Ch. 1391..1395
Chapter 1391
Mr. Sanders walked Sherry to the entrance.
The parking lot of the nightclub was connected to the parking lot of the building next door.
Upon entering her car, Sherry could not resist the temptation to steal a look at the club next door.
It seemed rather tranquil outside the club. It was apparent from one glance that it was a very classy and high-profile venue. John was probably here to socialize with his business partners.
Sherry could feel her heart thumping rapidly when she recalled the sight of Caprice wrapped tightly inside John’s arms. Two years.
The child was now over two years old.
Although Sylvia would send her pictures of Caprice from time to time, this was the first time she managed to get a closer look at her even if it was from a distance.
She wondered if Caprice was just as adorable as she looked in the pictures.
“Miss, would you like to go back to the hotel?” The driver prompted.
“Not yet.”
She said as she promptly took out her phone and looked up information about the clubhouse online.
Just as she expected, the clubhouse was indeed the most reputable high-end clubhouse one could find in Glanchester. It was the prime venue for entertainment for the richest class in the city.
John was probably here for a mixture of work and entertainment.
After a short consideration, she grabbed a scarf and wrapped it around herself to cover up most of her face, then she got out of the car and walked into the clubhouse.
The club was very exclusive and only accepted members. into its premises.
Sherry managed to apply for a premium membership. She then spent some time chatting with the receptionist to pry whatever information she could. She managed to find out the general area where John could be found.
John should be inside one of the lounges on the third floor at this moment.
She took the elevator to the third floor and as soon as she walked out of the elevator, she noticed two muscular bodyguards further down the corridor standing by the entrance to a certain lounge.
They were John’s bodyguards.
She cautiously pulled the scarf up to her nose and shoved her hands in her pockets before walking down the corridor. She went to the room adjacent to John’s and pushed the door open.
It was a lounge as well.
The waiter was dressed in a vintage fashion and immediately went up to greet Sherry upon her entry, Ma’am, what would you like to drink?”
Sherry answered, “Anything to calm the nerves.” The waiter promptly supplied her with a pot of fragrant tea.
After the tea was served, Sherry promptly instructed the waiter, “Thank you, why don’t you head outside? I'd like some time alone.”
“Alright.” The waiter did not ask any further questions and proceeded to head outside, making sure to close the door on his way out.
The lounge was immediately filled with an eerie silence.
Sherry got up and walked to the window.
There was a balcony connected to the lounge. Upon closer inspection, it would appear that the two lounges shared the same balcony. The only thing partitioning the balcony into two was a short fence installed in the middle.
It was as if God was on her side.
She took a deep breath and threw off her scarf and overcoat that only served to constrict her movements.
Then, she pulled herself up the fence and landed on the other side.
The moment she planted her feet firmly on the ground, she saw a tiny figure only a short distance from her.
She froze.
Her eyes were fixed intently on the girl.
The girl was only a toddler, so short that she barely could reach Sherry’s knees. It was no surprise that Sherry did not notice her at all before scaling the fence since the girl was barely half the height of the fence.
The child would never expect someone to lunge through the fence and appear out of nowhere. She gazed at Sherry with her eyes widened and her cheeks puffed up like clouds.
She held an ice cream in her hands that she was still not finished with and wore a confused look on her face.
Chapter 1392
No words could describe how adorable she looked.
Sherry could feel her heart beating so fast that it would shoot out of her chest.
The sweet and innocent face, and her adorable gait, this had to be her daughter that she had been thinking of day and night! Sherry stared at her, completely dazzled.
Caprice stared back at her with a blank look on her face as if she was staring at an alien. Eventually, she began to babble, “Are you a thief?”
Sherry was struck speechless.
She felt her voice caught in her throat for several seconds which felt like an eternity. After a while, she said with a quick smile, “I'm not a thief, I’m here for you.”
Caprice muttered, “But | don’t know you.”
Sherry found herself at a loss again. For a moment, she almost felt like crying.
After a while, she scrunched her nose and asked with a smile, “Is your name Caprice?”
Caprice bobbed her head up and down. “Yeap.”
Sherry squatted close to her and stared into Caprice’s pearl-like eyes. “Is your father’s name John?” Caprice’s eyes seemed to glow up upon hearing the mention of her father, she nodded again.
“You have a grandmother and an aunt named Queenie, don’t you?”
“How do you know? Who are you?” Caprice looked at her curiously.
Sherry smiled faintly. “I’m-”
“Caprice?” Suddenly, the deep voice of a man vibrated from inside the lounge.
Sherry was taken with shock. She immediately darted toward and hid behind a large pot of plants placed at the corner of the balcony.
It was rather dim out on the balcony and with the large pot keeping her out of view. She doubted that she would be spotted unless someone gave her position away.
Caprice grew even more curious when she noticed how the stranger was behaving. She stared behind the pot, her eyes filled with intrigue.
Meanwhile, the sound of approaching footsteps was getting louder.
Sherry put a finger to her lips and signaled for Caprice to stay quiet
She pleaded desperately with her eyes.
Caprice stood still and looked at her with what was vivid confusion on her face.
Sherry felt like her heart was about to lunge out of her chest.
She hoped that the child would have inherited her genetics and should be rather smart in situations such as_ these.
As sweat trickled down her forehead, the approaching footstep suddenly came to a stop right at the threshold connecting the balcony to the interior of the lounge.
The lights inside cast a tall and slender shadow of a figure over the balcony.
Caprice suddenly turned around to look at her father, her back was now facing Sherry.
Sherry drew a deep breath and became stiff.
The man’s voice echoed across the balcony. “Caprice, what are you doing here? Why aren’t you answering your father?” Sherry watched as John crouched down to meet Caprice at eye level.
Since Caprice was facing Sherry with her back, all Sherry could only see was her silhouette from behind.
She was filled with so much nerves and agitation that she was having trouble breathing at this point. That was when she heard the girl answer, “I couldn’t hear you out here.”
John smiled and gently brushed her cheeks. “What are you doing here alone?”
“Eating ice cream,” Caprice said as she handed the half- eaten ice cream to John. “Try it, Daddy, it’s very delicious, I'll let you have some.”
Sherry could not hear John’s reply to this gracious offer but she could make out from the shadows that John had leaned into Caprice and finished what remained of the ice cream in one large gulp.
She was suddenly consumed with a strange sensation. She looked on from the shadows with her brows knit together tightly. After that, John thanked Caprice, “It’s delicious, thank you, my dear.”
Caprice smiled and answered endearingly, “You're welcome, Daddy.”
John smiled and informed, “Daddy is done with work, shall we go home now?”
Caprice answered agreeably, “Okay.”
Chapter 1393
John carried her into his arms.
Shortly after that, the duo disappeared from the balcony.
Sherry felt herself deflating as the tension had escaped. her body at last but what replaced it was a hollow, empty feeling. She sat on the ground and replayed the interaction she had witnessed in her mind. She wore a tight grimace the entire time. The b*stard John was a wonderful father to Caprice.
Such fatherly love was almost a foreign concept to Sherry considering her upbringing.
Caprice seemed to trust him wholeheartedly. lit was a sharp contrast to how she completely failed to recognize her mother.
Amid the darkness of the night, a silver car swerved out of the parking lot of the clubhouse and made its way toward John’s hous e.
The driver and a bodyguard were seated at the front of the
car.
John sat in the back with Caprice in his arms.
Something seemed to be on the child’s mind. Usually, she would be sound asleep by this hour but today she was staring out the window with a transfixed look in her eyes.
John turned to her and asked softly, “Caprice, what are you thinking about?”
Caprice answered with a sparkle in her eyes, “There was this strange person.”
“Who is it?”
The child was not great at keeping secrets. She
immediately revealed what she had seen back there. “She told me that she knew me, she even knows about Daddy, Grandma, Aunty, and everyone else but I’ve never seen her befor
e. John suddenly perked up with alert.
What? Who was this person?
He concealed the alarm in his eyes and asked softly, Caprice, was it someone you saw today?” y
He was by her side pretty much the entire night. Save for that brief duration when he let her play by herself on the balcony while he was inside. He doubted that she would have the chance to meet anyone outside of his
supervision at all. Caprice seemed to have realized something and quickly covered her mouth with her palms.
John squinted suspiciously and leaned in close to her to whisper into her ears, “Caprice, I’m your daddy. I’d share everything with you, so you have to do the same for me, shouldn’t you?”
Caprice seemed conflicted by this, she expressed worriedly, “But she doesn’t want you to find out.”
John was immediately alarmed by this. Someone who did not want to risk being discovered by him? What did this person want with Caprice?
He gently brushed Caprice’s cheeks and said patiently, Caprice, it might be a bad person if they don’t want me to know about them. What if they hurt you?”
Caprice frowned. “She’s not a bad person, she’s very pretty! Her eyes were a little red but they were very bright, like shining star
s. John scowled upon hearing this. Someone beautiful? Red eyes that seemed like stars? “Also...” It seemed like Caprice was having a hard time trying to express what was on her mind. John probed patiently. “What else? Do you think she’s trustworthy?”
“Mmmm.” She nodded fervently upon hearing this notion.
John grimaced, a sharp look flashed across his eyes. He
((
felt his emotions becoming turbulent immediately.
He subconsciously clenched his hand into a fist.
He quickly reached for his phone in his pocket and opened a specific album that was password protected. Inside it was a picture « He showed the photo to Caprice and asked, “Caprice, is this the person you're talking about?”
Caprice took a look at the picture of Sherry.
John pursed his lips and held his breath.
There was nothing but a deathly silence inside the car. It was so quiet that they could hear the wind gushing in from outside. After several seconds, Caprice finally answered with a
firm nod.
She turned to look at John, her eyes mesmerizing as usual. “Daddy, do you know her? Who is she?”
John smiled faintly, there was now an inscrutable look welling inside his eyes. Nobody could tell what was on his mind.
He told Caprice, “It’s a secret, | can’t tell you just yet.
Immediately after that, he turned to the driver and ordered urgently, “Turn around! We're going back to the clubhouse!”
Chapter 1394 The driver was spooked by John’s sudden cry and immediately sprang to the task. “Yes sir, right away.” Caprice shrank into her seat.
She slowly scuttled over to John’s side and wrapped her tiny arms around John’s. “Daddy, is she a bad person? Don’t be angry, | pro mise to not talk to her again.”
John suddenly jolted back to his senses and realized that
he must have scared her with his sudden outburst.
He pressed Caprice to his chest so she would not see the severe look on his face.
After a moment, he took a deep breath and said softly, I’m sorry Caprice. Did | scare you?” Caprice weakly shook her head and muttered, “I don’t want to make Daddy angry.”
John was relieved to hear this. “I’m not angry with you Caprice. This person isn’t a bad person, but she’s not exactly a good pers on either. You'll understand when
you're older. Daddy just happened to lose his cool, I’m doing fine now.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really, | wouldn’t lie to you.”
He said as he drew away from Caprice so he could take a look at her face.
Caprice immediately looked up and stared straight into his eyes.
John had recomposed himself and seemed like his usual self. He smiled affectionately at Caprice. After noticing that her father had returned to his usual self, Caprice seemed very pleased as well. John smiled. “Did | scare you?”
Caprice muttered, “Hmm.
)
John quickly apologized, “It’s my fault, it won’t happen again.”
Caprice smiled and sunk into his arms.
John wrapped his arms around her, a dark glow returned to his eyes as he realized that they were nearing the clubhouse again. Two years. You decided to return at last, Sherry Fowler.
Soon, the car stopped outside the clubhouse.
John put his arms around Caprice and instructed, “Tell the staff that | lost something in there and have them seal off the entire bu ilding immediately.”
The bodyguard nodded affirmatively and quickly got out of the car to make his way toward the clubhouse. The security measures were implemented swiftly afterward. It did not take long before a crew of bodyguards surged out of the building and cut off all the exit points.
Caprice looked at John again.
John’s expression immediately grew mild when he felt: Caprice’s eyes on her. He turned to her and spoke gently, “Don’t worry Caprice. The woman you saw just now happened to have stolen something from Daddy some time ago so now we're going to find her.”
Caprice protested. “But she said she wasn’t a thief.”
John said without a change in expression, “She lied to you.”
Caprice seemed upset by this. “Is she a liar?”
John explained patiently, “Yes, she’s very good at deceiving people, even Daddy fell for her tricks in the past. It’s only natural that liar, she won't get you again.”
“Hmm.” Caprice nodded firmly.
John smiled warmly and carried her out of the car.
The moment he stepped out of the car, a sharp and authoritative look gleamed across his eyes.
At the same time as he was entering the clubhouse with
Caprice in his arms, a white car revved its engines in an adjacent parking lot and promptly swerved into the main road. Inside the car, Sherry tried to calm her beating heart while urging the driver, “Go faster.”
“You got it, miss.” The driver stomped the gas pedal.
The car quickly vanished from the street and merged into another part of the district.
They could no longer see the clubhouse through the rearview mirror.
Sherry breathed a sigh of relief.
The driver was quite familiar with Sherry and upon seeing her in this state, he casually enquired, “Did you find your target at last?
Sherry sighed sourly. “I sure did.”
Chapter 1395 The driver joked. “You're usually the one on the chase, it’s interesting to see the tables turned around for once.”
Sherry expressed with a tired sigh, “I can’t confront this man just yet, all | can do is bide my time and hide for now.
It was fortunate that she made it out shortly after John left with Caprice. If she had dallied around a moment longer, she would be caught by John.
She wagered that Caprice could not keep her lips sealed and eventually confessed everything to John after getting into the car with him.
There was no chance that she would hide a secret from John considering how close the two were. Just the sheer thought of the bond the two shared was searing to Sherry.
If it was not for his underhanded move of breaking into the confinement center to take Caprice away from her two years ago, Caprice would undoubtedly choose her over him any d ay of the week!
An hour later, inside the lobby on the first floor of the clubhouse. John was seated on the sofa with Caprice in his arms.
The personnel in the clubhouse along with the team of security forces had rummaged through every corner of the entire clubhou se not just once but twice. They eventually came to John, fearful of his wrath.
Caprice had fallen asleep by this point.
John carefully balanced her in one hand while he flipped through the stack of documents with his other hand. It was a compiled list of all the registered members at the clubhouse.
When he arrived at the last page, he immediately spotted the name ‘Sherry Fowler’, it was the latest entry.
It would appear that she had only registered this very night.
He was puzzled by this. His coming here with Caprice was a last-minute decision, how did Sherry come to know of it? He fell into deep thought, then he picked up his phone and noted down the phone number Sherry registered with.
The manager observed what he was doing and informed cautiously, “Master Stockton, we had no idea that Miss Sherry was invo Ived with you at all. If we knew, we'd have informed you the very moment she stepped through the entrance.”
John returned the stack of documents to the manager
after saving Sherry’s contact. He smiled courteously and pardoned the manager. ‘It’s alright. If you see her again, please make s ure she doesn’t sneak away.”
The manager answered confidently, “Yes, sir. If we ever see her again, | promise you that we won’t let her get away.” John saw that there was no need to prolong their conversation so he carried Caprice and walked out. Nobody spoke the entire way home.
By the time they arrived back at the house, it was already midnight.
The rain outside had progressed from a gentle trickle to a downpour.
John took Caprice and quickly trotted into the house.
The lights inside the house were still on.
As soon as he walked inside, Madam Stockton, Queenie, and Julie came out to greet him.
Madam Stockton led the charge and asked John
anxiously, “John, why did you come home so late today? Is Caprice asleep already?”
“Yeah.” John stepped up to her and carefully passed the sound asleep Caprice to her, then he promptly unbuttoned his jacket.
Madam Stockton carefully took the girl, an affectionate
look surfaced on her face when she observed how peacefully Caprice was sleeping.
Julie approached John. “Here, give me the coat.”
John obliged and handed her the coat, then he took Caprice back into his arms.
Madam Stockton seemed slightly perturbed by this and complained a little, “Come on, let me hug her just a little longer, won’t you She gestured for John to hand Caprice to her.
John refused to yield. “It’s very late and she needs to rest. You can hug her all you want tomorrow.”
With that, he took Caprice and went straight back to the
bedroom.
Madam Stockton grimaced, it was as if John did not trust her to not wake Caprice up!
Everyone knew that the real reason was that he was very possessive of his precious daughter.
As upset as Madam Stockton was, she could not fault him for it. She tried to follow John into the bedroom to get one last look at F Queenie and Julie both trailed after her.
They watched silently as John took off the child’s coat in one swift, practiced motion. After that, he tucked her into bed and made
