Chapter 601: The calm after the storm

Gyles

It is over.

A couple of hours have passed since the burning but Blue has been quiet all through the day. Darrien has already set out for the community. I knew he wasn’t going to wait for us. His whole mind and body were fixed on getting back to Jabi and I understand how he feels. I mean, without him, we wouldn’t have even been able to do shit.

We are all in his room. Together but somehow, it seems like everything is just registering into his mind. In moments like this, it is best to let the person deal with it on their own. I know that much but I really want to be there for him.

Major is handling everything that has to do with the coven. I mean, it is the best thing. Blue doesn’t want to have anything to do with this place and Analise’s death just seals the deal.

"Hey,’’ I walk over to the bed, Rex looks up at me first even though my sole attention is on Blue. He is lying down on the bed. His body is all healed up from the bruises of earlier—same as me. Whatever Analise did to us must have worn off after her death. I still can’t believe that she is actually gone. For the first time since we got here, I feel like I can finally breathe.

My eyes look up at Eleanor, she is watching me with this look of dismay. I know we have to still deal with her and everything else. I don’t know what we need to do though.

"Blue,’’ I call his name again and this time, he looks up at me slowly. I watch him as he slowly manages to sit up on the bed. I want to reach out to him and hold him. I wish I could make him feel better but I also know that this can’t be on me. He has to deal with this on his own.

Rex is on the bed, next to him but it doesn’t look like that is making him feel any better.

I reach for Blue, slowly pressing my palm on his cheek and he doesn’t fight me or push me away. I watch him as he closes his eyes gently, taking steady breaths. I am touching him for my own pleasure. I want to be closer to him, I don’t know if it is working. In less than a second, I feel his hand on mine and this gives me a kind of relief that I didn’t know I needed. His hands are warm, unlike mine. I feel my heart thudding excessively against my chest as he pulls me closer and into his arms. Maybe he is not the only one that needed this.

I thought he was the only one that felt all the pressure from what happened but having him hold me, is doing things that I didn’t know I even needed in the first place. We almost died, for a while, I almost gave up. I didn’t think that we would come out of the mess that I had caused. I silently blamed myself when we were alone in that room because it was my fault. I had pushed and pushed. I made us come back here and I couldn’t even do anything to protect them.

I risked my happiness, just to believe that I was a good person. After the kind of life I had led, I wanted to do better. I wanted to be a better person and I ended up risking the most important people in my life, to prove something that I didn’t even need to.

I don’t know when the tears start to fall but the minute I feel Rex on me, the embrace is complete. The two of them in my arms.

It is a bliss that I don’t ever want to let go of.

There are no words. We don’t even have to say anything. After the storm, this is the calm moment that we have and we are allowed to let it out. I literally owe my life to Rex. He is the one that saved us. He is the one that was strong.

The person I called a coward.

"I am so sorry,’’ I cry into their arms.

They know what I am talking about because I feel them just as they can feel me. Everything they feel at this moment, I feel it too.

The relief, the pain. All the mixed emotions that are looming over us. I don’t know how long I stay in their arms but a knock on the door comes through loudly.

I stand up as I detach from them but this time, I don’t feel empty. I feel like we can finally focus on us and leave the problems behind us.

Once the door is open, Major manages a smile "Hey," he states.

He looks over my shoulders and to Blue and Rex. They are seated on the bed. Their eyes fixed on us. "I need to talk to you for a second,’’ he calls over to Blue. I move away from the door so that he can enter the room and he doesn’t even hesitate.

"That room you were talking about, I found it but I think you need to see something,’’ he breathes out.

My heart stops for a second because I start to worry. Eleanor is next to me again, I don’t know why she is still here but I assumed that killing her would set them all free but it doesn’t seem like that has happened which means there are still things to do.

"What is it?’’ Blue asks him immediately, slowly standing up from the bed. He is dressed in a fresh pair of clothes. His hair is packed up in a bun.

The exhaustion in his eyes is obvious but we are all exhausted.

"I think this is something you need to see,’’ he tells him.

We all look at each other as curiosity gets to us.

What could it be?

Chapter 602: The past is the past

Darrien

The drive home feels like an eternity. My whole body is aching from being away from Jabi for this long. The only time I have been away from him was when that bastard Lenny took him. This time is different because I was actually helping people. Thinking about it, it is a good thing that I came to pick Rex up.

Those people wouldn’t have been able to survive things without the help of Amber.

Now I feel like I am indebted to her even though that is something that I have always dreaded. I haven’t even told Jabi that I was coming home and I know that it would be late at night by the time I actually do get to the community, so he would probably be sleeping.

The sky is foggy as I step on the gas, wishing my car could go faster than it is going right now. I am already over the speed limit but it feels like it is not fast enough. I hear my phone ring and my eyes dart to it—In case it is a call from my baby. Amber’s name pops up on the screen and I let out a heavy sigh because I know I will have to answer it.

Now we are at this place in our lives where I have to pick up her calls. I know she is probably just calling to see if things went well—there is no doubt in my mind that she knows things went well. She just wants it to come from me and that is why there is so much dread in my heart.

I slide through the answer on the screen and her voice speaks out "Darrien,’’ she calls my name softly. There was a time when I would crave her voice, a time when her voice was all I would need to get through the day. Now, I just feel pity, remorse.

Nothing more.

"Things went well I take it,’’ she manages. As I said, she already knows. Word must have got out by now, so there really is no need for her to call me.

"Yeah, thank you a lot."

The other end of the line is silent for a couple of seconds and I clutch the steering wheel as I speed up. I need to get home. I need the remedy that is Jabi. The only man I love. The one that makes me complete.

I need to nip this thing with Amber in the bud. I don’t know what it is but I need to make things clear. There is no way she even thinks that we have a shot in hell. She knows what it means to find a mate. There was a time where she wanted to block me from ever finding my mate. She wanted to use magic because she was afraid that I would leave her.

I have been through so much with Amber and for the best part of me, there was a time that she made me happy.

Now, all I feel for her is pity.

"Can I see you?’’ she asks.

When I needed her to help us in the coven. This question was okay but now, I don’t think so. I don’t think it is a good idea for her to come to me right now because I don’t like the way she sounds. There is pain etched in her voice.

Pain that I am probably causing.

"I don’t think it is a good idea,’’ I tell her honestly.

She sighs into the phone "Because you don’t need me anymore?’’ she asks.

"Because you don’t need me anymore.’’ I counterattack.

It has been years since I last saw her. It has been years since I last heard from her and she has been fine. She used to tell me how she couldn’t survive without me. How she would die if I ever left her but she is still alive, she is still strong and beautiful, all those her threats never came to pass.

"I missed you, I know you don’t feel the same but you have to know that did."

This is the part I knew would happen but I don’t regret reaching out to her because I needed her to help me. I wouldn’t have been able to find Jabi without her and I can’t have any regrets.

"I am not asking you to take me back, I know how impossible that is, you found your person and there is no going back from that but I just miss you.’’

I really don’t understand why we are even having this conversation but it seems like something that she needs to say. Something that maybe she wants me to hear.

"Okay Amber, I give you permission, come to me.’’

I hope I won’t have regrets in letting her in right now but I want her to get her to say. I didn’t give her a chance when I left her all those years ago, so now the least I can do is listen to her. The least I can do is give her a chance to let go properly.

I might come to regret this but I know that this is something that I need to do.

Amber doesn’t hesitate and in a split second, she is next to me in the passenger seat of my car. The light that comes whenever this happens, erupt and I am glancing at her from the corner of my eyes.

I feel her all around the car, I feel something that I have never felt when it comes to her and it is not something that I like.

"Why are you really here?’’ I ask her, I want this meeting to be short and to the point.

I don’t want to drag this because it shouldn’t even be happening in the first place "Are you going to disappear again?’’ she asks me.

Yes, I left her but if she wanted to find me, she could have. She let me go because she knew there was no point in holding on. Just like she knows right now, there is no point holding on because just like the last time, I am too far gone.

There is no going back.

The past is the past.

Chapter 603: Rehashing the past

Darrien

"You hate me,’’ she blurts out.

I don’t hate her. I hate the person that I was with her. There is a difference but also no point in explaining things to her.

"I deserve this don’t I?’’ she asks calmly.

What exactly is she fishing for?

"You have to be here for a reason Amber unless I don’t see the point of all this. You know I have a link now. I don’t want to have to explain to him why you are lingering around me. I don’t even want to talk to him about you because that life is one that I don’t want to ever remember."

"You want to throw away our history like it never happened. That is not fair,’’ she manages. I can’t explain to her why I think that it is for the best.

Why she even wants to remember those times baffle me.

When someone talks about toxicity in a relationship, I would like to think that our relationship was as toxic as it could get. Yeah, there are always times in a relationship that you could think back to and smile but I don’t have those times because I think about the things that happened before those good times and it makes me sick to my stomach.

I hate her because of the way she used to make me feel. I don’t want to hate her but that is the only thing that I feel for her. There is no aorta of love left inside me and I don’t know why she can’t even just understand how I feel.

"We were never going anywhere and you know it."

She nods "We were happy."

I look at her with my brows creased in confusion. Maybe her definition of happiness and mine are different but the only happiness I know is with Jabi. He makes me feel the things that I always knew I needed but never ever felt. He is a different kind of love that should be experienced, not talked about.

I am happy and she is not going to come here and ruin that for me.

"We weren’t happy Amber and you know it. What we had should have never happened. We brought out the worst in each other.’’

She shakes her head, I can see that she is in denial. Makes me think that there is no trying to convince her "We were D, you know it. I know it. Just because we weren’t meant to be, doesn’t mean we weren’t.’’

I turn to her, taking my eyes off the road for a second "What is the point of this, why are you trying to convince me that we were happy?’’

I want to know what is going on in her head. She must have a reason for this and that is all I want to know.

"You left with no word, in the middle of the night. You didn’t want me to find you.’’ she cries, this is what she wants to talk about? Really?

"We were bound to break up, I just did it faster than you thought."

"Why? We had a deal, if you ever found your link, I would let you go. Why did you leave on your own?" she wants me to answer this.

I don’t want to answer her.

"Just tell me the truth. Tell me what changed. You keep saying that we weren’t happy but I know we were. I know that you loved me even though you don’t want to admit it to yourself now.’ she pauses, I look at her as she continues "Just tell me why you left.’’

Why I left?

I have numerous reasons as to why I left.

My family hated her.

They knew she was bad for me—I knew she was bad for me but in my rebellious phase, I wanted to prove that I didn’t need a mate. I didn’t need to forces in play to tell me who to end up with. I chose her because she was beautiful, she gave me a kind of excitement I craved. The excitement turned into danger.

I hate who I was.

I hate all the people I hurt because of her and I cannot take it back. I can only try to be better but she doesn’t even see that we did wrong and we shouldn’t have even been together in the first place.

She can’t see the evil that she brought with her.

"You know why I left. Why do you have to hear it from me?"

She sighs "Just tell me. Be honest and tell me the truth."

I don’t want to say this but it seems like this is something that she needs to hear. Deep down, she knows why I left. She knew what she was doing?

She might act like she is such a good person but she isn’t any different.

"I saw it all. I knew what you planned. I knew what you were going to do to me." I breathe out finally. It was just by chance. I might have lived my life and never knew what she was going to do.

I see the look of recognition as it flashes in her eyes. She might not really be here but this is as real as I am going to let it.

I don’t want to see her, I don’t want to be close to her again. Bringing her back to my life is one regret I will take with me to my grave. The desperation that made me go back to her will always be there and I will have to live with it but for now, I need to push her away.

I need to make sure I never see her again.

"I loved you—I still do,’’ she tries to defend herself. She knows what I am talking about, the day I found the notes written down, with the ingredients.

"Don’t you dare Amber, I don’t want to hear any of it,’’ I warn her with an angry scowl.

She shakes her head "You didn’t want a link. You told me so many times. You said you were happy with me. I just wanted to keep you with me that is why.’’

"I don’t care. You wanted to know and now you know. I don’t need you defending yourself. I don’t care because it is the past and you should leave it as that,’’ I grip the steering wheel tightly. My hands are shaking.

I am upset and I didn’t want to give her the satisfaction of seeing me upset.

"I am sorry, I am so sorry,’’ she manages as she sniffles out in tears.

I don’t need her apology.

I don’t need any of it because Amber thought she would be able to take the only thing that made a vampire happy. The fact that I know who my mate just makes it worse. Not ever getting the opportunity to meet Jabi is a fate that I don’t ever want to live.

Never.

Chapter 604: In his arms again

Darrien

She is looking at me and the faster I drive the closer I get to the community. I don’t want her anywhere near me once I get home. This shouldn’t be happening right now and I don’t even know how to get out of this mess that I put myself in. I just wanted to give her what she wanted but this encounter has brought a lot of memories that I wanted to forget. The life I lived before I knew better and now I don’t even know how to get out of this.

"Please forgive me D, I need you to actually forgive me,’’ she mutters, still in tears. I don’t know what is going on but I am scared that she is up to something. I mean, why does she need my forgiveness? After all those years.

"I have no reason to forgive you. It is the past. You need to leave things where they are.’’

"You hate me."

"I don’t hate you."

She scoffs "I know you do. I can feel it. I know you D.’’

I turn to her "Stop calling me that.’’ I tell her with a glare.

This conversation on its own feels wrong. I hate that I am here with her and Jabi is not aware of anything that is happening. Now that I have brought Amber into our lives. I need to tell him the truth. I need him to know everything that has to do with her because I don’t plan on keeping this from him.

I am an open book with him and that is the way it is always will be.

"I am sorry. Fuck, I should go." She starts to glitch and in a second she is gone. Just like that, she is not here anymore.

Do I feel good?

No?

I wanted to make things right with her. I wanted her to get her closure but it feels like I only made things worse.

I am pissed.

So angry.

I thought I had let things go all those years back. I thought I had moved on but I haven’t. Thinking about it only makes me feel worse. The anger even intensifies just from the thought of it. Makes me hate her even more.

I get to the community a couple of hours later. My mind is roaming, all thoughts stuck on Amber and maybe I didn’t handle things well.

No matter how I feel about her, she still helped me. She came through when I needed her and that should have been enough to forgive her. That should have been enough to treat her better than I did.

"Fuck,’’ I exclaim as I park the car in front of our place. My hands are shaking, I don’t want to see him with this much resentment emanating from me. I want to be able to focus on him and only him when I have him in my arms. I take a couple of deep breaths—a sort of way to muster up the courage and do what I have to do to get out of the car.

I am not going to call her back.

The best thing to do in this situation is to let things be. There is a lot of hesitation inside me. Like somehow, I am dirty and I need to clean myself before I go to him. That is what Amber has done to me and she wasn’t really even around me.

It takes me a couple of minutes to get out of the car and enter the house. I want to be quiet because I know that he is asleep and I don’t want to wake him up. I just want to hold him until the next day. I want to feel all those things that really make me happy.

The living room is dark, there is a light peeping through the door of our room. I know he is asleep. He probably slept off with the lights on. I wasn’t with him and that gets to him. I miss him so much and it has just been a day. A smile sprawls on my face as I walk into the room. He is under the covers, I can hear and feel him even before I even get to touch him.

I walk over to the bed and pull off my shoes and my clothes at the same time. I haven’t had a shower since I left the community.

I just want to hold him.

He is under the covers and I hear the rise and fall of his chest even though I can’t see him. I reach for the covers and his face comes to light. Fuck, he is so beautiful that it makes me ache. I could look at him for the rest of my life and still, I wouldn’t be content. His face is engraved inside me. I know every feature, every wrinkle, every spot, and every blemish. The perfectness that comes from him.

I don’t know how long I stare at him, I just want to look at him and be thankful that I am still here. That I am alive, that I had the chance to meet him and I had the chance to reunite with him yet again.

I don’t even notice him open his eyes until he calls my name out softly "Dar,’’ he calls me. His voice is low and there is confusion on his face.

I didn’t tell him I was coming.

He opens his eyes wider and I manage a smile as I stretch my arms out to him. In a hurry, he jumps out of the bed and into my arms. His warmth is all I feel as he buries his face in the crook of my neck. I was so cold before I came back home. I felt a chill that only he can take away from me.

"You’re here,’’ he exclaims in excitement "I was so worried but you are here,’’ he adds joyously.

’’I am here."

Chapter 605: All I need

Jabi

My man is here and I can’t control myself.

I want him to touch me and kiss me, I want his hands to continue feeling me up and I don’t want him to stop.

"Hey, I need to have a shower, I stink,’’ he scrunches up his nose as I try to kiss him again. his hands are on my waist. my heart is racing. I didn’t know I couldn’t miss him more than already did until I woke up and he was in front of me. Of course, I was worried.

He was supposed to just pick Rex up. that was the plan but the moment he didn’t come back home. I knew there was more to it and I could tell he didn’t want me to worry but how can I not worry.

I didn’t know where he was, I didn’t know what he was up against and I was seriously panicking. My mind has been in a frenzy since he told me that there was a hold up. I wanted to nag, I wanted to force him to come back but I also knew that I couldn’t.

From the sound of his voice, I knew he felt like he didn’t have a choice. He actually wanted to help them and it made me feel good. He wanted to help people other than me.

I like that Darrien is focused on me but I also wished for him to accept other people. I wanted him to have a sense of belonging and now it seems like he has. Maybe I haven’t really gotten to the place where I actually feel like I belong in the pack but if he is there, it might be easier for me.

"You smell delicious,’’ I bring my nose to his chest and take a whiff. There is a little musk in his scent but right now, I don’t even want to detach from him. I want to stay in his arms until morning comes. I want him to go crazy and lose control.

I want him completely naked.

He is only dressed in his underwear and a white singlet. My hands are not getting the feeling that it needs at this moment.

"You are just being a big baby,’’ he is smiling and that is all I need to get the go-ahead.

It has been a couple of days and my wolf is starving.

Tell me you don’t want me naked too. Tell me you don’t want to fuck me,’’ I breathe out slowly, my voice is a whisper. I can’t even believe that I am being this clingy right now. my hands slide into his singlet and he chuckles, obviously enjoying the attention I am giving him right now.

"You are being very naughty; you know I can’t resist it when you become like this.’’

There is a sexy smile on his face. I can’t focus on one part of him at a time. I want to be able to feel and see it all.

He pulls me up to him and I feel his dick, hard and throbbing against my shorts. "Take this off,’’ I tug at his boxers and he nods as he slowly shifts me off him and takes it off. His hands are quick as he does the same to his inner shirt. He is naked and just the way I remember. There isn’t even a scratch on his perfect body.

"Your turn,’’ he winks at me. my heart melts against my chest.

I love this man so much.

He is perfect.

He makes me so happy that there is no alternative.

I reach for my shirt as his hand rests on mine "I want to watch you, do it slowly,’’ his eyes are dark as he orders me. I nod because, at this moment, I will do anything he asks me to.

"Stand up and take off your clothes."

I nod and jump off the bed. I am excited and this intimacy is all I need. I need him to make me go crazy with want.

The ground is cold against my feet. I jump up and he smiles as I giggle "come on baby. I need you naked too.’’ He urges me, his hands stretching out to mine. I grab them and the butterflies kick in.

"Okay, on it." I let go of him and reach for my shirt first. His eyes never leave mine, as I try to be as seductive as possible. It is not in my nature; this is not something I am good at but the way he is looking at me just gives me all the courage I didn’t know I needed.

Once my clothes are off, he pulls me back to him smashes his lips to mine aggressively. Our tongues dance together in a beautiful rhythm making my heart race erratically. Our bodies are pressed together as he grinds his body against mine. My hands dance around his body, it feels like electricity surging through my body.

"More,’’ I pull away to get air but all I want is to drown inside him. I don’t want anything but to be one with him.

In a hurry, he pushes me to the bed and I open my eyes to look at him and all his glory. This is my man, the man that the goddess chose for me and I cannot be any luckier.

I feel him touch me and my hands tremble as I try to keep my grasp on him. His strokes are slow and oh so torturous.

"Do you like that; do you like it when I touch you there?’’ he asks in between kisses. Our bodies are intertwined. His hands are doing things to me that make me want to give him my all.

I nod because that is all I can do. I am a mess.

A complete mess for my man.

I feel him slide down to my entrance. His hands are cold but my body is already used to the temperature. I don’t ever want to feel warm with him. just the way it is, that is all I want.

Nothing else.
