Ch. 1906..1910
Chapter 1906
Liam's hand froze in the air with the glass of wine.
Amomentary silence later, he grinned gently and pleasantly.
The girl liked the present he gave her, so it must mean she liked him.
So why did she reject the engagement?
The thought disheartened him once more.
After Caprice put on the sunflower ear studs, she took the pocket mirror out from her purse for a look. It was beautiful.
She looked into the mirror, smirking smugly before she cautiously looked around.
No one paid attention to her, so Heather would not know that she secretly swapped her own studs for the sunflower ear studs that Liam bought her.
Even though she did not want to admit it openly, she really liked the sunflower design. Even more so when Liam bought it for her.
Caprice continued to smirk as she covered her ears with her hair before she put her own studs into the bag and went back to the hall.
For some reason, after the little encounter with Liam, Trey lost his mood and wanted to leave. Caprice did not hold him back. It started to get boring alone, so she wanted to go home.
Unbeknownst to her, Heather was standing stiff as a monolith on the stairs opposite where she had sat earlier. She saw Caprice swap her own studs with the sunflower ear studs that Liam bought for her.
The grievance in her grew stronger and her eyes narrowed fiercely.
Seeing Caprice hopping out of the event hall happily, Heather could not help but clenched her fists tightly.
She lost to Caprice, an idiot good-for-nothing girl!
She won Caprice in every aspect except for her looks but the man had his eyes on that idiot!
The jealousy snowballed and almost burst out of her chest.
“B*tch!” Heather muttered grudgingly and strode down the stairs.
Half of the event hall was in the open air.
Although summer was unforgivingly hot, the night at Westchester was breezy.
Caprice hastened her steps when she exited the hall.
Outside the event hall had two beautiful fountains with one bridge in between, linking the entrance to the exit. She strode up to the bridge but then she heard a series of hurried footsteps behind her, chasing after her.
It sounded strange.
She stopped and turned around but then she saw a pair of hands pushing her over.
Caprice widened her eyes in shock and it was at that moment, she caught a glimpse of ferocity and jealousy on Heather’s face.
Right before she fell off the bridge, Caprice reached out to grab Heather’s hand and dragged her into the water as well. Splash!
Splash!
Two loud splashes were heard and it slightly silenced the event hall.
Amoment later, someone screamed, “Someone fell into the water!”
The curious crowd immediately gathered at the entrance.
Aswift figure shuttled across the crowd like the gale and tried to make his way to the fountains.
The cold water swiftly drenched Caprice wet and the fountain was at least two meters deep.
Fortunately, Caprice knew how to swim. She splattered around for a few seconds before she popped her head out of the water. At the same time, she also saw Heather popping her head out of the water further away.
The two of them locked eyes once more. Heather glared at Caprice coldly and said grudgingly, “Caprice Stockton!”
Caprice ignored her.
Chapter 1907
It was Heather who pushed her. Although she disliked trouble or causing a scene, she could not just step away when someone tried to hurt her.
Acrowd gathered outside the fountains, trying to have a look at what happened. Caprice turned away and wanted to get out to a less crowded place, but she spotted Liam there. He stood in front of the crowd, gazing at her.
The spotlight blinded her. She could only recognize him but was unable to see the expression on his face. She also did not know if he was looking at her or Heather.
She was wretched. She would rather not be seen by him.
She put her hands down and stopped trying to swim out of the fountain. She wanted to sink into the water to avoid embarrassment while trying to sneak away in another direction.
However, before her head could sink below the water, she heard Liam bellowing at her, "Caprice, swim up now!” "Mhmhh?"
Was he calling her name?
Caprice pouted and filled her mouth with air to remain floating.
Heather, on the other hand, had swam to the side.
Her hair and clothes were stuck on her skin as she looked at Liam with an innocent look from the water. "It's not me. It's Caprice who dragged me down the water. | don't know why she did that..."
"Oh my gosh. What’s wrong with her? Such poor manners."
"| believe she’s jealous of Ms. Manson. How stupid of her to do it in public."
"Ms. Manson looked terrible. Master Carter, pull her up."
The crowd started to take her side after Heather's explanation.
Caprice was slightly stunned before she looked at the man.
His tall figure squatted, seemingly trying to pull Heather out of the water.
Her chest tightened. Maybe because of the water's temperature, Caprice felt cold.
Disheartened, she released the air in her mouth and started to sink again.
Just when she wanted to swim away, she felt a strong arm holding her by the waist, preventing her from swimming away and wanting to pull her up.
Swoosh. She popped her head out of the water again for a breath of air and opened her eyes. She saw a handsome face before her, wet, but that did not stop him from looking at her lovingly.
Caprice widened her eyes. "Liam? Why did you come down for me?"
She thought he was going to pull Heather up.
Water trickled from his pronounced jawline. He frowned and looked at her coldly. "If | don't come down, how long do you plan to stay in the water?"
Caprice did not want to stay in the water, she just wanted to swim to the other, but Liam's gaze was fierce and it robbed the words out of her mind.
Liam then dragged her to the side.
The crowd watched as Liam brought Caprice out of the water. None of them dared to say a word. Liam carried Caprice by the waist and butt. It made her blush when they got out of the water. Liam noticed the blush-stained face. His eyes narrowed and asked, "Are you feeling okay?" Caprice shook her head, shaking water droplets at his face.
Liam was rendered speechless.
"I'm sorry, I..." Caprice nervously tried to wipe the water off his face.
After she wiped the water off his face and wanted to take her hand back, he held her by the wrist.
Chapter 1908
Chapter 1908 Caprice was slightly stunned. Liam got up and dragged her up in the process.
He then carried Caprice across the bridge and exited the event hall; they walked past Heather who had just gotten out of the water.
Heather was drenched, sitting on the ground in a wretched state.
Caprice could see her ferocious gaze but the man ignored her existence completely.
He did not even spare a glance at her and did not even pause when he walked past her. Caprice was dumbfounded.
Heather was his girlfriend. However, not only did he not save Heather from the water, but he carried Caprice away in front of her and did not even spare a glance at her as if she was some stranger.
Dong!
Something hit Caprice’s head and brought her back to her senses.
As she regained her senses, she realized Liam had brought her into his car.
He was beside her, looking at her with his deep and abyssal gaze.
Caprice was slightly surprised. She instinctively wanted to move away but his hand wrapped around her waist before she could. His brows furrowed. "Where are you going?"
"N-Nowhere.”
"Sit tight."
"Mhmm..."
Liam released her waist after she settled down. He grabbed his dry jacket and put it over her shoulder. He looked rather angry, so she did as she was told and did not cause a scene.
After putting the jacket over her, he pulled his hands back.
It became quiet inside the car.
Awhile later, Caprice looked at him.
He leaned against the seat and stared ahead with a blank gaze as the car sprinted along the freeway. It seemed like he was driving to his place in the city center.
Caprice turned to the back.
There were other cars on the road and they were going in the opposite direction of Elysian Hotel.
The man was not nervous at all.
Was he going to simply drive away without even talking to Heather?
Caprice looked at him once more.
He was still leaning against the seat and his eyes were still on the road.
His hair and shirt were wet and it made him look even more charming.
He probably sensed her gaze on him, so he turned to her and looked her in the eye.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked.
Caprice bit her lips awkwardly. A few seconds of hesitation later, she asked, "Liam, Heather fell into the water as well." "| know,” he answered with his usual frosty tone.
He made it sound like Heather was a stranger.
Caprice could not help but ask, "Shouldn't you check on her?"
She wondered why he would carry her away in front of Heather.
Liam frowned and his expression turned grim. "You want me to check on her?"
Caprice shook her head instinctively, but then she realized Heather was still his girlfriend, so she quickly explained, "No, it's not what | mean. | just don't understand why you saved me and not her."
Liam's brows furrowed tightly. He asked in his deep voice, "Why should | save her?"
Chapter 1909
Liam was obviously annoyed and displeased.
Caprice pouted. She decided to be frank and asked, "Isn't she your girlfriend?"
Liam's expression shifted. His furrowed brows ease but his expression looked slightly grimmer. Startled, Caprice awkwardly wiggled closer to the door.
At the next moment, his big hand held her tiny wrist.
Caprice was pulled back, closer to him than just now. Her body almost pressed against his. She then heard his deep voice saying, "Who told you she's my girlfriend?”
Caprice looked surprised. She looked up at him and asked, "She isn't your girlfriend?"
He looked into her eyes and said with gritted teeth, "Of course, she's not.”
Caprice widened her eyes. "But... But they say she's your girlfriend."
‘Who are 'they'?”
Caprice blinked.
She realized even though quite a number of people told her that Heather was his most trusted assistant and the most capable, no one had ever told her that Heather was his girlfriend.
However, whenever Heather was present, Liam would keep his distance from her and whenever she went looking for Liam, Heather would be there.
Why?
Heather kept exerting her dominance over Liam by calling him in an intimate tone.
If she was not his girlfriend, what was she to him?
"Caprice, answer my question,” Liam said in a deeper voice.
Caprice looked at his gloomy expression. She reluctantly asked, "She's really not your girlfriend?" "No."
‘Then who is she to you?”
“Subordinate. I'm her superior."
"If it's superior and subordinate, then why the intimacy? Why is she with you everytime | see you?" Liam went silent, not because of guilt but because of shock.
He did not expect her to ask him such a question.
He answered, "Everytime you see me, I'm working. Heather is responsible for liaising with clients. Of course, she has to be with
me. In other words, Heather was merely a liaison that worked for him.
Caprice was surprised by the answer. She asked, "If there's nothing between you two, then why did she call you so intimately in front of me?”
Liam's expression remained grim. "How did she call me in front of you?"
"She called you Liam like she's calling her boyfriend.”
As though she was afraid that Liam did not believe her, she pulled her phone out and showed him the chat history with Heather.
Heather's tone really sounded like she was referring to Liam as her boyfriend, and she kept exerting her dominance over Liam, making Caprice feel like she was some mistress trying to ruin a couple’s relationship.
Liam took her phone over to have a look. He scrolled through the chat window and went down to the last text she received. The latest text was about Heather being fired because she set Caprice up at the entrance of the Carter Tech District.
She first texted Caprice an apology and something like this, "Yeah. My prank at the security room made Liam mad but even if he doesn't let me go, it's time for me to leave. My parents want me back to take over the family business and Liam feels that I'm working too much, so it's a good opportunity for me to take a break."
Since when did he think Heather was working too much? When did he tell her to take a break?
Even if he could not understand how women talk, he could tell that Heather was eager to shape herself as someone important to him.
She wanted Caprice to believe that she was close, or even intimate, with Liam to the point that they were dating.
His brows furrowed and asked, "Is this how she talks to you behind my back?" "Yeah." Caprice nodded.
Chapter 1910
Liam curled his lips with a hint of frostiness flashing in his eyes.
Awhile later, he looked Caprice in the eye. Her fair and wet face made her look like a damsel in distress.
"So you think Heather and | are dating?"
Caprice hummed a reply.
"Is that why you reject our engagement?" he asked.
"Mhmm..." Caprice pondered but shook her head. "Not exactly.”
"What's the other reason?"
"It's because you...you don't..." Caprice lowered her blush-stained face.
She was too embarrassed to utter those words in person.
Liam narrowed his eyes. His usual calm look was replaced by restlessness and anxiety at the moment.
"| don't what?"
Screech!
It was then the car stopped.
Liam looked at the driver grudgingly.
The driver said in a small voice, "Sir, we're here.”
Liam pursed his lips. Before the bodyguard in the passenger seat opened the door for him, he got out of the car himself. Caprice also nervously opened the door, but before her feet could touch the ground, Liam had come to her side. He bent over, reached out to her waist with both arms, and carried her down the car before heading toward the elevator. Caprice was like a startled kitten in his arms. Her eyes were fixated on his face and she dared not move a muscle. The elevator soon reached his floor.
The door opened and he strode out.
His unit was diagonally across the elevator.
After he opened the door, he carried her to the bathroom in his room and finally put her down.
‘Take a shower. I'll wait for you outside.”
Caprice hummed a reply.
He walked out of the bathroom and also closed the door on his way out.
Caprice was finally left alone but her heart pounded wildly.
She could not refrain from thinking that Liam and Heather were not dating.
The shower was turned on and the temperature in the bathroom swiftly rose.
Caprice took a shower and recalled her conversation with Liam along the way, plus how she met Heather and the things that happened in the past two years.
Liam was busy with work in the past two years, so busy that Caprice had not seen him more than ten times.
Every time she met him, he was working outside the office. Even when she ran into him at the club on her 19th birthday, he was there because he had to meet a client.
He only kept Heather by his side because of work, and they never had any intimate contact either.
Even though Heather made it sound like they were close, she always behaved like a responsible subordinate when she was in his presence.
If Heather was truly his girlfriend, he would not simply fire her and would not buy the sunflower ear studs for Caprice in front of her.
Neither would he ignore her when she fell into the water with Caprice and neglect her existence completely. Caprice sighed a breath of relief after learning the truth.
Now that she had soothed her mood, her body felt hot because of the shower.
She turned off the shower and wiped herself clean.
Just when she wanted to go out, she realized she did not have any clothes on.
She wrapped herself with a towel and opened the door into a creak.
Just when she wanted to ask if he had any clean clothes that she could wear, she saw a chair in front of the door with a set of clean pajamas for men.
Her eyes blinked before she reached out to take them in.
After she put on the pajamas, she walked out of the bathroom.
