Ch. 1531..1535

Chapter 1531

Sherry furrowed her brows. “What are you trying to do?”

John took off his jacket and shoes. He sat down on the other side of the bed and picked up a book to read.

Sherry blushed. Her eyes flickered.

John’s silence clearly stated that she was overthinking.

Awhile later, Sherry’s eyes closed and she dozed off. When she woke up, the sky was still dark, but she was alone in the room. John and Caprice were gone.

She got up and went outside.

Then, she saw John and Caprice sitting on the couch in the living room. John was sipping on tea while Caprice’s chubby body leaned on him.

The girl was holding his phone while having a video call with Liam, who had just gotten home, with a wide grin. Caprice hummed a reply at the screen and then said, “Liam, bye-bye.”

Liam pursed his lips. “Bye.”

The video call ended.

Caprice’s smile remained widened as she returned the phone to John.

While he pocketed his phone, Sherry came over and carried the little girl into her arms.

“Caprice, what did you talk to Liam about?”

Caprice smiled in silence, which intrigued Sherry. What did the little couple talk about that made the girl this happy? It was then that the man’s rich voice spoke, “They video-called for ten minutes, and they only talked about ten things.” Sherry was even more confused.

Ten things?

She looked at him. “How did you know?”

John curved his lips. “I counted.”

Sherry was speechless momentarily before she continued, “Well, what are the ten things they talked about?”

He said, “It was Liam who asked her the questions about dinner, how she was doing, and so on. Then, the boy said he had to go, and the call ended.”

Sherry was baffled.

How could such mundane topics last for ten minutes and make the girl this happy?

Nevertheless, Caprice was not even three years old, and her vocabulary was much less than the Carter kids. Her intention of the call was not to chat with Liam but just to see his handsome face.

Sherry chuckled helplessly. Then, a sudden thought rushed into her mind, and it drove her to ask, “Caprice, why don’t | bring you out for a walk?”

The lingering delight made her answer without a second thought. “Yeah!”

John glanced at her. “It’s cold outside. Where are you bringing her?”

Sherry said, “Your place is huge. Can't | take her out for a stroll?”

“Fine. Remember to bring your jacket,” John said with a bewitching grin.

Sherry’s gaze flickered. “I’m not stupid.” She carried Caprice back to the room to grab the jacket. After putting on the red jacket on the girl, the mother and daughter went out for a stroll.

They strolled along the main avenue and eventually reached Madam Stockton’s front yard. The gate was open, but there was no one there.

A quick thought later, Sherry asked Caprice, “Caprice, do you know who lives here?”

Chapter 1532

Caprice answered in her adorable voice, “Grandma.”

Sherry smiled. “It’s been days since you last see her. Do you miss her?”

Caprice honestly shook her head.

Sherry’s lips twitched helplessly momentarily. “But Grandma misses you. Why don’t you go in and visit her?”

Caprice hesitated for a moment before he said, “Okay.”

Sherry put her down and added, “Caprice, go have dinner with Grandma. When you're done, Mommy will come to pick you up.”

Caprice furrowed her brows. “Mommy is not going in together with me?”

“| have something else to do, so | can’t go in with you. Go on, Grandma is going to be really happy when she sees you,” Sherry said as she stroked the girl’s head.

Caprice pursed her lips. “Mm—hmm...” She moved her tiny legs and slowly waddled inside. Sherry hid behind the gate and watched the girl go in.

A few steps later, one of the older servants who served Madam Stockton came running out. A closer look later, the servant screamed excitedly into the house,” Madam, Ms. Caprice is here to see you!”

As soon as the voice subsided, Madam Stockton came out from the living room. The moment she saw Caprice, her eyes gleamed. She discarded her elegance and ran towards the girl to hold her tightly.

Madam Stockton then went inside with the servant while carrying Caprice. Sherry chuckled at the scene and then left.

It was not that she wanted to win the old lady’s favor, but when she came back in the afternoon, she spotted the old lady hiding behind the wall just to have a glance at Caprice. It was pitiful for an old lady to react this way.

The old lady resented her but liked the little girl a lot. It was strange indeed.

After going back into the house, Madam Stockton carried the girl to the couch. She ordered the servant, “Go prepare Caprice’s favorite food, and bring over the toys!”

The servant went off obediently.

Madam Stockton stared at Caprice’s fair and chubby face. She smiled brightly and said, “Caprice, why did you come here alone? Did you miss Grandma?”

Caprice shook her head.

Madam Stockton was stunned. Why did the girl shake her head?

Caprice said, “Mommy brought me here. She said Grandma misses me, so she wanted me to have dinner with you.” Madam Stockton’s smile froze and her expression shifted.

The servant returned after sending the orders to the kitchen. She echoed meekly,” Ms. Fowler brought her here. | was behind the door just now, and | heard everything.”

The servant had noticed Sherry before they even came into the front yard. Therefore, she decided to hide behind the door to see what she was up to. She did not expect that Sherry would send Caprice here just to visit Madam Stockton. Had she not seen it herself, she would never have believed it either.

Madam Stockton obviously did not believe Sherry would bring Caprice here just to accompany her. She asked the servant again, “Did she really say that to Caprice?”

The servant nodded. “Yes, she did.”

Madam Stockton furrowed her brows with a complicated look.

Why would Sherry send Caprice over just to accompany her? Could Sherry have noticed her peeking from behind the wall earlier?

Other than that, Madam Stockton could not think of anything else. She believed Sherry did not do this to win her favor.

Sherry had never tried to please her in the past, and now that she became an important figure at the Sagers, there were even fewer reasons for her to do so.

She had even brought Sherry’s parents here a while ago just so they could persuade her to leave John, and because of that, John refused to talk to her.

Why would Sherry do this? Were there any other hidden agendas that she did not know of? Madam Stockton pondered deeply.

However, even she herself relied on her son to become the reputable Madam Stockton that everyone knew. Since Sherry already married her son who was so protective of his wife, what else could that woman be aiming for?

The servant noticed the complicated expression on Madam Stockton’s face. She smiled and said, “Madam, since Ms. Caprice is here, why don’t you play with her? Leave the problems for later.”

Before Sherry married John, although Madam Stockton could see Caprice all the time, it was rare for her to have dinner with the girl alone.

John had Caprice by his side all the time, even when he was at work. It was almost impossible for her to have some private time with the adorable girl.

Madam Stockton regained her composure and looked at the girl with crystal-clear eyes.

Chapter 1533

Chapter 1533 Her concerned expression was immediately replaced by a delightful smile.

She hugged Caprice and pointed at the table with toys and snacks. “Caprice, which snack do you want? Or which toy do you want to play with?”

Caprice shook her head.

“You don’t want to play or eat?”

Caprice nodded and hummed a reply.

“Then, tell me what you want. Even if you want the stars from the sky, I'll get you one right away!” Caprice opened her mouth. “I’m hungry. | want to eat.”

Madam Stockton choked for a moment before she burst out in laughter. This would be the first in many days since she felt this happy.

The servant also smiled when she saw Madam Stockton laugh. “I'll tell the kitchen to serve dinner right away.”

“Tell them to prepare Caprice’s favorite.”

“l understand.”

Sherry pocketed both her hands as she returned to her own place.

John was still on the couch when she came in, and when he noticed Caprice was not with her, he asked, “Where’s Caprice?” “At your mother’s.”

John was slightly surprised. He asked with a smile, “How did she end up at my mother’s?”

Sherry averted his gaze and explained, “She said she missed her Grandma, so | sent her over.”

The servant was serving dinner.

Sherry sat down at the table and was ready to dig in.

John got up and sat opposite her. He stared at her with his sharp gaze and asked, ‘Is it true that she missed her Grandma?” “Yeah. Or else why would | send her there?”

“Haha.”

“What are you laughing at?”

“Sherry, do you really think that, as a father, | don’t know my own daughter?” He curved his eyes and lips into a devilish gaze. Sherry’s eyes flickered. She did not say a word.

John stared at her. “Be honest. Why did you send her over?”

Sherry was annoyed by his persistence, but since the man had already seen through her disguise, there was nothing else to hide anymore.

“I saw your mother hiding behind the wall when we came back.”

John’s expression shifted.

She added, “You went in with Caprice, so you didn’t see her. | think she came to see Caprice.”

The atmosphere fell into a momentary silence.

John curled his lips into a smile. “So, you sent Caprice to her?”

“Yeah. What else?” Sherry answered out of annoyance.

John chuckled. “Eat.”

Sherry dug in.

Then, a piece of fried rib, which was her favorite, was placed on her plate. It was John who had done that.

Sherry’s heart raced, but she said, “I have hands. | can eat on my own.”

He smiled. “I didn’t do it on purpose. I’m just afraid that when you stand up to reach the ribs, you'll get them on me.” Sherry choked in silence and glared at him.

The plate of fried ribs was indeed further away, but even if she had to stand up to reach it, she would not spill the gravy or fling the meat onto him.

Chapter 1534

Madam Stockton held Caprice in her arms by the table and fed the girl herself.

The girl was not picky but was a slow eater. Though the slower she ate, the more time Madam Stockton could spend with her. Caprice’s adorable look when she chewed melted the old lady’s heart and made her grin widen.

It was then that Julie came in. She wanted to have dinner with Madam Stockton and checked on her condition.

Given her understanding of Madam Stockton, the old lady must be sulking and refusing to have dinner. Maybe with a little more push, she could urge the old lady to think of a way to chase Sherry out of the house tonight.

She came in with a grin, but when she heard Madam Stockton speaking happily and gently, she was stunned. “Good girl, Caprice. Here, have more.”

Julie’s expression froze when she saw Caprice in Madam Stockton’s arms.

‘Why is the girl here alone?! Why did John leave her here!?*

Before she could connect her questions to answers, Madam Stockton noticed her. Madam Stockton waved and said, “Julie, come. Come and have dinner with us.”

Julie immediately swapped her shocked expression for a bright smile and went over. She asked, “Mother, why is Caprice here? Did John bring her here?”

Madam Stockton’s gaze shifted. “It wasn’t John.”

“Then, who?”

Madam Stockton knew it was Sherry, but she refused to accept the fact. “Caprice missed me, so she came over by herself.” Caprice missed her? Though it sounded absurd, it was the only explanation if John had not sent her over.

A quick thought later, Julie decided to play along.

“Mother, look, | was saying earlier that you were overthinking, and now Caprice came over to see you. But does John know she’s here?”

“Yeah. | told the servant to inform him.”

Madam Stockton simply came up with an excuse and continued to feed Caprice. Caprice opened her mouth, ate the food, chewed, and swallowed it.

Madam Stockton was delighted.

Julie noticed that Madam Stockton’s plate remained empty, so she said, “Mother, why don’t you have dinner first? I'll feed Caprice.”

Madam Stockton immediately answered, “No. You go ahead.” She had not had enough of holding Caprice.

Julie pursed her lips.

After dinner, Sherry had a glance at the time. She said to John, “Caprice should have finished eating. Go bring her back.”

John raised a brow. “You are the one who sent her there. You go and pick her up.”

Sherry frowned. “You haven't seen her for the entire meal. Don’t miss her?”

When John stared at her sharply, her eyes flickered out of guilt. Indeed, she did not want to go to Madam Stockton’s place.

If Madam Stockton refused to release Caprice back to her and insisted on taking her daughter away, a conflict would break out. Amomentary silence later, John curled his lips. “If you bed me, | might consider bringing Caprice back for you.”

“Master Stockton, that’s your daughter!”

John smiled. “She’s at my mother’s place, not some stranger’s house.” He knew what she was thinking.

Sherry glared at him and went to the door. Before she headed out, she turned around and said, “Master Stockton, don’t say | didn’t warn you. If your mother and | fight, do not intervene or take sides.”

John’s lips twitched helplessly.

Chapter 1535

Chapter 1535 Sherry rolled her sleeves up and went out of the house.

Awhile later, she arrived at Madam Stockton’s front yard. The gate remained open, but there was no one in sight, so she took the liberty to go up to the front door.

She saw Madam Stockton happily feeding Caprice fruits. The girl basically ate everything her grandmother put in her mouth, and she looked adorable.

Julie was also sitting opposite them. When the maid noticed Sherry’s arrival, she told Madam Stockton, “Madam, Ms. Fowler is here.” Both Madam Stockton and Julie turned to Sherry together.

Caprice also saw her mother. Her eyes gleamed. She stopped eating and said, ” Mommy...” Her tiny chubby hands reached out to Sherry, seemingly asking for a hug. Madam Stockton’s expression turned grim, and her brows furrowed.

Julie caught her change in expression and her eyes flickered. She then smiled at Sherry and said, “Ms. Fowler, Caprice isn’t done eating. Why don’t you let her finish the fruits?”

“I'm done,” Caprice said without a second thought. Julie’s smile froze.

Sherry walked over to Caprice with a smile and disregarded Julie. She said to Madam Stockton, “Madam Stockton, Caprice said she’s done. I’m here to bring her back.”

Madam Stockton gave her the cold shoulder and silent treatment, but she released the girl from her arms. Sherry then took Caprice into her arms. The girl leaned on her mother’s shoulder and curled her hands around the neck.

Then, Julie said, “Ms. Fowler, it’s been days since Mother saw Caprice. Why don’t you leave her here for a little longer, for John’s sake? You can pick her up later.”

Sherry frowned.

For John’s sake? Why?

Did it mean that if she insisted on taking Caprice away, it would be disrespectful to John and also Madam Stockton?

Sherry looked at Julie and saw her polite and friendly smile. Her lips twitched helplessly. Just when she was arranging her words to retort, Madam Stockton said, ” Caprice already had dinner with me. It’s getting late. You should bring Caprice back to rest.”

Despite her grumpy look, Madam Stockton’s tone sounded rather gentle. Sherry was surprised by the old lady’s words, and so was Julie.

The atmosphere went silent momentarily before Sherry regained her composure. She said to Caprice, “Caprice, say goodbye to Grandma.”

Caprice obediently said, “Bye-bye, Grandma.” Madam Stockton smiled gently. “See you, my precious baby.”

After Sherry left with Caprice, the living room returned to awkward silence.

Madam Stockton stared at Julie with a stern look. “Julie, what was that?”

Julie’s eyes flickered. She said, “Mother, | was just trying to make her leave Caprice here for a little longer so that you can spend more time with her.”

“| really do want to spend more time with Caprice, but can’t you see that Caprice already wants to leave? If | want Caprice to stay, | can tell her myself, and | won't simply hand her back either.”

Julie immediately said, “I’m sorry, Mother.”

“Hmph. Remember not to say something like this again. It made me look like | was trying to threaten Sherry with my status and position.”

Julie frowned. “I understand. I'll be mindful of my words.”

“I'm going to rest. You should go back as well.”

“Okay. Goodnight, Mother.” Julie got up and left the house.

After she left, Madam Stockton asked the maid, “Don’t you think that there’s

something wrong with Julie today?”
