Ch. 1856..1860

Chapter 1856

Caprice was weirded out but paid no mind to it.

Shortly after that, Moses showed up again.

“Caprice, can we talk in my office?” He gestured in the direction of his office.

Caprice nodded and followed him into the office.

As soon as the office door was shut, Kenneth and several other snoopers clambered outside the office. Inside the office, Moses sat Caprice down and poured a glass of water for her.

Caprice stated solemnly, “Moses, please just tell me what's on your mind. You don’t have to be worried about hurting my feelings.”

“That’s not what I’m doing. | just feel guilty because | let you down.” Moses took a deep breath, and a troubled look surfaced on his face. “Caprice, | heard from Jonathan that a man took you away last night. Could you tell me about your relationship with that man?”

He was talking about Liam.

Caprice replied, “He’s something like a brother to me.”

Moses fixed a look on her. “He’s not your real brother?”

Caprice shook her head. “No, he is the son of my mother’s best sister.”

“He...” Moses stammered as he spoke, “Is he a particularly influential man in Westchester?” Caprice eyed him suspiciously. “Moses, why are you asking me this?”

Moses exhaled tiredly before continuing, “President Michael, the one who was harassing you last night has been fired after a joint decision by the board members at Swift Tech Corporation. | don’t know the details, but it seems like all of the employees who were at Elysian House with him last night were laid off as well and even fled the city.”

The news came as a shock to Caprice.

Could it be a coincidence? After what they had done to her last night, all of them were suddenly fired and even fled the city overnight!

Could Liam be the one behind this? He must have punished them for what they did to her! Something gleamed in her eyes. “Caprice, were they... Was the Liam you mentioned the one behind this?” Moses asked curiously.

Swift Tech Corporation was one of the most reputable companies in Westchester, and President Michael held a significant position inside the company that put him among the top three in terms of authority. For someone of his stature to be fired overnight, someone very powerful must have been at work to orchestrate these events.

Caprice was afraid of drawing unwanted attention and answered hazily, “I know that Liam runs a business, but he’s always very busy. | don’t think he has time for something like this.”

It sounded very convincing the way she put it.

Moses looked at her again.

When he thought about it, Caprice probably would not have worked for him if she knew someone so powerful and influential in the city.

With this in mind, he breathed a sigh of relief before continuing, “Alright, that’s enough questions from me. Are there any questions you have for me? | promise to do my best to answer whatever questions you may have for me.”

Caprice had come in here expecting to be fired, but now that events had developed into what they were, it could hardly be said that she caused any trouble at all for the company. She looked intently at Moses. “Moses, I’m fine. You don’t have to offer me any kind of compensation for what happened.”

“Is there anything | can do for you?” he asked sincerely.

Caprice was very blunt about her intentions. “Moses, thank you for being so kind to me, but | don’t think | should continue working here.”

She should have never been here in the first place.

It was a start-up company, and all of its employees worked very hard and put everything they had on the line. What they needed was a driven and qualified member, not someone who was still in university with no experience to speak of.

Besides, she wanted to find a job that she was interested in and could offer her a chance to develop herself.

The administrative assistant position Moses assigned to her was a rather simple, even monotonous job, and she had hoped for something more.

She rose from her seat. Moses rose as well and approached her as he looked into her eyes. “Is this because of what happened last night?”

“No.” Caprice smiled apologetically. “Moses, you of all people should know that I’m not someone that your company needs or is looking for. I’m just wasting your resources.”

Moses grimaced as he felt his voice lodged inside his throat.

Caprice had nothing to add after this. She lapped around Moses and stepped outside.

As soon as she opened the door, she saw Kenneth and several other employees crowded nearby. They smiled politely at her. Caprice returned a polite smile, then she returned to her seat and began packing up

her

belongings.

Chapter 1857

Kenneth and the others were still stealing subtle glances at her.

“Kenneth, are you sure it wasn’t that mysterious guy who got President Michael fired?” one of them voiced his suspicion.

Kenneth answered ruminatively, “I don’t think so. She wouldn’t be working here for us in the first place if she knew somebody capable of pulling that off.”

“That’s true. | wonder what happened at Swift Tech Corporation.”

“| have to give it to her. She’s smarter than | thought. At least, she knows to resign without having to be asked to.” Kenneth remarked dryly, “What do you know? She does have some brains in her after all.”

Caprice quickly packed her belongings.

All of her belongings fit snugly in her backpack.

After she was done, she swiped a glance at Jonathan.

He looked like he was barely paying attention to Caprice as his eyes were transfixed on the computer display. His whole demeanor was very stuck-up as if he considered himself too good to acknowledge her at all.

Caprice was going to say goodbye to him but decided against it when she noticed this. She picked up her backpack and prepared to walk out.

“Caprice.” Moses suddenly stopped her.

She turned back to face him.

He walked up to her and offered kindly, “Let me see you off.” Caprice smiled politely. “Okay.”

They left the office and stepped into the elevator.

Moses addressed her formally, “Caprice, even though you are no longer working for me, we can still keep in touch going forward. If you need help with your studies or anything else, you know who to call.”

“| will. Thank you, Moses.”

Moses smiled faintly. “You’re welcome.”

Ding!

The elevator stopped on the first floor, and they stepped out

Just as they were about to walk out of the building, the phone in Moses’ pocket suddenly rang. He pulled the phone out of his pocket and immediately frowned when he read the caller ID. He looked

troubled and hesitant to answer the call.

His reaction did not escape Caprice. She promptly turned to him and excused herself, “Moses, thanks for sending me off. The school is just nearby, so | can cycle there myself. I’m sure you have more work to do.”

There was a spark in Moses’ eyes. He smiled and said to her, “Alright, let’s get dinner tonight. I'll treat you to something nice.” “Okay.” Caprice accepted the invitation without a second thought.

Moses strode back into the building and answered the call.

Caprice walked along the side of the road, clinging the backpack tightly to her body. It was only a short walk to the bicycle stop.

She was just about to cross the road to get to the bicycle stop at the opposite end of the road when she noticed a familiar car parked beside the road.

She read the license plate, and sure enough, it was Liam’s car. She cautiously approached the car and tried to spy inside to see if there was anybody inside.

No luck. The windows were tinted and she could barely get a glimpse of its interior. Just as she was about to gently tap against the window, it suddenly lowered by itself.

Liam's stout appearance was immediately revealed. His depthless dark eyes reflected the brightness of the sun. He spoke calmly, “Get in from the other side.”

Caprice was delighted to see him. She walked around to the other side of the car and promptly got in.

Chapter 1858

Chapter 1858 “Liam, what brings you here?” she asked with an endearing smile.

Liam leaned comfortably against the backseat with his arms crossed in front of him, his voice cool as usual. “Checking up on you for your parents.”

Caprice made a face.

Liam glanced at the bag she had slung over her shoulders. “What's your plan?”

“| don’t know.” She had only just quit her job and hadn’t figured out her next move.

He asked, “Are you still looking for a job?”

She admitted quite frankly, “I have no idea.”

Liam dropped the matter and turned to the driver. “Drive.”

The driver promptly stepped on the gas pedal. They arrived at Sparkrow University girls’ dormitory shortly after that. Caprice was going to leave when Liam suddenly remarked, “Come to me if you're looking for a job.”

“Alright, | got it,” she responded politely.

Then, she got out of the car and marched into the dorm.

Liam watched her from inside the car. The only thing on his mind was the imagery of the man walking Caprice out of the building just now. That man was probably the senior that Caprice talked about, the one who had invited her to work for him.

Caprice went back to her room and threw herself on the bed. She lay in bed until evening.

She received a message from Moses. He regretfully informed her that he had something urgent come up and had no choice but to postpone their dinner for the next time.

Caprice was very understanding, and she replied curtly, “It’s alright. Don’t worry about it.” Moses apologized again before heading back to work.

Then, her parents called. They were checking up on her and asked about how her first two days back in Westchester went.

Caprice did not tell them anything about what happened in Elysian House. She swerved the topic to some other inconsequential subject. She talked to them for a while before hanging up.

Shortly after that, Freya returned. She made sure to buy takeout for Caprice.

They put on variety shows to watch while eating. After the meal, she whiled away her time on the phone before falling asleep around midnight.

She spent the next few days lazing around in the dorm. One day, she slept until noon before waking up naturally. The first thing she did was to reach for her phone. She scrolled through her feed and immediately saw a new post by Heather.

It was captioned: “Carter Tech City is open to the public from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. today. If anyone of you would like to tour the city, make sure you bring a reservation slip.”

As usual, a picture of the city was attached to the post.

Caprice briefly glanced through the post before scrolling past it.

She found herself stalking Liam’s profile again.

Over the last few days, every post he made was very brief and contained only one sentence at most. He was either working or working overtime.

Each post was made along with pictures of the view from inside his office, as usual.

He would post during the day, with sunlight flooding the room, offering the room a warm and energetic ambiance. Otherwise, he would post at nighttime and show the city basked in glittering spotlights.

His office looked very nice, even homely. During his leisure time, he would watch movies or read a book while enjoying a snack. Ding!

She received a text from Heather.

“Caprice, how are things at work? Are you adapting well enough?”

She frowned when she read the text.

Quite frankly, she nearly forgot that the reason she came back to Westchester at all was that she had picked up a job. Ajob that lasted all of one day.

She took a deep breath and replied, “It’s fine. My manager and colleagues are very nice to me.”

Heather replied, “That’s good to know. By the way, do you have time today? Carter Tech City today is open to the public today, and Isabel Ross, the famous celebrity is going to be visiting as well. Our reservation is filled, but | can let you in as a special guest.”

Caprice groaned.

Chapter 1859 Why did she need Heather to enter the city? She could simply go directly to Liam!

Heather was doing the same old thing of boasting about her status in Carter Tech City and rubbing her relationship with Liam in her face.

Then again, it had been a while since she last saw Isabel.

She considered for a moment before deciding, “Thanks for your offer. It is my off day today, but I’m not in the city right now. | don’t think | can make it there in time.”

“Well, that’s a shame. Isabel is going to be one of our ambassadors, and I'd love to introduce you to her if you came.” Caprice frowned. Why did she need Heather's help to see Isabel?

Furthermore, it sounded like Heather did not know about Isabel being Liam’s sister. It would make sense if the general public did not know, but she, of all people, should know.

Did Liam never mention that to her? Freya emerged from the bathroom.

Caprice was surprised to see her still sticking around the house since she should be at work by this hour, “Freya, aren’t you supposed to be working today?”

“Today is Saturday, so it’s my off day.” Freya flung the water off of her hands while approaching Caprice. She smiled cheerfully and nudged Caprice. “Caprice, get up and get ready. Let’s spend the day at Tech City.”

Caprice was taken aback by the sudden invitation. “You mean Carter Tech City?”

“Are there any other tech cities in Westchester?” Freya nudged her again. “Come on, get up! | got us on the guest list. Do you know that you need a special permit to visit?”

Caprice grimaced. She supposed she had no choice but to go at this point.

Around three in the afternoon, they arrived at the infamous Carter Tech City that lay on the outer edges of Westchester. It was located in the middle of a mountainous range with natural rivers flowing through the heart of the city.

The sky was a shade of pastel blue, and the air was refreshing to breathe. Countless towers made of steel and concrete punctured holes into the clouds and seemed to pierce into the heavens.

The futuristic Carter Tech City was a strange contrast to its lush and natural surroundings. It was a strange blend that gave it an otherworldly presence.

Caprice had seen many pictures, but witnessing its grandeur in person was a completely different experience.

There was roughly another hour to go before the city would open its gates to the public, but there was already an enormous crowd gathered outside.

There were some amongst the crowd who, just like Caprice and Freya, managed to get themselves on the guest list. Many failed to reserve a spot but made the journey nonetheless, even if it was just to gawk at the marvelous city from the outside.

“My god, it's so majestic! | wonder who the owner of this place is.” People were amused and chattered amongst themselves. Freya loved listening in on the gossip and quickly inched closer, tugging Caprice along with her.

Someone else remarked, “Well, judging by the name Carter Tech City, | think it’s natural to assume that it has something to do with Carter Corporation.”

“Carter Corporation focuses on the industrial sector, don’t they? | don’t think they have ever dabbled in the science and technology sector.”

“That’s right. | have a friend who works at Carter Corporation. He told me that since the beginning stages of the construction of the Tech City, the headquarters have never provided any form of funding.”

“Are you suggesting that Carter Tech City was built by someone else who happened to go by the name Carter as well?” “Who knows? Either way, I’m sure this person is very resourceful.”

“That’s putting it lightly. It has to be someone unimaginably resourceful and brilliant to be able to bring the vision of a city like this to fruition.”

“It's probably someone pretty old. It must have taken a very long time to plan everything.”

“If | had to guess, it’s probably a middle-aged man, the stereotypical fat and balding businessman.”

“| would expect it to be an old man.”

Their wild speculations were way off and frankly quite ridiculous.

Caprice could not bear to stomach their nonsense anymore and exclaimed, “No, he’s a very handsome young man!” This drew their attention instantly.

“How do you know it’s a handsome young man? Have you ever seen him?” someone asked.

Caprice realized she made a mistake, and she stammered, “I... It was just a wild guess.”

“The little girl probably watches too many TV shows and confused reality with fiction.”

“Hahaha...... °

Everyone laughed at her expense.

Chapter 1860 Caprice quickly became flustered.

Awave of embarrassment washed over Freya as well. She took Caprice’s hand and quickly scuttled away from the crowd that was viciously scrutinizing them. They fled the scene hastily.

Caprice nearly tripped over while wading through the crowd. At one point, she accidentally bumped into someone. The man she bumped into groaned loudly and quickly grew upset. “What's wrong with you? Are you blind or something?”

Caprice turned to the man, ready to apologize. That was when she realized that it was Moses, Kenneth, Jonathan, and another employee at the company. They looked just as surprised to see her.

The person she bumped into was Kenneth. He quickly withdrew the angry intonation in his voice. and greeted her with a delightful smile, “What a coincidence to see you here of all places! It must be fate.”

Moses shot a look at him, then he stepped forward and asked Caprice in a caring voice, “Were you hurt?” “Moses, aren’t you going to check up on me as well? She bumped into me!” Kenneth groaned.

Moses ignored him, focusing only on Caprice.

Caprice smiled and assured him, “Don’t worry, I’m fine.”

Moses nodded before turning to Freya. “There’s still an hour to go before the city opens. Where are you two going in such a hurry? Did something happen?”

Caprice scowled instinctively when she recalled the unruly crowd back there and their ridiculous, baseless speculations. Freya made something up on the spot. “It’s too crowded over there, so we decided to wait somewhere else.”

“There’s a quiet corner over there. Let’s go for a walk there,” Moses gestured in a certain direction and suggested kindly. Caprice glanced at Kenneth and Jonathan.

Kenneth wore a playful smile on his face. There was always a little spirit of a troublemaker within him, so it was impossible to make out what was on his mind.

Jonathan was very aloof and was turned in another direction. It did not seem like he was very fond of them.

Caprice wanted to turn down the offer. Before she could get a word out though, Freya accepted the offer for her. She yanked at Caprice’s hand and went to join Moses and his group

Caprice grimaced and followed the group reluctantly. Soon, they found themselves at the edge of the woods where there were fewer people crowded around.

Moses and his group must have been waiting at this spot previously. When Caprice and Freya got there, they noticed a bunch of bags strewn over the field of grass.

Kenneth rummaged in his bag and found his camera. He then threw its straps around his neck.

He looked at the entrance of Carter Tech City with excitement beaming in his eyes.

Jonathan had a selfie stick ready as well.

Moses turned to Caprice. “Caprice, are you on the guest list?”

The moment he raised the question, Kenneth and Jonathan turned to him with a sudden jerk.

Kenneth stated crossly, “Moses, we only have four spots, and there are four of us already. Even if you want to bring Caprice into the city, we don’t have any extra spots for her.”

Jonathan shot a look at Caprice and echoed the same sentiment, “That's right. We're full.”

The other person who was with them stayed silent the entire time.

Moses frowned.

Before he could respond, Caprice clarified, “We're on the guest list as well. Freya managed to snag

a spot from a reseller.”
