Ch. 1436..1440
Chapter 1436
Chapter 1436 Sherry pursed her lips and said nothing else.
It was already late at night when she finished getting bandaged. She sat in the car and leaned against the car seat wearily, wanting to close her eyes and sleep.
However, even after a long time, the car did not start.
She could not help but open her eyes, which locked into a pair of beautiful almond eyes.
Carl was right in front of her, appraising her with a hand on his chin.
Sherry frowned at him. “Get away from me.”
“Tsk... Sherry, | just saved your life. Is that your attitude toward your savior?” Carl spoke and approached closer. Sherry curled her lips and raised her fist at the same time.
Carl's expression changed as he immediately sat back in the driver’s seat.
However, he still did not drive. He lowered his seat so he was almost lying down with his long legs casually resting on the steering wheel.
With his head resting on his arm, he tilted his head and looked at Sherry. “Aren’t you here for business? Why did you use my identity to attend the Stocktons‘ party? You
were even chased out by the security guards. Did you do something behind my back?” Sherry closed her eyes wearily and said, “It’s none of your business.”
“You used my identity.” He narrowed his eyes. “And you're my future wife. If anything happens to you, I'll be all alone in the future.”
Sherry frowned in annoyance. “I'll call your mom if you say any more nonsense.” “Geez, fine. Did you raise a man here behind my back?” Sherry opened her eyes and took her phone out of her bag.
Carl immediately sat up. The seat beneath him bounced back. He quickly said, “Don’t be mad, don’t be mad. I'll drive you back to the hotel now.”
Then, he started the car. Sherry put the phone away as well. She glanced at him again, then leaned back and closed her eyes.
After a while, just as the car was about to drive to the hotel, she suddenly thought of something and said, ” Wait, don’t go back to that hotel yet.”
Carl slowed down. “Why not?” Sherry asked him, “Which hotel are you staying in now?” Carl's eyes lit up. “Why? Do you want to stay with me? I'll
tell you now, but there’s only one bedroom in my suite. If you go there, you can only bunk with me.”
Sherry was in no mood to bicker with him and simply said, “Just go to your hotel first.”
Carl's lips curled up happily. “Sure thing.”
He picked up speed.
After passing through several traffic lights, the car drove to a five-star hotel. Carl’s room was in the top presidential suite.
Sherry took out her ID card, got a room for herself, and went into the elevator with him.
The space in the elevator was limited. Carl stood lazily opposite her, leaning against the wall. His eyes flickered from her injured knee to her face.
He asked with a smile, “Sherry, did you come with me here because you were afraid that someone would find you in the hotel you're staying in?”
Sherry pursed her lips and ignored him.
Carl looked at her obviously depressed face. His eyes flickered, and he said, “Tell me who that person is and I'll take care of him for you. I'll make sure he stays away from you in the future.”
Sherry looked up at him. “John Stockton.” Carl paused. “Who?”
Chapter 1437
Sherry crossed her arms. “The richest man in
Glanchester, the master of the Stockton family. Go ahead,
then.”
Carl pursed his lips and laughed dryly. “Heh... I’m not
afraid of him, but we’re in Glanchester now. This is his territory, after all. Give me some time. | have to make a long-term plan.”
Sherry ignored him. She knew Carl too well. Although he was like a dandy, he was not a fool. If it was someone he could bully, he would be sure to beat them to death, but
when it came to John, he was just playing lip service. It was impossible to offend John easily. The elevator soon stopped at her floor.
She took a step and limped out.
Carl followed her all the way to her room.
Sherry turned back to him. “Master Sager, do you need something else?”
Carl leaned his back on the wall by her door and said with a smile, “No, | just thought that the weather here is too cold and wanted to ask if you need someone to warm your bed at night.”
Sherry said, “No.”
“Oh, okay,” Carl turned around and went out.
Sherry immediately locked the door behind her and lay
down on the bed.
The room was quiet, and she was obviously very tired, but she could not sleep. As soon as she closed her eyes, the scenes of her being carried out by the security guards flooded her mind uncontrollably.
The cold words of Jake and Janine, Madam Stockton and the others‘ cold and contemptuous eyes, and that man’s hatred for her...
The tip of her nose felt sour, and she pressed a pillow to
her face in annoyance.
Outside the door, in the corridor, Carl stood by the door
after coming out.
When he did not hear any sound after a while, he finally moved toward the elevator. At the same time, he took out his phone and sent a voice message. “Send me Sherry Fowler’s whereabouts these past few days, and check her relationship with John Stockton, the master of the
Stockton family.”
Meanwhile, two streets away was the hotel where Sherry had been staying before.
The lobby on the first floor was brightly lit. Not far from the entrance, a large and small figure was sitting on the sofa.
The hotel manager personally came over with tea and snacks. “Master Stockton, the weather is cold. Have some tea and something to eat.”
John pursed his lips. “Thanks.”
“You're welcome.” The hotel manager put down the tea and food, then retreated to the side.
John looked at Caprice. “Are you tired, Caprice?”
Caprice shook her head. Her large eyes looked toward the entrance of the hotel, and her small mouth could not help but mutter, “Why isn’t Mommy back yet?”
John’s eyes darkened for a moment. It had been almost three hours since she ran away from Glanchester Hotel. It was almost midnight, so she should be back by now.
T Did she not dare to come back because she guessed that he brought people here to stop her? He took out a box of children’s snacks and handed it to
Caprice. “Just wait. She might have been delayed by something.”
“Okay.” Caprice took the snack and nibbled on it.
John looked toward Peter and a few bodyguards standing not far away. “You guys disperse first. Come out when she comes back.”
Peter understood what he meant and walked away somewhere else with the bodyguards. The surroundings were quiet. At this time, almost no one came in and out of the hotel anymore. John closed his eyes somewhat wearily.
However, as soon as he closed his eyes, the image of her being held down wretchedly by two security guards and being scorned mercilessly by her parents came to his mind.
Chapter 1438
Soon, he opened his eyes again.
That woman was able to get her hands on the invitation for Young Master Sager, so she must have an ulterior motive.
As long as she was willing to tell him carefully what she had done before and after getting the invitation, then
obediently admit her mistake of leaving for two years, since she went to such great lengths to see Caprice, he could give her one last chance and let Caprice call her
Mom.
However, time passed little by little, and it was almost one in the morning. Caprice also fell asleep in his arms, but that woman still did not come back.
Did she not plan on coming back?
His expression was broody, and he took out his phone to pull up her number.
Just as his finger was about to touch the screen, he
quickly withdrew his hand again. She was the one who made a mistake and refused to admit it.
Why should he call her?
He immediately put the phone back, then picked Caprice up and walked out.
Peter and several bodyguards immediately came over
from the shadows.
John looked at Peter. “Leave two people here to keep an eye out and tie her up immediately when she comes back.” “Yes, sir,” Peter quickly replied and turned his head to instruct the two bodyguards.
John carried Caprice straight to the car.
After more than half an hour, the car arrived at the Stockton family villa and stopped outside of the courtyard where he lived. John got out of the car with Caprice in his
arms. Madam Stockton, Julie, and Queenie immediately went up to him.
Madam Stockton looked at the sleeping Caprice and said with some displeasure, “John, where did you bring Caprice? It’s so late.”
John ignored her and walked straight inside while carrying Caprice. The lights in the courtyard were on.
Madam Stockton also saw his gloomy and unpleasant expression. Her eyes flickered, and she pursed her lips and said ina lighter voice, “John, Sherry actually went and did something so bold as to steal an invitation. She must be wanting to pester you again because she can’t survive alone outside. Don’t fall for her tricks again.”
John stopped as his gaze turned cold. “I know. You can go
back and rest now.”
His voice was very grim.
Madam Stockton quickly closed her mouth.
John carried Caprice and continued to walk forward.
Queenie, who followed Madam Stockton, saw that John was about to go in and quickly asked, “John, do you know where Sherry went?”
John stopped again and turned to look at her gloomily through his glasses.
Queenie paled in fright and shut her mouth at once.
John glanced at Julie standing by the side. “Julie, come in for a moment.”
Julie’s eyes lit up as she quickly followed him.
Entering the house, John handed Caprice to Aunt Wanda and looked at Julie who just came in. Julie stopped two meters away from him and asked softly, “Do you need me for something?” He asked, “When did Young Master Sager come to Glanchester?”
Julie replied, “It should be a few days ago. | only found out through Master Carrel. He has a friendship with the Sager family from Westchester and said that Young Master Sager wanted to visit you, so | gave Master Carrel an invitation to pass to Young Master Sager.”
“Are you sure that Master Carrel gave the invitation to Young Master Sager?”
Julie thought about it and said, “Master Carrel is very trustworthy. If he didn’t deliver it, or if he lost the invitation, he would have told us.”
John narrowed his eyes.
In that case, the invitation must have been delivered to
Young Master Sager.
Chapter 1439
Sherry did know a lot of people in Westchester. Even Mrs. Carter was her good friend. However, Westchester and Glanchester were far apart, and Odell Carter had nothing to do with the Sager family.
She should not have gone to Odell for help. In that case, which friend did she ask to ‘borrow’ the invitation from Young Master Sager?
“John, | don’t think Ms. Fowler borrowed the invitation,” Julie looked at his face and said in a small voice. John looked at her.
Julie thought of something and said, “Glanchester will be holding the annual Business Association conference in a week. Master Carrel will be there, and he said that Young Master Sager will attend as well. You can just ask Young Master Sager face to face.”
John’s expression changed slightly as he hummed.
Looking a little tired, he raised his hand and pressed it to his temple, then said to her, “It’s late. You can go back to rest now.”
Julie smiled at him. “Okay. You rest early too.
John nodded toward her with a gentle expression.
Julie walked out with a smile.
Outside, the night was silent and cold.
Julie had just come out when she ran into Madam Stockton and Queenie.
“Julie, what did John say to you?” Madam Stockton hurriedly asked her.
Julie smiled and held Madam Stockton’s arm, leading them outside while saying, “He just wanted to know if the invitation was delivered to Young Master Sager.”
“Why is he asking that? Does he still not believe that Sherry stole the invitation?” Madam Stockton grumbled unhappily.
Julie said with a smile, “I don’t think so. | think he’s just asking about it normally. Since Young Master Sager did come to Glanchester, it’s only natural for John to ask
about it.”
Madam Stockton snorted coldly. “Whether it’s true or
not, he’d better not have anything to do with Sherry
again. Even if | die, | won't let a woman who’s also a thief like her be my daughter-in-law!” “She doesn’t seem to want to be your daughter-in-law
either...” Queenie muttered in a low voice.
Madam Stockton instantly glared at her.
Queenie pursed her lips.
Julie took Madam Stockton’s hand and said gently, “What nonsense are you saying, Mom? Don't think too much. and get some rest.”
Madam Stockton still had a cold expression. She was upset at the thought of Sherry coming back.
She was in no mood to listen to Julie’s advice now. She broke away from Julie’s grip and was so angry that she stormed back to her own place.
“Mom...” Julie revealed a helpless look and turned to Queenie. “Queenie, why don’t you talk to her?”
“If you couldn't get through her, then neither can I,” Queenie said sullenly and also turned to walk away.
Julie sighed. Only after they were all far away did she curl the corners of her mouth into a pleased smile.
That woman disgraced herself in front of all the friends and relatives of the Stockton family tonight. Madam Stockton valued the family’s reputation the most, and so did the elderly members of the Stocktons.
Sherry had looked miserable when she was held down by the security guards and when she ran away. She was just like a street rat.
If she had a shred of dignity left, she would not come back to pester John anymore.
Two days later, it was almost New Year. Glanchester was also a famous tourist city, so the streets were replaced with a lively and festive air.
That evening, the silver MPV drove out from the underground parking lot of Stockton Tower as usual.
Inside the car, John sat in the back seat with Caprice in his arms. His eyes looked at the street outside the car window through his glasses.
Not long after that, the car passed a hotel in the city. J
The man said in a low voice, “Stop the car.
Chapter 1440
The driver quickly stopped the car.
John carried Caprice out of the car and went straight into
the hotel.
The hotel manager saw him coming and quickly
welcomed him, saying carefully, “Master Stockton, Ms. Fowler still hasn’t come back today.” John gave him a small smile. “Please take me to her
room.”
The hotel manager instantly showed a troubled
expression. “That's... Our hotel has a rule that no one is
allowed to enter a guest's room when the guest is not present.”
John’s eyes darkened. His face which still carried a modest smile was gloomy.
The hotel manager’s expression changed, and he quickly changed his tune, saying, “Everyone except for you, Master Stockton. I'll take you there immediately.”
John smiled. “Sorry for the trouble.”
“It's no trouble at all.” The hotel manager raised his
hand to wipe the cold sweat on his forehead and quickly led John inside.
The elevator went up to the eighth floor.
The hotel manager took the key card and opened the
room door.
It was a single room with a large bed. The room had been cleaned, so it was neat and tidy. After a general sweep, John walked in with Caprice in his
arms.
The closet beside the entrance still held her clothes and
shoes. Most of the clothes were formal attire such as
shirts and pants while the rest were warm clothes. Her luggage was also placed inside. Her things were obviously still there, but where was she?
It had been three days. Why had she not returned?
Did she still not dare to come back because she was afraid that he would trap her here? Or was it because she could
not bear to show her face after how wretched she looked when she ran away that night?
His eyes flickered, and he looked at the hotel manager with a smile. “Can you give me a key card for this room?” The hotel manager froze.
John continued to smile.
The hotel manager immediately handed the key card in his hand to John.
John said, “I want to stay here for a while. You can go back to work. There’s no need to follow me anymore.” The hotel manager answered and left.
John held Caprice and walked around the room.
“Daddy, is this where Mommy lives?” Caprice suddenly
asked.
John said softly, “Yeah.”
The little girl looked around and asked, “Where’s Mommy? Why isn’t she here?”
John’s eyes darkened, and he said, “Maybe she went out because there was something urgent.”
“Will she come back?”
John narrowed his eyes. “Her stuff is all here. She'll be back.”
2
Two blocks away from that hotel was a five-star hotel. The door and the windows were closed, and the warm air was quiet.
There was only the sound of Sherry typing on the
keyboard. She was sitting in front of her desk, working. She brought forward all the matters that she had to accomplish in the next month.
Only by busying herself would she stop thinking about Caprice and the cold and contemptuous faces of that man and those people.
Knock knock.
Aknock sounded abruptly at the door.
“Come in.” Sherry faced the computer screen and continued to work.
A tall figure came behind her and cast a shadow over her. Sherry turned around to look.
Wearing sunglasses and a pink shirt, Carl bent over with his arms folded on the back of the chair behind her.
