Ch. 751..755

Chapter 751 The house was very quiet, so quiet that only her breathing could be heard.

It was rather boring, so after sitting for a while, she grabbed her coat and walked out of the house, intending to go to the nearby street for a stroll.

Meanwhile, inside a car somewhere else that had just merged onto the highway, the driver was driving attentively. Odell sat by himself in the backseat.

Ding ding.

His phone chimed.

He opened it and saw that it was a message from Lily.” Hey, I’m all ready. Are you done with work yet?”

He texted his reply and sent it, “I just finished work. I'll just have a quick look at the kids, and then I'll come meet you.” “Okay, then I'll wait for you at the restaurant first.”

“Okay.”

He put away his phone and looked out of the car window.

The cold wind blew across the street, sending dry leaves rattling everywhere. It was colder than Sylvia had imagined

She suddenly regretted even coming out, but there were still two junctions until she reached the street. She took a deep breath and continued advancing forward , wrapped in a thick coat.

Just as she was about to step past a junction, her feet slipped from underneath her as she accidentally stepped on a thin layer of ice that had formed on the road.

She could not get a steady foothold and tumbled backward, landing on the cold hard ground with a resounding thud. Her body trembled all over while she felt a terrible jolt in her belly. She cried out in pain.

That was when a black car swerved into the junction from a distance. The man seated in the backseat immediately recognized her figure at first glance.

The look in his eyes changed, and he immediately ordered, “Stop!”

The driver urgently slammed on the brakes. Within a second, the door was thrown open and the man rushed out of the car to run to Sylvia's side.

She moaned. Chapter 751 3/4

‘It hurt. Everything hurts.’ Sylvia put her hands on her stomach and turned her head around frantically. She wanted to find a passerby to help her contact an ambulance.

However, there was not a soul anywhere nearby. There was not even a single car to be seen passing by this junction.

Her nerves were getting to her, and she felt like she was on the edge of crying when she suddenly heard the sound of hurried footsteps behind her.

When she turned around, the tall and familiar figure of the man suddenly came into view.

She felt a sharp sting pricking her nose. “Odell...” Odell went up to her and picked her up from the ground without a word. She pursed her lips and let him carry her into his car.

It was warm inside the car, but her initial feeling was discomfort. Her stomach was still hurting, so she covered her stomach and frowned deeply.

Odell took a glance at her and shouted to the driver, “Go to the hospital immediately!” The driver turned the car around at once, and all was quiet again.

Sylvia gnashed her teeth and did not utter a word whereas

Odell stared at her pointedly.

After about ten minutes, they finally arrived at the hospital.

Sylvia wanted to open the door and step out of the car herself when Odell’s long and slender arm stretched out in front of her and took her into his arms. He bolted into the hospital.

The cold wind was blowing in from every direction.

Due to the mix of cold and the severe pain she was in, she buried her face into the spot between his neck and his shoulder. His neck seemed to be radiating heat which provided her with some comfort being in this position.

Something seemed to glimmer in Odell’s eyes, and he immediately quickened his pace again.

Chapter 752 An hour later, Sylvia was admitted to the hospital.

After treatment , her condition was returned to a stable state. Although she still felt some tightness in her stomach, she was not in pain anymore. Still, she had to stay hospitalized for several days.

She leaned back against the head of the bed and looked weakly at the man standing by the door.

He was leaning against the wall, his posture seeming rather laidback, but his eyes conveyed a different impression as he stared at her with grim intensity.

It took a while for Sylvia to pluck the courage to thank him. “Thank you.”

He looked at her harshly. “Damn right you have to thank me. If | hadn’t run into you, your baby would probably have been gone by now.”

Sylvia pursed her lips.

The doctor attending to her informed her that if Odell brought her to the hospital just a little later, it might have been over for the unborn child. Odell was her life savior tonight.

Her eyes gleamed and she thanked him again. “Thank you for saving us.”

Odell shot her a look and asked, “What were you doing out there instead of staying home?” Sylvia answered, “I got a little bored at home, so | thought I'd head to the street to take a walk.” His face darkened upon hearing this.

The weather was so cold that any puddle of water in the city was frozen into ice. A pregnant woman had no business walking around in such conditions, especially at night!

As if that was not bad enough, she was even traveling on a road where there was not a single person in sight! If she had not been fortunate enough to chance into him tonight, there was a chance that she would have lost her life along with the baby!

He became irrationally angry and burst out, “It looks to me that you’re suicidal!” Sylvia narrowed her eyes, pursed her lips, and remained quiet. Odell walked to the window angrily and looked outside while she stared at his stout figure from behind.

Along silence descended upon the room.

After a while, seeing that he was still upset, Sylvia proposed, “Everything is fine now. Why don’t you go home to get some rest?” Chapter 752

Odell turned back to her. His gaze was sharp and cold.

Sylvia was startled by his vicious look and shrank away. She suddenly felt another throb in her stomach, so she cried out in pain. Odell’s expression immediately shifted. “What's wrong?” “It’s alright. It’s just a pain in my stomach, but it’s gone now.” Sylvia smiled back at him.

It was true, it was just a momentary pain. Her child must have responded to her fear.

Odell frowned, then he turned and walked out. His tall figure disappeared in the blink of an eye.

Sylvia felt an emptiness brewing inside of her.

Just like that, he was gone.

Shortly after that, the doctor who had attended to her entered the ward and inquired about her current condition.

Sylvia answered the questions obligingly. The doctor breathed a sigh of relief upon noting her condition and instructed her to focus on getting an ample amount of rest, then he left the ward.

Sylvia looked out of the door again.

As soon as Odell left, the doctor had shown up and checked up on her. Did he send the doctor in?

After not seeing a glimpse of Odell for a while, she pursed her lips and lay back on the bed. He was probably gone by now. Meanwhile , at the end of the corridor outside her ward.

Odell was standing by the window, looking at the view outside with a gloomy look in his eyes.

The doctor, who had just spoken to Sylvia, appeared behind him and informed dutifully, “Master Carter, Miss Sylvia is doing fine. All she needs is a good rest, and there will be no further problems.”

“Good.”

“If there’s nothing else, I'll get back to it.”

“Yeah.”

The doctor turned away.

As Odell opened the window, a gust of cold wind beat against his face.

Meanwhile, inside a certain expensive restaurant in Westchester, Lily sat gracefully on a chair, looking immaculate in her designer dress.

Chapter 753 Lily read the message Odell had just sent to her phone and immediately frowned irritably.

Half an hour ago, she had texted him to ask whether he was on his way. His reply was: “Sorry, something came up. Let's eat next time.”

When she asked Odell what had come up so urgently, he did not reply again. After a while, she took a deep breath and called her assistant.

Her assistant picked up within the first few rings, and she immediately ordered, “Get in touch with Odell’s driver. Ask him where Odell has been tonight.”

The assistant hurriedly replied, “Alright, Miss, I'll have that done right away.”

The next morning, the nurse woke Sylvia up. She got up and washed up, then she had a hearty breakfast.

The weather was rather pleasant today, and the warm sun shone into the room through the window slits.

The nurse watched Sylvia very closely to make sure that she would not leave the ward, so she had to return to bed. Chapter 753

The sunlight shone from such an angle that it touched the edges of the bed. She stretched her back toward the direction of the sun.

Suddenly, she heard the distinctive sound of heels clacking against the concrete floor. She turned her head just in time to see a young woman stepping into the ward. The visitor was slender and tall. She was dressed elegantly, and her refined taste shone

through her articles of clothing. She regarded people with her chin held high, a symbol of her prominent background, unyielding and dignified.

Wasn't this the daughter of the Springsteens, Lily Springsteen?

Sylvia’s expression shifted. She immediately reverted to her normal posture and smiled politely at Lily. “Miss Lily, to what do | owe this visit?”

Lily answered indifferently, “I came to see you.” Sylvia frowned and kept the same courteous smile hanging across her lips. “Thanks.”

As Lily approached the bed, her eyes immediately darted at Sylvia’s bulging belly. She asked with a sharp look in her eyes, “Are you pregnant?”

“Yes.”

“Who is the father?”

Sylvia tightened her hands and answered, “Not Odell.”

The look in Lily's eyes seemed to soften, and then a contemptuous sneer took over. “Didn’t you go abroad with the Second Master? Where is he now? Why are you by yourself?”

Sylvia lowered her head and answered, “I didn’t like it there, so | came back.”

“What about the Second Master? Didn’t he want to come back with you?” “Yeah.”

“I see.”

Sylvia was taken aback.

Lily peered at her coldly, all while maintaining the same elegant smile and noting, “That explains why you need another man to take you to the hospital.”

By another man, was she referring to Odell? Was she upset because Odell had brought her here last night? Sylvia quickly explained, “Miss Lily, please don’t misunderstand . | just happened to see Odell when | fell

on the road last night. He’s my ex-husband, so he couldn't just ignore me and took it upon himself to send me to the hospital.”

Lily's expression shifted.

Don’t misunderstand ? Did Odell not tell her about their agreement concerning the engagement?

Even before the two of them got engaged, they already agreed that they would not let the world know that they had gotten engaged under false premises until they had officially called it off. She was not expecting Odell to not keep Sylvia in the know. Wasn't he planning to salvage things with Sylvia? With this in mind, she smiled and said, “So, that’s how it is. | was wondering why he stood me up.”

Odell stood her up? Sylvia frowned and apologized sincerely, “I’m sorry, | won’t cause him any trouble again in the future.”

“It doesn’t matter. | know what he’s like, and | get why he’s doing this. And of course, I’m sure that you will live up to your promise.”

Sylvia felt her chest tightening. Lily's statement might have sounded pleasant, but she was subtly establishing her dominance . She was Odell’s fiancée , hence she had everything right to do this.

With this in mind, Sylvia smiled and said to her, “Miss Lily, there’s nothing to worry about. There are no longer any lingering feelings between me and Odell since our divorce. You have my word that | won’t get in between you two.”

Chapter 753 315)

Lily answered with a smile, “You don’t have to give me your word. | believe that you are an upright person. | have a meeting to attend, so | won't be taking your time. Goodbye.”

Without waiting for Sylvia to say anything, she turned and walked out. Just as when she arrived, she strutted out in an elegant, dignified manner. She was worlds apart from Sylvia who seemed completely disheveled, sitting on her hospital bed.

Chapter 754

Sylvia lay down again after Lily left. She pulled the quilt over her head to block the sunlight from shining into the room. Meanwhile , Lily stepped out and immediately ran into Odell who was next to the doorway.

His tall and lanky figure was leaning against the wall next to the door, and there was a distinctly dark look on his handsome face. Lily took a step back, startled by the sight of him. “Odell? Why are you here?”

Odell glared at her with mild contempt. “I should be asking you the same question.”

Alook of panic flashed across Lily’s face, then she promptly explained, “I’m sorry, | should have told you before | came. You didn’t reply to my message last night, and | became concerned that something bad happened to you, so | got in touch with your driver. That’s how | found out that you brought Miss Sylvia here, so | figured I'd come to visit her as well.”

“You came to visit her?” There was a tint of ice in his voice, and his current expression seemed almost demonic. It was a world’s difference from his usual mild and

indifferent temperament. This was the first time Lily had seen him in such a foul mood.

She had a gut feeling that she was not the true reason for Odell being so upset. After all, she had only come to make a statement and never said anything particularly nasty or hurtful to Sylvia.

With that said, she was still feeling particularly unnerved and apologized, “I’m sorry, maybe | acted selfishly, but | never held any ill will against her.” “Keep it to yourself. I’m not interested in you.” Lily’s expression transformed. This was the first time in her life that a man was telling her straight to her face that she did not interest him. It was especially worse considering it came from a man that she was desperate to have for herself!

She was a Springsteen! Numerous men would do everything in their power to have a chance with her! How could he say such things to her?

She frowned and stated, “Odell, don’t you think it’s very hurtful for you to say that?”

Odell pursed his lips and ignored her.

Lily promptly walked past him and stormed down the hallway. After she vanished, the hallway was filled with silence. The man wore the same intense look on his face. When he

looked at the woman in the ward who was wrapped in a thick quilt, the look in his eyes darkened momentarily.

Their divorce was something he could live with, but why would she even promise Lily that she would not step in between the two of them?

How much contempt could Sylvia have for him to want to draw such clear boundaries with him? Was she still thinking about Thomas who dumped her? Sylvia was discharged after two days in the hospital.

It was not because she disliked the hospital but because she missed Isabel and Liam. She could not wait to hear their familiar voices.

Upon returning to her house that afternoon, she immediately moved her chair to the wall connected to the next house and sat there, listening patiently for any signs of movement.

Even after an hour had passed, she could not hear the children’s voices. In fact, she could not even hear the usual voices of Sebastian and the others chatting about their day.

It was so quiet as if the next house was abandoned.

longer, Sylvia decided she had enough. She rose and

walked outside.

She looked at the next house. There was not a single person around the gate, not even the bodyguards that were usually posted there.

She stepped in front of the gate and tried to peer inside through the gaps. The yard was empty, and the door leading to the living room was closed. Not a single person could be seen.

She raised her hand to ring the doorbell. The doorbell seemed to echo and drone on endlessly, but nobody emerged from the house. It seemed like the house was empty. Everything was fine before she went to the hospital , so what suddenly changed? Why was there nobody at home?

She immediately took out her phone and called Odell. It only rang once before the call got disconnected. Sylvia frowned and send him a message after pondering over it for a while. She asked him, “Hey, have you moved out? Why is there no one home?”

Chapter 755

A minute later, Sylvia received a reply that read: “Yeah.”

It was a one-word reply, concise and brutal.

She tried to press for more information. “Why the sudden move? Did something happen?” Odell ignored her.

She sent yet another message. “Where did you move to?”

She received a pop-up that informed her that the message could not be sent because she was not on the recipient’s friend list and that she had to be on the friend list to send a message. Needless to say, it was because Odell had blocked her.

She frowned sullenly.

She had been staying in the hospital for the past two days and had never done anything wrong, so why did he block her out of nowhere?

An unbearable sadness rushed up to her head in an instant as she rubbed her eyes. After that, she flagged a taxi by the road.

If Odell would not tell her, she would find it herself.

The taxi took off to her appointed destination. She first

went to the Carters’ residence which was very quiet there,

and she could tell there was nobody home.

Then, she went to the Carters’ place in the Old District .

However, before she even stepped out of the car, Ben, who was posted at the gate, stepped up to the car and spoke to her through the car window, “Miss Sylvia, Master Carter has instructed us to tell you that you’re not welcome here. Please leave.”

Sylvia quickly asked, “Did he relocate all of you here?”

Ben answered, “Yes.”

Sylvia tried to crane her neck to get an angle into the house.

Ben quickly shifted to the side , shielding her view with his body. Left with no choice, Sylvia had to tell the driver to leave the place.

Immediately after turning around the corner, she had the driver drop her off at the junction. She crouched down like a thief and slowly snuck her way back to the vicinity of the Carters’ house.

She knew that the kids were in the middle of their winter break and should be at home most of the time. She did not need to see them. All she wanted was to just hear their voices.
