Ch. 1941..1945
Chapter 1941
Chapter 1941 Moses turned around and followed Kenneth and the others out. They stopped by the cashier before leaving to pay the bill, then they walked outside.
Caprice withdrew her gaze from them and noticed her friends staring at her intently. She asked suspiciously, "What are you girls looking at?"
“Nothing.”
The three of them shook their heads in unison.
Freya suddenly expressed poignantly, "Moses is a good man. What a shame.”
Lana nodded in agreement.
Caprice thought nothing of it. She knew that Moses was interested in her, but she already belonged to someone else.
Moses was a good man, and she was sure there he would manage to find the perfect partner for him in the future. There was no need to feel sorry for him.
After the meal, Caprice and her friends went to the cashier to settle the bill.
Just as Caprice reached for her phone and prepared to pay the bill, the cashier suddenly asked, "You girls are seated at table six near the entrance, correct?"
Freya nodded, "Yeah, why do you ask?" The cashier remarked with a bright smile, "A man who went by the name of Moses already settled the bill for you." Since the bill was already settled, there was no need for the girls to pay anymore.
Caprice put her phone away. Freya, Piper, and Lana exchanged confused looks, then they looked at Caprice before putting their phones away too.
With that, they walked out of the restaurant together.
On the way back to the dormitory, Caprice sent a text to Moses while her friends were busy chattering away. "Hey, Moses, thank you for paying for our table."
Moses replied almost instantaneously, "You're welcome."
Meanwhile, outside the restaurant where they had just finished eating, a private investigator with a large cap thrown over her head was hiding beneath the shadows and sending a text to Heather.
Heather had hired her and tasked her to spy on Caprice. She had been posted in the vicinity of Sparkrow University since this morning and waited until the evening when Caprice showed up at last to meet her friends.
She followed them to the restaurant as well. Although she failed to eavesdrop on their conversation when they talked about Caprice's family, she still managed to extract some valuable information.
She told Heather about Moses paying for Caprice and her friend’s bill and began speculating, "Miss Manson, | believe that man is into Caprice."
At the Manson’, the moment Heather saw the latest update, she replied, " Did you manage to sneak in some pictures?" The investigator promptly sent her a batch of pictures. She managed to take clear pictures of Moses as well as of Caprice and her friends eating at the restaurant.
There was a noticeable distance between Caprice and Moses. One of them was in a seated position while the other was standing. They looked like nothing more than mere acquaintances, and nobody would suspect there being any further relations between the two.
However, Moses looked at her in an especially affectionate way.
The sharp-eyed Heather immediately noticed this. She ordered the investigator, "Find out more about this man." After retiring to the dormitory, Caprice threw herself onto the bed after she showered.
As usual, she reached for her phone and the first thing she did was stalk Liam’s profile.
He had posted a picture taken from the usual angle from inside his office facing the windows, showcasing the view outside. It was captioned: "A quiet night."
When had it ever been noisy anyway? There was not a single marked residential area within a ten-mile radius of Carter Tech City. Unless there was an ongoing storm, it was tranquil most of the time.
Caprice did not think too much of it. She liked the post and went to text Liam, "Hey, Liam, did you get enough rest?"
Chapter 1942
Liam must be busy. Some time passed before he replied, "Yeah. Have you gotten back to the dorm with your friends?" Caprice replied, "We just got back from the restaurant a while ago. I'm already resting in bed."
To prove that she was telling the truth, she took a flattering picture of herself and sent it to Liam.
Liam replied, "Good, make sure you get enough rest.”
Caprice knew that he had never been a talkative man and was not keen on keeping the conversation going, but it was barely ten o'clock, and it was far too early to sleep.
With this in mind, she texted him, "Liam, send me your picture too." She still did not have a picture of him on her phone. However, after the text was sent, there was no response.
Even after some time had passed, it was still radio silence on the other end. She frowned and was just about to fall into a sullen state when a picture popped up on the screen.
It was Liam. He had taken a picture of his reflection in the mirror. His appearance could not be made out clearly, but his tall and striking figure was immediately recognizable. Underneath the dim lights, he looked especially dashing.
Caprice immediately saved the picture to her phone.
She replied with a cute sticker of a cartoonish figure asking for a kiss. Ding!
Liam replied, "You'll get a kiss next time we meet."
She was not expecting him to interpret the sticker with its literal meaning though she had to admit that she was not opposed to him kissing her at all.
Her eyes flashed, and a burst of courage came to her out of nowhere as she promptly replied, "Can | touch your abs again the next time we meet?”
Liam replied, ‘We'll see when we meet again."
She grinned when she read the reply. "Okay."
"Get some rest."
"Okay..."
She fell asleep with her arms wrapped around her phone, Liam's picture on its display.
Meanwhile, Liam was still at his office desk at Carter Tech City. He held his phone closely in hand and stared at Caprice’s selfie that she sent him. Her adorable expression nearly took up the whole screen.
He gently brushed the tips of his fingers against her face on the screen, then he proceeded to set the picture as the wallpaper. The next day, Caprice ate breakfast with Piper, Freya, and Lana. After breakfast, she stepped into the car with her friends sending her off.
There was still a lot of work waiting to be done on the joint project with Carter Tech City. She had no time to waste.
While her car was coasting down the highway toward Glanchester, Heather's car had just stopped outside the building where Moses’ company was operating from. She went through the reception and gave the receptionist her information. Then, she was brought to Moses' office.
Moses greeted her politely, "Miss Manson, can | help you with anything?"
Heather sat on the couch, posturing herself elegantly as always with her slender legs dangling off the couch. She regarded Moses with her chin cocked slightly upward.
She began, ‘There's a certain subject | wanted to talk to you about."
"What is it?”
"Caprice," she said as she removed her sunglasses, revealing her sharp gaze underneath. Moses immediately seemed affected. "What about her?"
"You have a thing for her, don't you?" Heather said with a smile. "Maybe | can help you with that.”
Moses fell silent for a moment. After a pause, he spoke with a faint smile hanging on his lips, "| do like her, but she's already with someone that she likes. If | may be so direct, Miss Manson, are you trying to tear them apart so that | can swoop in and claim her for myself? Are you going to use me to tear them apart?"
Chapter 1943
He was very aware of Heather's hostility toward Caprice. He had a feeling that Heather only came to him with this proposal because she wanted Liam for herself.
The only thing he was unsure of was how she came to know about his feelings for Caprice.
Heather frowned sharply. She did not expect Moses to figure out her true intentions right away. Furthermore, it looked like he knew about Caprice and Liam.
Her eyes flickered with shock a few times. Immediately after that, she fixed a smug smile on her lips again and announced, ‘You're only partially right. | wasn’t only trying to match you with Caprice. I’m also trying to get her to leave that man who is such a horrible match for her."
Moses did not appreciate the contempt Heather had for Caprice in her tone, but he had to admit she made a good point.
Apart from her good looks, Caprice was not particularly remarkable as far as her capabilities went. Besides, her family background did not appear to be anything out of the ordinary either. If she came from a reputable family, she would not have worked for his measly little company in the first place back then.
The daughter of a rich family would not even have his startup company on her radar at all.
Forget about Liam, her status was barely comparable to that of Heather's. The only reason she somehow ended up with someone of a disproportionate status like Liam was that they happened to be childhood friends.
Upon noticing his hesitation in refuting her point, Heather smiled. She sank her claws in. "Mr. Stewart, you should consider joining forces with me. Not only will you get to claim Caprice for yourself, but | can also provide a substantial boost to your company's profile.”
She had done some research on Moses; this man was undoubtedly gifted and motivated as well.
His only shortcoming was his lack of connections due to his otherwise common status. If he wanted to propel his career forward and grow his company, he would need better connections.
It made sense that Moses would at least consider her proposal. Sure enough, he seemed intrigued.
After a long, ruminative silence, he spoke at last, "Miss Manson, | must admit that it's a very good deal, but I'm afraid | will have to refuse your kind offer. | have my principles.”
Heather immediately stiffened.
She scoffed to herself and nearly broke into insults. After letting a wave of irritation pass through her, she spoke as calmly as possible, "You don't have to give me an answer right away. Think about it for a few days before getting back to me. You have all the time in the world.”
With that, she rose from the couch and put one of her business cards on top of the desk. Before Moses could say anything, she was already on her way out.
He picked up the business card and inspected it. It was very well made. Its texture and weight alone differentiated it from any other common business cards he had seen. It looked very expensive.
Heather’s name and contact information was written on top of it. Furthermore, her position was etched in bold print: W Entertainment CEO.
W Entertainment was a legacy corporation in the entertainment industry. Apart from the entertainment industry, they also dabble in some other sectors.
He was not very informed on how high VV Entertainment ranked amongst all the titan corporations in Westchester, but one thing he knew for sure was that his company was a feeble ant in comparison.
He slumped back into his chair and closed his eyes, feeling a hint of restlessness.
Caprice went straight to the company upon her return to Glanchester.
Brianne and Logan had laid out the workflow going forward.
Several other departments in the company were going to be involved in the joint corporation. Caprice summoned the heads of the respective departments to the conference room for a meeting. They went over the itinerary and began distributing the workload amongst the members.
They spent the next ten days hard at work. It was only around then that everything began to fall into shape.
Going forward, Brianne and Logan could take over and supervise the remaining procedures.
There were still a lot of details and tasks that were not to be glossed over, but they were no longer Caprice's concerns since the new semester was about to begin. She would go back to being a university student again.
One evening, after wrapping up the final task on her to-do list, she bade farewell to Brianne and Logan, then she grabbed her bag and left the office.
When she got to the parking lot and entered the car, her parents were already waiting for her inside. John and Sherry greeted her with warm smiles.
"All done?” Sherry asked.
Caprice nodded. "Yeap!”
John gently ruffled her hair and praised her, "Good work.”
Caprice beamed with pride and asked playfully, "So... is there going to be any kind of reward for me?"
John smiled and suggested, "Does inheriting the entire corporation sound good to you?"
Chapter 1944
Caprice made a show of collapsing into Sherry's arm and pretending to fall asleep.
John and Sherry exchanged a weak smile.
After driving for another half an hour, they arrived at a restaurant. It was one of Caprice's favorite restaurants. They entered a box and had a wonderful dinner, stuffing their stomachs with delicious food.
After the meal, they all went home together.
On the way home, Caprice fell asleep halfway through the drive. A combination of her relaxed mood after finally being finished with work and her exhaustion made her sleep like a log. She was squeezed between Sherry and John and slumped against John's shoulder, using him as a pillow.
Sherry gently brushed the side of her daughter's cheeks with her fingers. After making sure that she had indeed fallen asleep, she smiled and turned to John, speaking in a low voice, "How was her performance at work?"
"She did a great job." John looked dotingly at her daughter's sleeping expression and elaborated, "She's very serious about her work and is a very organized worker. She knows how to deal with people, which makes up for her lack of experience. It's all about being adaptable and knowing how to communicate with others. So long as she’s willing to put in work, I'm sure she will fare well going forward."
Sherry had to admit she was a little surprised by John's favorable feedback.
Growing up, Caprice had always been a soft-spoken girl and tended to be a little on the slower end at times. Sherry did not expect such tall praises, especially coming from John of all people.
Perhaps Caprice had only been too lazy to put her brains to work this entire time. When she was willing to put in the effort, she was rather formidable.
She looked at Caprice's sleeping face and chuckled to herself.
Something occurred to her as she turned to John again. "By the way, Syl just called me this afternoon. She heard about Caprice making up with
Liam and was calling to ask if we should let them get engaged to them this year."
As John frowned, he promptly leaned back against the seat and closed his eyes. He looked like he was going to fall asleep. Sherry did not speak. She just sighed deeply.
If it wasn't for fear of accidentally waking up the exhausted Caprice, she would have smacked John right on the head.
The next morning, after having breakfast, Caprice said goodbye to her parents and Madam Stockton. Then, she put her luggage into the car and began her journey back to Westchester.
There was another week until the official start of the next semester, but she was already itching to go back because she had not seen Liam for almost two weeks.
During these two weeks, she dedicated the entirety of her attention to work. Since Liam was just as, if not busier than her, they barely had time to talk. She missed him dearly.
The car merged into the highway linking the two cities.
Three hours later, the car was parked outside the gate of the Sparkrow University dormitory. She hopped out of the car and carried her luggage into the dormitory.
Both Freya and Piper were working while Lana was lazing around the dormitory playing games.
After dropping off her luggage, Caprice briefly unpacked everything before leaving again. She planned to go to Carter Tech City to visit Liam.
As soon as she walked past the gate, she saw Heather who was draped in branded goods and had a cool pair of sunglasses on. Her entire demeanor screamed dignity and made her seem difficult to approach.
Although there was another week until the start of the semester, many students had returned to the campus. Many passersby could not help stealing glances at Heather.
Heather seemed to be enjoying the attention as well, and there was a shadow of a grin hanging by her lips. Caprice immediately grew suspicious.
Why was Heather here? Was Heather here to see her?
Chapter 1945
She was not in the mood to entertain Heather and briskly walked past her. "Hey, Caprice," Heather called after her in a mocking friendly voice.
The people gawking at Heather immediately directed their attention to Caprice.
Caprice could no longer ignore her presence. She turned to greet her, imitating her cheap smile the entire while. "Hey, Heather, what brings you here?"
Heather's mouth suddenly stiffened. She briskly approached Caprice and greeted her with an unnatural warmth, "I just figured I'd come to see you since | haven't seen you in a while. | was beginning to miss you!”
Caprice was struck speechless.
How did she manage to say things like this without throwing up?
Did she have amnesia? Did she already forget about what happened the last time they met when she shoved her into the pool? She answered crossly, without the least bit of friendliness, "That's too bad.
| was just on my way to see Liam. | don't have time to catch up with you.”
She mentioned Liam with a smug smile, and even the tone of her voice was piqued slightly when she spoke his name. She was aware of the effect this had on Heather.
Heather's complexion darkened just as she expected. Even with the sunglasses covering her eyes, Caprice could sense the way her gaze hardened.
Caprice had brought up Liam intentionally to rattle her. She deserved this; there was no reason for her to be here in the first place!
Heather swallowed a mouthful of rage and put on her pictorial smile again. “Are you dating Liam now? Congratulations!"
Caprice answered with a sarcastic smile, "It's all thanks to you. If you hadn't shoved me into the pool at the party last time, | wouldn't have known that he’s been single this entire time."
She had zero intention of holding back her punches since Heather brought this upon herself.
Heather pursed her lips tightly as if she had accidentally swallowed something unbearably sour. It looked like she could not strain any words out of her even if she had tried.
Caprice was done wasting time with her and decided to drop the conversation right there. "Heather, I'll be leaving for now if you don't have anything else to tell me."
She turned around without waiting for a response.
"There's going to be a dinner party that’s held annually in Westchester this coming weekend. Did you hear about it?" Heather suddenly grabbed her attention. She spoke with an air of condescension and haughtiness this time.
Caprice had to do a double-take. "What dinner party?"
Heather suddenly began chuckling mockingly. She made it seem like Caprice was a country bumpkin that had never heard of anything in the city.
"Hasn't Liam told you about it?” she asked with a wry smile. Caprice was confused now, "Why would he tell me about it?”
"All the people attending the dinner party are the industry leaders of all the different sectors in Westchester, their family members will be invited as well." Heather allowed herself a dramatic pause before resuming, "I
thought you've known Liam your entire life? Hasn’t he told you about it?"
Caprice grimaced. It was clear as day that Heather was insulting her. Despite that, she hardly felt anything.
Now that Heather mentioned it, she began to have a vague impression of this annual dinner party. The tradition started a little over a decade ago, and her parents would attend religiously every year. She never wanted to attend because she was not interested in such business-oriented events.
Heather took Caprice's silence to mean that she had been stumped by her ignorance. She was very pleased with how she managed to turn the situation around.
She commented, "Well, since you're dating Liam now, I'm sure he will bring you along."
Sensing that she was trying to skirt around the topic as she always did, Caprice confronted her snappily, "What are you trying to say?"
Heather smiled. "It's nothing, | just want to ask if you will go to this dinner party. After all, the people who can go to this event are all big names in the industry. If you can go with Liam, a lot of people will begin to know about you as well. That is, if Liam remembers to bring you with him, but I'm sure he will, considering how much he cares about you."
Caprice knew what Heather was hinting at now. She was indirectly suggesting that Liam would have brought her to the dinner party if he cared about her.
Several dark creases appeared on her forehead. Did this wretched woman come all the way here just to tell her something as ridiculous as this?
“Anyway, | hope I'll see you this weekend!" Heather said with a wry smile before excusing herself.
