They looked at the landline that kept ringing loudly and clearly, then Shirley and Fabian subconsciously shared a look.
After pausing for a few seconds, Shirley picked up the phone without hesitation.
Before she could say anything, she heard a familiar voice from the other end of the phone.
“Get Shirley on the phone,“ Carter ordered. Shirley's hand on the phone tightened.
“Didn't you hear me? Get someone named Shirley Brown to come to the phone. I know she's in the villa,“ Carter urged impatiently.
However, less than two seconds after he said that, Carter suddenly realized something.
“Shirley?“
“It's me.“ Shirley tried her best to keep calm. “ Carter, why are you calling this number?“
“I want to tell you that I'll be able to avenge our dead child soon.“ Carter's voice came over grimly.
His tone sounded deep and gloomy for some reason.
Shirley's heart skipped a beat. “Carter, what do you mean? What are you going to do?“
“You'll know what I'm going to do soon, but before this, I want you to come to meet me.“
Shirley wanted to contact Carter initially, so when he made this request, naturally, she did not hesitate to agree.
However, after Carter told her the meeting time and place, Shirley's heart sank inexplicably.
The feeling was like that of listlessness and loss, and it took over her heart immediately.
Over the other end of the phone, after hanging up, Carter went back to the basement where Jeremy and Eveline were trapped in.
With a blank look on his face, he threw bread and water into the pool, and then the corner of his lips lifted into a knowing and mocking grin. “For the sake of our relationship, I'll allow you two to eat something before I send you to hell.“
It sounded as if Carter wanted to end Madeline and Jeremy's lives.
However, this did not strike fear into Jeremy and Madeline. Carter knew they would not feel anxious because of this. As such, he pulled a stool over in a carefree and relaxed manner to sit next to the pool.
He lit a cigarette and exhaled some white smoke. He looked leisurely and content.
“Eveline, do you remember when we first met?“ Carter looked into Madeline's eyes and asked with a huge grin.
“Back then, I didn't know you'd be on the yacht.“
Madeline's gaze darkened. “You didn't know I'm on the yacht too?“
“That's right, I didn't.“ Carter's grin became wider.
Madeline suddenly came to a realization. “So, you're admitting that you have something to do with Ryan's death? The sudden explosion was not an accident, but instead, it was man-made. And the person who created this accident was you, Carter Gray.“
After she said that, the air in the basement seemed to stay silent for a long time.
A while later, Carter admitted with a smile.
“Yes, I deliberately made that accident happen. I was there to verify Ryan's death, and I coincidentally saved you.“
“Saved me?“ Madeline was amused. “Were you saving me? If you hadn't deliberately tried to kill Ryan, how would I be affected by the explosion?“
Confused, Madeline looked at Carter who had a huge grin on his face.

Carter could not listen to this any longer.

Carter cursed, pointing at Jeremy angrily.

When he saw Shirley staying silent, Carter slowly pushed the wheelchair forward.

Those words should have been sweet, but in that instant, they felt like a sharp knife through Shirley’s heart. She knew she could no longer stop Carter. Carter had already made up his mind.
When she saw Carter approaching the sea slowly, Shirley’s heart immediately split open. The cold winter wind overwhelmed her heart, and she felt a bone-chilling coldness.
“No! Carter, please don’t do this! Carter!”
Shirley cried out to stop him. She reached out her hand to him and used all she had to move her body to get close to Carter, but eventually, she fell out of the wheelchair.
When Carter heard the sound, he stopped in his tracks and turned around to take a look. He saw Shirley on the ice-cold floor. She lay there helplessly as she kept waving at him with all her might, tears drenching her face.
Carter felt his heart tighten, and he furrowed his brows. However, he chose to turn a blind eye.

Shirley reached out her trembling hand. She hoped that Carter would turn back to hold her hand, but he never did.
She was so close to him, and yet it felt as if they were miles apart, no longer within reach.

Just like Carter, Shirley thought something was wrong with her eyes.

“Eveline? It’s really you!”
Madeline could feel Shirley’s surprise at the sight of her. Madeline smiled and nodded. “Yes, it’s me. Get up first.”
“You’re still alive. That’s great!” Shirley was so excited that tears escaped her eyes, then through her blurred vision, she saw another figure. “Jeremy? Jeremy is alive too. This is great! You’re all fine!”
Madeline could see Shirley’s sincere hope that Madeline and Jeremy would be safe and sound. In contrast to Shirley, however, when Carter saw that the couple had escaped unscathed, anger and questions immediately came to his mind.
Despite the raging anger in his chest, Carter chuckled pretentiously.
“Jeremy, you sure are tough.”
Carter’s tone was sarcastic. He then looked at Madeline and concluded.
“It seems that I inadvertently saved you when I had sent her to you in hopes that you two can die together, am I right?”
Jeremy looked at Madeline tenderly before raising a sharp and proud eyebrow.
“Yes, thank you for bringing my wife to me. With her by my side, I believed that I need to live no matter what. I can’t stand by and let my beloved woman suffer with me.”
After listening to Jeremy’s answer, the hostility in Carter’s eyes grew stronger.
Madeline and Jeremy helped Shirley into the wheelchair. After sitting down, Shirley immediately moved the wheelchair up to Carter’s side and grabbed Carter’s hand tightly, preventing him from moving toward Jeremy.
“Carter, we’ll just end this here, okay? Stop obsessing over this. Listen to me, let’s surrender. Go surrender, okay?” Afraid that Carter would cause further harm to Jeremy and Eveline again, Shirley used all her might to grab Carter‘s sleeve and tried to persuade him again and again.
Despite being restrained by Shirley, the burning hatred in Carter’s eyes intensified.
“I told you, if there’s no way out for me, I will kill myself. No one can take action against me in my place.”
Carter‘s tone was firm, and his thoughts remained unchanged.
“Carter, don’t be like this.”
Shirley continued to persuade him.
“Listen to me, go surrender. No matter how long it takes, I will wait for you, Carter. We were wrong, so we should bear the corresponding punishment. Stop being so stubborn, okay?”
Carter lowered his eyes to look at Shirley, whose face was drenched with tears. He furrowed his brows tightly. He could not stand seeing Shirley begging him like this, but his hatred for Jeremy prevented him from giving in and agreeing to Shirley’s request.
Carter forcefully pushed Shirley’s hand away and walked toward Jeremy.
“Carter! Carter, don’t!” Shirley immediately speeded up to catch up with him.
Madeline was worried that Shirley would fall again, so she hurriedly walked over to hold Shirley.

After listening to Shirley’s pained words, Madeline understood how she felt. She had experienced this feeling before.
“Jeremy, how did you get out of the pool?” Carter voiced his doubts. He really could not figure out how Jeremy and Madeline climbed up from the deep pool filled with water.
Jeremy smiled knowingly when he was faced with the inquisitive Carter. “I told you, it’s all thanks to you for sending my wife to me. For the sake of the most beloved person, how could I allow something to happen to me, let alone allow something to happen to her before me?”

Jeremy’s answer enflamed the fire in Carter’s heart. A few seconds later, his lips pulled into a wicked smile.
“It seems that God wants the two of us to end this face to face. Okay, then we will do just that!”
Carter was about to make a move immediately after speaking. Judging from his actions, it seemed that he was carrying a gun.
“Carter, I advise you not to act rashly.”
