Chapter 2220
Cecilia’s expression tightened for a split second before she said, “Probably just didn’t sleep well.”
She had planned to ask Calvin why he’d come to her door the night before.
“By the way, did you stop by last night?” she asked casually. “I was exhausted and half-asleep. I thought I heard someone call my name.”
Calvin nodded. “Yeah, I did.”
“What was it about?”
She didn’t lower her voice, so Vivian and the others caught every word. They leaned in immediately, ears practically twitching for gossip.
Calvin noticed their eager faces and chuckled. “It was nothing. Sven came by after midnight with some barbecue, so I figured I’d see if you wanted any.”
“Oh. Okay.”
Cecilia had expected something far more serious.
Vivian frowned. “Mr. Reese, that’s not fair. Sven told you to ask all of us, but you only asked Cecilia.”
Calvin smiled easily. “I knocked on your doors too. It was late—you were already asleep.”
“Huh?” Vivian’s shoulders slumped. “That makes sense. I was out the second my head hit the pillow.”
The others accepted his explanation without a second thought. Vivian, however, wasn’t ready to let it go.
“So what time did you knock?”
Calvin paused briefly before answering, “Around one in the morning.”
“That late? No wonder. I was dead asleep,” Vivian sighed.
Beside them, Cecilia focused on something else entirely.
She had arrived at the hospital by twelve-thirty. There was no way Calvin had been outside her door at one.
That left only one conclusion—he had lied.
It had been Charlotte and Sven’s wedding night. They wouldn’t have been sending barbecue to anyone.
Cecilia guessed Calvin had something else to discuss but couldn’t say it in front of everyone.
Or maybe he’d meant to tell her last night and changed his mind.
For now, she let it go, deciding she’d ask him privately later.
After breakfast, Charlotte and Sven came to see them off.
“Enjoy your honeymoon,” Cecilia told Charlotte. “Come back after the baby’s born.”
Charlotte nodded firmly. “Will do, boss.”
Even with Sven by her side, she still liked working. Besides, she was used to sharing an office with Cecilia.
On the way to the airport, Cecilia pulled Calvin aside, her tone serious.
“Are you sure there wasn’t something else you wanted to tell me last night?”
Calvin stiffened, then admitted, “Actually, there was.”
“What was it?”
“One of our projects ran into a problem. I heard the Jamieson Group handled that sector before, so I hoped you could give us some advice.”
“Oh, that’s it? No problem. Once we’re back, send me the details and I’ll take a look,” Cecilia agreed immediately.
Calvin nodded with a smile. “Will do.”
Only then did Cecilia get into the car and wave goodbye.
As the car pulled away, Sven walked over to Calvin.
“So, Calvin, when are you going to find your other half?”
Calvin patted his shoulder. “Relax. Worst case, I’ll make your son my godson and have him take care of me when I’m old.”
Sven’s usually stoic expression twitched.
Calvin burst out laughing. “I’m kidding. You looked so serious.”
Sven exhaled. It wasn’t that he was against the idea—he just doubted the kid could handle it.
