His voice was becoming softer as if he was slowly getting further and further away from them. His bones were turning more transparent by the second. It didn’t matter if he used the divine eye or the saintly eye. Alex still couldn’t see him.
His clothes then fell to the ground, the bones were nowhere to be found.
“What is this?”
“Where did he go?”
Alex and Daya were horrified, but it seemed a tiny sliver of hope remained in their hearts.
Pigsy, who had just fainted, was at its limits as well. Howling with despair, it was dead. Moreover, it had to suffer quite a lot. Before dying, it wanted to curse Alex. It went as far as to curse the Mystic Maiden.
Hence, it died while being punished by the contract. Alex and Daya hugged each other as if candles in the wind, possibly extinguishing at any time.

Shelly replied, “Every land under the Dairaionji Temple is known to be dangerous. Since ancient times, countless odd and horrifying things have happened. This is nothing. It’s just a pity, is all…”
Treating the Mystic Maiden as a youngling, Shelly acted as if she had seen it all.

Reaching his arm out, he was utterly shocked. “Huh? Holy f*ck!”
It was no longer a normal arm. It was just bones!
All his flesh and veins are gone, and all that was left was a whitish bone. However, he sensed that his soul was fine. It wasn’t damaged, nor did it get detached.
He wanted to blink again but started shrieking in shock. Not only did he not have eyelids, but his eyeballs were also gone.

‘How can I see, then?’
His surroundings had changed completely too. It used to be a dreary, endless pitch blackness, yet it was now filled with greenery, ancient trees that were so tall that their leaves covered the skies. The whole place brimmed with life.
“Alex!”
A voice came from behind him. It sounded familiar yet foreign at the same time. Alex turned his head around, his neck crackling from the sudden movement.
The sight of a green skeleton running towards him made him jump.
“Holy sh*t! What the hell is this?”
Alex wanted to run, but he was rather slow. He used to move around with a fleshy body, so running required muscles. Without them, his bones wouldn’t move like he wanted them to. In just a few moments, someone charged at him, and he fell to the ground.
It was the green skeleton, who had lunged towards him and pinned him to the ground, sitting right on top of him…
‘Oh sh*t, from its voice, this skeleton is definitely a woman. Is she going to assault me here?’
‘But…’ He glanced at himself. ‘I don’t even have that thing anymore!’
He wanted to struggle his way out, but his bones wouldn’t heed his command. He panicked and started screaming. “Hey, don’t… Don’t be in such a rush. I don’t even have the right tools to do that now. There’s no use rushing me. Let’s wait till I grow back out and you… You can try again!”
The green skeleton used her boney hand to cover his mouth.
“Don’t scream. It’s me, Mystic Maiden!”
“Huh? Oh hey missy, why… Why did you turn out like this? Your entire body is green, and it’s kind of… Oh, why do we look like this now? Are we dead? Are you dead too?”
“That’s Miss Maiden for you!” Mystic Maiden corrected with a lowered voice. She looked around the place to check if there was any danger around her. “Don’t speak It’s dangerous here. There’s a big guy around.”
Alex was speechless. He couldn’t see anything else except the green skeleton on top of him.
Thus, just a moment later, a roar filled the skies.
Roarrrrr!
It shook the ground, vigorously swaying the trees. With the violent winds brushing through his skeleton, Alex’s soul nearly fell out.
He then noticed a dinosaur fossil… It looked like one at least or something that came out from a museum. It rushed out of the vast forest, three hundred meters away from Alex and the others.
With an entire body pitch black, it stood dozens of meters. Each and every bone had tightly-packed mystical talismans all over. As it continued to move, the talismans would move around its bones, changing and shifting. It looked somewhat mysterious and complicated and brimmed with an unknown law power. Its aura was absolutely terrifying. Being this close to it made Alex’s scalp go numb.
After that, another roar filled the skies, so loud that the air could potentially explode.
The dinosaur looked towards the sky, yet all it saw was a large area of shimmering gold that covered the entire sky.
Alex tried his best to distinguish the large figure, but he noticed it was just the skeleton of a massive golden bird. It loomed over the entire forest, spanning its wings that were thousands of meters wide. As tall as a mountain, it flew straight down.
Thus, Alex could finally be certain that this fossil-looking guy wasn’t roaring at them. It was roaring towards that large golden bird in the sky.
Boom!
The Earth felt as if it was shattering, as though a volcano had erupted. Wormholes opened up everywhere due to energy particles colliding with each other. As rocks and dust flew up from the grormd, it seemed the entire world was ending.
Alex and Mystic Maiden were two insignificant skeletons compared to those beasts. Hence, they minimized their conscience and energy, staying in the same position, not daring to move a muscle or make a sound. They looked as if they were corpses of two poor paupers ditched in a deserted place after their deaths.
With this, everything turned silent.
A hundred meter deep pit lay beside them now. The ‘living fossil’ had been captured by a large golden bird. The bird grabbed it by its scapula and swooshed into the sky, disappearing into the horizon.
“Wh… what is this place?” Alex whispered, still shocked.
“We call this place the Afterworld,” Mystic Maiden replied.
Alex took a while to digest all the information. “Then… Have you seen Daya and the others?”
“Follow me, they’re all here. And we’ve been waiting for you for two years.”
“What?”
“For two whole years?” Alex’s eyes bulged.

Alex could clearly remember how his life was drained out of his body, how everything was coming to an end. After that, he just died.
After that, he lost consciousness for a split second. ‘But that amount of time should’ve been quite short, right?’
‘Short…’
‘Could that split second indicate two years had already passed?’
‘Wouldn’t this mean that… My father William, who’s currently in the Cleansing Vase… Was I too late to save him?’
‘Has the Soul Planting succeeded? So did he become a completely different person?’

As if able to sense what Alex was thinking, she continued, “The Cleansing Vase and every spiritual storage you brought with you has now been placed in your mind palace! Besides, time doesn’t exactly work the same here. One day outside could be equivalent to a century here. Heck, it could be even longer than that.”
“What about the time within the Cleansing Vase?”
“According to my speculations, I don’t think time is affected by this place,” Mystic Maiden replied.
“I hope you’re right.”
“Even if I’m wrong, there’s nothing you can do. Alright then, I guess you’ve experienced death somewhat, now that your flesh has completely disappeared. It’s good that your skeleton still remains. We’re not even sure if we can get out of this realm. Let’s just meet up with the others first.”
Alex checked his mind palace. As expected, the Cleansing Vase and the storage ring were in there. Persephone’s Folly Bridge was in there too.
Shelly was fine. When Alex ‘died’, she immediately rushed into his mind palace after regaining consciousness. Being a spirit, after all, she would’ve been left in that deserted place without an actual body.
“Let’s go!”
Mystic Maiden led the way. She then stopped in her tracks and approached him once more, carrying Alex over her shoulders.
The green skeleton sped through the forest, despite the boney legs.
Since Alex’s top half was currently dangling off Mystic Maiden’s shoulders, his eyeless sockets stared towards the back of her thighs. Surprisingly, he found out that her legs were flowing with complicated talismans too. However, there weren’t a lot, dozens at most.
“What’s that on your leg? It’s not an ancient talisman, that’s for sure. It looks kind of weird.” Alex questioned.
“We call these bone patterns. Don’t ask too much about it, though, because I don’t have any answers for you. I’ve never seen anything like this myself,” Mystic Maiden replied.
“Where did it come from? What use does it have?”
“It’s handy. It can improve the quality of one’s bones, connecting them to the soul itself. And that increases your chances of surviving this place. You’ll understand what I’m saying once you get some yourself…”
“There are lots of ways to obtain it, killing enemies, like those bone demons, for instance. And yeah, we made this name up ourselves. The two bone demons we saw just now were of a very high rank. If you can kill them and absorb their bone patterns, it’ll be very beneficial. Or you could look for natural treasures.”
This world was similar to the real world, with precious spiritual herbs growing around the place. Within these herbs were some mysterious energy. Eating those could increase bone patterns.
Moreover, this place was extremely dangerous. Any bone demon that roamed this place was quite strong, it’d be a pain to deal with them.
On the way there, the Mystic Maiden explained the situation around here to Alex so that he could adapt quickly to it. According to her, she came here one year earlier than Alex. She had actually watched Alex and Daya taking their last breaths. After that, she even talked to Shelly for quite a while.
