Ch. 1726..1730

Chapter 1726

When she rolled over, the thugs already had her surrounded. They wore menacing looks as they bore down at her. Her ankles were searing with pain and her body was drenched in sweat in an instant.

She looked at them with fear in her eyes and asked, “Did Aiden send you here?”

The leader of the pack stared at her and declared, “It doesn’t matter who sent us here. We came here today to teach you a lesson so that you learn to watch your mouth in the future.”

He turned to his men and roared, “Hold her down and give her a good slap! Each one of you, give her ten good slaps and only stop after she learns to keep her mouth shut!”

He took a step back and let the men go to work.

Two of them came forward to hold Sherry down. Sherry saw an opening and jabbed the tip of her heels at one of them, then she tried to crawl away on her wounded leg while crying out for help at the top of her voice, “Help! Help!”

There was no chance she could outrun them, especially not on a wounded leg. It did not take long before they grabbed her again and had her pinned to the ground.

She continued to shout desperately, “Help! Help!”

“TIL kill you if you don’t stop shouting!” One of the thugs cussed out loud and threatened her. Smack! She felt a terrible blow across her face.

The brutal slap made her cheeks go numb in an instant.

She nearly lost consciousness but continued shouting like clockwork, “Help-”

“Damn it, I’m going to kill you now!” The thug slapped her again.

Sherry’s hands and feet were bound completely, she could not get away.

When she saw the hand about to strike her again, she closed her eyes and prepared for the blow. However, the slap never connected, and the terrible blow she was fearfully anticipating never arrived. She opened her eyes slowly.

The thug who had slapped her was now being pinned to the ground with a foot on his back. It was Nelson, the bodyguard. The other two thugs were cautiously backing away, no longer as intimidating as they once were.

They were intimidated by the sight of Nelson and further discouraged by how their leader who they always held respect for was now pinned to the ground by Jason.

Sherry shuddered.

Out of nowhere, a figure came thundering in and delivered a swift kick to one of the two thugs, sending the thug flying away. After that, the man quickly approached Sherry and pulled her into his

arms. Sherry was still shuddering, her head was spinning. She was not expecting him to show up.

John wagered that she was traumatized by what happened. He frowned, and gently caressed the swollen side of her cheeks with his fingertips. “Don’t be scared, I’m here.”

Sherry immediately became irritated by the tone of his voice and shoved him away. “Out of my way.”

John grimaced and let her go.

She limped toward the thug who slapped her, then she turned to the bodyguard Nelson who was still stepping on him. “Nelson, get him on his feet.”

Nelson turned to John for permission. After John gave him a nod, he pulled the thug to his feet. The thug was completely terrified and stammered as he spoke, “Madam, | was wrong, please have some mercy on me.” Smack!

Sherry slapped him as hard as she could on the face and spat, “Who are you calling madam?! Some disgusting and old hooligan like you has no right to call me that!”

Instead of getting upset, the thug began to apologize profusely. It would seem like he was used to getting hit throughout his life. “It was all my fault, I’m sorry, please forgive me, boss.”

Sherry scoffed, then she approached the leader of the thugs. She turned to Jason who was also pinning the thug to the ground with his foot. “Get him on his feet.” Jason did as he was told.

Although the leader seemed to have some strong words for Sherry, he realized that he was outmatched, especially when he saw how strong and imposing both Jason and Nelson were. He put on his best flattering smile and told Sherry, “Boss, I’m sorry for causing you so much trouble. See, | never knew that you had all these men working for you. If | knew, | wouldn’t have taken the job even if | was paid double.”

Smack!

Chapter 1727

Sherry delivered a swift blow across his face.

The thunderous clap echoed across the corridor and could still be heard after seconds had passed.

The group of thugs was all equally dumbfounded. They were not expecting Sherry to slap the leader as well. Both Jason and Nelson remained silent.

John was the only one smiling satisfactorily. It was only when he observed the way Sherry continued to limp that a scowl formed on his face again.

The leader of the thugs who had just been slapped by Sherry was glaring at her viciously.

Sherry did not back down as she cocked an eyebrow and confronted the thug head-on. There was a rabid glow in her eyes that showed that she was not afraid of him. “What are you looking at? Don’t test me or I'll tear your eyebrows out of your socket!”

This seemed to intimidate the leader at last as he impishly averted his gaze from Sherry.

Sherry interrogated him, “Who sent you here? Was it Aiden? That b*stard!”

The leader kept his lips sealed and refused to answer.

Jason roared suddenly. “Talk!”

The leader was jolted by Jason’s sudden outburst but continued to hold his tongue.

Sherry scoffed with disdain, then she proceeded to raise her palms in the air.

Smack!

She slapped him across the face again, even harder than the last time.

The leader nearly fainted.

His group of posse was terrified by the brazen woman.

Jason and Nelson were appalled by this as well.

John, who was quietly spectating this entire time, displayed a look of shock, quickly followed by a proud smile. Sherry’s hands were trembling by this point.

She put in all the strength she could muster in that slap back there. She could feel her hands growing numb after that slap. She knew that she could not display any sign of weakness, not here or now.

She took a deep breath, then she bore a piercing look into the eye of the leader and hissed sharply. “If you don’t answer me right now, I'll make sure you don’t live to see tomorrow!”

Thump! As soon as she said that, Jason kicked the thug’s knees which made him crumble to the ground and kneel at Sherry’s mercy. Sherry felt her heart skip a beat when she witnessed the sight.

The combination of Sherry’s imposing attitude and John standing right behind her made the leader give in at last. He broke down and threw his head in his arms while shuddering the entire time. Soon, he confessed, “It was Aiden, he ordered the hit. He paid us a lot of money and wanted us to teach you a lesson. We're just doing our jobs, please forgive us, boss.”

Sherry got the confession she wanted at last. She looked at Jason.

Jason met her gaze and the look in his eyes seemed to imply that he was waiting for further instructions. His look seemed to be asking the question: How should we take care of them?

Sherry suddenly found herself at a loss. She had only wanted to know if it was Aiden who ordered the hit. She had not considered what to do after she got the answer she wanted.

She shot a confused look at John.

John approached immediately and took her by the hand, then he turned to Jason and Nelson. “Let them go.”

Sherry stiffened.

Before she could protest, Jason and Nelson had let the thugs go.

The leader got to his feet in an instant and ran off faster than they could blink.

The entire pack scurried after him in no time, they ran past the hotel lobby and disappeared into

the streets.

An immediate silence fell upon the corridor.

“Why are your hands shaking?” John asked while squeezing Sherry’s hand.

Sherry realized that she had been holding her breath this entire time. She sighed and blurted out, It’s tingling from when | slapped that thug back there, | slapped him as hard as | could.”

Chapter 1728

John frowned. He helped Sherry wipe off a bead of sweat trickling down her forehead and tried to comfort her. “Don’t be scared, they’re gone now and they're never going to come back.”

Sherry was about to nod reactively but quickly caught herself. She frowned and turned to John with an air of indignation. “When did | say | was scared? | just said that my hands are numb after slapping him.”

John smiled. “Yeah, | know.” He gently caressed her still-swollen face. “Come on, let's head up there first.”

Sherry took several steps before a sudden thought came to her. She suddenly cried out exasperatedly, “Why did we even let them go? | should’ve called the police!”

They had revealed that it was Aiden who employed them. If she had the police arrest them, they would have concrete evidence and could press charges against Aiden!

If she had done so, she would have been able to exact her revenge on Aiden and also chase him out of Sager Corporation for Lina and Carl.

The more she thought about it, the more she regretted not having done so. Soon, she directed her anger toward John. He was the one who ordered Jason and Nelson to let them go!

John merely chuckled as if it did not concern him.

He smiled bewitchingly and was as pompous as usual.

He suddenly stated, “I already told Jason to call the police, they should arrive soon.”

Sherry was puzzled by this. “What's the use of calling the police now that those thugs are already gone?”

“They have eyes on the street. Those thugs can only hide for a day at most before they get caught,” John informed calmly, “If things go well, I’d wager the police will have them all arrested by tomorrow morning. After they give their confession, the police will have a cause to arrest Aiden immediately after that.”

Upon bringing this up, he revealed a cunning smile and asked, “Tell me, would you rather the police arrest Aiden at his house tonight, or would you prefer that they storm Sager Corporation tomorrow morning and have him arrested in front of everyone?”

Sherry was taken aback by this idea.

“Besides, you've given those two thugs quite a heavy slap. If the police were to arrest them tonight, the police might think that it’s a common fight and drop it at that. It will be better to wait till tomorrow morning after the swelling has gone down.”

With that, he suddenly took Sherry’s hand again and asked with a warm tint of concern in his voice, “Why are your hands shaking again? Are you feeling cold?”

Sherry answered reluctantly, “Well...it’s a little cold | guess.”

It was not only her hands that were shaking, but her entire body was also shivering and even her hair was standing on its end. John seemed concerned and carefully pulled her into his arms.

Sherry was staring at the space in front of her and seemed completely out of it. She barely noticed that John was holding her. Her mind was replaying what John had told her.

In such a period, he managed to devise such a well-thought-out and brutally effective plan to the most minute detail.

It was no surprise that this was the man who ascended the ranks rapidly and became the richest man in Glanchester in just a matter of years.

She felt a strange sense of sympathy for whoever crossed paths with him in the past.

Ding!

The elevator had arrived.

Sherry was immediately pulled out of her state of trance as she quickly noticed that John’s arms were wrapped around her

tightly.

Her immediate reaction was to shoot a murderous glare at him the way she always did. Before she could bring herself to do so, she considered how he had come to her rescue and the plan he had formulated to help her. With that, the hostility in her eyes subsided.

She snarled dryly. “Let go of me.”

John looked at her tenderly and told her, “Your leg is hurt.”

“| can walk well enough, | don’t need your help.”

John continued holding on to her and tried to negotiate with her. “I'll let go after you get home.” Sherry grimaced and held her silence.

John smiled subtly, proud of his victory.

Inside the house, Aunt Wanda was looking after Caprice.

After Sherry was ushered into the house by John. Caprice crawled out of Aunt Wanda’s arms and ran toward her mother on her short and stubby legs.

“Daddy! Mommy!” Sherry tapped John urgently on the shoulders.

John took the hint and let her go.

Chapter 1729

Chapter 1729 Sherry bent over to carry Caprice into her arms.

Caprice was more perceptive than she would appear and immediately noticed Sherry’s swollen cheeks as soon as she bent over. She raised an eyebrow and promptly pointed it out. “Mommy, why is your face swollen?”

Sherry quickly came up with a story. “Mommy accidentally tripped while rushing back home.” Caprice seemed worried. “Did it hurt?”

Sherry felt a warm fuzzy feeling rising in her chest and assured Caprice with a genuine smile. “It only hurt a little when | fell, but it doesn’t hurt anymore.”

Caprice gently grazed it with her fingers. Sherry caressed Caprice as well and carried her into her arms. Aunt Wanda had already prepared dinner for them.

John was the one who bought the grocery today though it was Aunt Wanda who cooked them. She seemed to worry that Sherry would not eat the food knowing that it was John who bought them and made a point of informing Sherry, “Miss Sherry, Caprice and | picked out these vegetables at the supermarket this afternoon, these are very fresh.”

Sherry smiled and thanked her, “Thank you, Aunt Wanda.”

Aunt Wanda smiled and was very courteous. “No need, it’s my pleasure.”

Sherry asked her to sit down and eat with them.

Halfway through the meal, there was a knock on the door.

Aunt Wanda went to get the door for them.

Sherry turned to the entrance and was greeted by the sight of several policemen.

She was taken aback by this and turned to look at Caprice.

Caprice was very curious about the men in police uniforms and seemed like she had many questions to ask.

That was when John suddenly turned to Aunt Wanda. “Wanda, why don’t you and Jason take Caprice and play with her for a bit?”

Aunt Wanda immediately understood what this meant. She promptly carried away Caprice who barely had her fill yet. Before Caprice could even utter a word of protest, she was carried outside by Aunt Wanda. The policemen walked into the apartment.

They sat with Sherry in the living room where she relayed the events of the evening to them. She told them how she was suddenly assaulted by a group of thugs while she was waiting for an elevator downstairs.

John sat next to her the entire time. After the police officers recorded her statement, they asked her, “Were there any injuries?”

“They swung a bat at my leg and slapped me.” After a brief pause, she continued, “Thankfully, my... my husband arrived in time and chased them off.”

One of the police officers who was a female officer observed the wounds on Sherry’s leg and her swollen cheeks. She suddenly asked, “Do you know these men? Can you think of any reason why they would hurt you?”

“| don’t know them. Most of the people | know are from my company. | remember them telling me to learn to keep my mouth shut as they slapped me. If | had to guess, they were employed by someone who wanted to send me a message.”

The officers were intrigued by this and proceeded to further verify Sherry’s identity.

Sherry showed them her identity card and told them about her role at Sager Corporation.

The officers exchanged looks with each other. This new piece of information seemed to spill some light on the case.

The policewoman turned to Sherry. “Mrs. Sherry, we'll conduct our investigation right away. We'll catch these thugs as soon as we can. Also, we recommend you lodge an injury report.”

“Alright.” The officers left shortly after that.

John handed Sherry a glass of warm water and spoke to her softly, “Have some water. I'll take you to the station to lodge an injury report.”

Sherry was certainly feeling thirsty after all that talk.

She took a gentle sip from the glass before she rose to her feet and limped toward the door.

John frowned upon seeing this. He promptly approached her and wrapped an arm around her waist to support her. Sherry shot him a look. “Let go of me, | don’t need your help.”

“I'll do that as soon as we get into the car.” He refused to yield and proceeded toward the elevator.

Sherry heaved a long sigh.

She decided to let it slide and accept his help, especially since it hurt to walk.

Chapter 1730

Nelson trailed closely after them.

After they got out of the elevator, they headed straight for the car.

Nelson got in the driver’s seat and drove them to a nearby police station.

John helped Sherry out of the car and walked her into the station.

After lodging the injury report, Sherry was taken to the hospital.

The side of her face that she took the slap from was still slightly red and swollen. One of her thighs was swollen as well, but the bones were not broken.

The doctor gave her some pain-relieving drugs and something to help reduce the swelling. In time, the swelling on her face went away, and the swelling in her legs was mostly reduced as well. Although it still hurt a little to walk, she no longer needed John to support her anymore.

She managed to walk out of the hospital by herself, then Nelson drove them back to her place. Aunt Wanda had already got home with Caprice and was waiting for them at the door.

Upon seeing their return, Caprice trotted to them excitedly.

“Daddy! Mommy!”

Sherry took her into her arms, one step before John.

Caprice laid against her shoulders and asked out of curiosity, “Mommy, where did you and Daddy go? Did the policemen take you? Are you in trouble?”

“No, Mommy only went to the hospital to see a doctor.” “Did the doctor take a look at your cheeks?”

“Yes.”

With that, Sherry took Caprice into the house.

John followed them into the house.

Later into the night, Carrie had fallen asleep and was tucked into bed. Even at that hour, John was still in the living room and showed no intention of leaving.

Seeing as he saved her and had given her diligent advice regarding how to prosecute Aiden, Sherry went to the living room and spoke to him more politely than usual, “Caprice is asleep, you can go back now.”

“Sure.” He rose and approached her. He took a close look at her face which was no longer swollen but still glowed with a bright red tint. Then, he took a look at her injured thigh before advising,” You should get some rest as well, make sure you take the medicine the doctors prescribed you.”

Sherry avoided his gaze and answered dismissively, “I know, you can leave now.” John smiled faintly. “Good night.” With that, he turned and walked out.

Sherry swiftly headed back to the bedroom. She took the anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed by the doctor, then fell asleep with Caprice in her arms.

It was midnight by this point.

The man walked out of the apartment and walked to the opposite hotel with Jason. He asked sharply, “Where are those thugs?”

Jason reported, “After they ran off, | had two of our men tail them just as you have instructed. They’re terrified and are hiding ina shady old district on the outskirts of the city, trying to lay low until the entire thing blows over.”

John had everything planned out. “Keep an eye on them. Get a few more men together and have them spy on Ron, Aiden, and Caden as well.”

Jason answered swiftly, “Alright, I'll have it arranged right away.” John made a look and walked across the road.

The moon cast its brilliant glow on his face, something unusually vicious and sinister was hidden underneath his otherwise fair and reserved expression.

He was going to make sure they got what they deserved for hurting Sherry. The next day. Sherry’s thigh had recovered considerably throughout the night, there was only some light swelling and lingering soreness.

Branches of capillary vessels were slightly visible under the surface of her cheeks. After she took a shower, she walked out of the bedroom and opened the front door.
