Ch. 1871..1875
Chapter 1871
Meanwhile, behind another hedge of bushes.
Isabel had been hiding here for a while. She was wrapped tightly in bundles of fabric with a mask and a cap covering her face so she would not be recognized by the public. She stared intently at Moses and Caprice.
Her assistant was hiding with her. She was puzzled by Isabel's sneaky and suspicious behavior. "Miss, what are you looking for?"
Isabel narrowed the look in her eyes pensively. Then she turned around and went toward Liam's office tower.
Inside Liam's office.
This part of the city was closed off to the general public, away from the noise of the gathered tourists.
His tall and upright figure stood next to the French windows with binoculars in his hand. He was spying on the gathered tourists in the streets.
Everyone was gathered at Isa Tower. From this distance, all he could see was the top of their heads. There was no way to pinpoint where the silly girl was.
After a while, he set aside the binoculars and slumped back on the leather chair behind the desk.
He could hear muffled cries outside his office.
He heard Mitch speaking in a severe voice, "Miss Manson, you have been fired. Mr. Carter doesn't want to see you, please leave immediately!"
Heather cried out, "I need to hear it from him! I'm not leaving!"
Mitch was having trouble diffusing the situation. "Miss Manson, please don't make things difficult-
She shoved Mitch out of the way before he could finish his sentence.
Immediately afterward, the office door was flung open, and in came Heather, her eyes puffy and red.
She stomped toward Liam's clesk, her eyes were filled with anguish.
Mitch marched into the room as well and cast a frantic look at Liam.
Liam calmly waved him away.
Mitch promptly stepped out of the room.
Liam leaned comfortably against the leather chair. He picked up a cup of tea on the table and took a casual sip from it.
The leather chair creaked as he swayed back and forth nonchalantly. The entire time, he was staring at the view outside the window instead of acknowledging Heather.
Heather did not take her eyes off him the entire time. "President Carter, why? Has my work been unsatisfactory lately?"
"You know why."
Something gleamed in her eyes, and she whimpered. "I don't! I have completed every task you assigned to me. I don't know what exactly I've done wrong.*
Liam scowled, and a hint of anger surfaced underneath the shadow of his eyes. "If you don't know, then leave." He was not in the mood of entertaining her nonsense.
Panic seized her eyes as tears began to fall. "President Carter, I have been nothing but loyal to you. I take my work very seriously and have never made any mistakes since I began working here. Are you going to fire me just because I teased Caprice a little?"
Liam stated curtly, "You'll have plenty of job offers on the job market. I'll put in a good word for you as well. Consider this a token of appreciation for your contribution to the company."
His eyes never left the windows the entire time as he spoke without emotion.
Heather walked around his desk and went up to him.
*President Carter, I made a mistake. Would you please give me another chance? I just wanted to tease Caprice a little. I didn't expect her to get shoved to the ground."
Liam turned to her, his eyes dark with disdain.
Heather immediately zipped her lips. Her eyes were filled with pain and remorse, it was a look that would inspire pity in anyone with a shred of emotion.
"Get out," Liam spat out the words.
He spoke without any warmth.
Heather was visibly affected by the tone of his voice. She asked bitterly, "I've stuck by your side for so many years. Do I mean nothing to you when compared to Caprice?"
Liam sipped from his cup of tea again to distract himself from his seething anger. "Don't test my patience."
Heather felt a sharp throb in her heart. Liam's indifference was too much for her. She lost control of herself and cried out, "Caprice is a worthless piece of garbage! She doesn't deserve you!"
Chapter 1872
Liam's expression tightened with rage. "Scram!"
His deep and bellowing roar shook the office.
Heather shivered with fear.
She always saw Liam as a rather un-emotive person. This was the first time she had ever seen him angry.
It was terrifying!
She was finally wary of overstaying her welcome. She stumbled a few steps backward before breaking out into a full trot out of the office.
She threw the door open and quickly paced outside.
The second she stepped out of the office, she saw a young and beautiful lady standing by the door, leaning against the wall.
She wore her hair in a curly style. Her taste in fashion was exquisite, sporting a crop top with a shawl thrown over her shoulders, finishing off the look with a pair of tailored jeans.
She was the pinnacle of feminine beauty.
The light pinkish makeup coating her cheeks added to her charms.
She looked like she had just stepped off the runway.
Heather was startled to see her here. "Isabel? Why are you here?"
Isabel leaned against the wall and regarded her icily.
She crossed her arms across her chest and looked at Heather strikingly. "Did you tamper with the ticketing machine just now when Caprice was in line?"
Heather felt a wave of chill run through her.
She was in a foul mood after getting kicked out of Liam's office.
She immediately cocked her chin audacious upward and looked at Isabel scornfully. "That's between me and President Carter, what does that have to do with you?"
Isabel cocked an eyebrow and spoke with equal aggression, "You messed with Caprice so it has everything to do with me."
Her gaze was sharp like a dagger, her aura was no weaker than Heather's.
Heather was seething at this point.
Liam was the master of Carter Tech City, the young master of the prestigious Carters of Westchester. He had every right to fire her and even impose his will on her, but how dare a common movie star like Isabel to have the guts to speak to her in such a tone?
She shot a hateful glare at Isabel. "Caprice is a worthless piece of garbage. I can do whatever I want to her. Who are you to tell me what I can or cannot do? What gives you the right?!"
Isabel scowled. She marched forward until she was right in front of Heather, then she raised her right palm. Smack!
She struck a vicious blow across Heather's cheeks.
Heather was too stunned to react. It took her several seconds to process what had just happened. She held the side of her face and cried out, "You hit me!"
Isabel smiled provokingly. "Watch me do it again."
As soon as she said that, she delivered on her promise and slapped the other side of Heather's cheeks with equal strength.
Heather was speechless.
Her cheeks turned beet red from a combination of having been slapped and from her armageddon anger.
"You b*tch! I'll kill you!" She shrieked and threw herself at Isabel.
Before her fingers could even graze Isabel, Mitch and the security guards rushed to the scene.
Mitch stood in front of Isabel to guard her.
Two security guards pinned Heather to the wall.
Heather tried desperately to break free to no avail. All she could do was cast vehement threats at Isabel. "Just you wait! I'll show you who's boss!"
Isabel calmly crossed her arms across her chest and smiled sarcastically. "Sure, I can't wait."
With that, she turned to the two security guards. "Get her out of here."
They carried her like a sandbag.
Heather was humiliated. She struggled ineffectively. "Isabel, you're just a cheap third-rate actor! How dare you do this to me?! I'll never forgive you!"
The security guards carried her into the elevator and eventually, her cries faded out.
Mitch turned to Isabel and checked on her. "Miss, are you alright?"
Mitch was a close confidante of Liam. He was one of the very few people who knew that Isabel was his sister. Isabel put his worries at ease. "It's okay, she didn't even touch me."
Chapter 1873
Only then did Mitch leave.
Isabel strode into Liam’s office.
The moment she stepped inside, she saw Liam’s intimidating figure perched on the leather chair behind the desk. He held a cup of tea in his hand as he stared at the view outside.
There was a deep frown on his eyebrows. She wondered what was on his mind.
She went up to him and proceeded to sit right on top of his desk without any fear. With her arms across her chest, she asked unabashedly, “Do you think Heather has a thing for you?”
Liam spoke dismissively, “I wouldn’t know.” Isabel jerked her lips to the side. That was a very characteristic reply of his.
For his entire life, he only cared about the people closest to him. As far as he was concerned, anybody else outside of this circle was completely invisible.
Since Heather was out of the picture now, Isabel hoped she would not show up again to cause trouble in the future.
She suddenly remembered her reason for coming here. “I saw Caprice just now. There was this guy who spoke to her for a while under a tree.”
This caught Liam’s attention at last. “What did they talk about?”
“This guy was there during the entire fiasco with the ticketing machine. He apologized to her for not being able to help her, then he asked her if they could continue to be friends in the future.”
“That’s all?”
“Yeah, | can tell he has feelings for Caprice.”
Liam frowned disapprovingly.
Isabel noticed his reaction and asked pointedly, “What’s on your mind anyways? Why haven't you done anything about Caprice?”
Liam fell into a pensive silence. He set the teacup on the table and reached for a stack of documents. “I have work to deal with, could you give me some space?”
He was trying to avoid the topic, and it was not subtle at all.
Isabel took a deep breath and removed herself from the surface of his desk. She made sure to reiterate her point. “You better make your move soon, or else she’s going to get snatched up by another guy. Don’t say | never warned you.”
With that, she walked out.
Liam immediately threw the stack of documents back on the table.
He frowned sharply as a wave of emotions gnawed at him.
Meanwhile, Caprice and Freya finally managed to squeeze their way out of the crowd gathered at Isa Tower.
The film crew members had just shown up and announced to the crowd’s disappointment that Isabel had already left. The crowd dispersed shortly after that.
Caprice and Freya walked around the city.
The sky above was black as ink, sprinkled with countless stars like glitter powder. Soon, the dazzling spotlights of the futuristic city were turned on and illuminated the sky above.
On top of the spectacular sights and landmarks, many exhibitions in Carter Tech City offered visitors a chance to tinker with all sorts of next-generation technology. This included virtual reality, remote-controlled robots, augmented reality, and more.
Due to the sheer volume of people pouring into these exhibitions, each person was only given five minutes to try out these latest inventions.
Caprice and Freya gave everything a go before going to a robot-operated restaurant for dinner.
With that, the touring hours were nearing its end.
The restaurants and exhibitions were closing.
Tourists gradually made their way toward the exit, concluding their unforgettable visit to Carter Tech City.
Caprice wanted to say goodbye to Isabel and Liam. She took Freya with her and headed to Liam’s office tower.
They bumped into Isabel at a nearby intersection.
She seemed to be on the lookout for something or someone. She was wearing the same cap and mask seen previously. Despite her disguise, Caprice instantly recognized her. “Isabel!”
Isabel took off her cap and mask and greeted her warmly, “Caprice, just in time, | was looking for you.”
Caprice and Freya went up to her.
“Why? Did you need anything from me?”
Chapter 1874
Isabel fixed a look at Caprice and Freya before stating solemnly, “The tickets you bought are legitimate, there was nothing wrong with the machine as well.”
Freya was puzzled by this. “If there’s nothing wrong with the tickets and the machine, why couldn’t we enter?” Caprice frowned sharply. “Are you suggesting that someone was intentionally targeting us?”
Isabel nodded gravely.
Caprice did not need any further hints to gauge who this person was. “Was it Heather?”
Isabel was surprised. “How did you figure that out?”
“| just had a feeling.”
Heather was the only person who considered Caprice an enemy. Furthermore, there were only a handful of people who could tamper with the ticket machine.
Isabel rubbed her temples.
She was going to warn Caprice to be careful of Heather, but it turned out that her warning was not necessary. Caprice was already fully aware of Heather's hostility against her.
She announced excitedly, “I have good news, my brother just fired her. | even gave her two good slaps on the face for you!” Caprice was shocked to hear this. “Liam fired her?”
Freya was caught off-guard by this as well.
Isabel wondered why the news came off as such a shocker to Caprice. “Yeah, why?”
Caprice muttered, “I thought they were...”
“What about them?” Isabel asked.
Caprice figured that since even Sylvia did not know that Heather and Liam were dating, there was no chance that Liam would have told Isabel.
She was careful to not expose Liam’s secret and quickly made something else up on the spot. “I thought she was Liam’s capable assistant?”
“Ahh...” Isabel mused. “She’s a good assistant, I'll give that to her. Still, it was only by sheer luck that she managed to secure her position in Carter Tech City. Don’t worry about it, there’s plenty of very capable candidates willing to fill in for her spot.”
Caprice nodded absentmindedly.
Isabel gently caressed her hair. “Hey, | have to start preparing for a scene | need to shoot tomorrow. Talk to you next time!” “Okay. Goodbye, Isabel.”
“See you.”
Isabel walked away.
Freya expressed disdainfully, “Heather and her dirty tricks! | can’t stand her.”
If Liam had not shown up in time, Caprice would have been trampled flat.
Caprice smiled faintly. “It’s alright, at least nothing terrible happened to me.”
Freya took a deep breath and suddenly remarked, “I have to say, | wasn’t expecting Liam to fire
her.”
Neither did Caprice.
Heather was his girlfriend, how did he find the heart to fire his girlfriend?
“Caprice, do you think Liam has just been keeping her around for his amusement this entire time?”
“No, | don’t think so. He’s not that kind of person.” Caprice was convinced that Liam would not toy with other people’s feelings. Freya could not make sense of it. “What's his thought process? Is it simply because Heather crossed a line in abusing her power?”
Caprice considered for a moment.
That just might be it.
Liam had started Carter Tech City from the ground up. Surely he would not stand for Heather abusing her power and tampering with the ticket machine. Maybe it was an issue of professional
integrity.
While she was still musing about this, a robot marched up to them and spoke in a mechanical voice, “Dear visitors, Carter Tech City will be closing in ten minutes. Please head to the exit, thank you.”
Freya tugged at Caprice. “The gate is closing. Come on, let's get out of here.”
Caprice let Freya lead the way.
She reached for a phone while heading toward the exit and sent a text to Liam. “Hey Liam, I'll be leaving with Frey, see you.” It was a shame she could not say goodbye in person. She supposed a text would suffice.
She tucked the phone back in her pocket after that and did not take a second look at it. She and Freya were among the last group of people to leave Carter Tech City.
As soon as they stepped past the gates, they saw Moses waving at them. “Hey girls, I’ll send you two home.” He walked up to them and offered kindly.
Caprice asked out of curiosity, “Where are Kenneth and Jonathan? Weren't you supposed to go with them?”
Chapter 1875 “They drove here themselves, they left already.”
Caprice darted a glance at Freya. Since it did not seem like Freya opposed hitching a ride, she turned to Moses. “In that case, sorry to have to trouble you again.”
There was no accessible public transport in the vicinity. Many of the visitors were crowded around the entrance and were either waiting for their taxis or heading toward their cars.
Since Moses was going in the direction of the dormitory as well, it made sense to hitch a ride from him.
“No trouble at all.” He smiled warmly and led them to the parking lot.
He got into the driver's seat.
Caprice and Freya sat in the back.
The car picked up speed and swerved out of the parking lot.
Meanwhile, inside a car in the corner of the parking lot that had been parked there for a while. Liam was seated by himself in the back.
He looked at the car that had just swerved out of the parking lot, then he commanded the driver, Go. Tail that car over there.” “Yes, sir.” The driver immediately began the pursuit.
Moses chatted with the girls while driving.
Midway through their conversation, Caprice suddenly remembered to check if Liam had replied to her message when she told him she was leaving Carter Tech City.
She reached for her phone.
It was only then that she realized that Liam had texted her roughly five minutes ago. The text read, “I’m in the parking lot next to the exit. Look for my car, you know which one it is. I’ll send you home.”
Caprice was horrified. He was in the parking lot just now!
She quickly texted him, “I'm sorry, | just noticed your message. I’m already on my way home with Frey. Don’t have to wait up for me, make sure you get some rest.”
Liam replied swiftly, “It’s not easy to find a taxi in the area, how are you two going home?” Caprice was very honest as she replied, “We hitched a ride with one of our seniors in university. He happened to be visiting the city today as well and is sending us home since he’s going back to the
same area as us.”
Liam asked, “He’s your friend at university?”
Caprice replied, “Yeah, but he’s a fresh graduate.”
“I see.”
Caprice suddenly thought about him firing Heather.
She wondered if he had something to say about that. Perhaps he posted something in his feed? She immediately tapped into his social profile.
The most recent post was the one he posted yesterday, the one she had already liked and commented on.
He had not made a single post today.
Unless he made a private post only visible to a specific group of people.
She felt a bout of frustration.
She considered for a moment before deciding to text him, “Isabel told me that you just fired Heather, is that true?”
“Yeah.”
“Why did you fire her?”
She stared at the phone and waited nervously for an answer.
Liam replied, “Did Isabel tell you about what Heather did?”
She did a double-take before replying, “Yeah, she did.”
There was no response from Liam after that.
Caprice waited for a long time, it looked like Liam had dropped the conversation entirely. What could this mean?
He might be a man of few words, but it was not like him to just leave a conversation unfinished
Furthermore, the way he asked if she knew about what Heather did made an impression on her. What if... What if he fired Heather for her?!
