Chapter 2263

As Nathaniel cleared the dishes, he said, “I’m fine. I can go to the company with you.”

Cecilia looked at him, her expression turning serious. “Nathaniel, what’s really been going on with you these past few days?”

He paused, caught off guard for a moment, then replied, “Nothing much. I probably just haven’t been sleeping well.”

“You know that’s not what I’m asking.”

Her face tightened.

Nathaniel saw it, but the truth still stuck in his throat.

“Ceci, just let me stay with you a little more, okay? I really don’t want to be too far away from you,” he said softly.

Seeing him like that, Cecilia thought of what he’d murmured in his fever the night before, and she began to understand.

“Nathaniel, you don’t need to worry about me so much anymore. What happened with Nicholas was an accident.”

“Mm. I understand.” His expression stiffened.

He said he understood—but the moment Cecilia stepped out, he followed right behind her.

Seeing that, Cecilia stopped arguing altogether.

By now, the employees were used to seeing them come and go together.

One after another, they looked at Cecilia with envy.

But to her, it didn’t feel all that good.

The moment Nathaniel arrived, he started helping her with work.

At this point, he looked like nothing more than an ordinary employee at Jamieson Group.

Who would’ve guessed this “employee” was also the CEO of a multinational corporation?

“Ms. Smith, take a look at this. The project you approved the day before yesterday was rejected by the shareholders.”

Lucille knocked and walked in. Dark circles lingered under her eyes—she clearly hadn’t slept well.

Cecilia took the file and frowned. “What’s wrong with the mall development project?”

“The shareholders say there are already enough shopping districts in that area. If we build another one, it’ll be hard to make money,” Lucille said.

Cecilia tapped her fingers lightly on the desk.

“Did you tell them a subway line is going to open near that project soon?”

“I did, but those old fossils didn’t believe it. They said it was just speculation.”

Lucille looked frustrated. If Charlotte had been here, she probably would’ve lost her temper already.

“Then do this.” Cecilia gestured toward Nathaniel. “Tell them the project is a joint venture with Imminence Corporation, and that Mr. Rainsworth personally approved it.”

Her voice wasn’t loud, but every word landed clearly.

Nathaniel looked up at her. “You really know how to use me.”

“What? You don’t think the project will work?” Cecilia asked.

His brow lifted slightly. “Fine. Whatever you say.”

Lucille nodded and turned to leave.

Then Cecilia stopped her.

“Lucy, didn’t you sleep well last night?”

“Huh? I slept fine. I’m full of energy,” Lucille said quickly, trying not to let Cecilia worry.

Cecilia looked at her, a little helpless.

“What Mr. Rainsworth said yesterday was just a joke. There’s no ‘pretty female assistant.’ Don’t pick a fight with Mason over it.”

Lucille froze.

When she turned to look at Nathaniel, her eyes were full of complaint.

“Mr. Rainsworth, that wasn’t funny at all. Hmph!”

She stormed out.

Cecilia shot Nathaniel another glare. “See that? That’s because of your little stunt.”

Nathaniel kept typing on the keyboard. “How was I supposed to know she’d take it seriously?”

In truth, Nathaniel knew Mason well.

If Mason were the type to stray, he would’ve done it long ago.

After working by Nathaniel’s side for so many years, he had seen all kinds of women.

Besides, not every man was interested in women.

Every day after work, all Mason looked forward to was going home and playing video games.

“Tell Lucille this—there’s no way someone like Mason would betray her.”
