Ch. 1656..1660

Chapter 1656

Chapter 1656 Sherry nodded.

“Don't worry. It doesn’t matter whether | get married now or later on, but one thing | can say for sure is that I’m not going to be coming back here,” Carl suddenly added.

Sherry shot a look at him. Carl smiled charmingly at her and seemed to be waiting for her to say something.

Sherry was made slightly uncomfortable by the way he was looking at her and quipped, “It doesn’t matter to me whether you come back or not, so why are you telling me this anyway?”

Besides, he was able to easily intimidate Madam Sager and the others with just a little bit of posturing, thus there was nothing she needed to worry about.

Carl's eyes darkened ever so slightly, but he quickly collected himself and smiled nonchalantly again.

“| just wanted to tell you that, no reason.” As he said this, he gently grazed Sherry’s cheeks with the tips of his finger. Sherry was upset by this. “Carl, what’s your problem?”

Carl cocked an eyebrow and provoked her haughtily, “What, are you going to beat me up?

Sherry was speechless. All she did was roll her eyes in response.

Then, she went towards the garden, and Carl immediately followed her.

It was a very large garden. At one glance, one could immediately notice that it was very. well taken care of. There was a vast variety of flowers and trees, and the bushes were delicately trimmed.

Sherry barely had time to delight in the tranquility of the garden before the butler showed up to inform them that the banquet had started and that they should head inside.

With that, they went into the banquet hall. It was a classic banquet. Sherry sat between Lisa and Carl, and seated at the same table with them were Madam Sager, Ron, and Anne.

They were still rather malevolent toward Sherry but knew better than to directly express their attitude with Carl and Lisa at the table. Still, they would make subtle jabs at her from time to time and make remarks about how she lacked womanly grace.

Sherry barely paid attention to their remarks as she turned her mind to the food.

At one point, she felt the urge to go to use the toilet.

“Aunt Lisa, I’m going to the toilet,” she told Lisa.

“I'll go with you,” Lisa said prepared to rise from her seat.

Sherry hurriedly stopped her, “No, it’s alright. | can go by myself.” Lisa insisted on going with her.

That was when Carl interjected. He rose from his seat and came behind Sherry. “I was just about to go to the toilet too. I'll go with her instead.”

Lisa sat back down and issued a command, “Alright, make sure you stay with her.”

“| got it.” Carl nodded and took Sherry’s hand.

Seeing as they were in front of a gathering of relatives and friends of the Sagers, Sherry knew better than to fling his hand away. She went with the flow and let herself be led away.

They went toward the toilet.

Carl did not enter the men’s toilet but leaned against the wall next to the women’s toilet instead and motioned like an usher. “Go on, I'll wait for you here.”

Sherry asked suspiciously, “I thought you wanted to go to the toilet.” “| had a mild stomachache just now, but now I’m fine.” Sherry shot a skeptical look at him, then she left it at that and went into the women’s toilet.

After she finished her business, she nudged the door open and went to the sink to wash her hands. That was when she stumbled into Ada who happened to be using the toilet as well.

She was Ron’s niece and would also frequently visit the Sagers. Madam Sager was rather fond of her.

Sherry had heard some rumors from Lisa that Madam Sager intended to pair Ada with Carl. She recalled meeting Ada several times in the past though most of their encounters were at Car!’s office.

She could tell that Ada had a thing for Carl. As soon as they made eye contact, Ada scowled and glared at Sherry, completely unprovoked.

Sherry ignored her entirely and only swept a passing glance at her before walking toward the sink.

Chapter 1657

Ada approached the sink as well and asked snappily, “Miss Sherry, | believe this isn’t the first time we met. Have your parents never taught you that you should greet someone you know?”

Sherry began to wash her hands while responding disinterestedly, “It doesn’t seem like you greeted me either. Have your parents neglected to teach you that as well?”

Ada stuttered and had no response to this. Her face grew red.

Sherry was in no mood to continue squabbling with her. She had finished washing her hands and was wringing her hands to dry them. The sleeves on her left arm parted slightly and revealed a large scar left behind from the previous accident, which was imprinted on her arm.

She immediately took notice of this and pulled back her sleeves as subtly as she could, then she turned and walked out of the bathroom. She marched out in a haste and did not notice the look in Ada’s eyes.

Carl was still waiting for her outside, and after she emerged, they went back into the banquet hall.

Ada had just exited the toilet when she watched the two stepping into the banquet hall together. She scowled and was immediately filled with jealousy and scorn. “How dare some vile, disgusting woman like you try to steal him from me?!”

It was still very lively inside the banquet hall. Sherry and Carl returned to their seats. Anne was busy chatting with Madam Sager along with her daughter-in-law.

Madam Sager was smiling from ear to ear, but the moment she saw Sherry returning with Carl, she erased the smile from her face in an instant.

Sherry made a face as well but was otherwise not bothered. Carl barely cast a glance in Madam Sager’s direction and did not really care to.

Lisa smiled warmly at the returning pair and said, “Carl, Sherry, everyone has given a toast to Grandma already, so you two should as well.”

She was subtly hinting that they could make up an excuse to leave after the toast. Carl took the hint and responded kindly, raising a glass. Sherry followed suit and grabbed a glass as well.

Anne suddenly remarked, “Carl, both of your brothers and sisters-in-law went up to

Grandma to toast to her just now, so you two should do that as well. She can’t see you from a distance.”

Carl reluctantly agreed and told Sherry, “Grandma has poor eyesight. Let’s go up to her.”

He figured that it was not much hassle, especially considering they could leave after they were done with the toast. He glanced at Sherry who nodded agreeably.

With that, they approached Madam Sager together.

Madam Sager wore a permanent scowl on her face and barely responded to them approaching.

Carl did not think much of it and began to give a toast, “Grandma, | wish you good health and prosperity.”

Without that, he raised his glass.

Sherry raised her glass as well and downed the contents of the glass in one swig.

Ron suddenly chuckled out loud and commented, “Hehe... this is some strong liquor that contains 53% alcohol. It’s pretty impressive that you can finish it in one gulp, but that’s expected of someone running a nightclub.”

Upon hearing this, everyone at the table turned to gawk at Sherry.

Anne chimed in, “Miss Sherry looks like she’s been doing this for a long time. How often do you drink?”

Sherry grimaced and was slightly irritated by the unnecessary comments.

After a stiff silence, she was prepared to retort but was quickly interrupted by Carl, “Yeah, you all know how much | like drinking, and Sherry here is one of my frequent drinking partners.”

Anne immediately did a double-take. Ron chuckled dryly.

Carl turned to Ron and said with a smile, “Uncle, your comment back there reminds me of something. If it wasn’t thanks to Sherry helping Sager Corporation manage all those nightclubs, you’d probably be homeless and begging for money on the streets instead of sitting here enjoying a toast with us.”

Ron and Anne turned pale white immediately. “Pfft...” Lisa could not stifle her laugh anymore and nearly spat out the food in her mouth. Ron and Anne turned speechless. Their faces were as black as ink.

Sherry was highly amused by this interaction. It took everything in her to pucker her lips. tightly to not break out into a hearty laugh.

Chapter 1658

Chapter 1658 An awkward silence engulfed the table.

Ron and Anne seemed to have become highly uncomfortable with what had been said, and the others did not seem much better either; take Madam Sager, for example.

She frowned so hard that her wrinkles surfaced on her face like crumpled paper. She scoffed sharply, pushed the tableware aside, and declared rather stoutly, “I’m full.”

Anne quickly went up to her. “Come on, I'll take you home.” That was when Ada suddenly approached with a glass of wine of her own.

She raised the glass in Madam Sager’s direction and exclaimed brightly with a delightful smile, “Grandma, let me toast to you as well. | wish you great joy, and may all of your heart’s desires be fulfilled. Live a long and healthy life!”

She brushed past Sherry as she gave the toast, and the glass suddenly tipped over in her hands and spilled its entire contents on Sherry’s left arm.

The sleeves of Sherry’s shirt were drenched in an instant. The fabric clung to her skin and jolted her with a cold spark. “Oh no, I’m sorry. It was an accident! Here, let me wipe it for you,” Ada said hastily.

Sherry wanted to do it herself, but before she could react, Ada was already all over her and tugged the sleeves of her shirt upward.

With a vigorous pull, her sleeves were yanked upward to reveal the hideous scar imprinted

on her arm.

Ada immediately shrieked.

Anne cried out in shock as well, “What the hell is that?!”

Madam Sager seemed utterly disgusted by what she saw.

Everyone around the table reacted with equal disgust. They were immediately repulsed by Sherry’s presence.

The collective shock sucked the air out of the room.

Sherry immediately pulled her arm away from Ada.

Ada paid no attention whatsoever to Sherry’s repulsion and asked, “Miss Sherry, what's with that horrid scar on your arm?”

Sherry turned pale in an instant. She knew that Ada had spilled the wine on her on purpose. She must have caught a glimpse of the scar on her arm back in the toilet and intentionally set her up to embarrass her in public.

Although Sherry cared little what the Sagers thought of her, she could not deny that the scar was a vile mark of the trauma she had suffered and that it evoked sour memories.

Everyone around her, even the people seated at adjacent tables were stealing looks at her, gawking at her scar, and murmuring among themselves. The unwanted attention made her feel extremely self-conscious.

She steeled herself and answered sharply, “It’s from an accident.”

Ada remarked with a hint of a smile, “You must have been too careless. Now, you have a giant ugly scar on your arm that will follow you around for the rest of your life.”

She suddenly turned to Carl and asked, “Carl, don’t you feel the same way?”

Carl glared at her, gone were his usual easy-going charms. He snapped sharply and without any sense of refrain, “Why are you acting all friendly with me? Do | even know you?”

Ada was horrified by this.

Astiff silence overtook the table.

Ron spoke up, “Carl, she is my niece, Ada Wright. You’ve met her before. Have you forgotten?”

Carl laughed and mocked her, “Ah, so she’s your niece. That explains why she’s so ugly.”

Ron was struck speechless.

Ada’s reaction was not any better either. All the color was drained from her face, and she looked like she was about to cry.

Carl continued to mock her relentlessly, “I can’t believe you have the guts to mock Sherry of all people with a face like that. Where did you get the confidence from? From your uncle?”

This broke Ada, and she burst out crying and quickly ran out of the banquet hall with her hands covering her face from shame. By this point, there was not so much as a whisper in the banquet hall. Everyone was silent.

Ron and Anne seemed distraught, and Madam Sager was seething with fury by this point.

Anne suddenly snickered, her voice echoing through the hall.

Lisa took control of the situation and turned to Carl. “Carl, Sherry doesn’t seem to be doing too well, why don’t you take her and leave? You two are finished eating anyway.”

Carl nodded and promptly took Sherry’s hand. They were out of the banquet hall in no time.

Anne suddenly piped up and turned to Lisa, “Lisa, they haven’t even finished toasting to Mom yet.”

Chapter 1659

Lisa chuckled. “You'd better check if mom is still in the mood for a toast.”

Anne turned pale.

“Don't you think it’s very disrespectful of them to leave without even bidding farewell to Mom?” Ron remarked grumpily.

Lisa answered with a feigned smile, “Why don’t you ask your darling niece if she spilled the wine on Sherry on purpose? Do you think we'd be in this situation if she hadn't done that?”

Ron stammered for a proper response, “Ada... Ada didn’t do it on purpose.” “lam sure she did it on purpose.” Lisa hissed sharply, “I’m not an idiot.” Ron gulped.

Lisa was not interested in squabbling with them any longer. She shot up from her seat and turned to Madam Sager, “Mom, I'll be leaving. | have some business to deal with.”

Madam Sager ignored her. Lisa had been used to her ambivalence and paid no mind to it. She turned and strutted off without hesitation.

After leaving the banquet hall, Carl produced a handkerchief from his pocket and tried to help Sherry wipe off the wine stains from her arm.

Sherry insisted on doing it herself. She hastily brushed it several times over her arm before handing the handkerchief back to Carl, not forgetting to thank him. “Thank you for helping me back there.”

It did feel good when she heard what Carl said to Ada back there.

“What are you thanking me for?” Carl frowned. “I’m the reason she tried to humiliate you in public.” “I'm fine.”

It was not a big deal. She could handle being mocked by a crowd.

This humiliation was nothing compared to the harrowing suffering she had to endure under John. Some snarky words and cross looks could barely hold a candle to the endless torment she had to go through.

She stuffed her hands in her pockets and continued walking.

Carl followed her every step of the way. After a long silence, he spoke again, “Sherry, | know a few very capable surgeons. Do you want me to bring you to them? I’m sure they

2 can do something about that scar of yours.” “No, | don’t need it.”

If she was going to have it treated, she would have done it a long time ago. Besides, the scar had fully developed into her skin by now, and there was no reversing it.

More importantly, the very existence of the scar was a sore reminder of what the despicable man had done to her, and she would rather keep it.

Carl sensed the resolute in her voice and decided to stop trying to convince her.

They walked to the parking lot.

Just as Sherry was about to get in the car, Lisa came running after them. She wanted to check on Sherry.

Sherry smiled warmly and assured her, “Aunt Lisa, I’m fine.”

Lisa looked at her, her eyes filled with distress. “Sherry, | remember you being fine before you went to Glanchester. What

happened to you when you were there? You've got so much thinner, then there’s this unexplainable scar. What kind of accident were you talking about. back there?”

Sherry became gloomy and tried to avoid the topic. “You know, things happen. Anyway, it doesn’t matter now. It’s all over.”

Lisa wanted to probe further, but Carl cut her off. “Mom, I’m going for a drink with Sherry. Why don't you give it a rest for now?” he said as he gently tugged Lisa away from Sherry.

Lisa shot a fierce look at him and sent them off reluctantly. “Don’t drink more than you. need to, and make sure you send her home before it's too late.”

“Understood, don’t worry.” With that, Carl took Sherry’s hand.

Sherry was quickly ushered into the car.

With that, they took off and exited through the front gates of the Sagers’ villa.

It was already nighttime. Spots of streetlights flanked both sides of the road illuminated the path before them. Sherry lowered the car window to feel the gentle sea breeze brushing against her skin.

Just as she was about to close her eyes to get some rest, she suddenly spotted a familiar figure in her peripheral vision. She frowned reactively and turned around.

All that could be seen was the spacious lane and several cars riding its winding paths.

Chapter 1660

Carl noticed Sherry acting strangely and asked, “Sherry, what are you looking at?” Sherry took a deep breath and brushed it off, “Nothing.”

She must have been mistaken.

That man was miles away in Glanchester. There was no way he would show up here.

Meanwhile, a car that was coming from the opposite lane that had just whizzed past Car!’s car, the windows were rolling up and swiftly shut with a steady thud.

Aman sat in the back seat and stared at the rearview mirror. It was John.

Inside the mirror, he could spot Car!’s car driving away. With every passing second, the car grew smaller until it turned into a blip in the mirror before vanishing.

Nobody spoke inside the car.

The driver and Jason sat in the front row.

Caprice was sleeping on his lap.

He continued staring intensely into the rearview mirror with an intense look, refusing to avert his gaze from it.

At one point, Jason asked cautiously, “Sir, should we chase after them?”

“No need. Take us back to the hotel.”

Just now, he had caught a look of horror on Sherry’s face. She must have been frightened by the prospect of meeting him here. He decided to wait several days before meeting her.

He brought up another matter. “Have you investigated what's been going on recently with the Sager household?” Jason answered promptly, “Our men are going through the findings now and will provide a report once they’re done.” “Alright, make sure to inform me at first notice.”

“Yes, sir.”

Sherry passed on drinking with Carl and had him send her back home instead.

She lived in an apartment a short distance away from the Sagers’ villa.

Upon returning to her apartment, she took a long shower to clear her mind. Then, she changed into her pajamas and threw herself on her bed.

It was a tranquil night, and she could hear the stark silence ringing in her ears.

She had trouble falling asleep. After tossing and turning in bed for a while, she reached for her phone and opened the photo gallery.

It was full of pictures of Caprice.

There were pictures of Caprice snoring like a piglet in her sleep, and there were shots of her smiling radiantly from when they went out playing. Most importantly, there were pictures taken of the two of them together, a pair of mother and daughter.

Sherry looked at each picture and carefully took them in. Eventually, she fell asleep while scrolling.

Inside a hotel directly opposite the apartment in which Sherry resided, inside a presidential suite on the top floor, the lights in the study were turned on.

John was sitting at the desk, going through the report he had just received from his men.

Everything there was to know about the Sagers was laid out in concise detail in the report. He had all the information concerning each member of the household as well as a brief of their relationship with one another.

After going through them, he went through the report on Sager Corporation.

It was discovered that Lisa was the one doing the heavy lifting, Keeping the corporation above the water. And yet, she tended to be scorned by the family.

Over the last two years, Sherry had contributed greatly to the company’s resurrection. There was an entire page dedicated to her countless contributions to the corporation. Everything she did make a huge difference and brought a huge positive impact on the corporation's finances.

John found himself grinning with pride as he read the statistics.

She was brilliant, as expected of his wife.

While he was engrossed in the report, there was a knock on the door.

“Come in.”

The door was pushed open and Jason walked in.

John turned to his visitor. “What do you need?”

Jason reported hesitantly, “Sir, we just receive new information from one of our men. Word

is that Mrs. Sherry and Master Sager are getting engaged next month.”
