to him. the touch sends chills down my spine. Just contact with him and I am losing track of things.

"This is not about you Gyles. This is about the connection you have with the book. You said it led you to it.’’

He nods.

"That is a problem. I don’t want you around it. I don’t want you anywhere near this drama,’’ I add.

He shakes his head "Take the book away. Don’t send me away. This is not fair."

Right now, he is acting childish. He is throwing a tantrum and I don’t know how to handle this. "Please Blue. don’t shut me out because of my mistakes,’’ he begs.

The fact that we have gone through this so many times, tells me that there will be many more. He will apologize for doing things and then do other things that will end up being worse. The community is the best place for him. he belongs there. The outside world isn’t fit for him. there are just too many dangers that he would eventually fall prey to and I need to be able to put him in check.

"Go back to the room, stay there until I get back,’’ I tell him with a glare, slowly letting go of his hands. He grabs me again and it is not like I expected him to accept this easily. He is too stubborn, so nothing will ever be easy with him.

Except loving him.

My wolf reminds me, somehow letting me know how I feel about him. if Gyles wasn’t chosen for me—would I have chosen him for myself?

I don’t know.

"No,’’ he tells me.

I frown "No?’’

He nods "I want to do this with you. I want to help you. I want to be by your side,’’ tears well up in his eyes.

He is being dramatic.

"You have helped enough. I will take over from here,’’ I tell him.

He shakes his head "No, I will not go.’’

He is basically using that tone where he is telling me that I am not the boss of him. I reach for him and he doesn’t push me away. My eyes are cold right now "You will go and I am serious,’’ I tell him as I grab his arm a little too rough.

He doesn’t flinch. He is trying to show me dominance but I will not let him think he is in any way in control in this relationship. "Gyles, I will send you to the community on my own if I have to. Don’t make this difficult."

I beg him.

He shakes his head "You are not the one that calls the shots. You are not the only Alpha here,’’ he reminds me and I let go of him immediately. I want to win this fight but things with Gyles are not easy and I don’t even have the energy right now.

"Go to the room,’’ I command him and this time, he obeys. I watch him as he walks away from me and for the first time in my life, I don’t know how to handle someone.

Fuck.

Chapter 302: Together

Blue.

Once he is out of my sight, I go back in the direction of the dungeon. The only place I should be in right now. Gyles seems to think Rex is somehow inside Levine. I know Rex, I know Levine, but I have to listen to him. he is not listening to me and it seems like there is nothing I can do. There is no way to control him. I get to the cell and she is seated on the floor. Her hands are across her legs. She looks up immediately she sees men but her expression doesn’t change. The fact that she seems so dazed all the time, should be a concern. It almost feels like she doesn’t even know what is happening.

Almost like she is not really here.

"Can we talk?’’ I ask.

Her eyes stay on me but she doesn’t answer—it is not like I expected an answer from her. I just wish things would be easier. I just wish my wolf would feel him. I just want all this to end already. I walk back to the guard on duty "I need the key,’’ I tell him calmly. He doesn’t argue with me, he just hands me the sole key for her cage. I walk back to the cage and she is still watching me.

"I am going to come in, I promise I just want to talk,’’ I tell her. I don’t want to be a threat to her. I just want to figure some things out and this cage seems like a wall. There is this unspoken distance. No matter how much I try to reach out, I can’t get through to her.

I walk into the cell and she doesn’t even respond. Her eyes never waver from me and even though it seems like she is watching me, it also seems like she is not really here. Lost in some kind of trance.

"Why did you do it, Levine?’’ I manage, I guess I have to act like I am interested in her motives. If this is really Rex, then eventually, something should show. Right now, she just looks like a dazed Levine.

He is entrapped.

Gyles’s voice comes into my head. Thinking about the way he knew; I find it really hard to believe that the book would just give him the information so freely. There is always a price to pay. He just gave in so easily because of his desperation.

Isn’t that what you were going to do?

My wolf asks me calmly. Yes, I was going to use the book. It was going to be my last resort. Maybe that makes me a hypocrite but I didn’t and Gyles did.

He said he didn’t.

I don’t know whose side my wolf is on.

"You have to talk to me. I can’t help you if you won’t give me a chance,’’ I am at a far end of the cage, but close enough to see her and her expressions. It doesn’t seem like she wants to even talk to me.

’She was your sister,’’ I continue. I don’t know what I am doing. maybe I am stalling. There is supposed to be a feeling. I am waiting for that hit. The one that Gyles mentioned. Right now, I don’t feel anything.

"You have to talk to me. I cant help you if you don’t,’’ I repeat those words again. I want her to think that I want to help. I don’t care about Levine and the fact that she killed my mother just makes her my enemy. I don’t know what kind of person my mother was. All I know is, the moment, she ended her life, she became my enemy.

If this is Rex, then he is the one that killed her.

My wolf reminds me.

This is all confusing. Rex was the one that attacked her the first time and now there is a probability that he did it again. he will never forgive himself if he finds out that he is responsible for her death.

"Help me?’’ she finally speaks up. her voice is low and shaking. She sounds different but also the same. I can’t really explain it but in that split second, I start to think that maybe Gyles was right. There is no way she would be so dazed.

"Yes, Levine. I want to help you,’’ I manage with that lie. I don’t know if she believes me but a sigh escapes her lips.

"I don’t know what is happening,’’ he cries, for the first time, I see the fear in her eyes. She is being sincere.

"Help me,’’ she repeats, this time, not as a question. I go on my knees and she watches me quietly. I don’t know what I am doing but slowly, I stretch my hands out and reach for her face. I just want to know. I need to know. I touch her face and her eyes close immediately. this should feel wrong but for the first time, it feels completely right. I haven’t had this form of closure since I came back to the coven. I have never been surer about anything as I am at this moment. The electricity that only comes from touching him. the certainty as my heart races a mile a minute.

"Rex,’’ I breathe out, it feels like I have been running a marathon and I have finally reached the finish line. His eyes flash open and recognition flashes in his pupils. For a second, it feels like he knows it’s me. for a second, he remembers but it is gone so fast that I can’t even dwell on it. he turns away from me and I get up from the floor and walk to the exit of the cage.

Everything becomes clear suddenly. She wants him to suffer for her crimes. In this scenario, he is the scapegoat. The one that would be executed in her stead. I will not let that happen. There is no way in hell. Before I leave, I face her and she watches me "I will get you out of this Rex, I promise."

Going back to my room, Gyles is on the bed but he seems to be spaced out. He doesn’t notice me as I walk in front of him. I get on my knees in front of him and press my lips to his immediately. This gets him out of his trance.

"What was that for?’’ he asks confused. The last conversation we had wasn’t the greatest but I am grateful for him. I am grateful for all the things he has done. His stubbornness might have caused a lot of damage but he has also helped.

"We need to figure out a way to get him out of whatever he is into...." I pause and he waits for me to continue "Together Gyles. We have to do this together.’’

We need to start acting like mates. I need to trust him more and I need him to trust me too. Maybe this is our way to get closer and understand each other.

Chapter 303: Do right by you

Gyles.

I don’t know what happened but I am pretty sure he felt him. I know Blue, he might act stuck up and controlling sometimes but I have come to love him and all that he is. I will do anything for him and Rex and maybe that is my problem sometimes. The fact that I will DO ANYTHING.

The loyalty I have is probably why I keep messing things up. I haven’t been the easiest person to have by his side but I want things to change and I know I keep saying that but maybe this time will be different. I just need to communicate with him more. I need to be able to tell him things before I take action. I have this thing where I act first. I know it is not such a good thing but I have always been this way. I have always been terrible at communicating and thinking rationally. I want to change but changing is difficult.

"You felt him.’’

He looks away from me. he is still in front of me, on his knees. His eyes are red and for the first time. I look at him—like really look at him. I see how tired he is. all this must be taking a toll on him. I know how he feels. I am in the same shoes. I want this to all end.

I reach for him and cup his face in my palms. He lets out a soft breath, I feel all of him in this moment and I wish I could take his pain away "We can get him back,’’ I manage. I am not sure how to do that but we need to get him back to his senses first. Whatever Levine did to him must be putting him in a trance. He needs to snap out of it before we can even start to think of how to get him out.

He sighs "How?

"He needs to be aware of us first,’’ I tell him.

He nods, my hand is still on his face. I don’t want to let go and it seems like he doesn’t want to either. "He doesn’t remember us. How do we get him to remember?’’

Blue is forgetting who he is. when I first met him, I saw him as wise and strong. He could tell and do so many things. Things that I didn’t even know were possible. He literally has magic inside him. there should be spells and potions to get him out of this trance. There should be a way to get him out.

"You have a gift. One that I don’t. you need to use it,’’ I tell him in an attempt to remind him of who he really is. he closes his eyes and then opens it.

"There is a lot of dark magic involved. One that I am not sure I am strong enough to fight.’’

I nod "just because your magic is pure doesn’t mean it isn’t strong enough. You haven’t even tried. Try first like you have been telling me." I remind him of all the things he has said.

"It is not that easy. I am at a dead end.’’ He confesses and I know it must be hard for him. this must all be taking a toll on him and I don’t even know how to get him out of this funk.

He slowly stands up from the floor and sits down next to me "I hate that he is locked up. I hate that there is nothing I can do to get him out of that cage."

He seems to be forgetting that he is standing in as the leader of the coven. He can take charge. Make Rex feel more like the person we know and less like the monster everyone thinks he is. "You have the power to get him out of the cage. Get him to see that you are not a threat, help him remember." I remind him of just how great he is. he needs to start seeing himself in a different light. Somehow, Blue has a lot going on. He has been trying to act tough in front of us—I completely get that. he didn’t want to show weakness in front of us. We are supposed to adore him but at the end of it all. We have to be transparent to each other. We have to trust each other.

"I do, I should get him out of the cage,’’ he smiles faintly and I like I am the one encouraging him.

"We have to keep an eye out for him though. We can’t let him wander away from our grasps like the last time.’’

He nods and gets up from the bed. "I will order them to bring him back to the house. We will keep him in one of the empty rooms, is that okay?’’ he asks me, almost like he is seeking my advice. I nod because it seems like a good enough plan. I just don’t want things to backfire like they have been doing all this time.

"I am sorry about everything Gyles. I am sorry for being so controlling and unsupportive. I have been a terrible mate,’’ he tells me. my heart races against my chest because I feel like I am the one that should keep apologizing to him. I am the one that has messed a lot of things up.

"Can we start a new slate? Do things differently?’’ I ask him as I stand up from the bed and face him. His eyes stay on mine as he nods incessantly.

"I promise to do better. I promise to do right by you and Rex. I won’t fail you guys again.’’

His promise is sincere. I know that we have had a lot of rough patches but I plan on making things right. I want to do right by him too—and Rex. they are all that matters to me.

"I will get him to the room next to this one. Can you stay with him?’’

I nod.

He smiles. "I want to go back to the library and do some research. There must be a way to reverse this cloaking spell she put on him. he is not in his own skin and I have to find a way to get him back to his old self. I can’t do it.’’

His newfound confidence is comforting to me.

We can make this work.

Chapter 304: Progress

Gyles.

Blue gets Rex into the next room and tells me to stay with him. It was my idea in the first place to have him out of that cell in the first place. I don’t want him to feel like a prisoner. To him, he is the bad guy—even though he doesn’t even know what is going on. We are in the spare bedroom next to Blue’s room. The room is empty except for a bed and a small desk and chair in the corner. This feels weird because I want to talk to him but he has a different face and he doesn’t even look at me once.

"Rex,’’ I call his name in hopes that this will jog his memories or something. He doesn’t look up from the bed. He is dressed in the clothes Levine had on. This is totally weird. He is a different person but when I look at him, I see the person he really is inside. I see Rex. His curly hair, the glasses that always fall to his nose. I see his shy smile and his deep brown eyes. I see the man I love and not this evil witch. I want him to come back, I need him to come back.

"I know you are in there, deep down, I know you can hear me,’’ I continue. His eyes never leave the bed. He doesn’t even look up as I talk to him. I take a deep breath because I knew it wouldn’t be easy. Getting through to him cannot be easy.

I get up from the chair and he raises his head finally and looks at me. He is probably terrified of me and thinks I want to hurt him. I walk over to the bed and he doesn’t fight me. There is just that radio silence that he has had for the last hour. "I know you are confused right now. This is all confusing to me too. I don’t know why this is happening but I want to help. I want you back,’’ I tell him from the bottom of my heart.

He looks away from me again and I sigh out in frustration. This is hard because he is not even communicating. He is just staring and being silent. If he would just talk to me, everything would be okay.

I hear his stomach grumble and he looks up at me, almost like in hopes that I didn’t catch that "Are you hungry?’’ I ask him with a smile.

He looks away from me in embarrassment. My smile widens "You love meat, should I get some for you?’’ I ask him.

He remains quiet. I get up from the bed and walk in the direction of the door. I am not familiar with the places in the house. I haven’t even been to the kitchen but he is hungry. I text Blue and he responds immediately.

I will be there in five minutes.

He told me not to leave him alone. I don’t want to disobey blue right now because we are in a good place right now. A clean slate, like he said. I want to try and be what he needs right now. He needs someone that wouldn’t be stubborn, who wouldn’t disobey him—someone that will help him.

I close the door and stand in front of it with my phone in my grasp. A message pops up from Alanis. I haven’t spoken to Alanis since I left the community, so seeing his message means that Beau must have told him of the things that are going on.

Alanis: You okay?

I look at the message, unsure of how to respond. Am I okay? I haven’t been okay for a long time. My heart has had this weight. Something that keeps pulling me. A force that I have been unable to let go of. Lanis is the only one that I have told my insecurities. I just feel at ease with him.

Not really.

I reply to him. My phone starts to ring immediately and I see his name on the screen. "Hey,’’ I manage in a low rumble. I am still outside the door. I don’t want to leave in case. I have to do things right this time.

"How are you holding up?’’ he asks concerned.

I don’t have the answer to that question because I am in a daze. Everything that has happened doesn’t feel real to me. "I don’t know. I guess I just want to come back home.’’

"You know you are always welcome back, have you found him?’’

"Yes,’’ I tell him, it hasn’t been confirmed but I feel like there is hope. In my heart. He is the one, I know it for sure.

"You know this is just a minor setback. Things will get back to normal."

He sounds so sure, I don’t know if he is right "Nothing good ever happens to me. I am stuck in my own hell.’’

"You can’t say that. You have two people that love you—two people that will always love you. That is all that matters. In time, you will find that happiness that you think you have been denied. Just be patient."

I hope he is right because I want that state of bliss. That sensation that is called happiness to take over me. I want it all. I see Blue as he walks to us and he smiles warmly. I like this space we are in. for the first time since I met him, I feel him coming to me. He has a container with him.

Food for Rex.

"I gotta go now, thank you for everything Alanis.’’

I end the call just as Blue stops in front of me "How is the research going?’’

He sighs "I haven’t found anything. The cloaking spell is a permanent spell. I don’t know if there is anything on reversing it."

"But you’re going to keep checking?’’ I ask him.

He nods "I might have to go and see Em,’’ he tells me.

Em, the one that gave him the book. Which just means he might have to try the dark magic at the end. I have been in support of it—I just want this done at all costs. I don’t like that he is suffering.

"I am not opposed to it," I tell him.

He runs his hands through his hair "Let me use the rest of the day to see if there is anything. We might just end up taking him to see Em. I just wish he would remember us at least.’’

"Okay," I tell him as I collect the food and walk into the room.

Levine/Rex looks up at me as I place the tray in front of him. His eyes bore into mine but he remains silent "Food," I tell him as I drop the container next to him. There is a couple of steaks inside and rice. This should be enough to give him some energy. For a second, he just watches me but slowly, he reaches for the food and a smile sprawls to my face.

"Thank you,’’ he mutters and my smile widens.

Progress.

Chapter 305: Confrontation

Blue.

It has been hours since I starting this research trial. I haven’t seen anything important that might help us. I am at the end of the roads right now. All out of option. The door opens and I see Major as he stands in front of me, unsure if he should enter. I manage a faint smile because their association helped me get closer to the truth. Even if they didn’t actually give me much. Major has always been someone that I never got along with. He has always been a jerk to me.

"Come in,’’ I stand up from the stool. He walks in and I watch him as he stops in front of the table.

"I heard about Levine,’’ he manages. I know there is a reason why he is here but I just don’t know what it is.

"Yes," I breathe out because I haven’t really accepted that she is such a bad person. Somehow, I don’t understand how she could hurt her own blood. It makes no sense to me. My mother might have been a terrible person—like they all say but she didn’t deserve to be killed by her own family.

"There is no way she did this,’’ he tells me, shaking his head in disbelief.

Everyone is free to have their own opinion. Everyone is free to believe what they want but all I know that Levine is still missing and Rex has taken her place. Levine might not be the monster that I think she is right now but I can’t think about all that until I get Rex back.

"Is she the leader of your association?’’ I ask him because that has been bothering me for a while. They didn’t want to disclose when I asked them, but now that it is known that she is the one responsible, then I feel like they should have known something, anything. Like the places, she could have been.

"I can’t say,’’ He looks away from me. I see the fear in his eyes before they dart away from me. Whatever he is involved with, might not be all that he expected.

"I am not the bad guy here. I am not going to use whatever you say against you,’’ I assure him.

He scoffs "What makes you different from Analise. You are her son.’’

No one is going to trust me in this coven if they think I am like her. I don’t know what she has done—fuck, I don’t even want to know. I would like to keep the ignorance. I don’t want to think of her and think that she was a bad person. She might not have been the greatest mother but she was there. She was the only one I knew growing up and I have to think about the good memories and not focus on the bad.

"I am not like her. I am my own person. I don’t care about the power that comes with this title. I don’t want you to think I am not approachable."

He sighs "I know that she didn’t do this. She was on our side and we didn’t plan on murdering anyone,’’ he blurts out, finally opening up to me.

I take a deep breath because I have always felt like there could be more. Almost like she is not alone in whatever this is. If she was involved with someone else, that would mean they are still both out there. Getting Rex back to his true form will not stop all that is happening. I need to fight them with the same magic that they are using.

"Could she have gone rogue?’’ I ask.

He shakes his head "No way. Levine had the purest heart. She would have never hurt Analise—her own sister." He tells me. "We planned the first attack. We wanted to scare her but the poison wasn’t lethal. We knew she wouldn’t die with it.’’

So they are the reason why I came back to the coven. They are the ones that made me come back. If they hadn’t done what they did. I would have still been in the community—I would have still been in my love bubble, figuring out the dynamics of my relationship. I want to be angry with him. Blame this all on him but at the end of it all—it is not his fault. Someone else would have ended up hurting her—if all the things they keep saying about her are true. Then she had so many enemies. So many people that wanted her dead.

"What did you think would happen after poisoning her?"

He is still standing in front of me "We knew you would have to come back. We wanted you to come back. Levine strongly believed that you would be the light that could save us all.’’

Huh?

He just said that I was like her. Did they expect me to take over from her? Do they really want me as their chief?

This is all so confusing and I don’t know how much more of this I can take.

"Me? The half breed? The one that you all hate?’’ I have to ask and maybe this is me being petty as fuck. Maybe I have always carried this resentment all my life.

"We never hated you,’’ he tells me.

I roll my eyes on reflex "Major, I didn’t forget. These memories are still there. Don’t act like you don’t remember how you treated me growing up.’’

"I was a jerk but I never hated you,’’ he comes closer and I sigh. I don’t know what this is but I don’t care for it one bit.

"You need me now. You are desperate. That is why you are spewing these lies.’’

He shakes his head "I am far from desperate. I joined the association because of Eva. I haven’t had any problems with your mother. I am from an influential family, Analise never had a hold on me.’’ I don’t know why he is explaining to me. I don’t care about any of them.

"What can I even do for you?’’

He sighs "I want to talk to Levine. I need to understand what happened.’’

How do I even tell him that Levine is not the one with us? How do I explain the messed up situation to him? I don’t even trusty him and I know for a fact that he doesn’t trust me either.

"I am not your enemy. I am not here with some vindictive plan. I just need to make things right. I know Levine and I know that she is not the monster that you think she is." he is watching me, waiting for a response.

"I don’t have Levine,’’ I confess.

I guess I will find out soon enough if he is to be trusted.
