What Nancy Overheard

Seeing the smug look on Nancy’s face, Larry only got angrier. Da*n you, Nancy! Why have you chosen to be unreliable at a time like this? And you, Jory! What’s the matter with you? Why do you let her take the lead? Larry turned around to gaze out the window, choosing to ignore them.

But Nancy did not seem to notice Larry’s change in attitude. “Hey, Larry! We’re back!” she called to him in high spirits.

However, Jory had noticed the strangeness hovering around the man the minute he stepped into the room. Quickly, he approached Larry and whispered something into his ear.

“What’s that you say? You found Jake and Joan’s wedding location?” Larry asked, his eyes practically lit up in surprise.

“Yes, we did! I’m guessing you owe me one now. Right, Larry?” Nancy replied, still feeling smug. She lifted her chin and patted herself on the chest, apparently proud of her achievement.

Yes, I owe you big time! This is exactly the kind of information I’ve been waiting for!

It turned out that, when the couple was traveling abroad, Nancy and Jory happened to visit a church. It was there that she stumbled upon a conversation between the priest and a bunch of other people. Lo and behold, they were talking about the marriage between Joan and Jake!

Jory had been busy replying to the emails sent by the executives of his company; so he had been completely oblivious to whatever was happening in the background. With that, Nancy was the only one who overheard everything.

Fate must have secretly arranged for Joan and her to cross paths. It was amazing how information as critical as this one fell into her hands so easily!

“So? When’s the wedding? Did they mention anything?” Larry asked several questions at once as he anxiously tugged at her arm.

“According to the invitation, it’s to be held a week from now, but I have a feeling that they’re probably going to have it earlier than that,” Nancy replied in a low voice.

Good point. With Jake’s weird logic, he’s not exactly someone who’ll play by the rules. No, he’ll most certainly get everything ready in advance!

Larry clenched his fists tightly while remaining firm in his beliefs.

“Alright, we’ll split into two teams. One will stay here, the other one will go abroad,” Larry said sincerely, but his orders did nothing to hide his agitation. No matter what it takes, I’ll never allow Joan to marry Jake! If there’s no way for Joan to reject him, then I’ll have to do it for her!

Thud! The door to Larry’s office was suddenly flung open with great force. It was Jake.

“Nancy, you’re finally back! How goes your trip overseas?” Jake spoke to her in a callous tone as he stepped into the room.

Confronted by the man’s chilly expression, Nancy shuddered and retreated instinctively. At the same time, Jory stepped forward to shield his beloved wife. He would not want any danger to come to her.

“Jory, this is between Nancy and me. I advise you not to get involved if you know what’s good for you, otherwise don’t blame me for what happens next!” Jake warned the man, clenching his fists.

“At the end of the day, she’s my wife. As her husband, it’s my duty to protect her,” Jory tried to reason with him.

B*tch, let’s see where you can run this time! With one huge stride, Jake landed directly in front of Nancy.

“Tell me! Why did you raid my house that day? Were you the one who took Joan away?” Jake growled at Nancy while trapping her hand in a tight grip.

Jake’s intimidating presence and menacing tone frightened her to no end. Nancy was trembling all over as her other hand held onto Jory for support.

“Jake, whatever it is, you can take it up with me! Do you still call yourself a man going after a woman like that?” In one fell swoop, Jory wrenched Jake’s arm away from his wife and pulled her into his arms. He had to protect her and would not let any harm come to her.

Watching the scene unfold in front of him, Larry knew that Jake would not let Nancy go so easily.

“Jory, get Nancy out of here! I’ll deal with him.” He approached Jory and tapped on his shoulder, divulging his plan. But Jake, as though possessed by a demon, kept blocking Jory every step of the way. He was adamant not to let the couple escape.

Pride And Guilt

That’s right! Today, I want to end things with Nancy! She owes me an explanation! So what if she’s a woman? That doesn’t mean she gets to do what she pleases! There’s no rule dictating that women are to be forgiven regardless of what they do!

Jake glared at the couple with a murderous glint in his eyes.

“Jake, this is between you and me. Leave the others out of this. Don’t involve them!” Larry shouted at the man despite being in a restless state.

Ho! So you finally realize this feud is actually between you and me? Why didn’t you think of that when you sent your people to storm my villa? It’s too late now! Anyone who has ever helped you is my enemy by default! I’m not letting any single one of them get away so easily!

Jake scoffed at Larry, displeasure written on his face.

“That day, all of you joined forces, broke into my villa, and took Joan away from me!

“Unfortunately for you, Joan only has eyes for me now. She has long forgotten every single one of you! We’d have already tied the knot by the time she remembers everything! But don’t you worry. I’ll take good care of her and make sure she’s treated like a queen, for she’s my one true love!”

“Oh, knock it off already!” Abelyn charged into the room, cutting Jake off.

“Just take a look at yourself! Do you really think you’re deserving of any affection? Get it into your head! Even if you get Joan to marry you, you can’t get her to fall in love with you!” Abelyn was pretty blunt with her words. She was familiar with how Joan’s mind worked, despite having next to no idea how she could defuse the current situation.

Joan does not love Jake, but she is willing to marry him to repay a debt of gratitude. Thus, Jake took advantage of her weakness and bugged her time and time again to marry him until she eventually surrendered.

It was no secret that Joan had always hated Jake the most, despite being indebted to him. But her guilt soon subsided after she became a victim of Jake’s scheme.

“Ask yourself, Jake. How has Joan treated you and Faye in the past? And how are you treating her now? Later on, she’s bullied and accused. Has that got anything to do with you? And yet, here you are, still lying to her,” Abelyn gave an emotional lecture. She did not like how things had escalated. She could not accept the idea of Joan being the victim of so much injustice!

“Shut up!” Jake clutched his head in both his hands as he yelled in agony.

It took everything in me to forget about the past, and even more when I decide to make Joan my wife and start a new life together. Why do you have to come in and bring it all back? Why do you have to make me shoulder all my sins?

Abelyn tapped on Jory, who was standing next to her, and pointed to the exit. He immediately understood what she meant and quickly escaped with Nancy.

It seemed Jake had been harboring some guilt towards Joan all along!

Seeing him in such a sorry sight, Abelyn sighed.

“No! It’s not like that! Joan has always been mine! She still is, and forever will be! Because she can only belong to me!” Jake guffawed as he descended to madness.

Is he perhaps suffering from a psychological illness of some sort? Larry actually felt a tinge of pity towards the savage man before him.

By the time Jake regained his senses, Jory and Nancy had already left the office.

“Just you wait, Larry! Joan will definitely become my bride!” Jake declared before he left.

For a moment, Larry could not help but feel sympathy for the prideful man. What has happened in his life that made him turn out like this?

Larry walked to his desk and began sorting out his paperwork.

“Boss!” Caspian and Jessica barged into the room.

“You’re too late!” Abelyn scoffed at them. Then, she too walked away.

The two latecomers surveyed the room. Indeed, the three of them were the only ones in the entire office. Jessica rushed to Larry’s side and examined him thoroughly, which irritated the man even more.

Jake Is Suspicious of Larry

“Jessica, how could you be so free? Are you sure you have settled everything in the bookstore?” Larry asked gently as he patted her on the head.

He sounds just like his usual self! Looks like his mood is not affected. Jessica straightened up at once and heaved a sigh of relief.

To play safe, Larry decided not to share the updated news from Nancy with them right away since Jake had just stepped out. What if the cunning fellow turned back all of a sudden and overheard our conversation? In order to safeguard the success of our plan, I must continue to pretend that I have no idea about the updated news from Nancy.

Staring blankly at the door of his office, Larry’s creased forehead implied that something was bothering him at the moment.

Jessica was observing Larry’s countenance silently and could sense something amiss. She remained silent and waited for him to explain to her. To her disappointment, he remained silent as well. She was becoming restless due to the sudden pin-drop silence that ensued in the room.

“Let’s get together for a meal tonight,” Larry finally broke the silence when she was about to open her mouth.

On the instant, it struck her that Larry would pour out everything to them during the gathering. She nodded at him in acknowledgment and left Norton Corporation.

As dusk fell, both Caspian and Larry tidied their desk before they left for the restaurant to meet the others.

Since both Jory and Nancy were the ones who shared the news with him, Larry did not invite them to join their gathering this round. Moreover, he did not want to take the risk in case Jake smelled a rat, fearing that it would put both Jory and Nancy in deep water.

In a private room of a grand restaurant, Larry threw a glance at the door before he lowered his voice intentionally and said cautiously, “There is a piece of great news from Jory and Nancy this round. They managed to track something when they were overseas.”

“What kind of great news? ” Abelyn stood up and yelled excitedly.

“Hey, lower your volume and don’t interrupt. Let Larry finish his words!” Dustin snapped at her.

Both Dustin and Larry had clicked well lately by putting aside their jealousy toward each other. In fact, they were just like buddies at times. If Joan did not lose her memories, she would surely be delighted at how well both of them were getting along with each other at the moment.

“Therefore, I plan to make a trip overseas. Nonetheless, a few of us have to continue on standby mode here. We can’t easily let our guard down as Jake is far more cunning than how we imagine,” Larry announced sternly after sharing the latest information with them.

Without hesitation, Larry went overseas with Caspian and Jessica the next day. Meanwhile, Dustin, Jory, Abelyn and Nancy continued to ensure that their plan was working well.

In the meantime, Jake started to sense something awry and was suspicious of Larry.

Larry and his gang are unusually quiet lately. It’s really weird! Are they in the midst of something secretive? At the moment, he was leaning against the sofa in his office as his mind drifted into thoughts.

I presume Larry would confront me in exasperation at once when he finds out that Joan is still alive and will marry me soon. Yet, he seems to be extraordinarily cool about it without taking any action. Has he given up on winning her back? It’s impossible that he gives up out of a sudden!

Joan is undoubtedly the love of his life! He would definitely never let go of her easily! I’m convinced there’s something fishy going on so I must investigate it! As the saying goes, one should always keep one’s friends close and one’s enemies closer.

He picked up his phone and gave Della a call. “Go and find out what is keeping Larry occupied at the moment,” he enunciated every single word with a commanding tone.

How dare he speak to me in such a way, as if I were his subordinate! Della was infuriated by his tone and remained silent.

Sensing that Della was enraged, Jake softened and added deliberately, “Della, since both of us are in the same boat, if I can get married to Joan, you are actually one step closer to your dream, isn’t it?”

Yeah, he has a point. Once he marries Joan, Larry won’t be able to do anything by then. That would surely save my trouble to win his heart. Della cleared her throat and was about to agree with what he mentioned earlier. Jake added again, “In other words, you’re actually helping yourself as well by helping me.”

“Enough of that!” she snarled impatiently to stop him. His words are really irritating! He is actually planning everything for himself; yet, he makes it sound as if he is thinking of my wellbeing!

“You’d better be able to marry that b*tch as planned!” she hissed and hung up right away.

Once Joan Watts is married to Jake Wilson, I bet Larry would be in despair and give up on her forever!

Della slumped onto the sofa as she was lost in her thoughts. It never crossed her mind that Larry had already gone overseas!

To cover his tracks perfectly, he was keeping mum about it so none of the employees in Norton Corporation was aware of it.

Della Wonders Where Larry Is

Bang! Della strutted into Larry’s office directly as the door was flung open. To her surprise, there was no sign of him in the office.

As a workaholic, Larry usually spent most of his time in the office. She wondered why the man was not seated at his desk as usual.

Has he stepped out for lunch? She knitted her brows as she glanced at her watch. It can’t be! It’s not even time for lunch yet!

Coincidentally, Larry’s assistant stepped into his office with a pile of documents in her hands. “Ah! Ms. Duff, you are here,” she greeted Della softly as she placed the piles of documents on Larry’s desk.

“Where is your president? He’s supposed to be here as usual,” Della asked the assistant suspiciously.

The assistant was momentarily stunned before she forced a smile and explained calmly, “Mr. Norton has stepped out for a discussion on business collaboration with his new business partners. He’s occupied by the new plans lately and might not be back in the office so soon. Ms. Duff, maybe you can drop by again another day.”

I’m really impressed. Norton Corporation is developing significantly within such a short span of time! When he insisted to reinvent his company previously, I was still quite worried about him. It looks like he has made the right decision!

Larry is really no ordinary man. He’s really business-minded and has a good business acumen! Complimenting Larry on his capabilities silently, Della let out a deep breath before sitting down on the sofa. She was not in a hurry and intended to wait for him to be back.

The assistant became anxious when she sensed that Della was reluctant to leave at once. Stifling her anxiousness, she said courteously with a smile, “Ms. Duff, Mr. Norton won’t be back so soon. I think it’s better that you go back first.”

“It’s alright. You get back to your work first.” Della waved her away.

She had gotten used to waiting for Larry all this while, and did not mind waiting for him a bit longer again. Besides, she presumed that it would at most take him a few hours for the discussion pertaining to business collaboration.

The assistant was helpless and sent Nancy a message hastily to ask for help.

In the meantime, both Nancy and Jake were in their living room. “Ha! That b*tch went to look for Larry again!” Nancy rolled her eyes and growled in displeasure the moment she clicked open the message.

“Just let it be and let her wait there. After all, she would leave when Larry is still not back a few hours later,” Jory said placidly.

It sounds right. Nevertheless, if that b*tch drops by Larry’s office every day to wait for him, she might sense something uncanny! Our plan would surely be unveiled accidentally by then! Oh No! I can’t let it happen!

Ah! Let me humiliate the shameless woman to distract her attention and at the same time teach her a lesson. I’m sure she would be discouraged from dropping by Larry’s office for at least a few days!

Nancy took her jacket and stepped out at once.

“Where are you going?” Jory yelled at her as he tried to catch up with her.

“Norton Corporation!”

This woman is really impetuous! She’s stubborn and tends to act impulsively before we are married. My goodness, she is still the same even after she becomes a mother! Jory let out a deep sigh and dashed out after her.

No matter what, I will have to protect my woman!

At the Norton Corporation, Nancy greeted Della languorously as she stepped into Larry’s office, “Ah! Isn’t this Ms. Duff? Why are you here at this hour? You seem to be really free!”

Della stood up and had her guard up the moment she saw Nancy.

Why is she here all of a sudden? I’m sure it’s nothing good. Such a right timing? She’s already here not long after I entered the place. How does she find out that I’m here? Is she stalking me?

“Why are you here?” Della glared at her and asked in displeasure.

“What a ridiculous question! Ms. Duff, I should be the one asking you this question. Don’t you think so?” Nancy mocked her stupidity.

Huh! What right does she have to criticize me? After all, both Larry and I are single at the moment! Is there anything wrong if I come and look for him and even go after him? She should look at herself! Isn’t she humiliating herself when she’s rebuking me? As a married woman, is it appropriate for her to come all the way here all by herself?

I wonder how Jory would react once he finds out that his wife comes to look for another man without his knowledge!

“I’m here to discuss something with Larry…”

Bang! Before she could finish her words, the door was flung open and Jory emerged at once.

“Larry is not in. Let’s go back and come again another day.” Jory held Nancy’s hand straight away and was about to step out of the room.

The Wedding Ceremony

Huh! So Jory is aware of this! Della’s face turned grim in an instant.

Nancy grabbed the chance to put on a show by struggling and yelling exaggeratively, “What are you doing? Let go of me! I won’t leave if she refuses to leave as well!”

Jory shrugged her arm off deliberately and pretended to be infuriated by her. Putting on a grim look, he scoffed, “There are countless women without a sense of shame in this world. Do you want to be like them as well? I’m really disappointed with you!”

Upon hearing Jory’s harsh words, Nancy was somehow overjoyed and applauded silently by giving him a thumbs-up. On the other hand, Della was really offended by his sarcastic words.

“Jory Synder, what do you mean? Are you hinting that I’m one of them?” she was almost enunciating the last few words with gritted teeth.

In a blink of an eye, there was a change in her expression as a wave of fury surged from within her.

“Ms. Duff, I’m sorry for being blunt. I don’t mean it. I was just reprimanding my wife to wake her up!” Jory pretended to be embarrassed by making an insincere apology.

At the peak of her rage, Della stormed out of Larry’s office.

They are all foolish fellows with no manners! Once seated in her luxury car, she stepped on the accelerator pedal and sped off.

Larry was at the seaside, standing not far away from a church. “Caspian, is the information reliable?” he asked sternly with a solemn look on his face.

“Yeah, Larry, it’s provided by the pastor. I’m sure it’s true,” Caspian replied firmly.

Joan, you are finally here and I will get to see you again! Larry gazed at the church sorrowfully. Even though she has lost her memories, she still loves the sea! I bet that was why Jake arranged for the wedding ceremony to be held in the church by the seaside. However, she has forgotten about me!

Larry reminisced about their grand wedding years ago. Snippets of beautiful moments between them flowed into his mind like never-ending waves. We were deeply in love with each other at that time; yet, she has forgotten all about it!

The next day, Larry reached the main entrance of the church with Caspian and Jessica early in the morning. He waited desperately for the arrival of the wedding car.

“Here it is!” Caspian said excitedly as he patted Larry’s shoulder.

“Hold my hand, Joan, be careful,” Jake said gently and helped her out of the wedding car.

Joan raised her head and looked at the grand church in front of her. Despite the breathtaking view of the majestic church and the picturesque scenery, she felt uneasy as a series of inexplicable complex emotions started to well up within her.

Joan Watts, you must hold yourself back! The man who stands right in front of you now is Jake, your future husband! He has sacrificed a lot by taking great care of you and being protective of you all this while. There’s no other way to repay his kindness apart from being his faithful spouse for the rest of his life!

Nonetheless, love could never be forced.

The pastor furrowed his brows as he observed the bride and bridegroom for the day. The bridegroom’s face was undoubtedly lit up by joviality; yet, the visible sorrow in the bride’s eyes reflected her reluctance.

“Miss, do you really love him?” he approached Joan and asked meaningfully as he gazed at her with his penetrating eyes.

This was indeed a challenging question which put Joan in a dilemma. If she answered honestly, the pastor would surely call off the officiation of the wedding ceremony. If she lied to the pastor, it would indirectly indicate that she was not truthful to herself as well.

Forget about it! Everything is worth it as long as Jake and I can spend the rest of our life together peacefully.

“Yeah, I love him,” she forced herself to nod and reply instantly.

The pastor could sense that she was not being truthful to herself when she replied by avoiding having any eye contact with him. Shaking his head, he let out a deep sigh and walked away.

“Joan, what’s the matter? What did he tell you?” Jake approached her and asked softly.

Since the pastor was not one of his people, he would not be pressured by his background and easily succumb to him.

“Nothing actually. We were just chatting casually,” Joan replied nonchalantly.

Is she telling the truth? She doesn’t look good as well. As a bride, there is not the least bit of delight on her face! Jake’s heart was filled with utter uneasiness as he gazed at the woman in front of him.

A while later, the door of the church was closed. The pastor was about to start officiating the wedding ceremony.

Only a few guests attended the wedding ceremony. It was all arranged by Jake.

“Mr. Jake Wilson, are you willing to take this woman whose hand you now hold, to be your true and wedded wife; and do you solemnly promise to spend your whole life protecting her, taking good care of her…” the pastor began to read out the marriage officiant.

“I do,” Jake gazed at Joan lovingly and replied excitedly.

“Ms. Joan Watts, do you take this man to be your husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer…”

Staring at Jake who was standing right in front of her, Joan’s mind drifted into bewilderment.

No! I’m not willing! Tears started to well up in her eyes. Right that instant, Larry’s face flashed across her mind.

“Joan, what’s the matter with you? The pastor is waiting for your reply,” Jake urged her anxiously.

Jake Threatens Joan

As silence ensued, the place was engulfed by an awkward atmosphere.

The pastor looked at her and repeated the words of marriage officiation for the bride. Nevertheless, Joan was suddenly as motionless as a statue and could not utter any words.

What’s the matter with her? Is she going back on her word?

“Joan Watts!” Jake leaned closer to her ear and raised his voice.

“She’s not willing!” In a split second, the main door of the church was flung open. Everyone was stunned by the sudden emergence of Larry, Caspian and Jessica.

The moment Larry came into sight, Joan’s eyes lit up instinctively as her lips curved into a sweet, charming smile.

At that very moment, it struck Jake that Joan would never be able to get Larry out of her mind, even after she had lost her memories! Looks like I would never be able to defeat Larry and take over his place in her heart!

“Joan Watts, come with me,” Larry stretched out his right hand and said gently. Joan was momentarily bedazzled by his loving gaze.

All the guests gaped as they were overwhelmed by the scene.

Jake tightened his grip on Joan’s hand as if he was fearing that she would vanish into thin air at any moment.

What for? Looks like the bride does not have any feelings for him. What is the point of forcing her to walk down the aisle with him? The pastor shook his head and moved aside to take a seat.

“Jake, I’m really sorry,” Joan mumbled sheepishly.

“No way! Joan Watts, you can’t follow him and leave me alone! You’ve promised me earlier to be my wife, haven’t you? You ever mentioned that you dreamt of having a happy family with adorable kids. Have you forgotten everything?” Jake’s voice quivered as he yelled at Joan.

I have put so much effort into all these; yet, it still ends up in failure? No way! I can’t let Larry Norton defeat me!

“Jake, I really appreciate you for everything that you have done for me all this while. However, I can’t deceive myself. Being grateful is different from love. You’re the one forcing me to marry you all this while, but I don’t have any special feelings for you…” Joan tried to explain to him by all means.

Needless to doubt, Jake could sense that Joan had never fallen for him. Nonetheless, he still took the risk to have a bet with himself. He believed that Joan who was soft-hearted would give in to him eventually! To his despair, he was still the loser in the bet.

“Jake Wilson, do you think that you have set up a perfect plan without our knowledge? If you really have a clear conscience, why don’t you have the courage to let Joan know about the previous incidents? You’re really selfish and senseless by keeping everything from her. You’re a liar!” Larry glared at Jake with his blazing eyes and snickered.

In an instant, Joan kept her guard up by shrugging off Jake’s arm.

“Jake, what does he mean? You don’t have the courage to tell me about the previous incidents? Are you hiding something from me? What had happened previously? I suddenly recall how you kept telling me not to dwell on the past and look ahead.”

Jake’s anger was intensified. What have I done wrong? I have done everything for the sake of our future!

Wrapping Joan tightly in his arms, he tried to appease her as he consoled himself simultaneously. Jake Wilson, don’t panic! I’m sure that Joan hasn’t recalled the previous incidents. If she manages to recall everything, she would have left me earlier to look for Larry Norton instead of promising to marry me, doesn’t she?

“Joan, try to cool down and listen to me. It doesn’t mean that I don’t have the courage to tell you what had happened before. I’m just protecting you from enduring the torment again once you recall the incidents in the past.

Is Jake telling the truth? He’s just keeping everything from me to protect me?

By then, only the pastor and a few of them were still in the church as all the other guests had gradually left.

“Jake Wilson, Larry is the only man that Joan loves all this while. Why are you forcing her to marry you?” Unable to hold himself back any longer, Caspian yelled on behalf of Larry.

Out of a sudden, Jake laughed hysterically with a sense of ferocity in his eyes.

I shouldn’t have made a mistake by falling in love with Joan Watts. If she really follows Larry and leaves today, we can only be enemies for the rest of our life!

“Don’t go away with him. If not, we will become enemies for the rest of our life!” Jake hissed at her.

Joan was stupefied by his words. It never crossed her mind that he would have blurted out those words with such a ferocious look.

“J-Jake, I’m sorry but I can’t marry you…You’re not the man whom I love!” Joan stammered as she mustered up her courage to tell Jake.

She doesn’t love me? So Larry is the man she loves? Jake stared at Joan with his icy-cold gaze. In the end, I’m still a loser! What a joke! No matter how much I have sacrificed for her, her mind is fully occupied with another man!

Joan Makes A Decision

“So you’d rather leave me to be heartbroken?” Jake asked sorrowfully. Joan was aghast at his terrifying countenance at the moment. As he bit his lips hard to suppress the burning rage within himself, there was even abhorrence in his eyes.

Joan Watts, if you really opt for Larry today, I want you to be regretful for the choice you make today for the rest of your life!

Da*n it! How did Larry Norton know about this place?

“Jake, don’t waste your time and effort anymore. Just accept the fact that she doesn’t love you. If she really loves you, she wouldn’t be in hesitation. What’s the point of shackling both of you in a marriage without love?” Larry yelled apprehensively.

Even though Joan had not regained her memories, at least he was sure that she did not love Jake. That was already a great comfort for him.

Joan’s eyes were welled up with tears and she was seconds away from an emotional breakdown.
