Chapter 2259

Lucille had no idea that after handing the work to Nathaniel, he had immediately passed it on to her own husband.

“Lucy, I’m sorry. I have to work late again today, so I can’t come pick you up. Just head home and wait for me, okay?”

Mason’s voice came through the phone, low and careful.

Lucille frowned. “Why are you working late again? You’ve been doing overtime every day lately. Is the company really that busy?”

“Yeah. Things have picked up, and since sir keeps going over to your side every day, my workload’s gotten even heavier.”

There was nothing Mason could do.

Lucille went quiet for a moment, like something had just sunk in.

“Then what am I supposed to do? I wanted some time alone with you.”

“Just hang in there. Once things settle down, it’ll be fine.”

Lucille ended the call anyway, clearly unhappy.

Cecilia looked at her. “What is it? Mason can’t come pick you up again?”

Lucille nodded. “I don’t know what’s going on with him lately. He’s working late every single day, and when he finally gets back, it’s really late.”

“Alright,” Cecilia said. “Want to ride back with us?”

Lucille shook her head immediately. “No thanks. I’m not about to be a third wheel.”

Nathaniel stuck to Cecilia every day.

More than once, Lucille had noticed he even got jealous of her.

At this point, she was starting to suspect her husband’s overtime had Nathaniel’s fingerprints all over it.

Since Lucille put it that way, Cecilia didn’t press further.

Just then, Nathaniel walked in.

“Ceci, time to get off work and head home.”

Then he spotted Lucille and asked deliberately, “Miss Campbell, Mason didn’t come pick you up? It’s this late, and he’s letting you go home alone?”

Lucille’s reply was sharp. “He has to work overtime.”

Honestly, she was speechless.

Nathaniel clearly knew Mason was working late, and he still asked like that. If that wasn’t intentional, what was?

Nathaniel acted like he didn’t notice anything and kept going. “Really? It doesn’t seem that busy at the company right now. So why has Mason been working overtime every day?”

“Oh, right—I heard the company hired a few new assistants recently, and one of them is pretty—”

He was about to continue when Cecilia shot him a sharp look.

That was enough to make him stop.

Later, once the two of them were alone in the car, Cecilia couldn’t hold it in anymore.

She turned to him. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”

“Did what?” Nathaniel asked, playing dumb.

“What else? You were deliberately trying to make Lucille mad.” Cecilia looked at him, exasperated.

It was the first time she’d seen such a childish side of him.

Nathaniel went quiet for a long moment.

Then he looked at her. “Was it really that obvious?”

“Obviously. People say you can tear down a temple, but you don’t break up a marriage. And here you are, stirring things between Lucille and Mason every day. What kind of boss does that?”

Cecilia didn’t hold back.

Nathaniel rubbed his nose and nodded, looking like a kid caught doing something wrong.

“You’re right. I’ll be more careful. I won’t do that again.”

“Good. And be nicer to Mason. He’s been with you for a long time.”

“Okay, okay, okay.”

At that point, whatever Cecilia said, Nathaniel agreed to.

She didn’t say anything else.

Leaning back in her seat, she drifted off to sleep.

By the time they got home and the car stopped, Cecilia slowly opened her eyes.

“We’re here?”

“Yeah.” Nathaniel nodded. “Come on, let’s get out.”

Cecilia rubbed her eyes and let him guide her out of the car.

She had grown used to the way he took care of her.

They hadn’t even reached the front door when a familiar voice called out.
