Chapter 2257
The corner of Robert’s mouth twitched.
“What did you say?”
Cecilia put on a puzzled look. “Wasn’t that why you bought this land in the first place? To expand the ancestral tombs? Since it’s not being acquired anymore, why not keep expanding them?”
The words hit so hard Robert nearly spat blood.
Even so, he forced it down, not letting a trace show.
“That makes sense,” he said, “but I’ve already spent so much money. I don’t have the funds to renovate it.”
“Then leave it to me,” Nathaniel said. “I’ll handle it.”
Robert stared at him, stunned. This husband and wife had no shame at all.
They had already dragged him down this far, and now they were still piling it on.
Cecilia and Nathaniel acted as if they didn’t notice his expression.
Cecilia followed up smoothly. “Uncle, we’re family. Nathaniel can cover the expansion costs himself. Either way, it’s for the ancestors. But the land should still be transferred to Nathaniel—otherwise, it won’t be convenient for him to hire a construction crew, right?”
Robert’s hand, hanging at his side, clenched hard enough to tremble. “O-okay,” he said.
The only reason he agreed was because the buildings he had put up were illegal to begin with.
If they were forced to tear them down later, it would cost him another fortune.
After saying that, he turned to Arnold.
“Go handle the transfer.”
Arnold was completely thrown. His boss had bought that land at a sky-high price, and now he was giving it away for nothing…
But he didn’t dare question it. He simply nodded and left to take care of it.
Once Arnold was gone, Cecilia, Nathaniel, and Wren finally left as well.
The moment they were out of sight, Robert collapsed to the ground.
“It hurts… it hurts so bad.”
His chest felt like it was being torn open. All that money—gone, just like that.
He couldn’t accept it.
Cecilia and Nathaniel didn’t get into the same car as Wren.
Once they were alone, they finally stopped holding it in and burst out laughing.
“Robert took a massive loss this time. Let’s see if he still dares try to set us up again,” Cecilia said.
Nathaniel smiled and nodded. “Yeah. Exactly.”
Just then, Nathaniel’s phone started ringing.
He glanced at the screen. It was Mr. Chandler.
Nathaniel answered, and Mr. Chandler’s grateful voice came through immediately.
“Mr. Rainsworth, thank you so much. I saw the released dossier. That piece of land I sold is completely worthless now.” He laughed on the other end. “I really got lucky this time.”
Mr. Chandler also knew Robert had later bought the land from Nathaniel.
That was why he had called—to thank him personally.
“No need to thank me. I told you I wouldn’t let you take a loss, and I meant it.”
“Of course. You always keep your word. I trust you.”
After a few more polite exchanges, Mr. Chandler hung up.
Cecilia had heard enough from Nathaniel’s side of the call to piece it together. She looked at him differently.
“This time, you didn’t just make money—you did him a favor too. If you ever need something from Mr. Chandler later, there’s no way he’ll refuse.”
Nathaniel turned to her, his gaze deep and steady. “Not me. Us. The money I make is yours too. From now on, we advance and negotiate together. If one of us wins, we both win.”
Cecilia’s eyes curved into a smile.
“Mm. Got it.”
Nathaniel reached out and patted her on the head. “Good. As long as you understand.”
Color rushed to Cecilia’s face. The gesture made her feel like a child, and she swatted his hand away.
