Ch. 1881..1890
Married by Mistake: Mr. Whitman's Sinner Wife chapter 1881
Ada's mother would not have realized that this filthy, unkempt woman before her was Ada if she had not taken a closer look at her!
If Madeline had not seen it for herself, she would not have known that Carter was truly a man who would be willing to do anything.
Ada flinched in panic at her mother's feet, pulling a t the legs of her mother's trousers.
Mom, please take me home. I want to go home! I don't want to be a Viscountess anymore. I just want to be treated as a human being now!
Ada gasped as she begged her mother. Cautiously, she lifted her eyes to look at Carter.
Ada shuddered once again when she met his dark gaze.
Ada's mother remained stunned for a while before she regained her senses and bent down to help Ada up.
She pushed Ada's messy and dirty hair out aside and took a long look at Ada's face, which had not been washed in days. Once again, she was dumbstruck.
Ada, what happened to you... she asked. She then abruptly raised her head and glared at Carter questioningly. "Carter, how could you torture Ada like this?! She's your wife. Even if she made a mistake, you should tolerate her!"
Wife? I have never considered her as my wife, Carter retorted in a cold tone without thinking. "In my eyes, she's nothing more than a tool that was used to set up an arranged marriage."
You... Ada's mother had not expected Carter to express those words so bluntly.
She wanted to retort, but Ada clutched her sleeve firmly and pleaded repeatedly, "Don't say anything else. Just take me home quickly!"
Alright, I'll bring you home immediately! Let me see who still dares to bully you! Ada's mother responded aggressively. She helped Ada stand up and made a move to leave.
Without warning, Carter let out an uncanny snicker. "As an arsonist who has killed two people, do you think you'd be allowed to leave?"
Ada's foot abruptly shrank back. Even though Carter's claims were true, she would never confess.
At this point, the police had already processed Madeline's report and rushed over to Gray Villa.
When Ada saw that the police officer was about to handcuff her, she immediately put on an expression of grief and began yelling at Carter. "Carter! You may have never regarded me as your wife, but that doesn't give you the right to slander me like this! And you, Eveline, what evidence do you have? How can you convict me with mere words and your so- called intuition? This is absurd! I'm innocent, Officer. You cannot arrest me."
Ada, you're the one who's being absurd.
Madeline overturned Ada's lies without hesitation.
To prevent Adam from healing Shirley's legs and face, you irrationally set a fire to kill Adam and Cathy. With Adam dead, Shirley will become what you hoped. She'll remain in her current condition for the rest of her life.
Carter listened at the side as Madeline revealed Ada's motive. The uncanny smile on his face gradually gave way to a cold and dark expression accompanied by a hint of murderous intent.
Ada could sense Carter's unhappiness. Despite trembling in fear, she clung firmly to her protest.
"That's nonsense, Eveline! Is this an act of animosity on your part toward me? Why must you slander me this way? I, Ada, have never committed anything immoral!
I'm not even acquainted with Adam and Cathy. Carter had not allowed me anywhere near the house they lived in. I've never even been there. How could I have started the fire?"
Eveline, you keep on claiming that I did it. What evidence do you have? Are you presenting the nonsense that you speak as evidence?
Of course, I have evidence, given that I've made such a bold statement,
The moment Madeline uttered those words, Ada's arrogant and ferocious face froze instantly.
'There's evidence?
'Did Eveline have evidence that I started the fire?
'How is that possible? 'This is impossible! '
Ada's eyes flitted as she got increasingly flustered.
Married by Mistake: Mr. Whitman's Sinner Wife chapter 1882
Madeline studied Ada's flustered look and calmly pulled out an object from her pocket.
Mrs. Gray, can I request that you widen your eyes and take a good look at this. Does it belong to you?
In unison, all eyes turned to the object which was held between Madeline's fingers and wrapped in plastic.
Likewise, Ada immediately turned her gaze toward the object. When she saw the necklace in Madeline's hand, she unconsciously reached up and touched her bare neck.
Your reaction, Mrs. Gray, confirms that this is indeed your necklace.
.. Eveline, how dare you steal my necklace ! Ada bit back.
However, Madeline was unruffled. She contemptuously eyed Ada, who was still desperately protesting, and calmly walked up to Ada.
I didn't steal this necklace. I picked it up at the site of the fire the day after it occurred.
Ada fell into a panic at that moment.
She had no idea when she had lost the necklace, nor could she recall where she had dropped it.
Nevertheless, the necklace was now in Madeline's hand, and she was claiming that it had been picked up at the site of the fire.
Upon seeing the necklace in Madeline's hand, the police, in a serious expression, asked Ada, "Can you explain about this necklace?"
This... this isn't my necklace! Ada simply rejected the claim and denied it.
Madeline, however, smiled. "Do you think you can just deny it by saying so? Forensic scientists can extract the fibrous tissue and fingerprints on the necklace. After a test, we will know who has worn this necklace before."
"Ada had originally thought she could erase any suspicion against her. She had not expected Madeline to bring in forensic scientists.
What do you think? Should we proceed with a test? "" Madeline lifted her eyebrows slightly."
Ada, at a loss of words, could only glare at Madeline.
Why do you insist on victimizing me, Eveline? Is it because I ruined your wedding with Carter back then?
Madeline almost laughed out loud when she heard that. "You have killed people, yet you are asking me now why I'm testifying against you? Don't you think your question is ridiculous?"
You... Ada gritted her teeth viciously. She was preparing a retort to Madeline when a police officer approached Ada and placed a pair of handcuffs directly on her wrists.
Ada had never been treated this way before. When she saw the handcuffs on her wrists, she began struggling wildly as if she had lost her mind.
The frail disposition she displayed earlier had disappeared.
What? How dare you arrest me? Do you know who I am? I am the Viscountess!
Regardless of your status or position, if you break the law, you will be executed. Don't waste your breath, Ada. Madeline delivered a final blow to Ada.
Eveline... Crawford.
Ada spat out Madeline's name word by word through gritted teeth. She clenched her fists and wished she could swallow Madeline alive.
As the situation had progressed to this point, there was nothing Ada's mother could do. She walked over to Ada and reassured her.
Don't be afraid, Ada. Just go with them. Mom will hire the best lawyer to help you!
It would have been better if she had not said that. The moment Ada heard those words, she seemed to explode like a time bomb all at once!
Help me? You should help yourself instead! You made me do all this!
Married by Mistake: Mr. Whitman's Sinner Wife chapter 1883
Ada's mother had not expected Ada to betray her at such a critical moment!
Her eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at the woman in front of her shouting at her.
This was all your idea! You told me to simply burn Adam to death. You told me that once he was dead, Shirley would never recover! This might anger her so much that the baby in her womb may not survive a s well!
In lashing all her anger out at her mother, Ada had revealed how Ada had been instructed by her to commit the crime.
What? So you were the one who instigated her to do this? You two are amazing. Both mother and daughter! Camille was shocked by what Ada had said.
Ada's mother immediately turned green in the face. She feared that the police would arrest her as well, but she was more afraid that Carter would torture her because of this.
Carter, however, did not make any move despite the rage burning in his eyes.
While he may be a malicious person, he would never expose that side of himself in front of the police.
Madam, please come with us too.
The police officer spoke, pulling out another pair of handcuffs with a stern look on his face, and immediately handcuffed Ada's mother.
This... No... Officer... This has nothing to do with me. My daughter has gone mad and is now spewing nonsense ! Ada's mother did exactly what Ada had done earlier, flailing her hands around as she spouted absurdities, trying desperately to explain herself.
If you have anything to explain, you can do it at the police station. The police officers did not allow Ada's mother an opportunity to speak up. They pushed both mother and daughter directly toward the door.
Ada's mother had never felt so disgruntled. She turned her head toward Ada and screamed, "I gave birth to an idiot! I came here to help you, yet you turned the tables on me and betrayed me instead!
There's no cure for someone as stupid as you. No wonder Carter despises you. You are a foolish idiot! If the crime is confirmed, I, at most, had given you the idea. But it's different for you. You have killed two people!
"Ada, stunned by her mother's words, paled significantly. She seemed to just realize how foolish she had been in blurting out all the unnecessary details.
However, she could not take back her words now. Let's go,"" the police officer urged."
Ada's anger had subsided, and she trudged forward lifelessly.
Her mother, however, continued to curse, accusing Ada of dragging her into this mess.
Angered and upset, Ada turned her head and scolded, "As my mother, how can you accuse? You taught me to start a fire and kill! You've ruined my entire life! I am stupid, and that's because I have an idiot mother!"
You... Her mother's temper flared, and she raised her hand and slapped Ada across the face.
Ada had not eaten much during that period, plus she had been beaten by the bodyguards, so she had very little energy left. The moment her mother hit her, she lost all her strength and dropped to the ground with a thud.
Ada gritted her teeth angrily. She was struggling to stand up when Madeline walked up to her.
Actually, I did not find this necklace at the site of the fire. I came here a few days ago and deliberately took it from your room, Madeline said calmly, lowering her eyes to see Ada's expression as it increasingly lost its calm.
You... Eveline, what did you just say? Gritting her teeth and clenching her fists, Ada stared at Madeline with a hateful glare.
Indifferent, Madeline continued to stare at Ada. " I've used this tactic before. Have you forgotten? I t was the same tactic I had used when you framed me for adding peanuts to the soup."
Ada's expression froze. Her memory of what happened the last time returned quickly.
At that time, Madeline had also presented Ada's jewelry and claimed that she found it in the soup. It had been that incident that led to Ada losing all credibility with Camille.
However, she had not expected Madeline to use the same tactic twice!
Ada was fuming. She swiftly leaped up from the ground and attempted to strangle Madeline.
Married by Mistake: Mr. Whitman's Sinner Wife chapter 1884
Jeremy quickly grabbed Madeline's shoulder and pulled her into his arms, then lifted his long legs and mercilessly kicked Ada's stomach.
Ada shrieked in pain and fell onto the floor again. Her mouth crashed against the floor, and the taste of blood immediately filled her mouth.
“Eveline! ” Ada clenched her fists in displeasure. “How dare you frame me!”
“Frame you? I don't think you're even worth it. Half of the reason my little tricks could succeed is that you're stupid; the other half of the reason is that you have a guilty conscience. If you had never done that, you would have never ended up like this.”
“….” Ada laid on the ground as she furiously bit her bloodied lips. Her eyes seemed to be brimming with poison. She wanted so badly to drown Madeline in the poison.
“Eveline, you b*tch!
“B*tch!
“You've messed up my plans again and again! I will curse you! You will die a painful death! ”
“Shut up! If curses work, a woman as evil as you would have already died ten thousand times!”
Jeremy could not bear this any further. Naturally, he stood up for Madeline.
“You had it coming. You don't need to be cursed by anyone to be punished by the law.”
“…” Ada did not have any words to retort to Jeremy's scolding.
The police quickly lifted Ada and led her and her mother into the police car.
Shirley, seated in her wheelchair, was by the stairs of the first floor, watching the entire scene unfolding below.
The corners of her lips curled up. In spite of her smile, tears began falling from her eyes silently without her realizing it.
When the maid by her side saw Shirley crying, the maid quickly took out a handkerchief and bent down to help Shirley wipe away her tears.
“Miss Brown, are you okay? Why are you crying?”
Shirley pressed her lips into a smile. “Do you believe that there's karma in this world?”
“Um...” The maid did not know how to answer her. She thought about it for a while before changing the topic.
“Miss Brown, it's almost time. Let me take you downstairs. We'll go back to St. Piaf with Mr. Carter later.”
Shirley smiled faintly when she heard that. The perfect and flawless side of her face looked abnormally clean under the sunlight beaming in through the window.
“Do you know what makes someone feel the most blessed and happiest?”
After some thought, a sweet smile appeared on the maid's young face. “I think it's being together with the person you like.”
“Being together with the person you like?” Shirley smiled and repeated the sentence. She then parted her lips slowly. “True happiness is being united with your family.”
The maid nodded in agreement when she heard what Shirley had said.
Shirley lifted her alluring and beautiful eyes. There was happiness in her eyes, happiness that had been long absent. “I think I'll be reunited with my family soon.”
Shirley spoke and gently steered her wheelchair to the edge of the stairs.
The maid was still contemplating Shirley's words when she heard a sudden crashing sound.
Married by Mistake: Mr. Whitman's Sinner Wife chapter 1885
Carter was about to speak with Jeremy when he heard the sudden scream from the maid upstairs.
Just as he turned around, he also heard a loud crash coming from the stairs as if something heavy was rolling down the stairs.
When he lifted his eyes to look closer, he saw that it was Shirley who was falling down the stairs with her wheelchair, and he was stunned.
“Shirley! ” Panicking, Carter rushed over to Shirley who had tumbled down the stairs.
Camille hurried over as well.
Madeline and Jeremy were surprised too. Despite all of the despicable acts Shirley had committed, they did not look coldly from the sidelines.
The maid on the first floor stood as still as a statue as she watched Shirley fell the whole way down the stairs.
Carter had repeatedly told her to properly watch over Shirley, but now that Shirley had fallen down the stairs along with her wheelchair, the maid was
worried that she, too, would soon suffer.
Shirley fell the entire way down to the ground floor. When she lost her balance, the wheelchair ran over her. She felt pain but she did not care anymore.
Carter ran to the bottom of the stairs and squatted down to carry Shirley.
The fall and stumble from the first floor had given Shirley some flesh wounds, but her head suffered the most grievous injury as it had crashed against the metal railing of the stairs.
Carter picked Shirley up, getting ready to run to the hospital.
When Shirley, whose eyes were half-closed from the pain, saw Carter's panicked countenance, crystal
#NAME?
“You don't have to send me to the hospital,” Shirley said with a smile.
Carter stopped abruptly in his tracks. He felt a hot, sticky liquid on the palm of his hand.
As he wondered what it was, Camille suddenly screamed, “Her lower body's bleeding! Send her to the hospital! Hurry!”
When Carter heard this, he felt as if his heart had stopped, suffocating him, for one second.
After spacing out for two seconds, he strode onward once again.
Sensing Carter's concern for her, the corners of Shirley's lips curled up against her volition, revealing a contented smile.
'It seems that you like me too, Carter.'
Shirley finally dared to confirm this, but it was too late.
“Carter, don't take me to the hospital...”
Shirley spoke again, rejecting Carter's kindness. “I'm deliberately seeking death.”
Her answer made Carter stop walking again.
Carter lowered his eyes and looked into Shirley's teary, red eyes in disbelief.
“What did you say? You're seeking death?”
“Yes, I am. I don't want to see you again. I'm tired.”
The corners of Shirley's lips tugged as an endless pain and despair could be seen in her smile.
“I truly felt thankful for meeting you back then. All those years we've spent together make me feel that I'm the luckiest person in the world.
“In those earlier times, I had always been immersed in my selfish hatred. I hated my parents for only loving my brother, but after finding my father's notebook, I realized that their love had never been biased. They had even cared for me a little more than they had for my brother.
“They sent me to St. Piaf to further my studies, yet I thought that they wanted to abandon me. Believing myself infallible, I left school and wandered the streets. I was indifferent when I learned about their deaths, but I finally know how stupid I was. Hiss..."
As Shirley recounted her past, she frowned in pain, and more tears filled the corners of her eyes.
“Even though my stupid brother always seems to make life difficult for me and occasionally scolds me, I know he cares about me. Yet, his so-called sister's stubbornness killed him and that kind girl in the end ...”
As Shirley spoke, she turned her face toward Madeline and Jeremy who stood nearby.
Married by Mistake: Mr. Whitman's Sinner Wife chapter 1886
“ I'm sorry. I hope it's not too late for me to atone for my sins.”
Upon hearing what Shirley said, Madeline and Jeremy felt a little touched in the depths of their hearts.
“Don't speak. If Adam was aware of this, he wouldn't want you to be like this as well Let's go to the hospital.”
Madeline urged but Shirley softly shook her head, her eyes starting to close from exhaustion.
“ I miss my parents and my brother. I also want to apologize to that girl who had been taking care of me for so long ...”
Shirley closed her eyes. Warm tears flowed down from the corners of her eyes.
Carter's eyes reddened as he sobbed.
“Shirley, you only remember your parents, your brother, and Cathy with whom you have no blood relation. But what about me? Did you ever think about our child?”
“Heh.”
Shirley closed her eyes and chuckled.
“We don't have a child. This child has been destined to die in my womb since the beginning.”
Once again, Shirley's words simultaneously stabbed Carter's heart like a sharp knife and also shocked everyone in the room.
Camille, too, was extremely agitated and anxious.
“Carter, ignore whatever she says. Get her to the hospital now! Get to the hospital and you might still have a chance to save the child!”
Shirley laughed when she heard that. She murmured to herself, “It's no use even if you save the child, he's destined to not come to this world...”
Even though Shirley was speaking very softly, Carter could still hear her.
Her words made his mind buzz.
On the way to the hospital, Carter nearly lost his grip on the steering wheel.
He could not accept that Shirley had done this on purpose. She had deliberately fallen from the stairs. She deliberately wanted to die in front of him.
How could she be so ruthless?
How could she also not care about the child? How hopeless was she to be able to do this?
Carter paced back and forth as he waited outside the operating theatre. He felt as if his heart had been burnt, tortured to the point of breaking.
He regretted. He should have taken care of Ada when he knew that she was the one who disfigured Shirley instead of keeping Ada around, giving her more chance to hurt Shirley and the people around Shirley.
Adam and Cathy's deaths might have been the last straw for Shirley.
She wanted to die because of her guilt over Adam and Cathy's deaths. It was also because there was no longer anyone she would live for in this world.
Not even him and the child in her womb.
Madeline and Jeremy got to the hospital after some consideration.
Throughout their journey, they were still astonished by Shirley's attempt in ending her life.
They also believed that Shirley had been sincere when she apologized earlier.
Perhaps she had already come to her senses long ago, but she just had not been showing it.
When Carter saw Madeline and Jeremy, he felt anger suddenly rising in his chest.
He walked toward Jeremy. When he was about to speak, the light of the emergency room turned off and the doctor walked out.
Carter felt dizzy when he saw the strikingly salient bloodstains on the doctor's gloves.
He turned around and strode over, then frantically asked, “Doctor, how's the patient? She's fine, isn't she? The baby in her womb is also fine, right?”
Married by Mistake: Mr. Whitman's Sinner Wife chapter 1887
From the anxiety in Carter's tone and statement, Madeline could hear how much he wished Shirley and the child in Shirley's stomach to be fine.
However, what he got was the doctor's remorseful shake of his head.
“What's your relation to the patient?” the doctor asked him.
Carter seemed to be stunned by the question. Who was Shirley to him?
Was he her husband? No.
However, she was pregnant with his child. Her sweetheart?
Not even that.
He had never given her any promise as sweethearts would.
The relationship between them could no longer be described in simple words.
The doctor thought it odd when he saw Carter not speaking for a long time. And then Carter finally spoke.
“I am her... lover.” 'Is that right?
'She should still love me, right?' Carter thought, comforting himself.
When the doctor heard this, he interpreted this as them being husband and wife.
“Sir, I'm sorry to tell you that the child in your wife's womb was already gone while you were on the way here.”
Carter's heart turned cold after hearing the doctor's answer.
He was stunned, and his eyes lost focus. It took a good few seconds before Carter, not entirely present, continued to ask, “What about my wife? How is she?”
“Many of your wife's bones are fractured. Her waist was the most serious, and we've discovered that her legs seem to have already lost their ability to function. Coupled with her current waist injury, it's almost impossible for her to stand up again.”
“I'm not asking about this! I only want to know if she can continue to live properly! ”
Carter lost control and yelled.
The doctor, shocked, quickly answered.
“Yes! Of course! She's not in any danger, but she won't be able to live like a normal person.”
“Who says she can't? As long as I'm by her side, she'll be able to live like any other normal person! ”
After the red-eyed Carter was done yelling at the doctor, he walked straight into the operating theatre.
Jeremy, who stood motionless as he watched the man lost control of his emotions, could emphasize with Carter.
When Madeline noticed Jeremy's unusual mood, she quickly caught on.
“Jeremy, are you thinking about what happened to me back then?”
Jeremy suddenly returned to his senses. He nodded truthfully, then lowered his gaze and looked into Madeline's beautiful eyes.
“That day, I also had anxiously paced in the hallway like Carter. I kept staring at the red light above the door of the operating theatre.”
Jeremy reminisced. Even though Madeline was standing next to him right now, he still felt a bone- piercing pain surging through his blood.
“After the light had turned off, the doctor told me that you were gone. I didn't believe him, and I refused to believe him. I had hoped that you were merely lying to me, that you were just acting. After that, I had also rushed into the operating theatre as Carter did. Then, I saw you. You had already stopped breathing.”
As Jeremy spoke, his eyes turned red as well.
Madeline held his hand, and she realized that his hand was icy.
Married by Mistake: Mr. Whitman's Sinner Wife chapter 1888
“Jeremy, stop thinking about those unhappy memories. I'm right here with you now, and I'm fine.”
When he heard that, Jeremy smiled warmly, then lifted his hand, pulled Madeline into his arms, and held her tightly.
“Linnie, I'm really stupid, right? I only realized how important you are to me at that moment. You had already rooted yourself in my heart, yet I had no idea even though I loved you deeply.”
Jeremy felt extremely remorseful and he blamed himself.
Madeline smiled and lifted her hand to pat his back. She comforted gently, “ Sometimes, the onlooker sees more of the game. Don't blame yourself.”
“Of course, I blame myself for not appreciating
such an amazing wife.” Although Jeremy said that in a joking tone, he was sincere when he said that.
Madeline, too, certainly knew how much this man in front of her cared about her.
“Eveline, where's Carter?” Camille, who finally arrived, asked. “Do you know what's Shirley's condition?”
When they were leaving the house, Camille had suddenly received an important call and had to take the urgent matter. That was why she had only just arrived.
Madeline looked at the operating theatre and remorsefully said, “Carter just went into the operating theatre. Shirley's fine, but the child in her womb is gone.”
Camille's expression changed when she heard that. A hint of regret flashed across her eyes very quickly, then she hurriedly asked, “ How's Shirley? Is her life in any danger? Is she still in the operating theatre?”
“The doctor said she's fine. ” After Madeline said that, Camille let out a silent sigh of relief.
“But she's paralyzed from the waist down.”
“What?” Camille widened her eyes in shock, and tears welled up in her eyes.
“She's really stupid! ”
Camille seemed to grumble and complain, but in reality, she was heartbroken regretful.
Now that the situation had progressed to this stage, Madeline and Jeremy no longer continued to stay in the hospital.
However, after returning to Whitman Manor, Karen pointed at a square box on the coffee table and said, “A the city express delivery parcel had just arrived for Jeremy. They've even used dry ice to preserve it in such cold weather. What did you buy, Jeremy? ”
Jeremy stared at the box and thought it odd. He did not buy anything, let alone order it through the city express delivery.
He picked up the bill on the box and saw that it had been sent out before he and Madeline went out. What was even weirder was that it was sent from Gray Villa.
Madeline and Jeremy shared a look and took the box upstairs.
Even though they did not know what was happening, they were certain that Carter had not sent them this.
When Jeremy opened it, he saw a securely wrapped box of test reagents.
There were seven of them, and they were icy blue.
“What test reagents are these?” This was the first time Madeline saw test reagents in this color.
Jeremy, however, was familiar with them. The anti-toxoid test reagent for AXP69 Shirley sent over that day was similar to this color.
However, that one had looked more pigmented than the test reagents in this box.
“This should be from Shirley. ” Jeremy assumed, but at the same time, he was almost certain.
“Shirley?” Madeline was surprised. “What test reagents are these, then? Why did she send these to you this morning?”
Madeline asked, puzzled, but after a while, she immediately made the connection.
“I understand now.”
Madeline suddenly looked into Jeremy's eyes which showed that Jeremy had similarly seen through this.
“Since she had sent this parcel to you, these test reagents are for you. The poison she developed back then had changed the color of your pupils and hair, which are still not completely recovered yet. So, these might be the anti-toxoid reagents that can clear the poison in your body.”
Madeline voiced the assumptions in her heart, and Jeremy agreed.
“Linnie, look, there's a letter too.”
Married by Mistake: Mr. Whitman's Sinner Wife chapter 1889
Madeline eyed the letter Jeremy took out from the bottom of the box.
When she opened it, it was evident that it was from Shirley.
There was but a simple line of words on the letter. “ Jeremy, these are the test reagents that can get rid of the remaining poison in your body. When that happens, the color of your hair and pupils will return to normal. I've written down the directions to use them on the box. I hope you get well soon.
I'm sorry.”
The signature was Shirley's.
Her handwriting was very beautiful, just like how she had looked.
In reality, however, Shirley's heart was not that vile and foul.
After Madeline and Jeremy finished reading the letter, they shot another look at the box of test reagents, feeling slightly touched.
However, right now, Madeline felt more relieved. He could finally go back to the way he had been.
In the hospital.
Shirley woke up from her deep slumber groggily. To her surprise, she saw Carter at the side of her bed with his eyes closed.
She was not dead.
Shirley closed her eyes in disappointment, then moved gently. However, her movement shot an excruciating pain through her as if her body was in pieces.
She remembered what happened before she lost consciousness.
She no longer had the will to live. She wanted to die. She missed her parents. She missed Adam. She also wanted to apologize to Cathy.
She had rolled her wheelchair directly onto the stairs.
She had thought that she could fall to her death, but she did not.
A sudden thought came to her, and she lifted her hands to touch her flat stomach. The feeling of emptiness made her warm around the eyes.
'I'm sorry, my baby.
'It's my fault for being so heinous. I've never wanted you to suffer the retribution.'
Shirley closed her eyes and tears silently fell from the corners of her eyes.
“Is she still not awake?” Camille's voice came from the door suddenly.
Shirley tried to rein in her sadness, quickly wiping away the tears in the corners of her eyes, and pretended to still be unconscious.
At one side, Carter woke up from his nap. When he saw the motionless Shirley, he frowned, the exhaustion visible on his handsome face.
Shirley mumbled to herself. She knew she could never again get the answer to this.
When she thought about how Adam and Cathy died because of her, she could not forgive herself.
She could not blame anyone. She affected everyone around her because she had been on the wrong path since the start.
Regardless, Shirley did not think that Carter would let her off the hook just like that.
After some thought, Shirley lifted her hand effortfully to press the call button to send a nurse over.
The nurse ran over quickly, thinking something had happened to Shirley. However, Shirley looked at her sincerely and said, “Nurse, can you help me with something?”
